Ribbon cutting reveals rare reunion in Belmont By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Many ribbon cutting events for new businesses follow a rather regular routine. Folks gather, they chat, slap backs, shake hands, eat snacks, cut the ribbon, wish the new owner well, and drift back to where they came from. However, a recent ribbon cutting at the new Expedia Cruises office on South Point Rd. produced a very interesting twist that shows just how small the world can be when fate steps in.

When BannerNews ad sales executive Mayra Littman first spoke with Expedia owner Adriana Phillips, they began chatting about their backgrounds- Mayra is from Cuba and Adriana is from Colombia. Then, lo and behold, they learned they had both lived in New York CityQueens to be exact. Then Mayra mentioned that her brother Jose Alonso had attended Immaculate Conception school. So had Adriana. Thanksgiving came a couple of days early last Tuesday when a group of students at East Gaston High enjoyed a sumptuous lunch courtesy of the North Belmont Food Lion and teacher Sarah Robinson. The idea was hatched by Robinson to not only help her get to know her students a bit better, but to also make sure they had a nice holiday meal. Robinson has only been at East Gaston about six weeks and is already proving a popular addition to the staff there. “The students have been working really hard and I thought it would be nice to have an early Thanksgiving dinner so we could spend some time together,” Robinson said. As a teenager, Robinson had worked at a Food Lion and was aware of the company’s reputation for helping out in the communities they serve. So she contacted the store on Perfection Ave. in North Belmont. The manager of that store, Rebecca Ries was happy to pick up the turkey leg and run with it.

Duke Energy has awarded $200,000 in impact grants to Gaston County organizations, helping uplift the community through education, job training, environmental preservation and other needs across the local area. Duke Energy representatives presented the funding to local leaders today at an event hosted by Gaston College, one of the recipients. TechWorks Gaston in Belmont was one of the recipients and received $20,000. “TechWorks Gaston is humbly honored to be one of six grant recipients for the Duke Energy recognition event at Gaston College,” said Terry Cox, TechWorks Gaston executive director.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Duke Energy Foundation, TechWorks is launching a new K-12 STEM program to engage youth in space exploration, robotics, coding, and virtual reality. This grant will help fund a project to build a simulated Mars Rover with middle and high school age kids and adults. Duke Energy has been very supportive of TechWorks Gaston over the past several years, and it’s greatly appreciated.” The other grant recipients are Catawba Riverkeeper, Gaston Community Foundation, Gaston County Schools, TechWorks Gaston and The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. Well, there’s a new addition to the family. It doesn’t say goo-goo or gah-gah or goo-chee-goo. It doesn’t slurp on a pacifier. It doesn’t wear one of those ungodly disposable diaper things. It doesn’t have four legs and pee on the carpet or yap or claw the furniture. What, in the world, can it possibly be you may wonder. How about an antique English farm tractor. A 1949 Ferguson TE20 to be exact. A bit of backtracking. Several years ago I discovered the 1939 Farmall F30 that my great grandfather Walter V. Smith bought new for $1000. It was used for decades on our ancestral Smith farm in Catawba Heights and was sold in 1971 to the Beatty family. Well, after many twists of fate it followed me home about four years ago and I got it running again. It was a monster and weighed 5000 pounds and had a hand crank and though I loved it the thing was like keeping an elephant in an apartment. Therefore, about a month ago the Farmall went to a new home in Alamance County where it now lives on a nice little farm and the new owner plans to fully restore it. The whole affair was very bittersweet and when Sharon and I went to the Heritage and Harvest fest in Dallas and I saw all the old tractors there I was so sad I nearly busted out cryin’. She told me I looked like a cat that had its tail ran over. I needed a smaller tractor. Correction. I didn’t need a tractor I wanted a tractor. Big difference with similar outcome. So, I sniffed around and found a little one in Cat Square. It was listed as a 1950 Ferguson. I went and looked

Items on the menu included a huge roasted turkey, a baked ham with pineapple rings, three pies, dressing, green bean casserole, baked mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, rolls, and drinks. The tantalizing aroma from the feast filled Robinson’s classroom and had everyone salivating. The kids wasted no time digging in. “It’s the best turkey I ever ate,” said student Nolan McCorkle. Fellow classmate Joshua Penninger had this to say –“I’m really happy they did it.” Another student, Shaniya Mitchell, heaped her plate full. “It’s delicious,” she said. After the feast, everyone kicked back and let their food settle, knowing they had ex-

I had an appointment to go see a new customer Expedia Cruises in Belmont, and in the process of conversation with owner Adriana Phillips she asked me where I was from so I told her from Cuba and I had moved to North Carolina from New York. To my surprise not only had she had moved here from New York as well but we discovered we had lived in the same neighborhood for many years and that she had gone to the same school, Immaculate Conception, that my brother Jose had. Well that night she looked at her yearbook from 1977 and sent me a picture of one of her closest friends and to my surprise and disbelief it was Jose. I truly almost cried. Right away I contacted him and he couldn’t believe it either. A couple of weeks later she had her ribbon cutting for her new business and Jose and I both went. My goodness what an amazing reunion their seeing each other after 44 years. Yes what a small world!” Jose- “When my sister Mayra called me and told me that she had met one of my friends from school in New York I was truly amazed and almost in shock, then when she told me who she was it was very emotional to me. Adriana was the one person that helped me the most with my school work since at that time my English was almost zero. As a kid back then I probably never thanked her for all she had done for me so this reunion was that much more special since I was finally able to tell her the huge impact she made in my life. I also brought my year book to the ribbon cutting because she never signed it so she did so that day. Now I hope we can continue this friendship for many years to come. Members of the Belmont Historic Preservation Advisory Board, Historic Belmont Foundation, and the new property owners gathered recently to celebrate the installation of the historic landmark sign at Belmont’s most recently designated historic landmark. The Charles T. and Beatrice Chafin Stowe house was built between 1932 and 1935 and is a remarkable example of Tudor Revival style architecture. The house, located at 304 S. Central Avenue, is highly intact with many of its original exterior and interior building materials still in place. This was the home of Charles T. Stowe who is credited with saving Belmont Hosiery Mills after it struggled through the great depression. Gaston County Health Department December is here…buckle up to take time to smile this holiday offering Covid-19 vaccine boosters ByTheLisalastHarper month of 2021 is upon season. Maybe even breathe a little. The Gaston County Public Health Department will offer booster shots for the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. Individuals do not need to get their booster dose at the same location where they received their initial vaccinations. In addition, individuals can get a different brand of the vaccine than they received the first time. An individual wishing to receive their booster shot should bring their vaccination card with them. If you have lost your card, you may be able to retrieve your vaccination record by visiting https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/ vaccines/after-youve-beenvaccinated/your-vaccine-information.

The booster doses at the health department will be available on a walk-in basis from 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:304:30 p.m. at its location at 991 W. Hudson Blvd. Drive-through boosters are available through StarMed at the Gaston County Jail Annex parking lot, at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and West Walnut Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and through Kintegra at the Highland Health Center from 8:30 a.m to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to the CDC, individuals should be at least six months removed from getting their last dose of the Moderna or the Pfizer COVID19 vaccine before getting a booster. Those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should be at least two months removed from their initial shot before obtaining a booster. In addition to booster shots, the Health Department is also making preparations for the anticipated approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. The Health Department is slated to receive 1,200 doses of that vaccine in the initial shipment from the state and is making plans for a separate clinic for children. More details will be released on the vaccination rollout for children once final federal approval is in place.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Nary By Dennis Siracusa My friend, Gary, told me recently how busy his schedule was but funny thing is, as a real estate appraiser, he sets his own schedule. We rush about our work or recreation, bustle children to endless activities, or absorb ourselves in internet, social media activity or news that has little relevance to our lives personally. We nary invest quality effort in valuable living. Why should anyone care what Kim K. wears, imported news hype, or that a lightning strike happened far away? Why do we get drawn into such trivium; how about spending our efforts blending Godly character like love, gratefulness, resourcefulness, selfcontrol and wisdom into our lives. What’s important? If we believe; really believe we evolved from a slime pit over billions of years then all the above questions require nary another thought. If creation is true and God exists and holds us accountable for our actions and words, then let’s quit ignoring Him and place the proper perspective on our choices; ignoring God is rebellion. God chose Israel as His own to demonstrate His character and capabilities to the world. Even with all the miracles they witnessed and their interaction with God, Israel still veered off course and deviated from God’s guidance over and over. When they admitted they had seriously messed up and were in desperate need they confessed their sin and repented; and God forgave them. Then they waited a short time after suffering their punishment and sinned again and the cycle has repeated itself until their final rebellion hung Jesus on the cross. Still today, do we do better dealing

with our sin? Do we seek God’s direction or go our way, just like Israel? Confronting sin in our lives and living by Jesus’ example is hard work; in fact it is impossible in Dennis Siracusa our strength. John 15:5 is very revealing as Jesus tells us, “Yes, I am the vine and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Jesus is the architect of creation; He spoke everything into existence and His powerful words hold all of creation together. We can only learn to be holy and work within His plan, through His guidance and empowerment. In Dallas Jenkin’s new multi-season movie, The Chosen, about the life of Jesus, he displays a fictional but likely peek into biblical history with plausible details in and around biblical events recorded of Jesus’ earthly life and ministry. For instance, he shows the terrain and weather in that area. We see how fanatical the Pharisees were about rejecting Jesus, His miracles, and teachings. We see how they probably brushed their teeth and lit fires. We see how tired they all got; particularly Jesus after healing 150 or more people in a day. We get a glimpse of how and when the disciples understood the first arrival of the Messiah wasn’t about a military revolution against Israel’s oppressors but demonstrating love, spiritual power, and service. In our busyness we don’t think about this enough but this is the essence of life.

South Point beats Crest in 34-27 OT thriller By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com

You have to hand it to the South Point Red Raider football team, they sure have a flair for the dramatic. For the second time this year the Red Raiders beat a Big South 3A rival in a game decided in overtime. The first time was in October when the Red Raiders beat Forestview 17-14 in a double overtime brawl. The second win came on Friday night when South Point pulled off a spectacular 34-27 post-Thanksgiving playoff win against Crest. That win propelled Big Red into the 3A Western Finals of the North Carolina High School Athletics Association Football Playoffs. Going into the game the stakes were high. The Red Raiders were on the road playing against the fourth seeded team in the West 3A. A team the South Point had narrowly lost to earlier in the season. To win South Point would need to play hard, limit their mistakes, and let come what may. For the most part South Point stuck to their tried and true ground attack. But in a bit of a change the Red Raiders passed the ball more against Crest than they had in the last four games combined. In the first half the Chargers and Red Raiders were evenly matched. Yet despite the parity South Point managed to build a small lead and went into the half with a slim 17-13 advantage. In the third quarter there was little scoring, but South Point managed enough offense to get Charlie Birtwistle in range for a 27 yard field goal to increase the Red Raider’s lead to 20-13. While things were looking good for South Point going into the fourth that all changed when Crest got it together and made their move. In a matter of minutes the Chargers scored back to back touchdowns to take a 27-20 lead. With those TDs it looked like the Chargers were now in the driver’s seat and about to put the game away. However, in the final minutes South Point roared back with an offense onslaught that included an impressive 32 yard Elijah Phifer to Ashton Harris pass that kept the chains moving. With time running out Phifer took the ball in for a touchdown with only 10 seconds on the game clock. After a successful Charlie Birtwistle PAT the game was tied up at 27-27. This one would be decided in overtime. As the overtime began the Red Raiders got the ball first and needed but three plays before Phifer dashed into the end zone yet again. This time from five yards out. When Crest got their shot

they just couldn’t get it done. An untimely penalty and some tough play by the Red Raiders defense put the Chargers in a hole. The Chargers playoff hopes died when Crest quarterback Nytavious Huskey threw a pass toward the end zone that was tipped a few times before being snatched by South Point linebacker Ryan Harris to end the game. What a game. Crest may have lost but they went down swinging. Like the Red Raiders, Crest relied heavily on the run but didn’t hesitate to put the ball in the air when needed. On the night the Chargers would finish with 297 yards of total offense. Overall South Point put up some impressive offensive stats. The Red Raiders ended the game with 400 yards of total offense. South Point quarterback Elijah Phifer had an evening to remember. Phifer went four for six for 86 yards in the passing department while on the ground he gained 90 yards off of 21 carries with two scores. Tyson Riley and Cam Medlock put in some solid work as well. Riley finished the night with 113 yards and two touchdowns while Cam Medlock had 10 carries for 90 yards. Charlie Birwistle delivered a strong performance for the Red Raiders special teams unit. Birtwistle hit two field goals and four PAT kicks. He also showed some leg on kickoffs with a 59 yard kick off average that included four touchbacks. Jaquis Rumph was a one man tackling machine on the defensive side of the game. Rumph registered 18 stops. He was joined by Matt Hastings, Shane Wilson and Ryan Harris who all ended the game with double digit tackles. The win over Crest was definitely an awesome way to wrap up the Thanksgiving weekend for South Point. “I’m just proud of our kids and coaches,” Coach Adam Hodge said. “We battled for four quarters and then some. The kids played their tails off. Now we get to play another week, hopefully we will get another one.” This week the Red Raiders face another tough game when they travel to Greensboro to take on the Mid-State 3A Champion Dudley Panthers. Dudley is definitely going to be a tough nut to crack. The Panthers are a good football team that plays well on both sides of the ball. A review of Dudley’s schedule show that the Red Raiders and Panthers had two mutual opponents during the 2021 campaign. This year Dudley and South Point both played Kings Mountain and East Guilford.

The Panthers and Red Raiders both beat East Guilford. As for Kings Mountain, Dudley beat the Mountaineers in the playoffs while South Point fell to KM 24-7 in an early October matchup. The event featured performances by all high school marching bands. Fifth grade students at W.B. Beam Intermediate participated in a career awareness healthcare activity, which was coordinated by the school district’s Career and Technical Education program. The W.B. Beam Intermediate student council sponsored a holiday food drive and collected items for the St. John Lutheran Church community food pantry. Belmont Central Elementary received approximately 100 books from South Point High School students Dylan Nicks and David Nicks through their book donation project. Belmont Central Elementary raised $17,500 from its book fair, and the proceeds will be used to enhance the school’s media center. The Belmont Central Elementary PTO held a beautification day at the school on November 7. The Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Walmart provided pumpkins for all Carr Elementary kindergarten students, who were able to enjoy a pumpkin patch experience at school and select a pumpkin to take home. Carr Elementary principal Dr. Rebekah Duncan and assistant principal Thomas Plecnik passed out candy and pencils during a Halloween event at the Historic Dallas Square. Carr Elementary hosted a Classroom Central mobile store for teachers on November 8. Twelve Chapel Grove Elementary teachers received grants from Pisgah ARP Church to support classroom lessons and activities for students. Chapel Grove Baptist Church and Lutheran Chapel Church are providing Thanksgiving Day meals for 20 families at Chapel Grove Elementary. The Gaston County Schools facilities department completed the installation of an outdoor classroom for Chapel Grove Elementary teacher Jozette Franklin. During the Cherryville High School and Bessemer City High School “pink out” football game, the schools raised money for two nonprofit organizations. Bessemer City High School donated $1,000 to Relay for Life and Cherryville High School donated $1,300 to the Atrium Health Foundation. Cherryville High School resource officer Jeff Henry was recognized by the Gaston County Police Department for Outstanding Service Within a Unit (for all school resource officers). Football players from Cherryville High School vis-

ited Cherryville Elementary and W.B. Beam Intermediate School and welcomed the students as they arrived at school. The Stuart W. Cramer High School Stagestruck Players presented “A Cemetery Walk Through Time” at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. Students gave tours through the cemetery and introduced tour participants to people from the past. The event served as a fundraiser for the school’s theater arts program. Stuart W. Cramer High School senior Zachary Willer won the 3A individual state championship in cross country. His twin brother Nicholas Willer took second place. East Gaston High School won three awards at the Somethin’ Pumpkin Festival sponsored by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Teacher Jill Lenox and her first period class won the grand prize in the cooking contest with pumpkin tacos. Lenox’s second period class placed first in the dessert category with a pumpkin spice dump cake and third in the main dish category with a savory pumpkin cornbread. Forestview High School student athlete Susan Christy was chosen as the NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award recipient for women’s dual team tennis. In addition, the girls tennis team won the western regional championship and placed second in the state in the dual team competition. Forestview High School senior Ria Patel was selected for the Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education recognition. Forestview High School senior Maggie Lu was chosen as the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s good citizen essay contest. Gaston Rhinos beat Combine Academy By Richard Walker/Gaston College The Gaston College Rhinos basketball team stays unbeaten. Despite trailing much of the second half, the Rhinos rallied to force overtime before pulling away for a 95-92 overtime victory over Lincolnton’s Combine Academy last Wednesday night at Gaston Christian gym.. Damon Davis (29 points, 10 rebounds) had his second double-double of the season to lead Gaston College (3-0), which hosts Lakeside Prep on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gastonia’s Piedmont Community Charter School in its next game. Kalil Camara (14 points, 13 rebounds) also had a doubledouble and Da’marco Watson (15 points) and Dee Merriweather (11 points) were other double-figure scorers. Merriweather’s 3-pointer from the left corner with 16.9 seconds left in regulation forced the extra period of a game in which the Rhinos trailed by eight three times in the final 8 1-2 minutes, the last time at 78-70 at the 6:36 mark. In the overtime, Gaston College limited Combine Academy to one of 10 field goal shooting, Watson’s driving layup gave the Rhinos the lead for good at 91-90 and Merriweather hit two clinching free throws with 2.0 seconds left.

gather with the whole family and enjoy a wonderful meal together, lovingly prepared. It’s a day for many to watch football and parades. It is just a time of contentment, and satisfaction. Thanksgiving is tied often to our satisfaction. If we are content, fulfilled, and satisfied, then we are usually very thankful for the life we have. In Genesis 13:5-17, Abram and Lot found themselves in a difficult position. Abram had left his homeland with his wife Sarai, and nephew Lot, to go to the land of Canaan. God had promised to make a great nation of Abram, later called Abraham. This nation would be Israel. As time passed, both Abram and Lot had been greatly blessed by God with many herds of livestock. The

herdsmen of Abram began to quarrel with the herdsmen of Lot, as they were trying to occupy the same territory. Abram, knowing they needed to separate, told Lot to choose the land where he wanted to go, and he would go the other direction. Lot chose the greener, wetter land of the Jordan Valley. Lot set his eyes on what he thought was better land, while Abram was content where God put him in Canaan. God carried out his plan for Abram in Canaan, and indeed made a mighty nation of him. Lot looked for something better, Abram was satisfied where he was. In our lives, it can be easy to look at life always in the negative. We look for a better life, more money, and other desires. Like Lot, we can set our eyes

on what we think is better. Don’t j u d g e where you are Rev. Trent Rankin in life by where you are not. Take time to look around and see all of the good things God has provided. God has put us all where we are for a reason, just as He had done for Abram. Live life to the fullest, enjoying what we have. True thanks will be seen in our satisfaction. As you look at your life, are you satisfied? If you are, I would imagine you are also very thankful for your life, and what God has given you. If you are not, take a look around you and see all the great things you have from God. We have much to be thankful for! OUR MISSION:
