Mt. Holly selects Man and Woman of the Year By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The Mt. Holly Municipal Complex Grand Hall was filled with folks on May 5 when the annual Community Dinner and Awards event took place. It was back for the first time in two years due to Covid restrictions. “It was a good to get together and to see everyone after two years,” said event chair David Moore. “It was
like a homecoming at church.” The event traditionally presents the Mt. Holly Man and Woman of the Year awards. This year, the recipients were Jeff Kaylor and Judy Cochrane Baker. Kaylor is a Gaston County police officer. Nominating letters cited his many community involvements including being a chef for the Rotary Club’s Men Who Cook fundraiser, activity at First Presbyterian Church,
working with fundraising for the Mt. Holly Police Memorial, serving as a counselor for Camp CARE, and working to help organize the Community 5k to name just a few. One letter characterized Kaylor like this- “Jeff is always ready to lend a helping hand to those organizations to which he belongs, as well as any other group or person that needs help. He is a strong See AWARDS, Page 4

Primary election results... By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Last week’s primary election in Gaston County saw a moderate turnout. Out of 151,790 registered vot-
ers, 24,426 votes were cast. That’s just 16.09% of folks who could have cast their ballots. The race for a new county sheriff to replace Alan Clon-
inger pitted Mt. Holly police chief Don Roper against Belmont police chief Chad Hawkins. Both men invested heavily in the campaign as See ELECTION, Page 5

Community members gathered to watch the unveiling of the new Sons of the American Revolution granite marker for Captain Samuel Martin at the old Goshen Presbyterian Cemetery in Belmont, NC, on Saturday, May 7th. The cemetery is home to 22 patriots. During
the past 100 years, Patriot remembrances have fallen victim to deterioration leading to a renewed effort to mark the graves. The William Gaston Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) joined the Mecklenburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (NCS-
SAR) to mark the grave. According to William Anderson, Mecklenburg Chapter SAR Historian, Martin served under Captains Robert Alexander and William Chronicle, Colonels Hambright, Polk, Graham, and Shelby, as well as Generals Rutherfordton and Davidson. See GRAVE, Page 6

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS A baby in the sun
There may not be a “next time”
By Alan Hodge
By Tony Marciano I was overdue for vacation. It had been a busy fall and the last week in March was the first vacation I would have had since last summer. In November, we booked a flight to Clearwater Florida to visit with family friends. Chet and Joy were retired ministers. When my wife was a teenager, she lived with them for a period of time. Their influence on her life is significant. We were scheduled to visit with them the last week in March. Vacation couldn’t have come soon enough. The day before was a board meeting. The next morning a friend drove us to the airport. We were leaving chilly North Carolina for the sun of Florida. It was a wonderful week. What did we do? You’re thinking that we swam in the water or went snorkeling. Perhaps we played some golf or went sight-seeing. Instead, we did something better, we napped. Yes, we napped. It was wonderful. Every day from 1:15-4:15 the four of us took naps. I didn’t realize how

I had to drive down to Georgia last weekend. I spent $100 on gasoline. I got a letter from my health insurance provider. My monthly premium went up 25 percent. Sharon does most of the grocery shopping and comes home with horror stories about how much stuff costs. I stepped into a local food store out of curiosity and bought a pound of bbq chicken wings and that was $9- sirloin steak prices in the good old days. Once upon a time only po folk ate chikn wigs. Mebbe soon we all be po folk. On the political front, career politicians continue to drive the nation into the ground with their rigid partisan poo-poo all the while lining their already bulging purses with payola and kickback. I defy anyone to refute that. Our foreign enemies laugh out loud at us. Folks come here in heavy masses as they please. Folks seem to do as they please. I pity the police officers. I pity the people of Ukraine. If I could join their army I would be over there in a flash. I saw a video where a guy said he was sitting in his apartment in Detroit doing nothing in particular with his life and unemployed to boot so he borrowed some money for a one-way airline ticket to Kyiv and in a matter of a couple of days he was driving supplies to soldiers on the front. He a hero in my book. It’s hard these days to look on the bright side but that is what we must try and do. I took stock of what I have to be thankful for and felt guilty about letting bad stuff rule my outlook. I have a job I enjoy doing. I have a nice place to live. I have a person who has put up with me for 35 years when nobody else would- bless her heart. I have a few, very few, dollars put back. I went to my doctor last week and she (hey, Dr McGahan!) said I was in excellent health (for my age). I still have my wits about me (some may disagree). There is relatively little drama (mostly self-inflicted) going on with me personally which is nice for a change, and I hope it stays that way until I keel over. I can’t change the world or the nation single handed. I just have to put up with what’s going on and hope things get better. Get Jesu some camos. I don’t know why but the image of the baby on the old Teletubbies show popped into my head. A baby in the sun laughing and googooing. Just looking at the tot makes me smile. Maybe it will make you smile too. That’s what we need. A baby in the sun. A baby in the sun.
Don’t leave this impression By Rev. Mark Costner Centerview Baptist Church
Proverbs 14:16-17 A wise person is cautious and turns from evil, but a fool is easily angered and is careless. A quick-tempered person acts foolishly. When in high school Joe played on the varsity baseball team as the pitcher. His high school was just big enough to be in the division for the largest high schools in the state, yet Joe’s team was ranked high, fourth in the state. Near the end of the season, they had a doubleheader schedule with a non-conference team from a smaller school that had a average record. It meant nothing to them. However, as the game commenced, they realized it meant something to their opponents. They came ready to play. Joe was the starting pitcher in the first game. He
did poorly and was glad to be relieved. At the end of the day, their opponents had swept both games. They weren’t blown off Mark Costner the diamond in either one. Nevertheless, Joe’s team lost games that they should have easily won. When they got on the bus, their fuming coach ordered them to be silent and then told the driver to get off the bus. Once she exited, his tirade commenced. He used every profanity imaginable. As tobacco and spit sprayed from his mouth and his face got redder, his profanities got mixed together so that he invented new ones as he screamed. As Joe listened, he thought it was both humorous and shameful at the

tired I was. It was good to get some badly needed sleep. Since Chet and Joy were officially “snowbirds”, their regular house was in Maine. We talked about my wife and I going to Maine to spend some time with them this summer. I looked forward to it as I had not been there since 1978 when my wife and I first started dating. While in Florida, we were given a bonus day. The airline had to cancel our Saturday return and generously allowed us to fly back on Sunday. We were grateful for an extra day with these two individuals. Since I like to get to the airport early, Chet drove us. Both headlights went dead that morning. Yet he was not deterred to get us there on time. He called us after we landed to assure us he replaced both bulbs that morning. Barely three weeks after he took us to the airport Chet found himself in the hospital. Surgeries were scheduled. Recovery was in ICU. I was confident he was getting the best care possible and would be home in a few days. He died in the hospital only twenty-three days after driving us to the airport. We tend to live our lives with the idea that the time we Proverbs 14 :16 -17. Joe has have on this planet is infinite. It’s not. It’s finite. never forgotten it. went in for surgery. He Tony Marciano never recovered and died in the hospital. Will had wanted to take his father to the zoo. His father’s response was always, “The next time” we’ll go. There were no more “next times.” There is a Scripture verse that says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” We are not given forever on this planet. We think we have forever to straighten out wounded relationships. Sometimes there is no “next time. There is another Scripture verse that say, “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Let me ask you, what are you doing with this day? Not tomorrow but this day? My sin is that I tend to live in the past. I will review past hurts and think about them a lot. Sometimes I bounce to the future, thinking about how I want the world to be. Yet God calls me to live in this “precious moment.” I will never go fishing with Chet in Maine. Will will never take his father to the zoo. Don’t put off today thinking you are guaranteed tomorrow. You are not. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

After working many years in banking and wealth management, the Huntersville resident decided to use her skills in organization and clearing clutter to create her own business and help others. She told her story and shared tips during a program she presented recently at a Belmont Rotary Club meeting. Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him: Opinions By Dennis Siracusa Slogans like “One man’s meat is another’s poison” or “one man’s trash is another’s treasure” are mostly a question of perspectives but dangerous thinking, born from damaged characters, may be close by; our abused American culture proves it. Our 1971 Supreme Court opinion, ruled that a man’s jacket openly displaying vulgar language was ok so the phrase “one man’s vulgarity is another’s lyric,” was ushered into our legal system and culture. In 2016, our Canadian neighbors, influenced by that SOTUS free speech opinion, echoed the same legal sentiment. Vulgarity today is everywhere and it’s not relegated to men only. Women are quite handy with it. Pam Anderson was bleeped out in media coverage while passionately discussing her recent one year marriage dissolving. And written vulgarity is seen scrawled everywhere, not just bathroom walls. And to try to make things a little more acceptable to the unwary, we sometimes hear comedians, or ordinary citizens slightly change a vulgar term to make it sound cute but everyone knows what we mean. Is this ok? Maybe so if we are comfortable with a world where situation ethics infects our consciences and has an entrenched societal grip; where culture teeters toward “anything goes.” But, what if we’re not? The March 2020 Jasper Fire was set with a single match, on purpose, resulting in 83,000 acres burned in South Dakota’s Black Hills at a cost of millions of dollars. One tiny inten-
tional match did great damage. Janice Stevenson didn’t intend it; not to that extent, but she unleashed fire’s fury and many suffered the consequences. You say, “That’s awful” but let’s be careful now not to point a finger because three fingers may be pointing back. James 3:5 reminds us “The tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire?” Can we see ourselves, even dimly? Do we ever say something without thinking and immediately wish we could take that back? Are we really as good as we think at evaluating our audience when we offer an opinion? Are we, our judges or politicians making choices based on righteousness or something less? Our lips, thinking, and actions need to be under the control of God’s Holy Spirit and the wisdom only found in God’s holy Word. Proverbs 4:6 NIV teaches us “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you,” and verse 26 “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.” Proverbs 10 teaches to be cautious of lengthy talking; restraint is prudent. Know too, no amount of self-effort can control our words. We need the indwelling power of God’s Holy Spirit to prevent starting terrible fires. Where to start??? First, let’s learn right from wrong, limit personal opinions and learn accountability to God and reliance upon Him. Let’s take decisive steps as God directs us daily. And be confident that our actions, rooted in good character will yield righteous outcomes.

Some of his notable battles include Biggin’s Church and the siege of Charleston, Kings Mountain, Eutaw Springs, and Braddock’s War. Based on the DAR registry and Robert Ragan’s book “Gastonia and Gaston County, NC,” Capt. Martin was from Ireland. He lived along the Catawba Creek near the NC/SC line. Vision Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church , Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
For each of us, having a goal, a vision for tomorrow is a vital part of our lives. We always need something to look to, and to focus on as we move forward in life. Our lives, the lives of our families, and our churches need vision. As God’s people we need to always be looking forward, with an eye on discovering, and carrying out God’s vision and purpose for us. Nehemiah 1:1-11 records the story of Nehemiah, a man of vision. As he served the Persian king, Nehemiah received word that the people of Israel were in distress as the city of Jerusalem and its city walls lay in ruin. Nehemiah wept over his people and prayed to God to help him. He had a vision, a vision to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the city walls. He boldly told the king of his plan. The king gave him provisions for the work and sent him on his way. Nehemiah arrived and surveyed the broken-down walls. Nehemiah and the people carried out the work and rebuilt the wall in fifty-two days. Nehemiah faced struggles, enemies, and uncertainty, yet he carried out the vision God gave him. Nehemiah was a man of vision. We, as God’s people, should be people of vision.
Without a vision we cannot realize God’s purpose for us. Vision gives us focus and keeps us from being content to remain where we are without growing in our faith and Rev. Trent Rankin relationship with God. Have you ever thought about the vision for your life? Maybe you have a vison for where you want your life to be, or even for your entire family. Does that vision align with God’s vision for you? Nehemiah made sure that what he was doing was in God’s will, and God helped him. If our vision honors God, He will be a part of it. If it does not, it will not prosper. You may not know what God’s vision for you is yet, and that’s okay. Through knowing God better, we can better know His plans for us. Nehemiah prayed daily before he committed to building the wall. Pray daily, learn more about God through the Bible. As you better know God, you will better know God’s vision for your life. If you know that vision, follow Nehemiah’s example and act. Push forward, pursuing God’s vision for you. Whatever the vision that God has given you, you can trust it is for the purpose of honoring and pleasing God.

Belmont’s Jaelin Griffin represents the U.S. in Italy By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
Being young is all about taking risks and venturing beyond your comfort zone. 23-year-old Jaelin Griffin of Belmont definitely stepped out of her comfort zone when she signed on to play professional softball in Italy for the Metalco Thunders. The Thunders are a Series A team in the Italian Baseball-Softball Federation based out of Castelfranco Veneto, a small city in northern Italy about 30 miles north of Venice. Jaelin’s journey to Italy isn’t something she thought would happen. Griffin was a 2017 South Point High School grad who was an All-Star pitcher for the Lady Raiders softball team. Going into her senior year she was one of the top-rated pitchers in the state and was heavily recruited by several schools. In the end Jaelin accepted a scholarship offer from North Greenville University. Sadly, a devastating injury while playing basketball cost her what should have been a promising senior season. Fortunately, North Greenville kept their word and stuck by her. After graduation, Jaelin headed to Tigersville, South Carolina to pitch and study at North Greenville. Jaelin did well in Tigersville, ending her college career in 2021 with a 22-17 record and a degree in health science. After graduation she stayed on at North Greenville to work on her master’s degree. For the most part softball was in Jaelin’s rearview mirror as she focused on her studies. Then in the spring of 2022 she got a message on social media that caught her by surprise. As it turned out, the Thunders were looking for a

The team had been combing over countless NCAA stat sheets and video when they came upon Jaelin. It would seem Griffin’s softball career may not have been over after all. It looked like Metalco was determined to sign the Belmont righthander. “I thought it was a scam,” Jaelin said. “I didn’t think I could get this kind of opportunity. Then I reached out to them and found out that it was legit.” After finding out that the offer was legitimate, Jaelin talked to her family about the out of the blue proposal. Jaelin’s mother, Jennifer
McHenry, was excited for her daughter, but had some questions. Being a mom, she wanted to make sure her daughter would be okay traveling overseas. “We were worried about her safety,” Jennifer said. “So her stepdad went with her to Italy to check everything out. She wasn’t happy about that, but I was doing Mom.” After that trip, mom was more than happy with the situation and Jaelin scurried to update her passport and get a visa. In April, Jaelin Griffin headed to Italy to be Castelfranco Veneto’s newest

pitcher. Once in Italy, Jaelin hit the ground running. The team provided her with an apartment that she shares with a few teammates, medical insurance, and a salary. Jaelin soon found out that the team schedule wasn’t overly demanding so she had plenty of free time. The Thunders practice Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and then play a doubleheader game on Saturday or Sunday. So far things are going well. Jaelin really likes playing ball in Italy. She is humbled to have been chosen for such a great opportunity. “It’s amazing,” Jaelin said. “It’s very different. The culture is very different, but it’s been a great learning experience.” While softball is an international sport there are things about playing in Italy that Jaelin is learning to adjust to. The biggest differences deal with the different competitiveness of the Italian league and the ever-present language barrier. “The atmosphere in America is very competitive,” Jaelin explained. “You don’t talk to the other team. You’re in the zone. You are there to play a softball game. In Italy it’s competitive, but they also want to have fun.” As for the language barrier, well Jaelin is working on that. Thankfully she has people trying to help her and fellow American teammate Kiana Workman adjust. Workman and Griffin are the only non-Italian players on the Metalco roster. “The language barrier at first was very intimidating,” Griffin went on to say. “It still is, but my teammates are trying to help me learn.” The Thunders season runs from April to October with a break in July. After October Jaelin will need to decide if she wants to go back to Italy and play another season for the Thunders or come home and finish her studies. When asked what her

Griffin is pitching in the Italian Baseball-Softball Federation. long-term plans are, Jaelin says she is focusing on pursuing a career where she can help others. “I’d love to do strength conditioning,” she explained, “And work with people with special needs.”
As for now Jaelin is enjoying her Italian adventure. She is thrilled to be a part of an experience few American softball players could ever imagine. “I’m truly blessed,” Jaelin added.

Let’s all recognize New Hope Elementary for raising $15,577 for the American Heart Association through the Kids Heart Challenge, which promotes physical activity, staying healthy, and eating nutritious meals. As an incentive, school principal Lynn Whiteside and assistant principal Ken Loudon (both pictured) allowed any student who raised over $250 in donations to “virtually” decorate them into a “human sundae” in front of the entire school.

Applying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was an easy decision for Wehazit Mussie, a senior at Highland School of Technology. The choice to enroll there became even clearer when she was chosen as a recipient of the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship. Mussie is among only 75 students in the Class of 2022 to be selected for the coveted scholarship award. She competed for the scholar-

ship against more than 3,000 applicants from across the country and around the globe. Being a MoreheadCain Scholarship runs in the family. Just two years ago, her brother, Wehazit Mussie Urael, received the full-tuition scholarship. “I was in a meeting and saw an e-mail from the university, so I immediately ran out to the hallway to check, and to my surprise, I had been awarded the scholarship,” said Mussie. “The first thing I did was call my family and tell them the news. They provided me with so much love and support during the entire process that it feels like their accomplishment as well as mine.” As the second person to win the Morehead-Cain Scholarship in her family, Mussie says she will rely on her brother for guidance. “It is a privilege for both my brother and me to have this opportunity,” said Mussie. “I will definitely ask him for advice, but it is also comforting to know that even though I’ll be far from home, I’ll still have family close by.” Mussie is the senior class president at Highland and has served as a student council representative for four years. She is a volunteer with CaroMont Health and Atrium Health through their community clinics and a fellow at Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), which shares information related to climate and racial injustice through podcasts, webinars, and social media. However, Mussie will tell you that it’s a couple of her other achievements that have made her most proud. “One of my greatest accomplishments in high school is probably winning the Barbara James Service Award for healthcare-based community service and establishing the Period Project chapter in Gaston County that helps distribute female hygiene products to communities in need,” she said. As the HOSA vice presi-
dent, Mussie is involved in organizing school blood drives and collecting toys for children at Christmas. In addition, she serves as vice president of the Teen Action Council, a program through the Gaston County Health Department, which aims to provide high school students with resources to live a healthy life. Outside the classroom, she is captain of the school’s varsity tennis team and is also a member of the soccer team. Mussie credits her dental sciences teacher, Angela Garner, for having such a positive influence on her during her time at Highland. “Mrs. Garner is the embodiment of what a good teacher should be and is overall one of the kindest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting,” explained Mussie. “Her class taught me an array of subjects, not just limited to dental sciences, and it’s knowledge that I’m sure to use throughout my life.” Each year, UNC-Chapel Hill identifies some 70 students as Morehead-Cain Scholars. The prestigious award is valued at $80,000 for North Carolina residents and includes full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books, and supplies. In addition, Morehead-Cain Scholars have a distinctive program of summer enrichment experiences. Mussie plans to major in environmental health science through the Gillings School of Global Public Health and then go to medical school and work as a pediatrician. She is the daughter of Mebrahtu Mussie and G-Selassi Nebiat of Gastonia.

Spelling Bee winner! Practice and commitment. They are two words that Belmont Middle School seventh grader Rex Dover uses to describe his recent first-place finish in The Gaston Gazette Spelling Bee. Dover, 13, correctly spelled the word “ramification,” which means “a consequence of an action or event, especially when complex or unwelcome,” to earn the opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. He emerged as the winner from a field of 43 students representing public, charter, and private schools to win the countywide competition on March 29 at the Gastonia Conference Center. “I am thrilled. I am super excited to win this year’s spelling bee,” said Dover with a smile on his face. Dover is no stranger to winning a spelling bee. He and his older brother, James, won the Gaston County Schools Spelling Bee, which was a special event held in January 2019 as part of the school district’s “Big 50 Anniversary.” Rex won the elementary division, and James won the middle school division. Additionally, James won The Gaston Gazette Spelling Bee in 2019 and 2021. The countywide spelling bee was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. “I have been studying words for a few years now,” explained Rex. “When James would study, I would study with him, and we would help one another practice.” Dover added, “One thing I really noticed is after studying
Rex Dover all these words you see them in the books you read.” The runner-up in the competition was Paolo Sexton of York Chester Middle School. Pastor Ray Hardee of The Pointe Church served as the pronouncer, reciting the words and providing information to the spellers. He worked in coordination with three judges to conduct the spelling bee: Steve D’Avria from the Gaston Business Association, John Forgan from First Horizon Bank, and retired school counselor Pam Neeley. As Rex prepares for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, he plans to focus a lot of his time on words from the Yiddish, Finnish, and German languages. If Dover makes it all the way to the final round, he will compete on national TV. The Scripps National Spelling Bee championship is scheduled to air live on the ION television network on June 2.
Congratulations to the Cramerton Middle School 7th grade. They brought home a “Superior” rating from the recent Festival of Music. Everyone is proud of their hard work. Thanks to Mrs Ratchford of course!
