Seventy years of Valentines Days... and counting By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1951 was a fateful day in the lives of Belmont residents Jack Page and Gearl Dean Russell. That’s because it was their first date- an event that eventually led to their marriage on August 19, 1953 and a lifetime together. “I first saw her in ninth grade science class and though what a good looking girl,” Jack says. “When I found out she was first in her

class I figured I wasn’t in her league.” Nonetheless, Cupid’s arrow struck. “Our first date was the Valentine’s Day sweetheart dance at First Baptist Church,” Gearl Dean said. The Belmont High couple was soon going steady- but college loomed. Jack went to Appalachian State and Gearl Dean to UNC-Greensboro. “We stayed true to each other while we were in college,” Gearl Dean said. When the Korean War

came along, Jack enlisted in the Army, and the couple decided to tie the knot soon after he put on a uniform. “We got married when I was home on leave from basic training at Fort Jackson,” said Jack. After college, they both became educators. Gearl Dean taught elementary school for 31 years. Jack earned a Masters degree in counseling and was the first school counselor in Gaston County. Along the way, the couple had three kids- Forrest (a Morehead Scholar), Martha (graduated from App. State in just three years), and Dan (a member of the NCSU Electrical and Computer Engineers Hall of Fame). They also have See VALENTINE, Page 4

Reid High School was an African-American educational icon in our area By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

February is African-American History Month and one of the most important parts of that story is Reid High School in Belmont. It’s been 103 years since Belmont’s Reid High for African-America students was founded- and just over 50 years since it was torn downbut the school’s memory still burns bright in the hearts and minds of all who attended it. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Belmont Parks and Rec. Department’s J. Paul Ford Center on Woodrow Ave. sees kids dancing up a storm and loving every minute of it.. The action is part of the dance classes there for kids aged 2-5 years that are taught by instructors Anna Edwards and Keeisha Law. The pair have been imparting their own love for dance into students and from the looks on the kids’ faces when they kick up their heels and put down their toes, it’s a win-win for everyone. “I am very impressed that both Anna and Keisha have so much passion and knowledge on teaching and performing dance routines,” said Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe. “The Recreation Department See DANCE, Page 3

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

What is Love? Part 2 of 3

Devotion

By Tony Marciano aries and God doesn’t. Still, we can express love as we learn it in bits and pieces; as we see our reflection in God’s truth and understand where our hearts really are and what Dennis Siracusa they are made of. Someone said if we want to discover what’s most important to us; what’s really of interest to our heart we only need to look in our bank books; see where we spend our money. Does it reflect a love, respect, and appreciation for God who we owe everything to, or are our financial activities dust covered like so many thick bibles in our homes; and what about heart material? Are our hearts honorable, noble, and devoted? Do we truly cherish our spouse? Do we love our neighbors as ourselves? Do we have enough noble fiber to ask ourselves how well we are doing loving others; by God’s standards not ones we self-construct? It’s astounding how pitiful our lives are when they largely circle around our personal desires. On Valentine’s Day as a kid, I remember a rhyme. “A kiss without a hug is like a floor without a rug.” Fanciful and memorable but it has a bit of merit too. How well are we protecting those we love practically and spiritually? As fathers, mothers, Grands, and Great Grands are we truly adding Godly love, protection and value to those Jesus directs us to love? How committed are we to asking the Lord for His assessment?

Best tips for skin and mask care By CaroMont Health While safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19 is on the horizon, it is important for every individual to continue practicing safety measures. A face mask is one of the best ways to help stop the spread of coronavirus. But if you’ve noticed that it also can also cause skin irritation and breakouts, you’re not alone. Caring for your mask goes a long way toward caring for your skin. Read our best tips for both below. Skin Care Tips Choose a natural fiber mask like cotton or bamboo. Natural fibers are more breathable and reduce the risk of irritation. Be sure your mask is clean. If disposable, use a fresh one as often as possible. If reusable, be sure to wash between uses. Wash your face with a

gentle cleanser before putting on your mask to reduce oils and dirt that may be trapped below. Using an oil-free makeup primer can create a barrier between your mask and your skin. It helps reduce friction and lessen irritation in sensitive areas. Wash your face again after taking your mask off and be sure to promptly wash your hands. Don’t forget sunblock to avoid tan or burn marks in areas that your mask doesn’t cover. Wash your reusable masks with a non-scented laundry detergent to reduce the risk of irritation on your face. Mask Care Tips Only use clean masks. If you are using disposable masks, throw away after each use. If you’re wearing a cloth mask, be sure to launder after

each use using a non-scented laundry detergent. Try to not touch your mask while wearing and wait until you are home to take your mask off. Wash your hands before taking off your face mask and only touch the ear loops. If your mask has filters, remove and throw away between uses. Put your mask directly into the wash or laundry hamper. If your mask is reusable, launder in hot water and dry on a high setting. Store your mask in a clean place.

Last year I had big plans for Valentine’s Day. We would go to my favorite Italian restaurant. I would drop my wife at the door and then park the car. When I entered the restaurant, I would pretend to meet this mysterious women at the bar and we would fall madly in love. We would then have a romantic dinner together. Unfortunately, my wife was sick in February. By the time she got well, Covid19 arrived and we never made it to the restaurant. In the first part of this series, I asked the question, “What is love?” It’s more than feelings. It is an act of the will. It is when we choose to love someone even when they are unlovable or can’t return the love back to us. In part two, I am adding the word “sacrifice.” There is a special bond between an Italian mother and her son. My mother was the first born in America. I am her only son. When I met my wife, I knew she was the one. We married a few years later. My mother was losing “her baby.” After my daughter was born. I remember my mother saying to me that my wife would take the food out of her mouth and give it to our daughter if she needed it. While it sounds gross, my mother was saying that my wife would do whatever it took to take care of our children. From that point forward, my wife and my mother had an incredible bond. She always lived within 15 minutes of us. Twenty three years ago, she moved in with us. We enjoyed the first thirteen years. Then, my mother started to forget. She repeated herself. She got up in the middle of the night to get dressed. She fell and fractured her hip. When she returned from the hospital, there was a hospi-

w e r e huge. We could not go away for vacation. It Tony Marciano took two months of organizing overnight coverage just to be gone for two nights. My wife sacrificed so my mother could have her wish, to die in her home. My wife made that wish happen. She gave of herself when my mother had nothing to give back to her. There were no warm, fuzzy feelings. It was the right thing to do. As my wife often said, “She deserves to live out her days in her home.” This was based on forty three years of relationship. Isn’t that what Christ has done for us? He sacrificed himself to be in relationship with us. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Last night I watched a DVD presentation called the Star of Bethlehem. It was technically way over my head. How could it not be; the heavens above us are huge; there are billions of stars in our own galaxy and billions of galaxies outside ours with billions of stars. And yet, even though all the heavenly bodies are infinitely complex and in motion they became partially explained and predictable by Johannes Kepler who revolutionized astronomy in the 17th century with his mathematical laws of planetary motion. What shocked me most was the revelation of God’s affection for us; for God’s grand design embedded in creation that not only points to His incomparable attributes, but the certainty that we are all parts of HIS unfolding love story. In Charles M. Sheldon’s book “In His Steps,” a love story was birthed; again by God’s design. Rachel had once rejected Rollin Page’s proposal but now, by page 140, found him a changed man in his new and profound devotion to the Lord. Because of that she became increasingly aware of what it means to be loved by a “noble man.” With Valentine’s Day upon us most of us are taking a few minutes to reflect on love and those we most ardently love. And yet, I wonder if any of us really understands the depth and breadth of LOVE. I ask because of two truths. 1 John 4:16 reminds us that “God is Love;” and Isaiah 40:28 says “The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.” So if God is love and is everlasting and infinite how can we really know what love is? After all, we’re created beings. We have bound-

tal bed in her living room. She slept there the next eight years until the day she died. Since her death, I read at least 50 articles on individuals with Alzheimer’s. It’s a brain disease. There is no cure. The individual gets worse and then levels off for a while. You think this is their new plateau and then they get worse again. A new plateau and a new normal. Over the past eight years we were counseled to put my mother in an assisted living center. We had a family meeting where it was discussed. My sisters did research on various places to put mom. While my sisters planned to move her there, it was her daughterin-law, my wife who would figuratively throw herself in front of the door stating that her mother-in-law was not leaving this house. My sisters backed down. Don’t think this was easy. My mother deteriorated from using the toilet to a porta pottie to diapers. The bed sores

DANCE From Page 1 is happy to bring their dance skills to the community. You can see some of their dance moves on City of Belmont Recreation Facebook page.” Edwards is from Charlotte and earned a Bachelors in dance and performance at UNCC in 2018. In 2019, she went on to earn her Masters in dance from Hollings University. From there she taught dance at various venues until joining Belmont Parks and Rec. last August. “My favorite style of dancing is contemporary which is a blend of ballet and modern,” Edwards said. “I also enjoy choreography.” Edwards talked about her role as a dance instructor in Belmont. “I think it’s important to have a program that’s accessible to the public,” she said. “It’s a great outlet for the kids and a means of self expression and creative decision making.” Law is from Mt Holly and earned her Bachelors in dance from UNCC in 1995. Before coming to Belmont, she taught dance at a variety of places including Latta Dance at Spirit Square and Gold Hill Missionary Baptist in Lucia. Like Edwards, she began her work with Belmont Parks and Rec. in

August. “I love modern dance,” she said. “I feel like dancing is important for self expression and the students get to do that in our classes. The kids say they really enjoy it.” Law has these words for parents. “I would tell any parent interested in signing their child up that the kids not only learn dance, they also learn interpersonal skills and develop friendships with the other students.” The Parks and Rec. program has around 50 students total. The next sign up won’t be until August, but there’s the possibility of a summer camp before that. In the meantime, current classes are held in a Covidconscious environment. Edwards, Law and the kids wear masks. The floor is cleaned before classes start and the students take frequent water and hand sanitizer breaks. VALENTINE From Page 1 six grandkids and five greatgrandkids. Both Jack and Gearl Dean have what might be called “inquiring minds” and this quality has formed the basis for many of the activities they have enjoyed together over a span of seven decades. Together, they’ve traveled extensively over Europe and America. “We’ve been to every state except a few in the Great Lakes area,” Gearl Dean said. Jack is a Renaissance man of sorts and his interests run the gamut from local Native American archaeology, to beekeeping, to being a founding member of the Belmont Historical Society. For her part, Gearl Dean is an ac-

complished quilter and seamstress. Other activities the pair have enjoyed includes visiting shut-ins and volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program. These days are challenging for everyone, and for retirees like the Pages who spend a lot of time together at home, they are especially “interesting”. Nonetheless, both folks have easy going personality and with such a long number of years together are managing quite well. “We exercise every day,” said Jack. “I paint and she works on quilts. We keep in touch with people on the phone.” So, you are probably wondering by now, what’s the

In 2018, Reid High School alumni held a huge parade to celebrate what would have been the school’s 100th anniversary. Photos by Alan Hodge

REID From Page 1 The school was started in 1918 by Professor Charles Jesse Bynum Reid and Mrs. Maude Reid. The school first held classes in a small building on Sacco St. in Belmont. The school was called the “colored or negro school”. Later, the school would be named “Reid School” in honor of Professor Reid who was the first principal. The school would grow and offer high school classes and take on the name of “Reid High School”. Students that attended Reid School came from as far away as South Gastonia. Some walked as far as five miles to attend classes. Others rode in an old vehicle that had been converted into a makeshift bus. Reid School grew and by the 1940s was expanded to include high school grades. The school sports nickname and mascot was the Rams, and students excelled on and

off the athletic field. Graduates included artist Juan Logan, political activist Ron Leeper, Belmont civic leader Elsie Grier, and many more. When schools were integrated in 1966, Reid High was closed and its students sent to Belmont High School. Reid alumni held a series of events in 2018 that culminated in a grand celebration in September. The evolutionary journey of Reid High School (1918-2018 / “100 Years”) was directed by the Reid High School Alumni Association under the presidency of Mrs. JoAnn Bowens Holmes, a 1956 graduate of Reid High School. “Reid High (encompassed in Reid School / Grades K-12) was closed in 1966 and totally demolished by 1968,” said Holmes. “So we as alumni have no physical building that we can go to. This place where we

were given an excellent education is physically gone, but we carry it in our hearts and memory always.” Previously, in 2016, the City of Belmont proclaimed the “Year of Remembrance of Reid High School”. That same year saw a large number of Reid High alumni and supporters converge in early September for what was dubbed the 50th Anniversary Grand Reunion. The reunion marked 50 years since Reid High was demolished, but the tone of the event was one of celebration and pride by those who went there during its heyday. Heading up the excitement was a big parade honoring the school. The parade formed up at Davis Park and wound its way to Reid Park where a pep rally and picnic lunch was held. The Belmont Historical Society also featured a display of memorabilia by the Reid High Class of 1960.

Gaston County resident Gwendolyn Harrison Smith paved the way for African American men and women seeking higher education. Smith spent most of her life in Bessemer City, and was the first African-American woman to attend UNC Chapel Hill in 1951. At that time she was Professor of Spanish at Johnson C. fill their need for color, texture, and interaction with their landscape. Feeding birds can really turn into a good wholesome hobby for the entire family. There are three main choices in food: large seeds, small seeds, and suet. Large seeds include black-oil sunflower, striped sunflower, safflower, peanuts, shelled corn, ear corn, and cardinal mixes that contain sunflower, safflower, and peanuts. Birds that love sunflower seeds include Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, BlackCapped and Carolina and Black-Capped Chickadees, House and Purple Finches, American Goldfinches, Evening and Pine Grosbeaks, Gray and Steller’s Jays,

The Ba n ner News Lottery is this si mple! Last week’s lottery numbers were drawn by Sunny Graske at Glenway Premium Pub located at 55 Glenway Street, Belmont, NC. The winning numbers were 3, 13 & 25. No ballot received guessed all three numbers correctly, so the jackpot will remain at $10,000 until it’s won. Make sure you have your entry in by the 9am deadline on Monday for your chance to win!

Northern Cardinal Nuthatches, Crossbills, and Tufted Titmouse. Peanuts provide a nutritious diet for birds, including Black-Capped Chickadees, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, and Blue Jays. Even Northern Cardinals will come to a peanut feeder. However, these feeds also attract mammals including squirrels and raccoons. Safflower seeds are not as attractive to these eating machines. Cracked corn and milo are attractive to house sparrows and starlings, which will discourage other birds from visiting your feeders, and are not recommended. Small seeds include millet and Niger thistle. Millet sprinkled on the ground or in tray feeders will attract darkeyed juncos, mourning doves, and American tree, fox, Harris’, white-throated, whitecrowned and golden-crowned sparrows. Niger thistle will bring American and lesser goldfinches, common and hoary redpolls, house and purple finches, and pine siskins. Many wintering birds also benefit from suet, suet mixes, and peanut butter, including pileated, red bellied, red headed, downy and hairy woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches. Water is critical to overwintering birds. Including a heated birdbath in your feeder set up will be an open invitation to a variety of birds. Don’t worry about birds freezing if they bathe on a cold winter day. This

water is primarily for drinking. Include a variety of feeders; open or covered platform feeders, suet feeders, and cylindrical feeders will be attractive to a broad variety of birds. Place feeders close to protective cover and convenient for viewing from a window. The best feeder sites are downwind from the shelter provided by conifers, ornamental grass plantings, brushy shrub, or buildings. To avoid giving raptors or cats an advantage in catching birds, feeders should be at least 10 feet from the nearest cover where such predators could hide, like trees and deck railing. Use several feeder clusters of three or four feeders per cluster and a ground feeding site. Each cluster should include a variety of feeder types that offer larger seeds, smaller seeds, and suet. Remember winter is a difficult time for birds. Days are often windy and cold; nights are long and even colder. The lush, berry-laden vegetation of summer and fall has withered or been consumed, and most insects have died or become dormant. Finding food can be especially challenging for birds during days with extreme cold temperatures. Setting up a backyard bird feeder makes their lives easier and ours more enjoyable. Just remember to clean feeders regularly to avoid spread of diseases between birds.

Gov. Cooper, state education leaders say it’s time for in-person instruction in K-12 schools Top state education leaders joined Governor Roy Cooper last week to call on K-12 school districts across the state to allow in-person instruction for all students. The Governor joined North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Secretary Mandy Cohen, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt and State Board of Education Chair Eric Davis to thank educators for their extraordinary work during an unprecedented time, to highlight ongoing research that shows that with proper mitigation measures, in-person learning is safe, and to emphasize the critical importance of ensuring all students have an opportunity to learn in a classroom. “Protecting the health and safety of the people of this state, especially our children and our teachers, has been our goal,” said Governor Cooper. “We know school is important for reasons beyond academic instruction. School is where students learn social skills, get reliable meals, and find their voices. Research done right here in North Carolina tells us that in-person learning is working and that students can be in classrooms safely with the right safety protocols in place.” Since the beginning of the

pandemic, state leaders have emphasized the importance of returning students to in-person learning as quickly and safely as possible. Children who rely solely on remote instruction are feeling the negative effects of isolation, including learning loss, mental health challenges and food insecurity. The state’s public health toolkit details specific health and safety protocols K-12 schools must implement to keep students and teachers safe during in-person instruction. “Even with the thousands of students and teachers attending school in-person across the state, we have seen few COVID-19 clusters in our public schools,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. “Our Department will continue to serve our school communities, offering resources and support so we can keep our school doors open.” Increasing evidence suggests that, with prevention measures in place, there are low rates of COVID-19 transmission in primary and secondary school settings even with high rates of community transmission. In addition, ongoing medical studies and peer-reviewed data affirm that children infected with COVID-19 generally have mild or no symptoms, and

are less likely to spread the disease. “Learning loss resulting from COVID has the potential to be a generational hurdle, but the data we have seen shows us that schools can reopen safely if they adhere to COVID prevention policies,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt. “For many schools, the logistics of returning to in-person instruction five days per week will be a challenge, but this is absolutely a challenge we must face head on so that all students have a chance to fulfill their potential. With strong prevention measures in place, and the scientific research to back them, now is the time to act. North Carolina’s students cannot lose any more time.” “We know that to equitably and fully address the needs of the whole child in every student, it is imperative that schools reopen for inperson instruction,” said State Board Chairman Eric Davis. “Since August, public school leaders have proven the merits of the safety protocols that have kept our schools safe for students and staff.” Governor Cooper, Superintendent Truitt, Chair Davis and Secretary Cohen sent a letter to local school board members and superintendents encouraging in-person instruction across the state.

Throughout February, the Gaston County Public Library will create Virtual Book Displays through Goodreads to celebrate Black History Month. The first installment celebrates black actors, directors, producers, and comedians. https://www.goodreads.com/.../21860217-black-history.

Schiele Museum Winter Wonderland The Schiele Museum, 1500 E. Garrison Blvd., has opened its newest, original exhibit Winter Wonderland. Winter Wonderland will be an adventure geared towards the youngest visitors to the museum as participants are urged to take off their shoes and sock “skate.” It was opened to the public on Saturday, Jan. 16th for just $3 per person and will be free for Schiele Members. Tickets can be reserved online in advance at SchieleMusem.org. The exhibit is currently scheduled to be open through March 2021. Winter Wonderland is fashioned to look like an outdoor pond that has iced over. The winter scene is complete with taxidermy mounts of deer bounding through the forest and other wildlife peeking at the skaters. Children up to age 12 will be able to kick off their shoes and skate off some energy, practice some ice skating techniques, or just enjoy twirls and sliding across the floor. As the coronavirus continues to be a concern for our community, The Schiele staff

wanted to provide a lowcontact experience for our youngest visitors to enjoy. An anonymous sponsor provided support to help make this exhibit possible. The Winter Wonderland experience will give children a way to exercise while having fun as families enjoy spending time together. The museum has also opened its weekly Friday Night Light programs scheduled through February. These special planetarium programs will be offered each Friday evening at 5 PM, 6

PM, & 7 PM and will give families, couples, and adults an opportunity to experience a planetarium program after hours. New programs will be available each week, from live star shows to science theater programs from across the national planetarium industry. Limited seating provides ample room for visitors to spread out and pick their favorite seats to enjoy the show. For more information, please visit schielemuseum. org or follow The Schiele Museum on social media.

Over the years as a father, one of the things I always say most to my children is, be good! Whether they were playing together, headed to a friend’s house, or going to church, I would always remind Rev. Trent Tankin them to be good. Now, I must say, I am blessed because my children are good kids. I want them to be good people in love with God, and all people they meet. We are now in the month of February, the month we celebrate love. Along with loving God with our everything, Jesus commands us, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, ESV). As followers of Jesus, we should always strive to be good, righteous people before everyone we meet, loving our neighbors. Paul writes in Romans 12:17, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all” (ESV). This statement by Paul probably seemed radical to his readers in a time when the Roman Empire was ravaging neighboring lands, people were not valued or respected, and followers of Jesus faced intense persecution. In a time of brutality and evil, Paul reminded people to be good people of peace. Today, we face a world that is also difficult. We live in an age of selfishness, pride, and betrayal. It can be very difficult to be a good person, living for Jesus in a time where most people are far from God, and even offended by you and your beliefs. Yet, this is the time for us to be peaceable and good. People need the light of Jesus that we represent in a very dark world. We cannot control others or their actions, but as much as it is up to us, we are to be good people of peace. Paul concluded Romans 12 with another powerful statement to his readers, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21, ESV). It can indeed be very easy to fall into the ways of our world. It is much easier to go along with the crowd, and attempt to fit in. However, our world is evil, and far from God. Our world, our neighbors, our communities need us. We can demonstrate God’s love to everyone we meet. We can be good, decent people, in a fallen world. Overcome evil with good. Overcome darkness with the light of the world, Jesus. Be good!

the Commissioners’ School program has not been determined at this time; the format will be announced this spring. What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century, when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.
