Senator Kathy Harrington New Year’s Shooter’s exhibit announces retirement at Historical Museum redone Majority Leader Sen. Kathy Harrington (R-Gaston) has announced she will not seek re-election. Sen. Harrington is in her sixth term representing Gaston County in the North Carolina State Senate. She was elected by the Senate Republican Caucus to serve as majority leader for the 2021-22 session. In a media release from her office Sen. Harrington said, “I’m immensely proud of what I“ve been able to accomplish over nearly 12 years in the Senate. It’s been an honor to serve the people of Gaston County. “Looking back at my tenure I can say for a fact that I’ve accomplished all my goals and worked tirelessly on behalf of my constituents. North Carolina is in a vastly different position than it was when I first took office. We have lower taxes, balanced budgets, and working families can send their children to

SEN. KATHY HARRINGTON schools that best fit their educational needs. With that in mind, I felt like it was the right time to retire.” Harrington has been a budget writer in the Senate since 2014. Prior to her work on the budget, she was instrumental in the creation of the Strategic Transportation Investments law, which passed in 2013. The STI law brought a more data-driven approach to transportation project funding and established the State Transportation Improvement Program, which identifies

what projects will receive funding over a 10-year time period. Her time as a budget writer was marked by balanced budgets, regular revenue surpluses, lower taxes for all North Carolinians, and increased funding for education. Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) said, “I’m thankful for Senator Harrington’s leadership in the Senate. She’s been a strong leader in the caucus, helping guide all of our members and offering sound counsel to those who seek it. She’s the epitome of a public servant, always working to make life better for her constituents and thoughtfully addressing issues facing the state. She’ll be missed in the Senate, but I’m excited to see how she continues to serve the state of North Carolina in her retirement.” Sen. Harrington was the first woman to be elected majority leader in the Senate.

The New Year’s Shooters exhibit, once located in the basement of the Cherryville Historical Museum, has now found a new home of sorts… one flight up and in the main hall of the CHM. Rusty Wise, owner of Wise Electric and Mr. Sparky, and the Secretary of the Cherryville New Year’s Shooter’s, Inc. group, said he was approached about perhaps working on a new and upgraded exhibit to better reflect what the groups and their history mean to the community. Said Rusty, “The museum started talking about renovating the basement, including the Shooters exhibit. As discussions progressed, including adding the documentary movie and new items, it was decided to move it upstairs. Many of the Shooters artifacts were deteriorating in the basement, as well as the

As far as knowing what to pick, what to show, how

to show it all, and what to leave off and not show was concerned, “Mr. Wise said, “The museum and both Shooter’s groups provided pictures and information (for the new exhibit). It was a painstaking process of what to include. We went through at least a dozen edits in the process.” Rusty continued, “The See EXHIBIT, Page 2

EXHIBIT From Page 1 museum provided the funds for the storyboards. The Cherryville New Year Shooters provided the new TV monitor. One musket was provided by Dan Ginn in memory of (his son) Joey Ginn. The other artifacts, including an original 1862 musket was given by me and our Shooters group. The painting and case work was done, or brought about, by the museum.” Rusty noted the museum’s intention is to leave the new exhibit where it is permanently. “The shooters are the oldest thing in the museum – older than Cherryville itself,” he said, adding, “That’s the biggest reason we wanted it at the main entrance. There is over 100 years of history there in the exhibit, with pictures and hundreds just with the history itself! The exhibit starts at the beginning of New Year’s shooting in the world even.” Wise said, “Our group’s philosophy is all about history and we have most of the Shooter records thanks to Howell Stroup and other members of our group” though he added both Shooter’s groups are represented in the new exhibit. He continued, “The public has yet to see it as it was just finished. We plan to have a grand opening for the exhibit sometime when the museum wants to.” Additionally, Rusty said he is “really excited” how the “real” crossed guns hanging up turned out as it mimics their logo patch. Museum Director Mrs. Pat Sherrill said of the new exhibit, “This is the best exhibit we have done. The New Year Shooter’s (story) is the town’s oldest history, and since this is our oldest history, it belongs in the first room of the Museum.” Sherrill noted the project has taken “…about six months.” She continued, “We have two shooters groups in Cherryville and it’s my purpose and intention to be sure all history is equally represented. Gary Dellinger (Traditional New Year’s Shooters) and Rusty (Cherryville New Year’s Shooters, Inc.), and Casey at Modern Printing have been most helpful.” Mrs. Sherrill added that the exhibit includes the documentary that Rusty has done. She continued, “This exhibit earned its place because of Howell Stroup, Boozie Dellinger, Don Homesley, Rusty Wise, Gary Dellinger and thousands of loyal shooters who over the years have carried the tradition forward, going out in rain, sleet or snow to wish all a Happy New Year.” For more information on this or other CHM exhibits, their hours of operation, or just general information on the history of Cherryville, please call (704) 435-8011. Ms. Dixon was treated at the scene by GEMS. Est. damages to the Bradshaw vehicle: $750; to the Dixon vehicle: $6,500. The Dixon vehicle was towed to KT Towing by KT Towing. Mr. Bradshaw was cited for disregarding a stop sign. 12-23: A vehicle driven by Joy Everhart Garren, 77, 263 Sellars Rd., Kings Mountain, told the responding officer the sun was in her eyes as she was turning off of First St., onto Depot St., where she collided with a vehicle driven by John Harmon Lackey, 65, 312 W. 2nd St., Cherryville, who was stopped at the stop sign. No injuries reported. Est. damages to the Garren vehicle: $1,000; to the Lackey vehicle: $1,000.

Just Jeepin’4-A Cause Club combines camaraderie; caring Family-oriented club doesn’t do anything you couldn’t bring your kid or dog to by ALAN HODGE CF Media

Folks who own Jeeps do all sorts of things with them from stump jumping to cruising boulevards looking cool. But there’s one group of enthusiasts, Just Jeepin’ 4-A Cause, that uses their vehicles to help others. The club was founded in 2019 by Karen Finley and her husband Larry after he put forth the idea of a Jeep show to help raise funds for the Love Like Lauren Foundation which is a charity helping children with cancer. From there, the club and the number of worthy causes it helps raise awareness for has grown. “We are not your average car club,” Karen said. “We have meaning behind everything we do.” Right now, the club has 1,900 members in North and South Carolina. Many of them live in our area – Belmont, Mt. Holly, Gastonia, and Charlotte to name a few locales. All you need is a Jeep and a willingness to help other folks in need. A classic example of the club in action took

(photo by Alan Hodge) place Dec. 17-19 when a group of members made their way to Kentucky in the aftermath of the deadly tornado outbreak. “You could see the damage on TV but when you are actually there it’s unreal,” Karen said. “It was like going down a regular road and everything was destroyed.” The club gathered food, bottled water, and toys from a variety of local donors and loaded them in two trailers. Donors included Gaston county citizens as well as businesses like Rick’s Body Shop and Keffer Dodge. “We had 60,000 bottles of water,” Karen said. “When we got to Kentucky we took the supplies off the

trailers and loaded them in three Jeeps and two pickup trucks. We drove through neighborhoods handing the stuff out. It’s something I will never forget.” Another recent event that the club took part in was the Dec. 11 dedication of the Mt. Holly Police Memorial Plaza. About 30 club members and their Jeeps formed a procession of honor. The club had also taken part in January 2021 in the “Thin Blue Line” procession in Mt. Holly in honor of MHPD officer Tyler Herndon who lost his life on Dec. 11, 2020 in the line of duty. The club is also a regular participant in area parades. They work closely with the Levine Children’s

In addition, they hold an annual rally where upwards of 400 Jeep owners show their vehicles and generally have a good time for a good cause. “We had Jeeps come from as far away as Virginia and Florida,” Karen said. “We raised $22,000 in four hours for the Love Like Lauren Foundation.” So, got a Jeep? The Cherryville New Year’s Shooter’s Inc., group, who start their “shoot” at Black’s Grill in Cherryville, at midnight, Dec. 31, as they do every year, and also had a “shot” scheduled for Waco, in Cleveland County this year. The group also shoots at various locations throughout the city and the area, and ended their “shot” on Jan. 1, 2022, at Rudisill Stadium, with a tribute to honor the memory and legacy of their late President and long-time shooter, Mr. Carl C. “Boozie” Dellinger. He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Jesus proclaims in Revelation 1:8 (ESV), “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Sometimes, he gets blamed for bad things that are happening, but Jesus makes it clear that we have an enemy who engages in spiritual warfare. This wicked adversary strives to drain, rob, and wreck your life. In John 10:10 (NLT) Jesus states, “Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, I give you praise for Life. You are my life-giving source. I am in awe of your love for me. I am honored that I can fellowship with your Holy Spirit. Who am I that you think of and care for me? I am grateful for the opportunity to know you and grow in this beautiful, loving relationship. I praise you that you have defeated the enemy and have given me authority to rebuke him and resist him as I submit to you. When I do this, he will flee. Thank you God! CHS hoops teams do well in 2021 homegrown Holiday Classic Varsity men 2021 champs; Lady Ironmen take home second place trophy by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Both Ironmen basketball squads – the varsity men and the Lady Ironmen – did well at the 2021 iteration of the homegrown Bud Black/Dennis Tate Holiday Classic, held Monday, Dec. 27, and Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Nixon Gym. The Lady Ironmen got their first-ever win of the 2021-2022 season at the Classic by downing the Piedmont Charter Lady Patriots by a score of 53-44. Said Lady Ironmen head coach Carrie Dalton after the win, “The girls played great tonight. They played well as a team and their chemistry on the court is what we have been looking for all season. Lots of players contributed at putting points on the board and that’s what we need to win ball games. We were very proud of the girls tonight!” That win meant the CHS ladies played the Lady Red Raiders of South Point for the championship the following night, Tuesday, Dec. 28. Scoring in double figures for the CHS ladies against the Lady Patriots were Gabbie McCorkle (20 points); Terayha Bess (13 points); and Krista Davis (10 points). Ceniya Powell had six points and Evionna McDowell had four points. The Lady Ironmen returned on Tuesday night (Dec. 28) and took on the South Point Lady Red Raiders, who defeated the Lady Gryphons of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy on Monday. This time the CHS ladies didn’t fare so well as they lost to the Lady Raiders by a score of 61-34, South Point. They were led in scoring by McCorkle, who had 22 points for the night. Davis had four points; Bess had three points, and Ragan Hovis and Ceniya Powell each had two points apiece. Evionna McDowell scored a point of a free-throw. The Lady Ironmen were presented with the second-place trophy by Dr. Bud Black at the end of their game, along with All-Tournament awards for teammates Bess, McCorkle, and Davis. The varsity men’s games

of Monday and Tuesday night’s (Dec. 27, and Dec. 28) were both wins for the Ironmen as they downed Pinnacle Classical Academy’s Eagles by a score of 76-19; and the Gryphons of TJCA by a score of 73-62 on Tuesday night for the Holiday Classic Tournament championship. Leading scorers in the games against Pinnacle were Landon Hahn (17 points); Carson Kelly (16 points); and Collin Huss (12 points). Jack Mulvey had 7 points; Gavin Cease and Nate Bookout had 6 points apiece; Darrien Floyd scored 4 points; and Chance Hunt, Ethan Honeyman, Khanye Kennedy, and Numarius Good all had 2 points apiece in this matchup, as the Ironmen moved on to the championship round of the Classic against TJCA. Carson Kelly scored a monster 30 points against a tough Gryphons team, followed by teammates Hahn and Mulvey who scored 12 points and 10 points respectively. Rounding out the hot CHS shooting gallery were Numarius Good’s 9 points; Khanye Kennedy’s 7 points; and Gavin Cease’s 5 points. Along with their firstplace trophy for their win in the Holiday Classic, Kelly was named Most Valuable Player for the varsity men and Kennedy, Good, Hahn, Mulvey, and Cease all received All-Tournament plaques. The Ironmen teams played the Warriors of East Gaston on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at home, then travelled to Bessemer City on Friday, Jan. 7, for a game against their rivals. The top players from Cherryville, Bessemer City and Highland Tech, along with those from 13 other schools, will compete in the West/Midwest All-Star Basketball Games March 19, 2022, at Cherokee High School. Members of the event’s executive committee met Oct. 13 to finalize plans for the annual event, which is now in its eighth year, and is directed by longtime Cherryville assistant basketball coach Dr. Bud Black. Both girls’ and boys’ games are scheduled, and the event will occur after the North Carolina High School Athletics Association championship games have been completed. The Midwest schools from which top players

will be drawn are Avery, Bessemer City, Cherryville, Draughn, Highland Tech, Mitchell, Rosman, Mountain Heritage and Thomas Jefferson. The West teams will feature players named to All-Conference teams and voted on by coaches. In the Midwest, one player will be named from each participating school. Teams in the West division are Cherokee, Highlands, Hayesville, Murphy, Hiwassee Dam, Nantahala, Andrews, Blue Ridge, Swain and Robbinsville. Among the officials attending the Oct. 13 virtual meeting were Black, Gaston County Board of Education member Lee Dedmon, treasurer and Cherryville athletics director Scott Harrill and media representative Mike Powell.

How to Get Your Affairs in Order Dear Savvy Senior, I would like to get my personal, legal and ﬁnancial information organized so my kids will know what’s going on when I’m no longer around. Can you offer any tips on the best way to do this? Unorganized Emma

Dear Emma, Organizing your important papers and getting your personal and financial affairs in order is a smart idea and wonderful gift to your loved ones. Here are some tips to get you started. Get Organized The first step in getting your affairs in order is to gather up all your important personal, financial and legal information so you can arrange it in a format that will benefit you now, and your loved ones later. Then you’ll need to sit down and create various lists of important information and instructions of how you want certain things handled when you die or if you become incapacitated. Here’s a checklist of areas you need to focus on. PERSONAL INFORMATION • Contacts: Make a master list of names

and phone numbers of close friends, doctors, and professional advisers such as your lawyer, accountant, broker and insurance agent. • Medical information: Include a list of medications you take, along with any allergies and illnesses. • Personal documents: Include such items as your birth certiﬁcate, Social Security card, marriage license, military discharge papers, etc. • Secured places: List all the places you keep under lock and key such as safe deposit boxes, safe combination, security alarms, etc. • Digital assets: Make a list of all your digital assets, including everything from social media accounts to online banking accounts to home utilities that you manage online. It should include usernames and passwords. Use Rutgers Digital Assets Inventory Worksheet (njaes.rutgers. edu/money/pdfs/digital-assets-worksheet.pdf) as a guide. • Pets: If you have a pet, give instructions for the care of the animal. • End of life: Indicate your wishes for organ and tissue donation and write out your funeral instructions. If you’ve made pre-arrangements with a funeral home include a copy of agreement, their contact information and whether you’ve prepaid

or not.

LEGAL DOCUMENTS • Will, trust and estate plan: Include the original copy of your will and other estate planning documents you’ve made. • Financial power of attorney: This document names someone you trust to handle money matters if you’re incapacitated. • Advance health care directives: This includes a living will and medical power of attorney, which spell out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment when you can no longer make decisions for yourself. FINANCIAL RECORDS • Financial accounts: Make a list of all your bank accounts, brokerage and mutual fund accounts, and any other financial assets you have. • Debts and liabilities: Make a list of any loans, leases or debts you have – mortgages owed, car loans, student loans, medical bills, credit card debts. Also, make a list of all credit and charge cards, including the card numbers and contact information. • Company benefits: List any retirement plans, pensions or health benefits from your current or former employer including the contact information of the benefits

Also be sure to review and update it every year, and don’t forget to tell your kids where they can find it.
