Belmont trolleys will blend old and new technology By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The final restoration and eventual deployment of the three early 20th century trolley cars by Belmont Trolley, Inc. will be an interesting blend of vintage and up to date technology. The three cars are currently housed in the garage area at the CityWorks building in East Belmont where finishing touches such as fresh paint and mechanicals are being tended to. When completed, the cars will look
like new (or near-new) and will give future passengers a real sense of what trolley transportation was like nearly a century ago. The cars were originally propelled by electric motors energized by overhead wires. Needless to say, restringing a network of wires these days won’t be happening. So, what’s the answer? 21st century battery packs from Nissan Leaf automobiles. A group of engineering students from UNC-Charlotte has been working on creating
the new trolley propulsion system. Last week saw three students- Andy Mongelluzzo, Colin Davis, and Carson Lafferty, at CityWorks preparing the cart that will hold the batteries. “We are using our creativity on this continually expanding and changing exercise,” said Davis. What he referred to is taking a rail hand car frame that came from a museum in Savannah, Georgia, and configuring it to hold two 300-volt See TROLLEYS, Page 8

Folks driving down E. Catawba St. near Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park have been giving second looks at what’s on the roadside there- no, it’s not a squashed woodchuck- it’s a herd of goats.
The cloven-hoofed creatures are temporary City of Belmont employees. They’ve been “hired” from Neeses, S.C.-based Green Goat Land Management to chomp their way through an 18-acre patch of underbrush and kudzu. The plot is part of the proposed Abbey Creek Greenway
Belmont Planning and Zoning report details growth and development By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
There’s no doubt that residential and commercial development in Belmont is exploding and a statistical report recently prepared by the City of Belmont Planning and Zoning Dept. illustrates the extent of that kaboom. The report is titled “Planning and Zoning 2021 Year End Report”. The report covers a wide variety of topics ranging from property valuation to where the growth is happening geographically and what new developments are on the horizon. According to the report, Belmont issued 482 residential zoning permits
with a value of $64,332,972 in 2021. Fifty two percent of the permits were for single family homes. Active subdivisions built out 100 percent include Laurel Walk, Morgans branch, and McLean. Projects still being built include Belle Meade, South Shore Phase 1, Belmont Town Square, Amberley, Overlake Phase 1 and 2, and Reflection Pointe. Other developments currently in the works include- Dixon Village: 28 home mixed-income single family residential subdivision, Smith Farm: 76 mixed residential community consisting of both single family residential See REPORT, Page 9

Cost to hire the goats is $58,000. The upside is goats cost half as much to clear an area as heavy equipment. They also eat ten percent of their body weight every day and eat twenty-two
hours a day. They are quiet and don’t bother a soul so don’t bother them. The Belmont goats are kept from wandering to the river or any of the local ale houses by an electric fence. The plan is to keep them on the job until fall. It’s pos-

The Red Pony… or … The Great Rocking Horse Road Trip As scant few of you’uns know and the rest of you are about to find out..the American composer Aaron Copland penned a pretty significant piece of music back in 1948 called The Red Pony. It was for a film based on the 1933 novella of the same name by John Steinbeck. Well…I’ve never owned a red pony, but I know someone who has and that’s what this ramble is about, not a stunningly lively and beautiful piece of music, but a red pony made of wood and Masonite and suspended by springs that give it a rocking movement as beautiful and rhythmic as the Copland composition. A couple of weeks or so ago Sharon was looking at antiques online- her new pastime since a half century long career in banking is but a fading, fading, memory. Anyway, she suddenly started crying. “Why you cry?,” asked I. “It’s a Wonder Horse,” she said pointing to a red pony rocking horse on the screen. I could not help but be quizzical what there was about an old, faded, wooden, red rocking horse from the 1950s that would arouse such emotion. She proceeded to tell me about how she had once had a Wonder Horse in her childhood, and how it was her most prized possession. As she spoke I could see her on that red wooden pony from her childhood, the springs squeaking, her dark curly hair flying in the world of make believe galloping. But as fate would have it her red pony ended up in other hands and died. Wooden horses can die too you know, as do other unloved toys. The story of her red pony touched my heart. We began searching the internet for one. Well, it seems like there are lots of red Wonder Horses for sale online, the problem is the cost of shipping …around $150-$200. So, we searched some more and spotted one at a vintage shop named Maddie’s in Can-
ton, NC. That’s about 120 miles from our end of Gaston County. You can guess Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor where this is going. We arose the next Saturday morning and made a mad dash down I-40 to Canton. Once there we drove past the huge paper mill that belches clouds of something or another that has an aroma like boiled eggs, and we entered the quaint downtown area and parked and strode into Maddie’s and went up the creaking stairs to the second floor and there was the Wonder Horse all alone gazing out a window overlooking Main St. We had paid for him ahead of time, so I carefully picked him up and we made our way down the stairs and out into the sun and then put him in the bed of my pickup truck “Moby Dick”. We headed home. In the rear-view mirror, I could see the red pony bouncing happily with every bump. We took the long way home down NC 18 through the country. The lush green fields of the foothills and the two-lane pavement rose and fell beneath our wheels. The red pony from Canton seemed to gallop along as we rounded every country curve and he seemed to smile at every barn we passed until we got home. Back at the house, we took the red pony out of the truck and carried him carefully into the living room. Sharon pushed on him with her hand and smiled as he rocked back and forth. The red pony smiled back. He had found a home and I do believe he will hold a special place in our hearts forever. Is there a red pony in your life? Some toy or some such thing from your childhood that still dwells in your heart. If you can find an example of one, then hit the road to go and get it. It can be a journey into your past that can carry on into your future and is worth every mile of the way.
Take time to smell the roses By Lisa Harper We live in a fast-paced world. I’m reminded of this daily in many ways. The nonstop (always being thrown at Lisa us) news headHarper lines, weather updates, and you know the rest. I was recently driving down Highway 74 here in town, and like always, there were several speeders. I mumbled under my breath to remind these drivers the name of the road is 74, it’s not the speed limit. But, life goes on. Like me, I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying, ‘stop and smell the roses.’ It’s attributed to pro golfing legend Walter Hagen in his 1956 book, “The Walter Hagen Story.” His actual verbiage is, “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way. Which reminds me of another old saying…The older we get; the faster time goes by. We should be aware of the importance of *making time* for ourselves to not only recharge and rejuvenate, but in also slowing down from the frantic pace of our daily life. We simply get caught up in the “doing of activities” instead of simply slowing down and staying focused on “being” in the moment. Each of us has 86,400 seconds every single day to choose how we are going
‘A Matter of Balance’ workshop returns in person The award-winning program designed to help manage falls and increase activity level returns in person. ‘A Matter of Balance’ is for anyone who is concerned about falls or has fallen in the past or has restricted their activities because of falling concerns. This is the North Carolina Cooperative Exten-
sion’s first in-person program of 2022. “We’re so excited to offer this workshop in person,” said Linda Minges, program facilitator for NC Cooperative Extension. “So many people have been able to improve their balance, flexibility, and strength by the time they finish the course.”
The program consists of eight weekly sessions, scheduled for Tuesdays, May 10 – June 28, from 2 – 4 p.m. All sessions will be held at the Lucile Tatum Center, located at 959 Osceola St., in Gastonia. There is no cost to participate, but pre-registration is required. Throughout the course,
participants will learn how to view falls as controllable, make changes to reduce the risk of fall at home, set goals for increasing activity, and exercises to increase strength and balance. Linda Weatherford 1945-2022 Belmont - Linda Perry Weatherford, 76, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Courtland Terrace, Gastonia with her loving family by her side. Linda was born June 21, 1945 in Charlotte and is the daughter of the late Floyd Ellis Perry and Julia Henson Perry and was preceded in death by her lov-
ing husband of 46 years, H.D. “Buck” Weatherford, infant daughter, Holly Weatherford and sister Judy Lovin. Linda grew up in Belmont and was a graduate of Belmont High School Class of 1963. She was a graduate of High Point College with a Bachelors Degree in Education, where she excelled in basketball. Linda was employed by Gaston County Schools, where she taught at Belmont Middle School, where she coached Girls’ Basketball, and was Athletic Director for Belmont Middle School. Linda retired from Gaston County School in 2003. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Belmont. Linda leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Arin Weatherford Farmer; two sons, Cristopher Weatherford and wife Charla, Morgan Weatherford and wife Heather; six grandchildren, Aiden Farmer, Clare Weatherford, Julien Weatherford, Liam Weatherford, Gus Weatherford, Ruby Weatherford; one sister, Anna Perry

Holy Angels welcomes back plant lovers and gardeners for spring sale The annual Spring Plant Sale is back in person on April 28-30, 10am-4pm at Holy Angels Greenhouse, 6600 Wilkinson Blvd., Belmont. Follow the directional signs once on campus. “We cannot wait for our community supporters to come back on campus and browse all the varietals in our greenhouse and gardens. The best way to buy plants and
flowers is to touch, smell and see the wonderful colors and varieties,” said Holy Angels President & CEO Regina Moody. Many of these plants and flowers were grown by the residents of Holy Angels as part of its Horticulture Therapy program. “Horticulture therapy is working with the plants and having a true relationship
with plants,” said Director of Horticulture Ed Brogden. “The residents get to touch the dirt, plant the seeds, water the soil and experience the plant grow and bloom. There’s a connection there. There is something magical about growing plants and Holy Angels.” This therapy program began more than a quarter century ago and has proven
to be very powerful in engaging the residents. This therapy has been proven to help physical functioning along with decreasing the levels of anxiety, depression and stress. “This program is a way for residents to experience a form of nature. It’s very sensory oriented. We grow
plants that have furry textures, or herbs with aromatic qualities. Working with plants engages multiple senses for our residents,” said Director of Creative Arts Gaye Dimmick. Due to the pandemic and the campus being closed, the plant sales for the past two years have strictly been on-
line. We welcome all garden lovers back to our campus to experience the nearly four dozen types of plants and flowers available for purchase. The sale of these plants benefits the Holy Angels Horticulture Therapy program.
Goat Island Games return to Cramerton The annual Goat Island Games are back for 2022. Come join in a full day filled with events open to the whole family on May 7 at Goat Island Park, Cramerton. All proceeds from the 5K and 5 Miler in 2022 will benefit the Tarheel Trail Blazers and their efforts to complete the Rocky Branch Park trail system. Keep Belmont Beautiful Cleanup Day is community effort The recent Keep Belmont Beautiful Citywide Cleanup Day was a huge success. More than 60 volunteers picked up over 1,150 lbs. of trash. Amazon employees bagged an amazing amount of trash along Parkdale Street. Plus, we were inspired to see old friends and dedicated individuals but also families teaching their children important lifelong lessons in caring for the earth and giving back to their community. Let’s not forget the wonderful representation of councilmen and staff members from the City of Belmont’s various departments: police, fire, planning & zoning, and public works. Last but not least, KBB wants to recognize our local Lowe’s and Walgreen’s for donating some essential supplies for this event. used goats for similar purposes. Mt. Holly had a herd clear out a ravine near Hwy. 273 and Hwy 27 several years ago. Cramerton also employed a gaggle of goats from Horseshoe NC-based Wells Farm in 2017 to clear out overgrowth at Central Park to great effect.

For most high schoolers spring break is usually about relaxing a bit and making some memories. This year the Stuart Cramer softball team and East Gaston baseball team made some memories they won’t soon forget as both teams walked away with spring break tournament titles. Stuart Cramer softball won last week’s Toyota of Gastonia Spring Break Softball Tournament held at South Point High School while EG baseball won the Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament. The softball tournament got off to a rocky start early in the week when Mother Nature threw the event a curve ball and adjustments needed to be made. The games were supposed to be held on Monday and Tuesday, but heavy rain on Monday forced the schedule
to be moved back a day. South Point head coach Leah Brooks and her staff didn’t let the weather out do them. As the tournament hosts, the South Point crew did a good job dealing with the delay. “I think it would be appropriate to give credit to coach Brooks, her players and coaching staff for hosting this,” Cramer head coach James Brown said. “I know they had to move things around because it rained on Monday and I know it’s a lot of work trying to dry the infield.” While nature did its thing that never damped the mood of the event. Once the action got underway it soon became clear that Stuart Cramer was going to dominate this year. The Storm won the title by beating South Point 15-3, East Gaston 12-0 and Forestview 5-0 in the final. In the win against South The East Gaston baseball team is all smiles after winning the 2022 Gaston County Easter Baseball Tournament. This year’s Point, Hadley Womack took victory marked the sixth time EG has won the annual event held at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia.

the mound and pitched the entire game giving up only three hits and delivering five strikeouts. In the East Gaston and Forestview games, Emma Donaldson started and played well. Donaldson was in total control against the Lady Warriors fanning eight East Gaston batters on her way to pitching a shutout. Things got a little tougher when the Storm faced off against the Lady Jags in the final. In that one, Donaldson still came through in the clutch giving up five hits, but also striking out eight Forestview batters. In recognition of her strong performance, Emma would go on to be named the tournament’s MVP. While it’s true that Donaldson delivered a stellar performance, what really made this tournament special for Cramer was the fact that players who normally aren’t in the
spotlight stepped up big time. “We had two players, Madison Lee and Addy Marr who got their first career home runs,” Brown said. “Both of those girls also got All-Tournament selections.” A breakdown of the postgame stats show that Marr and Lee really had a good run. Marr finished the tournament with three hits and six RBIs while Lee would finish with four hits and six RBIs. In addition to Marr, Lee and Donaldson receiving accolades, Braley Hamilton was also named to the All-Tournament team as well. Hamilton wielded a heavy bat all week ending the tournament with five hits. Across the board, Coach Brown was happy with the way his team performed. “Everyone contributed both offensively and defensively,” Brown went on to say. “We had a couple of girls really step up on both sides of the ball.” On the baseball side of things, the East Gaston Warriors won their sixth Gaston County Easter Baseball Tour-
nament title. The annual classic held at Sims Legion Park has a long tradition dating back to 1987. The last time the Warriors won the county championship was in 2016. This year East Gaston got it done playing their version of small-ball. An offensive philosophy that emphasizes placing runners on base and then advancing them into scoring position. East Gaston got their first win of the tournament on Monday with a big 13-3 blowout of Bessemer City. Bryce Benson got the start and did a good job in three innings of action. The junior hurler got the win without giving up a run. While facing Benson, Yellowjacket batters only managed two hits. Benson wasn’t the only EG pitcher to take the mound. Gracen Mahadeo came in relief and did well pitching for three innings. While Bryce Benson did a good job on the mound, he did even better swinging a bat. In the second game of the tournament East Gaston held off a late rally by Forestview to walk away with an 8-4 win. One of the keys to the victory was a strong sixth inning performance where the Warriors scored four runs. Right hander Elijah Sutherland got the start and managed to hold his own. In well over five innings of play. Sutherland allowed four runs on seven hits. He also struck out four Forestview batters.
Sutherland got a little bit of help toward the end of the game when Dylan Howell came in and pitched for one and one-third innings in a relief role. In the Forestview game, EG’s top batter was Logan Agosta. Agosta finished the game with a .750 batting average by going 3-for-4. In the championship game, the Warriors took on a familiar foe when they faced off with the North Gaston Wildcats.
The last time the Warriors and Wildcats played was in March. In that one North Gaston blanked EG 5-0. In the re-match East Gaston got a bit of payback when Parker Agosta took the mound and decimated the Wildcat batting lineup. Agosta had a sensational game striking out 11 batters
while only giving up one hit and no runs in over seven innings of action. In addition to pitching well Parker joined his brother Logan Agosta, Dylan Howell, Liam Brady and Daniel McClellan in churning out multiple hits to power the East Gaston offense. In all the Warriors belted out 11
hits. Winning the county championship is a big deal. Head coach Randy Sellers and his squad did a heck of a job this year. “I’m very proud of our team’s preparation, focus and play during the tournament,” coach Sellers said. “Their effort and intensity
while pulling for their teammates was instrumental in winning the championship.” This week East Gaston and Cramer will get back to regular season action. The Warriors have games this week against R-S Central and North Gaston while Cramer plays Ashbrook and Kings Mountain.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Many questions Dennis Siracusa (She,) “Don’t tell me you found God or something.” (He,) “It’s more like He found me!” That’s my story. Into my late 20’s, I wandered through life watching for interesting opportunities; open doors and using my soul, (mind, will, and emotions) to sort my selections. In hindsight now, after committing my life to Jesus Christ, and reading God’s Word almost daily for the last 40 years reality still seems foggy, but by rubbing some of the fog from figurative glass, I see with greater clarity. Our omnipotent, eternal God seems impossible to many but alternative humanistic philosophical constructs are so flawed they leave us floundering and hopeless. Throughout scripture God holds out hope for everything while humanism leaves us grasping at nothing. Over the last 40+ years I’ve discovered a few things about God. First, while wandering through my life into my late 20’s, God knew I’d wander and wonder and He knew I wanted to understand what I was seeing; that I was looking for Him; wanting to understand Him too. So, our infinite God used this desire and all He sovereignly knew about me to allow choices in front of me He knew I’d choose; choices that sequentially for decades finally positioned me where His truth could capture my heart. How He did that for me is undoubtedly unique but I’m pretty sure, if you look hard enough, you’ll see a similar dynamic in your life. I’ve universally discovered that making any sense of our existing world and this creation story must begin with our mature understanding of who God is and why He

Trent Rankin wants to have relationship with us; and here we need to be careful because the answers we seek must be His answers, not our flimsy notions; I’ve made that mistake countless Dennis Siracusa times. Steven J. Lawson, a teaching fellow for Ligonier Ministries says “A true, intimate relationship with God is not based on our own ideas about what God is like. If we really want to know God, we must approach Him based on the knowledge of who He reveals Himself to be in His Word.” How do we do that? In 1979 I devoured the bible daily for 6 months. My understanding was superficial because I didn’t have “spiritual insight” to see God’s truth deeply. I appreciated the art of the bible, the history of humanity, the autobiographies and biographies and while I didn’t understand a lot some things sunk in. Heaven and Hell were real, eternity was real, God was real and God’s love had to be real; who would die like that for someone like me? The notion of God’s grace kept captivating me and seeing grace in John 3:16, 17 and Ephesians 2:8-9 reaching out to me … free, to save me became something I desperately wanted. I grabbed the Lord’s offer and was transformed. Now God’s Holy Spirit lives in me and while I still have questions, I also see a lot more clearly. “Sono imperfetto!” Always will be this side of heaven, but Jesus’ disciples get progressively better while those who aren’t can only spiral downward. Life is dynamic not static.

For Christians everywhere, Easter is the ultimate day. It is the day we celebrate the life we have because Jesus lives. Easter is a busy time. There are church egg hunts, sunrise services, and many special services and opportunities to worship Jesus together. When Easter is over, because of the busy season and schedules, it can be easy to want to rest and just get away for a while. In John 21:1-14, we find the disciples after the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus had appeared to them two times. He was no longer with them every day as He had been. One day Peter said he was going fishing, and several other of the disciples went with him. They fished all that night but caught nothing. The next morning Jesus stood on the shore, but they didn’t recognize Him. He asked if they had any fish, but they did not. Jesus told them to cast their net on the right side. As they did, they hauled in 153 fish! John recognized Jesus, and they made their way back to the shore. Jesus had a fire built, and they took the fish and had breakfast together. No one asked who Jesus was, as they all knew it was the Lord.
After that first Easter, the disciples went back to life as they knew it before they began to follow Jesus. They were fishermen, so it was natural for them to go back to fish- Rev. Trent Rankin ing. After Easter, we can sometimes return to our life of routine. During the Easter season we put much emphasis on Jesus’ sacrifice for us on the cross. We worship a lot, we talk about Jesus to people we meet, and our hearts are set on the things of God. After the season is over, it can be easy to forget all of the things we were doing for Jesus. Jesus showed up on the shoreline that day and reminded His disciples He was still there. Easter Sunday might have been over, but the work continued. Our work for Jesus continues. He is worthy of our worship all year long. People all around us need to hear His gospel message. There was much more work ahead for the disciples. They were to go out into the world and continue the ministry of Jesus. After Easter we are to do the same. As individual believers and as churches, we must continue our lives and mission for Jesus!

Belmont Rotary welcomes guests at first reception since COVID shutdown Emerging from two years of COVID restrictions on gatherings, Belmont Rotarians hosted more than 50 members and guests for food, drinks and conversation at the Home2 Suites by Hilton in Belmont recently. Club President Seth Sherrin spoke about the world-wide work of Rotary International and about the history of Belmont Rotary Club, which is the second oldest in Gaston County and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1905 in Chicago, Rotary has 46,000 clubs and 1.4 million members. Rotary’s global mission includes: promoting peace, fighting disease, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies and protecting the environment. Eradication of polio worldwide has been a Rotary focus for decades, and polio exists now in only two countries. Belmont Rotary supports a wide variety of community service efforts, such as getting medicine to those in need, addressing the needs of senior citizens, working with students at the high-school and college levels and many other programs. Guests at the event were invited to attend a club meeting and program and to consider becoming a member of the Belmont club. Meetings, including lunch and presentations on timely local topics, take place each Wednesday from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at the Home2 Suites in Belmont.
