Edited by Alan Hodge The 1913 Brill trolley in Belmont is in its final stages of restoration and recently got its coats of finish paint applied.Belmont Trolley Inc. vice president Nate Wells described the paint selection process and gave some other updates on the project. “The thinking behind the car colors was: we knew the two Charlotte cars were coming to Belmont and one of them already had the red and cream color scheme,” Wells said. We didn’t want to have two cars that had a similar appearance, given their age, and a similar paint scheme. We want to differentiate the two cars. Also, as it pertains to the choice of the colors, we want to something that had classic colors, like the antique red and cream, but had a local flavor. We narrowed down the choice between two color Belmont trolley project chugging along

Ultimately, most of the board was attracted to the red and cream of the Belmont branding and the thinking also went that the 1913 car did not historically run in Belmont, so it didn’t make See TROLLEY, Page 4

Volunteers from all walks of life have been coming together in Mt. Holly for several months working to make the new Veteran’s Healing Garden a reality. The project is a collaboration between the Mt. Holly Farmer’s Market and several other Mt. Holly groups. The garden is located downtown on Main St. on the Farmer’s Market site. The garden features a wide variety of plantingsespecially those favored by pollinators- ornamental grasses, and most importantly, a walkway of brick pavers engraved with the names of veterans. So far, the entrance to the garden and a set of steps leading from the street to the Farmer’s Market trellis has been completed. Many plantings have been installed including a large swath of Black-eyed Susan flowers. Engraved bricks in alphabetical order by surname have been installed in front and See GARDEN, Page 5

Ever since the Dawn of Time, and ever since human beings first sat on rocks and logs dressed in animule hides, males and females both badly needing a shower, shave, haircut, or a trip to a beauty parlor, and ever since we as homo sapiens struck poses like that thar piece of carving “The Thinker”, by the Frenchie Auguste Rodin, folks have asked the most important question in human existence. No, it ain’t “are we alone in the universe” or “is there a God”, or “what is the meaning of life”, no sir-ree-bob, the question is……. “hey, honey, what’s for dinner?”. Dinner, or if you prefer to call it..supper… is nowadays for most folks the main eat-a-thon of the day. But such was not always the case. Hearken if you will back to the days of yore when folks around here and elsewhere lived an agricultural sort of life. My mom Dorothy Jean Smith (multiple last names), and my aunt Emily Smith Helton, grew up on what was called by some folks the Smith Plantation in Catawba Heights and they both told me tales of how work on the farm began at the crack o dawn and after toiling several hours the Smith folks and whoever else might be working on the land that day would adjourn around noon-ish and head for the “big house” where “Grandma Smith” (Ela Eugenia Loftin Smith) would have luncheon grub heaped up on an old, handmade, farm table (I have it now and it’s over 100 years old), and everyone (including the deaf/mute African-American helper Jessie) would all sit down together in peace and hominy (after having washed their hands with water from the well), and dig into stuff like chicken fried in bacon grease, stewed bully beef, vegetables either fresh from the garden or out of mason jars depending on the season, cornpone or biscuits, or “lightbread”, and then after they had picked their teeth with Bowie knives (only kidding) would head back to their toils. But the question lingers then and now… what’s for supper? I saw the answer to that query first-hand not only at the farm but at the dwelling place of my great aunt and uncle Louise and Herbert Surratt in Jackson Hill.

myriads of daily decisions but do they ever really listen to our concerns? They’re supposed to. I get canned patronizing responses penned by staff aides. How are we to impact leaders like elected politicians, judges, or wealthy business owners? Writing letters and sharing opinions helps but first and better let’s recognize that God has allowed all authority to occupy its present position by His sovereign will. By our constitution, they are supposed to be responsible to us. Let’s pray those leaders will hear the righteous will of God and yield to it in all their decisions which will produce true peace. Then, let’s leave their choices to the Lord right or wrong. If they twist away from the Lord, He will hold them accountable.

A geography lesson- Jackson Hill is a post office address in the middle of nowhere on Highway …near the bigger hamlet of Denton in Davidson County. Uncle Herbert was the founder and owner of a factory there that made socks. The kind you wear on your feet- Surratt Hosiery. It’s still in business after 80+ years! Aunt Louise and Uncle Herbert are gone, but I bet their spirits hover there still. Anyway, for several summers back in the 1960s when I was a kid, I would go spend some time there. It was an interesting experience seeing socks made during the day and at night I would take a blanket and pillow and stretch out on the sofa in the “formal” living room with its pine paneled walls and it was deathly quiet and dark and the only sound was the metronomic workings of a big old clock. But back to the meal-deal. At both places, the farm and the tranquil abode of Uncle Herbert and Aunt Louise, the end of day feed bag brought- maybe a bowl of cereal and milk or a slice of …pie. My main recollection of the cold, leftover pie being a circle of Crisco saturated crust with a one-inch layer of mushy apple filling jammed within and tinged with cinnamon. I still have a soft spot in my heart for such a pie yet today. Yassah! Every time I pass the apple pie offerings at Food Lion I go back in my mind to Catawba Heights and Jackson Hill and the pies that would be waiting for the attack of a flatware knife in the kitchen during the late, late, afternoon. So. How do you deal with the immutable question of “what’s for dinner” at your residence? Does the microwave figure prominently in your answer at it does at our house? Does it mean a heavy meal that sits you bolt upright in bed with acid reflux at 2AM? Or does it hearken back to cold apple pie or Wheaties in a bowl with milk dribbling down yourBonchin?appetit. Much is happening these days; moving at lightning speed, evolving into difficult to imagine scenarios; a great deal troubling and peace interrupting! Contrast the scripture John 14:27. The Lord says, “I leave the gift of peace with you; My peace. Not the kind of fragile peace given by the world, but My perfect peace. Don’t yield to fear or be troubled by your hearts; instead be Fragilecourageous.”peaceis often someone’s flimsy opinion. God’s perfect peace is spiritual and Yieldtrue.means “to slow down and consider; to give preference or priority to.” As we search for a peaceful source we can depend on, 2 Thessalonians 3:16 points out the kind of peace we want and where to find it. “Now may the Lord of peace give you peace at all times in every way.” In John 16:33 the Lord says “I have said these things to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the Theworld.”world! When we listen to or read the news, the “world” blasts us and if we give preference to that information or perspective we will nearly always discover our minds troubled and twisted. In contrast Ephesians 2:14 teaches us that God is peace, and 1 Thessalonians 3:16 promises that our Father will grant us peace in all circumstances. That’s what we should desire over a fake peace that is no peace. Empty promises are sinister things we know are sketchy, oozing fear, robbing sleep, and leaving us contending with ulcers. “God’s truth empowers us.” God’s word always goes forth and accomplishes its powerful purpose. When we responsibly redirect how we choose to use our time, by immersing ourselves in the truth of God’s Word and by abiding in the security of His promises instead of worldly noise from our IPads or TV, we will find peace filling our souls and courage too. Staying in touch, generally, with what is happening around us is responsible. Reading headlines alone will accomplish that. Watching gas prices or food outages helps us plan and manage our finances. But we must be vigilant to not soak up the accompanying dialog because it is most often a “glass half full” dismal perspective that ersourevancehasizematerial-neverwillnorrel-tolife.Lead-make
Did you know that a fuel tax you pay at the pump is largely responsible for funding a well-functioning transportation system that gets you to where you need to go, delivers packages to your door, and keeps groceries on the shelves? But as vehicles go farther on less fuel and some stop using any fuel at all, it becomes harder to maintain our aging transportation system. The Eastern Transportation Coalition, a partnership of 17 states and Washington D.C., needs your help to explore an alternative approach, called a Mileage-Based User Fee (MBUF). A MileageBased User Fee means each driver pays for the miles they drive instead of the fuel they buy.To better understand how an MBUF program could work, the Coalition is conducting a Pilot Program in North Carolina and they want you to join and tell them what you think! From Page 1 sense to paint it with the traditional Piedmont and NorthernThelivery.”cart that will pull the trolley is also nearly ready for action.“The battery cart is mostly working,” said Wells. “We can read the internal computer of the battery to check its state of charge and other items like rated voltage and internal temperatures, etc. We can control the motor on the cart to make it propel itself and have even powered up the little red trolley and moved it along the short segment of tracks it’s sitting on in the public works facility. The battery cart is about 90% operational.”Justabitmore tweaking is needed on the cart system. “What we have left to do with the battery system is sync up communications between the onboard charger, that typically comes built into a Nissan leaf car, with the battery to deliver a charge to the battery,” Wells said. “The charging equipment that most cars plug into typically do not actually charge the battery. They deliver power to a battery charger built into the car to charge the battery. We can build our own charger, but we wouldn’t have a way to control its charge time and shut-off time without being able to communicate with the battery’s computer or physically being present to turn off power when it has reached its maximum state of charge. The use of the charger that is built into the car allows the battery and charger to communicate, monitor its state of charge (percentage of charge) and shut off the charging cycle when the battery is fully charged. That ensures that the battery will not get over-charged and potentially damage or destroy the battery. There is a little bit of reverse engineering that we will have to do to make all of this come together, but we are close to resolving the remaining outstanding issues. Once there complete, we can charge the battery with a home-charging system and control it remotely. This is a topic that would take up an entire article by itself, but that’s the best summary I can give.”Future work on the trolley project is being plotted. “After we get the charging system and all the other components of the cart working, we are inviting another group of students from UNCC to work on the cart for the coming school year,” Wells said. “We’d like to take all the technology we have incorporated into the cart and update it into a single touchscreen interface so it’s a little more intuitive for future Belmont Trolley personnel to use the equipment. Currently, we have to change various switches to control the cart’s functionality, connect to several Bluetooth and WiFi devices and their apps to monitor the battery, control the cart’s propulsion, and control the charging cycle for the cart and none of these items are related. We’d like for all this functionality to exist in one easy to use interface like a windows computer. Then, we’ll put a pretty, modern shell on the cart to protect all this fancy equipment.”

The Mount Holly Historical Society is collaborating with the Mount Holly Farmers Market on the Veterans Healing Garden now being built at the Farmers Market. Bricks for Mount Holly veterans are now being installed. More than 1,300 are anticipated. We have defined a Mount Holly veteran as someone who lived in the Mount Holly area at some point and was a veteran in a United States military branch. Because many of our veterans no longer have family members that live nearby, we decided to raise money to provide bricks for all Mount Holly veterans, rather than charging per brick. If anyone wants to make a contribution to our efforts, please send a donation to: Mount Holly Historical Society PO Box 12 Mount Holly, NC 28120 (Please indicate Brick project in the memo line) If you are or know of a Mount Holly veteran that should be included, please send the following to the address mentioned above. Please note that we may have to abbreviate some information due to limited space on the brick.

It is a place for all our veterans.”Agreat example of the dedication that volunteers have shown to the project took place last November when many of the plants that are thriving today were first put in the ground. “It was freezing cold and windy,” Brinkley said. “It was a memorable day.” Even though it’s a work (nearly done) in progress, Brinkley says the garden has already drawn attention. “On Saturdays people come and pull weeds,” she said. “Other people have been coming by to look for their family member’s brick.” The garden still has some work to be finished, but Brinkley says it could not have How brick from the Mt. Unfortunately, Cramer Mountain Country Club eventually closed its doors in 2010 during the Great Recession. Many stories and memories from the original Cramer Mountain Country Club are still reminisced about today. In 2014, Cramer Mountain Club was formed by a partnership between over 200 residents and DMD (Don and Mary Doctor) investments, creating a nonprofit, memberownedRebirthclub of the golf course brought new residential and commercial development back to the historical Cramer Mountain and the Town of Cramerton, continuing to build upon the rich the Legacy of Golf in Cramerton in 2022 and into the future.
GOLF From Page 1 from Kings Mountain won the high school division. Cramer Mountain’s lineage of golf course architecture literally traces back to Old Tom Morris, the Grand Old Man of Golf. The knowledge has been passed on through the decades, from Donald Ross to Frank Maples then to Ellis Maples and finally to Dan Maples, the mastermind architect of the Cramer Mountain to 2022. Golf played a very important role in Stuart W. Cramer’s life. He loved the game and believed in its recreational advantages as well as life lessons that the game teaches. Mr. Cramer was a member of Charlotte Country Club and a founding member of Linville Country Club. Cramer was also a friend of Bobby Jones and a member of Augusta National Golf Club. It is only natural that Mr. Cramer would want golf to be a part of the Model Mill Village he was creating in Cramerton. Cramer built two golf courses in the town. The first, built in 1922, was a nine-hole course that ran along the banks of the South Fork River from near where Cramerton Drug
Julie Heath opened with only 14 holes as it took several years before enough land could be acquired across Lakewood Road to complete the remaining four holes. Lakewood was located on the property where Stuart W. Cramer High sits today. The course was closed in 2004. Pine trees which lined the first fairway still stand between Old Lakewood and Lakewood Road. In 1984, Burlington Industries Inc. sold the mountain land and surrounding properties to visionary couple, Graham and Gayle Bell, who soon began construction of a championship golf course and country club which were surrounded by mountainside homes, just 15 miles west of Charlotte. The Cramer Mountain Country Club opened May 17, 1986. The fourth golf course in the Town of Cramerton opened September 10, 1986. Cramer Mountain Golf Course was designed in 1985 by the legendary Maples family; 184 acres of raw land was the canvas Dan Maples used to create his unique masterpiece. The Bell family, spending over $30 million dollars to build the course located between the peaks of Cramer and Berry Mountains, the topography allowed Maples to create literally a hidden gem. Maples and Bell created a course with multiple signature holes, flowing fairways, and with Duhart’s creeks dissecting the holes. The Cramer Mountain Country Club experienced high levels of success in the early years of operation, hosting multiple events such as John Boy and Billy’s annual outing amongst many other famous tournaments.

Genesis 33:1-10 records that as they prepared to meet, Jacob, not knowing what to expect, bowed to his brother. Esau ran to him, they embraced and wept over each other. A lifetime of disagreement and brokenness had finally been repaired. Jacob and Esau understood what it really meant to let go and let God. They had to overcome a lifetime of baggage to heal. Past hurts, hate, and a lack of forgiveness had to be recognized. For us, we must be accountable to ourselves and God. We have to see our pasts, our sins, and the things we have done. After we acknowledge where we are, we can begin to let go. Jacob and Esau had to let go. We must let go of the sin, the pain, the stress, whatever baggage we are carrying. We can let go by seeking God. God can heal brokenness, restore relationships, and bear our burdens. Seek Him first, and He will help us with the rest. Once we begin to let go through God, we can see great change in our lives. As Jacob and Esau wept together, years of past pain, deceptions, sins, and other barriers washed away. For the first time they looked past their pasts and problems, and they let God. As you carry whatever you are facing, whatever it is holding you back from God, seek Him. Let go of all that baggage in your life, and let God be Lord of your life. Then you will truly know the power of that one phrase, “Let go and let God!” Rev. The Gaston Christian School Varsity girls volleyball played in a scrimmage at Kings Mtn High School last week. The team played five schools in the public school system and finished with three wins and two ties. GCS phot Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org At one time or another, someone has probably told you, “Let go and let God!” We say this from time to time to help each other face difficult circumstances beyond our control. When we are stressed, experiencing a difficult relationship, or perhaps fears or trials, we often say to just let go, and let God work. It is an easy thing to say, but what can this statement mean if we really put it into practice? In the Bible one of the greatest rivalries was the relationship between the twin boys, Jacob, and Esau. These boys were at odds from the beginning. Jacob deceived his brother often, taking his birthright and their father’s blessing. Esau hated his brother and wanted to kill him. Eventually Jacob settled in his mother’s homeland, where he began his family. After twenty years, Jacob returned home. As he did, he reached out to his brother, whom he had not seen in years. Esau responded by coming to find his brother.

Wouldn’t we all like to have caring friends who were so sensitive and committed to us that they would sacrifice their hair for us if that’s what it took for us to feel affirmed, included and loved. Friends like that are hard to find in today’s When we become Christians, we are adopted into an extended family of love to support the church, the body of Christ. The Bible teaches us in 1st Corinthians 12 that when one member in the body hurts or experiences joy, the whole body shares in that pain or that joy. We suffer together and we rejoice together. That’s what it means to be the Church. We are a community of family and real Whenfriends.weact this way, we are doing for each other what Jesus Himself did for us. Jesus loves us so much that He did more than just shave His head. He went to the cross for us. He gave up his life so that we might live. In John 15:13 the Bible says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down his life for his friends.”

Continued focus on school safety Providing a safe learning environment for students and employees remains a priority for Gaston County Schools. The school district is proud of its strong partnership with the Gaston County Police Department, the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, and the city law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement in Gaston County has made a commitment to do everything possible to ensure that schools are secure and personnel are prepared should any type of emergency situation occur. Each school follows its comprehensive safety plan; as part of the plan, schools conduct evacuation, lockdown, fire, and tornado/ severe weather exercises periodically. All schools are assigned a police resource officer, which provides a direct link between the school and lawSchoolsenforcement.will continue the practice of random metal detection screenings for students and staff. Additionally, metal detection screenings and bag checks will be in place for athletic events and extracurricular activities such as high school football games. Spectators are discouraged from bringing bags to events – doing so slows down the entrance line because the bags have to be checked. It is important to remind the public that no weapons of any kind, including pocket knives, are allowed on school campuses, and the use of tobacco/vape products is prohibited.Hereare five more topics that deserve attention as students and teachers head back to class: Summer learning opportunities for students Learning did not stop over the summer just because students were out of school. Gaston County Schools hosted numerous enrichment camps and programs to support students and keep a focus on academics.Morethan 2,000 students in elementary school participated in the literacy and Lego STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) camps. Middle school students attended the Accelerated Gaston program that provided lessons and activities related to English/language arts, science, math, and career exploration. Middle schoolers also had the opportunity to attend Camp Captivate that provided hands-on activities related to STEAM. At the high school level, students were involved in academic preparation camps that offered activities in reading, math, science, art, physical education, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) as well as SAT/ACT preparationAdditionally, camps. students with special needs (disabilities in the areas of vision, hearing, occupational therapy, and cognitive learning) participated in activities such as swimming, field trips, and working in the aquaponics/ greenhouse program at Webb Street School. Students identified as academically and/ or intellectually gifted participated in Lego STEAM and Gifted Mind camps that enhanced their creativity and problem-solving skills. Even students who have not been to school before got in on the summer camp action. More than 50 pre-kindergarten students attended the “Kindergarten, Here We Come!” program to help with the transition from pre-kindergarten to kindergarten. Teachers were learning this summer, too Numerous professional development programs and opportunities were made available over the summer for teachers and other school employees. The training is designed to enhance an employee’s knowledge, skills, and expertise in a particular area or field so the teacher/ employee can continue to provide a quality learning experience for Elementarystudents.school principals and teachers started the state-mandated LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training, which will be conducted over the next two years. At the middle school level, administrators, teachers, and central level staff attended the PLC Institute in Charlotte that highlighted the importance of planning, teamwork, collaboration, and data analysis through the professional learning community (PLC) concept. For high school teachers involved in the district’s ninth grade camp, they were able to participate in professional development in the areas of math and reading. School counselors and other student services personnel participated in professional development that focused on strategies to support students’ well-being and their emotional and mental health.Additionally, Gaston County Schools conducted the annual Teaching and Learning Conference and Secretaries Conference to provide workshops and training, and the school district offered support for employees involved in two professional development programs that are a part of the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy: one program that prepares teacher assistants to become teachers and one program that prepares teachers to become school/central level administrators. New Chromebooks for student use Each student is issued a Chromebook computer for use at school and at home. Providing a computing device for students was done for the first time when the COVID19 pandemic began to support remote/virtual learning. This summer, more than 10,000 new Chromebooks were distributed to schools to replace outdated ones. Providing Chromebooks for students extends learning beyond the classroom and gives them access to academic/school resources anytime. School renovation and repair projects Thanks to the school bonds that were approved in 2018, various repair and renovation projects have been completed or are in progress at schools across the county. The projects include roofing, lighting, flooring, life safety, HVAC, parking lot, and other upgrades. Additionally, plans are under way to build a new school to replace Grier Middle School in Gastonia. The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place next spring.

Information about COVID-19 On June 24, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction sunset the “StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit,” which provided COVID-19 guidance for public schools. Now, schools are advised to reference the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Operational Guidance for K-12 Schools for information about how to lower the risk of COVID-19 in school settings.InGaston County, schools continue to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 while striving to operate normally. Schools will emphasize the importance of frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer, regular cleaning especially in classrooms and common areas, and continued use of air purification units. The wearing of a mask is optional; however, schools will have masks available for anyone wanting to wear one. If a student or employee is sick (exhibiting symptoms of fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea), the person is advised to stay at home and consult a healthcare professional. Traditionally, a student or employee who is sick may return to school/work 24 hours after he or she no longer exhibits symptoms of fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If a person tests positive or shows symptoms related to COVID-19, it is recommended that the person isolate at home for five days. The person may return to school/work after five days and is advised to wear a mask for five days once returning to school/work. Anytime a student is away from school because of illness, the parent should send a note to the school so the absence can be recorded as excused.

While we realize that COVID-19 is still a part of our day-to-day life, we are hopeful that this year will be as close to normal as possible. We also look forward to this year being a time when we can celebrate everything about our schools and take pride in all that our students and teachers will accomplish to make this year one of our best.”Here are five back-toschool highlights for students, parents, and school employees: The first day was Wednesday, August 17 The first day of school for students was Wednesday, August 17. In March, the Board of Education adopted the 2022-2023 school calendar with an earlier start date to allow students to complete mid-year exams prior to the winter break. The Board’s decision is in response to a school calendar survey that indicates approximately 70 percent of respondents (students, parents, employees, and others) favor a school calendar with the first semester ending in December and the second semester beginning in January. Additionally, an earlier start date is necessary to have a similar number of days in the semesters. The August 17 start date also means students will get out of school earlier. The last day of school is Wednesday, May 24, 2023, and high school graduation day is Friday, May 26, 2023. School schedule and bus transportation Schools will follow the start/end times that were in place last year. Elementary schools will operate from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Middle schools and high schools will operate from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Parents should check with their child’s school for the exact schedule as start/end times for some schools may vary. The start/end times coincide with the two-tier model used for bus transportation. The two-tier model makes it possible for bus drivers to complete two routes rather than just one in the morning and in the afternoon – a driver has an elementary route first and then a middle school or a high school route. The process is intended to get students to school and back home in a timely manner and ensure that there are enough busParentsdrivers. will receive information from their child’s school about bus routes, pickup and drop-off times, bus rules and expectations, etc. If a parent has a question or concern about bus transportation, the parent is encouraged to contact the school office and/or the passforstudents,ing)tendedisbus.tionforspeedtantternoonearlytrafficaboutMotoristsprincipal.areremindedthepossibilityofheavynearschoolsinthemorningandmid-af-hours.Itisimpor-formotoriststodecreaseinschoolzones,watchpedestrians,andusecau-whentheyseeaschoolWheneveraschoolbusstopped(withstopsignex-andredlightsflash-topickupordropoffmotoristsmuststopthebus–itisunlawfultoastoppedschoolbus.
