Patrick Craig named Mt. Holly Firefighter of the Year By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Lucky is the person whose job is their passion and lucky too is the place where they work to have them. That’s the scenario with Patrick Craig who was recently named Mt. Holly’s Firefighter of the Year. Craig, 36, knew from an early age that he wanted to be a firefighter. “My father had been a firefighter at Steele Creek

and as a child I heard him tell stories about helping folks,” Craig said. “That started my desire to be a firefighter.” Craig got his career started as a teen and it grew from there. “I began with Cooks VFD when I was 19-year-old,” he said. “Then I went to West Mecklenburg VFD. I also worked at Denver Fire Dept. and came to Mt. Holly in 2019.” Craig has undertaken ex-

tensive training at Gaston College and earned several certifications including- Firefighter I and II, EMT, Technical Rescue, Driver Operator Pump and Aerial, and Instructor I. According to Craig, there’s no one aspect of firefighting that’s his favoritethey all are. “I enjoy running calls,” he said. “But there’s a special brotherhood between See CRAIG, Page 4

Mt. Holly council approves FY 2022-2023 budget Information provided by Michelle Wood, City of Mt. Holly

The Mt. Holly city council approved the FY2022-2023 fiscal year budget at its June 13 meeting. Here are the budget’s highlights. Overall Budget Tax rate will remain the same at $0.485 per $100 of value. Water and sewer rate will enter into Year 4 and will be increased based on the City Council adopting the Five (5) Year Water / Sewer Rate Study during Fiscal Year (FY)

2019 – 2020. This new rate is reflected in the proposed Fee Schedule. The current proposed budget includes a COLA of 4% for employees. Longevity will be rolled into salaries after the 4% COLA increase and no longer budgeted in the future. Health Insurance will experience an 8.27% increase. Liability Insurance will decrease approximately $78,643, which includes General Liability, See BUDGET, Page 4

Her ability to sing opera and do it well resulted in Miss Gaston County Bailey Beam winning two talent-related awards at the recent Miss North Carolina competition. Beam, a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University with a degree in voice performance and sacred music, sang the “Queen of the Night” aria from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” for the talent portion of pageant, which was held June 23-25 at the High Point Theatre. Thirty contestants competed for the Miss North Carolina title with Miss Metrolina Karolyn Martin of Charlotte winning the crown. Beam topped the 14 other contestants in her competition group to win the most talented honor. She also earned the non-finalist talent award, which is given to the contestant with the highest talent score among the contestants not advancing to final round of the pageant. The two awards resulted in Beam taking home an additional $1,500 in scholarship money. “I got involved in the pageant with one goal in mind – to sing ‘Queen of the Night’ on the Miss North Carolina See PAGEANT, Page 10

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Incremental By Dennis Siracusa Someone sneezed and two people responded “bless you.” Germans chime in with “gesundheit” which means something vague like “health.” We all say things like that out of habit; a lot; without really meaning anything or even thinking about what we are saying. Italians do better. Dio vi benedica. God bless you! Now that has some meat to it. Social pressures have influenced us to carve God out of our lives, or make incrementally bad decisions because we are in a hurry, place trust on shaky ground, or are in love with shortcuts; incremental adjustments to trust, time, and conduct. New Bliss Gallery exhibit features first time Holy Angels’ resident artists Contemporary artist Anne Pell Harkness looks for a unique point of view and often finds some unexpected beauty in what many would consider ugly or ordinary. She brings her creativity to life in a new Bliss Gallery exhibit called, “Here & Where”. “Great art captures something unexpected. Its beauty strikes at our very core. The artist gives something of themselves to the artwork and that is what calls to people. Great art is more than just technical skill; it’s got to draw the viewer in, tell a story, or emote a feeling we want to keep experiencing,” said Harkness. Harkness is a lifelong art lover, with degrees from two arts colleges. It wasn’t until a bit later in life that she fell in love with oil painting. Harkness believes art saved her from a few failed career attempts and other low spots in her life. “In times of grief, we seek beauty to hold onto, as if it contains a little bit of the Divine. We want to hold on to the eternal, even if we don’t believe; we want to hold on to hope. Something in us grasps for that beauty as if it is life

Landon and Gaye Dimmick itself,” said Harkness. For the first time, three resident artists from the main campus of Holy Angels will be featured in this exhibit. Jack, Jakayla and Landon were able to create beautiful works of art with the assistance of Holy Angels staff using hand-over-hand technique. “It doesn’t matter your disability, art can always be an expression of the heart,” said Bliss Gallery Director Gaye Dimmick. “We try to connect the residents we serve with the community we live in. than others, but they still desire that connection. The arts do that. They may need help holding a paint brush, but the joy of sharing who they are with others makes all the difference.” Other Holy Angels’ resident artists at the exhibit are: Amy, Cheryl, Katie, Martha and Taylor. An opening reception was held Thursday, June 30 at Bliss Gallery. You can also learn more by visiting the Bliss Gallery web page at www.holyangelsnc.org/ bliss-gallery. Holy Angels established Bliss Gallery to offer persons who are differently able the opportunity to highlight their creativity and showcase their art alongside the works of guest artists. “Here & Where” runs from June 30-August 20 at Bliss Gallery. Holy Angels was founded in 1955 by the Sisters of Mercy. The private, nonprofit corporation located in Belmont, NC, provides residential services and innovative programs for children and adults with intellectual developmental disabilities with delicate medical conditions.

The other day I had a quarter, and as I was looking at it, I saw written on it, “In God we Trust.” We know this is our nation’s motto. It is on our money, car tags, courthouses, and many other things. This past week we celebrated July the 4th, our nation’s birthday. It marked the day we declared our independence from Great Britain and became a nation. As a nation, we are founded on the principles of God. We have trusted in Him. Is that still true today? When Josiah became king of Judah, the nation had fallen far from what it was. Judah was God’s people, with Jerusalem as its capital. God’s temple was built there. Judah was a powerful nation with mighty kings. They had defeated many stronger enemies. It was all because of God. Sadly, the people had turned from God, and fallen into idolatry. They had even allowed God’s temple to fall into disrepair. Josiah loved God and sought to restore his nation to God. He had the temple repaired. While doing the repairs, the book of the law of God was discovered. When Josiah heard its words, he tore his clothes in shame. He brought the people together in Jerusalem, and had God’s word read aloud. There he and the people made

a covenant, a promise, to turn back to God. Like Judah, we live in a mighty nation. We have been blessed by God in so many ways. By God’s Rev. Trent Rankin grace we have gone from thirteen colonies to the most powerful nation in the world. We have many resources and vast technology. However, it seems we have forgotten God in the midst of what we have. Judah was blessed, but had forgotten God and was lost in their own selves. We have forgotten Him as well. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in what we have and forget who provided such blessings. Josiah recognized his nation’s need for God, and worked to bring his people back to God. We proclaim our trust in God, but do we? God said to His people in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (ESV). God’s words to His people ring true to us today. Imagine our nation today, if our leaders, and we the people, would seek God humbly, and truly trust in Him.

stage,” said Beam. “I am very grateful that my performance was deemed worthy enough of a talent award. In addition to being able to perform at Miss North Carolina, I had the opportunity to meet young women from across the state who are some of the strongest, smartest, and most talented people I have ever met. I had so much fun getting to know them, and I walked away from the pageant with a new sense of empowerment. It was an amazing experience.” Beam was one of six young women who represented the Gaston County area in the state pageant. The other local contestants included: Miss Gastonia Sharidan Costner, who performed a tap dance to “Sugar, Sugar” for the talent competition. Costner is a graduate of Forestview High School and a student at Winston-Salem State University majoring in exercise science. Miss Mount Holly Andersen Raines, who presented a monologue titled “No Release” for the talent competition. Raines is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in marketing, hospitality, and tourism management. Miss Mount Holly’s Outstanding Teen Zoe Gambino, who performed “Fly Me to the Moon” on the clarinet for the talent competition. Gambino is a student at East Gaston High School. Miss Gastonia’s Outstanding Teen Lorelei Elberson, who conducted a speed painting demonstration for the talent competition to the song, “Who You Say I Am.” Miss Gaston County’s Outstanding Teen Morgan Wuest, who performed “Orange Blossom Special” on the viola for the talent competition. Local teacher is a runner-up Julia DeSerio, a former Miss Gastonia who competed this year as Miss Sandhills, was the second runner-up. She earned a $5,000 scholarship for her third-place finish in addition to other scholarships that were presented prior to the state competition. During her time vying for Miss North Carolina, DeSerio collected more than $21,000 in scholarship money. DeSerio is the chorus and piano teacher at Crest Middle School in Shelby. Prior to moving to Shelby, she did her student teaching in Gaston County Schools and taught music at Chapel Grove and Lingerfeldt elementary schools. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, DeSerio is the longest-serving Miss Gastonia with her reign beginning in November 2019 and ending in January 2022. The state pageant in 2020 was canceled, which postponed her chance of first competing in the Miss North Carolina pageant until 2021. She was a top 10 finalist last year as Miss Gastonia.

Director gets attention Gaston County’s contestants were not the only ones getting attention on the pageant stage. Delores Cox, longtime executive director of the Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association who is responsible for producing the Miss Gastonia, Miss Gaston County, and Miss Mount Holly pageants, received the Director of the Year award. The Gastonia/Gaston County/Mount Holly program is the only “triple crown” in the Miss North Carolina system that gives young women three chances to win by entering one pageant. The pageant also is the only local program to make available more than $218,000 in cash and in-kind scholarships available to contestants. Last year, in-kind scholarships were provided by Gaston College, Belmont Abbey College, Gardner-Webb University, and Paul Mitchell – The School in Gastonia. Cash scholarships were provided by Toyota of Gastonia, Hagans Real Estate in Kings Mountain, and the City of Mount Holly. Judge with local connection Parker Webb served as a judge for the Outstanding Teen portion of the competition. Although Webb is from the High Point area, he spent plenty of time in Cherryville visiting his grandparents and other family members. He sang previously with the Rick Webb Family group that is led by his parents, Rick and Phyllis. Now, he is half of the duet known as Guilford, sharing the microphone with his sister, Hannah, who served as Miss Gaston County in 2013. What’s next? Karolyn Martin, who won the Miss North Carolina crown, will tour the state promoting her community service that brings attention to the importance of nutrition, healthy living, and taking the focus off of physical appearance. She also will get ready to compete for the Miss America title in December. Kerrigan Brown of Spivey’s Corner, who won the title of Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen, will represent the state in Dallas, Texas at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in August. For Gaston’s six queens, they will continue making appearances and being involved in community service until they crown their successor later this year. Organizers will be meeting soon to plan for the 2023 Miss Gastonia/Miss Gaston County/Miss Mount Holly and Outstanding Teen competition, which will be held before Christmas although a date has not been set. Young women ages 13-26 are eligible to compete, and more information about entering will be posted on the Miss Gastonia website and Facebook page in September.

MALE YORKSHIRE TERRIER. J.R. is a very smart, curious, energetic boy! He loves splashing in his pool water before he jumps in! He enjoys the out doors, can do steps, now walks with harness and leash, has been on the grooming table. We are still working on potty training but he’s coming along. Due to the heat and his thick soft cotton fur, we shaved him down to help him stay cool for the summer. His handsome hair cut shows off his muscular physique. He is very stout like his daddy! JR has short legs and a teddy bear face. He is too energetic for older dogs but loves to run and play with the kids!
