Homesley, Robinson inducted into NC American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame March 5 induction ceremony also includes Senior and Junior Legion players as well as two additional inductees by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
On Saturday, March 5, two Cherryville men were inducted into the 2021 class of the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. The two were Post 100 American Legion Commander Mike Robinson and former umpire Sam Homesley, also a member of Post 100. Two Cherryville inductions gives town 15 of its own in auspicious Hall of Fame. The 2022 ceremony was
held at the Cherryville Post 100 Legion hut and the inductees, in addition to Robinson and Homesley, were David Ellis, of Post 102 (Ahoskie), and Jerald D. “Danny” Rollins, of Post 39 (Greenville). Also recognized that night were North Carolina Players of the Year, Junior Legion Player of the Year Will Blackburn, and Senior Player of the Year, Zach Wilson. While Blackburn was present for the event, Wilson was playing and was unable to attend. His award was accepted by his Senior Legion coach, Bobby Reynolds. Carl “Lil Booze” Dellinger was recognized during the ceremony as well for his years of dedication and sponsorship to Cherryville Post 100 baseball. Numerous Legion dig-
nitaries were present at the event, not the least of which was past National Commander Bill Oxford and Jim Quinlan, Dept. of NC Commander, and Cherryville City Councilwoman and American Legion Auxiliary President for the Dept. of NC. Others representing various Legion areas and state positions were there as well. Homesley, it was noted at the event, was a Cherryville High and East Carolina graduate, a longtime school teacher, and coach at Burns High School. Additionally, he was a Vietnam veteran and a longtime high school and Legion baseball umpire who worked two Legion regional tournaments and 12 N.C. state tournaments. The new veterinary clinic, which has been at their location since Jan. 31 of this year, officially opened Feb. 11. The Clinic is owned and operated by
Dr. Bret M. Turner, DVM, and his wife, Marci, who is his Vet Tech. Former education professional and family friend, Millicent Heavner, rounds out the crew of three in the office. The clinic is in the space that formerly housed the medical practice of Dr. George Bradley, who is now retired. Dr. Turner is an NC State grad and had worked previously at the Cherryville Animal Hospital. Dr. Turner noted how the town of Cherryville has grown, adding he and his wife saw the town “had a demand” for their services to help in – and be a part of – that growth. See TURNER, Page 6

Items will benefit Crossnore’s Blair Fraley Sales Store
Carolina Journal
The N.C. Supreme Court has agreed to take up a lawsuit challenging North Carolina’s voter ID law. The high court’s decision removes the case from the state Court of Appeals and places it on a faster track for final resolution. Action from the Supreme Court this year could be significant. Democrats hold a 4-3 majority among the court’s justices, but two Democratic seats are up for election in 2022. Had the

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chairperson Louanna Kiser is asking those who can to help them out as they endeavor to help the Crossnore Communities for Children. Mrs. Kiser noted recently (via email) that, “Now is the time to have a spring clean out!” To that end, she said the Daughters of the American Revolution, Tryon Resolves
Chapter, Cherryville, will “…collect household items, jewelry, books, gently used clothing and miscellaneous items to benefit Crossnore Communities for Children Blair Fraley Sales Store.” As for how long the DAR, Tryon Resolves has been doing this, Mrs. Kiser said, “I found out they have done it for two years, then COVID hit. We didn’t do it in 2020 and 2021.” That said, now is the time for them to resume helping the group out as they can. She continued, “Blair Fraley was a young girl from Cherryville who died tragically in a bicycle accident. Items should be in good condition; no cracks or chips.
Clothing should be clean with no holes or tears.” Kiser said the Cherryville Fire Department will be the collection center of record to bring donations, adding, “We will start collecting the donated items from Monday, March 14, through Wednesday, March 23.” Kiser noted that, according to the Crossnore website, Crossnore Communities for Children is “…a non-profit 501 (c) 3 child welfare organization supporting children and families in crisis from North Carolina. They offer a continuum of services for children at risk of entering the child welfare system, See DAR, Page 2

Justice, representing the plaintiffs. “Additional review in the Court of Appeals will result only in further – and detrimental – delay.” Legislative defendants objected to the Supreme Court stepping into the case at this point. “Plaintiffs do not hide the reason they want to press fast-forward – a potential ‘reversal of the trial court’s judgment by the Court of Appeals,’” according to a brief from legislators’ attorneys. “This Court should reject Plaintiffs’ transparent attempt to invoke this Court’s extraordinary power to alter the normal appellate review process based on nothing more than ordinary forum shopping.” “Instead of prejudging what the Court of Appeals will do in assessing the voluminous record and nuanced legal issues presented by this case, this Court should allow the Court of Appeals to give its fulsome consideration of the issues in accordance with standard appellate procedure,” legislative defendants argued. This case, named

In a separate order issued Tuesday, Justice Tamara Barringer denied voter ID critics’ request that she step away from the case. Barringer had served as a state senator when the General Assembly approved the law in 2018. The request for Supreme Court action arrived Jan. 14 from critics challenging the voter ID law. They had secured a victory at the trial court level. A split 2-1 Superior Court panel had thrown out the law last September. While defendants proceeded to the Appeals Court, the Jan. 14 request asked Supreme Court justices to skip that intermediate court. “The facts and the law have been fully developed and carefully analyzed,” wrote attorney Jeffrey Loperfido of the Southern Coalition for Social

Holmes v. Moore, is one of three active lawsuits involving North Carolina and voter identification. The state Supreme Court already heard oral arguments Feb. 14, in a second case related to voter ID. That case, N.C. NAACP v. Moore, seeks to overturn a 2018 constitutional amendment guaranteeing voter ID. Carolina Journal has documented legal and political maneuvers related to that case at ExtremeInjustice. com. A third suit challenges North Carolina’s voter ID law in federal court. A trial
in that suit had been scheduled for January. It was pushed back when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider whether Republican legislative leaders will be able to intervene in the federal dispute. Oral arguments at the nation’s highest court are scheduled for March 21. There is no date yet for a hearing on Holmes v. Moore at the N.C. Supreme Court. There is also no word on when the court might rule in N.C. NAACP v. Moore.

Costner Elementary’s new principal embraces lessons in leadership by ALLISON DRENNAN Gaston County Schools “Synergy” is the word of the month at Costner Elementary School in Dallas. And when a second-grade student told principal Dr. Dan Barber “those characters really synergized together” after he read a story during class, he was impressed. “Go home and check with your parents to see if they know what synergy means,” he told the students. “Synergy” (when two things come together to create a better result than when acting independently) is one of the concepts that students are learning about in the school’s Leadership Academy. The school’s leadership concentration is based on The Leader in Me program, which was developed by Stephen Covey and centers around seven habits of highly effective people. Synergy is the sixth leadership habit. Others focus on being proactive, having a win-win perspective, putting first things first, and beginning with an end result in mind. “Having seen leadership at the high school level when
Dr. Dan Barber stands with a group of students at Costner Elementary. He became the school’s principal in January. (photos provided) I worked as an assistant principal at North Gaston, it’s amazing to see the seeds being planted in our younger students now,” he said. “It’s about getting them involved and making an impact from an early age.” Barber, who just started in his role as principal in January, admitted he never imagined becoming a principal when he first began his teaching career in Charlotte in 2004. He started working in Gaston
County Schools in 2015 and is a former Gaston County Assistant Principal of the Year winner. Barber succeeds Lonnia Beam, who retired in December after many years of dedicated service to Gaston County Schools. “I was so passionate about being in the classroom and helping students, but I knew I was limited,” he said. “Now, I feel like I’m in a role where I can support teachers in their careers and have an influence
on an even bigger group of students.” That passion for students is still evident as he walks through the halls, fist bumping students and donning a tropical Hawaiian shirt for reading a story to second graders. While Barber says he is still getting used to being a principal, Costner and the Dallas community have felt like a family from the very beginning. He’s grateful that
the faculty and staff believe in his vision for the future of the school. “Costner is incredibly unique in developing leadership qualities in children,” he said. “That’s a transferable skill that we’ll be feeding into W.C. Friday Middle School and North Gaston, too. Our students love to get involved in clubs and activities that they may not get to be a part of otherwise.” Barber says the take-away from the leadership and enrichment opportunities is noticeable in his students every day. With activities like flag patrol, lighthouse team, student advisory team, and green team, students are able to find things that interest them and allow them to grow as a leader in those areas. There are even fifth-grade students who serve as tour guides to show visitors and new students around the school. Costner also offers Spanish classes at the elementary level, one of the only schools in the county to offer a foreign language to the youngest of students. It’s just another way to build the foundation to cre-
ate well-rounded leaders, who will go on to do great things. “We want our students engaged in leadership in every way possible,” Barber said. “They’re making morning announcements and creating videos called the Costner Cougar News. I joke with them that they are trying to take my job.” Although he’s a new principal, Barber is looking forward to what is in store for Costner Elementary. “We’re putting the students at the forefront of the school,” he said. “We’re teaching them about leadership and ownership and responsibility, which makes us a better school and makes them better students.” Barber added, “I love that our students get to be so involved. Our teachers and staff work together to make sure that students have a chance to step up to be a leader. If we teach them how to be leaders when they are in elementary school, they will carry what they learn with them to middle school and high school and into life beyond graduation. We like to think we are producing the next generation of leaders for Gaston County.”
New principal Dr. Dan Barber reads to a group of students at Costner Elementary School in Dallas.

Will Blackburn, Junior Legion Player of the Year, with his plaque at the March 5 AL Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. His presenter was his Junior Legion head coach Stan Haynes.
Carl “Lil Booze” Dellinger was recognized during the ceremony for his dedication and sponsorship to Cherryville Post 100 baseball. Presenting him with the plaque honoring him is Post 100 American Legion baseball coach Bob Reynolds.
Noted former umpire Sam Homesley speaks at the Saturday, March 5 American Legion Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Homesley was presented his plaque by his fellow umpire and Area IV Legion baseball Commissioner Jerry Hudson.
BASEBALL From Page 1 IV Commissioner Jerry Hudson said as the two of them worked together, they had many humorous things happen to them, recounting many of them to the laughter of the audience. Post 100 Commander Mike Robinson, a Cherryville High graduate, was introduced by his brother, Tony, who is a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He noted his brother Mike, was a truck driver for 35 years, and a Vietnam veteran. Said and emotional Tony, “Mike has been Cherryville Post 100 commander the past eight years during which time he has worked every Post 100 baseball game. I am proud of him and that he is my brother, and I am proud to be able to introduce him here tonight.” Post 100 member and veteran Homesley, upon his acceptance of his plaque, said (after a couple of humorous anecdotes about him and his partner, Jerry, “I am honored to be inducted into this Hall of Fame! I had a great deal of fun and I loved what I did. I also appreciate the (American) Legion for recognizing me for all the hard work
that I – that we – put in to making this a great game!” When it came time for Post 100’s Mike Robinson acceptance speech, he kept it fairly simple. He reiterated what he said earlier in the Eagle, noting, “I really do appreciate the honor (being inducted). I must say it is all thanks to my veteran brothers and sisters here at Post 100. All of them that have helped me so much and any recognition I have gotten now and over the years is because of, and thanks to them.” Robinson noted earlier in an Eagle article that any honor and his subsequent induction “…is as much about them as it is me, especially for me to be in the position I am in at this time, as their Post Commander. Honestly, we are all like a family here at Post 100. I appreciate all of them!” If you are a veteran and would like to be involved with or be a part of Cherryville’s Post 100 American Legion, or their Unit 100 Ladies Auxiliary or the Sons of American Legion, or even want more information on this or other American Legion activities, contact them via the Cherryville American Legion at (704) 435-3794.
It’s March, which means it’s Women’s History Month. We’ve written about this topic before, so why revisit, right? First, we all know some wonderful women who have helped shape and/or influence our lives (or the lives of our loved ones). Second, library staff in the United States is around 82 percent female, meaning that over two-thirds of library employees are women or identify as women (data from Census Bureau’s American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample 1 –year estimate). Finally, we know some very amazing women in the literary world and showcasing their talents will hopefully inspire young girls of this generation. Like many other monthlong observances (Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month are some examples), women were first celebrated with a week-long observance, beginning March 7, 1982. For the next five years, Congress continually passed resolutions designating a week as “Women’s History Week”. The National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress in 1987 to change the observance from a mere week to the full month of March and Congress agreed. The next six years saw Congress pass additional resolutions asking the President to proclaim March as Women’s History Month, and since 1995 all U.S. presidents have proactively issued the annual proclamation, rather than waiting on Congress. One of the women we’ve written about before, Dolly Parton, is still working hard
to promote literacy. Her Imagination Library has been going strong for 27 years now, having first launched in 1995. Originally, the initiative only served children in Sevier County, Tennessee, where Dolly was born and lived as a child herself. By 2000, the program had been so successful that efforts to bring it to all children in the United States began in earnest. After hitting the 1-million-books mailed in 2003, the state of Tennessee agreed to help fund expansion of the program to all children living in that state. Things quickly took off from there, with all 50 states being covered, as well as Native American communities added. The Imagination Library went international with additions in Canada (2006), the United Kingdom (2007), Australia (2013), and Ireland (2019). In addition, the library sought to reach as many children as possible by starting to offer audio and Braille books in 2011. As of February 2022, the library had gifted 176,606,329 books to children – an amazing feat indeed! And at the heart of it all is one amazing woman,
Dolly Parton, founder of The Imagination Library. (photo provided) Dolly Parton. We celebrate her during Women’s History Month and her dedication to early literacy for all children! For more information about the Imagination Library, you can call us at (704)

And as a Protestant priest who hears confessions, I hear people say, “Oh, I just hate it that I said that!” Sometimes they confess that they can’t sleep or their conscious moments are filled with guilt and shame over some sinful act committed or for leaving something right undone. Are you living with regret? The Bible says for you to come to God and confess it. A wonderful old hymn says we should, “Hand it over, get on your knees and pray!” Dr. Robert Jeffress writes in his devotional, “The Benefits of Confession”, that “…admitting our failure allows us to receive God’s forgiveness.
(Isaiah 1:18). You can begin again. Refreshed. A wise person learns from their mistakes. They experience the freedom that God’s grace brings with it in His gift of forgiveness. As you live through this season to Easter keep in mind what my Granny said to me, “Confession is good for the soul.” You will, I believe, experience a newness about your life that will cause you to say, “I ain’t what I wanna be; I ain’t what I’m gonna be! But, thank God, I ain’t what I used to be!” (author unknown)

(Part 3 of the “DON’T MISS OUT” SERIES) “Eat your vegetables so you can be healthy and strong”, is a common saying spoken to children. However, no matter what age, all of us need to feed our spirit with spiritual food that will strengthen and increase our faith. God ex- DANYALE PATTERSON pects us to continue to grow in our walk with him and not stay babies or immature in our understanding and actions. Hebrews 5:12 & 14 (NLT) states, “You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.” Sometimes we miss out on opportunities to grow, because we become too busy to find out what the Lord has to say to us through his Holy Word - the Bible. There is a little song I like to teach children. It says: “If you read your bible and you pray everyday, You will grow, grow, grow. If you don’t read your bible and you don’t ever pray You will shrink, shrink, shrink!” The Apostles’ Example Although delving into the bible nourishes our spirit, God wants us to also digest it by applying it to our lives. Until we actually put to practice the biblical truths and principles, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we are not going to move forward in our walk with God. I think one of the reasons the disciples were able to become so spiritually mature quickly was because they were fully committed. Although they were carnal and Jesus had to continually correct them, they still were willing to learn his ways, lay aside their agendas and follow Christ wholeheartedly. They grew in leaps and bounds in their relationship with the Lord, and their faith greatly increased. Also, they were able to experience his love, power, and purpose for their lives, unlike many who turned from Jesus because they were offended by his message. When he asked his disciples if they would leave him too, Peter replied, “Master, to whom would we go? You have the words of real life, eternal life.” (John 6:68 MSG) In other words, Peter was saying, “We are not going to miss out, Lord. We know who you are and what you have for our lives.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “ Lord, I come to you with an open heart, a listening ear, and uplifted hands to you my God. Forgive me for not spending time with you and basking in your presence. I know I have missed out on words of guidance, encouragement, and wisdom by not making you a priority. Please help me to grow in the grace and knowledge of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory, honor, majesty, splendor, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. That’s the greatest benefit to confession. As long as we are denying our failure, rationalizing our failure, or being bitter toward somebody else for our failure, we are not in a position to receive God’s forgiveness.” Dr. Jeffress also states that “…admitting our failure results in renewed emotional and physical vitality.” Again, I am reminded of a verse in the song “‘Get on your knees and pray’ that says, “Are you tired and troubled? Then, get on your knees and pray!” Finally, let me add, confession will free us to hit “the reset button of our lives”. The Bible teaches us that we no longer have to be prisoners of our past. You and I are free to begin again. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow...”

TURNER From Page 1 “We want to provide timely, affordable, quality care and meds for dogs, cats, and small animals in Cherryville and the surrounding community,” said Dr. Turner, who added he is a “small animal vet” and is not a large animal vet. He continued, “Our focus is on preventative meds and treatment of non-critical and non-surgical illnesses.” Cherryville Chamber Chairman Pete Craft welcomed the Turners to Cherryville and noted the crowd of supporters and well-wishers and family was “… one of the largest crowds I’ve ever seen at a recent ribbon-cutting.” Mayor H.L. Beam, III, agreed adding that he too, along with the City Manager, City Council members and City staff members present, along with other City personnel, wanted to officially

Mr. Craft also told the Turners that if the Chamber could help them in any way they had but to ask. Dr. Turner and his wife were moved by the outpouring from the City and family and friends. He said, “I want to thank my wife and Millicent, and I especially want to thank the Lord, Who paved the way for this to happen, and lastly, I especially want to thank the City of Cherryville for everything!” The Clinic’s hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m., to 5 p.m., and on Friday, 8 a.m., until 12 noon. Ironmen lose at home against the E. Lincoln Mustangs and wet settled in and time seemed to drag. Coach Scott Heavner used four pitchers in this matchup, starting with his “go-to” guy, Eli Newsome, who struck out two batters but seemingly couldn’t find his rhythm in spite of throwing good pitches. He was followed by Landon Hahn (one strikeout), then lefty Collin Huss, who also had a “K”. Coach Heavner then brought young Brayden Reynolds to the mound and he struck out three 'Stang batters and walked two. Hitters for the Ironmen were Will Fowler (2-3, 2 RBIS) who hit a third inning, three-run homer; Huss (2-3, an RBI); Kanon Willis (1-3); and Tobias Miller was 1 for

Weather permitting, the Ironmen are scheduled to play two games at home: they will have played conference members Shelby on Tuesday, March 15 at Fraley, followed by a non-conference game with Community School of Davidson on Thursday, March 17 (also at Fraley), and ending the week with an away game at Shelby on Friday, March, 18. The CHS Ironmen lost 6-18 on Friday night, March 11, to the visiting East Lincoln Mustangs in a non-conference home game at Fraley Field. The game went five long innings as the Ironmen battled back against a very tough Mustangs team who made little, if any errors, while the Ironmen made too many. had indoor track meets since 1922, when the first meet was held at the old Star Brick Warehouse in Durham, and we’ve had cross country meets since 1929 when Winston-Salem High (R.J. Reynolds) dominated the sport, so we’re far behind on recognizing those who have accomplished so much and given so much to the sport. That’s our goal, to honor those who have helped make this sport so great in North Carolina, and these first three classes are a collection of some of the best athletes, coaches and contributors in the history of our sport.” Brett Honeycutt, N.C. High School Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame Founder. Here are some Friday’s stats and accolades/awards: Track & Field News National Track & Field Athlete of the Year (2014); National High School Coaches Association National Track & Field Athlete of the Year (2014); Gatorade National Track & Field Athlete of the Year (2014); High School Track Yearbook Track & Field Athlete of the Year (2014 – only two other N.C. boys have ever won the award); National High School 100-meter record holder and USA Junior (19-under)
