Beautiful downtown Lowell is about to get even more beautimous with the creation of a “pocket park” on a currently vacant lot at the corner of W. First St (Hwy. 7) and N. Main St. The park will be called McCord Family Park which is fitting considering the town will be leasing the property on a year-to-year basis from the McCord family. The park will feature a walking path, benches, picnic tables, and a small shade structure that will double as a performance venue as well as a picnic shelter. Nice sod and landscaping plantings will add greenspace. Public art murals are also planned. According to Lowell city manager Scott Attaway, cost to build the facility will be minimal.“Most of the work will be done by our public works employees,” he said. Attaway estimates it will

Did you know that in the last 20 years more Americans have died from substance abuse, (alcohol and drugs) than all combat deaths, in all American conflicts in our history? This information was published by the Rand Corporation in an article entitled Synthetic Opioids are an Everything Problem, June 9th,Closer2022. to home, the City of Gastonia reported 16 deaths from overdose year to date (June) as opposed to 11 at this time last year. Gaston County reported 19 deaths as opposed to 6 last year to date. Unfortunately, many of the families that suffer such a loss, suffer in silence. There is a stigma that develops among a community whether it is a church, a family or a town. The stigma of refusing to acknowledge the loss leads to a lack of closure and healing, causing people to hide their problem thereby missing out on help. However, courageous people have finally decided that it is time to acknowledge their loss publicly to help others. International Overdose Awareness and Remembrance Day is in August each year. This year there will be a public ceremony and remembrance on Tuesday, August 30th 7pm at the Rotary Pavilion in downtown Gastonia. In addition, three churches will have a time of special remembrance in their communities. First Presbyterian Belmont, at 7:00pm on Wednesday August 31st in their sanctuary. Our garden is done for the season. The kids have returned to school. I’m catching up on local football game schedules. Cooler temps have snuck in (yay), but what I’m most intrigued by is that I finally get to start marking down the days till our weekend getaway to Gatlinburg. It was planned several months ago. I blinked once, and it truly seems like yesterday I was pushing my toes in the sand at Garden City. The least favorite season of mine has been a blur. The birds are beginning to adapt to the changing season. I’ve been noticing their frequent visits to my feeders. They are smarter than we think. Just like the squirrels and insects. Preparation is in progress ….as we humans too begin to adapt to changes that come with the end of summer.

There are just a couple dozen small homes on the narrow pavement, most of which were built during the 1920s by Stuart Cramer.
SCHOOL
Watching movies at Baltimore School in 1953, Cramerton, NC. Photo courtesy Millican Pictorial History Mus eum provided heat. Students sat at wooden desks. There were no steps. Kids had to jump off the porch and get pulled back up by classmates. Books were secondhand ones from white schools.Today, the Baltimore School is an abandoned wooden building with basically one large room. There’s a porch on the front corner. Inside, there are several original benches, one desk, and a couple of old washing machines. The windows are blacked and there’s soot on the ceiling. On the bright side, the original clapboards and foundation are in good shape.. In other words, a solid core is there for a restoration project. The building is owned by 75-year-old Fred Glenn, a Vietnam vet. He was born at 555 Patterson Street in Baltimore and currently lives in Charlotte.Glenn’s deep love of Baltimore led him to buy the school building from Burlington in 2003 and is currently driving his desire to see it preserved. “There are a lot of memories here,” Glenn said. “My mom Mary Lucinda Adams and aunt Helen Falls Holmes went to school here. When I was growing up in the 1950s, we used to come see movies on Tuesdays at the school and sit on the benches that are still inside. Fred Kirby (WBTV singing cowboy star) would come and put on shows for us. He would park his horse trailer at the end of the street and ride Calico to the neighborhood. We also had fish fries.”Glenn has a dream for the future of the Baltimore School.“Ifyou think about it, the school was our community center,” he said. “I would like to see it preserved, possibly as a museum for current and future generations in memory of those who attended it.”

Summer is winding down
The Baltimore School served African-American children first through eighth grades. From there, the kids went to Reid High in Belmont. The school continued to operate until integration came along. Once that happened, the African-American students from Baltimore were transferred to schools in Belmont andTheCramerton.school was nothing fancy. A potbellied stove Side view of the school. Turning another year older (60) recently, perhaps has made me think about the swiftness of the days flying by. When we were kids, every day was carefree, especially the golden days of summer. We would kick off our shoes and play for hours on those lazy afternoons. Those days seemed endless. For me, this time of year reminds me of how quickly time is passing by…like jello slipping through a child’s fingers. I’m already reminded it’s that unique time to somehow make room for my fall-winter wardrobe in a house that only has one closet. I somehow muster the ability to make this happen with ease. This will be the 27th year in doingTheso.next time the days of summer seem to go by too fast, take a breath. Sit back and relax…if only for a moment. Watch the sunset. Enjoy that ice cream cone…sip that cold iced tea a little bit slower. As I’m often reminded from a well-known movie line from 1986- “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” In the meantime, I’ll be counting down the days to Fall.

Chase Johnson is credited with being a hard-nosed runner while Summey is viewed as a true leader, a running back with possesses good vision and is an excellent blocker.
In East Gaston’s offense the tight end is expected to block.
The Warriors are still sorting out who will start at receiver. Right now, there is an open competition underway. That competition should only make what is considered a capable set of players only better. Look for John Michael Green, Austin Price, and Damazia Murphy to all be in the mix.

East Gaston is determined to take the next step
Sherrill has been the Warriors starter since his freshman year. So far, he has handled the pressure rather well. Each year he seems to get a bit better. This year the Warriors will need him to pick it up a notch or two. “He has a strong arm,” Head coach JT Postell said of Sherrill. “He’s an intelligent kid. We’ve challenged him to step up and take a leadership role and he has done that.”

The big question going into this season is simple. Was last year just a fluke or is EG football really back? There can be no doubt that head coach JT Postell and his staff have changed the direction of the program. Last year the Warriors sported a solid defense teamed with a dominating run game and a credible passing attack. However, the Warriors lost 17 starters to graduation. Now Postell and staff are going to need to see who’s going to step up to continue the progress that’s been made.
East Gaston’s offensive line will be filled with new faces. But overall, this is another group that coach Postell believes has significant upside. “I’m excited about this group,” Postell said. “We have worked hard on our offensive line.”
Last season’s feel-good story of the year revolved around East Gaston football. After years of struggling, the Warriors put together an impressive 8-5 season that included a trip to the third round of the state playoffs.
“He’s a tough kid,” Postell said. “He will be asked to be a leader and help the O-line.”
The only returning starter will be Jacob Jenkins. Jenkins is a hard-working player who will be asked to take the next step and also be a leader. Look for Johnny Brown, Preston Kennard, Garrett McAuley Braden Cross, Christian Clark and Michael Jagger to all compete for offensive line slots.
Offense Time to shift gears The Warriors employ the shotgun wing. EG’s offense is designed to implement a running or passing game depending on what the coaching staff wants to do. Last year the Warriors relied heavily on the run game. This year East Gaston is hoping to mix it up a bit more and put the ball in the air a lot more often. The hope is that junior quarterback Trenton Sherrill will come into his own this year.
Defense Throw the kitchen sink at them Defense coordinator Clint Jordan will call the plays for East Gaston’s 3-4 defense

The Warriors linebackers are the strength of the defense. They are also EG’s most experience group. East Gaston’s linebackers will be asked to do a lot. In the Warrior’s 3-4 scheme the linebackers will be the ones that will be counted on to make the biggest impact. Look for EG’s linebackers to hit offenses coming from just about anywhere on the field. Jake Fox, Payton Parker, Ben Summey, Chase Johnson, Logan Dixon and Sheldon Clark will all see action.

Donovan Reed, Antonio Ford, Braden Cross, and Garrett McAuley will all be vying for playing time.

The Warriors defensive backs will feature a mix of older vets and younger players. Overall, this should be a capable group. It’s another position set where East Gaston has depth. That depth has created some competition. Clay Harper, Jayce Rowe and Austin Price have all started in the past. Joining them in the defensive backfield will be Omarion Pryor and Kamari Ponder. On the special teams front look for Tripp Abernathy to handle the punting and kicking duties for this season. As coach Postell sizes up the competition of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A he has no illusions as to what his team is up against.
From
Page 3
The Southern Piedmont is a truly unique conference. It features some of the best 2A teams in the state along with some scrappy 1A “Theprograms.conference is going to be better from top to bottom,” Postell said. “There are no off weeks in our conference. We know who Shelby and Burns are and we know Thomas Jefferson will always be tough.
If there were ever a time that a crystal ball would come in handy this would be it. What’s going to happen at EG this year is really anyone’s guess. However, as the season opener approaches East Gaston is not shying away from the challengesEveryoneahead.knows the team lost a lot of talent to Howgraduation.theteam is meeting that challenge may give us an idea of what may happen. Instead of worrying about what was, the players and coaches seem ready to answer the call and are focusing on what could be. There is a new sense of school spirit at East Gaston these days. There is a hunger to win.The players and coaches at EG have worked hard the last few years to turn things around. That hunger and spirit is reflected in the fact that 82 players came out for football this year. An impressive number to say the least. This is a group that is ready to leave it all on the Don’tfield.be surprised if EG chalks up another winning year. And even if they don’t break .500 this season this is still a program on the rise.

“We will take what they give us,” head coach Adam Hodge said. “If they put 10 in the box, why won’t we throw. We have flexibility, we aren’t handcuffed.”

“He’s a very good option quarterback,” coach Hodge said. “He’s quick, and with a year under his belt the game should be slowing down for him. He can do a lot with the ball in his hands.”Innine games last year Phifer ran for 341 yards and six touchdowns. He went 6 for 14 through the air with one touchdown and two picks. Phifer is no gunslinger, but he will keep a defense honest and get the ball where it needs to go. At fullback Cam Medlock will get the nod. Medlock isn’t big at 150 pounds, but he brings a lot to the table. When Phifer went down last year Medlock stepped up and played some quarterback.
That experience taught him a lot.
Of course, nobody’s going to be able to do anything without some solid work being turned in by the offensive line. This year’s “O” line appears to be up to the task. The line will be anchored by All-State tackle Sullivan Absher. Absher is the real deal, a Notre Dame committed player who is a devastating blocker. Also lining up will be Dylan Owenby, Trey Cherry, Gavin Gibson and Hudson Spargo. Coach Hodge likes what this group brings to the offense. “I like them,” Hodge explained. “They are a good unit. They are tough kids who work hard. They bring their work boots to practice.”
South Point’s wing backs, tight ends and split ends will feature an eclectic group that will be counted on to make contributions.Whenthe Red Raider offense gets going look for them to move their wings and receivers around using shifts and motion.South Point will throw and pitch depending on the situation.Players looking to see in action this year will be Jackson Blee, Aaron Chaney, Dawson Tobin and Harrison McKinney.

Last year the South Point Red Raider football team had a successful run. Big Red went 11-4 overall and got as far as the Western finals of the state playoffs.TheRed Raiders are going into the 2022 season looking pretty good. A significant portion of last year’s starting lineup is coming back. Offense Run, run, and maybe pass some As is their tradition South Point will run their version of the triple option known as The Redbone. Offense coordinator Josh Justice will call the plays. When South Point has the ball it’s no secret what they’re going to do. It’s a given that the Red Raiders ARE going to run. The real question is how much. Over the years South Point has always stressed running the ball. At times there are games where the Red Raiders never put the ball in the air. With that said, the staff has no problem adjusting the offense a bit based on their talent. This year it looks like the Red Raiders have the players they need to run well and pass when they want to. That kind of diversity can cause problems for defenses set on stuffing the South Point run game.
“He’s a tough kid,” Hodge noted. “He’s worked out in the off season. Because he played quarterback, he understands the offense. He gets the big picture and that’s important.”
Under center for the Red Raiders this year will be senior Elijah Phifer. Phifer was the starter last year before being knocked out of the game in the opener against Kings Mountain. After losing their starting QB the Red Raiders made do. However, Phifer came back a few months later and was a big part of South Point’s playoff run.
Final Summary Going into the 2022 season
“The longer I’ve done this the more I realize you just never know,” Hodge went on to say. “So much can happen in a football season. There are so many variables.” Coach Hodge is right, anything can happen. With that said look for South Point to vie for the Big South championship and have another deep playoff run.
The South Point defensive backs are by far the most experienced group of players on the team. This is a veteran group with a ton of varsity experience. Will Ross, Jaquis Rumph, Mica Stowe, and Fred Vickers all “They’rereturn. all returning starters,” coach Hodge said. “Some are three-year starters. They have a lot of snaps under their belts.”South Point’s kicker is Charlie Birtwistle. Last season Birtwistle was solid across the board.

The Red Raider defense will be run by third year defensive coordinator Brian Andrews. Once again South Point runs their Multiple defense, a system featuring different fronts and coverages. At any given time, South Point will run a 4-2-5, 4-3, 5-2 or pretty much anything else they need to move into. This unit is flexible. Look for the South Point “D” to morph into another scheme based on what the opposing offense tries to do. The South Point defensive line has size and quickness. This unit gives the coaching staff a lot of options. The line is headed up by seniors Aiden Ramirez and Josh Crowder.
“They all have their strengths and weaknesses,” Hodge said of the linebacking corps. “You put the best kid in there to win the football game.”

Of course, there’s no telling what will actually happen once the season gets underway. The Red Raiders are in the Big South 3A, a brutally competitive conference known for its hard-hitting action. When asked about the competition in the Big South coach Hodge responds in his usual measured and pragmatic way.
South Point is solid. The Red Raiders have the tools needed to have a good year. In fact, if the defense holds the line and players like Phifer and Medlock step up Big Red may just have a great year.
At linebacker the situation is somewhat fluid. There will be an open competition for starting slots. Who will land a spot is yet to be Whendetermined.lookingat who to start coach Hodge is looking for players that can contribute in different situations.

Cramer’s primary running back this year will be sophomore Mark O’Dell. O’Dell has some good size. He brings a lot to the table. “He’s a hard-nosed physical runner who has decent speed,” coach McMillan went on to say. “He’s really worked hard in the off season.”
“He is a Anotherplaymaker.”playerto watch is Tyler Ward. Ward is a possession type receiver. He doesn’t have blazing speed, but he catches the ball and keeps the chains moving. “He finds the open areas of the defense,” McMillan added. “He’s doing very well with that.”
Last season Stuart Cramer football finished the year at 6-5. The Storm went to the first round of the playoffs and lost to West Charlotte. However, due to an ineligible player West Charlotte forfeited the game and the win was awarded to Cramer.Going into this season Cramer has some holes to fill since the team lost its defensive front six due to graduation. However, it looks like the coaches and players are prepared to address that. Right now, everybody is looking forward to the new year. “I’m excited to see what’s to come,” Head coach Ben McMillan said. “This has been our best-off season so far.”

BringOffensethe raid Once again Cramer will employ their Air Raid shotgunbased offense. The plays will be called by offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. The Storm offense is a version of the popular spread system used by various high school and college programs across the country. This offense is designed to “spread” the defense by putting the quarterback in the shotgun and employing multiple wide receivers set formations. In the Cramer system the Storm can run or pass at will. However, one best be prepared for the fact that Cramer will throw the ball. The guiding force behind the Cramer offense is senior quarterback Justin Rocquemore.Rocquemore is the ultimate dual threat quarterback. A gifted all-conference athlete that has the ability to score anytime he has the ball. “He’s our captain and leader,” McMillan said. “Everything will run through him on offense.”

Cramer gears up for what could be a good year
At wide receiver it looks like Cramer will go into the season with a lot of depth. The roster is full of good athletes. The receiving corps is led by Isaiah Johnson. Johnson was one of the Storm’s top receivers last year.
“We’re going to try to run the ball more this year,” coach McMillan explained. “But these guys also need to be able to move and pass protect.”

The Storm offensive line is a well-rounded group made up of players who understand the game. The line will feature some experienced players along with some up and coming talent looking to make an impact. Even though Cramer’s stresses the pass the Storm plans on having an effective run game this year as well.

“He is someone we need to get the ball to,” McMillan said.
Cramer
Final Analysis Coach McMillan wasn’t kidding when he said that the Big South was one of the best conferences in the state. Every week the action in the Big South is physical and competitive. Who will be on top at the end of the season is anyone’s guess.
For Cramer to break out the Storm needs to play opportunistic mistake free football.
Stuart Cramer Storm 2022 Junior Varsity Football Team members with coaching staff.
“He’s a fundamentally sound player,” coach McMillan noted. “He does the right things to play that position.”
the run Defensive coordinator John Putnam will call the shots as Cramer employs a 4-2-5 scheme. Since the Storm are situated in the run heavy Big South the coaching staff beliefs this system will serve them well.

An open competition will determine who will land starting roles on the defensive line going forward. The Cramer linebackers are an interesting group. They are athletic and capable of roaming the field and making plays.Daimean Fernandez is the leader of the defense. Last season Frenadez played free safety, this year he moving into a linebacker role. In 2021 Fernandez was the Storm’s third leading tackler so there in no doubt he knows how to stick people. The other linebacker slot will go to freshman Chris Wurster. Wurster is a player that has intrigued coaching staff. He is mature for his age and is coachable. “He has a lot of potential,” coach McMillan said. “He jumped in there and stood out. We heard a lot of good things about him at Belmont Middle.” In Cramer’s scheme the Storm have five defensive backs. This group is talented, athletic and quick. Three starters willInreturn.the4-2-5 the coaching staff can get creative in how they use their defensive backs. Look for the Cramer DB’s to play the pass well, sneak up to provide run support and blitz from time to time. The Cramer corners are Frank Thomas and Kamari Houze. The safeties will be Cameron Scott, Ethan Ward and John Hill.As of press time the Cramer kicking game was still being sortedWhenout.coach McMillan sizes up the Big South 3A he is well aware of the caliber of teams the Storm will face. “It’s one of the best conferences in the state,” McMillan added. “I think it’s going to be tough. We had five teams in the playoffs, four went to the third round. But I think we will do well in the conference.”
In a nutshell, if everyone does their job the Storm will have a say in how things unfold in the Big South. Look for Cramer to be in the mix every week. A playoff spot is a solid bet.
StoppingDefense
The Cramer defense may not be asked to win games, but they will have to do their part as well. If the Storm “D” can hold its own and generate a few turnovers that will be a step in the right direction.
On offense the running game is going to need to be effective and the receivers are going to need to pull in every pass that comes their way. On the defensive side of the ball the task is a bit different.
If a team has quick and athletic players the 4-2-5 is a good fit. Luckily for Cramer they have just the players they need for this scheme. The Cramer staff knows that they’re going to need to deal with potent running games. However, they also know that many of the opponents on their schedule won’t hesitate to put the ball in the air.
“Our first goal is to stop the run,” coach McMillan said. “But we also need to defend the pass.” The Storm’s defensive line is somewhat of a work in progress. Since Cramer lost so many of their starters to graduation there’s work to be done here. The line will be led by senior defensive end Brison Bazemore. Bazemore is ready to step up and get the job done.
For Cramer to win this year they will need to bring their “A” game every week. No one ever wants to single out one player as the key to a team’s success. However, in Cramer’s case, Justin Rocquemore is a player that needs to be highlighted. Rocquemore is an elite athlete. If he has a good year the Storm may well upset the apple cart. However, Rocquemore can’t be expected to carry the team. He is going to need help.

Our
Gaston Schools story Gaston County Schools had a great start to the 20222023 year as more than 30,000 students returned to school on Wednesday, August 17. Exciting for everyone involved, the first day of school is about welcoming students back to class. It also is a time for going over procedures, practicing routines, and getting acclimated to being at school. At Bessemer City Primary, students in Alexandria Caughey’s and Marilyn Hinton’s first-grade class were on their way to the cafeteria to learn what it is like to go through the lunchline. It’s something they have never done because of COVID-19 as students had meals served to them in the classrooms during the pandemic. The students were quick to point out that they go to the cafeteria to eat and are hoping to enjoy pizza, chicken nuggets, andAfternooncheeseburgers.dismissal at Lowell Elementary was like clockwork. Bus riders carried color-coded index cards to know which bus to board. Car riders waited as staff maneuvered children to their parents’ car with assistance from the school resource officer, who handled traffic control and maintained order. It took about 20 minutes for everyone to be on their way home.Lowell’s principal, Kristin Kiser, was pleased with the first day, which can be a little hectic, but any stress is diminished by seeing the children, hearing their stories about what they did this summer, and watching them explore their new classroom andAtsurroundings.Ashbrook High School, students Christian Reynolds and Shekira Littlejohn had differing, but positive perspectives on starting a new school year. Littlejohn, a ninth grader, said being in high school now will be an adjustment, but she is looking forward to meeting new people. Reynolds, the student body president, is happy about being a senior. “I’m ready for the Class of 2023 to have a great year, and I want us to have fun before we graduate,” he said.

Her hope is that he enjoys being at school for the first time. “I’m very excited for him to start kindergarten,” she said. “He’s eager to learn and make new friends and have fun at school.”Before heading to class, second graders Marley Dennis and Ava McCray enjoyed breakfast together in the cafeteria. Even though they are in different classes this year, they are still best friends. That’s what the first day of school is about. Seeing friends, meeting teachers, getting information about the year ahead, settling in, and gaining an understanding of expectations and how things work. It also is about setting goals, buckling down, and getting focused on academics while gearing up to enjoy athletics, extracurriculars, and other school activities. Then, tomorrow, everyone gets up, heads back to school, and does it all over again.
