Belmont’s Larry Norwood was a Cold War warrior By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
During the 1950s the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union was one of the most tense times in history and Larry Norwood of Belmont was in the middle of it as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Norwood joined the 82nd at the tender age of 18 years. He served from 1957-1961. “I had a friend that was a paratrooper and I thought I wanted to try that too,” Norwood said. “I took my basic training at Fort Jackson and parachute training at Fort Bragg.” Norwood recalled his first parachute jump. “It was more or less the easiest since I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It was exciting floating down in dead silence.” Norwood soon found himself in Germany where the U.S. and its Soviet bloc protagonists were nose to nose. Damage from World War II was still in evidence in some places. “I spent over two years in Germany,” Norwood said. “We did a lot of training in bombed out buildings.” Given the political and military climate, the 82nd had to be ready for anything. “One time we were given live ammunition and loaded on our planes,” he said. “We flew around for
a couple of hours. Nobody was saying a word. You could have heard a pin drop. We thought we were going to have to fight. We eventually landed and got off. We never did find out what it was all about.” Norwood also got to see the German countryside. “It was beauti- Norwood as a member of the ful and there were 82nd Airborne Division in the late lots of quaint vil- 1950s. lages,” he said. Norwood also served in Alaska. “We learned how to snow ski on a big hill covered with straw at Fort Bragg,” he said. “In Alaska we had to camp out and it was below zero.” After he got out of the army, Norwood came home See NORWOOD, Page 4

Mt. Holly names new city manager By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The City of Mt. Holly has named Miles Braswell as its new city manager. Braswell had served as assistant city manager since April 2016. He was officially named to his new post by the city council on October 26 and his first day in the office as city manager was November 2. Braswell’s predecessor Danny Jackson recently retired after ten years as city manager and was instrumental in preparing him for his new post. “I had the pleasure of hiring Miles as the City’s Streets & Solid Waste Director in 2014,” Jackson said. “Miles performed really well at the position. I was then able to
promote Miles to assistant city manager, all due to his effectiveness and efficiency in the workplace. Miles and I embarked upon succession planning which has now culminated in him being appointed by the city council as the new city manager in Mount Holly. I am extremely proud of Miles for his hard and dedicated work as a city employee and my partner. Miles possesses the kind of skills that it takes to be successful in his new position. He is prepared to lead the City of Mount Holly into the next chapter of its future.” Braswell thanked Jackson for his support and guidance. “I learned so much from Danny,” Braswell said. “He’s been a mentor since day one. R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Keeping short accounts with one another By Tony Marciano When I was a kid, my mother was passionate about making sure the larger family of cousins, aunts and uncles always stayed connected. She organized the family to make sure we didn’t lose touch with one another. Labor Day was especially important as we gathered with cousins we don’t normally see. While they were a distant relative, they were family. As I started my own family, we worked hard to maintain the same traditions. As my children became young adults, they wanted to do other things rather than come over for a Labor Day cookout. I obliged, but it broke my heart. This past Labor Day, my middle child said he was coming over. I was elated. I don’t see as much of him as I’d like so this was important. But the day before the holiday, he changed his plans and wasn’t coming over to the house. A few days before, a friend of the Mission called me about a mother whose daughter was interested in enrolling in Charlotte Rescue Missions women’s program, Dove’s Nest. I told her to give her my cell number and she could call me anytime. Labor Day was hot. I’m trimming hedges. I don’t enjoy trimming the hedges. I’m not in a good mood. It was more like a Saturday than a holiday to me. Then my phone rings. It was the mother my friend talked to me about. She asked me to explain the program so she would understand what her daughter would experience. I didn’t want to talk to her or anyone else. I was annoyed about the hedges and that my son wasn’t coming over. While all this was swirling through my head, she kept pressing me for answers. Finally, I said to her, “It is all on our web page. Just go to www.char-

lotterescuemission.org and click on Dove’s Nest. It will tell you everything you want to know. She quietly said, “Thank Tony Marciano you, and the call ended. On Tuesday, I received the following email from my friend, “I wanted to apologize. I think I may have misunderstood something in our conversation last week about the mom and daughter I talked to you about. I thought you said I could have the mom call you to talk about it before her daughter called the admissions line. So I gave her your number and told her to call you and to let you know that she was the one I had told you about. The mother said she talked to you yesterday. I’m so sorry if I gave her incorrect instructions. I hope you’ll forgive me. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do about that. My sincerest apologies for that. I was speechless for a number of reasons. I had forgotten my commitment to be available to her friend. But more importantly, she followed the exact outline from Scripture when you are in conflict with someone else. It begins with, “If you have something against your brother, go to them. She did. She didn’t put me on a prayer list. She didn’t write me out of her life. She didn’t get ugly about me on social media. She came directly to me. She could have thrown me under the bus. Instead, she turned it around as if it were her mistake instead of mine. Perhaps the foundation for a good friendship begins by keeping short accounts with one another. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.
It’s a well-known saying; the whole “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life thing. Quite frankly, I can envision it being the truth. I can picture myself waking up to a new day, brewing a pot of ambition as Dolly Parton called it in “Nine to Five, getting dressed in clothes that actually suit me and won’t get ruined at the end of each day, and heading to my laptop to check a couple of quick emails before heading off to conduct the first interview for an upcoming piece in a new issue of the paper. However, that little angel and devil that rest upon my shoulders, giving me moral advice and acting as voices of reason (I’ll bet you didn’t know they’re actually cohorts rather than enemies), they come along with their big needles and are quick to burst my bubble. I’m sure by now that if you have read some of my previous columns, you know that my father was a workhorse. He worked day in and day out, through hot and cold weather, inside of industrial plants or on top of their roofs, leading a team of men each week to install duct work and ventilation systems so that others would be comfortable while they were working. Can you believe we are now in November? This year certainly has been long, and now we find ourselves just a few short weeks away until Thanksgiving. This time of year always reminds us of just how thankful we should be, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day. Sadly, too often we do forget to be thankful, and we take for granted just how good God is to us ever day of our lives. Luke 17:11-19 records a time when Jesus was traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem and encountered ten men on the road. These men were suffering from the dreaded skin disease, Leprosy. This horrible disease was not only debilitating, but it also brought shame on the one suffering with it, as they had to shout to people passing by, “unclean! As these men saw Jesus, they began to cry out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us (Luke 11:13, ESV). Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priest, and as they did, they were completely healed. As they walked away, one of the men, a Samaritan, came running back shouting praise to Jesus. He fell at His feet and worshiped. Jesus asked where the other nine were, noting that only one man returned of the ten to offer thanks. These nine men were what we can be too often, ungrateNO MORE GUTTER CLEANING, OR YOUR MONEY BACK GUARANTEED! CALL US TODAY FOR

ful. As Americans, we are so blessed with so much. Even in today’s chaos with politics and pandemic, we are truly blessed by God. We have roofs over our heads, and food on our tables. God is certainly good. However, sadly we long for more, or Rev. Trent Tankin complain with what we have. The humble Samaritan in this story teaches us what we need most, a grateful heart. He recognized the significance of the healing he had received through Jesus, and he wanted Jesus, and the whole world to know how thankful he was. Perhaps we all need to take a moment and truly consider how much we have, and how good God has been to us. We have been healed of a dreaded disease too, sin. Jesus gave His life for us on the cross, forgiving us of our sins. He alone is worthy of our praise. This Thanksgiving season take a moment each day as you pray, to use that prayer time to offer praise and thanks for all that God has done and is doing. Like that Samaritan, let Jesus know how grateful you are!
would then come home and not only work on handyman tasks around our house, but my grandmother’s house as well! He did this for a good majority of my childhood until he was offered a position working as a local supervisor where he no longer had to travel anymore. He was finally able to stay at home with his family and I finally got to know my father better. I soon discovered that you can take the man off the road, but not the road out of the man. Every night for dinner it seemed as though he was eating the same meal repeatedly. He always had his assortment of Pork n’ Beans and potato salad on crackers and he was satisfied with that. I can also remember eating a lot of hot dogs at some point in time to switch things up. He still carried his lunchbox and small cooler but no longer had a company truck to drive and I remember times where I would go help him on weekends at the shop if he needed to pick up scrap metal for a project around the house. Things were great until the day came where he came home from work a little early. I believe it was the summer before my freshman year of high school and I was in my room playing video games. I heard the screen door open and make the distinct hissing sound just before it clapped shut. My father made his way to the kitchen, sat his things down, and went to his place at the dining room table. My mother greeted him, slightly confused and sat next to him. From my bedroom, I heard his
lighter ignite and clasp shut and the lingering s c e n t Shelton Fisher of his Camel cigarette eventually lured me out of my room. I knew something was wrong. He wasted no time. There was no sugar-coating. After twenty-six years of backbreaking, bone-weathering, sleep-depriving years on the road and serving the company, he was laid off. At that moment, I saw my father in an entirely different light. This was the most vulnerable I had ever seen him before and although I had no idea what this meant for us in the future, none of that mattered. I realized how much he loved his job and how much it had become a part of him, and I just wanted to make him feel better. So here I stand at twentyseven years old. I am not a supervisor by any means, but with every day that I slip on my steel toe boots and my scruffy blue jeans, I wonder how much longer I’m going to walk in my father’s footsteps. There have been days where I came home drenched in sweat, dying to peel the clothes off my back and days where I wake up feeling like I couldn’t hardly walk from being on my feet for so long. Just as my father did, I do it for my family, but I’m holding on to hope that one day I’ll do what I love. Phone 704-825-0580 Fax 704-825-0894 OfďŹ ce: 128-C N Main St. Belmont • NC

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him I think I heard Charlie Brown By Dennis Siracusa It’s mid-October-November; fall, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, my favorites, are on my doorstep. Our autumn flag is flying, fireplace smoke is in the air, winter pansies are planted, but…. what’s that… Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas have been blended together in box store floor displays; “Oh, good grief!” I’ve raked leaves for two weeks; a billion two days ago, but this morning I couldn’t see my driveway or yard; again. “Oh, good grief” I thought. I’m scheduled for a third battery of heart tests this week. My doctors are perplexed by my symptoms. I’m perplexed too because something isn’t right. They ask a litany of causal questions which I can’t answer. I rake leaves, cut down trees, build piers in crawlspaces, fix all sorts of broken things and have a healthy varied diet, yet my symptoms, while always the same, remain causally illusive; until today. I began a self-imposed cardio routine and thought I’d start with a 150 yard jog. My pain symptoms came on like gang busters. “Oh, good grief” escaped my lips. I sat myself down for an attitude check. This is my favorite season; it’s up to me to make it special. It’s my job to stop my observations of a painful or misguided world from running ram shod over my attitude. I constantly declare to God how grateful I am for all our towering trees which bless me with shade, adventure, and nature’s echoes. How can I let a few leaves turn me into a grump? And then there’s my health. Yes I’ve had some odd pain issues for two months but rather than grouse about it, I choose to be grateful for capable doctors and that I finally have something they can investigate. Imagine a life or even a day without grate-
Creating memories with dignity & respect
fulness. Today I was reflecting on three of my favorite words. I’ll share them in the order I apprehended them. Grace, God, Gratefulness. You probably can’t understand this but just typing Dennis Siracusa the words and reflecting on them brings tears to my eyes. I’m grateful “grace” found me in a dark British pub and introduced me to itself and God; my Creator. In Him I discovered a warm, loving, capable God who wanted to be my friend and who wanted to guide me onto a sure path of success; a unique path He created for me, surely as He has uniquely created yours for you. In Romans 16:4, Paul lauds Prisca and Aquila for risking their own lives for him and for the whole Christian church. Most of King David’s psalms reflect a profoundly grateful heart toward God and when we think about gratefulness and thanksgiving, doesn’t it make sense to direct it somewhere; somewhere deserving? I’m grateful to live in America and grateful for our founding fathers incalculable sacrifices to form the foundation of our liberty. Most of all I am grateful that the God I serve was their bedrock, strength and inspiration. All our benefits, in America, and everything good around us has been an act of HIS wisdom and grace. 2 Corinthians 4:15 says it best… “All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.” Let’s choose not to borrow words from Charlie Brown but to “shout joyfully to the Lord and enter His courts with praise.” (Excerpts from psalm 100 NIV).

Slow down before speaking Many exclaimed, “I can’t wait for the elections to be over.” I can relate to what they were feeling. I was tired of the negative campaigns, the negative ads, the negative words back and forth between candidates and society. It is often said, “Do not discuss politics or religion.” The reason this statement is made because there can be volatile reactions as a result of the conversations. When did we lose our decorum and decency in a society where we can no longer have rational discussions? We may not always agree, but it doesn’t mean I can no longer enjoy an enlightening conversation. Even when I don’t always agree with what is being said, I still learn. Today, when there is disagreement, the results are often negative comments, namecalling, and much worse. How will you choose your words? Will you choose words that will bring death or give life? “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 NKJV. Consider the words that are used. Does it contain bitterness, condemnation, judgment? Or do our words bring hope, blessings, and peace? Our words impact our environment. And the Proverb says we too will eat the fruit of our words. Meaning, if we speak death, words of bitterness, and condemnation, we will bear the consequences of our words that bring death. If we speak life, hope, and blessings, we will bear the consequences of our words that bring life.

Words can draw us together or pull us apart. When we turn on the media, we hear words that can tear apart our community. Rev. Angela Pleasants As a result, mistrust District and alienation have Superintendent of Catawba Valley become the norm. I challenge each Methodist Churches of us to become our own Broadcast Media. Speak the words of hope, truth, and compassion that will change the environment in which we live. Slow down and take a breath before speaking. Words reveal the condition of our hearts. If bitterness flows from our lips, then search the heart. It could be within our heart is a root of bitterness over a matter. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Proverbs 147:3 NKJV. Only God can help our hearts heal from deep wounds and hurt. Therefore, consider our heart motives and words before they are spoken. The words that come from our heart can reveal areas where we need to repent, heal, and grow. Our words can be a fountain of life. Therefore, wisely choose what you will say. “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” Colossians 4:6 NKJV.

ists, submitted ideas and concepts. The committee loved the concept that Terry Rhyne submitted. Terry was not a muralist so the committee asked if I would paint her design on the wall. Of course I had no problem at all with that. The wall is red brick. The size of the mural is 8’ x 20’. I used exterior grade Latex paint. The sunflowers on the right side are special to a family there in Mount Holly. The artichoke on the left side was painted from a photo of artichoke that was
in the garden a few years back. I have been painting murals for 20+ years. My style is to be somewhat realistic. 90% of my murals are in public school systems. I learned many years ago that murals need to speak to the audience very quickly. This Mount Holly mural is bright, fun, very colorful, thought provoking, and ties into the Garden perfectly. I think Terry did a fantastic job with the design of this mural. Please visit my website at boycemckinneymurals.com.”

The men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories. Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on November 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. • Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. • Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. • Ask your company if Veterans Day or Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women. • Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home. Armistice Day, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day are great ways to honor past and current military for their service and sacrifice.

Women Who Rock Award Winner: Sam Woods Sam Woods is a Certified Medical Assistant and has been a part of the Kintegra Health family for 12 years now. Sam has never failed, or even hesitated, to join the precarious, yet critical, frontlines in the battle of preventing and protecting our communities against COVID-19. During this overwhelmingly exceptional time that we’ve all had to experience with COVID19, and with all of the uncertainty and organized chaos that are associated with it, the fortitude, tenacity, and courage that she’s had, and continually displayed, in terms of her wide-ranging clinical knowledge, her compassion, and her ability to teach, have allowed her to excel, and even stand out in doing so, during this pandemic. For perspective, Sam has worked count-
less hours in helping Kintegra perform over 10,000 Covid19 tests. In response to all of the aforementioned, Sam was recently promoted to Clinical Support Specialist. In her new role, Sam will now be responsible for educating clinical staff and ensuring evidencedbased care throughout the Kintegra organization. Sam serves as an active member of Gastonia’s Flynt Groves Baptist Church. She very proudly embraces her Lumbee American Indian roots, which has graciously translated into a devotion to her community, and a character well-versed in compassion, teaching, and healing. Knowing, understanding, and witnessing the talent, skill, and commitment with which she carries herself easily makes

Tri-County Animal Rescue Pets of the Week are: These two little Chihuahuas are Comanche and Cheyenne. They are 10 months old and weigh under 10 pounds. Comanche and Cheyenne came to us because their owner had health issues and could not care for them. Comanche has short hair and Cheyenne has longer hair. They are super sweet and loving. They get along with other dogs and all people. They do not have to be adopted together. Comanche is neutered and Cheyenne is spayed. They are heartworm negative, current on rabies vaccine, current on other vaccines and micro-chipped. Come out and ask for Comanche and Cheyenne. This is Choo Choo with the big ears. She is a Chihuahua and weighs about 10 pounds. Choo Choo came in with Comanche and Cheyenne so she likes other dogs to play with. She is 2 years old and will not get any bigger. Choo Choo can be shy at first meeting you but warms up quickly. She just wants to cuddle. Choo Choo is spayed, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Come meet this beautiful girl in person and you will fall in love. This big puppy is Mango. He is a Golden Retriever mix. We also have his brother Tango. Mango has the longer hair and Tango has shorter hair like a Lab. Both boys are around

Trent Sims earns Teacher Hero of COVID-19 award Ashbrook High School chemistry teacher Trent Sims knows that the Little Free Libraries located at schools across the county serve as “food for the soul and for the mind” for students. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit North Carolina in March and schools were closed for in-person instruction, Sims and his wife, Katie, worried about food to fill the stomachs of students who would no longer be at school to eat in the cafeteria. The couple jumped into action, deciding to turn the Ashbrook Little Free Library, an outdoor resource center for books, into something more. The two went to Sam’s Club and bought as much food and snacks as they could. Then, they filled the library with food in an effort to make it available to the
community. “At the beginning of the pandemic, we realized we would be out of school for the foreseeable future,” Sims said. “My wife and I had all the resources we needed, but we realized there were students in our community who were going to struggle and that really hit home for us.” The project gained traction around the county, and Trent and Katie were soon asking for donations and filling Little Free Libraries at Highland School of Technology and Gardner Park Elementary School. Trent’s involvement in the project led to him being named a weekly “Teacher Hero of COVID-19,” a recognition program sponsored by FSI Office, HP, and the Carolina Panthers. “It was a big surprise,”
Sims said. “I had colleagues who nominated me and that is such an honor. Being able to bring recognition to Ashbrook and to Gaston County is really important to me. Sims said that he and Katie both love to read and enjoy being able to stock the Little Free Libraries with food and books. For being nominated as a “Teacher Hero,” Sims received a large box of practical items like sanitizer, masks, and school supplies. When he earned enough votes to be named a weekly winner, he was approached about the $1,000 prize being split up into $750 for school supplies and $250 to go toward purchasing food supplies for the libraries. He said the decision was easy. He also found out he would be attending a Caro-
lina Panthers game with two free tickets. At the game, he competed with six weekly winners and was announced as the overall winner. This time, the honor included Panthers merchandise and another $1,000 for Ashbrook High School. While the prizes are wonderful, the Gaston County native and Highland graduate said he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received for the project. “It’s been amazing,” Sims said. “I’ve been getting notifications and texts and emails. I couldn’t be more thankful for my support system.” Dr. Rebecca Wilson, principal at Ashbrook High School, said it’s been great to witness the outcome of the Little Free Libraries’ conversion to a place for free books

and free food. “Trent Sims has created a real, visible change throughout our community,” Wilson said. “Through all the difficulties our students have faced during this challenging time, they always knew the pantry would be stocked. Mr. Sims has truly been a beacon of hope and encouragement for our students and for the community.” And the recognition isn’t over yet. The final prize involves the Panthers’ mascot, Sir Purr, which Sims said is generating lots of talk around school. He said the classroom virtual visit may be-
come a school-wide virtual visit. Throughout the project, Sims has found it important to remind his students that the project isn’t about him, but instead it’s about making a difference when you can. “It’s easy to sit back and let someone else do the work,” Sims said. “It can begin with me, but it shouldn’t end with me. Pay it forward, and it comes back to you. Our Little Free Pantry idea had a snowball effect where people were willing to step up and do the work in their community as well. That’s what it’s all about.”

Keeping a positive attitude is on the menu for cafeteria manager Marie Beard Marie Beard encourages students to always keep a positive attitude no matter what challenges arise. It’s advice that the cafeteria manager at Forestview High School knows well. Beard, who is serving in her 17th year as a cafeteria manager in Gaston County Schools, began her school nutrition career when her husband was diagnosed with cancer. Working in school cafeterias, she was able to have a job and still care for her family. Beard is familiar with the ins and outs of running a school cafeteria. Graduating from Ashbrook High School in 1981, she worked at Hunter Huss High School
as a cafeteria assistant. She also has served as the cafeteria manager at North Belmont Elementary, Page Primary, and Hawks Nest STEAM Academy. While her day-to-day duties vary from preparing meals to delegating assignments and monitoring food safety, Beard says her favorite part of working in the cafeteria is getting to see the students. “It is a pleasure to serve meals for our students,” she said. “I love getting to interact with them and to watch them grow each and every day.” It’s a trait that Forestview principal Crystal Houser says makes Beard stand out. “Marie truly cares about our students at Forestview
Marie Beard High School,” she said. “She and her staff work tirelessly to ensure our students’ nutritional needs are addressed, and she goes above and
beyond every day for our school. Best of all, she always has a good attitude and keeps a positive outlook.” Houser said staying posi-
tive is important during challenging times such as the coronavirus pandemic. She has watched Beard and her staff make adjustments to their daily routine – changes that have been necessary in an effort to always do what is best for students. All cafeterias in Gaston County Schools have a sanitation rating of at least 98 percent, giving them an A+ grade for making sure that meals are prepared in a healthy and safe environment. Beard takes particular pride in the 99-point score at Forestview High School, knowing that she and her colleagues are looking out for the students and staff while preparing breakfasts and lunches. It’s
a responsibility she doesn’t take lightly. Having served 25 years in local government and state jobs – Beard previously worked for the Gastonia Police Department for more than seven years as a telecommunications supervisor – she knows the importance of making a difference in the world around you. Beard is grateful that she gets to make a difference while managing the cafeteria at Forestview High School. And as for her favorite meal? That’s an easy one. “The oven-roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans,” she says with a smile.

Isabella Benavente (#3) scored three goals as the Belmont Abbey women’s soccer team earned a 4-3 victory over Spartanburg Methodist. How It Happened: SMC scored first, in the 15th minute, but Mackenzie Lewis evened the score just three minutes later.
