Christmas lights go on in McAdenville By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

The switch was thrown last Wednesday turning the Christmas lights on in McAdenville for the 66th year. The lights will be on Dec. 1 until Dec. 26th and will shine from 5pm to 10pm nightly. Each year a student from McAdenville Elementary School turns on the lights with the special switch. This year it was flipped by Ileny Zuniga, a second grade student at McAdenville. She lives with her mom and dad and two sisters- Ivy and Iverly. She likes coloring, eating fruit, and playing with her baby sister. Her favorite thing about Christmas is opening presents Christmas morning. She is a conscientious and kind student. “We are so happy to have her representing

McAdenville Elementary,” said principal Dawn Lavinder. Zuniga was thrilled to be able to flip the switch. “I’m so happy they picked me,” she said. “It is very exciting.” Runner-up and Santa Escort was Anderson Hammond, also a second grade student at McAdenville Elementary. He lives with his mom and dad, sister Violet, and brother Jackson. He enjoys playing video games, spending time with family, playing with his dogs, and riding his dirt bike. His favorite thing about Christmas is spending time with family and seeing people laugh and having a good time. See LIGHTS, Page 3

The redevelopment project at the former Chronicle Mill on E. Catawba St. in downtown Belmont is progressing rapidly. It’s the largest single site construction project in downtown Belmont in many years. The partnership for the project, Chronicle Holdings, includes John and Jennifer Church who originally bought the mill about ten years ago, Armada Hoffler Construction, and Shane Seagle. “It’s fun to see how fast it’s coming along,” said John

Church. ”Nothing is stopping those guys. Sometimes they even work on Saturday. Everything is on schedule.” Plans are for the $50 million residential/retail project to be completed and ready for occupancy by the third quarter of 2022. “We will be opening a rental office and model apartment in May of 2022,” said Church. rate a few trees around the McAdenville Community Center. With the permission of town officials and Mr. W. J. Pharr, President of Pharr Yarns, nine trees were decorated the first year. Mrs. Pharr suggested the use of red, white and green lights, the traditional colors of Christmas. Later, at Mrs. Pharr’s suggestion, the trees around the lake were decorated and the manger scene became the focal point of the Christmas decorations. The

reaction to these early efforts was so favorable that each year the number of decorated trees has been increased. By 2004, more than 375 trees were giving off a warm holiday glow to the town and surrounding area. The trees which are decorated range in height from 6 feet to more than 90 feet. Only live trees are used. The number of lights on individual trees varies with the height, diameter and fullness of the trees. As few as 500 lights and as many as 5,000 lights may be used on one tree. One of the favorite spots for viewers is the lake which is situated near the heart of town. Here are 33 trees, ranging in size from 12 to 40 feet, which ring the lake. The reflection of the lights in the water adds to the beauty of the scene. A fountain, located in the center of the lake, jets water 75 feet into the air. Lights shining on the fountain

While much emphasis has been placed on the lighting of trees, this represents only a portion of the effort that goes into the preparation for Christmas. The town residents play a big part as they decorate their doors in original styles according to their own personal feelings. This gives a special expression of “Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas” from the townspeople to their visitors. A life-size nativity scene and life-size figures of carolers, complete with music, add to the effect. Spot and flood lights are used in varying colors throughout the town to accent

The 3.1 mile course took 1,300 runners through McAdenville and gave them a sneak peek at the spectacular Christmas lights before the official kick-off that was held on Dec. 1. Residents cheered from their porches and sidewalks as runners dashed through. Ensuring that there was Christmas music every step of the way, along the route were three DJ’s courtesy of Baxter DJ Service as well as two bands, Notes of Nostalgia and the drum line from Pleasant Ridge Elementary School. Keith Edward Locke Keith E. Locke, age 75, passed into eternal rest surrounded by love on November 27, 2021. Keith is survived by his wife, Linda Casser Locke. Keith is also survived by his brother, James A. Locke, III (Susan), his nieces Kerry Locke Bedard (David) and Wendy L. Garrity (Dave) and their families, his nephew James A. Locke, IV, his mother-inlaw Carolyn L. Casser, aunts, an uncle, cousins and cousinsin-law, three godchildren and their families, and many dear friends. Born on October 29, 1946, in East Liverpool, OH, Keith was predeceased by his parents, James A. Locke, Jr., and Margaret H. Locke, who were community leaders and owners of James Locke Jewelers in East Liverpool, which was a source of Keith’s great pride and personal commitment. Keith was a proud alumnus of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1964. Keith graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in German. He sang tenor in the OWU choir, played trumpet in the jazz band, and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Beginning in 1968 during the Vietnam War era, Keith served his country for three years as a Special-Agent-inCharge in the United States Army, Military Intelligence, in Munich and Berchtesgaden, Germany. Following military service, Keith continued his education, completing a Master of Arts degree in German in 1972 that was jointly conferred by Middlebury College in Vermont and Johannes Gutenberg Universitaet in Mainz, Germany. Keith served as an adjunct faculty member in the mid1990s, teaching German at

Butler University and Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Keith began a Doctor of Philosophy program in Comparative Literature at Indiana University in 1973. After completing two dissertations and overcoming logistical challenges, Keith proudly received his PhD degree from IU in 1992. Keith was ahead of his time in successfully completing his PhD while employed in the business world, and he also was an early adopter of technology despite encountering skepticism at the time about the role of computers in academic dissertation writing. Keith was a model for demonstrating the value of integrating the humanities into business through his acceptance into a Mini-MBA program at New York University in 1978 sponsored by a National Humanities Grant. He went on to have a very successful business career, including leadership roles in sales and marketing (Manager, Sales and Marketing for Sun Chemical Corporation; Director of Sales and Marketing for the Mansur Development Corporation); business consulting, business coaching, and strategic planning (Keith founded Market Planning Consultants); and, teleconferencing. Keith concluded his business career with distinction in 2013 as President and CEO of TelSpan, Inc. For 6 years, Keith served as a part-time Patient Coordinator for international optometry programs at Salus University; he served in a similar role for Salus’ Veterans Readiness Initiative Pilot Clinic. Keith was professorial in life and in the business world. He was intellectually curious; an avid reader of philosophy, Christianity, and biographies; a wonderful and thoughtful writer; and, he enjoyed healthy debates on a wide array of topics. Keith lent his business acumen to multiple neighborhood association leadership roles, for which is remembered for his dedication, professionalism, and achieving positive outcomes. Keith met the love of his life, Linda, at Indiana University in 1975. Married in 1982, they spent 39 cherished years together of enjoying domestic and international travel, attending cultural events (theater, symphony, ballet, opera), appreciating fine food

and beverages, gathering with family members and friends, watching college football (Go Bucks!), and cheering for NCAA basketball games (March Madness). Keith also enjoyed alpine skiing, bicycle riding and tours, and beautifying our homes through his passion for gardening and nature. Keith and Linda had a very close, loving, and mutually supportive relationship, and Linda is the forever grateful beneficiary of Keith’s unconditional love and support. The opportunities to live in and travel to different geographic locations resulted in the development of deep, treasured, and enduring friendships for both of them with individuals from around the country and even the world. Keith is remembered by all who knew and loved him as a friendly, cheerful, caring, humble, and intelligent man who demonstrated a strong faith and who touched many people through his work, interests, and pursuits. Keith was an active member of the Presbyterian church and was previously ordained as an Elder. Keith is already deeply missed by family members and friends, especially by his “true love” Linda. A service to celebrate Keith’s life was held at 3:00 pm Eastern Time on Sunday, December 5, 2021, with the Reverends Sam Warner and Daria Ragan officiating at First Presbyterian Church, 102 South Central Avenue, Belmont, NC 28012. The service was livestreamed on the church’s website www. fpc-belmont.org. Burial with military honors followed at Evergreen A Quiet Place cemetery in Belmont. The family received friends one hour before the service in the church Gathering Area. Family members and out of town friends were invited to return to the church for a bereavement meal following the burial. For their wonderful care and support, Keith’s family sincerely thanks the ministers and members of First Presbyterian Church, Belmont, NC, including the Men’s Fellowship and Men’s Breakfast groups; the compassionate providers of Holy Redeemer Home Hospice; and, the nurses and doctors at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. MILL From Page 1 The ground between the front of the mill and E. Catawba will be greenspace. The section of E. Catawba in front of the project has been widened and parallel parking space created. There will be a two level parking deck for about 80 spaces at the east end of the property near First St. It will have one level below ground and the other at street level. There will be a total of 240 spaces.

“There has been a lot of interest in the property,” said Church. A building across the street at 85 E. Catawba will be transformed into 6,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space. About the Chronicle Mill The 110,000 sq. ft. Chronicle Mill was built in 1901 by R.L. Stowe and other investors. Workers who laid the bricks for the imposing threestory structure earned $1.75 for every thousand they put down. Timber and other lumber used in the building cost $13 per thousand board feet delivered to the site. The

mill’s name was chosen to honor a Revolutionary War patriot from Gaston County, Major William Chronicle, who had lived near the mill site and was killed in the Battle of King’s Mountain in October 1780. The first bale of cotton was fed into the Chronicle Mill’s steampowered machinery on Feb. 28, 1902. By 1908, the mill was powered by electricity, a move that doubled production. In time, countless cones of cotton thread would be spun at the Chronicle Mill until it finally shut down in 2010.

The South Point Red Raiders 2021 football season ended with a tough 38-0 playoff loss to the Dudley Panthers in the West 3A Finals. While it’s always tough stomaching a loss, this year’s Red Raiders have a lot to be proud of. South Point finished the year 11-4. In 2021 the Red Raiders saw their fair share of highs and lows. Yet no matter what the challenge the team always answered the call. When South Point opened the season up against Lincolnton, the Red Raiders played well and came away with a big 46-7 win. However the win came with a price. South Point lost starting quarterback Elijah Phifer to an injury that would keep him off the field for months. While an injury of that magnitude would normally derail a team for the rest of the year, that’s not what happened. Cam Medlock stepped in and the Red Raiders kept rolling. Medlock wasn’t asked to carry the load by himself. Across the board the team regrouped and worked together to pick up the slack. Running back Tyson Riley was one of the players that took it upon himself to step up and get the job done. Riley ran hard all year. He finished up the 2021 season with over 2,400 yards and an incredible 33 touchdowns. On the other side of the ball defensive backs Will Ross and Jaquis Rumph teamed with linebacker Ryan Harris to give the Red Raiders a stingy unit that fought hard every Friday night. Ross, Harris and Rumph all finished the year with over 100 tackles a piece. At times the Red Raiders defense played lights out, limiting opponents to seven points or less in four games. Other times the Red Raiders defense gave up points and yards but they never broke. That bend but don’t break style got South Point over the hump in several games where the outcome was in doubt. Another player to have a

great year was sophomore kicker Charlie Birtwistle. Birtwhistle finished 2021 with 69 points. He made 54 out of 57 PAT kicks and went five for six on field goals. South Point played hard every week, but still got stung with loses to Hickory Ridge, Kings Mountain, and Crest. Going into the October 18th game against Ashbrook the Red Raiders were at a crossroads. With a 4-3 record South Point was sitting in the middle of the pack in the Big South 3A. Statistically it looked like winning the conference was going to be a tough sell. Instead of worrying about who had what record, the Red Raiders focused on improving their game. The Ashbrook match up proved to be a pivotal moment for South Point as the game marked the return of quarterback Elijah Phifer to the lineup. With Phifer back the entire team took it to the next level as everyone on both sides of the ball picked it up a notch. The Red Raiders finished the regular season very strong with wins over Ashbrook, Forestview and North Gaston. South Point ended the regular season at 7-3. A record which landed them in third place in the final Big South 3A standings. When the North Carolina High School Athletics Association playoff brackets were announced the Red Raiders found themselves with the 16th seed in the West 3A. While many view the seeding selections as a true measure of a team’s success, the rankings can be deceiving. The Red Raiders seeding didn’t take into account the fact that the team was on a roll and was playing some of their best football. It could be argued that the Red Raiders may have been the best mid-range seeded team in the state. Once the playoffs got underway it didn’t take long for Big Red to show the West 3A just how good they were. During their playoff run South Point scored impressive wins against East Guilford, Forestview, Pisgah and Crest. The Red Raiders were al-

You could never take them for granted or count them out. When you’re in the playoffs every game is big, but one game that stood out was the second round match up that pitted South Point against the top seeded Pisgah Bears. Conventional wisdom said that the Red Raiders were in for a long night followed by a disappointing bus ride home. However, the bus ride home turned out to be a pleasant one as the Red Raiders outlasted the Bears in a 27-24 slug out. Big wins like that slowed that South Point is truly one of the top teams in the state. When the season ended the Red Raiders had racked up four playoff wins. An impressive amount no matter how you look at it. As head Coach Adam Hodge looks back on 2021 he doesn’t dwell on the fact that the season ended with a loss. Instead Hodge reflects on all the things that made this year special. Coach Hodge believes that that the 2021 Red

Raiders are an exceptional group of young men. A team he is very proud of. While Hodge is proud of all of his players, he is especially fond of this year’s senior class. “We are losing some really good seniors,” Hodge said. “One of the finest group of young men I have ever been around. They should be remembered for that.” As the years roll on fans will remember the 2021 Red Raiders fondly. This team will be remembered as a team that played hard and never gave up. A team that played with character and class. Even though the 2021 season is still fresh in his mind coach Hodge knows that tomorrow is just around the corner. Very soon the Red Raiders coaching staff will need to start gearing up for next season. “It never ends,” Hodge said of the preparation that comes with coaching. “But I feel pretty good about next year. I’ve already started looking at depth charts for next year.”
