Ground broken for Stowe Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

The English have a saying “slowly, slowly catch a monkey”. That means some things take time, but the end result is worth it. That adage well applies to the Stowe Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility, a project has been talked about, plotted, and planned since 2006. When the first phase of the job is done in early 2024, it will eventually transfer up to 15

million gallons of wastewater (that’s enough to fill 25 Olympic swimming pools) each and every day from Mt. Holly to Charlotte. Last week, ground was officially broken for the endeavor. A large number of Mt. Holly and Charlotte officials as well as water resource professionals and other folks got together near Tuckaseegee Park where the Mt. Holly end of things will be located for speeches and a look at just what has been done See FACILITY, Page 5

Frolic and friendship returned to downtown Belmont last weekend and that drew large numbers of folks who

were happy to be able to get out and enjoy all the amusement that was offered. The weekend kicked off with the first Friday Night musical concert. The fea-

tured band was The Breakfast Club. The Atlanta-based group was formed in 1993 and is said to be the longest running 1980s tribute band See FESTIVALS, Page 16

since 2015. In that time South Point High School received the Wells Fargo Conference Cup Champion From Page 1 Award in 2017-18, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021. They were second in 2018-19 by .5. This award recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Since his term as athletic director began South Point has had at least 62 NCHSAA Scholar Athlete teams. Coach Hyde said, “This is a school award. We’ve got great coaches, teachers, staff, a great booster club and a community that supports our student athletes and our school.”

Employees of HDR, Michels, Trenchless Engineering Group, and Haskell. “We will start to bore the holes in a couple of weeks,” said project manager Josh Lefevre. “It will take sixteen weeks to complete that job.” (Look for a story on that part of the project in a future BannerNews.) The individual pipes that will be used are 50-feet long, with an outside diameter of 26-inches and an inside diameter of 21-inches. They are made of high-density polyethylene. The pipe sections are joined together with a machine that uses heat to fuse the ends together. Once the tunnel is bored, the pipes will be pulled through it. Currently at the Mt. Holly end of things, pieces of pipe have been stockpiled and some sections are already joined and mounted on large rollers that will ease their installation. When the pipes are in place, in Mt. Holly they will connect to a series of valves at a new pump station near the current one, which is

FACILITY From Page 1 so far on the site. Angela Charles, director of Charlotte Water declared“This project will be transformational for our region.” Mt. Holly mayor Bryan Hough added- “We are here today to celebrate a regional partnership.” Corey Basinger, Division of Water Resources regional supervisor called the project a- “Model of collaboration.” The mechanics and the logistics of the project are fascinating. Two force main pipes will be installed in a 3,000 ft-long shaft drilled through bedrock 65 feet under the Catawba River from Mt. Holly to the Long Creek Pump Station in Mecklenburg County. The shaft hole will be bored from both ends and meet in the middle of the river. The technique is called HDD..Horizontal Directional Drilling.

56-years-old, which will be decommissioned. The new one will feature an electronic monitoring station and a standby electric generator. To help pay for the project, Mt. Holly received a Clean Water State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan from the Division of Water Infrastructure for up to $18.85 million. Eventually, Belmont will get in on the wastewater action. Plans are being formulated to run pipes under the Catawba from a pump station on the South Point peninsula to one in Paw Creek in Mecklenburg. In the end, the project will be a wastewater win-win for everyone. It will meet future wastewater needs by increasing wastewater treatment capacity, consolidate two wastewater treatment plants into one state-of-the art facility, minimize wastewater pumping by reducing the distance it must be pumped for treatment, enhance environmental practices by operating in a more energy efficient

Celebrate May 8th

Let’s celebrate Mother’s Day When Is Mother’s Day? In 2022, Mother’s Day lands on Sunday, May 8! Mother’s Day celebrates motherhood and is a day to make an extra-special effort to recognize and appreciate mothers’ roles in our lives. Often this day is extended to generations of mothers— grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers—as

well as to mother figures. In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May. Although Mother’s Day is a national holiday widely observed in the U.S., it is not a federal or public holiday (when businesses are closed). The History of Mother’s Day

Festivals honoring mothers in ancient times were often tied to gods and goddesses. The Phrygians held a festival for Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods. The Greeks and Romans also honored the mother figure of their gods. Even today, an important festival in India, Durga-puja, honors the goddess Durga.

I hope you enjoy this story entitled, A Little Parable for Mothers By Tony Marciano The Young Mother set her foot on the pathway of Life. “Is the way long? she asked. And the guide said: “Yes. And the way is hard and you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way and bathed with them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the Young Mother said, “Nothing will ever be lovelier than this. Then the night came, and storms, and the path was dark and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her cloak, and the children said, “Mother, we are not afraid. And the mother said, “ this is better than the brightness of day, for now I have taught my children courage!” And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children grew tired as they climbed, and the mother was weary, too; but at all times she said to the children, “A little patience and we are there. “ So the children climbed, and when they reached the top, they said: “ Mother, we could not have done it with-

(Dine in only)

out you!”. And the mother, when she lay down that night, looked up to heaven, and said, “This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face’ of difficulty. Yesterday, I gave them courage. Today, I have given them strength. And the next day there came strange clouds which darkened the earth - clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children stumbled and fell. And the mother told them of God, the heavenly Father who loved them so much He gave his only Son, Jesus, that by trusting in Him, they would have eternal life. And, like their mother before them, they asked Jesus to forgive their sins and come into their hearts to be their personal Savior. Then, they lifted their eyes and saw above the darkness the light of an everlasting Glory. And that night, the mother said: “This is the best day of all , for l have shown my children God” And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old, and now she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage and faith. And, when the way was hard, they helped their mother; and when the way was rough, they lifted her over, for to them, she was light as a feather.

And then, at last, they came to a hill, and beyond they could see a shining road and a golden gate flung open wide. Then the mother said: “Now I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that it is true: the end is better than the beginning! For my children can walk alone, and their children after them. And the children said: “you will walk with us always, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates!” They stood and watched her as she went on alone. And the gates closed after her. There was the glorious light and the sound of beautiful, welcoming music. And they said to themselves: “We cannot see her, but she is with us still. For a mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence with us always. And in the time to come we shall be together again: forever ! “ The author is unknown. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

WEDNESDAY:

During the Middle Ages, people would return to their home or “mother” church once a year during the middle of Lent. (Back then, children would often leave to work at the tender age of 10!) Historians theorize that it was the return to the “mother” church that led to the tradition of children getting the day off to visit their mother and family. In 16th-century England, this celebration became “Mothering Sunday.” Children—mainly daughters who had gone to work as domestic servants—would be given the day off on the fourth Sunday of Lent to return to their mothers and home parish. The eldest son or daughter would bring a “mothering cake,” which would be cut and shared by the entire family. Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters assuming all

household duties and preparing a special dinner in honor of their mother. Sometime during the day, the mother would attend special church services with her family. Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday; the fasting rules were relaxed for that day. (Often, the gospel for the day was about Jesus feeding the crowd with loaves of bread.) The traditional cake, called a Simnel cake, is a fruit cake with two layers of almond paste. The cake was made with 11 balls of marzipan icing on top, representing the 11 disciples. (Judas is not included.) Traditionally, sugar violets would also be added. In the United States, three women were most instrumental in establishing the tradition of Mother’s Day: Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Ann’s

daughter, Anna M. Jarvis. Learn more about these three great women who fought for children’s welfare, health and peace. Ten ways to show love on Mother’s Day 1. Offer yard and garden services. 2. South Point softball player Maggie Mizzell escorts United States Air Force veteran Max Robinson on to the field during South Point softball’s 8th Annual Military Appreciation Day. Robinson served during the post-WWII Occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

United States Marine Corps veteran David Armstrong is escorted on to the South Point softball infield by head coach Leah Brooks during Military Appreciation Day. Coach Brooks came up with the idea of the event as a way to teach her players about military service.

South Point belts a home run by honoring the US military By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com

Honoring those that served is always a noble endeavor. At South Point High, the Lady Raiders softball team took it the next level during their annual Military Appreciation Day. For eight years the softball team has taken a few moments before a game to pay tribute to American servicemen, both past and present. This year the ceremony took place last week before South Point’s game against Kings Mountain. South Point softball head coach Leah Brooks came up with the format for the event hoping to find a way to teach her players something about military service. “It’s more than softball,” coach Brooks said. “I’ve always wanted my team to be involved in the community. My brother was in the US Navy and I wanted to teach my girls something about the military.” Based on the enthusiasm of everyone involved it looks like coach Brooks and the Lady Raiders are really on to something. The program that South

Point put together was truly inspiring. Veterans in attendance represented all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States. As part of the program members of the softball team were teamed with a veteran and given a commemorative softball. The ceremony began with the players and vets lined up along the first base line. One by one the veterans were introduced and brought on to the infield by their player escort. As the vets took the field a brief summary of their service and accomplishments was read out over the stadium’s public address system. Before long a line of 20 servicemen was arrayed around the infield from third base on to first base. When the veterans were all in place the United States colors were presented by members of the South Point Navy Junior ROTC. After the colors were in place the National Anthem and the playing of Taps was performed by softball player Annie Pinto. Pinto’s performance of the classic military bugle call

added to the reverence of the observance. The ceremony closed with the veterans throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. The pitch was done in unison with the servicemen tossing their softballs to the players that had escorted them to the field just a few moments before. After the toss the Lady Raiders returned the softballs to the vets as a keepsake. The softballs all had a handwritten message on them that thanked them for their service. As the spectators looked out on to the field, they could not help to realize that they

were in the presence of living history. Those being honored represented over 70 years of military service. The vets gathered in the South Point infield served in various roles ranging from logistics support to infantry. Many saw action in combat zones across the globe from Korea and Vietnam to Lebanon and Iraq. One of the veterans on hand for the event was 90-year-old Max Robinson. Robinson served in the United States Air Force during the post-World War II Occupation of Japan and the Korean Conflict.

As the longest living vet in attendance Mr. Robinson was happy to be a part of the softball team’s effort to honor veterans. In fact, Robinson has participated in every Military Appreciation Day South Point has done since the event’s inception in 2014. Max Robinson understands the importance of paying tribute to not only those servicemen that were at the stadium, but also those that are no longer with us. “I’ve been to every one of them,” Robinson said of the program. “I really enjoy it. Some of my old buddies that used to come are now no lon-

ger here.” While this day may have been about honoring the military there was also a softball game. The Military Appreciation Day was a big success, but unfortunately the Lady Raiders didn’t have a great day on the diamond. South Point lost to Kings Mountain 19-0. While the South Point Lady Raiders may not have won the game, they did something even better. They took a moment to give back to the community. And in the process, they touched the hearts of those they chose to honor.

Belmont Sports Hall of Fame banquet was a hit By Ray Hardee The Belmont Sports Hall of Fame inducted four new honorees on April 19, 2022 at Park Street United Methodist Church. This year’s class earned the recognition and enjoyed the night of devotion to their induction. Cynthia Hibberts did it all! Cynthia always showed up. Last night she showed up again smiling and brimming with enthusiasm on this night of honor. She was a four-year starter in basketball, track, and as a cheerleader. In her sophomore, junior, and senior years, she was the Gold Medal State Champion in track and field for her event of choice- the 100-yard low hurdles. She was co-captain of the basketball team and the cheerleading squad during her senior year. She was the Kiwanis Club Outstanding Athlete of The Year. Plus, she has coached student-athletes on all levels with excellence. Mark Young was perennial MVP in baseball and football. He was All-State in high school football, AllACC player in football, and selected as an East-West High School All-Star as well. But his achievements were not confined to athletic fields. He was selected as a regular Member of the Student Council and in his Senior Year (1985), chosen to be President of His Senior Class, Member of the United Nations Club, and selected as one of the Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Mark’s exploits gave him the opportunity to sign a full scholarship to play college football at Wake Forest University on the Division I level where he was runner-up for ACC Player of the Year and selected for the All-ACC First

Scott Crawford, Mike Houston, Mike McWhorter. Team as a running back. He proudly enjoyed his induction surrounded by family and well-wishers. Migjen Bakali is the alltime South Point High School leader in career scoring with 1606 points as well as the single-season record holder with 658 points scored.

Each of these records have stretched the scoring parameters and will not (if ever) be easily broken. During his senior season, he averaged 25.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 6.4 assists while leading South Point to their first sectional title game. Mr. Bakalli still holds the N.C. State re-

cord for eight straight 3-point goals in a single game with a win over the University of Maryland. In addition, he hit six out of six field goal attempts in an NCAA tournament win over the University of Southern Mississippi that is still a Southeast NCAA Tournament Regional record. His 47.7 percent three-point field goal completion percentage still ranks as seventh best all-time at N.C. State. Bakali stood tall as he was

honored at the banquet. George Kitchen, Belmont legend- born, raised, and stayed was vetted with honors by former athletes. A local Belmont High School (1953-1957) graduate, George invested his life in the local community. Literally hundreds of student-athletes received their tutelage under the wise influence of George Kitchen. From Little League to Belmont Middle School and South Point High School,

Mr. Kitchen served the local sports community with excellence in multiple ways. He has even kept the clocks of Belmont and South Point teams in his spare time. As a coach and servant-leader, he has served the Belmont community with excellence for decades. These honorees are shining examples of athletic excellence and candidates who enjoyed their night of honor.
