B4L neighborhood celebration held in Belmont

The B4L (Boogatown 4 Life) group got together at Reid Park in Belmont last Saturday for some food, fun, and friendship. It was a celebration of tendofChadGastonBelmontmontReese,theandeventareawhommunity-African-AmericanBelmont’scom-manymembersofhavecalledtheReidhomeforgenerations.ThefirstannualB4Ltookplacelastyear,itwasabighit.Oneofeventorganizers,Stevenrecalledtheaction.“LastyearwehadBel-mayorCharlieMartin,policechief(nowCountysheriff-elect)Hawkins,andmemberslocallawenforcementat-andspeak,”saidReese.

“There were also food vendors, and a jump king. We also gave out ‘impact awards’ and one ICON Award.”

Reese went on to explain the reasoning and history of the event.“Inthe spring of 2021, Norman Craig brought to my attention how the neighborhood we grew up in was slowly fading away,” Reese said. “The people who made the most impact like the educators, athletes, clergy, etc., were dying off and no one was picking up what was once there. He and I decided that we wanted to celebrate who we are, and what we still had. We wanted to recognize our past, celebrate our present and prepare our youth for the future. We also wanted

to introduce those that just recently moved into our neighborhood and the history of what made it so special. We started with a Facebook page called BOOGATOWN 4 LIFE. The group currently has 276 members and is still growing. We use the page to announce events that were happening in the neighborhood and post pictures from our past and present.”

This year saw a nice crowd gather under the sun on Reid Park ball field. Like last year, mayor Martin and the Belmont PD were on hand to meet and greet. The aroma of frying fish and chicken wafted across the area. Music from loudspeakers added to the festive atmosphere.

New bridge planned for US74 over Catawba at Belmont

Most everyone puckers up when they drive across the ancient bridge that spans the Catawba River on US74 (Wilkinson Blvd.) at Belmont, especially if a big truck shares the roadway there. But relief is on the way.

But first- The current bridge has a long history. Two bronze plaques placed on its end show the “official” name- Sloans Ferry Bridge. After the Great Flood of 1916, another bridge that was near the current one’s

location was swept away. For a time following that catastrophe, a man named Sloan operated a ferry boat across the Catawba to and from Mecklenburg/Gaston counties. The bridge in place now was built around 1930. The other plaque dedicates the bridge to veterans of WWI from the two counties.

East Gaston High School students pass state exam for CNA certification

Summer is a time to travel, relax, and enjoy a few months away from school, but for four students in the Health Sciences Academy at East Gaston High School, it meant studying for the Certified Nurse Aide I exam.

And now, seniors Gracelynn Gaddy, Ashlyn Lewis, Emily Cerilli, and Taylor Wright can officially call themselves licensed CNAs. By the time the students complete their senior year in May, they will have received their CNA I certification and will be working toward taking the CNA II exam, giving them a head start on their desired career in the medical field.

The current bridge across the Catawba River near Belmont is slated for replacement with work beginning next July.

My dad loved to be the first in everything. We had the first color television in the family when everyone else had black and white TV’s. We were the first with an above ground pool. The larger family came over to swim every day. Our neighbors were curious and leaned over the hedges to watch us swim. Not to be deterred, my dad let the hedges grow to nine feet tall. The hedges were so tall, the neighbors were unable to watch us swim. We enjoyed the pool and all its privacy. But it came with a price.

We had nine foot hedges. They required a lot of work. Both my parents helped trim the hedges. The kids had to pick up the clippings. As the years went on, the trimming fell to my mother. I can remember her saying, “Don’t cut the cord. Keep the cord behind you. Be very, very

careful.” Even to this day, when I pull out the hedge trimmer, I can still hear my mother’s words about keeping the electric cord behind me so I wouldn’t cut the cord.

While I heard this as a regular part of growing up, my wife never heard it. For most of our marriage, I cut the hedges. I enjoyed trying to shape them, thinking I was working at Disneyworld where they shaped hedges to look like animals. I was grateful if I got square cuts with our hedges.

As this summer went on, we had a few weeks where we got a lot of rain. The hedges loved the water and started to grow. I’d come home and that boxy look I shaped in the spring was replaced by a look that was overgrown going in many different directions. I knew my schedule was tight. I asked my wife if she would trim them for me.

I came home one day and the front yard looked wonderful. The hedges had all been trimmed and the clippings had all been raked up. I was grateful.When I went into the garage, I noticed a note taped to the extension cord. It said, “Do not use – I cut the cord.” There was a spot, six inches from the end that the hedge trimmer and the cord had found one another. The trimmer cut the cord and the power went out. I was grateful my wife was ok.

The cord was plugged into a drop line from the garage ceiling. Both the drop cord and the garage door opener are plugged into the same outlet. The garage door worked fine. I was concerned as the circuit breaker should have tripped, shutting off the power. That didn’t happen. The power continued on. But when I plugged in the battery

charger into the drop cord, it didn’t work. It had no power. Then I Whereremembered.thedrop cord plugged into the ceiling was a little box. If you drew too much power or if you cut the extension cord, the breaker in the box “tripped” and shut off the power before it got to the circuit breaker box. I learned that the hard way when the welding machine drew too much power and tripped the little box.

I don’t understand how life works. I know that God is not an insurance policy to protect me from the bad in this world. But there have been too many times I was protected when the light turned green, I didn’t go forward, and a vehicle came racing through the red light.

When these moments happen to you, I encourage you to pause and thank God for his protection.

These are not just reminders of those people but of the countless emergency workers who died that day and those who died since then because of that day. These rails also represent the men and women who have served in the armed forces protecting our freedom because of that day. Family and friends remember Katie Sparrow Hedrick

Yellow balloons were released skyward at Evergreen Cemetery on September 5 in memory of Belmont’s Katie Sparrow who passed away one year ago at age 35 from cancer. Katie was the wife of Miles Hedrick and the mother of twin daughters Eliza and Olivia. She was the daughter of Allan and Marcia Sparrow. Local musician Dugi Bakalli sang the Coldplay song “Yellow” at the“Yellowevent. was one of Katies favorite songs and one of her favorite colors so the yellow balloon release after the song just seemed so appropriate,” Marcia said. “I can never thank all the people who helped

The Class of 1953 Belmont High School reunion took place August 27. Members celebrated by donating a bench to Stowe Park in memory and honor of the class. They ate lunch at Old Stone Steakhouse and reminisced old times. Peggy Bowen Jones and James Franklin also made it to join Catherine Burnette Dellinger and Elsie Horne Williamson. They hope to be able to meet again soon to keep up with each other. The class has unfortunately dwindled down to around 35 surviving classmates. The ones that didn’t make it this time were missed greatly. See with the bench are Elsie Horne Williamson, Belmont Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe, and Catherine Burnette Dellinger.

On Sept. 11, 2001, at 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the west wall of the Pentagon, killing 64 people aboard the plane and 125 people in the building.

Chaplain (Colonel) Henry Haynes remembers vividly the sequence of events on that heartbreaking and devastating day. He was serving as the Pentagon Chaplain. Chaplain Haynes will share his experiences with a focus on what it means to be an American from the context of 9-11.

Gaston County EMS partners with Gaston County Police to bring Fentanyl test strips to the community

Paramedics and EMTs continue to see an alarming rise in the number of opioid-related overdoses within Gaston County. As part of an effort to reduce opioid-related overdoses, Gaston County officers will complete harm reduction training and distribute these kits to community members as part of the collaboration. Each kit contains an educational handout on harm reduction

and prevention practices provided by Olive Branch Ministry and the necessary supplies

to conduct substance testing for Fentanyl. This is one of many ways EMS and police

are working to help combat the current opioid epidemic in Gaston County.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him Gen Z real hope

Have you noticed prolific nonsense everywhere? Can you sense hopelessness lurking? Do you feel soiled; empty? Are you looking for something real, honest, and meaningful but not finding it: anywhere?

A few days ago a $3,500/month legal billboard was noted saying “Life is too short, get a divorce.” This morning the internet reported an insightful story about someone ordering coffee with a staggering amount of sugar. So what? Can we really learn a foreign language in 2-3 days? Is an 89 year old burlesque queen undressing on AGT, entertainment? Oh, how about the new “mouse jiggling” app that allows a computer to appear “being used.” Is anything real; honest; of value?

In sharp contrast, listening to a church youth presentation podcast two weeks ago I was shocked! A young insightful Kimberley Copley, masterfully put her finger on several startling realities; ones we all should ponder and apply, especially if we care how our days and years fill with value or not.

Ms. Copley, for one valuable point, started with the first book in the bible; Genesis; and connected two facts most of us have not considered. “God made water teeming with nutrients before He made fish!” Can you anticipate the implications? “Before God created fish, He made the complete environment for fish to thrive in.” She then asked a valuable follow-up question: “Are you thriving; are you authentically living in the environment God made you to thrive in?” Wow! Here’s the point. If we microscopically consider the “theory of evolution” is real and accurate, then we can’t

answer the question. Life is reduced to selfproduction and kidding ourselves over and over and over. Buying lottery tickets fingers

justinsurmountablecrossed;odds;agame?No,it’snot an environment God designed for anyone to thrive in. Easy money always has terrible consequences. Choosing to ignore God, His wisdom and direction, dries our lives out and leaves us empty; REAL hope, truth, meaningfulness, and love sift like sand through our fingers.

Spiritual darkness exists. In John 10:10 the Lord characterizes the devil as the thief; “the thief comes ONLY (sic) to kill, steal and destroy.” And while Ephesians 6:12 identifies demonic forces of darkness as “powers, principalities, and world rulers of this present darkness,” we are also clearly taught that those are our primary enemies, NOT ONE ANOTHER and those forces begin by making suggestions to our minds; suggestions to do anything and all things contrary to what our Father God desires.

So, once again, are we thriving where we’re at? Are we choosing rightly? Are we seeking God first as the Lord directs in Matthew 6:33?

Are we using time wisely? Do we have a God inspired vision of His calling on our life and are we investing in eternity wisely? Is real hope within reach to us? To many Gen Z and Alpha young men, women and children the answer is becoming a resounding YES! And our hope, yours and mine, rests in a strong connection with Jesus Christ, too.

H.H. Beam Elementary teacher chosen to attend workshop and celebration

Teachers from across the country, including one from Gaston County Schools, were invited to “the happiest place on earth” for the Disney Imagination Campus 50 TeachersKathrynCelebration.Eisel,a teacher

at HH. Beam Elementary School, was recognized by the Walt Disney World Resort as an outstanding educator who is passionate about using the tool of imagination

in the classroom.

As part of Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary celebration, Disney invited 50 deserving teachers to Florida for a time of reflecting on the creativity and imagination of Walt Disney.

The one-of-a-kind teacher event took place over Memorial Day weekend.

Eisel was one of the teachers selected from more than 5,800 written applications.

Applicants had to share how creativity and imagination are demonstrated in their classrooms on a regular basis.

“I am a big Disney fan and found out about the contest through Facebook,” said

Eisel, who just completed her first year as a content teacher at H.H. Beam Elementary. “The application required teachers to submit an essay explaining the importance of imagination in the classroom and how they use it to inspire theirEiselstudents.”wrote about how she hosted an event inspired by the NFL Combine where students competed in events such as the broad jump, vertical jump, and the 40-yard dash.“I had my students analyze all the data collected and make graphs and charts to compare the information we collected,” said Eisel, who

is a big believer in making learning relatable to students. “Each student was drafted by their favorite NFL team and received a certificate.”

Over Memorial Day weekend, Eisel walked in a parade at Disney World with 49 other teachers as spectators cheered and thanked them for their work as educators.The teachers also took part in workshop activities such as designing their own theme park and listening to Disney executives speak about the importance of bringing imagination and creativity into the classroom to help students learn. Alton Fitzgerald spoke about the influence teachers have on students and strategies to keep educators motivated in the teaching profession.

Eisel and the other teachers also took part in some magical moments, such as learning a portion of the choreography from the song “Colder by the Minute,” which is performed in “Frozen” on Broadway, and getting selected to film a promotion on “Good Morning America” about the theme park’s newest ride attraction.

“One of the biggest things I learned while I was there was the importance of making lessons and activities creative and driven by real-world experiences,” said Eisel, who plans on bringing ideas she learned from other educators into the classrooms at H.H. Beam Elementary. “Students are much more likely to learn when they are allowed to think creatively and use their imagination to solve problems.”

For the Gaston Day School Class of 2023, August 17 was the Last First Day of Upper School. It also marked the last First day of School for headmaster Dr. Richard Rankin (center) who is retiring after 21 years of service, at the end of this school year.

For Taylor Wright, passing the CNA I exam meant she no longer had to use her younger siblings as patients.

“I would brush their teeth, feed them, and wash their feet,” said Wright, who wanted to be sure she knew how to do the skills evaluation portion of the exam. “My clinical skills test was performed in front of an evaluator, and I had to correctly perform the critical duties of each skill that I was demonstrating.”

Ashlyn Lewis, who plans to become a nurse, said the Health Sciences Academy has provided her with opportunities she would not have had otherwise.“Iamso thankful to be a part of the Health Sciences Academy at East Gaston High School,” she said. “Mrs. (Joyce) Floyd is a wonderful teacher and she fully prepared me for both the written and hands-on portions of the exam to become a registered CNA. “Mrs. Floyd taught our class lessons that we use in our everyday lives,” Wright said. “She taught us not only the skills to perform as a CNA, but professionalism, eye-to-eye contact, how to communicate with the patient, and proper bedside manner.”

Gaddy added that Mrs. Floyd took time to make sure the class learned everything that was required to pass the exam, and Lewis said she made the class fun through hands-on learning.

East Gaston outlasts Cherokee in 13-7 win

There are a few things that can bring a high school sports team together like a road trip. Road trips are a sports rite of passage. A chance for a team to bond.Last Friday the East Gaston Warriors football team took the bonding experience to the next level.

The team boarded a chartered bus and headed to The Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, for a non-conference game against the Cherokee Braves.Itwas a long three-hour drive by direct route, but the Warriors stopped off at the Golden Corral in Hendersonville for their customary pregame

Aftermeal.lunch, the team loaded back up, hit I-40 West and continued on to Cherokee. The players and staff loved the charter bus. It sure beat the standard school buses the team normally takes to games.

“Can we do this all the time?” sports trainer Lauren Koontz joked. “This is awesome.”Asthe EG bus rolled into the Cherokee area just after 5PM the realization of where they were sunk in. The team suffered a momentary delay when the bus had to stop to let a pair of elk cross the road about a mile from Cherokee Central

WhenSchooltheteam arrived at the stadium they unloaded and started to get ready. The atmosphere on campus was truly special. The school grounds are massive. The school system hosts grades K-12 all in one area. The community nature of the school makes the Friday night football games a big deal for everyone in Cherokee.Asthe Warriors took the field for warmups the team was greeted with an assortment of Native American themed music blaring over the stadium PA. The music included local pow wow songs and a beat pounding techno number called Electric Pow Wow from the Canadian First Nations group The Halluci Nation.The music set the tone. East Gaston was in the heart of Cherokee territory.

During warmups Cherokee head coach David Napert expressed how proud he was of his school and how happy he was that East Gaston had made the long trip.

“Anytime we get someone to come from far away it’s great,” coach Napert said. “This is one of the most beautiful schools I’ve ever worked in.”While this game is special it wasn’t the first time these two teams met. Last year Cherokee travelled to Mt Holly to play in an exciting 35-26 East Gaston win.

Before heading back to prep his team coach Napert shared his respect for War-

riors head coach JT Postell. Postell had coached in the mountains for years before coming to East Gaston and is still well thought of by all.

“My younger son Joe played for him,” Napert said of coach Postell. “He’s a great coach, but an even better person.”After pregame wrapped up the players took the field and the game got rolling.

The Warriors received the opening kickoff and on their first possession moved all the way down to the Cherokee one-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

pass from the East Gaston 30-yard line. The play was squashed when EG senior linebacker Christian Clark batted the pass down and the Warriors took over on downs.

Offensively the Warriors moved the ball some in the third but still struggled to take advantage of opportunities. The costliest was an East Gaston fumble recovery on the Cherokee 40 that went nowhere.Asthe game rolled into the fourth quarter tied up 7-7 both teams still had a shot to win.

The fourth opened up with Cherokee once again moving the ball, fumbling, and EG not being able to capitalize on it.

Midway through the fourth the Warrior offense finally put it all together. East Gaston started to move the ball when Trenton Sherrill connected on several screen passes that were complemented with effective run plays. This combo proved to be difficult for Cherokee to defend.

East Gaston’s most important drive of the game started on their 49-yard line with 3:13 left in the game. It ended with Nehemiah Stovall break-

ing off a brilliant 43-yard run to give EG a 13-7 lead.

Cherokee got the ball back with a little over two minutes to play. They immediately went to work with a quick passing attack.

East Gaston finally got the break of the game when Braves mucked a snap and the Warriors recovered the fumble on the Cherokee 47 with 1:30 left on the clock.

With the game on the line the Warriors played it safe and kept the ball on the ground. Back-to-back run plays netted only two yards and EG faced an important third and eight on the Cherokee 45.

With 1:22 on the clock the Warriors once again turned to Mr. Stovall for the big play.

The 5’8” inch senior didn’t disappoint as he took a Sherrill pitch around the right side and rumbled to the Cherokee 35 for a first down.

With a new set of downs, the Warriors were now firmly in the driver’s seat. There was nothing the Braves could do to stop the clock.

As the seconds ticked off the clock the East Gaston bench erupted in cheers. The

players were joined in the celebration by the 100 plus Warrior fans that had taken the trip to cheer them on.

This was a nail biter, but in the end the Warriors got it together enough to win.

Trenton Sherrill finished the game 14 for 24 for 225 yard and a TD.

Chase Johnson, Nehemiah Stovall and Ben Summey all contributed in the passing game.The Warrior defense was challenged in this one, but in the end, they held the line. Jayce Rowe was the top tackler with 11 stops, followed by Jake Fox with eight tackles. Ben Summey also recovered two fumbles to help the East Gaston defensive effort.

Top player honors for this game went to Nehemiah Stovall. Stovall ended the game with 250 yards of total offense. He ran for 162 yards and a score. He also hauled in five catches for 88 yards and a TD.

In his post-game comments Nehemiah Stovall showed that he is a team first guy. He said nothing about what he had done, instead he focused on what his team had done.“Overall, I’m really proud of our team,” Stovall said. “We had some trouble out there, some adversity out there, but we fought through it. We kept fighting and we didn’t quit till the end… I’m really proud of our guys.”

For East Gaston the bus ride home was quiet but fulfilling. The players headed home knowing that they got to play in a truly special game. This will be a road trip they will long remember.

This week the Warriors start their regular season at home against Cherryville.

You’ve probably heard someone say of people they meet sometimes, “They need Jesus!” People usually say that about a person that they consider bad, rude, or just not nice. The truth is, we all need Jesus. I can’t imagine facing life and all that we see every day without Jesus Christ. Jesus is the answer to what our hearts need.

Luke 8:43-48 tells the story of a woman who sought Jesus. She had a blood disease for twelve years. No matter what she did she could find no help. She spent all her money on doctors to no avail. She didn’t get better, she got worse. One day she knew Jesus was passing by. She decided to find Him. There was a big crowd, and it would be almost impossible to get to Jesus. She thought if she could just touch the hem of His robe, she would be healed. She reached out with all her might and touched His robe. As she did, she was immediately healed. Jesus turned to see who touched Him. She ran to Him, confessing what she had done, and how she had been healed. Jesus reminded her that it was her

faith that had caused her to be healed, and He sent her away in peace.

This woman desperately needed Jesus. She had tried everything. She had spent everything. She had to find Jesus. People spend their entire lives looking for fulfilment, hope, peace, and many other things to satisfy their hearts. Many people never find what they are looking for. We need Jesus. He is the answer. Nothing can do what Jesus can do for us. Only Jesus could heal this woman, and only Jesus can fill our hearts. Jesus is the only way to salvation. He is the one who restores us. It is Jesus that can give us peace to face life struggles, and hope in the midst of a hopeless world.

We need Jesus, but we must come to Him. Something pushed this woman to seek Jesus that day. We don’t have to go far. We need no long journey, or some set of rules. Like this woman, we must simply believe. Today, Jesus can save you. He can restore you. He can give your life fulfilment. We need Jesus. He knows our needs before we can even ask Him. So today, come to Jesus!

Construction is set to begin in July of 2023. The bridge is projected to be completed by summer of 2026.

The first stage will be the construction of four lanes on the new bridge. Then, when those lanes are done, traffic will be shifted to the new bridge and the existing bridge will be removed. During the second stage of the project, workers will widen the new bridge to six lanes, which will eventually allow for three lanes of traffic in each direction. There will be a raised median and a path on both sides of the bridge.

Even in the face of the new bridges, there are folks calling for another bridge to be built across the Catawba further downstream between the South Point Peninsula and Mecklenburg County. Belmont city council member Richard Turner had these thoughts on the bridge situation.

“We do need another crossing down South Point Road into Mecklenburg County,” Turner said. “The new replacement bridge over the Catawba at Hwy 74 is one of the projects we have been advocating for within the MPO along with the Catawba Crossings. I believe we have turned a corner with this bridge replacement. I look forward to continue to work towards funding and construction of other local and regional projects to get our residents from point A to point B in a timely manner.”

In other transportation news, North Carolina will receive $100 million in federal grant funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to make improvements along the vital corridor of Interstate 85 between Charlotte

The N.C. Department of Transportation will receive $100 million in Infrastructure Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant funding for its I-85 Funding Transportation Utilizing Resilient, Equitable Solutions project, U.S.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced Thursday. This is part of $1.5 billion awarded this round nationwide through the competitive grant program for highway, multimodal freight and rail projects under the 2021 Law. Over the next five years, approximately $ 8 billion will be provided nationwide for the INFRA program.

The grant will support the widening of

about 10 miles of I-85 in Gaston County from six to eight lanes – relieving traffic congestion on one of the Southeast’s busiest highways, as well as new connections for bicycles and pedestrians along that stretch. It will also enable the installation of broadband infrastructure and electric vehicle charging stations along the route in both Gaston and Cleveland counties.
