New CaroMont Health office building coming to Cherryville Relocation of CaroMont Family Medicine will also add Urgent Care by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

According to a media release from CaroMont Health, they announced last week (Thursday, June 17) their plans of a partnership with the City of Cherryville, to build a new primary and urgent office in Cherryville. As per the media release, “The future site, located at the corner of East Church Street and North Cherry Street, will relocate CaroMont Family Medicine and add extended urgent care hours for patients and fam-

ilies in Cherryville and the surrounding areas.” It further stated that site clearing “…will be completed this summer, with construction for the new, state-of-the-art medical practice beginning in the fall.” As CaroMont’s Media Relations coordinator, Meghan Berney noted in the release, the new Cherryville CaroMont Family Medicine and Urgent Care facility, like the primary care and urgent care locations in Gastonia, Dallas, Cramerton and Belmont, “…will offer expert, compassionate primary care during regular business hours, as well as flexible care options for urgent medical issues with extended hours.” In attendance at the June

17, meeting were CaroMont Medical Group President and CEO, Chris Peek; and CaroMont Medical Group Vice President Ryan Campbell, along with Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III; Cherryville City Manager and Fire Chief Jeff Cash; and Cherryville Main Street Director David Day. Said Mayor Beam, “It’s great to see CaroMont Health growing and bringing an upgraded experience and new option for medical care to families in Cherryville. We are looking forward to the addition of this medical care facility and the convenience it will offer our residents.” Berney noted that to prepare for the new practice, CaroMont Health recently See CAROMONT, Page 2

Generous donation helps CFD purchase five Stryker defibrillator units AC Wofford: Cost of the defib units was $11,114.79 by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Cherryville Fire Department was recently the recipient of a generous anonymous donation to purchase small, Lifepak 1000 heart defibrillators for use on their units. Assistant Fire Chief Jason Wofford said the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, noted via email that the defib units cost $11,114.79, to be precise. “Five of the Lifepak 1000 units were purchased

to replace five of the six we currently had,” said AC Wofford, adding, “To minimize cost we only replaced five units and these five are sufficient for our apparatus.” AC Wofford said the bright yellow units purchased are the Stryker brand and they are compatible with what the Paramedics use for Gaston Emergency Medical Services and are the same as those currently in use all over Gaston County. As for who all on the CFD staff knows how to use the units, he also noted, “All of our fulltime staff are trained and more than half our volunteer staff, who are certified EMT’s, are trained to use this equipment.” Regarding other material or equipment the department is still in need of AC Wofford said, “Fortunately, over the past couple years we have replaced all needed equipment. We will always have the yearly replacement See CFD, Page 6

The City Council’s Monday night, June 14, regular session saw the Council, after approving their previous work session’s and regular Council meetings’ minutes, move right into Mayor H.L. Beam’s comments. Mayor Beam noted receiving cards of thanks and of commendation from the family of the late Terry “Fish” Fisher regarding the ABC Store plaque dedication, as well as from the family of Mrs. Jean Aderholdt Beam. Mayor Beam also addressed an email he received from the NC DOT about teen highway deaths, naming essentially three primary issues causing them: not wearing seat belts;

Dixie Youth Softball Tournament on July 9; and the American Legion State Tournament starting July 27.” Mayor Beam also noted the town’s well-known (and amazing) Fourth of July Festival will be held on July 2, with everything starting at 6 p.m., and fireworks at 10 p.m. The band for the event

will be “Too Much Sylvia”, whose vocalist recently won a big beach music award, added the mayor. There were no citizens who called in to be heard and one citizen spoke briefly about folks speeding on the street that runs in front of his home, endangering his See COUNCIL, Page 6

Ryan Wright serves his country as a United States Marine by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Ryan Wright’s dream, ever since he was a tyke, was to be a United States Marine. So says his father, Larry Wright, who is the City’s Wastewater Plant Superintendent/ORC. So, thanks to the USMC’s Delayed Enlistment Program, young Wright – later to be PFC Ryan Wright – while still in Cherryville High school – began his military career with the United States Marine Corps in August 2019 by enlisting in the Delayed Entry Program. His dad, Larry, said, “The DEP allowed him to prepare mentally and physically for boot camp.” Shortly after PFC Wright graduated Cherryville High School on June 5, 2020, Larry said he left for boot camp on June 7. However, it must be noted that as part of the restrictions for COVID-19, he attended the Citadel for a two-week See WRIGHT, Page 4

Due to USMC personal security rules and regulations, only PFC Ryan Wright (in the front row, down on one knee) can be allowed to be named. Ryan’s dad, Larry, said that anyone else cannot be named. However, Larry said they are the guys Ryan graduated with from Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island. (photo provided)

Local playwright’s two-act play wins Cherryville Little Theatre contest “Lum & Abner” finishes in first place out of all plays received by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info Shelby native Ludy Marvin Wilkie, is – among many other things – an accomplished playwright. He has penned many plays and had just as many performed. To that end, he can now add another play to his ever-growing list: his two-act family comedy “Lum & Abner”, based on the lovable radio characters created by the late Chet Lauck and Norris Goff and written as an homage to easier times when life was a little simpler and slower. The comedy won first place in the Cherryville Little Theatre’s 2021 Playwriting Contest, said Sarah Sandoval, of the CLT, who added, “While ‘Lum and Abner’ may be a period play, the story of a small community coming together is timeless.” She continued, “The goal of Cherryville Little Theatre’s playwriting contest (was) to engage our community during a time when our doors were shut due to the pandemic,” as they searched for ways to encourage the arts during a time when it was needed most, a theme not so different from that found in Wilkie’s play, as the characters work together to save their town with creative solutions.” Sandoval noted, “(All) submissions were judged based on plot, professionalism, and potential audience appeal.” Wilkie, a U.S. Army veteran, is a Shelby High School graduate; a Western Carolina University and University of Oklahoma graduate (English degree); was a

He was named the Greater Shelby Community Theatre’s 2010 “Volunteer of the Year”. For their part, Cherryville Little Theatre’s staff told Mr. Wilkie that, at the time of the competition, there were “… no guarantees on putting the winning show onstage due to COVID restrictions,” adding “… that aspect wasn’t a part of the contest.” Still, they did say they are “…looking to encourage artistic endeavors and maintain engagement from the community during lockdown with the hope of future productions.” In Wilkie’s case, the CLT will find a director for his play should the decision be made to produce it. Wilkie’s other plays include: “The Ballad of Nancy Hanks”;

The Diary of Faust”; “Three Jolly Coachmen”; “Hello, Johnny Appleseed”; “Wages of Sin”’ “Golden Days of Yesteryear”; “Ruth, of Moab”; and “The Son of Man”. As for his writing the play, at the end of the day, Wilkie said it was all about his love of radio. “I have always enjoyed old radio shows. Some years back I heard a broadcast of two 15-minute ‘Lum and Abner’ Christmas programs and became very interested in them. That led to research and, eventually to the script.” Wilkie said the script was approved by Chet Lauck Jr., whose father played Lum in the series. “That family holds the rights to the ‘Lum and Abner’ trademark, and I made arrangements through them to market the play. “‘Lum and Abner’ helped America through the Great Depression and through World War Two. Now they stand in the wings waiting to entertain us again. I hope that they get the chance,” he said.

planned for – WIND! Yikes! At one point, Ms. Traci’s flannel board went flying off the table. Thankfully, Ms. Sarah had tagged along that morning and was able to retrieve it before it made its way back to the library. We’ll continue to hold our Outdoor Storytime every Thursday at 9:30 a.m., with our last one being on Aug. 19 (weather permitting). And, hey (and YAY)! We’re bringing back one of most popular summer programs, Shark Week BINGO! Like many, we are fascinated by sharks and enjoy the week-long celebration of these creatures that the Discovery Channel puts on every summer. The most popular Take-and-Make curbside packet last summer was – hands down – our Shark packet. This year we plan to have another Take-and-Make Shark Fun Pack but remember, supplies are limited. We’ll have some things in the branch as well, and yes, we’re excited to play BINGO again!

It’s been too long since we’ve been able to shout “Bingo!” and we know the competition will be fierce. Be sure to register as soon as possible; we’ve set up a waiting list as we anticipate this event will fill up quickly. If you haven’t been participating in “Tails & Tales” – the Summer Reading program – you have plenty of time to catch up. We have everything you need to get started: reading records/cards, bookmarks, and of course, lots of book suggestions! Remember, you are able to count any type of book you read, including audio books and e-books. After all, reading is reading, right?! For questions about all things library-related, call us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Our public service hours are 10 a.m., to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. Stay safe and stay healthy – and happy reading!

Larry continued, noting from USMC information (and in military parlance) that, “On 24 June 2020, PFC Wright stepped onto the iconic yellow footprints and walked through the metal hatchets symbolizing the beginning of his transformation as a civilian to a United States Marine recruit. “On 5 Sept. 2020, PFC earned the title of United States Marine after completing the final test, ‘The Crucible’, a 54-hour test to see if he had what it takes to be ‘One of The Few, The Proud’, a United States Marine. On 9 Sept. 2020, PFC Wright graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island and went onto train at Camp Geiger in Jacksonville, N.C., for 29 days.” Larry noted that following his son’s Marine Combat Training, Ryan, 19, began his 9-week training for his MOS (Military Occupational Spe-

Solomon Willis, Ed.D, has been recognized by Liberty University with the 2021 Outstanding ApSolomon plied Project Award. Wil- Willis, Ed.D lis is a math instructor at Cleveland Community College. He has worked at the College since 2002. “I am totally honored and humbled to be selected as the winner of the 2021 Outstanding Applied Project Award,” said Willis. “It was a pleasure to conduct research that could benefit CCC first-hand. I appreciate all of the support from my professors at Liberty and my colleagues at CCC who were helpful in making all of this happen.”

Willis completed a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree from Liberty University ahead of schedule in February 2021, after successfully defending his doctoral project titled, “Improving Student Passing Rates in College Math Courses at Cleveland Community College.” The project included an extensive literature review on techniques that have proven to be successful at other colleges for increasing math scores. In addition, Willis surveyed other CCC faculty, interviewed five CCC administrators, including President Jason Hurst, and analyzed past success rates and documents. “We are so proud of Dr. Willis and his accomplishments. This recognition is well deserved. He is a great example of the dedicated faculty we are so fortunate to have,” said Dr. Hurst. “He and his colleagues care about their students and

this College. Our students get the same quality instruction as they would receive at a fouryear university.” From his research, Willis made many recommendations for improvement, including training for faculty in techniques for decreasing math anxiety and building motivation, building connections with students, using active learning, technology and increasing tutoring offerings. “The nice thing about this capstone project with Liberty is that it allowed me to focus on a problem first-hand that I could work on and benefit my own students, students of my colleagues, and the institution as a whole,” said Willis. Dr. Willis resides in Cherryville, and is a 1995 graduate of Cherryville High School. He is the son of Eddie and Brenda Willis, of Cherryville.

He followed in my dad’s footprints. His grandfather, Larry Wright Sr. – served in the Marines from 1966-1969, fought in the Vietnam War, and received a Purple Heart.” Larry continued, “Ryan is really enjoying being a Marine and working on planes out in California.” Larry said Ryan’s family are all very proud of him and his choice to serve his country.

Will NC college students face vaccine mandate this fall? by JENNIFER BRINGLE Carolina Public Press As the COVID-19 vaccine becomes more widely available, colleges and universities across the nation weigh the decision of whether to require students to be vaccinated before returning to campus in the fall. Duke University was among around a dozen schools nationwide to announce relatively early that they will require vaccination for the fall semester. However, more schools are following suit, and others are considering a vaccine mandate as well. “Looking ahead, we know that widespread vaccination will be the only way to facilitate a return to normal and robust campus life,” Duke President Vincent E. Price said in a notice sent to students, faculty and staff announcing the school’s decision to require proof of vaccination. According to the announcement, the policy applies to all undergraduate, graduate and professional students planning to be on campus for any period of time, aside from those with documented medical or religious exemptions. North Carolina state law requires college students at both public and private institutions to receive vaccinations for several diseases – diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B and varicella – before reporting to campus. Some schools also have requirements for flu vaccines each year. Duke was among the first institutions in the state to enact a COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Many schools holding off The UNC System, which operates 16 public universities across the state, has hosted inoculation clinics on its campuses, vaccinating more than 62,000 people, so far. But the system has held off on declaring an official requirement. “The UNC System strongly recommends the vaccine for students but is not requiring it,” the system said via a statement from UNC Vice President of Communications Jane Stancill. “We urge our students and all North Carolinians to be vaccinated at the earliest opportunity,” Larger private institutions have also been weighing the options for fall but are generally holding off on making a final decision. In the case of Wake Forest, the position was uncertain a few weeks ago, but that changed in late April. “We are working on plans for the fall semester now,” Cheryl Walker, acting executive director, news and communications, Wake Forest University, said in mid-April. “While we are encouraging students to get vaccinated, we have not, at this point, made any decisions about requiring a vaccine.” However, on April 20, Wake Forest released its decision and announced its “intent to require proof of vaccination for all students in the fall” on its website. Duke’s move to require vaccination has spurred many other higher education institutions across the state to consider enacting similar policies. “We had our health and safety task force meet, and based on Duke, we decided to have a serious conversation about vaccine requirements,” said Jermaine Thomas, director of public safety at Guilford College in Greensboro. “And because we work so closely with the Guilford County Health Department, we decided to follow their guidelines and not require the vaccine during the emergency use authorization.” The emergency use authorization issued through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical tools such as vaccines during public health emergencies. The emergency use authorization fast-tracked the approval

and production of COVID-19 vaccines by Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson for distribution to the public. Because the FDA has only allowed the emergency use of the vaccinations and hasn’t given full approval yet, some schools don’t feel they can legally require students to receive the vaccines. “We are looking at what we are able to do, and I’m talking to my colleagues at other institutions,” said Paul Perrine, vice president for student life at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. “Factors that could play into that definitely include whether the vaccine will be removed from emergency use and officially recommended.” With the recent recommendation from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA for clinics to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to a possible link to an increased risk of blood clotting, some still have concerns about the safety of the vaccines. The UNC System halted its use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in its campus clinics, opting to use the Moderna shot instead. While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is administered through a single dose, the Pfizer and Moderna versions are both given in two doses with weekslong waiting periods between the first and second shots. For some college students attempting to receive their vaccine before leaving campus for the summer break, that can pose an issue since most schools end classes in the first weeks of May. In lieu of requiring vaccinations, most schools will continue to follow protocols set forth by the CDC to help stop the spread of COVID-19. “We are planning to have a quarantine isolation facility on campus should we need it and anticipate that, like at other schools, masks would be part of being on campus,” Perrine said. Some schools will also require COVID testing before returning to campus. “As we did this year, we anticipate requiring a negative COVID test for students, faculty and staff before the fall semester begins,” said Cory Butzin, marketing communications specialist at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory. Warren Wilson, along with several other colleges in Western North Carolina, has partnered with the Mountain Area Health Education Center to address COVID-19 on their campuses. A group of presidents and chancellors from participating institutions meets weekly with a MAHEC representative, and Warren Wilson has implemented a student health ambassador initiative on campus. “The student health ambassador program has been very successful on our campus,” Perrine said. “Right now, they’re educating their peers about the vaccine and facilitating vaccine appointments to all students who want it. We have an exciting group that has been focused on those things, and it’s something we are planning on continuing. We’ve had some great student involvement in health advocacy.” And even if they don’t require COVID vaccinations for the fall semester, most schools say they plan to continue to urge their students to get inoculated and will provide opportunities on or near campus to make it easier for students to get their shots. “No matter where we land on (the vaccine requirement) decision, we do plan to continue to have vaccine clinics,” Thomas of Guilford College said. “It’s going to be a very collaborative decision, and we’re going to make it in the most prudent way possible to make sure everyone is safe and healthy.”w

the church. It starts in the home. I am blessed to have a father who, from my birth, has lived a life that showed his faith. My parents made sure that my brothers and I made it to church on a regular basis. We prayed at home, and read Bible stories. They talked to us about God. They let us ask questions. They showed us how to treat others with respect and kindness. They impressed on us what was important. I am super blessed to have parents like them. What is interesting is that my dad didn’t see our relationship as exclusive. In our faith tradition, every man is a father to every child. My dad introduced me to other fathers of the church who

helped to shape my faith formation. So, in a sense I have the faith not of one but of many men who stepped up to help raise me. So, as the world becomes more and more secular many men will no longer feel the need to impress on the children of this world a faith in God. That makes it more important than ever for men of faith to be fathers to all. I pray our Heavenly Father will guide men of faith to open their hearts and lives to this next generation. I pray also that this week those who read this would take a moment to reach out to all the fathers that share their faith with them and say ‘thank you’. God Bless!

COUNCIL From Page 1 children. Cherryville Police Chief Cam Jenks spoke with the gentleman about that and got the necessary details on the issue in order to address the problem. Council then moved to the special recognition of City Clerk, Mrs. Paige Green’s recertification as an NC Certified Municipal Clerk. Mayor Beam read from the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks (NCAMC) letter of recommendation for Mrs. Green notifying the City of Cherryville she has been awarded the honor for her having achieved its “…high educational, experience, and service requirements.”

Mrs. Green received her initial State designation in 2016, and after meeting the extensive continuing education requirements set forth by the NCAMC, she has been awarded their NC CMC designation through July 2026. Paige stood while the mayor read the letter to the Council and the audience, after which he congratulated Paige on her award. Mrs. Green thanked the mayor and the City Councill and staff. The Council heard from Planning & Zoning Director Derrick Mackey on the 160D updates to the zoning ordinance and the subdivision ordinance discussed at the Council’s work session at the end of May. Mr. Mackey reminded Council these changes were not core changes but still had to be voted

Planning & Zoning Director Mackey was up again to discuss the Council approve an ordinance to demolish a structure, long dilapidated and fallen in, at 506 W. Second St., providing photos of said structure and its current state. Said Mr. Mackey, “The family’s heirs are in Australia and they don’t want anything to do with it (the structure),” Mackey suggested Council approve the structure be demolished, the lot cleared, and the debris be disposed of, to which Council voted and all approved of the action requested. Police Chief Cam Jenks spoke to Council about their considering a resolution to adopt a policy for mutual aid assistance with other law enforcement agencies. Brandon Parker assisted in the finding of a missing Lincoln County youth with special needs. “Our two Cherryville law enforcement officers were successful in finding the young lady and returning her safely back home,” said Chief Jenks. This resolution was drafted, noted Chief Jenks, because Cherryville’s mutual aid agreement had to be renewed and submitted, with a signature, to the NC Centralina Council of Governments. Council members moved to approve the mutual aide agreement’s renewal and all approved. Council then went into public hearing on consideration of adopting the proposed FY 20212022’s Fiscal Budget, which was passed by the Council. Council members did instruct City Manager Cash to get back to them at the June 29 work session with

information concerning the possible hiring of a full-time City mechanic, whose position would then be added to the budget as an addendum item. Mr. Cash was instructed to get information such as salary requirements, educational requirements, and level of expertise in order to be able to find and hire the right person for the

aforementioned Mechanic’s position. The Council then went into closed session, then adjourned afterwards. The Council will next meet on Tuesday, June 29, for their monthly work session. For more information on their meetings, go to www.cityofcherryville. com.

Ironmen end pandemic-shortened 2021 season 14-2 Lose 9-2 to East Surrey Cardinals in second round of 1A playoffs by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Cherryville High Ironmen had a great 2021 baseball season and finished 14-2 overall, after losing 9-2 on June 17, to the East Surrey Cardinals, in the second round of action of the 2021 NCHSAA 1A state high school baseball playoffs. Against Pine Lake Prep In first round action of the 2021 NCHSAA 1A State playoffs, the CHS Ironmen took on the visiting Pride of Pine Lake Prep, and defeated them in what amounted to a nail-biter of a matchup, 6-5. which was another example of CHS’ famous “Ironmen Kardiac Kids” coming back from being down to their second out in the seventh inning stretch and rallying to win this first round playoff game by one run! Coach Scott Heavner started freshman Eli Newsome on the mound in this one and the right-hander didn’t disappoint as he struck out four Pride batters. Newsome walked two batters. Kanon Willis came in the fourth inning to relieve Newsome, and he struck out three Pine Lake batters. The Ironmen had six runs off of nine hits.

Hitters for the CHS ball club were Landon Hahn, who went 3 for 5; walked; had one RBI; and scored on a wild pitch. Collin Robinson was 2 for 4 and was walked twice, and Willis helped himself at the plate by going 2 for 4 as well. Other hitters were seniors Christian Hahn (1-5, 3 RBIs, and a walk), and Ty Heavner (1-5, 1 RBI, and a walk). Will Fowler was walked; Tobias Miller was walked and got on base on an error; and Will Heavner was walked twice. Coach Heavner said he was proud of his men, adding he was happy to be able, like they were, to “…go another round,” in the playoffs. Heavner also noted that he had great respect for the Pine Lake ball club and their coaches. Against East Surrey In this 1A second round state playoffs matchup with the Cardinals of East Surrey, the Ironmen just couldn’t get the rally going in the direction they wanted and lost to the Cardinals in this away game by a score of 9-2, capping a 14-2 pandemic-shortened baseball season in which nine of their players’ had batting averages of over .300. The CHS men managed to score their two runs in the seventh inning and those two runs came off of five hits. The Ironmen committed two errors in this game and left five men stranded on base.

The 2021 CHS Ironmen baseball team are, kneeling, left to right: Brayden Reynolds, Kanon Willis, Collin Robinson, and Numarius Good. Standing, left to right, are: Eli Newsome, Landon Hahn, Quinlan Sanford, Logan Hendrick, Ben Huffstetler, Trip Creason, Dalton Pence, Ty Heavner, Christian Hahn, Chase Miller, Tobias Miller, Will Fowler, and Will Heavner. Not pictured are head coach Scott Heavner; assistant coaches Seth Freeman, Brian Kiser, Michael Whitesides, and AJ Hayes; and manager, Seth Kaler. Pitcher Collin Robinson took the loss in this matchup. Robinson helped himself at the plate by going 2 for 3, while three players, Ty Heavner, Chase Miller, and Kanon Willis were 1 for 3, with Miller getting a double. The loss marked the last time in an Ironmen baseball uniform for five seniors: Dalton Pence, Ty Heavner, Christian Hahn, Ben Huffstetler, and Quinlan Sanford. (Additional information and stats by Susan L. Powell and Danny Eaker)

Tobias Miller fouls one back of a pitch by the Pine Lake Pride pitcher at the Tuesday, June 15, first round game in the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs.
