Cramer Mtn. Ladies Golf Assoc. holds big fundraiser By Deborah Dunlap In October of 2017, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cramer Mountain Club Ladies’ Golf Association initiated an event that is dear to their hearts. That was the first year of their “Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer” event to benefit The Woman in Pink Boutique, a Gastonia wig boutique that provides free wigs and accessories to women facing breast cancer or other health issues. The LGA became aware of the wonderful work of two-time breast cancer survivor, Kim Beverly, along with family members, Paige Golding and Deborah Mull, when a member’s daughter, who was battling breast cancer, was provided not only a wig and accessories, but also the loving support of a woman who had faced the same journey.

Because so many LGA members had either experienced breast cancer or had a friend or family member who had, they were determined to support The Woman in Pink. With 100% of the profits going to the boutique, the golf event started small with a few hole sponsors, Ladies’ Golf Clinic, and members who played golf participating in the Closest to the Pin Challenge resulting in a check for $2,860. Gradually, more sponsors, In Honor/In Memory Hill, Raffle, and Putt-Putt Challenge were added. As a result, this year, on the 5th anniversary of the event, the LGA was excited to present a check for $19,058 to The Woman in Pink Boutique to continue their mission “to give hope and encouragement See GOLF, Page 4

Local teachers among those for program to develop next generation of leaders Fourteen teachers have been chosen for Gaston County Schools’ new partnership with Gardner-Webb University that will help develop the next generation of school leaders. Several are from the BannerNews area. The teachers will be involved in a 20-month program of study, completing 36 credit hours and obtaining

a master’s degree in school administration. They will progress through the coursework together as a cohort with a blend of online classes and in-person meetings. The classes focus on topics such as executive leadership, resource management, curriculum development, and See TEACHERS, Page 7

The Gaston County Museum on the historic square in beautiful downtown Dallas is one of our region’s most popular places for folks to get a look at area exhibits and artifacts going back literally hundreds of years. However, a faulty HVAC system in the Hoffman Hotel where the museum is located put a lot of those priceless treasures at risk of destruction by mold and when that fact was revealed, museum staff and volunteers pitched in to not only save and clean the goodies but to relocate about 25,000 of them to a new and better environment. Thus Sprach Zarathustra… or something like that

I was grateful for being able to lighten my load

Well… last week Sharon and I made a journey to the wilds of Cherokee, NC. Only the wildest thing was the number of people in the doodad stores. Almost. The weather going up yonder was rain in buckets Thursday and we saw several cars speeding past us on I-40 between Hickory and Black Mtn. only to end up hydroplaning and in the ditch. When we got to Cherokee it was rain off and on but nice and cool with that mountain coolness that envelopes everything including the doodad stores. On Friday morning we got up and had a takeout breakfast and then we headed out on Hwy. 441 towards Clingmans Dome. It was cloudy and dreary and early in the morning but anything was better than the …….doodad stores. Near Clingmans Dome the sky began to lighten. The sun was drying the gloom like a huge hairdo blow drier. We came to an overlook pull-off and the fog was lifting so we decided to get out and take a look. I was not prepared for what we saw. We walked down a little catwalk path and way below a sheer drop of a couple of thousand feet was the valley floor. The trees were dark green, almost black so green, except for some that were turning red and yellow and they looked like someone had thrown a handful of Trix cereal on a dark green blanket. The mist was climbing up the valley slopes in wispy waves. It looked like smoke. Sharon says her grandfather Charlie Millard Brendle (who was mountain born and bred) uses to say to her “Sharon, that’s why they call them the Smokey Mountains.” Good ol’ Pawpee. Anyway, way off in the distance you could see the main fog bank slowly lifting. The sun was like a huge light bulb behind it and the bank had a luminous golden glow. The bank rose up and up and up and with each minute more and more dark green and red and gold flecked mountains were revealed. Other people began pulling over and getting out and joining us on the catwalk path. The

On Saturday morning, I set my alarm for 6:12am but then fell back asleep after it went off. I woke up and looked at the clock. It was 6:14. I was exhausted, but I was on a mission that morning. I needed to be the first person in line to get the oil changed in my car. Fortunately, the shower woke me up. I loaded some boxes into my car that I was taking to the community shred event. I’d get my oil changed, go to the shred event and be home in record time. I arrived at the oil change shop at 7:17. I was first in line. The manager arrived a few minutes later. He unlocked the door, let himself in and relocked the door. It’s now 7:30 and I waited outside the shop. Over the next 30 minutes, car after car arrived to be serviced. Seven people lined up behind me. This was going to be a busy day. At 8:00, the manager unlocked the door. I explained I needed the oil changed, tires rotated, and the air cleaner replaced. I commented that since I was first in line, I would be out by 8:30am. I had to be at the shred event which started at 9:00am. He informed me there were two cars from the night before ahead of me and he had only one mechanic doing oil changes. I asked if it would be done by 9:15. He said no. How about 9:30? “I’ll try,” he said. I went for coffee and

the oil change shop. I found it and went Tony Marciano through the cones that were set up. When I got to the point where the shred event was taking place, three men unloaded the boxes from my trunk. I thanked them and drove off. As I left the shred event, I thought the car felt lighter. It was as if the rear tires were not on the ground. I knew none of that was true. What happened? I got rid of some baggage that had been hanging around the house way too long. Not only was my car lighter, but my heart felt lighter as well. I encourage you to get rid of some of the things you are carrying and unload the baggage that is burdening your heart. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend. Rev. breakfast and came back an hour later. The car was still inside the shop. The oil had been changed and the tires rotated, but there it sat. The air cleaner had not arrived. In fact, it didn’t arrive by 9:30. I spoke to the manager. He was frustrated that it had not come in yet. The shred event was from 9-11am. I checked my phone, and it was a two-minute drive away. If the car was done at 10:00am, I’d have plenty of time. 9:45 came as did 10:00. The car still sat in the bay. At 10:10, it rolled out. It was finally finished. I got in my car and headed to my next destination. But when I arrived, there was no shred event at that address. In fact, it was a Sonic drivethrough. I turned around and went in the other direction. I stopped at a church and then a fire house. Still, no shred event. I double checked the address I had plugged into my phone. It was correct but there was no event at any of those locations. By now, it’s 10:30. Would I miss this year’s shred event? I googled it and found an event from a few years ago. It said it was behind the Arby’s. Ironically, that was a few hundred yards from

fog bank looked like a curtain rising on a stage of gargantuan proportions. The curtain rose and rose and then you could see rising and rising dark Alan Hodge mountains as far as Banner-News Editor the horizon. On top of the mysterious mountains was a huge bank of fluffy snow white clouds like whipped cream and on top of that the sun blazed like in an azure sky with all its early morning glory. We all stood there with mouths hanging open in reverence and awe. I thought of the opening minutes of that tone poem by Richard Strauss “Thus Sprach Zarathustra”. A swarthy Middle Eastern man walked on the cat path and stood beside me. I turned and looked at him. “That’s amazing,” I said pointing to the scene. He looked at me.. our eyes met for a few seconds of universal understanding. “It is the work of God,” he said in a thick accent. Hey maybe my Gaston County accent sounded thick to him. Soon, we all got back in our vehicles and left. Later that day, watching the TV news in our hotel room, I thought about how all of our political and social and economic squabbles and finger pointing and finger shooting are nothing but farts in whirlwinds. All of our ego trips and self-important projects and deadlines and grades and likes and dislikes and hates and much more really amount to nothing compared to what our little impromptu international and wholly by accident gathering had seen for a few minutes on a mountain roadside. I wish everyone could have seen the stunning beauty and majesty we saw that morning. It was humbling to say the very least- or as a crab fisherman once said of having been caught in 30 foot waves on the Bering Sea in winter- “People who think there isn’t a higher power need to come out here for a while.” Thus Sprach Alan.

Let go of anger Proverbs 12:16 A fool’s displeasure is known at once, but whoever ignores an insult is sensible. The vast majority of our anger is not righteous but self-righteous. Our ego has been injured in some way, and we want to get even. Our verse from Proverbs says that an immediate reaction to an insult is foolish. So many silly arguments could be avoided if we could let go of some things. I once heard someone say that when he receives an insult, he just puts it in his left pocket, which happens to have a hole in it, and then he keeps on going. He tries to imagine the best about the other person. Maybe the guy is having a bad day or

something is going on in his life that’s causing him to say things he normally wouldn’t. Basically, he tries to give the other person some grace. Choosing to overlook an offense in this way is the right thing to do. It stops an argument in its tracks and eliminates ill feelings before they take over. The only way we will be able to ignore an insult is if we have learned to find our worth and identity in Christ. When we’re secure in His opinion of us we’re not so worried about the opinions of others. Of course, criticism and insults can still hurt, but they don’t have to devastate us, and we don’t have to react

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Influence and improbable By Dennis Siracusa “What’s life all about;” what impact is my life making on our world?” These questions occur to lots of us often. Most of us want our lives to count for something of value but our answer to our question may steer us quite different directions; revisiting that question let’s look at the two most likely but seemingly improbable answers. 1.The Christian God named “I Am” is god alone, everlasting and eternal, and created all we see about 10,000 years ago because He is sovereign, infinitely powerful, and wanted to; OR 2. God doesn’t exist and everything we see on earth and in our universe simply happened by accident. Both seem utterly fantastic don’t they? The concept of an eternal, infinite Creator God seems impossible to grasp. The same is largely true for evolution because when we deeply investigate the complexity of life around us, what we see is mathematically impossible regardless of how many billions of years we want to subscribe to it. Eminent scientist, Werner Von Braun, noted that it is impossible for the human brain and even one other organ e.g. (an eye, heart, kidney, or lungs) to mathematically have evolved together. So where does that leave us? God has given us His inspired written word in the form of our canonized Christian bible. Within it He has clearly made Himself known and has shown us His power, love, holiness and capabilities. He has told us that we have no justification for denying His existence or for not being grateful to Him. (Romans 1:20) He has also told us that without faith it is impossible to please Him. (Hebrews 11:6.) Evolutionary theory sur-

vives based on elements protagonists propose and frequently revise. • A cosmological burst of energy 14 billion years ago. Let’s propose that both are independently probable and see where it leads us. Evolution suggests that all we see is adapting from simple to complex and that changes occurring are for the better of each species. Is that what we see happening? And at death that’s the end; we cease to exist except through offspring surviving us. By opening God’s bible we see a complete unfolding story. As fantastic and improbable as it seems it tells us vital truths. God loves all of us and has demonstrated His existence, creativity and power over and over. He has also shown us the devastation of sin and its consequences and He has given us all free choice to believe and choose Him or not. The stakes are high however, because if we choose God, we spend the rest of eternity with Him, if we reject God, we don’t just cease to exist, the bible says we spend the rest of eternity in Hell. Matthew 25:41. If evolution is the truth then we all just revert to dirt. If creation is the truth then accepting God’s offer of salvation or not is vital; our eternal destination rests on that choice.

Museum assistant director Alexandrea Pizza explains in detail what happened. “The museum’s main location is at 131 W Main St and is inside the Historic Hoffman Hotel, built in 1852,” she said. “The collections were previously stored inside the early 1900’s addition to the hotel which was once the Hoffman Store. The walls are made of plaster and brick and so were very porous and drawn to moisture build up—a dangerous combination for historic artifacts. Although the former collections space was temperature and humidity controlled, it was much more difficult to keep the environment stable, hence the mold outbreak after the air conditioning went out for 48 hours in the summer of 2018.” The new home for the col-

lection is a sturdy red brick structure owned by Gaston County. It was formerly the Mary Ellen Nelson Center, an education center for children. The portion where the museum archives are now located was totally renovated and has state of the art security and environmental controls. “We are so thankful to have this new storage location and the ability to serve the public in a more direct way by sharing the art and history of Gaston County with the community,” Pizza said. So, what’s available for the public to come see? To name just a few of the vast amount of items- the collection includes pottery done by local artists, a huge number of vintage photos, painted portraits of local leaders, family documents, handwoven baskets, swords, textile related items, hats, vintage clothing, farm equipment, quilts, maps, Bibles, books, letters, and much, much more. The “stuff” fills up five temperature and humidity controlled rooms. How does one go about

seeing the archives? Well, it’s not like a library where you can just go in and browse around. “People who want to see items need to contact us and make an appointment,” Pizza said. “That also helps us know in advance what we need to collect and have ready for them.” Once a visitor arrives, they will be seated in a special viewing room with a nice table to put the materials on. The room is also kept at a cool temperature for the safety of the items. “They might want to bring a sweater,” said Pizza. So far, the new location has had a number of calls regarding materials. We have to invest in our workforce today so our schools will have leaders tomorrow.” The opportunity for teachers to earn a master’s degree from Gardner-Webb is offered through the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy. Tuition is free for the teachers who are chosen for the program; participants have to pay for books, which will be about $200 a semester. Through the partnership, Gardner-Webb and the school district will split the cost to pay for the participants’ tuition, which is estimated at $20,000 per teacher. “Sometimes, teachers have an interest in becoming a school administrator and show promise of being an excellent one, but they do not have the financial resources to pay for a master’s degree,” explained Dr. Booker. “This partnership takes the financial burden out of the equation so teachers can work toward fulfilling their educational career goals.” Dr. Booker concluded, “We are extremely grateful for Gardner-Webb University’s commitment to helping us train and develop future school leaders. BANNER-NEWS OBITUARIES was born January 19, 1943 in Gaston County, North Carolina, a son of the late Carl Queen and Lucille Pack Queen. Barry was a 1961 graduate of Belmont High School and proud veteran of the U. S. Air Force. He retired from R. L. Stowe Mills after many years of faithful service then worked with Victory Chevrolet as a lead driver. Barry was a Godly man who served actively within his church home. He was a very loving husband and father and was proud of his beautiful grandchildren. He will be missed greatly by his wife of Belmont, North Carolina nearly 30 years Rita Wright Queen; son Craig Queen and Barry Clement Queen, 78 his wife Kellie of Belmont; passed away unexpectedly stepson Darin Little and his on October 15, 2021. He wife Selena of Belmont; step daughter Tracey Reynolds

What will you do? By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org A few weeks ago, I got a jury summons in the mail. My daughter asked me what it meant. I took a moment to explain to her that in this country, we all have the right to a trial judged by a group of our peers. As a juror, we must decide based on the evidence if someone is guilty or innocent. Often in our lives, we have to take stands on many things. As divided as our society is today, more than likely we will have to take a stand one way or another. As Christians, we will face times when we need to take a stand for Jesus. In Matthew 27:11-26, after Jesus was arrested in the garden, He faced trial by the High Priest and other religious leaders. They condemned Jesus to death even though He had done nothing wrong. However, they had no power to condemn a person, so they took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. Pilate knew the High Priest and religious leaders had brought Jesus because they were jealous of Him. He also knew that Jesus was innocent and did not deserve death. Pilate tried to release Jesus, even offering to release Him during the annual prison release, except the people chose a notorious criminal Barabbas instead. The religious

leaders even threatened Pilate that if He released Jesus, he was going against Rome. Pilate finally took a basin of water and washed his hands, saying he washed his hands of Jesus, turning Him over Rev. Trent Rankin to the people to be crucified. Pilate had to take a stand. He could have freed Jesus, yet he chose not to act. One way or another, we will make a choice in life. When Pilate washed his hands, it did not absolve him of the guilt of Jesus’ death. Pilate knew what was right, yet he condemned an innocent man. As we face choices in life, we know what is right. We may see someone in need, an injustice being done, or a person who needs to hear the gospel. What will we do? Inaction may seem safe, yet it will cost us our character and virtue. Pilate had to face the knowledge he was guilty of the blood of Jesus. Taking a stand may cost us. Standing up for Jesus in the midst of an age far from God may cost us friends, jobs, or other things we have. One thing is for sure however, we never fail standing up for Jesus. We may not gain the praise of this world, but we know our reward is in heaven. When important decisions arise in your life this week, what will you do?

The 2021 high school football regular season is winding down. While there are still a few games left on the schedule many local teams can't help but look ahead just a little to see what their chances are at postseason play. The formula to determine playoff eligibility is complicated. While overall record definitely counts conference standing is of utmost importance. To guarantee a playoff spot a team needs to come in first or second in their conference. After that teams across the state are ranked according to a formula approved by the North Carolina High School Athletics Association. The formula is based off of a team’s RPI. RPI stands for Ratings Percentage Index. The RPI ranks teams based on their winning percentage, their opponent’s winning percentage and their opponents, opponents winning percentage. Sound complicated? Well it is. Let’s break it down. If you don't finish first or second in your conference then your RPI formula ranking will determine whether or not you get a playoff spot. As of right now East Gaston, South Point, and Stuart Cramer have no way of finishing the regular season in first or second in their conferences. However, all three teams have a shot at getting a playoff slot based on what their RPI looks like at the end of the season. As of press time Cramer and East Gaston both have two conference games left on their schedule while South

Point has three. Here is a breakdown of where each teams stands and what they have going for them moving forward. East Gaston Sitting at 5-3 the East Gaston Warriors have been the surprise of the year. The Warriors field a well-rounded offense featuring an excellent running game and a credible passing attack. The running back duo of Justin Hill and Markel McKinney prime the Warrior offense. McKinney and Hill are talented players that complement each other. Both are capable of taking over a game, and both bring something different to the table. Hill is a tough downhill runner, while McKinney is a dual threat weapon capable of burning defenses on the ground and by catching balls out of the backfield. So far this year Hill has 1075 yards off of 129 carries for 12 touchdowns while McKinney has 850 yards and 11 scores off of 90 carries. McKinney has also hauled in 25 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. While not flashy the Warriors defense is sound. For the most part they keep the team in the game. Looking forward East Gaston has two Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference games left. This week the Warriors line up against Shelby and then next week they finish the regular season against Highland Tech. Based on the laws of averages it's probable that EG will finish the year 6-4, but anything is possible.

While 6-4 is a decent record it doesn't exactly illustrate how much improvement the Warriors have made this year. In two of East Gaston's losses the games went down to the wire. This week's loss against Burns and an October 3rd game against Stuart Cramer were decided by only one score. If East Gaston had gotten a bounce here or there they could have easily have been 7-1. East Gaston head coach JT Postell thinks that the future is full of possibilities. "We would have liked to pull off a win last night," Postell said. "That would probably have locked us in.” Postell understands that nothing is etched in stone at this stage, but EG is still in the game. "Everyone is adjusting to the new playoff format," Postell added. "I think we still have a decent shot at making the playoffs. That was one of our goals going into the season." South Point Along with Stuart Cramer, South Point is one of two local teams in the Big South 3A. As of press time the Red Raiders were 5-3 with three games left to go. South Point still has games against Ashbrook, Forestview and North Gaston left on the schedule. If everything works out for the Red Raiders they could very well finish up with an 8-3 record but can still do no better than third in the Big South. Even if South Point can't win the Big South they are still a force to be reckoned with.

The Red Raiders triple option offense is still potent. Senior running back Tyson Riley has had a good year, so far running for over 1300 yards and 16 TDs. On the other side of the ball the South Point defense has shown that they are capable of keeping pace with just about anyone. Linebacker Ryan Harris is the Red Raiders top tackler with 62 tackles so far this year. While it’s hard not to think about the various “what if” situations South Point head coach Adam Hodge is doing his best to focus on the here and now. He knows that with the new playoff format any improvements to South Point's final record will only help the cause. "It's tough on everyone," Hodge said of the new format. If South Point wins out they have a better than average shot at a bracket spot. South Point has two things going for them that increase their playoff chances. First is that the fact that the Red Raiders play in the Big South, one of the toughest conferences in the state. Secondly, the Red Raiders opted to play a tough non-conference schedule with some top tier teams. Those two factors, when combined will definitely enhance South Point’s RPI.

Roquemore is an elite athlete who is capable of passing and running with equal efficiency. So far this year Roquemore has thrown for 1,257 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for another 426 and four scores. The Cramer defense is stingy and opportunistic. The unit is led by defensive end Arias Nash and linebackers Josue Sanchez and Daimean Fernandez. While the Cramer offense has been explosive and the Storm's defense has been outstanding the path forward will still be tough. Cramer is vying for a playoff spot in a very competitive Big South 3A. Like South Point, Cramer will greatly enhance their chances of getting a playoff spot by winning out their final two games against North Gaston and Forestview. If the Strom win out they will finish the season with a

6-4 record. Like South Point, the RPI may just work in their favor. Due to the toughness of the teams playing in the Big South, Cramer may just have an edge over teams from weaker conferences. Head coach Ben McMillan knows how important the final games are. He also hasn't counted his team out. "We definitely have a shot of getting into the playoffs,” McMillan said. “We just have to take care of business these last two games." Of course at this stage in the game anything is possible. What will happen is anyone's guess. There are no crystal balls or easy predictions to rely on. What can be said is that if the Storm, Warriors and Red Raiders hope to line up for post season action next month they need to win as many of their remaining games as possible.
