Fifth annual Mt. Holly Lantern Parade lit up the town
By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.infoOn October 22 at 7:00pm the sidewalks of downtown Mt. Holly were filled with folks ogling hundreds of fanciful, illuminated paper and wire lanterns as they paraded by, held aloft by the folks who created them.
The occasion was the fifth annual Mt. Holly Lantern Parade. This year’s theme was “Written in the Stars” and lanterns with any sort of outer space angle were in profusion. That includes stars, planets, heavenly bodies, spacecraft, astronauts, etc. etc. One young artist even created an eight-foot-tall astronaut lantern.
Parade founder and Awaken Gallery owner Emily Andress was overjoyed at the way the parade turned out.
“Never in my life have I seen such creativity,” she said. “It was without a doubt my favorite one yet.”
As has been the case from the first parade, school kids
and their lanterns were plentiful. Stanley Middle School student Meghan Rankin (pictured) proudly carried her lantern in the parade.
“It was fun! It was great seeing all of the colors and hearing the bands play<” Meghan said.
Meghan’s mom, Leslie, also got a kick out of the parade.
“It was a fun night!” she said. “It was great seeing all of the groups and their creative lights and lanterns!”
Andress appreciated the hard work all the schools put into the parade.
“This year we had seventeen schools building lanterns and taking part,” she said. “Also, the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School marching band led the parade. They are one of just two elementary school marching bands in the nation.”
Other groups that marched with their lanterns included Girl Scouts and local See LANTERN, Page 7
New Belmont Parks and Rec. building rapidly taking shape
By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.infoWork on the new Parks and Rec. facility for Belmont is moving forward at a prodigious rate. Last week saw employees from Edifice General Contractors and other companies continue working like beavers at the site on E. Catawba St. in front of the CityWorks building.
Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe is pleased with the progress.
“The project is on schedule,” Stowe said. “The crew and company are doing a marvelous job,”
The new building will be two stories high and have 45,000 sq. ft. of space. It will feature basketball courts, a media room for gaming, an exercise studio, a kitchen, a kids play area, and a large lobby. It will also feature a walking track, an exercise
Millican Pictorial History Museum has a new home
By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.infoBack on August 11 of this year the BannerNews featured a story outlining the travails that vintage photo restorer and collector Allen Millican of Belmont was having finding a new home for his Millican Pictorial History Museum collection of over 21,000 images. Well, the problem has been solved and one of Belmont’s most interesting tourist destinations is safe.
Millican’s museum was at
35 E. Catawba in the Abram Stowe House, which is the oldest house in Belmont. The owners decided to sell the place and Millican scrambled to find a place to land. The answer to many prayers came when the Belmont city council voted on October 3 to let Millican move his photos and other materials into the J. Paul Ford Recreation Center at 37 E. Woodrow Ave. and operate from there.
However, Millican will have to share the space with
room, a catering kitchen, and a lounge. The second floor will have a balcony with sweeping views of the Catawba River and Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park across the road.
“Duke Energy has given us permission to trim some trees by the river so folks can stand on the balcony and see it,” Stowe said.
A tentative date for opening has been set.
“We are looking at a ribbon cutting on May 4, 2023.” Stowe said.
A visit to the site last week revealed the extent of construction. The outside walls and roofs are in place. Workers are busy inside installing wiring, plumbing, HVAC, windows, doors, and other necessities.
“The job is 80 percent complete,” said Stowe. “Between March and the grand opening, we will go through the buildings with a check list and give city staff a tour so they can become familiar with it,”
According to Stowe, Belmont is the only town in our area without its own structure where things like basketball games can be held. What currently serves the city as a parks and rec. place is the decades old J. Paul Ford Center on Woodrow Ave., but the city’s needs have far outgrown that one medium sized building.
A letter to the community
This notice is to inform Banner-News readers of the following Community First Media, Inc. announcement.
This decision comes after much thought and it is with heavy hearts that we will be ceasing the Banner-News print edition after the November 10th, 2022 issue.
Since the shut down and current economic downfall of small businesses, decreased revenues have affected our publication dramatically and we are no longer able to sustain operations in the Montcross area.
We would like to offer local businesses the opportunity to allow us to continue helping with your future marketing campaigns, by advertising in our other weekly community newspapers in the region: Kings Mountain Herald, Cherryville Eagle, Shelby Shopper & Info and Rutherford Weekly.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like to discuss advertising rates and scheduling. Thank you …. we value your support over the past years!
Greg Ledford Community First Media,The End. Farewell. Adios. Arrivederci. Auf wiedersehen. So long. See ya later. Sayonara. Adieu. Ciao.
Anyway you pronounce it, saying goodbye can sometimes be hard.
Well, this is my goodbye letter to you folks, readers of the BannerNews.
Effective November 10, this publication will cease to exist.
I have been editor here for a total of 16 years. That’s a while. I’ve covered every sort of story you can think of. Met all sorts of interesting folks. Taken hundreds of photos. Had help from a wide variety of contributing photographers and stringer writers.
Tossed and turned countless nights worrying about the weekly deadline.
But it has all come to an end.
I am not ready to retire but the paper has died.
It was a great ride while it lasted.

As Porky Pig was wont to say…That’s all, folks.
By Tony MarcianoIf you know me, you know that I am a gearhead. I love everything cars. As a kid, I could tell you the make and model of every car on the street where I grew up. When I was eight years old, I received an electric race car set for my birthday. It grew over the years such that I had the biggest electric race car set on the block. As I entered my college years, I began to work on cars, doing tune ups, brakes and oil changes.
turn to their owners as if the accident never occurred.
By Dennis SiracusaI wonder about Adam and Eve after they chose to disobey God. Initially they experienced the stewardship and wonder of a perfect garden but ever after they dealt with hard compacted ground, searing sunlight, and a never ending hoard of weeds. I wonder if they ever felt sick over their choice.
I have a couple difficult gardens in our front yard. Both 8’x24’ and both, this year, replete with weeds; all sizes and types; ones I periodically weed whack to feel a little better. Why did I let things become so wild and woolly? Like Adam figured out, preparing productive acreage takes effort and regular watch care. And like Adam, I don’t have a tiller so working my garden with hand tools makes the task even less inviting. This year, I simply found grocery stores more tempting and that reminds me to consider another garden.
We’re a garden of a type too, don’t you think. We need to be fed, watered and cared for when we’re babies and then, moving into adulthood, we absorb those responsibilities. How are we doing? Are we figuratively brave enough to take a hard look at ourselves; to see if we are responsibly caring for ourselves or sadly neglecting our garden?
Recently we had a micro burst of weather for a half hour; 60 mph winds and torrential rain from the north practically flinging rain parallel to the ground. It was initially unnerving. I stood in the midst of the storm praying with wind bending my trees in the downpour and then a wonderful feeling came over me. I became a spectator as I surveyed our property; not a participant. And after a couple minutes I went in the house knowing I had prepared properly and that my wife and I were in the best hands; wrapped in God’s love and undergirded by His abiding promises.
In 1983 Bev and I started
a small business and printed John 15:5 on our cards. That scripture speaks to abiding in Christ because we are dependent on Him for everything. Since our business was partially a residential repair business, when asked, I often told people “I fix things that are broken.” Dutch Sheets, in his book “Watchman Prayer,” notes that watchmen are preservers or maintenance people. That resonates with me because much of how I view my duties on earth are fixing broken things and also responsibly preparing and maintaining life while encouraging others to do likewise.
So, looking over our personal garden, are we preserved from emotional turbulence, physical erosion,
or spiritual poisoning or neglected and submerged? Are we alert enough to care or when we faithfully inspect our failures, are our knee jerk reactions to keep going “dead ahead” and shift blame to God or indulge in the darkness of denial? Some messes happen but some are invited by us and impact our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Have we torn ourselves free of an oft repeated evolutionary tale, and figured out life is not a game but an individual responsibility before our Holy Creator?
As a freshman in college, I needed a job. A friend in church offered me a job at his collision and repair shop. My job was to take apart the cars that arrived from auto accidents and take off the body panels that were damaged. Then, I had to install the new parts. I remember being handed a radiator brace and was told to install it. The problem was that I didn’t remember how the car was taken apart. The owner looked at me and said, “You took it apart. You put it back together.” I don’t know how it came apart and I don’t know how to put it together. It was a 1973 Buick LeSabre. Fortunately, another 1973 Buick LeSabre arrived that day. The second car was hit in the rear, not the front. I opened the hood of the car, examined how it was assembled and saved my job.
I learned a lot about bodywork by watching the owner fill in the damage, sand, prime and paint the cars. I would see cars come in damaged and re-
There was one conversation that has stayed with me since those days of yesteryear. It had to do with ordering body panels for a car. The owner said to me, “When you make the call and place the order for a left fender, the salesman is going to say to you “left.” That’s where it falls apart. You answer with the word, “Right.” A few days later a right fender arrives for the car. He was pretty fanatical about this. He said, “You never say, “Right.” Rather, you say, “Correct.”
I’ve used this when someone is giving me directions. They’ll say, “Go to the third light and make a left. Got it.” To which I don’t reply, “Right.” Rather, I always say, “Correct.” It’s been funny listening to my wife use the word, “Correct” instead of using the word, “Right.”
It doesn’t sound significant, yet it’s important. Imagine being under a tight time crunch to have a car repaired and you order a left fender. When the order is being confirmed, you say, “right.” A
few days later a passenger side front fender arrives instead of a driver’s side front fender.
There is a verse that speaks to this idea of thinking what you are doing is right, but could be bad, really bad. Allow me to let the Scripture speak for itself. “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Sin sounds good. Sin appears to meet our deepest need. Sin appears to make all the bad go away. At the end of the day, sin destroys us.
There is an expression that says, “If it’s too good to be true. It probably is.” Sometimes all it takes to avoid this is to listen to someone older and wiser who has been around the block a few times. They can tell you what to avoid. Right – or was that Correct?
Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.orgDuring the Halloween season, may people celebrated with scary movies, haunted houses, and trails. Often, we enjoy being scared at these events. However, real life can be scarier than anything we can come up with. Whether it’s a health scare, financial difficulty, political upheaval, or an uncertain future, there are plenty of things to keep us in fear. Yet in God, we can live confidently by our faith in Him.
In 1 Samuel 17:32-50, the Israelites were facing a huge challenge. They were facing the Philistines in battle, and Goliath the Philistine giant was waiting for someone to fight him. No one dared approach the giant except a young teenage boy, David. David couldn’t wear armor or carry a sword, so he went to face Goliath with a slingshot. The giant mocked God and David, yet David with a single sling, slew Goliath with a stone. That day the Israelites won a major victory against their enemies.
As David proved so long ago, never fear to face your giant. There is no doubt David was a little afraid, yet he boldly entered the
battle without hesitation. David was confident, brave, and sure of victory. How could a young boy facing a literal giant be so sure? He knew as he entered the battle, God was already there. It was God who guided the stone that day. It was David who would later write, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4, NKJV).
We can confidently face our giants without fear as well. We know as His people, God goes with us regardless of what comes our way. When we recognize that God fights our battles for us, we too can approach life boldly, without fear. One thing is for sure, we all have giants in our lives that we face every day. Many things that keep us in fear, and afraid to try. Just remember, God is with you. Like David, take that first step by faith knowing God is going along for the fight. The world is a scary place, but not when you know the One who watches over you!

Nonetheless, once he got the news of the council blessing, Millican was thrilled.
“It was an answered prayer,” Millican said. Moving his collection was
love.
“With all the heavy lifting it’s a wonder I didn’t drop dead,” Millican said- tongue in cheek.
Volunteers pitched in.
“Some good friends helped me move,” Millican said. “Their talents and skills made it great.”
As far as a place to lay his head, Millican will be leasing a nearby home.
Now that the photos and other materials- including bound volumes of the Belmont Banner 1945-2012- are moved into the Ford Center, Millican will next arrange everything and get his photo resto computer set up.
“The internet and computer should be ready soon,” he said.
Association Recognizes Blutopia
Each year, the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) holds a contest to recognize the top studentproduced media in the state. Gaston Day School’s “Blutopia” literary and arts magazine received recognition in all eight categories as well as 19 individual awards for the 2022 magazine:
Overall Awards: All-North Carolina First Place, Theme Development Second Place, Photography
Third Place, Cover Design Third Place, Layout Third Place, Nonfiction Third Place, Fiction Third Place, Poetry Honorable Mention, Art Congratulations to all the gifted student writers and artists who contributed and who were involved in the creation of the 2022 Blutopia, especially lead editors Charlotte Moore and Gabriela Salas and art editors Victoria Felts, Nuoya Liu and faculty advisor Hazel Foster.
Once Millican can utilize the entire Ford Center next spring, it’s possible the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame can move its collection from the Belmont Historical Society Museum to the Ford Centerbut that’s another story.
What’s the attraction of the Millican Pictorial History Museum? An incredible array of old photos that Millican has restored and reproduced.
The main body of work consists of pictures taken in and around the Belmont area. Most of these spans the years from the 1920s to the 1960s. Scenes the pictures reveal include textile mill villages and workers, schools, amusements such as Stowe Park,
churches, sports teams and players, and local celebrities and civic leaders. More recently, Millican has expanded his photo collection to include early scenes from Charlotte and Gastonia. He has also built up a large number of photos showing movie stars from the golden age of films.
Many of the photos are donated by folks who don’t want to see them thrown in the trash, but rather, preserved with the Millican magic.
The photos are just part of the museum’s allure. Millican knows the history behind nearly every one of the pictures and can tell the stories to anyone interested in hearing them.
“There are so many stories it’s unbelievable,” he says.
In addition to the pictures, Millican also has a large number of historical, local city directories and high school annuals
The museum is an outgrowth of Millican’s interest in photography. After a career in the auto parts industry, he found himself ready for a change and challenge. He opened a studio in Belmont back in 2003 and things grew from there.

Just a few of the activities the new center can host includes pickle ball, gymnastics, cheerleading, karate, movies, ping pong, dance, badminton, classes of various types and many, many more. Folks will be able to rent space in the building for meetings, weddings, birthday parties, and that sort of thing.
Stowe sees the new center not only as a
boon to the local activities scene, but as an economic driver as well.
“The center will be a place where we can hold events such as basketball tournaments and invite as many as fifty teams,” he said. “This will bring people to Belmont who will shop, stay in local hotels, and eat in local restaurants. It will be a big boost economically.”

churches including First Presbyterian in Mt. Holly.
Andress says the parade has grown greatly from its original Mt. Holly roots.
“This has become a Gaston County production held in Mt.
Holly,” she said.
Andress pointed to some of the groups that helped with sponsorship and publicity.
“There’s the Gaston County Community Development Foundation, the Mt. Holly Community Development Foundation, Gaston Tourism Development, the City of Mt. Holly, the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, and more,” she said.
Gaston College receives US Department of Education grant
Gaston College has received an Educational Opportunity Centers program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The program provides counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of postsecondary education, and also advises participants on financial aid options, including basic financial planning skills. It is administered through the Federal TRiO Programs office.
The grant is for five award periods, with the first budget period running from September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023. Gaston College has received $232,049 for this period.
Subsequent budget periods span from September 1 through August 31, ending in 2027. Federal funds finance 100 percent of the total costs of the program; zero percent of nonfederal dollars have been used to finance this program.
Over those five years, the Gaston College TRiO-Educational Opportunity Center aims to help expand educational opportunities for adults in Gaston and Lincoln counties. The funds from the grant will place professional support staff in the community to provide counseling and information on college admissions and financial aid to qualified adults
with a desire to pursue education beyond high school. The Center’s overall goal is to increase the number of adults in the surrounding area enrolling in colleges and universities.
All services are provided free of charge to participants who meet the eligibility requirements. Among those requirements are U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in Gaston or Lincoln County, being at least 19 years old, and not having previously earned a college degree. Priority is given to individuals who are low-income or who have parents who do not have a college degree. Veterans, military family members, and unaccompanied, homeless,
or foster-care youth are strongly encouraged to apply. Services include assistance completing applications for college admissions, testing and financial aid for 2- and 4-year colleges, guidance and referrals to GED and Adult High School programs, career counseling, college pre-admission counseling, specialized assistance for veterans, assistance with scholarship applications, and education and counseling designed to improve financial and economic literacy for participants.
For more information about the program and eligibility requirements, email eoc@gaston.edu.

Belmont coaches share special friendship
By John WilsonThe late Saint Mother Teresa once said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.”
Mother Teresa’s quote alludes to the fact that even one person can make a difference.
The late George Kitchen of Belmont was such a man, a man who made a difference in the lives of so many.
Before his passing on October 21st, Kitchen was a fixture in the Belmont sports community for almost half a century.
Kitchen, known as “Coach George” by those that knew him coached Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and was an assistant softball coach at South Point and Belmont Middle for many years. In 2022 we was inducted into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame. He coached up until his passing at 83 years of age.
Coach George was a decent and caring person. A man who would do anything to help anyone and never asked anything in return. George and his late wife Judy Kitchen had a great love for all things South Point. They were Belmont proud. For years Judy was known as the lady who sold peanut brittle at the Red Raider baseball games.
It’s hard to grasp just how many young people George Kitchen coached. It’s fair to say his impact was generational.
One person who knew Kitchen well is South Point and Belmont Middle School softball coach Leah Brooks.
“He was my grandfather’s best friend,” Brooks said, “He coached my dad, and he coached me.”
Coach Brooks first got to know Kitchen when she was a player at South Point. She remembered Coach George as a true student of the game, a person who understood the
nuances of softball inside and out. A man who had so much to give.
After graduating from South Point in 2009 Brooks went on to play college ball at Averett University in Danville Virginia.
In 2012 she returned to Belmont to coach the Belmont Middle School softball team. In 2014 she started coaching at South Point.
It was upon her return to Belmont that she was reunited with Coach George and the two formed a special relationship.
Coach Kitchen was an assistant coach with the middle school and high school softball programs.
As a new coach, Leah Brooks soon found that she had a lot to learn, but George Kitchen was there to help her.
Over the years, Brooks learned that she could rely on Coach George to help her with just about anything. It wasn’t long before the two became more than just coworkers. He became a father figure to her.
While Brooks may have been the head coach, she came to trust Kitchen’s wisdom and knowledge. In a nod to the hit movie Karate Kid, you could say that Kitchen was Mister Miyagi to Brook’s Daniel-san. To Leah Brooks, Coach George was a dear friend and mentor.
“It’s crazy to say that an 83-year-old man was my best friend,” Brooks said. “But if I needed anything he made it happen. He was the most selfless person I knew.”
As the friendship grew Kitchen soon became a big part of the Brook’s household. Coach George was a part of the family. He was there during the good times and the bad. He was especially close to Leah’s young daughters Makinley and Makenzie.
“He had a special knock
so my daughters knew it was him,” Brooks laughed. “We talked or he came by the house every day.”
As coach Brooks recalled her memories of her friend you could tell how much Coach George meant to her.
The memories brought smiles, laughter, and even a few tears.
In September George’s health started to decline and he was admitted to the hospital.
His hospitalization also coincided with a playoff run the Belmont Middle softball team was in the midst of.
Even in the hospital, Coach George was able to
talk to Brooks to offer his insight as the Lady Wildcats fought for the county title.
On October 6th the Lady Wildcats faced off against Stanley in the championship game. Coach George got to watch the game on live stream from his hospital bed
as Belmont beat Stanley 12-2 in five innings.
After the game coach Brooks stopped by the hospital. She brought the championship trophy with her. She wanted to share the victory with the man who helped the team earn it.
The emotions of that special moment were intense.
It was during that visit that Coach George told his protege, “Leah I’m going out like a champion.”
George Kitchen would die two weeks later.
Dealing with Coach George’s death has been hard on not just the Brooks family, but just about everyone that knew him. He was that loved and revered.
While George Kitchen is no longer with us his spirit is. Coach George’s legacy will live on as those he coached pass on what they learned from him to the next generation of players.

This time of year great for visiting old graveyards
By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.infoNow that cool fall days are here and the spirit of Halloween still lingers, it’s a perfect time to get some outdoor exercise and learn about our local lore by strolling through old graveyards.
The oldest graveyard in the BannerNews region is Goshen Cemetery on Woodlawn St. in North Belmont. This plot dates back to the early part of the 19th century and was the burying ground for Goshen Presbyterian Church that was founded in 1764. It is said to be the oldest graveyard west of the Catawba River.
The ground where Goshen Cemetery is located was originally owned by Robert Smith. It was part of a 650acre piece of property that Smith had bought from two Catawba Indians that encompassed what is now most of Catawba Heights and North Belmont. In 1839 Smith sold 17-acres to the Goshen Church Trustees for eightyfive dollars. Smith and many of his relatives are buried in Goshen Cemetery.
Joining Smith in the graveyard are about a dozen
men who fought in the American Revolution. A plaque naming them was at one time affixed to the cemetery gate, but it is now gone. Most of the old tombstones in Goshen Cemetery have survived, including some going back nearly 200 years, but vandals have also desecrated several others.
Other graves in the older portion of Goshen Cemetery hold members of Belmont area pioneers including names such as Armstrong, Abernethy, Fite, and Rhyne.
Local legend has it that there were once Indian burial mounds and a village near where Goshen Cemetery is located.
The Abernethy clan itself also has a small and very old cemetery at the end of Turner Rd. off Hickory Grove Rd. not far from Goshen Cemetery.
The Smith name also appears on an old graveyard on Belwood Dr. off South Point Rd. This Smith graveyard has dozens of graves going back to the early 19th century. For many years it was neglected and had fallen prey to vandals, nature, and time. However, an effort led by Leigh
Ford of Charlotte a couple of years ago saw most of the broken tombstones repaired. Ford and other volunteers also cleaned up the overgrown grounds and formed an organization dedicated to preserving the site.
In East Belmont there’s a tiny old graveyard on Old NC7 near the Catawba River known as the Abee Cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall. Names that appear on some of the tombstones go back to the early 1800s and include Fite, Smith, Abee, Ewing, and Wells.
Machpelah Presbyterian Church’s rock-walled cemetery off Old Plank Rd. near Stanley was established in 1801 as a family graveyard located halfway between Joseph Graham’s Vesuvius Furnace and Alexander Brevard’s Mt. Tirzah Forge. In 1848, the quaint church was built beside the cemetery. The first pastor of the church was Dr. Robert Hall Morrison, president of Davidson College and father-in-law of Confederate general “Stonewall” Jackson. The small Greek Revival Church contains pews and a slave gal-
lery that are thought to be original. Members of the Graham, Brevard, and Morrison families are buried in the cemetery.
Flat Rock Cemetery on Flat Rock Rd. near Mount Holly holds the graves of several Civil War veterans. This graveyard is maintained by the Flat Rock Cemetery Association and Confederate History and Monument Preservation Society. Among the markers is one dedicated to seven Confederate soldiers who drowned in the Catawba
River as they were returning home after the end of the Civil War. The men had hitched a ride on a fishing boat that capsized as they were crossing the swollen river on April 25, 1865.
An old graveyard in the backyard of a school might seem an odd mix, but that’s the case with the Pinhook Cemetery and Lowell Elementary. The graveyard is on a gravel path in the woods behind the school and has an association with the 19th century Pinhook textile mill
that once stood nearby on the banks of the South Fork River. Among the graves is Nathan Ford who died in 1824. Other graves are marked Harris and Huffstetler. Each year, the kids from Lowell Elementary as well as other volunteers tidy the little graveyard up.
Old graveyards are not only interesting to visit, they are a reminder of our area’s past and the people who lived here in decades gone by.
