Teachers earn National Board Certification, rank among the best in the nation Twelve outstanding teachers in Gaston County Schools have earned National Board Certification, which is the highest standard for the teaching profession. The certification is made available through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). To rank among the best in the nation, teachers earning National Board Certification must demonstrate their knowledge and skills through an extensive series of performance-based assessments. The teachers spend time examining and reflecting on all aspects of their teaching methods and classroom management. Going through the National Board Certification
process is one of the most difficult things a teacher can do. “Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher was a rigorous, but rewarding experience,” said Sara White of Southwest Middle School. “The process allowed me to show my students firsthand the importance of one’s education and achieving longterm goals. Throughout my journey, I became a stronger teacher, leader, and mentor for my students.” White added, “Being a teacher is an important part of who I am. The certification process helped me to refocus and ensure I give 100 percent to my students daily.” Teachers pursuing National Board Certification

have three years to complete four different components. One component is a computer-based assessment on the content knowledge within the certification area. The other three components are portfolio requirements. Teachers submit written re-
flections, student work samples, two videos of teaching and student interaction, and evidence of accomplished teaching in the areas of differentiation in instruction, teaching practice and learning environment, and being an effective and reflective
practitioner. For Angela Molla of Catawba Heights Elementary, obtaining National Board Certification was the next step for her in the teaching profession. “I pushed myself to achieve this goal through
hard work and reflection so that I could be a better educator for the students I teach,” explained Molla. “The pandemic delayed my opportunity to submit my portfolio components in the spring, but See TEACHERS, Page 5

Mt. Holly PD issues annual report By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The Mt. Holly Police Department has issued its 2020 Annual Report. The information is in the form of a colorful and informative 29-page booklet that lays out not only statistical information about
the department’s activities last year, but also states its philosophy and approach to community law enforcement. Chief Don Roper explained how the report came about. See REPORT, Page 4
The already lively Mt. Holly cultural scene is going to get even livelier on Friday, May 21 when “The Art of Mt. Holly: A Collaboration!” event kicks off at 6pm. R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Lookin’ for Knobby
Getting older isn’t so bad
(Or the lost art of the Sunday drive)
By Lisa Harper Recently this past week I was out running a few errands in town. Mind you, I usually limit my driving time to somewhere between 9 am and 11:30 am. As we all know come noon time and the roads become a bit busier. I picked up a few items at a local store. At the checkout, the clerk asked me if I was 55 or older, “as Wednesdays are Senior Citizen Day”. For a moment I froze, but then quickly realized I did in fact, fall under this proverbial category. She then uttered the following words “You saved a dollar on your purchase today”. The old adage “Time goes by faster the older we get” definitely holds true. It also has its perks as I recently discovered. A dollar isn’t a lot, but they do add up in time. I suppose now I will become more savvy on what other establishments offer discounts. When you’re young, the chapters of your life bring many decisions and choices to make. I look back on those days now and agree wholeheartedly. As I often remind others, and now myself, we live life going forward, but understand it looking back. On the positive side, aging doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process...a journey and we’re meant to learn from it every step of the way. The key to accepting it is to change your lens and not solely look at your life as one in gradual decline. As the sand falls to the bottom of the hour glass, some things may very well become exponentially better. I’m on my own schedule now. I threw in the towel (work) a few years ago. There’s much to be done on any given day now. I often asked myself how in the world did I use to work a 40 hour week, yet keep up with everything at home? Somehow, it all worked out.
cows and horses just hanging out and the occasional vegetable stand. Most country roads in our region have very little traffic and the pavement undulates and rises and falls and curves gracefully with the lay of the Piedmont landscape. You don’t need to grip the steering wheel with a white knuckled grasp and it’s just altogether relaxing. If you are feeling really adventurous turn off the car’s AC and let the wind blow your hair and breathe country smells…fertilizer stink included. So, the next time you have a spare Sunday afternoon, why don’t you plot out a cross country course to a place like Casar? If you see Knobby, don’t forget to wave.

they said in unison. So one gal took a drag off her cig, paused, gazed out the store window thoughtfully, and told me the legend of Knobby got started a long time ago to scare off outsiders who would come sniffing around local Casar moonshine stills and it kind of grew from there. So, with my curiosity satisfied, we headed for home educated about the whole Knobby phenomenon. There’s something good for the spirit about driving through the countryside. You don’t need to go 80mph like you have to on I-85 and similar strips of concrete. In the country you can see old tractors sitting behind barns and stuff growing in the fields and

Ever heard of Knobby? Well, seems like ol’ Knobby is a Sasquatch-like being that lives in the wilds of Casar. Ever heard of Casar? Seems like Casar is a crossroads in the middle of nowhere near the South Mountains in extreme upper Cleveland County. I forget who it was told me about the legend of Knobby but the tale began rumbling around in my brain so I decided to look the subject up on Google and if you Google Knobby Casar NC you will see what I am talking about and what led to a nice Sunday drive to the root of the situation. So, Sharon and I got in my white Toyota Tacoma 4X4 named Moby Dick last Sunday afternoon and pointed it in the direction of Casar. To get there from our house you go to Lincolnton the back way via Alexis and Keever Dairy Farm Rd. and past the Lincolnton golf course and into town then around the courthouse and over a bridge and veer left on NC Hwy. 182 and then you come to Fallston and then Lawndale and you turn right on Casar/Lawndale Rd. and go eight miles to Casar. You can’t miss it. Those quick and dirty directions don’t tell the tale of the drive and how lovely the countryside is between Lincolnton and the other villages and how you pass through an Amish community and how the farm fields spread out on either side of the road and how near Casar there is one place where you can look out the right side of the car and see a huge valley that stretches for miles with the South Mountains in the background. So we got to Casar and I stopped at a place called Mt. View Grocery which is the unofficial Knobby nerve/ info center and they even sell
So now, I will simply remind myself to embrace this chapter of my life, for it is a gift all its own. A gift some lose far too early. Rather than to focus on the years that have passed, I’ll continue to live with purpose and appreciation. I’ll also continue to

Wake up calls By Dennis Siracusa Today I’m thinking about some uncomfortable words; Stubborn, Stiff Necked, Ignorant and Reckless are four and none of them are ones we should be proud to call “our own”. It took a heart attack to gain my attention. Up until March 5th this year I felt my life had enough exercise and a varied diet to responsibly navigate life. I thought I was doing OK too because I had never been a hospital customer since my tonsils came out at seven, and seldom had I experienced anything more than a common cold. Still, at 73 I started noticing changes but the heart attack came at me out of the blue and test results showing a 90-99% blockage in one artery was certainly a shock. How could this happen? I thought having a high metabolism gave me license to pile my dinner plate high. Oh I enjoyed a variety of foods, but I could tear into donuts, processed, and fried food; piles of it. My hospital stay and surgery gained my attention. Clearly I wasn’t navigating my life well and when I look at the physical condition of many I encounter, they aren’t doing well either. Decades ago I heard an interesting question: What would

I do different if the car I was driving then was the last one I’d get? I quickly thought up regular maintenance, washing and wax; using the best oil, gas and parts. Interest- Dennis Siracusa ingly, I never let the analogy wander over other areas of my life. Certainly we should direct our attention to our bodies because, for the most part, it’s the only one we’ll get. Why am I writing about this? I care about you and the stability of our American lives. Our world needs help and how can we be that help if we won’t even take care of ourselves? Should we care? Dionne Warwick performed a song in 1967 called Alfie. The lyrics: “What’s it all about Alfie, is it just for the moment we live? What’s it all about, when you sort it out, Alfie…” The bible tells us to seek wisdom intently and if we are a Christ follower, Jesus will direct our path. I’ve learned a few things the last few weeks. 1. We can’t trust government agencies to protect us. 2. Food manufacturers are either ignorant of good nutrition, or purposefully greedy in what they prepare for us. 3. Portion control will save us lots of money on diet fads, and the food pyramid has some good advice in its levels.

Crew member Taylor spins his first cotton candy in more than a year.
The Crew and Holy Angels staff outside of our businesses in Cherubs on the Green in downtown Belmont.
The Crew returns to Holy Angels businesses for them is critically important to our mission here at Holy Angels.” Due to health and safety concerns, Holy Angels closed its businesses in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While the businesses reopened a few months later, the decision was made to keep our crew members at their homes for their own safety. Despite not being able to
work, the crew kept busy in their own homes with their daily routines and program activities such as arts & crafts, music, recreation, exercise and other hobbies. All of the crew members were among the first people in North Carolina to receive the Covid-19 vaccination, along with other residents and staff, in January. Being fully vaccinated, and with Covid numbers decreasing,
it was time to bring the crew back. “Our crew members are really the face, heart and soul of our Holy Angels businesses. Whether it’s preparing food, cleaning tables or just interacting with customers, they are the true representatives of our mission,” said Moody. Holy Angels started preparing for the return of the crew members in Febru-
Police Department is today, what our priorities are, and where we hope to advance. We hope it starts an exchange of ideas and feedback between members of the Mount Holly Police Department and our community. We are grateful for the support given to us by our community, and I hope this shows our commitment to continuing a high level of service to them. I would also like to thank the mayor, city Council, and city manager for providing us with the tools and training we need to make sure we are well equipped to provide the level of service to our community they deserve.” The report kicks off with a chronological look at the MHPD, tracing its start back in 1907 and highlighting some of its milestones such as the first MHPD vehicle (1930), the establishment of 911 (1994), the first female Captain (Shannon Harris 2004), and the new department badge (2019). The report also features a chain of command and orga-
nizational chart outlining the different divisions and their roles. These include everything from clerical staff to SWAT and K9 teams. A statistical chart lists crime trends from 2015 to 2020. A pie chart shows how the department’s 2020 $3,750,037 budget is divvied up. But the report is more than facts and figures. It also shows the “heart” of the MHPD. Pages in the report touch on how deeply the department is involved in community activities and programs such as Coffee with a Cop, Meals on Wheels, National Night Out, Christmas for Seniors, Toys for Tots, and more. A special two page section in the report looks back at the life and legacy of Officer Tyler Herndon who was lost in action in December 2020. The headline “Officer Tyler Herndon, you will never be forgotten” sums up the profile of his service and memory to the department and everyone who knew him. Positive public rela-
tions are an important part of MHPD ops and the report shows the variety of ways that end is achieved through program such as Resources En Espanola, Safe Meet Up Spot, the PD’s website, Chat with the Chief, School Resource Officers, and social media. Training is high on the MHPD’s list of priorities. The report examines the variety of ways the department accomplishes this through deescalating training, cultural sensitivity classes, use of force training, and law enforcement driver training. The report also looks at how the MHPD has availed itself of grant monies which were used to improve technology, buy equipment, and even obtain a boat for river patrol. Overall, the MHPD 2020 Annual Report is a concise and comprehensive profile of a modern police department focusing on keeping its citizens safe and at the same time staying involved in a wide variety of community activities.
REPORT From Page 1
“We formed a committee of members from the MHPD to produce the annual report,” he said. “We vetted the document by having review sessions which had all the members of the department, other Mount Holly staff members, and select community members provide feedback. Mary Smith was also part of the committee that developed the annual report.” The report will also be posted on the MHPD website and Facebook page. The report goes right to the point with the PD’s mission statement and remarks from Chief Roper. “We wanted to give the community a snapshot of where we are as a police department, what our priorities are, and where we hope to advance,” Roper said. “This annual report is a snapshot of where the Mount Holly

They are not only prepared, but very eager to return. “I can’t wait to see some of my friends and favorite customers again,” said crew member, Cheryl. “It’s been a long year, but we’ve kept busy. I’m just so excited to get back there and see everyone.” Crew members will be wearing personal protective equipment, including masks and face shields, while in the businesses. While we encourage our customers to engage and interact with our crew, please maintain a safe distance, and no hugs at this
time (elbow bumps are great). Holy Angels continually aspires to provide competitive job opportunities to persons with all levels of abilities in an integrated work environment. North Carolina continues to lead the nation in the number of teachers (more than 23,000) who achieve certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The Tar Heel State accounts for nearly one-fifth of all teachers nationally who obtain the certification. Florida, Washington, South Carolina, and California round out the top five states for National Board Certification. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Gaston County Schools has not been able to recognize the teachers achieving National Board Certification during an inperson reception, which has been a tradition. The plan is to hold an in-person ceremony in spring 2022 to honor the outstanding educators earning their certification since the 2019-2020 year.

organizer and was created to foster the arts and arts education in Mt. Holly. For more information call Andress at 704-560-4463 or email at info@awakengallery.com
Gov. Cooper issues new COVID Executive Order Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. gave an update last Thursday on the state’s current data, trends and vaccination progress. As the state’s metrics and key indicators remain stable, Governor Cooper also signed an Executive Order outlining safety measures for the month of May. Executive Order No. 209 took effect April 30 and is set to expire June 1. As more North Carolinians get vaccinated and adhere to safety protocols over the course of the next month, the state anticipates lifting more restrictions on June 1. “While our numbers are mostly stable, we have more work to do to beat back this pandemic,” said Governor Cooper. “Let’s work hard in May and get as many people vaccinated as we can before summer gets here.” Under the new Executive Order, masks will still be required indoors but are no longer mandated outdoors. Masks are still strongly recommended outdoors by NC DHHS in crowded areas and higher risk settings where social distancing is difficult. Executive Order No. 209
will also increase mass gathering capacity limits. The number of people who may gather indoors will increase from 50 to 100 and the number of people who may gather outdoors will increase from 100 to 200. Occupancy limits currently in place will remain the same. “Fortunately, we now have enough vaccine for everyone. They are free and widely available across the state. In many places you don’t need appointment,” said Secretary Cohen. “For those who have questions, I encourage you to go to YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov to learn about the benefits of the vaccines, potential temporary reactions you might experience, and answers to common questions.” North Carolina continues to focus on distributing vaccines quickly and equitably. To date, the state has administered over 7 million doses. 48.7% percent of those 18 and up are at least partially vaccinated, and 39.2% percent of those 18 and up have been fully vaccinated. State health officials are continuing to monitor COVID-19 and its more contagious variants in North Carolina, which is why it is
important to continue to follow the state’s mask mandate and continue to practice safety precautions, including the Three Ws—wear a mask, wait 6 feet apart, and wash hands often. Dr. Cohen also provided an update on North Caro-
lina’s data and trends. Trajectory in COVIDLike Illness (CLI) Surveillance Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s syndromic surveillance trend for COVIDlike illness is level. Trajectory of Confirmed Cases Over 14 Days- North
Carolina’s trajectory of cases is level. Trajectory in Percent of Tests Returning Positive Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory in percent of tests returning positive is level. Trajectory in Hospitaliza-
tions Over 14 Days- North Carolina’s trajectory of hospitalizations is level. In addition to monitoring these metrics, the state continues to respond to virus spread in testing, tracing and prevention.
Schiele Museum open at 100% capacity The Schiele Museum, 1500 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, is now open at full capacity for visitors. “We are excited by this news” shared an exuberant Dr. Ann Tippitt, executive director. “The lifting of capacity restrictions relieves the burden of turning people away if they did not purchase tickets in advance.”One of the adjustments made since the museum’s reopening was to provide tickets online for people to purchase in advance. Museum experiences are available a-la-carte so that visitors can build their own adventure for when they visit! From Museum Exhibit tickets, Farm access, Planetarium tickets, to special programs, the visitor can choose what they’d like to do while they’re here. With the capac-
ity restriction lifted, they’ll now have all day to experience it all.” The museum still recommends purchasing tickets in advance via their website especially for programs that still have capacity restrictions. With the new executive order the museum’s James H. Lynn Planetarium is able to increase its capacity to 50%. Additional seats have already been released so that the Friday Night Lights programs in the planetarium reflect that increase. The Schiele Museum will continue to align with the guidelines in place per Governor Cooper’s Executive Orderssuch as the mask mandate for face covering the nose and mouth, social distancing, along with rigorous cleaning. The museum will
be open for visitors Saturdays from 10 AM –5 PM, Sundays from 1 –5 PM, and Monday – Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Belmont Abbey College announces completion of new residence hall The newest addition to the Belmont Abbey College campus, a 136-room residence hall has been completed. The largest capital investment in the college’s history, the new hall primarily serves upperclassmen but also adds new classrooms, offices, and meeting spaces. MKC Architects designed the new building to mirror the Gothic architecture prominent on the college’s campus. This historic accomplishment came about due to the college’s partnerships with University Housing Solutions “The new residence hall is so pretty! I like that there’s a kitchenette on each floor because it’s an easy way to be around friends,” said Lauren Carpenter resident of the new dorm, “The laundry rooms
on each floor are very convenient as well. It is one of the best spots on campus right by the cafeteria and close to all of the buildings for classes!” The structure is five stories, with the first story having meeting areas, social areas, offices, two classrooms, and a student lounge available to all students, including commuters. The upper floors alternate between a men’s and women’s floor. Each residence floor has a kitchenette, study areas, a laundry area, and a gathering area on each side. For security, the upper floors are only accessible via the elevator and the stairwell with the student’s magnetic ID that will permit them to their floor. The Belmont Abbey College Board of Trustees and
the Southern Benedictine Society approved the addition of a new residential facility in October 2018. The new dorms conceptual design phase completed in May 2019. In December 2020 the college received all permitting. After the design process, construction began in January 2020 and finished in January 2021. “The new residence hall answers a need we’ve had for several years,” said Tom MacAlester, Vice Provost & Dean of Student Life, “When students live on campus, they have a more enjoyable and more successful college career. We look forward to having greater capacity on our campus, and giving more students the ability to call Belmont Abbey College their home away from home.”

With all of this great sunny weather we have had lately, many people want to get out of the house and enjoy the season. As more things open up in our state, people will be gathering together and enjoying concerts, cookouts, and other outdoor activities. It will be great being together will friends and family again! We need each other, and each others company. In this life, every single person is blessed with all kinds of talents, gifts, and skills, we also have our limitations as well. We can do many things, yet we cannot do everything. We need people. Exodus 18:5-24 tells the story of a visit Moses received from his father-in-law. After Moses and Israel were delivered by God from Egyptian bondage, they made their way to the area of Sinai. While there, Moses’ father-inlaw Jethro came to visit, bringing Moses’ wife and sons back to him. While Jethro was visiting, he observed how Moses would sit from morning until evening judging the people and answering their disputes. Jethro told Moses that what he was doing was not sustainable, he would wear himself and the people out. Jethro suggested that Moses raise up faithful men to help, taking care of the day-to-day
decisions while Moses spoke to God, and taught God’s law to the people. Moses took this wise advice and allowed people Rev. Trent Rankin to help him. As Jethro pointed out, Moses had limitations. He could not lead Israel alone. Each of us have our limitations too, things we just cannot do alone. We need each other. We need people to walk along with us to help us, encourage us, and to keep us accountable. God has put people in our lives to walk alongside us. We may have limitations, yet working with others, drawing from their own skills and abilities, will help us overcome our limitations. Jesus understood the value of us being together. He called the disciples to walk with Him as He ministered. Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (ESV). When we are together helping, loving, and working in Jesus’ name, He is among us. We all have limitations. We need people to help us, especially as we seek to live for Jesus every day in a lost world. We may have limitations, yet we are limitless together. Gathered together in Jesus, we can change our world for Him.

The new hall welcomed its first residents at the beginning of the spring semester in January 2021. The annual cost for the new residence is $7,300 per year which is only about $70 more a month than St. Scholastica and St. Benedict Halls which were the last new halls built in 2013. Shiel Sexton, the general contractor generously donated $20 gift cards to Bearded Buffalo for the residents of the new dormitory. This serves as a thank you to the college and the residents of the new dormitory. For more information regarding the new halls, contact the college admissions office at admissions@bac. edu or by calling 1-888-2220110.
