City Manager/Fire Chief Cash’s retirement reception well attended Many came by to wish him well and good fortune in his future by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
City Manager/Fire Chief Jeff Cash’s retirement reception – which took place on Monday, Nov. 29 – was well-attended by his many friends, family members, city employees, and many fire associates with whom he has worked or interacted with over his 40-plus years of local government and community service. They all met at the CFD station house to wish him well in what is sure to be a bright future, filled with plans for family time, resting, reading, and exploring Mr. Cash’s many hobbies
and fire service-related activities. Fire service and community service is in the blood of the Cash family, as is evidenced by his long service to the Cherryville community; his wife’s service as a CFD wife and mother to two young men – Chad and Quentin – whose lives also are entrenched in working for the fire service and their communities in which they live. According to an earlier Eagle article City Manager/ Fire Chief Cash, announced his retirement as Fire Chief and City Manager to become effective on Jan. 1, 2022. Also announced in that same article is the upcoming promotion of Assistant Fire Chief Jason Wofford to Fire Chief, effective Jan. 2, 2022. For the four-plus decades
Chief Cash has served the City of Cherryville, his career at the Cherryville Fire Department says it all, starting his fire services life (in earnest) in December of 1981. Cash was later promoted to Fire Chief in 1984, and then promoted to City Manager/Fire Chief in 2018. When asked how it felt to have so many friends, and well-wishers come out to share you great day, he replied, “It was a great day and I was so blessed to have so many family members, peers, colleagues, citizens, and friends come to my reception drop-in. It was an especially nice event and I thank Assistant Chief Wofford, the troops, Brittany, and my wife, Cynthia for hosting the event. It was also very special to me that some of the vendors we See CASH, Page 8A
City Council’s work session discussions pave way for December regular topics by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
In the Tuesday, Nov. 30 City Council work session Council heard first from Mr. Will Puckett, speaking for the Cherryville Little Ironmen organization. Mr. Puckett noted how their organization was finishing up on what he termed a “positive note this season”, in that when he came into the program, they had about $3,000 on hand but that they now are ending the year with $28,000. He also spoke about the organization’s upcoming basketball program, noting that they are allowed to use Mt. Zion Baptist Church’s gym for practices and such. Mr. Puckett was

Two-thirds of likely N.C. voters support Opportunity Scholarships CHERRYVILLE’S “A VERY CHERRY WHOVILLE CHRISTMAS!” filled the City’s Mini-park and Main Street area last Friday night, Dec. 3, as folks came from miles around to see the Grinch and his Dr. Seuss-related characters and friends. Chamber President Mary Beth Tackett said they were glad to be back after COVID shut down the 2020 event. The event was from 6 to 10 p.m. Cherryville’s Christmas Parade is Saturday, Dec. 11, starting at 10 a.m. See more photos on page 4A. (photos by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media)

A new poll from a statewide school-choice advocacy group shows that nearly two-thirds of likely general election voters in North Carolina support the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Sixty-two percent of respondents favor the scholarship, compared to 28 percent who oppose it. The poll, commissioned by Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina, found an enthusiasm gap, as well, with 36 percent of those in favor of Opportunity Scholarships expressing that support “strongly,”

Gov. Roy Cooper and state health secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen addressed the nascent Omicron variant Tuesday, Nov. 30, but they were reticent to raise alarms, in contrast to local media reports over the past couple of days. Rather, they pushed vaccines. Cohen, in one of her last COVID-19 briefings alongside Cooper, even offered a novel catchphrase: “Don’t wait to vaccinate.” Cohen on Tuesday announced her resignation as secretary of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Cooper quickly appointed Kody Kinsley, chief deputy secretary for health and leader of COVID operations, to succeed Cohen starting Jan. 1, 2022. Cohen, 43, has led North Carolina’s operational response to COVID-19, including hospital, testing, and tracing capacities. She has been Cooper’s top policy adviser on the pandemic. Kinsley doesn’t have a background in medicine but has significant experience in mental and behavioral health, which, Cooper said, should continue to be a focus for care as the pandemic – and accompanying restrictions – wanes. Some 72 percent of the state’s adult population have received at least one dose of the COVID jab, and about 68 percent are fully vaccinated, the health de-

Cohen said numbers are still incomplete because fewer people were tested over the Thanksgiving holiday. “We’re all painfully aware we haven’t fully defeated this pandemic,” Coo-

per said. Health experts, nationally and locally, say that may never happen. The latest media panic is centered around the Omicron variant, first detected in South Africa and identified in patients throughout Europe. “All viruses change over time,” Cohen said, “and COVID 19 is no exception.”
The variant hasn’t been identified in the U.S., but health experts agree it’s almost surely here. “If this motivates people … please go and get vaccinated. Get off the internet and on the phone with your doctor,” Cooper said. Cohen probably isn’t done with the COVID briefings, but, just in case, she said all the usual things for a departing public official, at the same time offering little insight into her plans. “It’s been an honor of a lifetime to serve this state at such an important moment in history,” she said. “It’s the right time for me personally, and it’s the right time for our team.” Cohen, who served under President Obama and for five years for Cooper, said she hopes she and her family can stay in North Carolina. She says she has no political aspirations. “I am not planning to run for office,” she said, though admitted she’s exploring “a range of opportunities.” Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, in a statement, said Cohen’s leadership throughout her tenure has helped the state navigate turbulent times. “She made herself available to legislators to answer questions and kept us informed about issues facing the department,” Berger said. “She was also instrumental in successfully implementing Medicaid transformation. I want to thank her for her service to the state and wish her well in her future endeavors."

sponsible budgets have led to North Carolina moving up from the bottom of the pack in business climate rankings to near the top. I remain committed to making North Carolina the best state in which to live, work, and do business.” NC Free Enterprise Foundation (NCFREE) is the premiere research organization in the state providing non-partisan analysis of the political landscape and its impact on North Carolina’s business environment. “Our 2021 Legislative Business Rating (LBR) evaluates legislators on their philosophical understanding of free enterprise,” said Anna Beavon Gravely, NCFREE Executive Director. “Each year when the NCFREE Research Committee meets, we ask one key question: Does this vote support business and advance free enterprise in the state?” “Legislation considered for our LBR predominately
focused on regulation. As North Carolina grows and builds for the future, regulation will continue to be a major issue for the business community. In this first session of a new decade the question – can North Carolina maintain the unprecedented growth of the last decade – remains. Reducing the regulatory burden on the business community to increase competition and choice is the key to answering that question, and this year was a step in the direction of working toward tough, nuanced solutions,” Gravely said. The ratings for the senators looked at 18 recorded votes, including votes for “Putting North Carolina Back to Work,” “An Act to Reemploy NC’s Workforce,” and “Energy Solutions for North Carolina.” Additional information on the methodology behind the ratings is available at ncfree.org.

Christmas Carols As we step into the holiday season, one of my favorite parts of Christmas is the songs. They bring back fond childhood memories of family, friends, and church gatherings which were all filled with food, laughter, and a lot of singing. Music, especially singing, is a great way to express joy. James 5:13 states, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.” The good news DANYALE PATTERSON is you don’t have to sound good to sing praises to God. King David proclaims in Psalm 98:4, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises”! One Christmas song – Carol of the Bells – reminds me how much joy music brings us. As we are listening to the song, it feels like we do not have a care in the world. Here are a few of the lyrics:
about the church’s growth and he points to a power-duo ministerial couple – Aquila and Priscilla. They were really special people. Essentially, they ran a huge underground church during a time of government overreach. Heroes exist in the Bible as much as they exist in 2021. Have you ever asked God to give you a friend to brace the winds of life? God gave the mighty Silas to Paul as a comrade in battle. Silas was also a Roman citizen, which came in handy during their ultimate arrest for preaching the
good news of Jesus. The list of heroes goes on. Despite the fact that these characters and our own loved ones can be incredible men and women note one very important point of doctrine: followers of God do not pray for the spirit of these heroes to empower their walk. Christians never pray on the merit of any saint, angel, pastor, politician, or loved one. We are not commanded to do so nor are we ever shown examples of such behavior. When I am against the wall, I don’t ask the spirit of Job to rest upon
me nor do I ask the spirit of Arnold Palmer to help me improve my driving game. When I pastor, I don’t ask for the spirit of Spurgeon, Aquila, or Silas to rest upon me the way a superstitious baseball player carries Babe Ruth’s picture or a trumpet player plays a Louis Armstrong-style trumpet. Even when Elisha desired to be like his mentor it was always with the understanding that the Spirit of Almighty God alone is the One that takes what is dead and makes it alive, what is broken to be whole, and what is lost to
be found. Now, this does not mean that we Christians cannot have heroes or mentors. But when it comes to prayer, we pray solely on the merit and finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Not because that’s all we have, but because that’s all we need! Jesus’ name and His name alone is given among men whereby we might be saved. So, “when you find yourself in time of trouble” remember to ask our Father to send the Counselor in Jesus’ name – He is enough!

One seems to hear Words of good cheer From everywhere Filling the air. Did you know that God enjoys singing and music? After all, he is the creator and originator of it. Zephaniah 3:17 states, “The LORD your God is in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” I often ponder on how much our Heavenly Father loves and delights in his children. He takes pleasure in his people. The Lord is full of compassion and tender mercy. His love draws us close and ignites in us a passion to worship him. In Psalm 150:1-6, King David – a passionate worshiper of God – believed in utilizing all the instruments to praise God including the cymbals. He exclaimed, “Praise ye he Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high-sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, you’re so kind and tenderhearted to those who don’t deserve it and so patient with people who fail you! Your love is like a flooding river overflowing its banks with kindness. It’s hard to comprehend this love. It makes me want to sing and give you the praise due unto your name. Thank you for your great love for me. I appreciate that you sing over me. Lord, I will sing to you songs of worship and adoration. There is no one like you in all the earth. In Jesus’ name I pray – Amen.” DanyalePatterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. VOTERS From Page 1A the scholarships will now be worth up to $5,900 each annually. They also will be expanded to new families due to an increased income threshold needed to qualify. “In our era of deep division and hyper-partisanship, how many issues garner as much support as we are seeing for the Opportunity Scholarship Program?” said Mike Long, president of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina in a statement. “The reason is simple: Opportunity Scholarships allow low- and middle-income families to send their child to an educational choice that’s right for them. This program puts into reality the belief that we should fund students, not systems and bureaucracies. North
CITY From Page 1A morals, teamwork, and things that help round them out as they grow up to be good citizens. Puckett said he doesn’t foresee the City having to give a great deal of money to that end, but he still wanted to bring it before the Council officially. Mayor H.L. Beam replied that this would be something that could be discussed at Council’s next regular session. Council members voted on and approved the adoption of the 2021 General Records Schedule: Local Government Agencies, and Program Records Schedule: Local Government Agencies, i.e., the retention of older records and schedules by cities and municipalities. The document covers how said records are either retained or destroyed or otherwise disposed of, and noted the following, “In accordance with the provisions of Chapters 121 and 132 of the General Statutes of North Carolina, it is agreed that the records do not and will not have further use or value for of-

Carolinians realize this and overwhelmingly support the program.” The PEFNC poll found that a majority of parents would prefer to send their child to a non-traditional public school if cost and geography weren’t factors. Fifty-two percent would choose a school choice option like a private school, charter school, or home school, compared to 38 percent who would choose a traditional public. The survey also addressed election-related matters, including voters’ viewpoint on the two open seats on the N.C. Supreme Court in the 2022 mid-terms. The results of that election could sway whether the state’s top court upholds or strikes down the Opportunity Scholarship Program. On that question, the survey found that respondents
were 2-to-1 opposed to the idea of the N.C. Supreme Court declaring the scholarships unconstitutional. Respondents reported they would vote for a Republican rather than a Democrat for the two open seats by a 51 percent to 39 percent margin. As for likely voters’ views on teachers’ unions, 39 percent had an unfavorable view, compared to 36 percent with favorable and 20 percent with no opinion. “What we are finding is that the past two years have been a breakout moment for the school choice movement in our state,” said Long. “Even while more and more parents are clamoring for options, the real and substantial progress we are seeing continues to be fought tooth and nail by the education establishment, which wants parents to only have one option – their lo-
cally zoned public school. Here is what parents and voters are telling us: That type of thinking does not reflect the varied options and demands of our 21st-century life. School choice is here to stay.” “Add the latest PEFNC poll to the countless number showing strong support for parental school choice across demographic groups. And elected officials have taken notice. North Carolina lawmakers recently approved transformative improvements to the state’s private school scholarship programs. These changes will open the door to thousands of families previously ineligible for assistance due to program limitations.” Dr. Terry Stoops is director of the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation. In addressing school choice, Stoops was clear and suc-
cinct. “Opponents of parental school choice are hilariously out of touch with mainstream support for public and private educational options,” Stoops told Carolina Journal. “School choice is an election issue. Those who openly support it are more likely to win. Those who vocally oppose it are more likely to lose. Candidates for elected office should orient their campaigns accordingly.” The poll – conducted Nov. 6-8 by the consulting firm The Differentiators – surveyed 500 likely voters in the General Election. Thirty-seven percent of those polled were registered Democrats, 33 percent registered Republicans, and 29 percent registered Independents or with other affiliations. In a statement,
Sen. Deanna Ballard, R-Watauga, said, “A private education shouldn’t be available only to those who can afford it. The Opportunity Scholarship program empowers parents with the resources to send their children to the same school as better off families if they choose.” The far-left NCAE is suing to kill the program, a GOP news release says, even as polling shows it’s wildly popular and the number of Opportunity Scholarship recipients has grown exponentially since 2013. Ballard continued, “This is going to the battle line of the next year: parents versus bureaucrats. I side with empowering parents by letting education money follow the child. We need to fund students, not systems.”
ficial business, research, or reference purposes after the respective retention periods specified herein and are authorized to be destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the agency or official having custody of them without further reference to or approval of either party to this agreement.” Council also approved authorizing the Tryon Resolves Chapter of the DAR to designate Cherryville Memorial Cemetery as their location cemetery for their Wreaths Across America event, to be held at the cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 12 noon. The Tryon Resolves were also authorized to fly a drone over the cemetery to photograph and video the event as well. Planning and Zoning Director Derrick Mackey spoke with Council and went over the Nuisance and Abatement Properties standards, showing photos of a few of the properties he wants the City to look at and consider for further action by the owners. Assistant Fire Chief Jason Wofford asked Council to add Fire Department Car 73 (a 2006 Ford Expedition 4x4 with
over 150,000 miles on it and which has had a multitude of problems/issues) to the surplus inventory list, which Council did, approving the addition. Said AC Wofford, “The vehicle in question has been used for 15 years and died a few weeks ago. (Chief) Jeff (Cash) went ahead and gave me the (Chevrolet) Tahoe to use for incident command” and Wofford noted he has been using it ever since. The CFD have already put emergency lights, a portable radio, and incident command items on the Tahoe, and AC Wofford added the vehicle is due to be lettered as Fire Car 73 soon. Council also talked at length about the Stroup Acres. As per information on the Council notes from the staff report on the public hearing, on Nov. 8, the City Council voted to continue the public hearing. Updates to the Development Conditions received by Council that include, as noted in the “Conclusion” section of the report, “Several updates to the development conditions” that were “…provided by the applicant, however, several items remain under issues
to consider.” The Council will continue the public hearing of this topic at the Dec. 13 regular session. Also discussed were appropriations for the City that will come from the state budget. Prior to his retirement, City Manager Jeff Cash led the lobbying to get these funds though Finance Director Dixie
Wall noted the City hasn’t yet received the funds. The fund amounts discussed in the work session and to be further discussed at the regular session meeting in December are as follows: $350,000 for Westgate Park; $22,800, for a storage facility at the Recreation Department; and $50,000 as a local government grant.
In other business City Clerk Paige Green noted there is to be a cemetery clean-up on Monday, Dec. 10. Council voted to go into closed session. Mrs. Green said no votes were taken nor was any decision made on the topic/topics discussed.

is eligible for a booster six months after their second shot. Those who had the Johnson & Johnson vaccination can get a booster two months after their initial shot. The immunity to COVID19 conferred by the vaccine wanes over time, but a new study from Northwestern University shows a booster may give the highest level of antibodies, even more than natural immunity from infection in combination with initial doses. “I encourage all adults to get their COVID-19 booster for safer holiday gatherings with loved ones,” Dr. Mandy Cohen, secretary of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, said in a press release. “With the recent authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages 5-11, now nearly everyone in the family can be vaccinated or boosted. Don’t wait to vaccinate.” People with weakened immune systems – such as people fighting cancer or chronic kidney, liver or lung diseases – need an additional dose to build immunity against COVID-19. Immunocompromised people have been eligible to receive an additional dose of the same vaccine 28 days after their second shot, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Federal agencies began recommending additional doses for immunocompromised people starting Aug. 13. As of Nov. 22, 5.9 million state residents were fully vaccinated, either with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the two-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, according to NCDHHS. Of those, 1.3 million North Carolinians had received an extra shot by the same date, according to a DHHS spokeswoman. Nationwide, nearly 37.5 million people have received an extra shot, or 1-in-5 of those who are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. The boosters may stunt the spread of the virus, which has overwhelmed hospitals across the nation. In recent months, cases have climbed among children, who can suffer from a rare but serious condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C, which can cause heart or other organ problems that require a doctor’s care. So far, 247 cases of MIS-C have been reported in North Carolina, according to DHHS. North Carolina’s positivity rate – the percentage of positive tests compared to all tests – has crept up from a low of 3.7 percent two weeks ago to 7.5 percent on Nov. 23. The risk for unvaccinated people is high. Unvaccinated people are 25 times more likely to die after getting COVID-19 than those who have been vaccinated, according to DHHS’ respiratory surveillance report. While 3-in-4 state residents have been vaccinated, more than 85 percent of those who have ended up in the state’s intensive care units have been unvaccinated. For more information about the COVID-19 vaccines, visit covid19.ncdhhs. gov/vaccines.

County’s public health to provide state-funded 2021-22 CNYSI meetings and events $100 COVID-19 vaccination incentive The Cherryville New Years. Inc. group noted their remaining meetings are as follows: Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m., at the Cherryville American Legion Post 100 building, 215 N. Pink St., Cherryville. On Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m., there will be drawings for musket raffle, food etc., at the Pythian
Lodge, on Paul H. Beam Rd., Cherryville. On Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022 at 12 a.m., Friday night, their annual shoot will start at Black’s Grill, heralding New Year’s 2022! On Friday, Jan. 28, 2022 at 6 p.m., there will be the 2022 Annual Host Dinner at the Cherryville American Legion Post 100, on Pink Street.
County public health officials said that, starting Aug. 6, anyone who gets a COVID-19 vaccine at Gaston County’s Public Health Dept. can get a $100 gift card for their time. The gift cards are funded by the State of North Carolina in an effort to encourage more people to get vaccinated. In addition, anyone who drives an unvaccinated person to get their shot will receive a state-funded $25 gift card. You must be 18 or older to receive the incentive. The incentives are part of the state’s Summer Card program and come as Gaston County Public Health aims to boost local vaccination rates amid rapidly
rising case counts in the community. Currently, 37 percent of Gaston County residents are fully vaccinated and 40 percent are partially vaccinated against the virus. Statewide, 46 percent of the population is vaccinated. What’s good news, said Public Health Director Steve Eaton, is that the vaccines against COVID-19 are showing tremendous protection against the virus. “The simple truth is the vaccines work,” Eaton said. “We are excited to be able to offer the incentive provided by the state in an effort to increase the number of our residents getting vaccinated.” The gift cards are available
on a first-come, first-served basis. The county’s Public Health Department will be posting to its Facebook page when more gift cards become available and when it has run out for the day. The Public Health Department has all three vaccines – the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson – available. The vaccines are free, regardless of insurance status. Those entering the health department will be required to wear a mask during the duration of their visit there. Residents do not need an appointment to get a vaccine. They are available to any resident over the age of 12 Monday through Friday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and
12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the health department facility at 991 W. Hudson Blvd., in Gastonia. More information about vaccination opportunities can be found at GastonSaves.com.
Traditional New Year’s Shooters meeting dates The officers of the Traditional New Year’s Shooters said their group will meet every Tuesday in December, at 7 p.m., at Hugh’s Pond Volunteer Fire Department, located at 1442 Tot Dellinger Rd. outside of Cherryville.

Once again, I am a very blessed individual.” Chief Cash’s wife and two sons said they were glad to see the day come as they know what Jeff has given to the city and to the fire department and how much he was looking forward to retirement. Mrs. Cash said she knows retiring from one’s lifestyle and passion is a bittersweet thing for Jeff, but
she also knows he will, after resting a bit, finds ways to get involved with his love of fire science in some manner. Jeff’s sons and their wives said they are glad for him that he is retiring and will get to spend more time with his family and doing some traveling. “He’s really been looking forward to this,” noted Chad and Quentin. Though he will be officially retired after the first of the year, Chief Cash said he has a few things in the works, and hopes, after he takes time to rest up and relax, to work on those projects and such. Said Chief Cash, “I will
continue to do some side work with my consulting business, Bucket Brigade Consulting, LLC. I also may have an opportunity in the safety division with NASCAR. I also have been contacted by Jackie Ireland of VFIS Insurance about a position with their company. For the month of December, I simply plan to do a lot of resting and reading. I also plan to spend time with all my family for the Christmas season/holidays. Cynthia and I are going on a trip in late December.” As for having any last minute words or instructions for AC Wofford and the guys at CFD, or for the
Retiring City Manager/Fire Chief Jeff Cash talking over old times with retired Cherryville Fire Department Captain Wendell Poole. City of Cherryville’s staff with whom he has worked, Chief Cash said, “Always provide the citizens and visitors of Cherryville with the highest, quality level of customer service possible. Always operate by keeping firefighter safety paramount (at all times); to keeping Cherryville citizens safe, and God bless the fire department and their families. This also includes all of the city’s wonderful, committed, dedicated, professional employees. They are the city’s most critical asset!” Assistant Chief Jason Wofford said, “Chief Cash will most definitely be missed. I, along with
all our members, will always regard his leadership, friendship, and love of our community as a guide to carry on our service.” Dixie Wall, the City of Cherryville’s Finance Director, said of Mr. Cash, “Jeff was a dedicated and professional leader. I enjoyed working under his tenure and appreciate his encouragement and trust in my role as Finance/Administrative Utility Director for the City of Cherryville. I wish him the best and hope he can enjoy his retirement.” Councilman Gary Freeman thanked Mr. Cash for his long service to Cherryville, adding, “He put
Cherryville on the map, as far as fire science and firefighting are concerned. As city manager, he saved the city money and guided us (the Council) and helped spearhead the research on the bond referendum.” City councilwoman Jill Parker-Puett said, “He is going to be missed. He has been quite a leader in the fire services and is highly respected by his peers.” Mayor H.L. Beam, III said of Mr. Cash’s retirement, “I would say it has been an honor working with him, and I am happy for Jeff and his family, and wish them all the best!”

Ironmen men’s varsity hoops team currently 3-1 overall by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
The 2021 CHS Ironmen varsity men’s roundball team appears to be off to a decent start as they are currently 3-1, though their coaches know the season is still young, much like the team itself. Head coach Scott Harrill noted his Ironmen traveled to Shelby last week (Tuesday, Nov. 30) to take on former Ironmen point guard Darius Howell’s Pinnacle Eagles. Harrill said, “The Ironmen were led by Landon Hahn with 12 points, and Carson Kelly with 11 points,” scoring in double digits for the night. Rounding out the scorers in this matchup were Gavin Cease, who had 9 points, 10 rebounds; Collin Huss with 9 points; Numerius Good with 8 points and 5 assists; Chance Hunt with 7 points; Jack Mulvey with 9 points; and Ethan Honeyman with 2 points. Harrill was glad to see the Ironmen start the season at 2-0 with the victory. Things were a little different with the CHS men’s second crack at the North Gaston Wildcats, who handed the Ironmen a 65-57 loss in this road game. Coach Harrill noted the Ironmen came back from being down 12 points to start the fourth quarter, only to go cold the last three minutes and drop a close one to the Wildcats. Harrill said Carson Kelly led the Ironmen with 17 points, and Numerius Good’s 12 points, and Landon Hahn’s 11 points were the double-digit scorers in this one. Gavin Cease had 4, Jack Mulvey 6, Darrien Floyd 2, and Cooper Sloan had 5 points to round things out for the Ironmen. The West Lincoln Rebels came to town on Friday,
Lady Ironman Gabbie McCorkle dribbles around the block by her teammate, Evionna McDowell, as she looks for someone to pass the ball to. (photos by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media) Dec. 3, and started things off by handing the JV men and the Lady Ironmen teams losses. The JV’s lost to the JV Rebels 58-66, while the Lady Ironmen lost to the Lady Rebels by a score of 17-59. The leading scorer for the ladies was Gabbie McCorkle, who had 7 points, followed by Krista Davis and Evionna McDowell who each had 3 points. Terayha Bess and Ragan Hovis each had 2 points apiece. The Ironmen varsity men then took to the court and proceeded to do what they do best; start slow, then kick out the jams once they find their rhythm and shooting lanes. That said, they plow into much larger teams with a speed and accuracy that stuns and baffles their opponents to the point of upending any sort of strategy that opposing team might have come into Nixon Gym with in the first place. The hot shooter on the night was Carson Kelly with 21 points, followed by Landon Hahn with 17 points. Hahn’s athleticism on the Bud Black Court last Friday night was astounding as he, at one point, literally snatched a passed ball right
out of the anticipating hands of the Rebel player and took it down court for the CHS basket. Senior player Jack Mulvey, equally athletic, scored 12 points, followed by Numerius Good and Khanye Kennedy’s 7 points each. Seniors Cooper Sloan and Gavin Cease each scored 3 points apiece and Collin Huss had 1 point on a free throw. Coach Harrill said the boys played really hard, adding, “I am so happy with the progress the young team has made.” He continued, “The student section was electric and brought so much passion to the game. We can’t wait to be back home Tuesday night (against Fred Foard) and at then back at West Lincoln on Friday.” The Ironmen played Fred T. Foard at Nixon on Tuesday, Dec. 7, and will be away at West Lincoln on Friday, Dec. 10, with the JV game starting at 4:30 p.m.; the Lady Ironmen at 6 p.m., and the varsity men right after their game. (Additional info and stats by Susan L. Powell and CHS AD Scott Harrill)
Heavily defended by the West Lincoln player, Lady Ironman Ragan Hovis prepares to shoot a basket.
CHS Lady Ironman Evionna McDowell takes her foul shots in last Friday’s home game against the Lady Rebels of West Lincoln.
Ironman Landon Hahn shoots a free throw against the Rebels of West Lincoln.
Ironmen wrestlers do well for CHS in recent matches Carson Kelly (#12) in his now-familiar stance just before he shoots a three-pointer. Kelly had six three-pointers against the West Lincoln varsity men.
CHS Ironmen player Numerius Good makes a move against the West Lincoln defender at last Friday’s home game.
Three CHS Ironmen wrestlers had a great match in last Saturday’s Ironmen Open, held in Cherryville. Their Head Coach is Matt Powers. Mason Grindstaff, Chase Miller, and Tobias Miller had a stellar day as Grindstaff defeated Shelby’s Izreal Wrighton in a 13-7 decision in the 182pound title match at the CHS-hosted Open. Grindstaff’s teammate on the mats, Chase Miller defeated Lincolnton Wolves wrestler, Josh White (a 10-7 division), to earn the top honors in the 160-pound weight class. Ironman Tobias Miller won his match over South Point wrestler Thien Nguyen in the 195-pound division. Miller’s win came via a fall to earn him first place at the CHShosted Open. These three young athletes also played football for Coach Tim Pruitt and the CHS Ironmen in the 2021 season. Chase Miller and To-
bias Miller also did well at the Gaston-Lincoln Tournament on Nov. 23. Chase took the 160-pound
title with a major decision and Tobias won the 195pound title by a fall.

Kiser continued, “Terayha left her mark on the volleyball record book, finishing her career fifth in blocks, and eighth in career kills.” Rileigh was named to the All-Conference squad for the third time, said Coach Kiser, adding she joins Bayleigh Henley as the only Lady Ironmen to receive that honor. For the season Rileigh had 516 assists, led the team with 272 digs and
87 serve aces, had an 85.7 serve percentage, and chipped in 73 kills from the setter position. As a junior, Rileigh has the single season and career record for serve aces, went over the 1,000 assists mark – done only by Henley – and is currently third all-time in defensive digs. Kiser said these two Lady Ironmen deserved to be honored and she was proud of them both for the successful season that they had. Coach Kiser also noted this about her two All-Conference players, “These two ladies led us in all categories. Rileigh led us in number of aces, assists, and digs while Terayha led us in kills. Terayha also was our all-time leading scorer, and I have to say, both of them were big leaders for us on the court.” The Lady Ironmen’s home court is the Bud Black Court in Nixon Gym.

The top players from Cherryville, Bessemer City and Highland Tech, along with those from 13 other schools, will compete in the West/Midwest All-Star Basketball Games March 19, 2022, at Cherokee High School. Members of the event’s executive committee met Oct. 13 to finalize plans for the annual event, which is now in its eighth year, and is directed by longtime Cherryville assistant basketball coach Dr. Bud Black. Both girls’ and boys’ games are scheduled, and the event will occur after the North Carolina High School Athletics Association championship games have been completed. The Midwest schools from which top players will
be drawn are Avery, Bessemer City, Cherryville, Draughn, Highland Tech, Mitchell, Rosman, Mountain Heritage and Thomas Jefferson. The West teams will feature players named to All-Conference teams and voted on by coaches. In the Midwest, one player will be named from each participating school. Teams in the West division are Cherokee, Highlands, Hayesville, Murphy, Hiwassee Dam, Nantahala, Andrews, Blue Ridge, Swain and Robbinsville. Among the officials attending the Oct. 13 virtual meeting were Black, Gaston County Board of Education member Lee Dedmon, treasurer and Cherryville athletics director Scott Harrill and media representative Mike Powell.
