Cherryville Fire Department Captain Chris “Pudge” Cash has decided – after more than three decades of selfless

service to his beloved hometown – to retire. Cash, younger brother to retired Chief Jeff Cash, started his career in the fire service, he said, as a young lad while he was still in high school. “I started in 1984 at Hugh’s Pond Volunteer Fire Department when I was 16, then went to Cherryville’s Fire Department,” he said. “(The late) Joe Vandyke was

the chief then and it was him that developed the junior firefighter program.” “Pudge” graduated from CHS in 1985 and never looked back, so far as getting more firmly entrenched in the career he loves so much, and getting to serve others is, for him, just more icing on the professional cake. City Council held their Monday night, Feb. 14 regular session and, after approving the minutes from previous meetings, kicked things off with an update from Piedmont Lithium (PL) spokesperson, Malissa Gordon. Gordon said she had two quick updates for Council on how things were progressing with their State Mining permit processes, which, she added, “…are still under review.” Gordon noted that after they get through the State Mining permit processes there will still be further rounds, as many as four altogether possibly, the company will have to go through. Gordon also mentioned a PL donation to the Cherryville High School Education Foundation that she said will help students and teachers greatly, adding that they also are working with Gaston College and their Apprentice Program as well as how to direct CHS

Council was asked to consider upset bids on a city-owned lot on the corner of W. Main and Mulberry Streets. City Manager Brian Dalton said, “The council voted to accept the offer to sell the lot to Cherryville Main Street LLC for $30,000. This property will be converted to a parking lot in the future.” Chamber of Commerce

Board of Directors chairman Pete Craft gave the 2021 End-of-Year Chamber report to Council noting they had two ribbon cuttings, two dedications and groundbreakings, and two virtual seminars; took part in a number of school- and business-related events as well as a number of school partnerships, all positively highlighting the Cherryville community. Gaston County’s, and CHS’, winningest basketball coach – Scott Harrill – is like a mirror in that when the sun of a milestone like 400 wins shines on him, he directs the bright light of it back to shine on others. Others like God; like

his family, like his fellow coaches, and like all the many hoops players he has had the privilege to coach through the years. And he is a very humble, spiritual man, who knows he isn’t perfect, but one who really, REALLY enjoys playing the game of basketball and teaching others how to be good at it, and at the game of life. The Eagle caught up with Coach recently and asked him the age-old journalistic question: how did it feel to get that 400th win? The answer wasn’t surprising at all; it was typical Coach Harrill. “It really felt like any other game, in the sense of you prepare so much for each

game, you don’t think as much about the win total over everything else. I know God has truly blessed us so much here. Faith, family, and basketball really has to be what we live by.” He continued, “It feels good knowing how blessed we have been at Cherryville. My relationship with God keeps me grounded and focused on trying my best to have a servant’s attitude. We (Coach Tate, Coach Griggs, and Coach Black) all work as one. This one is for all of us. The Cherryville Family YMCA’s new digs looks to be coming along nicely, and if all goes according to plans, they hope to be open very, very soon. That is certainly the hope

and dream of Gaston County YMCA CEO Sharon Padgett, who said on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in a brief tour of the new building, located in what used to be the old Chrysler/Plymouth dealership building, then the Tropical Tanning building, on Mountain Street. The new “Y”, she said, will have all of the member amenities and work-out gear as did their former “Y”, but will have it and more in a more spacious building, with more parking for the members and guests, as well as staff.

Melinda Houser Yount CHERRYVILLE – Melinda Kay Houser Yount, 79, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022 at Atrium Health – Cleveland, in Shelby. Melinda was born in Gaston County, N.C., on Oct. 20, 1942, daughter of the late Jack Houser and Nora Belle Gates Houser. She was retired from Gaston County Schools and worked at Cherryville Elementary School as a teacher’s assistant. Melinda was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cherryville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Teresa Kay Yount. Survivors include a son, Greg Yount and wife, Wendy of Asheville; a daughter, Traci Yount of Vale; four grandchildren, Alec Yount (Emily) of Morganton; Colin Yount of Atlanta, GA; Sloane Yount of Asheville; and Madison Wright (Dustyn) of Lincolnton. Visitation was from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 at First United Methodist Church of Cherryville. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Zack Christy, and Rev. Randy Heffner officiating. The family had a private burial at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. CASH From Page 1 Chris, his older brother, Jeff, a couple of uncles, a number of sons and cousins, and, well, you get the picture… have all chosen to, some way, somehow, get active and help folks by being firefighters either in Cherryville, Shelby, Charlotte, or other towns nearby. Pudge had his retirement ceremony on Friday, Feb. 11, and many of his family, friends, and fellow smoke-eaters came by during the 3 to 5 p.m. “drop-in” event just to say a kind word and to wish him well in his retirement. Mayor H.L. Beam, III said probably what was on just about everyone’s mind that day when he said, “I’m gonna miss him! He’s one of the good ones!” Mayor Beam talked about Pudge’s well-known humorous made-up awards and their presentations during the annual CFD Awards and Christmas Banquet, saying that he always made people laugh. Presenting Pudge with his Captain’s helmet was Assistant Fire Chief Coby Heffner. Said AC Heffner, “Pudge was my first (fire) captain, and he has meant a lot to me over the years I have been here.” This brought a tear or three to Pudge’s eyes as he remembered how young Colby came up in the ranks, first as a junior firefighter, then a Driver/Engineer, then later moving through the ranks to eventually become the Assistant Chief upon Jason Wofford becoming Fire Chief.

A student at East Gaston High School, her college plans include attending Western Carolina University to participate in the university’s music program and pursue a degree in sports medicine; she eventually wants to become an athletic trainer for the NFL. For the talent competition, she performed a selection on the clarinet. Her community service project focuses on domestic violence prevention. As Gaston County’s titleholders for 2022, the six young women will make public appearances, promote

their community service project, and compete for the Miss North Carolina and Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen titles in June. The state competition is set for June 23-25 at the High Point Theater. In the Miss division, the list of contestants included Deoveune Chappell, Bailey Clayton, Olivia Taggart, Rebecca DeMar (runner-up), and Deanna Glenn (congeniality winner). The Outstanding Teen contestants included Morgan Kimrey, Natalie Dail (runner-up), Hailey McClellan, and Savannah Royals. The Miss division is open to young women ages 19-26 who live, work, or attend school in Gaston and nine surrounding counties. The Outstanding Teen division is for young women ages 13-18 who are North Carolina residents; the teen contestants do not have to live in a particular county to enter. The Miss Gastonia Scholarship Association sponsored the pageant. The contestants competed for $218,700 in cash and in-kind scholar-

Job seekers and employers throughout the region will connect at a Career Expo hosted by Venture Church in Dallas at 800 E. Main St., on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. More than 20 employers from Gaston, Lincoln, and Cleveland counties, as well as Charlotte, are already on tap for the event, noted Venture Church lead pastor Austin Rammell. Said Rev. Rammell, “The idea for the job fair grew from hearing about the needs in the local community. Some businesses have had to close down because they can’t hire enough people.” Rammell continued, “And, we see lots of people who need a job or want a better job. Our Career Expo is a way to help both.” Pastor Rammell said he’s expecting a wide variety of employers from across the region seeking employees for positions from entry level to management. “Both Caromont and Charlotte Dentistry will be here,” he said, adding, “And, we’re hosting industrial employers, government agencies, colleges, and employment agencies.”

According to Rammell, onsite will be industrial employers Price Brothers, SC Johnson, and Sonitrol, as well as Cintas Rankin Components, Mannington Floors, and Rochling. “We’re also featuring locally-owned industries like FleetNet and Rankin Industries,” Rammell added. Employment agencies HTI Employment Solutions and Personnel Services Unlimited will offer a wide variety of opportunities. In the government sector, the church is expecting Gaston County and the Gastonia Police Department, as well as the TSA from Charlotte. Rounding out the field thus far will be Gardner-Webb University and Gaston College. As a further incentive for job seekers, the church will offer free meals at onsite food trucks for those who check in. Six young women have been crowned to represent the Gaston region in the 2022 Miss North Carolina and Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen competitions. The Miss Gastonia/Miss Gaston County/Miss Mount Holly competition was held on Jan. 8, at Stuart W. Cramer High School. At the end of the program, six young women emerged from a field of 15 contestants as winners. They are: ▪ Miss Gastonia 2022 is Sharidan Costner. She is the 19-year-old daughter of Sheldon and Sharon Costner of Gastonia. A graduate of Forestview High School, she is a student at Winston-Salem State University where she is pursuing a degree in exercise science. For the talent competition, she performed a tap dance routine. Her community service project focuses on offering support and bringing joy to children who are hospitalized. ▪ Miss Gastonia’s Outstanding Teen 2022 is Lorelei Elberson. She is the 15-year-old daughter of Scotty and Kristen Elberson of Denton. A student at South Davidson High School, her college plans include attending Columbia University to obtain a degree in pre-medicine; she wants to become an anesthesiologist. Would he have fumbled around in his shirt pocket for that one bullet Andy entrusted to his care, just for a case such as this (scared and confused teen girls in a car that could have passed for a circus clown car), pulled over and shaken down by the local constabulary for whatever reason; said reason surely not meriting this level of law enforcement intervention, unless (of course) they were nuke-toting terrorists!

I’m pretty sure the car we saw them in, which was barely able to contain them, could hold them and a small thermonuclear device. Just saying... I honestly don’t know how all that SNAFU ended as we had to leave and head back home to Cherryville. I can only hope it was resolved with little to no bloodshed. I can’t help but wonder though, had ole Barn been there and had that one bullet loaded in his revolver, which I’m sure had a name though it escapes me at the moment, if he would have either accidentally blown off his own foot; shot a hole into either the clown car or one of its tires, or (hor-

rors!) one of the young ladies. Cripes! What a scary thought. All those young law officers looked a little more together than ole Barn might have been in their situation, but still… one wonders after all. I kept watching the nightly talking heads news-type shows for this part of the state but saw nothing so, again, I can only hope and pray things were resolved to a better end than what we saw as we drove away. I’ve said all that to say this, I guess. Our law enforcement men and women of today are better trained than at anytime ever in this great land’s history, in spite of what has happened

recently and trumpeted by the left-leaning mainstream media. As a rule, they don’t cave in to knee jerk reactionism and, for the most part, do their jobs well and with everyone’s safety in mind. I mean, if we continue to bust all the good ones up, they might just say, “To heck with it!” and quit. Then I guess we will get what we deserve – a bunch of doofuses that put on a uniform, a badge and a gun, and cram that one bullet in their front pocket, nervously waiting to use it on the next clown car full of goofy, scared citizens. Ole Barn! Ya gotta love him!

You can at least say “howdy…” “Howdy” was a common everyday word where I grew up. Raised on old Stidham, now known as Milo Road, in rural Appalachia, I spent a lot of time at my Grandpa and Grandma Hinkle’s Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial store. People came and went, buying gasoline, sandwich meat, snacks, or groceries for the week. There were cane bottom chairs in the store. Often people would sit and chat for a while. Regardless of how many times during the week I walked down the road to that store, the opening salutation was typically, “howdy.” People were in and out of the Hinkle store doing business. A family member was often coming or going because my grandparents had raised 10 children and there were many grandchildren who frequented the Hinkle business. Often, family members were buying a soda pop or just stopping in to say “howdy.” We grew up on Milo Road speaking to most everyone who came and went. When a car drove by, we usually waved even though we didn’t always know them. At family or church gatherings we typically talked to everyone for a minute or two and shook hands or hugged a few people. The only time I can remember our family being speechless was when 15 or 20 of us were sitting on the porch and a man from New York City pulled up in an older car. My grandpa had received an advertisement in the mail about a great used car he could buy for $500. He ordered the car to surprise my grandma and we were all really surprised when this man pulled

in front of the store in an old beat-up looking car. He had driven the car from New York City, which was a long drive on those roads back then. After being drop-jaw stunned silent for a few minutes, everyone loosened up and eventually started talking to the man who was just doing a job but now had to get back to New York. By this time, some of us were chuckling just a little. A couple of the family members took the guy over to Kermit, West Virginia, to catch a Greyhound bus to begin his long journey back home. A part of American culture has been hand shaking and embracing those we know. A part of most American religious gatherings has been shaking hands. One church I attended insisted on everybody hugging each other. COVID-19 has impacted our world with death, sickness and business failures. The distancing for many of us continues to be tough. We wear our masks and seldom know who else is in the grocery store. We’re fearful of going to the funeral home to honor and respect the deceased. Shaking hands or embracing anyone anywhere is typically totally not welcome. Many holiday parties of large gatherings were fewer over the past holidays. People don’t want to be sick and so the distancing continues. We do have the telephone, social media and email which helps us at least stay connected. However, please keep in mind, when you do recognize someone at the grocery or any public place you may not feel comfortable embracing or shaking hands, but you can still convey a greeting and kindness by at least saying “howdy.”

And speaking of Boone, the winter snow has to be mentioned. I went to college there prepared for the snow, but amazingly enough I was not snowed in there in Boone. However, I was snowed in at home one time. One of my college professors thought that was hilarious. I do like snow so that means I am also a fan of winter. I know people have their favorite seasons, but like I said before, God created each one. And His creation is awesome!

(4th and Final part of “The Good Life” Series) Sometimes while driving to work in the mornings I listen to the radio station. One day while driving, I heard a story that really touched my heart. It was about a 12 year-old boy who found out about some children who had lost everything in a fire. Compassion DANYALE PATTERSON overtook him to the point that he gave every toy and piece of clothing he had, even the shoes he was wearing. His mother asked him why he had so many bags of things to give away. He replied, “Mom, I have everything and these kids have nothing.” Wow! What a big heart this young man had! I believe that he tapped into a biblical, spiritual principle from Acts 20:35 (AMP). Apostle Paul states, “In everything I showed you [by example] that by working hard in this way you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed [and brings greater joy] to give than to receive.” Everything Counts If we compare ourselves with other people, it can hinder us from giving what we have to offer because we think that we don’t have enough or that we are inadequate. However, all of us have something of value to give to others that can benefit them and bring them joy. For example, you may be good at cooking, while someone else can buy a meal for someone; both acts of kindness benefited the person. Maybe someone can put $200 dollars in a card, but you only have $20 dollars. As long as you are a cheerful giver, and you give from your heart what you have, you will find that your life will be filled with so much happiness. As you serve and lend a hand to others with your time, talent, and treasures - you become God’s hands extended in the earth. 2 Corinthians 8:12 (NLT) states, “Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, Your word says that If we, being evil, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will you, our Father who is in heaven, give what is good to those of us who ask! I thank and praise you for being the ultimate giver. Father, you are the greatest giver because you gave your one and only son, so that whoever believes in him won’t perish, but have everlasting life. Forgive me for being self-centered at times, thinking about what I want to receive instead of what I can give. Forgive me too for complaining about what I don’t have. Help me to remember that what I do have can bless others. May I find great joy in being a blessing to people and glorifying your holy name. The CHS Lady Ironmen lost 27-22 in the first round of the SPC 1A/2A playoffs last Tuesday, Feb. 15, to the BCHS Lady Yellow Jackets in a game played at Bessemer City’s gym. On that same night, back at Nixon Gym, the Ironmen varsity men were handed a 51-66 defeat at the hands of a better prepared East Gaston Warriors. The Ironmen had handed the scrappy Warriors two defeats earlier in January and it is to be suppose the East Gaston hoops squad was looking for a little payback, which came in the form of a loss to the CHS men in SPC 1A/2A first round tournament action at the CHS home court of Nixon Gym. The leading scorers for Coach Harrill’s Ironmen were junior Carson Kelly, with 11 points; and senior Jack Mulvey and sophomore Khanye Kennedy, each with 10 points apiece. They were the only Ironmen in double figures for the night. Cooper Sloan and Landon Hahn each had 6 points, followed by Chance Hunt, with 4 points. Rounding out the low scoring night for the Ironmen were Numarius Good and Darrien Floyd, each with 2 points apiece. According to information from the NCHSAA’s 2022 NCHSAA, the Men’s & Women’s Basketball Brackets have been finalized as of Saturday, Feb. 19, with first round games scheduled for the home of the higher seed on Tuesday,

Beating Bessemer City last year was our 380th win, to break the county record. This one was nice for all of us knowing that Cherryville is the only one in the county to have 400 wins. These men I work with are family. Coach Tate has been on the bench for all 400! Coach Black had to miss a couple years due to health and COVID; Coach Griggs has been around since he was a player from 2002-2006, and then became one of our assistant coaches. This is more WE than me. Coach Tate, Coach Griggs, and Coach Black are amazing. The players over the last 22 years? They are true winners!” Of his family, Harrill said, “My wife is my Number One fan. Teresa doesn’t miss many games at all over the last 22 years. Also my parents, Howard and Marie, can be found at almost every home and away game over the last 22 years. Huge Jeep gathering and road run honors MHPD Officer Tyler Herndon The Just Jeepin’ 4 A Cause group held a gathering Sunday afternoon to honor MHPD Officer Tyler Herndon and donate funds to a foundation in his name. Herndon lost his life in the line of duty on Dec. 11, 2020. Over 300 tricked out Jeeps arrived at the Municipal
