Internationally known artist (and Belmont resident) Juan Logan visits school kids By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

It’s not every day that an internationally known artist visits school kids, but that’s just what happened last week when Juan Logan stopped by Belmont Central Elementary where he chatted with fifth grade students in Anna Smith’s art class. “It’s wonderful to involve youth in the process of art,”

he said. “It is incumbent on us to find ways to share it.” Logan, who was born in Nashville and has lived for many years in Belmont, shared his passion for art and as an added thrill, gave the students autographed paper fans. Smith connected with Logan after she found out one of her students, Alex Echevarria, was his grand-

son. “I thought it would be cool to have him come talk to the students in my art class,” Smith said. Logan’s appearance had the kids in a tizzy. He brought a few examples of his abstract paintings and shared thoughts on his style and art in general. “Art is sometimes difficult,” he told the kids. “It

takes time but it’s worth doing.” Logan also touched on another aspect of art. “Art lets us learn about our past because in it we can see how people used to live and dress,” he said. The children were all ears during Logan’s presentation. “It’s amazing,” said one fifth grader named Jack. Another student, Sophie had this to say. “I like drawing so it’s exciting to meet him.” See LOGAN, Page 6

Christmas lights back to normal in McAdenville Last year’s Christmas Lights in McAdenville were reduced in scope but this year things are back to “normal”. Many of you may recall the story “Lassie Come Home” about a dog that was lost then after quite a period of time and much tribulation finally got back to where it once belonged. Well, a similar scenario is in the mix at the Mt. Holly fire dept. except instead of a dog, the wanderer is a 1944

Chevrolet fire engine that was once a part of the fleet there. Over the years there have been many twists and turns of fate and chance in the firetruck’s saga, but here’s the semi-abbreviated version. The truck was bought new after WWII and served Mt. Holly until 2002 when it was sold as surplus to vintage car collector Harold Russell. He kept it a while and passed

it on to a gent named Bob McRorie who resides off Mt. Holly Huntersville Rd. McRorie had planned on restoring it. In 2016, MHFD chief Ryan Baker just happened to see the truck in a Facebook photo at a child’s birthday party. Baker knew McRorie and asked about getting the truck. McRorie said thanks but no thanks. This Thanksgiving season we have talked a lot about many of the aspects of thanksgiving. We give our thanks to God through worship, at church, in our prayer life, and through Bible study. We also go beyond simply saying thank you. We live our thanks before God every day. We are showcasing Jesus to the world. Now that we’ve entered the week of Thanksgiving, what are we truly thankful for? Most people would say they are thankful for their families, a job, or perhaps their home, but what should we really be thankful for? In Luke 7:36-50, Jesus was invited to a Pharisee named Simon’s house for dinner. As Jesus sat reclined at the table with Simon and the others there, a woman entered. This woman was a known sinner in the town. She approached Jesus in tears. She began weeping over his feet. She broke an alabaster jar of oil and poured it upon the feet of Jesus. She dried the oil and her tears from His feet with her hair and kissed His feet. Simon questioned why Jesus would let a known sinful woman touch His feet. Jesus told Simon about two men who owed a lender money. One owed a large portion, the other a small amount. The lender forgave both men their debt. Jesus

told Simon that the one forgiven the most would love the most. Jesus forgave this woman of all her many sins, and she loved Jesus. This woman was Rev. Trent Rankin thankful for Jesus. In Jesus, we find hope. Hope in a hopeless world. In Jesus we find fulfillment. In Jesus we find love. This sinful woman, an outcast in her town, found everything she needed in Jesus. If we could ask her today what the most important thing was in her life, she would tell us Jesus. As we say thank you this season, we thank Jesus for being our everything. He is all we need. He is greater than anything this world offers. We thank Jesus because He is enough. What more could we ask for! Jesus gave His life so we could have abundant life through Him. This Thanksgiving Day, we all will gather with our families. We will gather around a table prepared with turkey and all the trimmings. Someone will offer the blessing to thank God for the day, and His many blessings. As you gather together, what will you be thankful for? As the woman in sin found out that day so long ago, the answer is easy, Jesus! Happy Thanksgiving!

He finally went home and they got to go camping. As they were sitting together he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he whispered, with eyes full of tears, “You know what? You have been with me through all the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When our business failed, you were there. When I was in a car wreck, you were by my side. You know what?” “What, dear?” she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with joy and warmth. He said “I think you’re a curse to me.” He was never seen again after that camping trip. I believe one of the biggest problems facing our culture today is blaming others or circumstances for our mess ups. The Bible says in Galatians 6:5 For each person will have to carry his load. In other words, take responsibility.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Years ago I was in a meeting where one of the supervisors was asked by one of the higher up’s how a project was coming along that he was working on. Well he blamed everything and everybody why he could not get any work done on the project. There was one excuse after another, and as he began to take a breath to start another long list of excuses, my good friend Jay (aka Jay Bird) interrupted and said.” I think I have something that you need that would help you a lot. Would you like to borrow it for a while?” “Oh yes” the supervisor said with great anticipation. “What is it?” Jay cocked his head

over to one side and said “Some backbone, I’ve got enough Mark Costner for the both of us.” One week later the supervisor resigned. Or pick one. Fired, terminated, laid off, it all means the same thing. He was gone. The project was then handed over to my friend Jay and it was finished in three days. So here’s the thing. Take responsibility, get a backbone and be careful what you say to your wife on camping trips.

Thankful by definition Fall is in the air, turkeys are on sale, harvest flags are flying, and family gatherings and meals are on our minds; yes, Thanksgiving is here but that begs the question…. do we really know how to be thankful? Thankfulness has several subtle nuances in meaning we should pay attention to. Let’s look at a few. Grateful, contented, indebted, and kindly disposed. This morning, at breakfast, I ate a food combination I hadn’t experienced before. I was thankful for the variety and new experience but also humbled because I knew of others in our city, country and world with far less to eat; many malnourished and starving; who would have been grateful for even one bite of my breakfast. It made me consider gratefulness but also responsibility; our responsibility to help others where we can. In The Chosen TV series about the life of Jesus Christ, we catch a realistic glimpse of life during biblical times; life was harsh in Middle Eastern Europe; similar to hard scrabble Texas ranchland. If we immerse ourselves in the

film and walk with Jesus and His disciples we see them often going a few days without eating at all or when they did it was a handful of lentils for dinner or plain porridge for breakfast. They accepted harshness of life because…. “that was the way things were.” Many were born into poverty and cruel rulers and harsh task masters made life even more unbearable. People learned to be content with what the land sparingly provided for a meal; a piece of fruit, a fish caught, or grain to bake some bread. Resplendent meals were few and far between. We live like kings in America; could we be content with less? Romans 1:20 points out two indisputable points. We can’t deny God exists, nor can we legitimately NOT offer Him our heartfelt thanks. He created us in His image with spirit, soul, and body and infused us with heavenly purpose. In Hebrews 1:2-3 we learn that Jesus, as creator architect of all creation, spoke everything into existence and holds everything together by the sustaining power of His Word. We are indebted to God for everything. Do we ever talk to

Him about that? We need each other. Henry Ford knew… “It’s not Dennis Siracusa what you know that’s as important as who you surround yourself with.” Others know with military certainty “if you want to safely traverse a minefield, go behind someone who has done it.” Everything in our universe depends on our interactive synergy. The bible paints a vast big picture. Romans chapter 12 speaks about us serving one another spiritually and functionally. John Donne knew “None of us is an island unto ourselves”; we’re all unique and made to interact with God and each other for the purposes God instilled in us, from the beginning of creation, and furthermore Jesus said in John 15:12 “This is my commandment that you love one another,” in the process. Father, thank you for you! This Thanksgiving, revive thankfulness in our hearts to its fullest degree and help us find ways to help and bless others daily.

Next, a TV show wanted to do a documentary about the truck and took it away. But the show fizzled and after a year McRorie finally got it back. Last month, McRorie contacted Baker and offered the use of the truck if it was ever restored. Over the years the truck’s engine and gearbox and other parts had ended up at a body shop. The MHFD got those pieces and hauled them to the Main Fire Station where they sit today. The truck body is still at McRorie’s house. Somewhere along the line, the truck’s cab had been chopped and made into a convertible. Nonetheless, Getting the body and engine back together and having them both in Mt. Holly is the dream. “It’s a piece of old Mt. Holly,” said Baker. “The end goal is to re-acquire the body, rebuild the engine, and use the restored truck in events

Normally, I would be juggling multiple events and training sessions. When all of that came to a screeching halt, I felt alone and with-

out a purpose,” said Thomas. Thomas says that’s when she picked up some leftover paint and a canvas and went to work. “As the tears fell on the canvas, the paint seemed to splatter into pretty shapes,” said Thomas. “When I looked down, I saw a heart. My tears had formed a heart on the canvas. To me, that was my sign. I collected all of the paints, brushes and everything I could find to paint on and I couldn’t stop. Soon I realized whatever was in my heart was coming to life on the canvas.”

The Mount Holly Community Garden will be holding its 6th Annual Christmas Enchantment in the Garden on Friday 12/10 from 5:00pm-9:00pm. This free, family-friendly event for all in the community has grown each year and is often called the “McAdenville of Gardens”. Located at 126 N. Main Street in Mount Holly, the Mount Holly Community Garden has quickly become a popular destination in the city, housing 52 organic garden beds each

leased and attended to yearly by garden members. Over the past 7 years, the Mount Holly Community has supplied the Mount Holly CRO with thousands of pounds of fresh produce, and implemented several free community wellness programs, such as, gardening classes, wellness cooking demonstrations, yoga in the garden and unique art projects. This year’s Christmas Enchantment in the Garden is sure to be one to remem-

Red Raiders beat Forestview, Warriors lose to Shelby By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com

The third round of the North Carolina High School football playoffs saw East Gaston and South Point make it to the Sweet 16. But after Friday night’s action only one would move on. South Point 27 Forestview 7 The last time South Point and Forestview met was on October 22nd. In that game the Red Raiders scratched out a 17-14 win off of a 27 yard Charlie Birtwistle field goal in double overtime. Since then both schools had been on a winning roll. South Point came into the rematch riding a five game win streak while Forestview came to Belmont on a three game winning run. Going into Friday night’s matchup at Lineberger Stadium there were no big surprises. The Red Raiders and Jaguars were old Big South 3A rivals. Each team knew exactly what the other was capable of. On paper, this one should have been close. However, as the game evolved it looked like South Point had no intention of being involved in a repeat of the October game. Senior running back Tyson Riley put the Red Raiders on the board first

with a three yard touchdown run. The Jags responded with a touchdown run of their own to tie the game up at 7-7 going into the 2nd quarter. In the second quarter the Red Raiders pushed out to a 14-7 lead off of a seven yard TD run by Elijah Phifer and a successful PAT kick by sophomore Charlie Birtwistle. South Point took a 14-7 lead into the locker room for halftime. In the second half the game was all South Point as the Red Raiders continued to control the ball and rack up points. South Point scored 10 points in the third quarter when Charlie Birtwistle hit a 31 yard field goal and Cam Medlock broke of a 22 yard touchdown scamper. It was looking good for Big Red going into the fourth with South Point up 24-7. In the fourth quarter Birtwistle drilled another field goal, this one from 23 yards out to wrap up an impressive 27-7 victory for South Point. Charlie Birtwistle delivered a solid performance finishing as the top high scorer of the game with two field goals and three successful PAT kicks. Offensively South Point’s grind-it-out rushing attack did its job. Once again, the

Red Raiders weren’t fancy, they were just efficient. Senior Tyson Riley was South Point’s top rusher with 96 yards. On the other side of the ball the South Point defense took their game to the next level. See FOOTBALL, Page 13

The East Gaston Warriors varsity football team took on the Shelby High Lions in the third round playoff game Friday night. It was a cold night and Shelby gave the Warriors a cold shower by coming out on top 64 to 15. Nonetheless, the Warriors had their best season in many years and deserve a big round of applause. Throughout the game the Red Raiders defense controlled the line of scrimmage by playing tough gritty football. The South Point “D” limited a normally prolific Forestview offense to a meager 96 yards. “I thought we played hard,” head coach Adam Hodge said. “We played good, and we played for each other.” Now, this week the 10-3 South Point will have to battle another familiar foe when they travel to Shelby to take on the 10-2 Crest Chargers. The last time these two teams lined up was on October 1st when Crest edged out the Red Raiders 27-26. Just like when the Red Raiders were getting ready for Forestview coach Hodge knows what it’s going to take

to beat the Chargers. Limiting turnovers and playing smart football are the keys to victory. “They are obviously a very talented team,” Hodge said of Crest. “They have a good running back and a good defense. Like I said last week, the team that makes the fewest mistakes will likely win the game.” Shelby 64 East Gaston 15 East Gaston’s fantastic 2021 season came to an end with a 64-15 loss to Shelby. While being knocked out of the playoffs is tough no one can take away from what the Warriors did this year. Head coach JT Postell and company have shown that anything is possible as a pro-

gram that has struggled to win for years has gotten back on track. This year East Gaston finished third in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A with a 6-4 record. In the post season the Warriors would go on to win two playoff games. After the loss to Shelby, East Gaston finished the year with a respectable 8-5 record. Coach Postell is proud of what his team has accomplished this year. “I’m really proud of the entire team,” Postell said. “Especially the seniors we will be losing. They have set the new standard for East Gaston football. As I told them after the loss, there is no going back, the expectations have been set. We need to build on that.”
