Mt. Holly city manager Danny Jackson is retiring By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
After many years of exemplary and heartfelt service, Mt. Holly city manager Danny Jackson has announced his retirement. His last official day as city manager will be Nov. 1. However, after a 30 day period as stipulated by the NC Local Government Employee Retirement System, he will return in December as a consultant to the city council working on special projects.
A strong faith and fierce love of his town have been two of the driving forces behind Danny Jackson’s three decades working for the City of Mt. Holly. Jackson has held the post of city manager since 2010, but started his career back in 1987 with the parks and recreation department. “I was working in the private sector at the time and one day was playing basketball with a friend who worked for the City of Mt. Holly,” Jackson said. “It wasn’t planned, but I heard about a job
opportunity in parks and recreation and I grabbed it.” Jackson, who is an Appalachian State grad with a degree in Business Management, worked that position for three years, then in 1990 he transferred to the planning department as a code enforcement officer. In 1995 he was promoted to planning director. In 2003 he became assistant city manager and in 2010 the city council named him city manager. Throughout his career, Jackson has been a person that people See JACKSON, Page 4

Third annual Mt. Holly lantern parade lit up the night By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Even with many special events of other types canceled due to the COVID19 situation, the much-anticipated third annual Mt. Holly lantern parade took place on October 24 starting at 7pm in Tuckaseege Park and as expected provided a spectacular show. The event was a “parade in reverse”. That is, the hand
crafted paper, wire, and lights lanterns were placed at stations in the park, and folks who attended strolled past them. About 1,400 people pre-registered to come see the dozens and dozens of lanterns glowing in the dark. Social distancing guidelines were observed and everyone wore masks. The previous two lantern parades were artistic spectacles that saw lanterns in See LANTERN, Pages 10 & 11
North Carolina will remain paused in Phase 3 Governor Roy Cooper announced last week that North Carolina will remain paused in Phase 3 for three more weeks as health officials continue to monitor North Carolina’s viral trends. North Carolina has seen increased hospitalizations and trajectory of cases in recent weeks. Governor Cooper underscored the importance of wearing masks,
social distancing, and using good judgment despite fatigue or frustration with the pandemic. “As this pandemic continues, I know it’s difficult and tiring to keep up our guard, especially when we’re gathered with people we love. But it’s necessary. No one wants to spread COVID-19 accidentally to friends or family, See PHASE 3, Page 4

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS The low-down on hi-bernation Well it’s that time of year when the inner animule in most folks begins to stir and what it’s stirring for is food and long sleeps. The slender physiques many of us struggled to attain by easing up on our consumption of groceries during the summer have already started re-bloating with the arrival of cold weather and dreary days spent indoors and in too close proximity to the ice box. Once I knew a nice looking lady and she termed the arrival of cold weather food consumption as “recreational eating”. I know folks these days have every sort of digital device that can be had and the little boxes can supposedly inform us of the world’s accumulated knowledge and falsely reaffirm to us we are super sophisticated and above and beyond most of the feelings our ancient ancestors had when they were walking around clad in the hide of some beast and living in caves and teepees and such, but that is a fallacy because we are only ahead of those folks in technological ways and as that TV show Naked and Afraid reveals (literally) under our polyester britches we are kin to but also a shadow of those humans and humanoids who trod the sod a long, long, time ago. Which brings us back to hi-bernation. Now, I confess that over the last couple of chilly morning weeks my inner Cro-Magnon has whispered to my brain “eat all you can before it’s too late and you will be hungry and die and your relatives will be casting lots for your bison fur coat and flint tipped spear”. Well, you better believe I have been listening loud and clear because I have been put-
ting on the feed bag at every opportunity so I can have plenty of fat for the coming hard times. Indeed, I recently went to see my physician and at the “weigh in” discovered I have already added several pounds to my Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor already semi-rotund form which bodes ill for my blood sugar as well as my once slender shape. But the combo of cold weather and the inner primitive aspect of our inner cave child also brings with it another effect. That is, the desire to curl up under a heap of covers and conk out. Yessah, in this respect we are like animals who make a long snooze of winter’s blasts. I know you have seen those nature shows where the TV crew places a GoPro or some other little camera in a bear’s den and films as the beast snores and twitches and licks its lips in its sleep as it dreams of a big jar of honey or a fragrant dumpster it will rummage through come summer and tourists. I too sometimes enter this dream state as I am in REM snooze-mode but occasionally I get a whiff of something dreadful and awake to discover it is halitosis. Well, that’s my take on the irrefutable link between cold and the primitive urges it drives man and beast to in the interest of staying alive until next spring when the cycle of the seasons will once again propel us into what Winston Churchill called “broad, sunlit, uplands”.
Meditations What makes a leader? Once there was a leader whose position and what others thought determined her identity. One day, after declining opportunities and the positions ceased, the leader questioned, “Who am I? What is my purpose?” Yes, this leader was me twelve years ago. I have seen leaders elevate the job until their identity was lost. I know people who cannot retire because they don’t know who they are outside their title or job. When asked who we are without the job or position, we have difficulty articulating an answer. What makes a leader? How can we lead faithfully and effectively? One evening, I sat in my prayer room and asked God to teach me how to lead. While sitting in the silence of my room, these words entered my heart. First, always acknowledge the holy God and my place before Him. When Isaiah was in the temple on the Lord’s day, he acknowledged a holy God who filled the temple. As a result, Isaiah realized who he was before a holy God. Isaiah realized he needed healing and redemption. “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 6:5 NKJV. When Isaiah realized who he was before God, God sent seraphim to touch his mouth,
Creating memories with dignity & respect
to cleanse and heal him, “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.” Isaiah Rev. Angela Pleasants 6:7 NKJV. District I also heard the Superintendent words stay submitted of Catawba Valley to God. “Therefore Methodist Churches submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 NKJV. Submitting to God is coming to him in repentance. Repentance involves change, change of heart, and direction. And also, as a leader, stay yielded to the Holy Spirit. “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16 NKJV. A person who fully yields to the Holy Spirit surrenders complete control to the Spirit. When we live fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit, we bring glory to God. As a leader, serve fully and faithfully. There is nothing wrong with advancing in your work. Just remember, do not permit your position, job, or what others think of you be elevated higher than God in your life. Recognize the holy God, submit to him, and yield to the Spirit’s guidance.

The Armor of God Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
This week we will celebrate Halloween. It is always a time of haunted houses, trick or treating, and watching scary movies. Some people take Halloween very seriously, while others see it simply as a holiday for children to wear costumes and have fun. Regardless of your view of Halloween, no person could ever deny that our world is full of evil. Evil is real, and Satan is real. Although we face evil, we have a loving God who walks with us. Not only does God walk with us, He provides the tools we need to stand against evil. We call this the armor of God. When we think of armor, we think of the suits of armor knights wore in Medieval days. However, the Apostle Paul would have been familiar with the basic armor of a Roman soldier of his day. Paul wrote about the armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18 using the description of a Roman soldier. Paul said we are to wear the belt of truth. In a world of lies and deception, we need the ultimate source of truth, Jesus Christ. We must put on the breastplate of righteousness. Alone, we are sinners who can never be righteous, yet through our faith in Jesus, we are righteous. Paul said we should cover our feet with the gospel of
peace. As Christians, as we go out into our communities, we need to take our steps in the gospel. Our world needs the peace that comes through Rev. Trent Tankin the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul also reminds us to carry the shield of faith. Every Roman soldier carried a shield to repel the arrows of the enemy. Our shield is our faith. When we stand firm in our faith, we can face anything Satan throws at us. We also need the helmet of salvation. Nothing protects us like the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Everything we are, is because of our salvation found in Jesus. The last component we need is our weapon, our sword. Our sword is the Word of God. The Bible provides the roadmap to everything we need in this life. Satan will do everything he can to defeat us, wreck our lives, and destroy our families. With the armor of God, we can face anything. As we approach a world so evil, and so violent, it is time for us to suit up in our armor. It is time to strengthen our faith, and take our sword, the Bible. As we do, we can confidently face Satan, and he will flee from us! We have the power and protection of God on our side, and we can rest easy in His armor.

could trust. He looked back on his beginnings as a coach at parks and rec. as the foundation and essence for that feeling. “When I was coaching kids I tried to built a relationship with them,” he said. “Now, those kids are adults with their own families. I hope my legacy is one of trust.” Jackson’s desire to guide and mentor youth will also be a big part of his retirement. He plans to achieve that goal with the non-profit Danny Jackson Leadership Institute. “I want to teach the principles of leadership to young people in middle and high school,” he said. In addition to his city duties, Jackson has managed to find time for other civic involvements including the United Way, serving on the Mt. Holly Community Relief Organization Board, the Gaston County Land Use Planning Committee, and the Gaston Outside Image Campaign Committee. He’s also a founding member of the Mt. Holly Black History Committee and has served as president of the Mt. Holly

Over the years, he has received numerous awards including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award, the Kay Jackson Living Legend Award, the Jessie Mae Robinson Humanitarian Award, and being named Mt. Holly Man of the Year 2016 to name a few.. Jackson’s biggest accolade was presented to him at the Oct. 12 city council meeting- the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. That prestigious award is the highest that the State of North Carolina gives to people who have made significant contributions to their communities, in their profession, and to the state. “Receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was a great honor and totally unexpected,” Jackson said. “I am thankful to everyone who brought it about.” Other retirement good wishes also have also come Jackson’s way from the offices of Congressman Patrick McHenry and NC Rep. John Torbett. Another trait that Jackson
Danny Jackson was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine at the Oct. 12th city council meeting. The award is the highest that the State of North Carolina bestows on its citizens. and all great leaders have is to give a tip of the hat to others for their support. “I appreciate the Banner and the good things it has done for me and the City of Mt. He plans to spend it with his wife Kay,

their four children, and his grandchildren. Overall, Jackson has been and will continue to be a beacon of light in Mt. Holly. “I have always wanted to be a good representative of Mt. Holly,” he said. “I have always wanted to do what was best for the city. I am so grateful for the opportunity the city has given me and I hope it has been an even exchange.”
so we must keep prevention at the forefront,” said Governor Cooper. “Wearing a mask shows you care about people. Wearing a mask is an easy way to protect our communities and look out for each other. Confronting the virus head on and doing our part as individuals is good for our health and good for our economy.” Health and Human Services Dr. Mandy Cohen and Secretary of Department of Public Safety Erik Hooks also sent a letter to local officials in communities with increased viral spread urging their continued action in fighting COVID-19 and suggesting additional measures to mitigate its spread. “We are doing everything we can to slow the spread of this virus. This simple fact is we can’t do it on our own. Ignoring the virus doesn’t make it go away – just the opposite,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. “As hard as this is, it will end. We will get through this. Let’s do it by looking out for one another. Whatever your reason, get behind the mask.” Trajectory in COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Surveillance
Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVID-like illness is level. Trajectory of Confirmed Cases Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory of cases is increasing. Trajectory in Percent of Tests Returning Positive Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory in percent of tests returning positive is increasing but is lower than it was during the last time North Carolina’s cases were at their peak in July. Trajectory in Hospitalizations Over 14 Days-North Carolina’s trajectory of hospitalizations is increasing. In addition to these metrics, the state continues building capacity to adequately respond to an increase in virus spread in testing, tracing and prevention. Laboratory Testing-Testing capacity is high. Tracing Capability- The state is continuing to hire contact tracers to bolster the efforts of local health departments. COMMUNITY BRIEFS
How many of us have had positions of authority as an employer, husband/wife, father/ mother, committee member or team member? As the leader, how did we do? I thought about that this morning and recalled one painful experience in 1983 where I failed miserably. Many of us know that few other people are like us because we are uniquely made by God, but we fail to consider that well enough and end up often assuming people do think exactly like us, are nice like us, and have needs just like us. I did that while president of a prolife ministry in Texas and, over three years it took a toll on my staff and volunteers; and I didn’t even see it coming. I’m analytical by the Lord’s construction. I’m energized by keeping track of details and figuring out how to get from point A to B. I know people like to be affirmed for their roles and contributions but I thought a recognition banquet once a year was enough; for me, an occasional attaboy was enough so my thinking was it was probably enough for everyone else too; otherwise they would have told me right? Phillip Keller, in his book A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, notes that we all are pretty gregarious; like to connect with one another; want to belong. And we “don’t want to be different in a deep, distinctive way.” I guess that’s his way of saying we want to fit in and don’t you think that’s largely true? Everyone on my prolife staff was passionate about our ministry mission and for offering a wide spectrum of practical helps to our
clients and their families in need. What I lost sight of were the needs of my own staff and 200 volunteers. And I misunderstood how my analytical nature could easily focus Dennis Siracusa on the mission and speed off that direction without considering anyone alongside me. I read a lot and seemed often to have something to say about most things. I lacked honed and sensitive listening and questioning skills; skills seeking perspectives and inputs. And because I always seemed to be in a rush to get from point A to B, people often didn’t challenge me or even try to insert their thoughts into our planning process. What if I had slowed my pace down more and learned, not only how to listen better, but to ask more questions. A detective show advertisement noted “if you ask the right questions you can learn anything.” That’s a pretty sweeping statement but the idea has merit and suggests that we should learn that skill and ask the right questions in the right moment too. Phillip Keller in his book Salt for Society wrote, “Mercy is to care, and care deeply about one another.” I wonder what would have happened if I had been more sensitive to those I was responsible to. What if I had been a better shepherd to my staff and volunteers like Jesus Christ is to me? What if we all ask ourselves the same question? How may our world be benefitted?

American & Efird invests in US Platform
Congratulations to GEMS Admin. Support Spec. Jean Norkett, on her 30 years of dedicated service to Gaston County EMS. Jean joined the organization as an EMT-Intermediate. She spent seven years working on the ambulance and then transitioned into the billing department.
American & Efird (A&E), the largest supplier of sewing thread and specialty yarns in the US and second largest supplier in the world, announced today its continued investment in the company’s extensive US manufacturing platform.A&E operates as part of Elevate Textiles, a portfolio of leading textile brands including American & Efird, Burlington, Cone Denim, Gütermann and Safety Components. “A&E was founded nearly 130 years ago in Gaston County, North Carolina and our roots remain here today,” says Mark Hatton, Managing Director American & Efird Americas. “We are very excited to continue investing in our operations, employees and the community that have supported us so well over the years. We are driving forward to vertically integrate and upgrade our US operations
offering new products and manufacturing initiatives that continue to provide our customers the newest innovations and highest quality threads and yarns, with a focus on sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices.” American & Efird currently operates five manufacturing facilities and its division offices in Gaston County. Hatton continued, “Our Gaston County operations comprise the vast majority of our US platform and are a critical part of A&E’s overall global manufacturing footprint, allowing us to service our customers across many regions according to specific needs. We appreciate the support of the Gaston County Economic Development Commission and the City of Gastonia in our efforts to invest in operations and work to maintain a competitive infra-
structure to service regional needs of our customers, which include threads and yarns for the US Military, healthcare, hygiene and other technical and specialty markets based out of the US.” A&E manufacturing capabilities are completely vertical from raw cotton and other fibers through the spinning, winding, dyeing and finishing of its threads and specialty yarns. An industry leader in product innovation, quality and sustainability, A&E is known for its superior dyeing capabilities, color matching and high-performance sustainable products. In further US investment, A&E completed the purchase of the Charles Craft high performance yarn business earlier this month, which included the assets of the Charles Craft manufacturing operation in Hamer, SC.
This acquisition broadens A&E’s product offering related to thermal protection, cut resistant and flame retardant yarns and expands the company’s US platform and manufacturing capabilities. The Hamer plant will operate as part of the American & Efird US manufacturing platform. “We honor our A&E history and take seriously our obligation to our customers, community and employees,” says Hatton. “In the Spirit of A&E’s history and legacy we remain focused on providing the most innovative and responsibly produced threads and yarns. We value our longstanding customer relationships and look forward to growing new relationships through expanded products and textile solutions across our US and global platforms.”

LANTERN From Page 1 an amazing array of shapes and sizes marched down Mt. Holly’s Main St. Lantern designs and constructed in those events ran the gamut from sea creatures to birds, mermaids, a huge beer bottle, and even a vintage carriage with a (real) fairy princess child inside. This year’s parade was just as great. The theme was “The Circus is Coming to Town” and many of the lanterns resembled circus animals and other big top scenes including acrobats, tents, clowns, and more. A balmy autumn evening provide the perfect backdrop to see the parade. As in previous years, the third annual parade had plenty of participation by local schools and students. Schools that took part in-
cluded Ida Rankin Elementary, East Gaston High, Mt. Holly Middle, Kiser Elementary, Springfield Elementary, Beam Elementary, Cramerton Middle, and Pinewood Elementary. Ida Rankin art teacher Abigail McLaurin talked about the importance of having students take part. “We really need things like this,” she said. “It gives the kids a sense of pride in their community and school.” This year’s parade was a collaboration between organizer and Awaken Gallery owner Emily Andress, the Mt. Holly Community Development Foundation, and the City of Mt. Holly. “Cheri Love with the city did so much to help us get
this done,” Andress said. “She was invaluable.” The lantern parades were the brainchild of Andress who in previous years had brought in lantern making talent from as far away as Ireland to help teach parade participants how to craft their creations with hands-on workshops. The lanterns this year were arguably the best ever in terms of craftsmanship and artistic vision. “The people who made lanterns really stretched themselves,” Andress said. “If someone had to have a pandemic project, this is possibly the most exciting thing ever!” See more scenes on page 11.

Catawba Lands Conservancy protects two new properties A local dairy farm and creamery is now protected from development in perpetuity by the Catawba Lands Conservancy. The project was funded in part by the N.C. Land & Water Fund. Piedmont Jerseys is a 266acre dairy farm in Lincolnton, N.C., owned and operated by two generations of the Lutz family. This local family farm is part of the rich agricultural heritage of our region. A grazing dairy farm, Piedmont Jerseys is committed to raising healthy cows without confinement while reducing environmental impact. “We’re extremely passionate about caring for our cows and the land. We hope to leave a legacy of providing wholesome, nutritious and delicious ALL-JERSEY dairy products for our local community,” shared the Lutz family. The Lutzes and the Conservancy worked together to protect the farm via a conservation easement, ensuring that the property will remain in family farm use. Later this year the family plans to open an onsite creamery and farm store to the public. When the facility is up and running, they will craft and sell fresh milk and ice cream from their Jersey
milk cows to the public. The Creamery will also offer locally produced products from other farmers. Farm tours are currently available. The Conservancy values protecting farmland because local farms sustain our rural economies, reduce environmental and transport costs, and allow local chefs to provide farm-to-table eating. Piedmont Jerseys is located in the South Fork River watershed, adjacent to the Conservancy’s 1,065-acre Riverbend Conservation Area. With the addition of the farm, there are now 806 contiguous acres within the Conservation Area, helping to protect the water quality and wildlife of the South Fork. The Conservancy also recently protected 72.8 acres of land along Forney Creek in Denver, N.C., adding to the signature Forney Creek Conservation Area. There are now 380 acres of protected, undeveloped land along the creek, as well as 2.5 miles of Carolina Thread Trail. The addition of this new property, officially called Saint James Preserve, will allow for future expansion of the trail and provide water quality protections in a rapidly developing part of the county.
Crowders Mountain cleanup day planned The Friends of Crowders Mountain invites volunteers to join them for trail work or litter pick up on Saturday, November 7. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Sparrow Springs Visitor Center, 522 Park Office Lane, Kings Mountain, NC. Work will end by noon. Tools, safety glasses, insect repellant, drinks, and snacks
will be provided. Bring your own work gloves and mask, dress appropriately for outdoor work and bring any necessary medications. Trailwork days are weather dependent. If questions, Call 704-853-5375. To learn more check out friendsofcrowders. com or facebook.com/FriendsOfCrowdersMtn.
