Even in the shed they find me and home in on my legs and arms and ears in a feeding frenzy. Blood sucking bar stewards! The other day I was trying to do some yard work and felt that old familiar skeeter bite and looked down and one had latched onto my leg with his teeth and so many of his pals were alighting alongside gnawer number one that mein gams resembled those fuzzy chaps cowboys wear.

For many years, I opened my closet to see nothing but a handful of items. A few shirts, maybe three pairs of pants, and two pairs of jeans. During the colder months, I switched over to a few sweatshirts, and of course, sweatpants. My idea of shopping was just grab whatever and deal with it. You know, run into one of the big box stores and end up with something lots of other folks would be wearing too. This was my idea of shopping local…that has changed now.

There’s a creek and low/ wet area on our estate and the skeeters set up camp there every summer. They hold high carnival and heavy masses of them execute a squadron scramble and take to the air whenever I go out the back door and try to run their gauntlet to my garage.

Stay hungry

After that episode I broke down and went to the store got some skeeter repellant spray. You know, the kind that makes you smell like a Christmas tree. So far it seems to be helping, but the aroma makes my eyes water and visions of Sanny Claus dance in my head.

Last year Frank made the transition from a moderately physical job to one that requires him to sit behind a computer. The change in his body was evident when he visited the doctor and realized that he a gained several pounds. To offset this extra weight Frank decided to start a dieting plan. Although he tried with different exercise routines before, this was his first time to intentionally watch what he ate. It should go without saying, but when he started the diet, the first thing that Frank noticed was how hungry he was. Before dieting, he simply ate when his stomach started to grumble. Now he was purposely having a dull hunger throughout the day.

Last summer, as most of you know… if you’ve been reading my writings here, I began a lifestyle (diet) change. I crossed that proverbial bridge several years ago when my body decided to hit rock bottom. Fast forward to now, my journey has been long, but well worth it. Going on a keto diet (lifestyle) plan has been rewarding indeed… which is where I’m leading up to on the subject matter here.

words show us that it’s good to intentionally have a spiritual hunger, creating a yearning for heaven. As dieting and staying hungry helps us appreciate a good meal, practicing spiritual prudence and cultivating a hunger for God allows us to look forward to the return of Jesus.

At the same time Frank was dieting, he was reading the Beatitudes in Luke. There Jesus calls the hungry blessed, not because of their present state, but because they will be filled. In a parallel passage in Matthew 5:6, Jesus says that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. Thus, it’s not just a hunger for food that Jesus is talking about. It’s a hunger for righteousness when He returns. When our souls get dissatisfied with this world and ache for eternity, it’s easy to reach for an “earthly snack” such as a new gadget, a TV show, or some other distraction. While there’s nothing evil in those things, Jesus’s

Finally, they decided to try a native trick (also popular with hawgs and elefunts) and cover themselves with mud as a type of earthy armor against the irritating insects but that only added to their already filthy appearance. Why people do such?Mankind has come up with numerous ways over the years to get rid of skeeters. When I was a little kid and we lived on a dirt road in Catawba Heights for a summer and a truck would come by every so often dispensing skeeter poison in the form of a large white cloud. This was exciting and I would run out and run back and forth in the cloud. Years

showed some of the semi-nudist contestants in a swamp. The skeeters were eating them alive. One damsel showed her posterior and it had so many skeeter bites on it that the fleshy expanse looked like the surface of the moon. Her gentleman partner swatted and cursed at the skeeters to such an extent that the majority of his exclamations needed “bleeping”.

later I learned it was probably DDT. My grandmother’s second husband named Ralph Huffstetler had a cabin named the “Snort and Growl” on a sandy road at Garden City beach and a skeeter truck would fog that area too. As you might guess, cavorting in that cloud was also on my list of fun. Maybe those fumes affected my brain in a negative or quirky manner. Many folks will probably agree including the one I live with.

There is a local consignment store I’ve been shopping at since last fall. Not only am I purchasing beautiful clothes (smaller sizes too), but I’m discovering awesome clothing, jewelry, and accessories

Daniel was confident in God. Being confident in God doesn’t mean we don’t fear. It doesn’t mean we never question, or are uncertain of what God is doing. It also doesn’t mean we expect God to rescue us from every trial or struggle. Being confident in God means we have peace knowing that God loves us and will never leave us. Such confidence allows us to enjoy life, not because everything is always good, but because the God we serve is good.Confidence in God is a result of our trust in Him. Daniel knew God from a young age, and he trusted Him regardless of the situation, even if that was lions! That kind of trust is also a result of our growing faith. Daniel had great faith that he developed over many years. Daniel had a deep relationship with God. If we are going to be confident in God, it begins with us letting God be Lord of our lives. Today, open your heart to Jesus. Believe in Him. Through your faith you will begin to trust in Him. You will find you are confident, not in you, but in God, knowing God loves you, and He will be with you always!

Have you ever met someone who is really confident? They carry themselves in such a way that it seems they can do any task. Being confident is a good thing, as long as it doesn’t become pride, or arrogance. Being confident is really important when it comes to our life with Jesus. Our confidence in God allows us to live each day knowing that we never walk alone.InDaniel 6:16-23, Daniel faced a great test of his faith. Daniel had been taken into captivity as a young boy in Judah by the Babylonians. He loved God and was always faithful to Him. God blessed him, and he became a great man in the Babylonian Empire, and later the Persian Empire. One day his enemies had a law passed banning anyone from worshipping any god except the king, under the penalty of death. Daniel, knowing this, continued to pray openly to God every day no matter the costs. The king liked Daniel and tried to save him, but he could not change the law, and Daniel was to be thrown into a den of lions. That night God sent His angel to protect Daniel from the lions. While we were playing at baseball in Dundee, a different little league story was playing out in Monterrey Mexico; a memorable one, one dealing with dreams and hope while challenged with abject poverty & discrimination. Monterrey Mexico put together their hard scrabble little league team with very little support, came to America on a 3 day visa overcoming incredible odds to finally win, 4-0, the Little League World Series played out in Philadelphia. But this is only a piece of the story and many watched it inFromwonder.photos I remember, the area this team came from was very poor and dust encrusted; propped up commercially by an iron smelting industry. Our counterparts in Monterrey didn’t live out of catalogs or hardware stores like we did, they made do with cast off items and their imagination; and that imagination stirred by far away dreams inspired while huddled around vacuum tube radios, somehow ignited hope in them even though their dreams seemed unreachable.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him Hope

After spending a large part of her career as an insurance agent, Rhodes knew she was meant to be a teacher, and she finally decided to embrace it. Coming in as a lateral entry teacher, she is excited to experience another year of helping students learn.

The Carolina Lithium project will be Piedmont Lithium’s fully integrated site and one of the world’s most sustainable lithium hydroxide operations. The project is currently in the development phase on a world-class mineral resource within the renowned Carolina-Tin Spodumene Belt. Proposed plans consist of a quarry, spodumene concentrator, and lithium hydroxide conversion

“I knew deep down that teaching was my calling,” she said. “Sometimes, I think we run from what we’re supposed to be doing, but I wanted the fulfillment of helping students learn new things every day. That’s what really drew me in.”

Well, I’ve already mentioned they won but here’s the thing. They pitched a perfect game; 18 up and 18 down; no runs, no hits, no errors!

“It’s been very busy getting started,” Rhodes agreed. “James and I have talked a bit about our experiences and shared what that has been like, which is a great thing to get to share with my son. Looking back on the first week of school, we agreed that we were tired, but it was the best kind of tired.”

“Whenever I get something challenging figured out, I think, ‘Oooh, I better call James and tell him the shortcut I found,” she said, laughing.Nowthat they both have the first couple of weeks of school under their belts, they’re settling into their new roles as Holbrook Lions easily.“This year has been even better than I imagined it would be,” Parham said. “The students bring so much personality to my classroom and new ideas to class discussions. “Production of lithium hydroxide will continue long after mining is complete at our Carolina Lithium site,” she said. “However, progressive reclamation will take place throughout the life of our mining operations. That means that as we work through the project, we will reclaim areas as we go to prepare the site for post-

The goal is to obtain necessary permits and approvals in 2023, commence construction in 2024, and begin production of spodumene concentrate and lithium hydroxide in 2026.Here’s what Piedmont Lithium senior communications manager Meridith Dugas said about the project.

The overriding answer may be elegantly simple. They hoped in the Lord and honored Him with every game. They prayed and asked God for wisdom, as in Jeremiah 33:3, they persevered encouraged by Hebrews 10:19, they believed the Lord loved them and would not abandon them as taught in Isaiah 41:17, and they believed God about Hope and a Future as in Jeremiah 29:11.

Today, more than 80% of the world’s lithium hydroxide is made in China. But Piedmont Lithium is poised to play an important role in providing a Made-in-America solution to our country’s reliance on foreign resources while supporting the electrification of transportation and energy storage as well as the clean energy economy.

“As soon as I got the call from Mr. Ross, the principal, asking me if I was ready to be a Holbrook Lion, I knew that my answer would be yes,” Parham said.

Rhodes said, agreeing with her son. As for those motherly instincts? They’re still going strong as she works across the same school campus as her oldest son.

The year was 1957 and I was a Dundee, Illinois ten year old little league co-pitcher. I say co-pitcher because David Zangy and I were both our local team pitchers, both threw fast balls side arm, and both were too small to pitch 6 innings so we shared each game 3 innings each. I suppose we were an average team because we always had other things on our minds; fishing for bullheads in the Fox River, swimming and orange popsicles while living in Middle America; life was good and we had no cares in the world.

“I went to law school then became a police officer,” he said. “Teaching was something that I had passing thoughts about, but I never really committed to it. Then, I served as a school resource officer, and I remember being so jealous of the teachers for what they got to do and seeing them interacting with students on a daily basis. I knew I wanted to do that,Preparingtoo.” for the first few weeks of school was an emotional time for James, who said he had an overwhelming moment when he realized he had finally ended up where he had wanted to be all along.

No balls ever made it into the outfield; 11 strikeouts and 7 infield plays. It had never happened before NOR has it since. How do we account for this? Was it a miracle; maybe, just maybe it was because it was planted in goodForsoil.starters, this team always started their games with a priest praying for them. Second, they had an angel for a pitcher. Yes, you read that right. Ángel Macías was the pitcher and could pitch right or left handed. What else was their formula for success? Was it hard work, a singular focus, a heartfelt love for the game and team spirit, a desire to make their families proud or to raise themselves above their daily grind? Or was it all of the above and more?

tion method— heavy timber frame with log infill— seen elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic Germanic settlement areas but not previously identified in North Carolina.

Hoyle, a miller from Adenbach, Germany, his wife, Catharine, and their children arrived in America on September 11, 1738 on the Robert and Alice, originally settling in northeast Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The family then lived for some time in Frederick, Maryland, but by 1753 had moved to what is now Gaston County, North Carolina, then part of Anson County.

The exact date of construction of the house is not known, but various sources place it anywhere from 1750 to 1758. After Peter’s and his eldest son Jacob’s deaths, which occurred within a year of each other, the land was inherited by Jacob’s minor son Martin, who then transferred his interest to his uncle John. In 1794 the property went to Peter Hoyle’s other grandson, Andrew, who became a farmer and entrepreneur. “Rich Andrew”, as he was known, may have acquired the property with the house already standing and then improved the dwelling, or he may have built the house and later upgraded it with new finishes in the early years of the 19th century.

This log building was moved to the Hoyle House site last summer. Its future use is still under

The site was purchased by Hoyle Historic Homestead Inc., in 1991 to preserve and restore this very important part of regional history. In 1993 it was placed on the National Historical Register.

The three room plan of the second floor consists of a large east room that comprises about two thirds of the space along with two small west rooms. The north-south paneled partition is similar to the partition of the first floor. This basic three room plan probably is original, although the partition has been moved at least twice. Notches on the baseboard and patching of the wall plasters and chair rail indicate the wall was moved east, into the larger space, by about three feet. All outer walls were exposed logs until they were plastered, probably early in the 19th century. A door in the northeast corner of the large east room leads to an enclosed attic staircase; in the stairwell the structural system is clearly evident because the corner post, down braces and log filling have never been sheathed.Thetwo remaining outbuildings date from the earlyto mid-19th century. The house faces south toward a now overgrown dirt road; the Dallas-Stanley Highway on the north side now provides access to the property.

Much of the modern sheetrock and painting have been removed to reveal early board ceilings and walnut paneled partitions and paneling on the outer walls. While some or all of the interior sheathing appears to date after 1810, all of the trim and some of the ceiling probably date to the first remodeling.

A gabled tin roof extends beyond the west end and acts as a porch sheltering the well. The well house stands at the southeast corner, and east of

In an unscripted instant in time not only was Trenton honoring his mother, but his teammates were also honoring her as Trentonwell.handled it all with class and dignity. He also turned in a fantastic performance leading the Warriors to a big 51-0 opening day win. These days Trenton never stops thinking about his mother. She is still, and always will be a big part of his life. When asked what he would say to his mom if they had a minute to talk Trenton takes the question in and thinks for a moment. Then with a gleam in his eye he responds.“Italk to her all the time,” He explained. “I would tell her I’m okay. I’m going to keep being okay, and I’m going to make sure that everyone that was here when she passed will be okay.”

For the 2021-2022 school year, Gaston County had half of its schools (25 of 51) to earn an A, B, or C grade –three schools received an A grade, nine schools received a B grade, and 13 schools received a C grade. The state did not assign grades for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years because of the pandemic. When compared to 2018-2019, Gaston County, like most school districts across the state, had more schools in 2021-2022 to receive a lower grade.

Academic growth indicates whether students achieve a year’s worth of academic progress for a year’s worth of instruction. Growth is reported in one of three ways: Exceeded Growth, Met Growth, or Did Not Meet Growth. For the 2021-2022 school year, Gaston County had 71 percent of its schools (36 of 51) to meet or exceed overall academic growth expectations.Atthe elementary school level, W.A. Bess, Brookside, Lowell, North Belmont, and Pinewood exceeded overall academic growth expectations. For middle schools, Cramerton and Southwest exceeded overall expectations. East Gaston, Forestview, Gaston Early College, Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences, Highland, and South Point exceeded overall expectations among high schools.

In reading, 26 elementary schools and all 11 middle schools met or exceeded academic growth expectations (95 percent of elementary and middle schools excelled in reading growth). In math, 23 elementary and middle schools met or exceeded expectations.

The elementary schools with the highest student proficiency are Hawks Nest, Belmont Central, Cherryville, New Hope, W.A. Bess, and North Belmont. Cherryville (+21.4) leads the elementary schools with the most significant increase in student proficiency when compared to last year. Other elementary schools with a significant increase are Catawba Heights (+11.4), North Belmont (+10.3), Tryon (+9.3), McAdenville (+8.7), Sherwood (+8.2), Belmont Central (+8.1), and Woodhill (+8.0). North Belmont is the only elementary school to exceed

The state uses the testing and accountability data to give school performance grades, which were assigned for the first time in 2014. A school’s performance letter grade is determined using a formula based only on two factors: student achievement/ test scores (80 percent) and student academic growth (20 percent).Theschool performance

The Belmont Abbey field hockey team wrapped up a season-opening stretch of three games in five days as the Crusaders faced Slippery Rock last Monday at Limestone.

Dr. Booker added, “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our teachers, support personnel, administrators, and so many others who have had a role in helping us bounce back from the pandemic. It has been difficult and overwhelming at times, but our employees have gone beyond the call of duty to persevere and do what is best to help our students. I am confident that our schools and central level departments will use this year’s test data to evaluate where we are, determine where we want to be, and put resources, programs, and professional development in place so we can take steps toward higher academic achievement and success.”

The Gaston County graduation rate for the Class of 2022 is 85.2 percent. Five schools have a graduation rate of 90 percent or higher: Gaston Early College (100 percent), Highland (100 percent), Forestview (92.9 percent), South Point (90.9 percent), and Ashbrook (90.0 percent). Forestview had the most significant increase (+3.7) when compared to last year.

its pre-pandemic (2018-2019) proficiency rate.

The(+4.3).high schools with the highest student proficiency are Highland, Gaston Early College, Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences, and South Point. The high schools with the most significant increase when compared to last year are Forestview (+8.7), South Point (+7.4), and East Gaston (+5.4). Bessemer City is the only high school to exceed its pre-pandemic (2018-2019) proficiency rate.

grade should not be interpreted as a comprehensive evaluation that determines the quality of a school. Only select criteria are used to determine the grade. School size, diverse student population, socioeconomics, teacher experience, student learning obstacles, special programs, parental and community involvement, and other factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have an effect on a school’s performance, but are not considered in the grade.

Students in Gaston County and across North Carolina improved their performance on end-of-grade and end-ofcourse state tests. Students in grades 3-8 are tested in reading and math, and a science test is given in the fifth and eighth grades. High school students take state tests in four subject areas: Math I, Math III, Biology, and English II. Proficiency is based on the number of students scoring a Level III, IV, or V on the state tests.Gaston’s overall proficiency rate for 2021-2022 is 48.4 percent, which is 4.3 points higher than last year’s rate of 44.1. The state rate is 51.4Thepercent.percentage of students scoring at or above grade level (achieving proficiency) in math and reading increased across all tested grade levels (grades 3-8) when compared to last year. The percentage for science (tested only in grades 5 and 8) increased as well. The most significant gains in reading are for fourth grade (+6.5), seventh grade (+5.7), and fifth grade (+5.1). The most significant gains in math are for third grade (+9.8), fourth grade (+6.8), and fifth grade (+5.5). The most significant gains in science are for fifth grade (+7.9).

The middle schools with the highest student proficiency are Cramerton, Belmont, Stanley, and Mount Holly. The middle schools with the most significant increase when compared to last year are York Chester (+7.2), Mount Holly (+5.0), and Stanley

Called the four-year cohort graduation rate, it reflects the percentage of students who entered the ninth grade in 2018-2019 and graduated four years later in June 2022. The four-year graduation rate is not the same as the dropout rate, which indicates the number of students who drop out of high school in a given year. When the state first calculated the four-year cohort graduation rate in 2005-2006, Gaston

County’s rate was a mere 68.1 percent.Itisimportant to note that Gaston’s current graduation rate of 85.2 percent is higher than the rate of 84.9 percent in 2018-2019, which was the last “normal” school year before the Somepandemic.students need an extra year of high school to complete graduation requirements. The district’s five-year cohort graduation rate is 87.8 percent. The five-year cohort graduation rate reflects the number of students who entered the ninth grade in 20172018 and graduated by June 2022.

Test results indicate a rebound in students’ academic performance

of achieving the next grade level: Beam Intermediate, Brookside, Cherryville High, Costner, New Hope, North Belmont, North Gaston, Pinewood, Robinson, Sherwood, South Point, and Woodhill. South Point High School is only three points from having an A school performance grade, a status that is difficult to achieve.Thetest scores released by the state are preliminary results. The results will be verified and official results will be a part of the district and school report cards, which will be issued this fall.

See the attached charts for information about student proficiency, academic growth, the graduation rate, and school performance grades. The charts include proficiency information for 2018-2019 (pre-pandemic) to illustrate the influence of the pandemic on academic achievement. Because of pandemic-related factors, it is not possible to have an apples-to-apples comparison of proficiency rates for 2018-2019 and 2021-2022.

after facing four shots in the first quarter. Freshman Kaylee Wenzel (pictured) scored her first career goal in the second quarter to put the Crusaders up 1-0 before halftime. Slippery Rock scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter to take a 2-1 lead. Belmont Abbey pulled even at 2-2 in the third thanks to the first goal of the season from Jessica Rybicki off an assist from Wenzel. Belmont Abbey finished with eight shots for the game and five on goal.

Student proficiency

At the high school level, the percentage of students scoring at or above grade level (achieving proficiency) increased in Math I (+8.0), Biology (+4.8), and Math III (+3.1) when compared to last year. Math III proficiency in 2021-2022 exceeds the prepandemic proficiency rate in 2018-2019. The proficiency rate for English II dipped only one-tenth of a point when compared to last year.

accountability and testing data was 2018-2019. While the state has acknowledged the detrimental effects of the pandemic on student learning and achievement, the state did not change its testing and accountability model to account for the Belowpandemic.isinformation about student proficiency, academic growth, the graduation rate, and school performance grades for Gaston County Schools for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Academic growth

It took overtime to decide the winner but it was Slippery Rock who came away with the 3-2 victory over the Crusaders.

Test results for the 20212022 academic year indicate that students in Gaston County and across North Carolina are gaining ground on learning loss that happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to information released by the North Carolina State Board of Education and N.C. Department of Public Instruction.Higher proficiency rates on end-of-grade and end-ofcourse state tests and meeting and exceeding academic growth expectations are signs that schools have been successful in addressing pandemic-related learning loss. However, schools statewide are faced with more work to do to overcome the effects of the pandemic and help students rebound to pre-pandemic achievement levels.

Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker stated, “It is encouraging to see our schools making gains in student achievement and academic growth; we are going in the right direction toward improvement following an unprecedented time that not only affected schools, but all aspects of our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic contributed significantly to learning loss as we had to alter almost everything associated with how we operated schools. Last year, we were able to get our students and teachers back into a more normal routine with in-person instruction five days a week, and as a result, we have upward trends in student achievement, especially with the amount of academic growth our students made in one school year. We know that it will be a gradual process to recover from the pandemic, and it will take much energy and effort, but we are committed to doing all that we can to ensure that our students learn, grow, and thrive.”

How It Happened- The Crusaders withstood some early pressure from Slippery Rock

Belmont Abbey is now 1-2 on the season while Slippery Rock is 1-1.

The 2021-2022 year is the first time that the state has applied all components of its accountability and testing program for schools, including the assessment of academic growth and the assignment of A-F school performance grades, since the pandemic hit. The last year that school districts had a full report of

• Take location into account. The ASPCA advises pet owners who live in regions prone to certain disasters to find rooms in their homes which can serve as safe havens during storms. Many storms do not require evacuations, but that does not

Pet owners must give extra thought to disaster preparedness to ensure their pets can make it through harsh storms unscathed. Natural disasters like storms and fires can put pets in jeopardy, so it’s vital that pet owners take the steps necessary to protect their furry friends before such disasters strike.

• Learn about local safe havens. If pet owners must evacuate in the case of a coming storm, their pets must evacuate as well. Some animal shelters provide emergency shelter for pets and/or can arrange for pets to be fostered until their owners can safely return home. It’s vital to conduct this research in advance, as the ASPCA notes that not all shelters can accommodate pets

• Stock up on emergency supplies. The ASPCA recommends pet owners plan as if they won’t be allowed to return home for several weeks, even if they suspect their time away will be much shorter. Speak with your vet about what to include in a pet first-aid kit, and be sure to bring at least several days’ worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food. Disposable litter trays, liquid dish soap and disinfectant and an extra collar or harness and extra leash are some additional emergency supplies to pack. A full list of recommended emergency supplies can be found at aspca.org.•Makesure pets wear collars and tags at all times. Disaster can strike at any time, so it’s vital that pets wear their identification tags and collars at all times. The ASPCA urges pet owners to include pets’ names and any urgent medical needs on the tags. A telephone number where owners can be reached at all hours of the day should be included on tags as well.

during storms or other emergencies. Knowing which ones do can ensure pets have a safe place to go should disaster strike.

The need to prepare for natural disasters is never more apparent than right after an especially harsh storm touches down. But disaster preparation should be a proactive endeavor, as taking action before a storm can make confronting the storm that much easier.

Disaster preparedness includes strategies to keep pets safe in the wake of storms or other potentially hazardous situations.
