2020 election one for the history books By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The 2020 General Election last week is one that will go down in history. The local voting scene was pretty much wrapped up quickly. The national Presidential scenario not so much. Early voting was the name of the game across the board. In Gaston County alone, 63.24 percent (95,449) of the 150,704 registered voters cast their ballots before the Nov. 3 election day came along. Visits to local polling places confirmed that fact.
This reporter visited polling locations in Mt. Holly, Belmont, Cramerton, and Catawba Heights and the long lines of voters that some folks had feared were not in evidence. Neil Chastain had arrived early at the Belmont Central Elementary polling place and had this to say. “I was here at 6:30 am and there were about fifty people in line but the line dwindled quickly,” he said. At the Mt. Holly polling place, poll chief Tina Sagasi gave this report. “After early voting was over, there were only about
1,600 voters in this precinct who had not voted,” she said. Poll chief Jonathan Baines at Cramerton gave his observation. “It has been steady, but slow,” he said. Catawba Heights poll chief Jeremy McCarey called the turnout “steady”. At press time, here are the numbers. North Carolina governor Roy Cooper (DEM) defeated challenger Dan Forest (REP) 2,803,782 (51.48%) to 2,563,258 (47.06%) In the contest for U.S. Senator, incumbent Thom See ELECTION, Page 6

Belmont Parks and Rec. gets new bus By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The City of Belmont Parks and Rec. Dept. has just received a much needed brand new activity bus. The bus, a Starcraft brand, was
bought from Carpenter Bus Sales out of Franklin, Tenn. and cost $98,000. “It was a good deal,” said Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe. “It was mostly paid for with money from the sale of some land in North Belmont. The
rest came from the general fund.” The bus can carry 25 passengers along with two wheelchairs. Colorful graphics with the new City of Belmont logo were done by See BUS, Page 3
The Town of Stanley recently honored the late U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Nicholas O’Brien by naming the new Blacksnake Rd. bridge in his honor. O’Brien, 21, of Stanley, North Carolina died June 9, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Ralph Most of us have met what some folks refer to a “colorful character”. In fact, I too have been referred to in this way (among other things). One of the most colorful people I have ever known was named Ralph Huffstetler. Heck, Ralph was Technicolor and Panavision rolled into one. Ralph was my grandmother Mozelle’s second husband. They were married from the early 1960s until she died in 1979. They lived on Ferstl Ave. in Catawba Heights. She was very conservative. He was very….well… adventurous. He loved telling tales some of which seemed rather outlandish….until he pulled out the proof that they were true. A perfect example of this was the story he related to me several times about having been in the French Foreign Legion. Now, how many people in our area have ever been in the French Foreign Legion? Not a lot. Ralph told me about guarding camel caravans in the Sahara Desert and hanging out with Arabs around the campfire. This was allegedly around 1930-ish. One day I more or less told Ralph he was full of it. He went to the bedroom and came out with a cigar box. In it were photos of himself in a Foreign Legion uniform. He had a big handlebar mustache and was holding a rifle and bayonet taller than he was. The box also had several trinkets he said he and a fellow Legionnaire got when they were poking around in an ancient tomb in Egypt. After he was in the Legion, Ralph said he joined the merchant marine. He had a hula hula girl tattooed on his forearm right where the muscle is that flexes when you make a fist. My grandmother hated that tattoo. For fun Ralph would flex his arm and the hula girl would do her thing. It was really funny to see. After his stint in the merchant marine, Ralph joined the Coast Guard. He was in WWII and made five crossings of the Atlantic Ocean in a little Coast Guard cutter guarding ship convoys against German U-Boats. Here again I called BS on Ralph for telling that tale. Here again, Ralph called BS on me and got out a black wool Navy sweater of the type worn by WWII sailors. He also had a book of poetry by Robert Burns that he gave my cousin Rhonda Hambright. He had gotten the book in Scotland at the port where the convoys unloaded their supplies. Ralph took part in the D-Day invasion. Rhonda
told me a few months ago that when she was a kid Ralph was talking about being in the Coast Guard and he began to cry and told her about how on D-Day his cutter had to pull in close Hodge to shore and recover Alan Banner-News Editor bodies and body parts out of the water. Ralph had a cottage at Garden City Beach named the Snort and Growl. Sometimes we would go there. On one visit I noticed that Ralph was making a lot of trips to the bathroom and as the day wore on and the bathroom jaunts added up he grew very talkative and began laughing up a storm. I heard the porcelain toilet tank lid clinking. I went in after Ralph left and took the tank lid off and there was a bottle of booze in the cool water. From his years at sea, Ralph got psoriasis on his arms something fierce. In his garage he built a plywood structure that looked like an outhouse. He lined it with tin foil and put ultraviolet lights in it. He put a stool in there and a stack of Argosy and Stag magazines and would sit in the ultraviolet glow wearing only a pair of sunglasses, reading, and letting the light work on his skin problems. Ralph told me he lived in Charleston for several years and that once he and a friend were walking along the Cooper River and an African American lady came up and said an alligator had just eaten one of her kids and had devoured another one the previous year. I did not ask Ralph for proof of this story. After my grandmother died I lost touch with Ralph. My mom told me that a few months after Maw Maw’s passing one of Ralph’s neighbors called and said he was sitting in the gold fish pond with only his head above water. In retrospect I have to say Ralph was wild but had a good heart. He was utterly faithful to my grandmother. Do you have a colorful character in your life? Don’t believe everything they say, but somewhere there’s probably a vein of truth in it so listen and learn.
Send me! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
This week we have honored and celebrated all of the faithful men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces. This week we have celebrated Veterans Day. When we think of our veterans, such attributes as selflessness, sacrifice, and bravery come to mind. We celebrate their love for their fellow man, and their nation. We honor their service. As we near closer to Thanksgiving, one of the greatest ways we show our thanks is our service to God. Isaiah had an awesome vision recorded in Isaiah 6:1-8, where he stood face to face with God. He saw God upon His throne high and lifted up. There were also seraphim before God. They each had six wings, two covering their face, two covering their feet, and with two they flew. Their voices shook the room as thy spoke. As Isaiah saw this awesome scene, he cried out in confession of his sins, and the sins of the people of Israel. With a hot coal from the altar, one of the seraphim laid it upon Isaiah’s lips, telling him he was now cleansed from his sin. As this was happening, Isaiah heard God asking who He could send, and who would go for Him. At that moment Isaiah cried out, “Here I am! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8, ESV). Isaiah was thankful for what God had done for him, and he gladly went to serve
as a prophet. Our veterans are also glad to serve, thankful for their nation and freedoms. As Christians, we like Isaiah, have been cleansed from our sins. Through Jesus we are free. In our thanks to God for His saving grace, we serve Him. We live for Jesus and spread His good news to all we meet. This week we honor our veterans for their service and sacrifice. They miss birthdays, Christmases, and give up so much for us so we can be free. Many have even given their lives for us.
Will we follow the example of Isaiah, and our veterans? Will we commit to serve? We have been given so much, and we have so much to be thankful for. Are we ready to express that thanks through our service to God? Our world is lost in sin, far from God, and desperate for Jesus. Imagine we are standing before God like Isaiah did, hearing God ask who will go, who will serve? Will we look at God, saying confidently, “Here I am! Send me!”

Meditations Don’t be silent about Jesus By Rev. Angela Pleasants In my twenty-two years of ministry, I witnessed various ways the United Methodist denomination launched creative ideas to “do church.” We experienced the seasons of Vision 2000, Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors, Rethink Church, Impact Day, Fresh Expressions, and much more. We launch expensive campaigns, including commercials, billboard signs, t-shirts, pens, cups, and other ways to spread the news and a little Good News. Throughout my years experiencing the variety of ways our denomination has tried to stay on the cutting edge of “doing church,” I have attended countless seminars on leadership, ethics, and church growth. Often, in the church growth seminars, they will bring in someone from a megachurch to share their story of how they grew to thousands. Many pastors would leave questioning, “How do I take this back to rural North Carolina.” My setting is entirely different. We can be the church in so many ways. One model does not work for everyone. But I want to take us back to the first-century church. They did not have the big stages of some of our megachurches we see on television. The early Christians would not be handing out cof-
fee mugs at the latest convention. There were no catchy slogans or hip pastors with skinny jeans and spiked hair. There were no church planting workshops, but church growth was unprecedented. So, what did they have? They had the gospel Good News and the power of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes in Christian circles, I hear, “We are competing with the world. We must have the latest, or they will pass us by.” Or I hear, “Well, we had fall festivals and cookouts, but they never come back.” We are the body of the living God! We are not competing with the world; we have something better than the world. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also the Greek.” Romans 1:16 NKJV. The first-century church growth was unprecedented because filled with the Holy Spirit; they preached the gospel of Jesus Christ. They did not become like the world to appeal to the world. Nor did they stop preaching in the name of Jesus. “So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For
we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.’” Acts 4:18-20 NKJV. I often share words of wisdom from my friend who lives in Chicago. He is unchurched, but I learn much from him and his awareness of God. He said, “Angela, we in the world don’t want all the gimmicks, big bands, and productions the church tries to give us to get us in. Just tell me about Jesus. We just want Jesus.” Some think, “If we talk too much at the beginning about Jesus, they will not come.” If I go to Culinary school, I will hear about cooking. If I go to law school, I will listen to teachings about the law. I will not attend a law school and tell the students and professors, “I don’t want to hear about torts and contracts.” If people come to the body of Christ, we should not be silent about Jesus. “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him, the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s and of the holy angels.” Luke 9:26 NKJV. We should not be timid to proclaim to the world that Jesus is Lord. Nor should we dilute the message to resemble the world to draw the world. The gospel we preach is the divinely appointed means to bring salvation to the world.

Gaston Printing and Signs. Stowe says the city should get at least ten to fifteen years of use out of the bus. Parks and Rec. already has an older bus that was very well used with over 60,000 miles on the odometer.. Stowe explained how the new bus will enhance the Parks and Rec. transportation situation. “We will use it for senior citizen outings as well as trips by the city council to other cities and counties,” he said. “It will really help with our summer youth and adult programs and trips to ball games.” All that planned travel and action is of course is dependent on the Covid-19 situation. In response to requests by citizens for more hiking trails, it will be receiving some updates and changes. “We will be changing 3,200 feet of trail to make it better suited for multi-purpose activities such as walking,” Stowe said. “It will be more diverse and part of the Carolina Thread Trail.” Seven new bridges will be built on the trail at a cost

According to Stowe, work on the project should start in December and take three to six months to complete depending on the weather. I am so thrilled and honored that the people of the 5 th Congressional District voted to make me their representative to Congress. Thank you to each person who made our victory possible. In the midst of a difficult and sometimes tumultuous year, I’m grateful that North Carolina voters gave me the privilege of fighting for them in Congress. Leadership in times of crisis requires great trust, and I am humbled to receive the endorsement of so many.

In the coming year, I will again make listening to and elevating the voices of North Carolina workers, families, and job-creators a priority. I will also continue fighting for more common-sense, conservative solutions to help us renew, restore, and rebuild from the global pandemic and make sure your concerns are heard in Washington. As we embark on a new year and a new Congress, I look forward to getting to know this community better along with the wonderful people who live here. You can count on hearing from and seeing me soon! Gratefully, y,

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Three crosses
Workers unload and assemble the table in the City Hall conference room. Photos by Alan Hodge
By Dennis Siracusa Most Hollywood blather contains a jaundiced view of love at best but when we kneel at the base of the Old Rugged Cross, we understand what authentic love is. Sadly, we don’t do much kneeling do we; we’re too fast paced and busy for kneeling. Fast food, fast cars, and fast living; and the living we want is smooth, doesn’t hurt much, inconvenience much, or cost much unless we spend it on ourselves. Within fast living we know, deep down, what sin is even if we don’t think about it much. We’ve all felt the sting of Satan’s whip in some way or shape; broken relationships, alcoholic hangovers, addictions, depression and hundreds of other painful experiences; ones we don’t want to repeat. How do we accomplish that; not repeat the same disasters? What we’ve tried in the past hasn’t worked. What if we tried God and His instruction manual, the bible? Why? Because the root cause of our pain in this world is our turning our back on God and believing a pack of Satan’s lies. Lies like we evolved, that we have no overriding purpose in life, and that there is no possible way for you and me to live a holy life like the Lord tells us to. I Thessalonians 4:3. Don’t you know God is infinite and nothing is impossible for Him? The Lord wants to help us live a life full of life no matter where we stand right now; to do that He has to clean
us up because all of us are weighed down with sin. One trendy area that spawns sin is social media which is FAKE. It’s not real, authentic, or even relevant. It is, however, our choice to be involved just like choice was involved with crucifying Jesus 2,000 years ago. When Jesus shed his blood 2,000 years ago in atonement for all our sins, there were two other crosses along with his. Each bore a thief who was being crucified along with our sinless savior and both had a choice. One, even at that late moment, turned to Jesus for forgiveness and help; and he got it. Today, there are still three crosses for each of us servants of the Lord to carry. The first is to stay focused on Jesus, His sacrifice, promises, Word, and example as much as possible. Second, we must intentionally have our spirit and the life of God’s holy Word in us, controlling our souls (minds, wills, and emotions) and our bodies. Third, we need to be available to the Lord as an instrument of His kingdom work by taking our eyes off ourselves and looking for ways to offer the love of Christ to hurting people. By meeting people where they are and speaking truth to those who are struggling, stumbling, and on the wide path to eternal separation from Jesus. Prayer: Father, you have blessed us with your amazing grace and mercy. Empower us to faithfully offer it to others in your amazing variety of forms.
Gasoline demand drops keeping pump prices low
City of Belmont gets beautiful table for City Hall Last week the City of Belmont received a magnificent, handmade, table for the conference room in the new City Hall. The 14x5 ½ foot table was made from wood repurposed from the 100-yearold Chronicle Mill project
owned by John and Jennifer Church. The centuries old yellow heart pine wood was part of the mill’s second story supports. Construction of the table was done by Brian Hackett and Christopher Stone. Iron Giant crafted the wrought iron
Gasoline demand has dropped significantly since the beginning of the month, causing averages to steadily decline and keeping pump prices in the Carolinas fairly low. “Because of lower demand, the United States has a healthy level of gasoline stocks,” said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group in the Carolinas. “This is what’s keeping pump prices
low right now.” On the week, North Carolina’s $1.98 average made the nation’s top 10 largest weekly changes with a three cent decline. This is seven cents less than a month ago and 41 cents cheaper than last year. South Carolina’s $1.88 average made the nation’s top 10 least expensive markets, also seeing a three cent decline. This is six cents less than a month
ago and 40 cents cheaper than last year. Today’s national average is $2.16, the same price as last week, two cents less than last month and 44 cents cheaper than last year. This summer brought an increase in demand compared to spring, but with COVID-19 cases increasing, activity at the pump is declining with both fill-ups and prices.
base. “We want to make an effort to bring the history of Belmont to the new City Hall building through furniture and art that honors our heritage,” said city spokesperson Jamie Campbell.

Thanks to the Town of Dallas, the Dallas Police, Chief Walls, and the Dallas Walmart for providing the pumpkins for the Carr Elementary Kindergarten Pumpkin Patch. The students were so excited. Thanks to everyone who made this happen. Gaston Schools photo

Gaston Day students decorate picnic tables Gaston Day School eighth grade art students worked on a project to turn picnic tables into functional art. Because students are spending more time in outdoor spaces, eighth grade parents donated twelve tables for the GDS community to use. The students created their own designs with a partner,
and incorporated an element from the “portrait of a graduate” into their designs. Portrait of a Graduate : Gaston Day School Spartans pursue scholarship and knowledge as a means to…create solutions, collaborate, and drive innovation within their world, discover their unique talents and ignite their pas-
sions, embrace their humanity and diversity, approach opportunities and challenges with self-motivation and resilience, achieve a life of curiosity, balance, and purpose. These tables have added a lot of color and energy to the GDS Campus. Good job Eighth Grade!
Wootton is semifinalist
Belmont Abbey golfers Jena Nagy (pictured) and Bridget Forgatch tied for third at the recent Crusader Challenge hosted at the Green Valley Country Club. Six members of the Belmont Abbey women’s golf team finished in the top ten after the one-round tournament. Belmont Abbey photo
The Gaston Christian School boys cross country team led by Connor Nanney and Adam Hoyle recently won the NCISAA 3A Title. The team had three runners in the top 15. Well done!
Give a shout-out to Stuart W. Cramer High School student Jacob Wootton. Jacob is a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, giving Gaston County Schools four high school seniors who will compete against other students from across the country to win a prestigious National Merit Scholarship. Jacob transferred to Gaston County
Schools recently, and is at Stuart W. Cramer where the teachers and counselors there will do an excellent job of helping him navigate the National Merit competition. Gaston Schools’ other three semifinalists are Sydney Lester and Grace Nehring of South Point High School and Marshall Pearson of Highland School of Technology.

The Belmont Abbey Black team blocked 15 Red attempts and Andrew Kohut tallied 13 kills, leading to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20) victory in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night at the Wheeler Center. The Halloween night action was the second of two fall sessions for the Crusaders. Kohut hit .152 (13-8-33) for the Black team, while the Red has a pair of players also tally 13 kills - freshmen Justin Kean and Matteo Miselli. William Morris and Kohut dominated the middle, with 14 and nine blocks, respectively. 13 of Morris’ were assists, while Kohut also had one solo with eight helpers. Clayton Zimmerman of the Red team was credited with 37 assists to Brennan Davis’ 26 for the Black. Jake Somers (Red) led all players with eight digs, while Davis had a match high three aces.
