Jesse Whaley’s Eagle Scout project is a great one By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Boy Scout Troop 56 member Jesse Whaley and his mother Lisa McLean sitting at the veterans memorial plaza he created at Belmont’s American Legion Post 144.

Over a year ago, Boy Scout Troop 56 member (and South Point Class of 2021 grad), Jesse Whaley of Belmont began casting his eyes around for a project to earn his Eagle Scout designation. By and by, his focus fell on the building and grounds at American Legion Post 144

near Davis Park. Whaley observed that the Auten-Stowe American Legion Post 144 building, which dates to around 1952, was starting to look a little tired and the landscaping, such as it was, a bit scruffy. Therefore, Whaley, 18, decided to pitch in and do some fixing up on the place. Whaley has been in scouting since first grade. His

troop is based at Belmont’s First United Methodist Church. “My dad was a scout when he was growing up,” Whaley said. “It’s a family tradition.” Whaley said he was also prompted to take on the Post 144 project because of a desire to honor veterans. See EAGLE SCOUT, Page 9

in new and expanded facilities in and around Gaston County over the next three years, CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont is scheduled to open in mid2023. “We are building more than a hospital, more than

a medical campus, we are building the future,” said Chris Peek, President and CEO of CaroMont Health. “In three short years, this will be the site of so much hope and promise – where new life is welcomed, where patients heal and where the next gen-

eration of healthcare professionals find their purpose.” Located off Interstate 85 in Gaston County, the 28acre medical campus will include a 66-bed hospital (54-acute care beds and 12 observation beds), 16-room See HOSPITAL, Page 6

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Faces (Hats off to loyal reader Roger Hudson for inspiring this column by sending me a pic of myself at age 17 as an 11th grader at Garinger High.) Seems like only moments ago that the local high school Classes of 2021 got diplomas. Most of the kids probably got a yearbook full of their smiling faces. Wonder where those yearbooks will be in 50 yearsand where the owners will be as well. As I stated in the preamble to this column, Roger Hudson sent me a clip of my own mug from the 1969 Garinger High yearbook (I was in 11th grade). I never had enough money to get a yearbook much less a class ring so it was shocking to see the pic. Roger also sent me a link to an online version of the yearbook page by page. So I googled it up and was basically floored by what I saw in those 200+ pages of “Snips and Cuts” as it was called. I looked at my classmates from the days of yore and the sight of their faces brought back a flood of memories. Some good and some bad. I decided to make a list of some of the ones I was friends with and then list one thing about them that still sticks in my mind. I also threw in a couple of teachers. So here we go. Steve Morgan - the Legendary Spider Monkey. Marty Edwards- A good friend of mine. Marty got drafted and went to Vietnam. He drove a 1957 Chevy Bel Air with mags and Cherry Bomb glass pack mufflers. He currently lives near Cherryville. Ricky Irby- He had a green 1956 Chevy with souped up motor. One day he went behind the school building where there was a driveway parking lot that faced open classroom windows (no A/C) and did a long and loud burnout much to everyone’s delight (except the principal). Charles Monteith- A good friend. We rode motorcycles together. Charles got killed on his. Carlos Gilstrap- Killed in car wreck. Allen Christensen- Nickname was “Sh*t on a Stick”. Katie Tarantino- The Eye-talian bombshell of Garinger. Lynn and Linda Hunter- Red headed twins that could allegedly chase and catch squirrels bare handed. Mike Stephens- A good friend. We got in fight in art room over magic markers. We got sent to principal’s office. He made us shake hands and go back to class. It was like nothing ever happened. We laughed about it later. Jackie Parker- Lived three houses down

from me on Delgany Drive. One of my sister Beth’s best friends. Jackie lives I think in Mint Hill. Ginger DavisLived on next street over. Supposedly ran Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor away to Las Vegas and became show girl. Her sister Judy was better looking IMHO. Grace Hall- My English teacher who took me out in hallway one day and said I should write stories for a living. Ms. Wilma King- My art teacher who gave me four straight Fs in Art. I was working 10pm to 3am on docks at UPS so getting up for 8am art class was a no-go. She told me she understood the situation and rather than turn me in for skipping gave me the Fs. I gladly accepted them. Ms. Philecta Rhinehart- Retired Navy. Told me I had the worst handwriting she had ever seen. Eddie Hodges- His mother was our science teacher. I think he still lives on family farm in Newell. Steve Benfield- A mischief maker. Got sent home for a couple of days for striking another lad in the groin with a yardstickfrom behind. Gene Brasington- Lived on same street as Ginger and Judy. Some of us went to his house the night that men supposedly landed on moon and we watched on TV. His parents were out of town. He found key to liquor cabinet. Astronauts not the only ones high that night. Patrick Walters- One of the founders of the Spongetones musical group. Wing Loo- Wing Loo was an AsianAmerica chap in our class. He would go to a XXX rated book store in North Charlotte and slip girlie mags in his book bag then sneak out figuring no one would suspect his innocent-looking self. Wow. I could go on and on. Seeing those faces from so long ago I was amazed at how young we were. In just a year or so, some of my classmates would be fighting in Vietnam. Just kids! Now, we are all collecting Social Security. Those of us who are still kicking! Do you have your high school yearbook? Get it out. Flip the pages. Let your mind wander back to those days when it seemed like you and your pals could conquer the world. Time flies.

I thought she loved me – she bought me jeans way too small By Tony Marciano I remember when I was a 42-inch waist. All the goodlooking slacks were sized 40 or less. I often committed the sin of jealousy wondering what it would be like having a 36-inch waist which is what I was when I got married (or a 32-inch waist in college). (Yes, I have a picture of me that size). A 42-inch waist had come and gone. The numbers had gone up. I’m embarrassed to say what they were but 42-inches was a distant size in the rear-view mirror of my waist. One year for Christmas, my wife purchased a pair of jeans that were significantly smaller than the size I was wearing. I will tell you, I was deeply hurt and offended. There was no way I could wear them that day or any day in the near future. As only my wife does, she looked at me and said, “Maybe you can fit into them in the future.” That was never going to happen. I hung them in the closet knowing I’d never squeeze into them. This past Christian season of Lent, I decided to get serious with my fasting. As a kid, I always gave up cookies, cake and ice cream. I was told you could break your fast on Sunday, thus giving you 40 days to fast with one day off per week. This year it was going to be different. Not only would I fast seven days per week, I would give up my weaknesses which are cookies, pasta, pizza, bread, cake, candy, and nuts. I told my doctor what I was doing, and she assured me the weight would just fall off. It didn’t. After the first week, the scale didn’t move. During the second week, the scale only moved if I exhaled. The third week, I saw some movement and then it

stopped. Week four was no joy. Eventually the scale moved, ever so slightly. As I got to Easter Sunday, I was seeing numbers on the scale I hadn’t seen in years. Something hit me. Why not try on those jeans that have been hanging in the closet for years? Would they fit? Would I have to inhale to get them on and then hope I could breathe? Was this a waste of time? Should I just donate them to the Mission and be done with it? I took them out of the closet and put them on. They fit. I didn’t have to inhale to get them on. They fit to the point that I could wear them while I was out with my wife. They didn’t look baggy like my other jeans. These actually fit. Not only that, but I looked good in them. Did my wife love me? Yes. Love is more than those warm fuzzy feelings we have when we first meet someone. One person defined love as,

“When y o u choose to be at your best Tony Marciano w h e n the other person is not at their best.” They go on to say, “Love is when what you want is never important. But what the other person needs and wants is always paramount.” Love is sacrificial. It gives. It doesn’t always get something in return. That’s a quid pro quo relationship. Instead, agape is a love that gives unconditionally. Conditional love says, “If you do X then I will do Y”. There is no “If…Then…” equations in unconditional love. It seeks the better for the other person, sometimes at great personal sacrifice. That’s why when people say marriage is 50/50, I respond it’s 100/100. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Page 6 In September 2020, CaroMont Health and Belmont Abbey College entered into a long-term partnership to allow CaroMont Health to build the new hospital and medical campus on land owned by the college and monastic community since the late 1800s. The proximity of CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont to the college campus will offer educational opportunities for students in Belmont Abbey College’s health science programs. “Belmont Abbey College exemplifies the true spirit of our community – one of progress, integrity, excellence and virtue – and shares many of our core values,” said Peek. “Much like healthcare, education has the unique ability to enrich and support not only the recipient, but all who surround them. A highly regarded institution like Belmont Abbey, focused on the advancement of others, strengthens our community. We are proud to be part of such a historic moment.” Dr. Bill Thierfelder, Presi-

Also planned is a medical office building and parking deck. Early estimates suggest the hospital alone could create as many as 150 new jobs in the region and see as many as 16,000 patients in the first year. “With the insight and guidance of medical and clinical leadership, CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont has been designed with an intense focus on the patient, both their care and their experience,” said Richard Blackburn, Vice President of Facilities and Support Services. “This medical campus, and the hospital that will anchor it, will extend our clinical network to better serve communities in the eastern part of Gaston County and continue to provide exceptional medical care to the region.”

dent of Belmont Abbey College, echoed praise for the partnership. “Bringing together two remarkable and storied institutions, the partnership between CaroMont Health, a leading healthcare provider, and Belmont Abbey College, a leading institution of higher education, is a game changer for the region and beyond. We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with CaroMont Health to provide the highest levels of medical care and academic excellence,” said Dr. Thierfelder. In May 2019, CaroMont Health announced plans to build the Belmont hospital, expand critical care services with construction of a fourfloor tower at the main hospital in Gastonia, and complete several renovation and expansion projects in its medical group. The more than $300 million commitment was the largest in the history of Gaston County. All projects are aimed at expanding CaroMont Health’s clinical network to prepare for anticipated population growth across the region.

I saw a quote on Instagram that said, “It’s sad how quickly people can forget about you until they want something from you.” I have experienced these words many times throughout my life. Have you experienced this reality? Yes, it can be painful and freeing. Recently, it has caused me to reflect on the meaning of true friendship and relationships. I realize some will see friendship as a convenience. You become a convenience when you can fit into their schedule. Some view friendships as their networking circle, which you can connect to further their agenda. And there is the sincere, committed friend. These are the friends where we share mutual respect and effort. There are other types we can add to the list. T.D. Jakes, the pastor of Potter House church in Dallas, Texas, talks about confidants, constituents, and comrades. He explains confidants are people who are with you whether you are up or down; they will love you unconditionally. Constituents are in your life not for you, but you share a similar cause. When they meet someone else who furthers their agenda, they will leave you for them. Comrades are against what you are against. They will team with you to fight against the same cause, but they will leave when the victory is accomplished. We cannot change people for our benefit. Even Jesus had those who walked away. “Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, ‘Does this offend you? Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again? The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

But some of you do not believe me.’ Then he said, ‘That is why I said that people can’t come Rev. Angela Pleasants to me unless the Father gives them to me.’ At this point many of his disciple turned away and deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, ‘Are you also going to leave?’” John 6:6166 NLT. We must decide how we will invest our energy and resources in relationships. Are we investing too much time, energy, and resources in relationships of convenience, networking, constituents, and comrades? Reflecting on relationships, I realize some are for a season, and we do what we can to make an impact for the kingdom. And, some relationships are consisting of mutual effort where we invest our energy, time, and resources. But I also realize even in these relationships; it is not for my benefit. “Epaphras, a member of your own fellowship and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings. He always prays earnestly for you, asking God to make you strong and perfect, fully confident that you are following the whole will of God.” Colossians 4:12 NLT. We cannot change people for our benefit. We pray that God will make them strong for God’s benefit. People will come and go from your life. If they can walk away from you, let them walk. They were only there for a season. As you invest in lasting sustaining relationships, do so for the glory of God.

EAGLE SCOUT From Page 1 “I wanted to give back to the veterans who defend our country,” Whaley said. Whaley started by replacing the Post flagpole. “I heard that Post 144 had a flag pole they needed put up so I got some friends and my father together and we did the job.” Whaley’s friends included fellow Troop 56 members Kevin Granson and brothers Grayer and Hayes Andrews. The flag pole was just the start of of what Whaley has done at Post 144. Over the past months, Whaley and a group of his fellow Scouts. Friends, and relatives, have constructed a stunning veterans memorial plaza on the Post 144 front lawn. The plaza includes a sidewalk, pentagon-shaped stone bench seating area, logos of the five branches of our military service, solar lighting, new U.S. and POW/MIAS flags for the pole, flower beds, mulch, and out front, metal silhouettes of a kneeling soldier and rifle with boots and helmet. The entire effect is amazing and has been getting plenty of notice. “People walk by and remark on how great it looks,”

said Whaley’s mom Lisa McLean. “It’s helped draw attention to the Legion and helped get new members.” In addition to the plaza, Whaley also did some landscaping such as planting flowers in a box right in front of the Post door and around the building. A huge range of folks and firms either donated materials for the plaza or gave discounts on the stuff. Contributors included Lowes, Mad Macks Industries in Dallas, Conder Flags, Plant Delight in Raleigh, A.J. Landscaping, Concrete South, and Site One. Troop 56 scoutmaster Michael Sass helped with the stone cutting and Whaley got lessons in welding on the silhouettes from Patrick McElhone. The work Whaley has done is greatly appreciated by Post 144 members. Commander Barry Smith had this to say. “It looks great,” he said. “It vastly improves the curb appeal of the Post and raises its image.” Another Post 144 member Dan Cloninger also praised Whaley. “He put his heart and soul into the project,” Cloninger

Whaley and fellow scouts digging the flagpole hole last fall.

Whaley at the plaza. said, “Every member of the Post enjoys seeing it.” Now that the project is done. Whaley will soon have his Eagle Scout board of review and should get the award in July. Meanwhile, he reflected on

the project and its meaning. “I want to thank everyone who donated their time and materials to see me through to the end,” he said. “It has been an enlightening experience.”

Today’s Daily Bread... nonprofit fills stomachs, hearts of students Today’s Daily Bread is a Christian-based non-profit organization born last year from founder Candace Nichols’ calling to “fill the stomachs and hearts” of students 18 and younger who otherwise might go hungry during the summer. More than 60 percent of Gaston County students qualify for free or reducedprice meals at school, but many lack access to meals during summer breaks. Candace, formerly a human resources executive, felt led to help meet this need and created Today’s Daily Bread, a mobile meal delivery service, which celebrated the start of its second summer with a Chamber ribbon-cutting ceremony re-

cently in the parking lot of Exodus Church in Belmont. Meals are provided by Gaston County Schools and delivered in a specially designed truck emblazoned with the TDB logo and that of several corporate sponsors, including McKenney Chevrolet Dealership, Biz on Wheels, Choice U.S.A. Beverage Inc. (Sundrop), Sunbelt Rentals, Don Mintz Builders, LLC., Advanced Copier Tech, Belmont Savings Bank, and Christmas Town Dentistry. The ministry is funded entirely through donations and sponsorships. A variety of corporate sponsorship levels are available. In its first year, TDB averaged delivering meals to

165 children each weekday. Rolling out for its second summer, Candace says there’s always a need at Today’s Daily Bread for these three essentials: prayers, volunteers and donations. For more information and to donate money, time or services, go to www.todaysdb.org. Students participating in Commissioners’ School of Excellence program It’s Commissioners’ School time for more than 100 rising sophomores and juniors in Gaston County Schools. This week (June 7-10), 60 students in the Class of 2024 (rising sophomores) are participating in the Commissioners’ School of Excellence, an annual summer enrichment program that dates back to 1986. Fifty-one rising juniors, who missed out on attending Commissioners’ School last year because of the pandemic, get their chance the week of June 1417. Traditionally, Commissioners’ School is a two-week residential experience that takes place on the Belmont Abbey College campus. Because of on-going concerns related to COVID-19, the program will be held at Ashbrook High School and last four days for each group of students. Students will spend four days developing leadership, communication, social collaboration, and workforce skills while participating in classes that involve problem-solving scenarios, presentations from community leaders, and exploring local businesses and potential career paths. “There will be contentspecific classes in the morning, and afternoon classes will be enriched with culture,

leadership, and problem-solving aspects,” said Commissioners’ School of Excellence coordinator Bridget Matzke. Additionally, students will be placed in small groups and visit various locations throughout Gaston County based on their interests. For example, some groups will visit CaroMont Health while others will visit the Gaston County Police Department and the FUSE District (pictured) in downtown Gastonia. Students are chosen for Commissioners’ School, which is sponsored by the Gaston County Commissioners and operated by Gaston County Schools, based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, self-motivation, and written expression. The number of students selected from each school is based on the school’s size. Below is a list of local students who will participate in this year’s James S. Forrester Commissioners’ School of Excellence: Stuart W. Cramer High School Michael Abby, Emilee Barker, Chandler Brown, Ava Cooper, Zoe Deo, Sarah Herzberg, Lyndie Humphrey, Annmarie Lawing, Madeline McKinley, Eliana Phadke, Mason Robinson, Ainsley VanderMeer, and Jacob Washam.

East Gaston High School Marya Beam, Trinity Brown, Parker Davis, Johnathan Green, Lillian Griffin, Kaitlyn Russell, Kiersten Sadler, Isabel Suarez, Jessica Tejada, Lydia Walls, and Madison Waugh. South Point High School Nicole Allen, Lauren Authors, Evan Black, Avery Boyd, Chandandeep Chahil, Shelden Clark, Gabryele Collins, Jordan Coffey, James Crawford, Lauren Downey, Jacob Echevarria, Henry Eisenhuth, George Keel, Ian McGinnis, Michelle Tracy, Alexander Villarreal, and Keira Wilcox.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Finish well By Dennis Siracusa Father’s Day is near and parenting and marriage are on my mind. There is a lot of confusion these days about Fatherhood, marriage, and God. You’d have to be dead though, not to know that a well-functioning dad plays a very important role in raising well balanced children. I was part of a ministry team at Nash Correctional Inst. up near Rocky Mount many years ago working inside that medium security prison for two days. I heard many stories of broken home backgrounds while the 600 inmates were children and the consequential broken homes because these men were now in prison with their children being raised in their absence. How does this happen? How does an epidemic of divorce happen? How does cascading dysfunction happen? It starts with definitions and foundations. Bev and I viewed our marriage as an unbreakable commitment. That’s how I viewed my parent’s marriage too. Today people equate marriage to an agreement, contract, proposal, arrangement with pre-nups and many unhooking escape hatches whenever one mate doesn’t want the other one anymore. Since when should marriages be built on such flimsy foundations? What about Covenant? When a marriage is formed truly before God, both husband and wife erase the word divorce from their dictionaries; they view themselves as relational problem solvers not escapees. Bev and I changed our marriage from a commitment to a covenant early on and both rest comfortably on that firm foundation. But that’s just the start isn’t it? Now the work starts. General Douglas MacArthur, before the 1950 battle with North Korea for Inchon, agonized over the tactics of his decision.

Once he had re-looked at it from all angles and weighed each component against the wisdom in the bible, he was able to go to sleep. He said “The bible possesses the power of Dennis Siracusa life. It gives us teaching for conviction, for restoration, and for education in righteousness.” The Apostle Paul reminded us of Jesus teaching to take responsibility for our choices, give our full effort to Jesus, and to fight the good fight; to finish well. 2 Timothy 4:7 In golfing book Seven Days in Utopia, Luke was asked what he wants his life to be remembered for. Did he want to be remembered as a PGA tournament champion or something more? We each need to ask ourselves the same question. In the Kendrick movie Courageous, the main character penned a family resolution that has jumped out of the movie into our mainstream lives. Men everywhere are recognizing the truth in it and they want truth, stability, and legacy for their lives; legacy that transcends occupational success or anything that interferes with their relationship with God or their family. So men, this Father’s Day, let’s follow Apostle Paul’s exhortation and the partial Courageous resolution below for our families: I will love them, protect them and serve them. I will be faithful to my wife, to love and to honor her. I will bless my children and teach them to love God. Let’s start now to finish well fathers and courageously work to bear full responsibility for the welfare of our families.

There is one thing we all have, that can greatly impact the direction of our life, and that is our pasts. Our pasts can affect our relationships, our decisions, and many other aspects of who we are and what we become. They can even affect our relationship with God. If we want to be what God has willed for our lives, it may be time for us to get past our pasts. In Genesis 45:1-13, we find Joseph revealing his identity to his brothers. Joseph was the favorite son of the twelve sons of Jacob. His brothers out of jealousy, sold Joseph into slavery. Joseph for a time was a slave in Egypt. Later Joseph was imprisoned for something he did not do. While in prison, with God’s help, he interpreted a dream for Pharoah’s cupbearer. Later when Pharoah had perplexing dreams, the cupbearer told him about Joseph. Joseph interpreted Pharoah’s dreams, telling him there would soon be seven years of plenty, and then seven years of famine. Pharoah promoted Joseph to a powerful place in Egypt, putting him in charge of preparing for the famine. As the famine began, Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain. While there, they encountered Joseph, but did not

recognize him. Joseph knew them, however. Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, telling them that God had blessed and prospered him in Egypt. Joseph could have Rev. Trent Rankin easily become lost in his past. He could have blamed God, complained, and let his past dominate his life, but he did not. Joseph took each struggle and grew from them. Many things happen in our pasts, some we cause, others are things we could not help. We experience many trials and struggles. We can become defined by these struggles, or like Joseph, grow from our troubles and overcome our pasts. We cannot change our pasts, but we can certainly grow from them. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph said to his brothers, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (ESV). Joseph knew that through his struggles, God had been with him the entire time, using his past to save many lives in Egypt. As we look back at our pasts, we need to make sure to see God’s hand at work. God walks with us even during our darkest moments, leading us to His will for our lives. Like Joseph, may we always look past our pasts, seeing what God has done for us, and realizing what He has planned for our futures.

How does your Kudzu grow? It’s that wonderful time of the year when my yard becomes inundated with a vine I call the devil plant. Many years ago I visited one of the big box stores in search of a product to rid this vine of its presence. Guess what? It hasn’t been invented yet. I was simply told “you can contain it, but you’ll never get rid of it”. Not what I wanted to hear. I know goats love it. Belmont has even utilized these animals to eat fields of kudzu away in years past…. and they do, quite efficiently and fast. Because my property is very elevated downward, this monster of a vine really doesn’t gleam its glory to passing traffic. However,

it’s a thorn in my side, especially this time of year. The only remedy that seems to help is cutting back the vines. Of course a few days later you would never believe I even bothered to contain it. On a positive note, some don’t look at this vine in the same way I do. I did some research a few days ago and learned that a friend’s aunt claims eating the weed keeps her young. She makes hats and Christmas trees out of it as well. I also learned it has been used in Chinese medicine for many years, as there are quite a few uses for it to help ailments and symptoms. Who knew? You can also find an array of recipes floating around online. From jelly

of 13.00 in the 100 meter dash. Our 3rd fastest middle school mark in team history. In the 1600, Henry Roberts posted a time of 5:33 which is a 7th grade team record and the GCS 3rd fastest middle school time ever. Nathan Eastburn and Carter Hoersch were also sub 6:00 with times of 5:52 and 5:58. The GCS boys 4x800 team (Carter, Nathan, Henry,

Jordan) posted a time of 10:32 which is a new MS school record. Carter Hoersch posted a time of 13:38 in the 3200 which is the GCS 2nd fastest 7th grade mark. In the high school meet: Connor Nanney ran times of 2:04 in the 800 and 4:44 in the 1600 while Madi Freeman placed 2nd in the shot put.

Kuhlman, Downing earn CoSIDA Academic All-America Honors

If you have your eyes on this summer’s Olympics, you might want to be on the lookout for Kyndal Knight. She is competing in the Olympic diving trials that are happening in Indianapolis. How awesome would it be to have an East Gaston High School graduate in Tokyo representing Team USA! While at East Gaston, Kyndal was a swimming and diving sensation, winning two regional titles and the 1A/2A state diving championship. She graduated in 2018 and went on to the University of Kentucky on a full-ride scholarship. Kyndal certainly knows what it takes to be a champion, and it is good to see that she is continuing to put forth a winning effort in everything she does!

Just before school let out, Gaston Christian School hosted NC runners elite meets for both middle school and high school. In the middle school meet: Olivia Van Pelt ran a 14.09 in the 100 meter dash and a 29.04 in the 200 meter dash, both marks are middle school team records. Cayden Brack ran a time

to quiche to tea. So it does have a place in the kitchen.. but not mine. Baskets can also be woven from this monster vine. Basket makers have perfected methods of either using the green vines or drying them before using them to make their handiwork. Our climate here in the Southeastern U.S. is perfect for kudzu. The vines can grow as much as a foot per day during summer months.. climbing trees, power poles, and possibly anything else in its reach. This I know is quite true. So once again I will find myself in a few more days tackling this creature. It loves my creek bed especially. Love it or hate it, it’s here and it’s not going away. I’ll just make sure to keep my windows closed to keep it out of my house.

On May 14, she graduated from the College with high honors, earning her Associate in Science degree, and she will start at NC State University in the fall. A native of Brazil, Pereira and her father, mother, and brother moved to the United States in November 2018, and settled in Mount Holly, North Carolina. Her extended family remains in Brazil. She started at Gaston College in August 2019, selecting the school for its variety of majors, the welcoming admission staff, and its proximity to her home.
