Belmont’s CJB Reid House celebrates 100 years By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

One of Belmont’s most historically significant structures has been hiding in plain sight at 301 Sacco St. for 100 years. The Professor Charles Jesse Bynum Reid House dates to 1920 and was his residence during his time as a professor and principal at Reid High School which was located right next door. The property where the school was is now occupied by a City of Belmont park. On September 20, Reid relatives, friends, and Reid community citizenry gathered at the house for a special program recognizing its significance not only to the local African-American neighborhood, but to the region as well. The event included music, remarks by keynote speakers, and prayer. A raffle was also held and the prize went to Gianni Rodriguez, a charter member of the Reid Junior Rams group. The Reid Junior Rams has about ten members at the current time.

Members range in age from five to eighteen years old. Charles Jesse Bynum Reid Foundation, Inc. president/CEO Charles Reid described the group’s mission. “We want to teach them the heritage and legacy of Reid High,” he said. “We want to inspire them to excel in whatever they want to do.” Tours of the house were also part of the day. According to Abriel Reid, the house looks pretty much like it did when Professor Reid and his brother Craig built it. “He was living in Lowell at the time and rode a bicycle here every day to work on it,” Abriel said. Inside, the house is a treasure trove of Reid family and school memorabilia including yearbooks, photos, awards, a letter from Barack Obama, and the original keys to the school. There’s also an original school desk. Upstairs, bedrooms are furnished in old time style and dedicated to civil See REID, Page 13

Brevard Station Museum traces the Stanley area heritage By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Looking for something interesting to do on a Saturday? Try the Brevard Station Museum in Stanley.

Wait. Why is it called Brevard Station Museum instead of Stanley Museum? That’s because Stanley was originally known as Brevard Station. In the town’s infancy back in the 1800s it was a

Annual Christmas Town 5K will look different in 2020 In just seven years the Christmas Town 5K has become one of Gaston County’s most popular holiday traditions. Well over 1,000 runners and their supporters usually come to McAdenville for one night in late November, however this year will need to look different. “With the current government restrictions on crowds and the news of a scaled-back light display in 2020, we had to come to the tough conclusion that our normal event was just not possible,” said Ashley Westmoreland, Event Coordi-

nator. Therefore, the 2020 Christmas Town 5K will be a virtual event. What does that mean? You register for the race as usual, but then agree to run/walk the 3.1 miles on your own, on any course you prefer and at any pace you desire. Each participant will receive a shirt, as well as a bib you can personalize and print at home to use on your run. If you prefer to run the traditional unlit course, mile See 5K, Page 4

railroad stop. During the Civil War, soldiers who signed up for the Confederate Army at the old courthouse in Dallas would march down the road to Brevard Station and board the train for the trip to boot camp in Raleigh. But that was then and this is now. The Brevard Station Museum is located right in the heart of downtown Stanley. It started around 1990 in the old railroad depot building on the other side of the tracks and moved to its current location at 112 S. Main several years ago. One of the museum’s most popular features is its extensive genealogical collection. The volumes include notebooks on local families such as Carpenter, Clemmer, Abernathy, and Forney. “We had some women come in and spend four hours looking at their family history,” said Pat Smith, the museum’s secretary. I always fall for fall Eary fall has got to be my favotite time of year in these parts. I had a dose of fall fever the other day. This inspiration went up my nostrils, hit my brain, and triggered a kaleidoscope of images. The incident began last Friday afternoon when my pal Calvin and I took our old British motorcycles on a ride in the country between Stanley and Lincolnton. There are some great roads in that area and the farmers have cut their hay and the big rolls of it are in the fields looking like gigantic Nabisco shredded wheat pieces and the other fields have corn stalk stubble and yellowing soybean leaves and the roadside grass is turning brown as well. By and by we came around a curve and someone had a little pile of leaves in the ditch in front of their house and it was smoldering and the smoke was wafting across the road and as we went through it the burning leaf smoke filled my helmet and all at once I recalled the time when all of us kids in the East Belmont neighborhood I lived for a brief spell as a street urchin would stand around a similar leaf pile watching the leaf-embers glow and getting our hair and clothes full of leaf smoke smell then when it was nearly dark we would break ranks and rush home to watch the Mickey Mouse Show on TV. Another recreation we had was playing in leaf piles. What fun to leap in the heaps and scattered the leaves everywhere. Sometimes the neighborhood cats and dogs would find the piles and that kinda ruined things. But once we got a bunch of toe sacks from my grandfather Sinclair Smith’s farm and filled them with leaves and built a big fort. Now, let’s talk about the fall of here and now. If anyone has plans to head to the mountains to see the autumn leaves, the time is nigh as they are peaking right now. If you can’t make

Alright, you geists and ghouls

it, don’t despair as the cold creeps down the hills and there will be plenty of great places around here, such as Kings Mountain and Crowders Mountain state parks, to satisfy the urge to see de- Alan Hodge ciduous trees do their Banner-News Editor thing. Another harbinger of autumn is the gathering by some of firewood to heat their homes. I am not crazy about the roar of chainsaws that accompany this endeavor, but the results, a nice big pile of split oak or hickory is a sight of beauty and must trigger some primitive feeling in humans of security in knowing that when the cold winds blow for real you won’t be left shivering even if your electricity or gas goes out due to a storm or is cut off due to lack of payment. Then we come to the home décor side of autumn. I don’t think many chaps are overly enthused about hanging small bundles of corncobs and dried flowers on string on front doors or bunching them up on a table to add ambience to a room, but every female I have ever encountered does it with much the same fervor as squirrels gather nuts and claw furiously at the ground to bury them for later gnawing. Finally, fall is a gateway to the holidays. If you don’t believe me, then go into any store and look at the Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff already for sale. It seems as if retail joints push and push stuff earlier and earlier and I predict that one day the month of June will arrive and folks will walk in stores to see Sanny Clause wearing a red and fur trimmed shorts and tank top ensemble with black flip flops on his feet. Remember, you read it here first.

Who is my neighbor? By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org

We live in a time when many people do not know their neighbors. Unless we live in close proximity to someone, we often do not know the people who live up and down the street from us. Apart from a friendly wave, we sadly pay little attention to our neighbors. Jesus said in Matthew 22:39, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (ESV). Who are our neighbors? Is it just the people we live near? This very question was asked of Jesus one day by a lawyer who was listening to Him teach. In response, Jesus gave the great Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus said a man was going down the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. As he went, he was attacked by robbers who beat him, took his belongings, and left him for dead. Luckily, a

priest came walking by, yet he did not stop. He walked by on the other side. Afterwards, a Levite walked by. He looked at the beaten man, but also walked by on the other side. After some time, a Samaritan passed by. The Samaritans and Jews hated one another, yet this Samaritan stopped and helped this Jewish man lying on the side of the road. He bound up his wounds and took him to a local inn. He left money with the innkeeper to provide for the man’s needs until he could return from his trip. Jesus asked the lawyer who was his neighbor, and the man said the one who showed mercy. Jesus told him to do likewise. Our neighbors are not just the people who live nearby, they are everyone. It is the people we meet, our coworkers, and even our family. It is the store clerk, the homeless, and even our enemies. All people are our neighbors! We meet so many people every day in some kind of distress.

Thursday, October 15, 2020

People h a v e physical needs such as illness, or financial Rev. Trent Tankin problems. People face emotional distress, such as fear and anxiety, especially in times like this. People certainly are in spiritual distress. Most people around us have no relationship with Jesus. We are to be the example of Jesus to our neighbors. So many people are broken, in distress, waiting for us to pass by. In our distress, Jesus stopped where we were, took us in His arms and saved us. Jesus is putting someone in our path today. Will we simply pass by, or will we stop and help them in the name of Jesus? Our neighbors need us.

By Shelton Fisher We’ve known it was coming for a long time. That special time of the year where the temperature drops everso slightly, the leaves begin the process of dying off and falling to their demise atop a pile in someone’s yard. The time of year where pumpkins are plentiful and carving sets are sold almost everywhere you can imagine. That’s right grab your masks whether you’re The Wolfman, Dracula, or a witch this year, it’s the time of the year where you can be anything you want to be! Halloween is at hand folks and it’s such a wonderful time of year! Halloween night was a unique experience in Riverbend in the late nineties. I can remember every Sunday leading up to Halloween, flipping through the paper for Party City’s catalog that contained a vast assortment of costumes. They had everything from clowns to zombies and everything in between! Just a few of my Party City picks from year to year included the likes of Hercules from the Disney movie, a Power Ranger, and a skeletal kid with a wig. Every year included my father carving a pumpkin before we went out trick-or-treating in Maw Maw’s (which driveway so that kids and preteens would know that Maw Maw was ready for them to come by for their annual candy stop. My father and I would bring a flashlight and go from house to house, one end of the village to the next and pillage for candy. Sometimes the neighbors would sit on their porch awaiting their visitors, and others would simply leave a bowl with a note that read “Just take a couple! You aren’t the only kid around here!” As the years went by and I grew up, I slowly became the only kid in the village who walked around with a pillow case while adorning that old skull mask with the wig, as we saved mine and my brothers’ masks and costumes from each year in case we could use them again. The jack-olanterns became scarce and I eventually stopped roaming in the darkest realms of the night. However, that didn’t mean my spooky days were over! The fun had just begun! If you have never met me

in person then you probably have only seen my headshot over there to the right of the column. It may surprise you to know that in person you would see most of the tattoos that run down my arms, featuring skulls and zombies on my fingers. Nothing terribly horrific, but I say that to emphasize that I love horror! If it’s paranormal, supernatural, extra-terrestrial, or sci-fi, you can count me in! As much as I love it now, I wasn’t always a fanatic growing up. Honestly, I wouldn’t even watch a scary movie until I was around twelve or thirteen and I will never forget it. My brother and his now wife had not been dating long and I had come over to their place to spend the night. Her brother my age had come over to spend the night as well. They had decided to pick out a movie to watch and it turned out that Freddy vs. Jason had just been released on DVD. Outnumbered three to one, it was time for me to face my fears as Jason Voorhees arose from Crystal Lake as his mother commanded and made his way to Elm Street. My brother never had a problem with these movies because he was ten years

o l d e r than me, but now watching this in a dark livShelton Fisher ing room, I couldn’t believe I had feared THAT this whole time. When it was over, like a kid who had taken his first bite of candy, I wanted more. I developed a collection of horror movies both old and new like The Exorcist, American Werewolf in London, Day of the Dead, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and many more. Sadly, over the course of the years I’ve lost some of my collection through moving, spring cleaning, and the sort but there is nothing quite like a good scare from time to time. So, there is talk of Halloween being cancelled or modified this year to fit the mold that COVID-19 has formed for us all, and yes we need to be responsible and safe. Keep in mind however that if Halloween is somehow cancelled, let’s not cancel that spirit and good time. After all, what’s life without a little spook in your step?

Gaston County receives more funds for tourism Gaston County Travel and Tourism announced recently that it has received additional funds to help boost tourism. The county was awarded a $10,000 grant from the EDPNC Tourism Recovery Committee through Visit NC. “With this NC Tourism Promotion Grant, we’ll ramp up our seasonal messaging to bolster visitation to Christmas Town USA, and other Gaston County holiday-related attractions, through a digital partnership with Conversant,” said Michael Applegate, director of Travel and Tourism. “The award goes a long way in helping our industry recover some of the losses suffered during the pandemic.” The North Carolina Travel Industry Association (NCTIA) and the Economic Development Partnership of

North Carolina (EDPNC) make up the committee and plan to meet to determine if Gaston County is eligible for more funding once the initial grant applications have been received. In September, the department received $100,000 to promote Gaston County’s tourism industry, as part of the Marketing Co-Op Credit Program. This program aids governmental entities that are authorized to collect an occupancy tax in the state through their Tourism Development Authority (TDA) organizations or destination marketing organizations (DMOs). The additional funding from the Tourism Recovery Committee was provided by the federal CARES Act. It will be used in accordance with its guidelines.

Conference Carolinas to open conference basketball schedule in January 2021 The Conference Carolinas Board of Directors unanimously agreed to officially start the conference basketball season in January of 2021. Belmont Abbey College is a Conference Carolinas member. The decision was made in the best interest of Conference Carolinas student-athletes, coaches and administrators due to the continued challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Conference Carolinas men’s and women’s basketball teams will officially return to campus for practice for the start of league play on Dec. 28, 2020. In addition, the conceptual

start date of conference play is to be no earlier than Jan. 13, 2021. The Conference Carolinas Directors of Athletics are scheduled to meet in the near future to continue working on designing an updated conference basketball schedule for the spring of 2021. All Conference Carolinas member institutions will have institutional discretion to compete in the fall 2020 semester against outside competition. Institutions also will have discretion on when to begin practices in the fall of 2020. “The health and safety of our student-athletes and our men’s and women’s basketball coaching staffs continues to

be our top priority,” Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “This decision, like all of our decisions over the last few months, was challenging, but we feel it is also the right decision to continue to give all of our member institutions the best chance to have a truly successful conference basketball campaign.” The 2021 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are scheduled to get underway with first round play on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. The quarterfinals (March 5), semifinals (March 6) and finals (March 7) will be held for the second straight year at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartan-

The conference will also continue to work with its member institutions and the NCAA to monitor the latest local, state and federal developments.

ute to French botanist Andre Michaux who prowled the Stanley area back in the early 1800s and discovered the Big Leaf Magnolia growing there. Stanley and its environs are one of the few places on earth where the species is found. Overall, the Brevard Station Museum is a fascinating place to visit and find out how Stanley grew from a sleepy railroad stop to the vibrant town it is today. For more information visit Brevardstation.com or call Barry Smith at 704-8135015 to arrange a Saturday tour.

rights leaders Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Frederick Douglas. A large poster also pays tribute to the Tuckaseegee Airmen, WWII pilots. Charles Reid recalled how the house and grounds looked when he was growing up. “I remember the chicken coop and a big cherry tree,” he said. “There was a fig tree too.” Charles says a cow was once a resident and an antique butter churn found under the house backs that legend up. The house today is kept in good repair and it’s obviously loved by everyone on Sacco St. and the surrounding neighborhood. Charles Reid stays there sometimes and keeps an eye on things. The lawn is tidy and the front porch has several inviting rocking chairs. It’s easy to imagine the days when Professor Reid might have sat on the porch and thought deep thoughts. The Charles Jesse Bynum Reid Foundation, Inc. is a 501C3 non-profit organization. Grants are going to be applied for to improve the house and make it more museum-like. For now, anyone interested in taking a tour of this fascinating and informative Reid community icon or taking part in the Junior Reid program can contact Charles Reid at 704-825-4017 and make arrangements. Online at www. cjbreidfoundation.org or www. facebook.com/cjbrfoundation.

About CJB Reid 18791940 He was a 1908 graduate of Knoxville College and the founding principal of the “colored school of Belmont” (later Reid High) in 1918. His wife, Maude Henderson Reid, was a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University and taught at several Gaston County schools. In addition to being an educator, Professor Reid was also a civic activist. His involvements included Gaston Schoolmasters Club, Gaston Welfare Board, Governor’s Interracial Commission, State Teachers’ Association, Trustee for the Gastonia Colored Hospital, Masonic member, he and his wife were among the co-founding members of Hood Memorial AME Zion Church in Belmont, and many more.
