The King’s Daughters Ministry celebrating ten years in Stanley By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Back in 2011 Sheryl Dorsey had a dream of starting a residential ministry in Stanley providing counseling, education, and daily life skills to women 18-30 and their children who may be homeless, battered, selfharming or recovering from substance abuse. Since that time the idea has not only survived, it has blossomed and grown. “It’s been challenging and very rewarding,” Dorsey said of the journey. “God has been amazing in changing and healing the lives of the families that come here.” The King’s Daughters offers a variety of services for its residents. Services are free of charge. These in-

clude- Provide a safe and loving residential environment which includes food, clothing and shelter. Foster emotional support and healing through professional counselors and peer advocates. Proclaim the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ as foundation for all healing. Provide spiritual and personal growth through biblical teaching, partnerships with spiritual and educational experts, and through lay leader mentoring. The King’s Daughters headquarters are currently located at its Center for Counseling & Education at 112 N. Main Street in Stanley. The facility is home to the administrative office, counseling rooms, a kitchen and dining area, space for tots to play, and a study room where classes on subjects such as

budgeting, parenting, and resume’ writing take place. “We try to use all of our space to meet the needs of our residents,” said Dorsey’s assistant Dawn Smith. The King’s Daughters residents actually live in its Stanley area home called Emerald House. The house is a spacious and clean environment. Up to six women and children can live there. The residents take turns grocery shopping, cooking, and doing household chores. “They can stay as little as one day or as long as two years,” Dorsey said. “The house is supervised 24/7.” According to Dorsey, potential residents must complete an interview process. About a decade ago John and Jennifer Church first launched their dream of transforming Belmont’s oldest standing cotton mill building, the 1901 Chronicle, into a showcase living and commercial space. Now, after many stops, starts, and delays, not the least of which has been the COVID pandemic, construction workers are on the E. Catawba St. site and pitching in with a passion. Last week saw crews from firms such as RCI Demolition and the Church’s partner Virginia Beach-based Armada Hoffler Construction, busy with everything from heavy equipment to hammers toiling to transform the mill’s brick shell, wooden beams, and heart of pine floors into a

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS We can all learn something from the birds ~ By Lisa Harper, Belmont Today, my sweet neighbor and I were watching the birds outside her living room window...something we enjoy quite often. My mind took me to a simpler time in life, when things seemed more carefree. One could certainly lower their blood pressure just by looking out a window to observe the birds in their neck of the woods. I’ve decided do just that, and to focus more on nature and what the new spring season will bring to my yard. Since the earliest times of man, birds have inspired our deepest imaginations. Fearless and free in the sky, they make us wonder, what would it be like to fly? While none of us can sprout wings, we can all simply observe and learn from these majestic creatures. They can teach us how to create a beautiful life. How amazing it would be if we trusted our own instincts like birds do. Life is created in such a way so as to enable us to withstand the challenges and overcome the hardships they bring. Undoubtedly birds show us the perfect example of this. Their patience and perseverance stand out in all that they do to survive. While none of us can sprout wings, we can all simply observe and learn from the birds on how to create a beautiful life. Below are six life lessons...inspired by our winged friends. 1. Be confident- birds learn to trust themselves before they take off in the sky. So have faith in your abilities and know that you will find a warm current to soar in.

2. Let your colors shine- Different birds have different hues..be bright, and make sure you aren’t hiding what makes you one-of-akind. 3. Show up early.... and often- The legendLisa Harper ary early bird gets the worm for a reason. Find something worth showing up for, and then show up every single day. 4. Go with the seasons- Birds thrive despite changes in their environment. Be flexible and go with the flow, trusting your ability to always find a branch to land on. 5. Flock together- Birds seek strength and sustenance from one another. Keep friends and family close by as you navigate the days ahead. 6. Spread your wings- Eventually, all birds must leave the nest and become what they are meant to be. Have no fear of falling...we live life forward, but will only understand it looking back in the years to come. Just remember we possess the same ability as birds; to create something from nothing...allowing ideas and thoughts to guide our actions and behaviors. The ability to use our sense of feeling instead of thinking, to allow ourselves to be our own creators. So this weekend, I am going to replenish all of my bird feeders outside. I am looking forward to learning something new from our feathered friends.

Easter Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org

This past Sunday, Easter was celebrated by millions of people all over the world. Some marked the day with the Easter Bunny posing for pictures with kids, while others hunted Easter eggs. Many people celebrated Easter with sunrise services, and special church services to commemorate the day. However, the significance of Easter is far greater than dyed eggs and baskets, or even a special service. Easter is about Jesus. Mark 16:1-7 records that early on that first Easter Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and other women who had followed Jesus, made their way to the tomb, hoping to properly embalm Jesus since He had been hastily buried before the Jewish Sabbath. They were uncertain who would roll away the large stone blocking the entrance to the tomb. As they arrived to the tomb as dawn

began to break, thy found something amazing! The stone was rolled away! An angel stood at the tomb, telling them that Jesus was not there, He had risen. The angel told Mary and the others to return to the disciples and tell them that Jesus was alive and would appear to them. They retuned amazed at what they had seen that day! Easter is an amazing day, as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ resurrection, death has been defeated. We fear death and do everything in our power to delay it. Jesus conquered death. We may die physically, yet through Jesus we will live forever with Him in heaven. The separation that our sin has caused between God and us, has been removed. After sin entered our world through Adam and Eve, our relationship with God had been severed. As Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn in two, revealing the Holy of Holies, where God dwelled. Through Jesus’ death and res-

urrection, the power of sin has been broken. Through Rev. Trent Rankin Jesus we are reconciled to God. Easter changed everything. Through this awesome act, Jesus conquered everything that we fear. Sin, death, and Satan have been totally defeated. At the moment Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished,” the world changed forever (John 19:30, ESV). Easter was for you. Jesus suffered, died, and lives again, so that you can have a true relationship with Him. Will you believe today? Will you believe that Jesus loves you so much that He gave His life for you, defeating the sin that binds you? He is ready to save you today. Discover the true meaning of Easter today!

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Active imagination By Dennis Siracusa Years ago, my mom made loose leaf hot tea for my sisters and me. As we finished our drink we would try to see if an image had formed in the leaves; a bird, animal, or flower. We had fanciful fun guessing each other’s patterns much like we did with cloud formations. What we didn’t do, however, was make something mysteriously religious from leaf or cloud designs. Some people do, however, and why we pay them any attention is head scratching; like the woman who supposedly predicts things by staring at asparagus. God tells us in Galatians 4:8 NLT “Before you gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even exist.” Why do we do that? Could it be we simply don’t want to be accountable to a holy God? Evolutionists believe we crawled from an accidental pond billions of years ago and floundered around by the seat of our pants until now. I guess they simply couldn’t imagine a God so big and powerful as He really is so they devised their “gods” to be a little more in line with their imagination; conjured up with greed, lust, and jealousy just like us because “their god” must have fashioned mankind in his/her own image. The wonderful good news is our world is not billions of years old and we didn’t evolve, we were created by the only God that exists and Romans 1:19-20 TPT helps us understand that quite clearly! “For the wickedness of humanity deliberately smothers the truth and keeps people from acknowledging the truth about God. In reality, the truth of God is known instinctively, for God has embedded this knowledge inside every human heart. Opposition to truth cannot be excused on the basis of ignorance, because from the creation of the world, the invisible qualities of God’s nature have been made visible, such as his eternal power and transcendence. He has made his wonderful attributes easily perceived, for seeing the visible makes us understand the

invisible. So then, this leaves everyone without excuse.” God is one God in three persons; triune; Father, Son and Holy Spirit and He did create us in His image with body, soul and spirit. Our true God is unlimited, timeless, and intimately involved with His creation. If we do our best to perceive and understand creation around us, we will catch a glimpse of how awesome and deserving of our love and devotion He is. John 15:5 teaches that God is symbolic of a vine we are engrafted into. Similar to an actual vine, as branches we cannot live or function without Him. He is holy and sovereign and even within that He has gifted us with choice. While He is spinning an uncountable number of

planets and stars every second, listening to our Dennis Siracusa prayers and walking beside us through life’s valleys we’ve constructed, He allows us choices; even to rejecting Him or worshipping a stick, stone, or asparagus spear. MercyMe wrote the popular song “I Can Only Imagine.” Like the artist, we can only imagine what it will be like to be surrounded by God’s glory, and seeing Him face to face. Truly, what will we do or think? I can only imagine.

ON THE ROAD WITH THE

In North Carolina, March through May is historically recognized as spring wildfire season, a period when conditions are more favorable for wildfire. As residents begin working in their yards, the N.C. Forest Service urges them to think before burning yard debris. There are many factors to consider before burning yard debris. The N.C. Forest Service encourages residents to contact their local county forest ranger for technical advice and options to help ensure the safety of people, property and the forest. To find contact information for your local NCFS county ranger, visit https://www.ncforestservice.gov/contacts. The N.C. Forest Service offers the following tips to protect property and prevent wildfires: Consider alternatives to burning. Some types of debris, such as leaves, grass and stubble, may be of more value if they are not burned, but used for compost or mulch instead. Check local burning laws. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours. Others forbid it entirely. Make sure you have a valid permit. You can obtain a burn permit at any open authorized

NC Forest Service photo permitting agent or online at https://www.ncforestservice.gov/burnpermit. Local fire officials can recommend a safe way to burn debris. Don’t pile vegetation on the ground. Instead, place it in a cleared area and contain it in a screened receptacle away from overhead branches and wires. Keep your pile small, not tall. Stay informed about the weather and possible weather changes. Postpone

outdoor burning during high winds or gusts, or periods of low relative humidity. Even if you have a valid permit, stop burning if strong winds develop. Be sure you are fully prepared before burning. To control the fire, you will need a hose, bucket, steel rake and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire. Keep a phone nearby, too. Never use kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel or other flammable

liquids to speed up debris burning. Stay with your fire until it is completely out. To learn more about fire safety and preventing wildfires and property damage or loss, visit www.ncforestservice.gov. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and The Lighthouse: Children’s Advocacy Center is planning an awareness campaign that focuses on prevention and pushing resources and information into the community via social media. The campaign also includes placing blue Mylar pinwheels outside some of the County buildings, in-

cluding at the Administration Building in downtown Gastonia. The blue pinwheel represents innocence and reflects the bright future all children deserve. Child Abuse Prevention Month was established in 1983, and the Lighthouse provides community prevention education specifically focused on child sexual abuse prevention, body

safety, internet safety, and human trafficking prevention. According to national data, one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. From 2019 to March 25, 2021, the Lighthouse has served nearly 700 alleged victims of abuse. The pinwheel gardens will be located at Gastonia Police Department, Gaston County Police Department,

Mt. Holly Police Department, Gaston County DHHS and Gaston County Administration Building. Blue lights will be displayed at the Gaston County Courthouse and Sheriff’s Office. Because of COVID concerns, last year’s Gaston County high school graduation ceremonies were a socially distant departure from the usual festivities. This year, the Class of 2021 event will look more like the traditional deal- but with a twist on the time frame. Ergo, Gaston County Schools plans to hold inperson ceremonies for high school graduations and the ceremonies will be held outdoors in cohorts. The graduations were originally scheduled for Saturday, May 29, but Gaston Schools leaders approved a plan at the March 15 meeting that will break graduation up into groups and times to

allow for current COVID19 protocols. Graduation for most Gaston County high schools will be held the night of Friday, May 28. Traditionally, graduations were held on Saturday mornings. Each school would hold two graduation ceremonies on May 28, with the Cohort A family starting at 5:30 p.m. and Cohort B family starting at 8 p.m.: These schools include: Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, East Gaston, Forestview, Highland Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point, Stuart W. Cramer. The following schools will hold graduation ceremonies on the following days: Gaston Early College - May 20, Gaston Virtual Academy - May 26, Warlick - May 26,

Webb - May 26. Of course, COVID and other safety practices will be in place at the events. These will include- health screening, temperature checks, metal detecting, masks required, social distancing. Graduation seniors will be required to stay for both ceremonies and the entire class will march into and out of the stadium together. In the event of inclement weather, a second attempt to hold the ceremonies would be on Saturday, May 29 at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Gaston Schools also plans to offer a minimum of four tickets per graduate, and a pre-recorded video showing each graduate will be available for those unable to attend the ceremonies.

“They come from all over,” she said. “Most are from Gaston County, but as far away as Asheville.” Where does the funding for The Kings Daughters come from? Nearly half (47%) comes from the organization’s bargain store the Penny Thrift Shop at 530 Hwy. 27 in Stanley. The store features a wide variety of clothes, household furnishings, and other items at bargain prices. Volunteers keep the store organized and operating efficiently. All

store proceeds go directly back to the ministry. “It’s a wonderful cause,” said volunteer Cindy Hammond. “I volunteer because I wanted to give back to the community.” Other funding comes from donations (40%), fundraisers (10%), and grants and reimbursements (4%), Overall, The King’s Daughters Ministry is stepping up to provide a helping hand for folks caught in difficult circumstances and a way to rise above therm.

“God is already at work in the lives of our residents,” said Dorsey. “He just invites us to participate.” If your group would like to find out more about this amazing opportunity to rescue young women at risk contact the ministry office for more information at 704-263-4204 or visit www. kdmonline.org The Kings Daughters Ministry is a 501 C3 non-denominational ministry.

happen,” he said. “It’s amazing what’s going on here.” According to Church, when completed in the autumn of 2022, the $50 million project will have 238 apartments as well as 9,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. Studio and one bedroom apartments, which will comprise about seventy percent of the residential area, will rent for around $1,000-$1,600 a month. Units will feature open and airy lofts, have exposed brick walls, and boast expansive windows amplifying tons of natural light. Modern upscale finishes and high-tech features will also be part of the package. There will be plenty of amenities such as a clubhouse and pool. The entire mill site is about seven acres. The land behind the mill will have a new 150-apartment building while the mill itself will have

around 90 apartments plus parking. There will be greenspace along E. Catawba St. in front of the Mill. It will be called Chronicle Green. A walkway in front of the building will connect the greenspace to E. Catawba and to N. Main St. There will be a parking deck for about 80 spaces at

the east end of the property near First St. There will be a total parking 240 spaces. Church believes the Chronicle Mill apartments will be a financial boon to Belmont. “Each family in the community spends around $19,000 annually,” he said. See CHRONICLE, Page 7

He also gave a nod to his wife. “I could not have done it without her support,” he said. In addition to the Chron-

icle building proper, Church also has plans for the adjacent property he owns straddling First St. on E. Catawba. Subject to approval by the City of Belmont, those lots will see the construction of between seven and fourteen townhomes. In addition, Church has bought the office building and parking lot at 85 E. Catawba directly across from the mill and that will become 6,000 sq. ft. of office and retail space. The bottom line? Church is eager to see the dream finally become reality. “We are hustling to get this thing done,” he said. “It’s full speed ahead.” A brief history of Chronicle Mill The 110,000 sq. ft. Chronicle Mill was built in 1901 by R.L. Stowe and other investors. Workers who laid the bricks for the imposing three-story structure earned $1.75 for every thousand they put down. Timber and other lumber used in the building cost $13 per thousand board feet delivered to the site. The mill’s name was chosen to honor a Revolutionary War patriot from Gaston County, Major William Chronicle, who had lived near the mill

site and was killed in the Battle of King’s Mountain in October 1780. The first bale of cotton was fed into the Chronicle Mill’s steampowered machinery on Feb. 28, 1902. By 1908, the mill

was powered by electricity, a move that doubled production. In time, countless cones of cotton thread would be spun at the Chronicle Mill until it finally shut down in 2010.

Celia graduated from George Washington High

School and spent most of her adult life in the Rocky Mount-Nashville, NC area, first working at Texfi Industries before moving to Fox Hollow Farm to take care of her many beloved animals. She was happiest when outdoors surrounded by nature’s beauty. Celia had a caring and generous smile which leaves us with many fond memories. She touched many lives with her generosity and passion for life. Celia is survived by her stepchildren, Joseph Donavan Wheeler of Florence, SC and Susan Wheeler Weis (Matthew) of Tequesta, FL; daughter-in-law, Sharon Wheeler Peavyhouse (William) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Rachael Wheeler Vernon (Austin) of Oklahoma City, OK, Mackenzie Weis Jones (Cory) of Wilmington, NC, Zackary Ryan Wheeler of Charleston, SC, Camden James Weis

Teachers get school supplies from Classroom Central at pickup event Teachers in Gaston County Schools are getting additional school supplies for students thanks to the school district’s on-going partnership with Classroom Central. On March 17, Carr Elementary School in Dallas hosted a curbside pickup event for teachers, who were able to register to receive a box of school supplies. Classroom Central delivered 150 boxes, which included pencils, pens, copy paper, crayons, color pencils, folders, notebooks, and more. The donated items were valued at approximately $24,318. Due to COVID-19, Classroom Central changed the way it provides resources to schools. The organization started a program that allows

eligible teachers to order essential school supplies online and receive them safely via contactless pickup. During the pickup event at Carr Elementary, teachers drove up to the school, checked in, and a staff member put the box of supplies in their vehicle. For fourth grade teacher Takasha Morrow, the supplies came at the right time now that students in grades K-5 are back at school for inperson instruction four days a week. “It’s a blessing to share

the supplies with students who need crayons and pencils not only at school, but also at home,” said Morrow, who teaches at Carr Elementary. During the 2020-2021 academic school year, Classroom Central has distributed $2.7 million worth of school supplies in the Charlotte region and hosted more than 3,200 school supplies pickup events like the one at Carr Elementary. For more information about Classroom Central, please visit www. classroomcentral.org.

Wednesday will continue to be a remote learning day for all students to allow for the “deep cleaning” of our school buildings and planning/professional develop-

ment time for teachers and school staff. M i d d l e schools and high schools will be sharing more information about the transition from Plan B to Plan A for students grades 6-12. Understand that this does not affect elementary schools, which have already transitioned to Plan A for inperson instruction four days a week with Wednesday as a

remote learning day. It is important to note that Gaston County Virtual Academy we will continue to operate for students who are currently enrolled in full virtual learning. Students in the Virtual Academy will continue to receive online instruction at home five days a week.

Gaston County’s third confirmed rabies case of 2021 On Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 8:53am Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement was contacted by a Veterinarian that was treating a sick horse in the 300 block of Robert Road Cherryville, NC. The Veterinarian detailed the sick horse was showing signs of rabies. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The horse died and was sent to Griffin Animal Disease Lab Monroe, NC. On Saturday April, 3 2021 the horse specimen tested positive for rabies. The owner has two dogs that are current on rabies vaccinations and they will receive a booster shot for their current rabies vaccination. Other horses live at the location, they will be vaccinated for rabies and go through an observation period with North Carolina’s

Department of Agriculture. Animal Care and Enforcement completed neighborhood canvasses in the area of Robert Road, Buck Fraley Road and Roy Eaker Road, Cherryville, to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area. Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement notified Gaston County Department Health and Human Services, so they could complete a follow up investigation. The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of animal owners and community. This represents the third confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.
