Charlie Craig - the king of local vintage automobilia By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Back around 100 years ago an Egyptologist named Howard Carter stumbled across the unplundered tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. When Carter poked his flashlight in a hole in the tomb door to see what was inside, the guy behind him asked if he could see anything at all. Carter replied “Yes, wonderful things”. Well, folks, that’s pretty much the scenario when

Charlie Craig of Belmont throws open the doors of the garages at his estate at 4320 S. New Hope Rd. However, instead of gold-crusted goodies and a withered up old mummy, Craig’s treasure trove is an astounding collection of vintage automobiles and stock car racing memorabilia. Indeed, Craig might have the largest assemblage of this kind of stuff west of the official NASCAR museum in Charlotte. Craig describes it thusly. “I have a lot of pretty neat

junk,” he said. But what junk! Cars include a perfectly restored dirt track racer from the early 1950s, a pristine 1961 Corvette, a sharp 1967 Impala, a couple of F150 pickups, and his wife Donna’s gleaming orange 1971 VW bug to name a few. Can you say collectibles? The shelves in Craig’s garage groan with race trophies, vintage helmets, racing suits, and countless photos of him with stars who have come calling including David Pearson and Ellie Mae Clampett. Communities across our area held Veterans Day ceremonies last Thursday and the one in Cramerton was among the best. Citizens gathered at 11am in downtown Cramerton at the Veterans Memorial and paused to reflect on the service and sacrifices of our

military veterans, Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient Larry Rick was Master of Ceremonies for the event. One of Rick’s friends and fellow Vietnam vet Fred Glenn led the crowd in prayer. Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and Bronze Star recipient Capt. Scott Kincaid delivered the keynote address. See VETERANS, Page 9

I missed 29 and found 95 and added something to my gratitude list By Tony Marciano In mid-October, I was heading to New Jersey via Northern Virginia. I would travel halfway and stop at my sister’s house. The next day I would ride with her to New Jersey. Being the detailed person she is, she gave me specific written instructions on how to get to her house. It reminded me of the days of Map Quest. Great idea. Instructions written line by line. The problem was you couldn’t read those lines while driving at 65 mph. That’s what happened. I put my sister’s address in the GPS and left home. Unfortunately, I pressed the wrong “GO” button on my phone. I misunderstood the map thinking it was taking me through the mountains by way of I-81. It wasn’t. It had planned to take me on U.S. 29. I followed those directions perfectly. There came a point where I was to stay on Route 29, but the GPS told me to take I40 which would lead me to I 95. I think I remember seeing something about Route 29, so I thought I was going in the correct direction. As we continued to drive, I saw less and less of Route 29 and more and more of 95. At a point, we were going

through Richmond. We were on I 95. That was the last road I wanted to travel on. In fact, the last time I drove it was when I first arrived in Charlotte in 1996. I was heading back to spend the weekend with my family who was in Northern Virginia. At 10pm, my tire blew out on I 95. It was pitch black. I could barely see, the spare tire needed air and I managed to hobble to a gas station to add air. The next day, I found myself in a Price Club (remember that store) getting four new tires. I had no idea where I was. I didn’t want to go into Washington D.C. Road signs kept telling me how many miles I had to go to get to our nation’s capital. I worked there for three years. I never wanted to go back. I called my sister in desperation. Classic Italian drama, “It’s the end of the world and I will end up in DC, never to be seen again.” I think she wanted to slap me because she said to take a certain road. It was 10 miles ahead. It was 50 miles before DC. We were finally off the Interstate and enjoying the beautiful Virginia countryside. Life happens. In the world of addiction that I move in

every day, we have Tony Marciano to teach the Rescue Mission residents to “learn to live life on life’s terms.” In spite of missing my exit, I was grateful. Because the entire trip was on Interstates, there were no stop lights I had to contend with. Traffic moved along quickly and only slowed down briefly as we came near Richmond. I was able to use the cruise control rather than stop every few miles for a light. Other drivers weren’t entering the highway from a hamburger fast food restaurant. There were on ramps and off ramps. While it was the last place I wanted to drive on, I was grateful. In a sense, it made the drive quite nice. When I returned, I decided to take Route 29. It was nice to see the countryside. but it was a two-lane highway that stopped every few miles for a red light. Each day you and I have options to determine how we will see what life throws at us. That choice, that response is ours to choose. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Gaston County Health Department begins appointments for pediatric covid vaccines The Gaston County Public Health Department announced it is opening appointments for the pediatric COVID-19 vaccines. The Pfizer vaccine is available for children ages 5 to 11 and appointments can be made at the following link: https://www.cognitoforms. com/GastonCounty1/covidschedulerunderage12shots. The Health Department has set up a separate portion of their facility at 991 W. Hudson Blvd. specifically for children’s vaccines. The state sent 1,200 doses of the children’s vaccine to Gaston County’s Health Department for the initial rollout of shots. The Health Department will

order more vaccine from the state based on community demand. Akers Pharmacy, CVS, Walgreens, StarMed and Kintegra are among the other providers in the community also providing the pediatric vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine currently federally approved to be provided for children. Children need the consent of their parent or legal guardian to receive the vaccine. Data from the clinical trials showed the Pfizer vaccine for children, which contains one-third of the dose in the adult vaccine, is safe and effective. There were no safety concerns or serious side ef-

fects noted in the clinical trials, which included more than 3,000 children in the U.S. Temporary side effects may include a sore arm, headache and tiredness or general achiness for about a day following the vaccination. As with the adult version, the Pfizer children’s vaccine is given in two shots, three weeks apart. As Thanksgiving Day gets closer and closer, we think of all the things we are thankful to God for. God has blessed us with families, life, and salvation through Jesus Christ. God has blessed us so much, and we have to say thank you, not just on Thanksgiving Day. One of the greatest ways we say thank you to God, is through our worship. As we offer God worship, we are praising Him for everything He has done and continues to do. In Samuel 6:12-21, Israel brings the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. After David had become king and established his rule in Jerusalem, he wanted to have the Ark there as well. David and the people of Israel brought the Ark back through a great processional, offering sacrifices to God as they traveled to Jerusalem. David led the way, dancing as he went. David wasn’t dressed in royal, kingly robes, but a simple linen robe. He danced with all his might before God. After the Ark was retuned and sacrifices had been made, David returned home. While home, his wife became angry with him, thinking his dancing and dress

was undignified for a king. David reminded her that he was dancing for God, celebrating what God had done for him. David worshipped that day. Worship is a vital component of thanksgiving. David knew God was worthy of his worship, and he dedicated his life to serving God. As we read many of the Psalms David wrote, we see just how much worship meant to him. God is worthy of our worship and thanks. Through Jesus, we have eternal life. Jesus deserves our worship every day, at church, in prayer, and as we read the Bible. Worship Him freely. David wasn’t concerned with who saw him, he was more concerned with praising God. During this season of thanks, make sure you take time often to worship. May we live our thanks, and also say them through worship. Don’t just offer the blessing over the turkey this year, but follow David’s example and make worship an important part of daily life. Take a moment and recall all of the things you have to be thankful for each day. As you recall each one, let your heart fill with worship and thanks to God, and praise Him! When worship becomes our natural response to God, like David, we will experience true thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving… the lost holiday By Lisa Harper I remember so clearly walking into a big box store a few weeks ago. What did I hear upon entering the front door? Can you say Christmas music? Oh, and by the way, this was on Halloween day. Even before the Halloween candy has been consumed, the Christmas decorations and related products are on the store shelves; Christmas movies are on TV. Plain and simple, Thanksgiving gets gobbled up by the ads and promotions…year after year. But wait, not so fast… somewhere between Halloween candy and Christmas tree lights, Thanksgiving seems to (every single year) simply get lost. There’s more emphasis on Black Friday sales than gathering around the harvest table to offer thanks for the blessings we often take for granted. Thanksgiving is simply a special time to pause and reflect on all the blessings in our life…to step back from our busy lives, our computers and phones, and be reminded of what really is important to us. Families and friends gather around the table to connect and make memories. It is nice to have at least one day dedicated to give thanks without expecting something in return. It is a simple holiday, but one with a clear message,

Thanksgiving is also a call to action. It’s important for us to remember that the word thanksgiving is composed of two words: thanks and giving. We give thanks, and we give and share our time and talents with other people who could use our help. In terms of thought and deed, the Thanksgiving holiday gives us an enriched perspective on the abundance in our lives. So, before you bury Thanksgiving under the lights and wrappings of the fast approaching holiday season, hold out to at least December 1. That is what I have done for as long as I can remember. I decorate autumn scenery inside and outside of my home..

Two servant leaders to retire from Holy Angels Dedication. Devotion. Faith. Love. Two of Holy Angels’ leaders have exemplified these words throughout their combined five decades of heartfelt service – service that comes to an end this December. With a heavy yet proud heart, Holy Angels announces that two of its stalwart servant leaders retire at the year’s end. Sr. Nancy Nance and Dennis Kuhn soon conclude nearly 60 years of caring commitment to this special ministry. Holy Angels’ President and CEO Regina Moody said that this is a loss for the nonprofit, but it’s also a concluding celebration of hard work for two of the organization’s biggest champions. “Sr. Nancy and Dennis are the epitome of service to the differently able,” noted Moody. “They have spent decades of their life bringing joy and love to residents in a

consistently caring and compassionate way. We couldn’t ask more of those who work with Holy Angels.” Sr. Nancy retires following 36 years with Holy Angels, serving in a variety of roles, primarily as the vice president of community relations, but always in a capacity to share Holy Angels’ mission: loving, living and learning for the differently able. What began with snapping photos of the residents for a presentation became more than three decades of giving her heart to the nonprofit. Sr. Nancy’s departure will mark the first time in Holy Angels’ history that a nun from the Sisters of Mercy will not act as a full-time staff member. Sr. Nancy will no longer be on campus – with plans to travel and learn – but she anticipates remaining connected, volunteering and taking more pictures, whenever she’s in town.

After 23 years, Kuhn completes his employment as pastoral and spiritual leader. He began his time at Holy Angels as the volunteer coordinator and soon moved to vice president of human resources. He was Holy Angels’ first chaplain on staff and developed the chaplain services for staff and residents. His introduction of “Mercy Moments” has made a lasting impact on the organization and it is what Kuhn considers his most significant contribution. During the last few years as the executive vice president and chaplain, he has significantly grown the Sr. Nancy and Lorraine during major gifts and planned Santa Day 2014. gifts programs. called a can storage unit, and volunteers helped build and install 41 of them. The units are used to shelve and organize the cans based on contents. Each unit has a label such as “black beans” and “green beans” to identify the items. The labels also include a picture symbol to accommodate for diverse learning needs. Students match up picture labels from an order that correspond to the items on the shelves and then place them in a box. “I look at the list and match the picture of the item to what is on the shelf,” said Berenice Aguirre-Alcantar, who is one of the students in charge of running the food pantry. Teacher Susie Rutherford is happy that the opportunity presented itself after her students were unable to experience realworld, off-campus job opportunities due to COVID-19. “They understand that our food pantry is a volunteer job, and they’re not getting paid, but they also know the skills they’re learning can translate to them getting a job in the community,” said Rutherford. “We provide whatever support they need to pull the orders, but they’re in charge of filling the orders.” For Kie-ajah Gibson, the food pantry provides motivation to be at school every day. “I love coming to school,” she

Eagle Scout Eli Poulsen and Webb St. principal Chris Mills said. “I have to put all the items in a box.” Chapel Grove Elementary school social worker Morgen Miller gave the students five stars for their hard work. “That was the most beautiful and smooth process ever,” said Miller after witnessing the students in action. “It warmed my heart to see their smiles as they packed the box and loaded it into my vehicle.” For the project, Poulsen earned his Eagle Scout rank. “It feels great to have achieved this honor and helps me feel confident knowing that I can work hard to meet my goals,” said Poulsen, who will be recognized with other Eagle Scouts at a ceremony in November. The food pantry is one of

the many job skills experiences available to students in the transitional classes. Students also assist by planting and harvesting vegetables, maintaining the school’s sensory garden, and caring for the fish in the school’s aquaponics system. Furthermore, Rutherford’s students are folding weekly bulletins, packing personal care items, and bundling cards and brochures. Anyone interested in supporting the “One Can Make A Difference” food pantry may donate canned and non-perishable food items to Webb Street School. Ashbrook High School student Eli Poulsen found an Eagle Scout service project that will have a long-lasting and meaningful influence at Webb Street School. Poulsen and Webb Street principal Chris Mills worked together to create a food pantry that will serve as a teachable moment for students and allow Poulsen to complete his Eagle Scout project. “One Can Make A Difference” is the name of the food pantry that is run and operated by students in the vocational training classes. “I was looking at service opportunities at Ashbrook High School when Dr. Rebecca Wilson (principal) told me about the food pantry,” said Poulsen. “Once I had the conversation with Mr. Mills, it was very motivating to know how this idea could contribute in so many ways.” The food pantry is used by the school district’s social workers. When a need arises, the social workers place an order online, and students at Webb Street work to fill the order. The process resembles an online grocery store experience where people order online and clerks do the shopping for the customers, who go to the store only to pick up their groceries. By Dennis Siracusa I’m restoring a 40 year old, fiberglass trihull boat. It seems undignified to haul this boat to the scrap yard especially since I can learn a lot from attempting to restore it. For instance relearning sailing rope knots has layers of knowledge. Yesterday I used a figure 8 binding knot to help two friends maneuver and load two farm tractors onto a trailer. The knot held, pulling 1,600 pound tractors! Knowing knots exist; reading about them; practicing tying them; and using them are all different. Using one is a dignified pivotal experience embracing the idea of value, correctness and importance. Yesterday it was important to know how to correctly fasten the tow lines to haul those tractors. Dignity, expanded, means self-worth, modesty, or greatness. As Thanksgiving swirls around us let’s think of our first one in Plymouth Massachusetts sometimes referred to as Patuxet because Wampanoag Patuxet natives had lived throughout New England long before the English and Spanish arrived. Our forefathers came to America because the Church of England began the un-dignified process of exerting increasing pressure on religions not practicing faith their way. This incited the protestant reformation, 1570-1648 AD, and the Puritan decision to leave England to practice their faith freely. The Puritans sailed to America, arriving at Plymouth November 11, 1620AD. The Mayflower carried a mixture of Puritan pilgrims along with adventurers called Strangers. As time for embarking arrived, circumstances had whittled their number from 150 Puritans to 50 and 50 Strangers both groups having divergent dreams. On arrival they formed the Mayflower

Compact together, a document with just and equal laws agreeing on the dignity of each life and recognizing their need to work together to survive. But other Strangers from England and Spain came to America seeing dignity differently. Many Europeans desecrated native graves, referred to them as savages and took on an attitude of dehumanization because, in their eyes, the natives were not human. Are we any better? Let’s look at a few examples we tolerate. By removing the AD above and making it the contemporary neutral CE meaning “after year1” instead of “anno Domini” removes the original dignity of “after Christ!” Last week national news had dignified reports of two “Alisters” with proud baby bumps so how does that express the value of human life when we abort baby bumps indiscriminately? And don’t many women’s fashions reduce women to sexually exploitable objects? Are these actions dignified? Dignity is best realized in our proper community with one another. Every Friday at sundown, orthodox Jews begin Shabbat with proverbs 31 remembering the dignity of women of valor. In Genesis 1 God talks about the dignity of mankind He created in His image and in John 3:16 God spoke about the dignity and value of life even though we are all sinners; “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Let’s dignify our lives by accepting God’s invitation to eternal life and let’s ask Him to help us live dignified, righteous lives in loving community with one another.

A Brief History of Veterans Day Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday hon- Fred Glenn leads the prayer. ored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

“What an honor to speak with veterans like Rick and Glenn,” Kincaid said. “They set an example of service and love of country.” Kincaid reminded event attendees that America’s veterans have proven “mightier than our most powerful adversaries”. He also called them “leaders tried and tested by fire”. He also remarked that veterans were “ordinary people but by leaning on each other our veterans can accomplish great things”. Finally Kincaid reminded the audience that veterans “laid the foundation for generations to come” and “we owe them a debt of gratitude that we can never pay”. In addition to the speakers, South Point High student Lydia Crawford sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem that added a lot to the solemn and thoughtful day.

How about the door from racer Fireball Roberts’ 1963 Ford. How about several vintage soap box derby cars. How about a rare racing go cart Craig restored. But wait, there’s more, including signage from area race tracks and racing legend Tiny Lund’s ”Pit Stop” campgrounds. Stacks of Hot Rod magazines, dozens of car models, and old oil cans are arranged in rare profusion. Outside, Craig’s grounds look like a vintage Sinclair gas station complete with pumps. OK, all you folks who drive along S. New Hope Rd and wonder what that old gas station is, now you know. How did Craig accumulate the massive motor memento collection? “Some of it I bought,” he said. “Other things are items folks bring for me to keep so they won’t be thrown away.” OK, that’s enough about that stuff, what about Craig. Well, he’s 71 years young and stays busy. When he’s not working on cars, he is employed by the Gaston County PD part time in their office. He also does a bit of pinstriping work on the cars and such of other enthusiasts. Craig’s automotive roots go back a long way. “When I was a kid in the early 1960s all we had was car racing and baseball,” he said. “We used to go to tracks like Robinwood, Carolina, York, Clover, and Shelby, Rock Hill, and Gastonia. Every fair-

The second round of the North Carolina high school football playoffs saw South Point and East Gaston battle their way to the Sweet 16 as the Red Raiders knocked off the number one seeded Pisgah Bears 27-24 in 3A action while in the 2A, the Warriors thumped the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets 41-27. South Point 27 Pisgah 24 Many may look at this as the upset of the week, but if you follow South Point football you know that on any given Friday night the Red Raiders can bring it. Right from the opening kick-off it looked like this was going to be a slugfest as both teams fought to establish control of the ball. The first half action was filled with gritty football fought in the trenches. At times the action was slow, as each squad ground out long clock-eating drives. Combined, the Bears and Red Raiders managed four drives with no punts in the first half. South Point went into the locker room at halftime up 13-10. In the second half both teams continued to hammer each other to see who could take control of the game. For a little while things were looking good for Pisgah as the Bears scored in the third quarter to take a 17-14

lead. But the tide shifted in the fourth quarter and the Pisgah rally was short-lived as South Point scored 14 points in the fourth including a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ashton Harris with 4:12 left on the clock. Looking back it’s fair to say that South Point won this one playing mistake-free, hard nosed football. “I thought both teams played really hard,” head coach Adam Hodge said. “At the end of the day we made more plays than they did. That’s just the way it went. They have a good football team.” A review of the post-game statistics shows that numbers don’t always equate to victory. Pisgah deployed a balanced attack totaling 311 yards of total offense compared to South Point’s 208 yards. However, that 208 proved to be enough.

South Point kept it on the ground, never throwing a pass. The Red Raiders got some solid work from running back Tyson Riley and quarterback Elijah Phifer. Riley ran for 109 yards off of 30 carries with two touchdowns while Phifer had 13 carries for 62 yards and a score. The Red Raiders had several players that put up notable defensive stats. Safety Will Ross finished the game with 15 stops while Jaquis Rumph had 11 tackles and Ryan Harris walked if the field with 10. This week Big Red will face a familiar foe as the Forestview Jaguars come to town. This will be a classic Big South 3A battle. The last time the Jags and Red Raiders met was on October 22nd. with a narrow 17-14 win. Since that loss the Jaguars had been on a three-game win streak including playoff wins against Erwin and Parkwood. Coach Hodge is under no illusions with this game. He knows the Raiders will need to be ready. “They have a dang good football team,” Hodge said of Forestview. “We will have to play hard.” East Gaston 41 Forest Hills 21 What can you say, 2021 has been one heck of a season for East Gaston. Last Friday the Warriors showed that they belong in the playoffs. EG gave the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium a show as they dismantled the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets on both sides of the ball. While the ending was never in doubt, things did start out bad for East Gaston when an untimely turn over let Forest Hills jump out to an early lead. “We overcame some adversity early,” head coach JT Postell said. “We fumbled on the opening kickoff and they were able to score two plays later.” Instead of dwelling on the mistake the Warriors responded by putting up 14 points in the first quarter and seven in the second to go into the half-time break up 21-7. “Our kids bounced right back,” Postell said. In the third quarter the

Yellow Jackets regrouped and closed the gap by putting up 14 third-quarter points compared to six for EG. Going into the fourth the Warriors were up 27-21. However, in the fourth quarter East Gaston poured it on putting another 14 points on the scoreboard while the Forest Hill offense fell silent. Throughout the night the Warriors defense played hard and forced the Yellow Jackets to make mistakes. Mistakes that the EG offense took advantage of. The Warriors offense pushed the ball down the field all night long churning out 415 yards of total offense. Quarterback Trenton Sherrill went seven for 11 for 60 yards and a TD while running backs Markel McKinney and Justin Hill ran roughshod over the Yellow Jackets. McKinney finished the night with 167 yards and a TD while Hill ran for 174 yards and three scores. Hill also pulled in a six yard touchdown pass from Sherill to round out his night. “I thought we played well overall,” Postell added. “Our defense forced four turnovers and offensively we were able to capitalize off of those turnovers.” This week the Warriors head to Shelby to take on the top seeded Golden Lions. The last time these two met in a Southern Piedmont 2A/2A matchup Shelby came away with a big 62-28 win.
