What do you get when you combine caring volunteers, deserving special needs students, and over 1,000 barbecued chicken halves with all the fixins’?
The answer is the Teddy Bear and Friends Chicken Dinner at North Shelby School.
For over 20 years, Carl “Teddy Bear” Fortenberry and his friends have held an annual chicken dinner fundraiser for the senior class at the school. This past Friday saw them repeat that awesome act of love. The event raises money each year for a special trip to Myrtle Beach for school seniors.
Principal Paula Stevens talked about the school.
“The school’s roots go back over 50 years,” she said. “It used to be north of Shelby and was called the Children’s Center.”
Despite its name, the current sparkling clean and modern building was completed seven years ago and is behind James Love Elementary School south of Hwy. U.S. 74, just off N.C. 150.
“We are a special purpose
school for students with significant levels of disabilities,” Stevens said.
Students range in age from kindergarten to 22 years. There are 67 students. Students are placed at the school following recommendation from their Individual Educational Program Team.
“We have a rigorous course of study tailored to their individual needs,” she said. “We also have college classes here where students can learn vocational skills.”
The school mascot is a Mustang and the mottos “Mustangs Have Character” and “Our belief is that all students can learn” are apt descriptions, not only of the students but the dedicated staff as well.
The chicken barbecue event started out small and has grown over the years into one of Cleveland County’s most successful and heartwarming charitable happenings. Fortenberry described the chronology of the cause.
“The idea started in 2004 when my friend Robert Hunt and I started it,” said Fortenberry. “We were members of the Harley Owners Group in Gastonia and had done a similar event for West St. School there. Later I was at the old school (Children’s Center) and a child there told me she wished we would do a beach trip for
The beach trip itself is one that is in many ways a dream come true for the students
“This year a dozen seniors will make the trip,” said Fortenberry.
“Most of them have never been to the beach or
will take them out to eat and give each one fifty dollars to spend at places like Broadway on the Beach. We will also go out on the pier. They all have a ball.”
said. “School staff helps with the chicken sale. They love the kids.”
According to Stevens, the beach trip is super safe.
“It is very well supervised,” she

bright yellow “Teddy Bear and Friends” t-shirts did everything from preparing food plates to handing them out to hungry customers, to cleaning up after the last box was sold. Bob and Cindy Cabaniss have volunteered every year since the event started.
“It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” said Bob.
“It is a great fund raiser for our special needs students,” said Cindy.
No story about the event would be complete without mentioning the food and the folks who
made it. Three cheers to the guys who barbecued the 1,000 chicken halves. The job was done on several huge barbecue smokers at a farm site about two miles from the school by Doug Fortenberry (Carl’s cousin) and a crew of over a dozen helpers who did everything from stoke the coals to put the finished product in containers for transportation to waiting plates.
Desserts were prepared by lady volunteers. Dozens of cakes and other goodies were heaped on tables in a room at the school. The aroma of freshly baked cake filled the room and wafted out into the hallway.
Other fixins’ for the plates included traditional baked beans, slaw, rolls, and pickles.
The chicken sale is always a sell-out.
“Last year we raised over $10,000,” said Fortenberry. “We also got sponsorship funds from places like Sewell Contractors, Cleveland County Independent Bikers, and Windjammers Motorcycle Club.”

Touchdown-worthy apps to amp up the crowd (Family Features) The best watch parties have two things in common: good food and good company to root for your team with. Kick off your football feast with appetizers made with a game day favorite: avocados.
With nearly 2.5 billion pounds of avocados imported from Mexico annually, based on Hass Avocado Board Volume Data, the Big Game is the No. 1 occasion where avocados and guacamole
are served and prepared. In fact, approximately 250 million pounds of avocados are imported in the weeks leading up to the Big Game, according to “Produce Blue Book” - that’s enough avocados to go down and back the length of a standard professional football field more than 400,000 times.
Just as the first quarter sets the tone for the game, apps are your first opportunity to build excitement and get your guests cheer-
ing. Because it’s not game day without guac, start the party by mashing up a bowl of Championship Guac - a real craving crusher made with creamy, delicious Avocados From Mexico and crispy bacon - to sack hunger.

Imagine being the recipient of a single arrow, carefully crafted by the mischievous Cupid to awaken a spark of love within your heart. Although Cupid is a mythological tale; it reflects the way God loves us, too. The arrows of Cupid remind us that love is a powerful force, capable of transforming lives, and the divine Author of love is no exception. In 1 John 4:8b (ESV), we read that “God is love.” His love is not something He feels, but rather who He is - a divine essence that permeates every aspect of His being. In other words, He just can’t help himself; it is his nature to love, and love lavishly. An example of this is when He developed a solution for our messed up, sinful state. I
John 4:10 (NLT) says, “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” Isn’t it comforting to know that we are loved so deeply?
Lover of Our Soul I like to call Jesus, the ‘Lover of Our Souls.” This phrase beautifully captures the profound and selfless love of Jesus Christ. His incredible sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate expression of agape love—a love that is unwavering and full of grace. Unlike the fleeting and whimsical affections we often see, like those associated with Cupid, the love Christ offers us is steadfast and divine. It reaches beyond human emotion and extends to each of us, inviting us into a wonderful relationship filled with grace, mercy, and redemption. This love is truly special because it doesn’t
ask for anything in return. Instead, it’s a radical commitment to our well-being, showcasing the depth of God’s compassion for all of humanity. Through His willingness to endure suffering and sacrifice, Jesus shows us that love is a liberating force, freeing us from the burdens of sin and self-centeredness. As it says in John 15:13 (NIV): “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, You are good and your mercy endures forever. I am in awe of how you love me. I am grateful that your love looks beyond my faults and sees my needs. Please forgive me for taking your love for granted. May my roots grow down into your love and keep me strong. Please give me the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and
how deep Your love is. May I experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. May I be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You. In Jesus’ nameAmen.”
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

(FCNC) announces the opening of a new public hiking trail on its South Mountains Headwaters Preserve property in Burke County. Named the Bob Benner Memorial Trail, this 1.3-mile moderate hiking-only trail features two overlooks for hikers to enjoy views of the South Mountains. The trailhead and parking area is located on Old NC-18, just south of Sugarloaf Road and north of Baptist Camp Road, approximately 20 minutes from downtown Morganton.
FCNC’s South Mountains Headwaters Preserve was first established in 2015 to further protect land and water resources in the headwaters of the Henry Fork River and Jacob Fork River watersheds. Since the initial land purchase, the preserve has grown to 1,885 acres, and it shares three miles of boundary with the South Mountains State Park. FCNC has taken steps to restore native hardwood and pine forests on the preserve property through sustainable forestry practices. More than 80,000 native pines have been planted on the preserve as of 2024.
“Opening a trail on FCNC land in the South Mountains is a fantastic way to celebrate 30 years of our organization’s dedication to protecting the foothills and Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina,” said Andrew Kota, Executive Director.
“Our founding in 1995 was for the purpose of protecting nearly 18,000 acres that became the publicly-accessible

There are two overlooks along the trail. The first provides a gorgeous view of the South Mountains right after the first uphill section on

Thirty years later, we are opening the Bob Benner Memorial Trail so the public can recreate and enjoy vistas of the South Mountains State Park, a park that FCNC has helped expand into the largest state park in North Carolina,” Kota continued. The moderately strenuous trail is approximately 1.3 miles long (2.6 miles out and back), with 500 feet of elevation change from the parking
the trail. The second is located at the end of the trail and offers a stunning view into the heart of the South Mountains - the perfect reward for one’s hike. The bench at the end of the trail is ideal for quiet reflection and appreciation of wild spaces.
“Living in the South Mountains and working for Foothills Conservancy, I’m so thankful our organization offers public spaces like this,
as well as the nearby Possum Rock river access on our Henry Fork River Preserve,” said Ian Spinelli, Marketing and Development Manager. “The innate beauty, diversity of flora and fauna, and stunning vistas are such a delight to share with locals and visitors alike,”
In September of 2019, Bob was brought to the trailhead for a dedication ceremony before his passing.
“Growing up… I learned to love everything about the outdoors, and early on I realized I wanted to protect them, if I could,” Benner said at the time. He continued, “I truly hope that the influence I have had over the years will inspire future generations to continue seeing the need to conserve and protect the lands we are so fortunate to have here in the foothills of North Carolina. It is my hope that Foothills Conservancy and similar organizations will continue generating the interest and support needed to protect these precious lands.”
“I know that Pop [was] very pleased to have a trail named in his honor,” said David Benner, Bob’s son. “More than that would be the pride he would feel for the organization responsible for it. Foothills Conservancy has done amazing work on so many levels for some time now. Thanks from the ‘Old Man’ and from me,” he expressed.

I love the warmer days of winter. It gives me a chance to walk my hunting areas. Because the leaves are off the trees and because there is no concern about spooking deer, I can gather all kinds of information from the last season. It is a great time to assess the good and bad of the previous year and plan some changes for the next. The woods will give a hunter plenty of information about the previous year and about the possibilities of the next season. One just has to do go out, walk around, be attentive, and let it all speak. This year, more than anything else, I’m just looking for signs of life. Mainly the life of bucks. I saw very few of them in one area. So, I want to find out why. Again, the woods will speak. Hopefully they will speak volumes and certainties. But regardless, they will speak.
I know I talk and write about this a lot - the truth of how creation speaks, but it is never more illustrated for deer hunters than this time of year. Maybe a warm February day ought to cause us to be reminded of how creation also speaks to us about things more important than deer. After all, it is still the primary way God speaks to mankind. Yes, it is. While God wants to speak to his followers through the Scriptures, He still speaks to all people through creation. And this is so neat to me, because it shows me His dogged and determined pursuit. That is, He is going to show Himself to us and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. While a man may burn a Bible, he can never burn all of creation. And even in a fire, God will reveal His desire to purify and start something new. We just can’t hide from God. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s a good one. It’s good because not only does it show that we can’t hide from God, but it shows that God will never give up until he finds us. And what will He do when He finds us? He won’t condemn or even criticize. He will celebrate. The lost coin was celebrated when found. The lost sheep was celebrated when found. The lost son was celebrated when found. And God wants there to be about 7.9 billion celebrations, because His desire is that every single lost soul be found. What was the message as I perused my hunting area today? It was revealed in the trees. I saw every limb of every tree reach to the heavens in celebration. And the message for me was to live in celebration because this will be the posture of all those in heaven as we welcome all those, like us, who have been found.

This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. Psalm 119:50
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:16-18
