Fuel spill on Catawba River brings out fire and hazmat crews A truck accident and the resulting fuel spill around 9am Monday morning on the US74 bridge over the Catawba River in Belmont brought a swift response from area fire departments and hazmat teams. The teams deployed oil absorbing booms across the river and then removed the fuel. Traffic on the bridge was reduced to one lane in both directions for several hours. Responders included Belmont Fire Department, West Mecklenburg Fire Department, City of Charlotte Fire Department, City of Gastonia Fire and Hazmat and commercial hazmat removal personnel. Gaston County Tax Office sends out annual property tax bills The Gaston County Tax Office mailed out more than 120,000 property tax notices on August 6. The tax bills are mailed directly to property owners responsible for payment. Property taxes are due September 1, 2021. To avoid interest charges, property tax payments must be paid on or before January 5, 2022. North Carolina law directs that “payments submitted by mail shall be deemed to be received as of the date shown on the postmark affixed by the United States Postal Service. If no date is shown on the postmark or if the postmark is not affixed by the United States Postal Service, the tax payment shall be deemed to be received when the payment is received in the office of the tax collector.” Payment envelopes received on January 7 or later and affixed with a USPS PitneyBowes or similar postmark will be deemed received late based on the date actually re-

ceived in the tax offices. Property owners whose payments are postmarked on or after January 6, 2022, will be charged a 2 percent interest penalty for the month of January and an additional ¾ percent every month, or portion thereof, thereafter until the bill is paid in full, including interest and any other statutorily allowed fees or charges. All unpaid taxes are subject to be advertised in the local newspaper and an additional advertising fee will be added to each bill. Property owners may choose to pay taxes online at www.gastongov.com. To pay online, property owners may visit the Gaston County Tax Office home page, listed under County Services, and click on the Pay Online icon. Online payments will require the property key number shown on the actual tax bill or the bill number listed on the online Tax Bill Search page. A non-refundable convenience fee will be charged

for all electronic transactions. To pay by phone, dial 1-855-976-3866. The property key number will be required for payment by phone. Property owners paying by check and money order may also choose to use the convenient drop box located at the right rear entrance of the Gaston County Administration Building (128 W. Main Ave., Gastonia, NC 28052). Gaston County Tax Collections will also be moving in the near future. After successfully utilizing the drivethru tax payment option beginning last fall, we will be continuing that practice at our new location at 100 E. Garrison Blvd., in Gastonia. Joy Lee Bagwell Weaver Umatilla, Florida Mrs. Joy Lee Bagwell Weaver, 81 of Umatilla, FL passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Born in Bel-

mont, NC on April 10, 1940 and was the daughter of the late Paul and Lela Garrett Bagwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Robert Weaver and her daughter, Cheryl O’Berry. She was an elementary school teacher at Altoona School and Spring Creek Elementary. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Umatilla and served as an Elder for many years. Joy was a graduate of Belmont High School, Class of 1958. She is survived by her son: Paul (Jennifer) Weaver; grandchildren: Evelyn Weaver, Brittany, Matthew and Nathan O’Berry, and son-in-law: Sean O’Berry and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive family and friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Holly police chief Don Roper was among the groundbreaking speakers. “We are here because Tyler Herndon was a fine young man,” Roper said. “This memorial will show service, sacrifice, commitment, and connection to community. It will be a rock and a source of comfort to our police department and our community.” The plaza has been in the planning stages for months.

Earlier this year, the City of Mt. Holly formed a committee to explore ways to create the plaza. The committee was appointed by Mayor Bryan Hough. It included local officials and citizens including Bobby Black, Miles Braswell, Melanie Black, Phyllis Harris, Jeff Meadows, Randi Moore, Paige Sigmon, Cindy Suddreth-Williams, David Sisk, Brian Reagan, and Don Roper. The committee met with design and engineering specialists David Malcolm and Nick Lowe with the Charlotte-based design firm Mc-

Gaston Schools to require face coverings Monday evening, August 16, the Gaston County Board of Education voted to require face coverings/masks for people inside school buildings and central office buildings. The requirement is for students, employees, parents, and visitors while they are inside a Gaston County Schools facility regardless of vaccination status. The requirement goes into effect immediately and continues through September 20 when the Board of Education meets again and plans to review the decision. Factors that contributed to the decision include the high transmission rate of the COVID-19 Delta variant and

the high COVID-19 positivity rate in Gaston County. Additionally, wearing face coverings/masks indoors is expected to reduce the number of students/employees who are required to quarantine when there is a confirmed case.

The concept was presented to the city council on March 8 and approved. The Memorial Plaza will be stunning in its appearance. In addition to extensive landscaping, it will feature a statue of a police officer holding a child. There will be benches where folks can sit and reflect. There will be an eternal flame. There will be a memo-

rial wall. Blue lights will be a prominent feature. These will represent the police department but also recall the hundreds of blue lights that people in the Mt. Holly area displayed and still display in remembrance of Herndon. People will be also able to purchase memorial pavers similar to those at the Mt. Holly Community Garden. Mount Holly Police Officer Tyler Herndon. will be remembered in other ways. A five mile stretch of Hwy. 273 between I-85 and the Freightliner factory has been designated as the Officer Tyler H. Herndon Memorial Highway. The route is one that Herndon often patrolled. N.C. Rep. John Torbett helped expedite the highway’s designation- a process that can sometimes take a year but in this case was

passed through the N.C. General Assembly in just a couple of months. Also, a delegation of MHPD officers will attend the National Police Memorial Service event on Oct. 22 in Washington, D.C. where Herndon’s name will be unveiled on the wall there. East Gaston takes first steps to better future By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com

Last year the East Gaston Warriors made another coaching change. Coach Lippard moved on and EG turned things over to former Tuscola coach JT Postell. Postell inherited a very young and inexperienced team. Last year East Gaston went through some growing pains but still managed to go 2-5 in the Southwestern 2A. Considering the fact that the Warriors started the year with a new staff, a new system, and next to nothing in the way of an off-season due to COVID that wasn’t a bad record. Postell’s young players now have a year of varsity ball under their belts going into 2021. It’s fair to say that over the last few years EG has struggled to win games and be competitive. New schools, a shrinking student population, and competition for players from private schools have made things difficult for East Gaston. Whatever the Warrior’s misfortunes have been there a no excuses as far as coach Postell is concerned. Postell understands that there’s nothing they can do about the past. However, what happens in the future is something they can control. The coach is determined to get his players focused on the here and now. “I think you need to pour your soul into where you are,” coach Postell said. “I’ve stressed to the players that nothing is

easy, and nothing is given to you. We accept that and are working hard to establish pride and a sense of community.” Coach Postell believes that he’s got a captive audience. The players are hungry and are up for the challenge. “We need to do things the right way,” Postell added. “This is a great group of kids I’ve enjoyed coaching them.” Going into this season the Warriors have a lot to work with. But on the bright side, EG has 16 returning starters on this year’s roster. Offense Run and pass Coach Postell will call the plays as the Warriors deploy a hybrid shotgun double wing/spread offense. The East Gaston offense may be a pass-friendly system but look for the Warriors to stress the running game. “We have two good wingbacks and a good tailback,” coach Postell said. “We’ve worked on our passing game as well. We’re not afraid to throw the football.” Lining up at quarterback will be 6’3” 170-pound sophomore Trenton Sherrill. Sherrill is a multi-sport athlete who brings a lot to the table. “He’s very mature,” Postell said.”He also has a strong arm.” Lining up at tail back will be All-Conference running back

Justin Hill. Justin Hill is another multi-sport athlete. “He’s a tough between the tackles runner,” coach Postell explained. “He was also the Southwestern conference 100meter dash champion.” East Gaston’s wingbacks will be Markel McKinney and Nehemiah Stovall. Both wings are good athletes and tremendous runners who can also come out of the backfield to help with the passing game. The East Gaston tight ends and receivers are asked to focus on blocking. Look for Maddox Emery and Jaxson Cogdal to vie for playing time. “Both guys do a great job for us in our running game,” Postell added. “Both are also capable receivers, and every so often I will throw them a pass play.” The Warriors receivers are Aiden Cloninger and Mario Rodriguez-Vidal. Cloninger and Vidal are capable perimeter blockers and solid receivers.The staff is very excited to have Cloninger back after breaking his foot in February. “He is a big weapon for us,” coach Postell said. “We’re glad to have him back.” East Gaston will be returning four starters to their offensive line. The coaching staff believes that this group has grown more than any other position group. The Warriors believe that their linemen now have the experiences needed to get the job done. There’s lots of competition for slots. It’s a place where guys can gain playing time.” Kicking duties will be handled by Luis Nunez.Look for Mario Rodriguez-Vidal and Trent Sherrill to compete for punting time. Kick return duties will be handled by Justin Hill and Nehemiah Stovall while the punt returns slots will be manned by Shane Goins and Mario Vadell Rodriguez.

EAST GASTON From Page 3 slots will be manned by Luis Nunez, Jake Fox, and Payton Parker. The outside linebackers are led by 5’11” 155-pound All-conference junior Ben Summey. Summey is not just a good linebacker, he is a solid leader “We have challenged Ben to be more vocal,” coach Postell stated. “He has accepted that challenge.” Look for Summey to be the guy that motivates the EG defense. The other outside linebackers are Aiden Cloninger and Chase Johnson. The East Gaston defensive backs are another group of players that were green last year and had to learn on the fly. Last year’s baptism by fire should pay huge dividends this year. Three starters are returning for this season. The corners are led by senior Shane Goins. Goins is an All-conference wrestler whose skills on the mat should translate into making him a solid tackler. The other corner slot will be manned by Mario Rodriguez-Vidal. The safeties will be Trevor William and Clay Harper. East Gaston is another team that is stressing special teams. “We take special teams very seriously,” coach Postell noted. “We practice it daily.

Final Outlook This is going to be an interesting year for East Gaston. The recent North Carolina High School Athletic Association NCHSAA conference realignment may have worked to EG’s favor.The Warriors are in the new Southern Piedmont 1A/2A. This blended conference will feature a wide array of teams ranging from powerhouses such as Shelby and Burns to local teams such as Bessemer City and Cherryville. So what does that mean? Well, if the players keep their heads on straight and continue to develop East Gaston should be competitive.This year EG opted to go with a tough non-conference lineup including games against South Point, Cramer and 1A powerhouse Cherokee. The early going could be tough but that kind of competition should pay off when East Gaston starts playing their conference games in late September. The Warriors open the season on August 20th at North Gaston.

At South Point it’s about tradition and execution By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com

South Point ended their final season in the Southwestern 2A with a 5-2 record highlighted by a 28-16 win over our arch-rival Shelby. Despite the strong showing, the Red Raiders didn’t get a playoff spot due to the rules associated with the modified COVID playoff format. While there was definitely disappointment in Belmont no one is dwelling on it. With the much-anticipated move back to the Big South 3A now a reality Big Red is ready to roll. Red Raider football is steeped in tradition. Old school tradition. Change doesn’t occur just for the sake of it. At South Point, if something works they stick with it. The Red Raiders aren’t blindly loyal to tradition, they understand that from time to time adjustments need to be made. They also know that nothing worthwhile comes easy and you need to be prepared to deal with adversity. Head coach Adam Hodge looks at the Red Raiders old school tradition as the key to the school’s success. An example of that old-school mindset can be found in the old chair sitting at coach Hodge’s desk.If you walk into the South Point

field house you’ll find an old wood and red vinyl chair. sitting at the coach’s desk.By all accounts, the chair has been at the field house for as long as anyone can remember. The chair’s vinyl is cracked and faded. It creaks when you move around in it. Heck, from time to time one of the wheels even falls off. Yet despite the chair’s age coach Hodge refuses to replace it. In many ways, the chair is a symbol. It represents tradition and adversity. Hodge won’t replace the chair because in his view it gets the job done. When a wheel falls off Hodge bends over, sticks it back in, and keeps going. That old chair serves as a daily reminder that from time to time we all have to deal with adversity. “Sometimes you just have to put the wheels back,” Hodge said. Going into 2021 Red Raiders are ready. This year South Point has 14 returning starters. Coach Hodge and the coaching staff can work with that. “You never want to replace too many people,” coach Hodge said. “I like those numbers. I want a good healthy mix.” Offense The Redbone, what else? Coach Josh Justice returns as a South Point offensive coordinator. He should have a lot to work with this year. Many of last year’s offensive starters are returning so the offense should be potent. “We have four linemen our tight end and starting fullback back,” Hodge added. Once again the Red Raiders will line up in the triple option “Redbone” offense.

Look for South Point to try to establish the run early and dominate the line of scrimmage. Of course, the Red Raiders have no problem changing things up depending on what defenses give them. “We will take what they give us,” coach Hodge stated. “But we’re going to do what we do.” And what South Point does is run. The South Point offense isn’t fancy and it’s not flashy. But it’s effective. The Red Raiders are very good at moving the chains. South Point is successful because the coaches and players believe in the system and they know how to execute. Without execution, nothing happens and the wheels fall off. “It’s all about execution no matter who you have,” Coach Hodge stressed. “If you execute well you give yourself the best chance to be successful. If you get four yards you won’t have to punt.” Defense Don’t let them score. When coach Hodge was asked what his defensive philosophy was he grinned and laid it all out in the simplest of terms. “Don’t let them score,” Hodge said. The coach’s philosophy is blunt and to the point. It’s also pragmatic. Once again the Red Raiders will go with a 4-2-5 multiple. The Red Raiders version of that defense is designed to be fluid and flexible. Bryan Adams will be the Red Raiders, defensive coordinator. See SOUTH POINT, Page 6

Look for the South Point defense to be stingy this year. Last year the Red Raiders limited opponents to 19 points or less on four occasions. Like the offense, the Big Red D has a lot of experience returning. “This group is bigger, faster, and stronger than last year,” Hodge said. When the Red Raiders are on defense look for South Point to move in and out of different looks based on what their opponent is trying to do. The South Point defense is very good at adapting. Pregame planning is important to the Red Raiders. Going into every game the coaching staff has a plan and a backup plan. “You have to have a plan,” coach Hodge said. “But you have to have a plan for when the plan changes.” As for the players, the coaching staff doesn’t want them overburdened with game planning. The coaches want them to focus on their job assignments. “You have to know what you’re doing,” coach Hodge said

of what’s expected of his players. “They need to line up and read and react. We need to play fast, play relentless and get to the football.” A lot goes into getting ready for a game. The players know what’s expected of them because of the positive input they get from the coaching staff. Coach Hodge thinks a lot of his coaches. “They work hard,” Hodge said. “They watch a ton of film and they always get our kids prepared.” At South Point, there is also a lot of emphasis on special teams. When Coach Hodge thinks about special teams he thinks back to his early days of coaching when coach Phil Tate stressed the importance of the kicking game.It’s something that Hodge never forgot. “If you get an onside kickback or block a punt it could change the game,” Hodge said. Spots on the Red Raiders special teams squad are hot commodities. “Many of the starters will line up for kicking downs,” coach Hodge added. “Good players want to play special teams. They want to be on the field.” The South Point special teams are coached by James Justice. Coach Hodge has a lot of faith in his special team’s coordinator.

“He is super organized,” Hodge said of Justice. “He does his homework. He does a good job with it. Predictions Red Raiders are back home in the Big South 3A. It’s a conference South Point is very familiar with. It’s also a conference the Red Raiders have done well in over the years.Many of the teams in the Big South have fine football traditions. That’s something the Red Raiders can relate to. “There should be some exciting games,” coach Hodge said of the Big South. “There are some good teams in this conference. I’m glad we’re back.” South Point has a legit shot at a conference title. But a title will not come easy. To get there the Red Raiders are going to have to deal with some tough teams. Especially Kings Mountain and Crest. Of course, the Red Raiders will also need to watch their backs with every team in the conference. If South Point doesn’t bring it every week there are other dangerous teams in the Big South like Stuart Cramer and Ashbrook looking to pick them off.

Cramer hopes to rebound in 2021 By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com

2020 was a rough year for the Stuart Cramer football team. In last year’s COVID shortened season Cramer went 1-6. The Storm’s lone win came in a 56-6 thumping of the North Gaston Wildcats. While head coach Ben McMillan wasn’t thrilled with how 2020 went down he is optimistic about this year. As it turns out coach McMillan may have every reason in the world to be upbeat. Cramer doesn’t exactly come into 2021 with the cupboards bare. In fact, the Storm have some real talent to work with. This year Cramer has 12th starters returning. Offense It’s air raid time. Last year the Storm ditched the Pistol

Wing-T and decided to go with the “Air Raid” offensive scheme. The results were promising. Cramer runs their offense out of the shotgun with a single back. Look for the Storm to work with a host of multiple receiver packages. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson will be calling the shots for the Cramer offense. “We’re going to throw the ball a lot,” coach McMillan said. “We have always done some of those concepts, but this year we really dug into the details and nuances.”

All-Conference stand-out Justin Rocquemore will return at quarterback. Roquemore is a dual-threat quarterback. He is capable of running and passing with equal efficiency. “He is the leader of our team,” McMillan said. “He does a good job running the offense.” Roquemore is a top-tier talent. He presents opposing defenses with a real dilemma. Do you play the run, or play the pass? Roquemore has the skill set to torch you either way. “He can make the throws for our offense,” coach McMillan added. “He can scramble or do designed quarterback runs.” The Cramer offensive skill positions will be manned by a hard-working group of committed players. This crew isn’t flashy, but they can get the job done. “They are not the fastest or biggest,” McMillan said, “But they are good route runners who find a way to get open.” Junior Nate Britton lines up in one of the

receiver slots. At 6’4” Britton gives Rocquemore a big target to look for. Britton isn’t the only player looking for action. If defenses key on him they may miss 5’8” sophomore jitterbug Isaiah Johnson. While Britton and Johnson should be productive the Storm offense is also looking for solid work out of Dameian Bentley, Tyler Ward, and John Hill. Upfront the Cramer O-line consists of players that don’t possess a lot of varsity experience. However, what this group lacks in experience they make up for with determination and hard work. Senior Joey Heath is the only returning starter and will line up at left tackle. Seniors Colby Green and Shad Wooten will lock down the left guard and center slots. Look for 6’3” 318-pound sophomore Jacob Brindle to line up at right guard while junior John Adams McClendon holds things down at right tackle. See STUART CRAMER, Page 10

Rounding out the defensive line will be seniors Kenneth McAllister and Johnny O’Shea. McAllister will line up a defensive end while O’Shea is set at defensive tackle. Cramer’s top linebacker this season will be 5’ 10” 175-pound senior Josue Sanchez. In the Cramer scheme, Sanchez will line up in the “Mike” linebacker slot. Sanchez should be exciting to watch. He is described as a high-energy player who moves around a lot and has a real nose for the ball. The Storm defensive backs are a solid blue-collar group of players. In Cramer’s 4-2-5 system look for the safeties to sneak up and play as hybrid linebackers to solidify the run defense.The safeties are led by junior Daimean Fernandez. Fernandez is an athletic player who continues to improve each day. Senior safety Markiss Nelson is a new addition to the Cramer roster who comes to Stuart Cramer from Wisconsin. Nelson should bring some real speed to the defensive backfield. Cramer’s free safety is 5’10” 140-pound junior Ethan Ward. Ward is a smart player and a solid center fielder. He should have no problem holding down the back end. Cornerback Frank Thomas is a top contributor as well.

Defense Stop the run. Defensive coordinator John Putnam will be tasked with running a defense that will have to face the run happy teams that make up the Big South 3A. To get the job done Cramer will employ a 4-2-5 scheme. For the most part, the Storm defense is an experienced group loaded with senior leadership. The Storm defensive line should be the strength of the defense, if not the team. The “D” line will be led by All-Conference senior defensive end Arias Nash. Nash is a 6’2” 245-pound monster that should present a problem for opposing offenses. “Nash has all the tools,” coach Putnam said. Lining up at nose tackle will be 5’9” 280-pound senior Amir Waddell. Waddell is a player who has improved dramatically in the off-season. The coaching staff hopes will be a big contributor.

Thomas has shown the coaching staff that he can play at a high level. “We think he’ll have a good year,” coach McMillan said. The Cramer special teams will feature senior punter/ kicker Nick Wilson. Wilson is a talented player with a strong leg who has attracted interest from several D1 schools. Final Outlook 2021 could indeed be a rebound year for Stuart Cramer football. Cramer has some real blue-chip talent on the roster. If players like Rocquemore and Nash deliver and others step up to fill in the gaps the Storm could be dangerous. It must be noted that Cramer plays in one of the toughest conferences in the state. Each week will be tough. For the Storm to make a real dent in the Big South they will need to be productive every week with little room for error. With that said, if this team lives up to its potential Cramer should nab a playoff slot. Stuart Cramer will kick off the 2021 season at home against Bessemer City on August 27th.

The cafeteria also has a stage for performances and other events. It’s dubbed a “cafetorium”. A modern library and media center will serve as the heart of the school and is located near the main entrance. One nice feature of the inside are the skylights that let natural light flood in. In this respect, Belmont Middle is similar to the new Stanley Middle School where skylights are an important architectural feature. Indeed, Belmont Middle’s floor plan is similar to Stanley, but is “stretched” to accommodate more students. Sports are an important part of Belmont Middle and the new school has superb facilities for them. Out back, a nice brick concession stand and press box overlooks the football field and a paved running track. Bleachers will be ADA accessible. The school also has two baseball diamonds. The gymnasium is huge and the floor features the BMS Wildcat logo. There are

four basketball goals and plenty of seating area. Here are some more facts about the new school. The new Belmont Middle School is an investment of approximately $40 million. Beam Construction Company of Cherryville is the builder, and LS3P Associates the architectural firm. LS3P also designed the new Stanley Middle School, which opened in March 2018. Beam Construction also built the new Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia, which opened in August 2017. The new two-story school features more than 155,000 square feet of space and will be able to accommodate 1,000 students. The core areas of the school such as the cafeteria and gymnasium are built to accommodate 1,200 students to plan for future growth. Also, grades will be separated by wings, with the sixth grade on the main floor and seventh and eighth grades on the second floor as well as administration areas on each floor; separate bus and vehicle entrances with more than 200 parking spaces and a pick-up lane that is able to accommodate 100 cars; maximum use of natural light and energy efficiency throughout the school. The school was paid for with a $250 million bond referendum.

2020 Hall of Fame – Scottie Holden By Kathy Blake Think fast… Got a second? This wrestling match is over There is a word used in the South for the act of shoving work and responsibilities aside in favor of freely and nonchalantly being idle with time. The word is “loafering,” a version of “loafing,” which simply means going slowly at one’s own pace, elsewhere, with no regard for obligations, or clocks. Scottie Holden, as an athlete, was not one for loafering. A wrestler at Stanley Middle School and East Gaston High School in the mid-1980s, he was quick – sometimes excessively quick – and left opponents pinned before they had time to get their strategy adjusted. On your mark, set… match over. During Holden’s junior year in 1984, East Gaston Coach Doug Smith complained about, of all things, how fast he finished his matches and got back to the bench. “He got on to me, because my first 22 matches was first-period pin. And he kept telling me I needed to go into the second or third round, because when I got to State it was going to go longer,” Holden says. “So my State final that I won, I did it in 1 minute 38 seconds.” Smith coached East Gaston from 1978 through 1991, a year that ended in a state title. He knows a bit about timing. “He was one of the most physical wrestlers I ever coached,” Smith says. “He physically beat up everyone he wrestled. He pinned three out of four at the State Championships, and he pinned a kid in the finals who was about as physical and tough as you’d see.” Holden wrestled before North Carolina high schools were divided by attendance size. There wasn’t any 1A, 2A, and so on. Everyone was in the same batch. “In later years, they split schools into four classifications, but with him, there was only one state champ in each weight class. Back in that day, you had to go through everybody to win, and he was the first to do that.” Holden won his state title at 108 pounds. Being quick, and athletic, helps when you’re the little guy. “I got started in wrestling with my brother, who was a year and three months older than me,” Holden says. “And, don’t laugh, but we were both small-framed and we played Little League baseball, him as a left-handed pitcher and me as a catcher. And when we got to middle school our stature for being ball players was not equivalent to what was needed.” So Scottie and Jerry joined the wrestling team. “I won the county championship all three years,” Scottie Holden says. “Seventh, eighth and ninth grade, I won every year. My brother was close to the same weight class, and we pushed

Scottie Holden each other; we drove each other hard.” Having a brother along helps in transitioning to high school, too. “When you go from middle school to high school, you’re already nervous and scared, and when you’re on the starting (wrestling) team as a ninth-grader, and you’re competing against 11th- and 12th-graders, it’s definitely a challenge. He was my motivator. We pushed each other.” Holden’s accomplishments as an athlete and later as a coach led to his induction in the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. “I never even thought of it before,” he says. “I never looked for any publicity. I’m just me. Worked hard all my life.” That junior year, 1984, was a year for work. Holden says he’s the only East Gaston wrestler to win a true state championship, when all state schools competed without divisions. “There were 15 weight classes, but you had 25 or 30 people on a team. If your record didn’t allow you to qualify for Sectionals at the end of the season, you didn’t go,” he says. “The first round, there were 16 in each weight class and if you got beat you was done.” Holden was quick away from the matt, too. If making weight was an issue, he could drop it like … now. “When it was needed to lose 10 pounds during school, I had gotten out of class to lose weight… back in the day,” he says. “I could lose 10 pounds in a school day to compete. The plastic bags, the sweats… I’m glad they don’t allow that now.” Holden’s senior year, 1985, didn’t go as planned. “I got sick and I had ruptured a blood vessel in my stomach, but I still made it to State,” he says. “My doctor advised me not to go, but I went anyway. I was too weak, and I lost out.” Still, colleges took notice. Chattanooga, Winthrop, GardnerWebb, and he thought a long time about making the move to Tennessee. “But I didn’t go,” he says. “I think that, in a way, if your mindset and heart isn’t in it, don’t do it. That is not a sport where you can get help, like

have someone tackle someone or whatever. It’s a team sport, but it’s individual. So if your mind and heart is not in it, don’t pursue it.” Holden pursued coaching, instead. He was an assistant at Stanley Middle before he coached Mount Holly Middle School in 2002 and 2003, first as an assistant then as head coach. “I led them to their first championship title for Gaston County. Mount Holly had a team for 17 years and had never won,” he says. “I just wanted to work with the kids. I wasn’t interested in being in front of anybody. There’s a lot of kids I’ve coached through the years in Mount Holly, good kids.” His son, Scottie Holden Jr., took over competition duties for his dad. “My oldest son went through Mount Holly and never had one point scored against him. I was amazed,” he says. “Never seen that before in my life. To see anyone in middle school never get one point scored on them. “We won some matches 96-0, a perfect score. I told my team, I didn’t think that had ever been done in history. And the second year I coached, we beat another team 96-0. “Scottie was a born-andbred wrestler and started in the fifth grade, and we were actually invited to a tournament in Randolph County, and they invited our AAU team in Mount Holly,” Holden says. “My son was in sixth grade and beat an eighth-grader for the 80pound weight class, and he only weighed 68 pounds. The kid from Randolph, his daddy was the head coach, and they had won the championship in that county for the last three years. But Scottie was 10 to 12 pounds lighter, and he beat him by decision. “It was a big upset. I ran out on the matt and picked him up and hugged him. I didn’t care if I was disqualified or not. He also won a championship in seventh and eighth grade and was MVP for the Gaston County tournament.” Looking back, Holden credits his parents – Jerry Holden Sr. and Helen Holden – and his children, his girls Tiffany and Carmen and sons Scottie and Calen. And his brother, Jerry. And Kirk

Wells, the East Gaston assistant coach. “He was great with kids, and he pushed us more in a way like a comedy-type coach,” he says. “He made practices great.” Holden left the sport for a role with Hoechst Celanese’s Mount Holly facility, mostly working with Oil of Olay production that sent bulk product to Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati. He says he put in

“29.83 years, and retired and built a big shop behind my house.” He can be found, most days, out back in that shop, working on a FedEx truck for Mutschler, Inc., which contracts throughout the southeast for FedEx Ground. He’ll do the maintenance, change out a transmission, service the vehicles. He’s quick to solve issues and take care of business.

But if he’s not there… he may have gone wandering to reminisce about how he’s worked hard all his life. He’ll be back soon. He’s just off somewhere loafering. This keeps children off the road and out of traffic. • Something is dropped – If a child drops something while walking to the bus, they should not pick it up. They should notify the bus driver and follow the driver’s instructions. The child may not be seen by the driver if they bend down and pick up the object. • Look before getting off the bus – Bus riders should look to the right before disembarking the bus. Drivers sometimes try to pass buses, illegally, on the right. • Waiting for a bus rider – Parents should wait for their child on the side of the road that the child is dropped off. If a bus rider must cross the street to meet their parent, they might be excited about seeing them and forget to look before crossing the road. 2020 Hall of Fame – 1992 East Gaston Wrestling By Kathy Blake No Time to Lose East Gaston wrestling doesn’t let change interfere with State title The year is 1992. The Olympic Games are in Barcelona, Spain. Bill Clinton is elected president. Jay Leno debuts on “The Tonight Show,” and IBM introduces a laptop, the ThinkPad 700C. “Barney & Friends” premiers on TV and, in better news, the Chicago Bulls win their second consecutive NBA title. In Mount Holly, the East Gaston High School wrestling team – which graduated six members, including four 1991 state finalists and underwent a coaching change – patches its pieces together and wins another Class 4A state championship. “It was one of those things we wanted to continue and defend that title,” says Cain Beard, a junior 112-pounder. “We had a legendary coach (Doug Smith) retire, and we were young and had to kind of mesh together. It took a lot of adjustment, because of our having been used to doing things a certain way. And this new coach comes in, and we had to get to know each other and figure it out.” The new coach was Bryan Lingerfelt, who at 23 was on the borderline of being a peer vs. being authority. And Smith, who led the team to a 22-0 record and Class 4A state title the year before and had coached for 13 seasons, was still in the building, down the hall. “I was just a young coach that was hoping to help young men and East Gaston,” Lingerfelt says. “I saw it as an opportunity to help. The success we had I’m sure was unexpected, but that is what made it so special and what made these young men special that season.” “Coach Smith was still teaching at the school, and all of us would go talk to him about strategy, but it was awkward for us,” says Beard, who coached as several high schools before taking his current role in 2008 as head coach at Rock Hill High School. “It was an awkward situation (for Lingerfelt) to follow a legend. When I got

to Rock Hill, I heard about how great the teams were in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and I kind of get the feeling of what Bryan must have felt. I know Bryan heard it from us: ‘That’s not how it was done!’ And I heard it at Rock Hill.” Lingerfelt was a studentteacher as East Gaston in 1990 and helped coach football. He was hired at Surry Central High School after graduation from Appalachian State University in Boone, then was asked to return to East Gaston to coach wrestling for 1991-92. For what it accomplished in 1992, the wrestling team is inducted into the Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame. The group went 14-1, the only loss coming at Ashbrook in the regular season – an outcome that was reversed in the state finals. “Ashbrook and us, at the time, were the two premier programs in the area, and we went to their place and had to deal with some lineup issues – I don’t remember what it was – and we took a loss,” Beard says. “And sometimes a loss is a good thing. I’ve always said as a coach, if you go undefeated I need to make the schedule tougher.” On the bus ride home, he says, the team pondered how to use the loss to their advantage. “Our goal as a team was not so much to avenge the loss but to put yourself in a position to win a state title. And we had done that, that night. We were going for our third state title.” “I remember that bus ride as being quiet. I remember some guys crying,” says Brent Harrelson, a junior who wrestled at 171. “Whether we wanted to admit it nor not, Ashbrook was a very tough match. They were our rivals, and there was mutual respect, whether we wanted to admit it or not. It was important to beat those guys, then all of a sudden we had this mark on our record and we thought, we can’t do this.” “The loss did bring the team together,” Lingerfelt says. “I believe Bart Davis may have said something to rally the guys. Losing to Ashbrook hurt their feelings, and they could have gone the other way as well, but they had a ‘tradition’ they wanted

1992 East Gaston Wrestling Team to continue.” The Warriors beat Ashbrook 47-13 in the state Western final on February 6 to advance to the 4A dual-team title. It was Ashbrook’s first loss of the season. On the night of the state final title match vs. Eastern winner Orange High (23-2), from Hillsborough, Beard says the term “three-peat” was “being thrown around. The (Chicago) Bulls didn’t do theirs until the next year, but the term was out there. And it was on our mind.” “There was a certain standard we held ourselves to,” Beard says. “It’s about putting ourselves in a position to win a state title. That’s what we do. All of us understood how we had to do it, getting everyone mentally prepared and on the same page to be in that situation.” East Gaston won 30-25. “Before the match, we said don’t let anybody come in here and take it from us,” Lingerfelt said after the win. “That’s all I tried to do, keep the tradition of the program going. I just tried to guide it along.” Following Harrelson’s pin at to give East Gaston the lead, Bart Davis (189) clinched the victory with one match remaining with a 10-5 win, making an Orange comeback mathematically impossible. “Wrestling at a higher weight, especially toward the end of a match, is especially stressful when it’s close,” Harrelson says, “and all you can think of is, don’t let your nerves get in the way of what you’re trying to do. And that’s what it was.” Orange took a 6-0 lead
