Recently, a letter was sent out by Sheri Stice, CMAA, chairperson of the National Interscholas-

In the letter, Ms. Stice noted, “To earn this distinction, Scott has demonstrated exemplary knowledge, contributions and on-going professional development in the field of interscholastic athletic administration.

The voluntary certification process included a thorough evaluation of the candidate’s educational background, experience, NIAAA Leadership Courses and professional contributions. It is culminated with a practical written or oral presentation project. “Scott is one of a very elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide to attain this level of professionalism.” See HARRILL, Page 4A

House fire does $50K in damages to Cherryville home by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

On Sunday, April 18, a house fire at 202 Spinners Dr., in Cherryville did $50,000 in damage to the residence. The call came in at 8:18 a.m., according to information received from Gaston County. An elderly man was injured, said AC Wofford, who elaborated, “The husband, his wife, two children and an elderly relative all got out. The elderly man was injured being carried out of the house and was transported to the hospital.” According to a Cher-

ryville Police Dept. incident report, the fire was reported at 8:23 a.m., and the house was listed as the residence of Glenna Lacey Jane Mantooth, 30, of that address. No injuries were reported on the CPD report. Assistant Chief Wofford said there were no injuries to any of the firefighters on-scene, adding that Cherryville FD arrived on the scene quickly and had the fire under control within four to five minutes. “We received automatic mutual aid from Waco VFD, Hugh’s Pond VFD, and Tryonota VFD,” he said. Assistant Chief Jason Wofford also noted the fire was ruled accidental adding the cause for the blaze was “…from an animal heater for animals behind the house.”

Said AC Wofford, “The fire caught on the siding in the rear of the house and had already started to breach the attic by the time the family awoke and discovered the fire. There is extensive interior damage and the attic as well. The house is a total loss.” As the fire was ruled accidental, there will be no investigation, he added. Wofford said the family did call American Red Cross, but were also planning to stay with relatives if possible. Assistant Chief Wofford said all firefighters on-scene “...did an outstanding job.” He continued, “This situation could have ended way more different than what it did. We are thankful this family escaped safely and See FIRE, Page 7A

Cherryville Family Y’s 5K Run/Walk to be held May 10 Organization also offering new members new deals for month of May by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

There is a lot going on right now at the Cherryville Family YMCA and being able to stay open longer is only a minor part of what all they have coming up, according to Administrative Coordi-

nator Butch Boyd. Boyd said that, in spite of there not being a Cherry Blossom Festival being held this year, their Cherry Blossom 5K Race and One Mile Walk will still be held, albeit on May 10, starting at 10 a.m. Additionally, Boyd said, “We are offering a “New January” membership promo, which is kicking off in May.” He continued, “The gist here is that usually January is our largest new member registration and since this

past January was not what we were hoping for thanks to COVID restrictions, we are going to offer the same thing in May. So, starting May 1, through 15, there will be no joining fee and the month of June will be free for anyone joining from May 1-15.” The joining fee, he noted is $50, and they will prorate the rest of the month of May. “The fee could be less, depending on the number of days left in the month at the See 5K, Page 4A

by TRACI POLLITT Cherryville Branch Manager Hard to believe, but the month of May is just around the corner! You might have noticed that there have been some in-person programs at our Main branch in Gastonia, and before we talk about anything else, we want to let our patrons know that yes, we ARE making plans to start up again here at Cherryville. We are looking at a combination of in-person, outdoor, and virtual programming to bring to our community this summer. We’ll be honest – the first step is to clean up our program space! We moved most of our seating, some tables, and several of the “soft” items (most from our children’s area) into that room during the last year to facilitate COVID-19 safety protocols. We’re going to slowly start putting things back, find a different way to store some things that need to stay put up for a bit longer, and then we’ll be ready. We are incredibly grateful to First United Methodist Church for their offer of an outdoor space! Beginning in June, we will once again have our weekly Family Storytime program;

the church has graciously offered us the use of their green space just past the parking lot as you head to the high school. We are moving the program up an hour, to 9:30 a.m., in the hopes that it won’t be quite so hot. We’ll keep it on the shorter side but still have our usual fun with songs, stories, and other activities. Registration will be required, as it will be for all programs. We’ll get those events posted on the Gaston County Public Library’s ‘Calendar of Events’, so stay tuned! We’re hoping that most of our patrons have signed up for Wowbrary but if not, we’ve got you covered! May has some great new releases heading our way, and we thought we’d give you the highlights. You might already have heard, but John Grisham, Danielle Steel, and Karen Kingsbury all have new books coming out this week! Grisham’s book, “Sooley” focuses on a 17-year-old South Sudanese athlete who receives a college scholarship to play basketball for North Carolina Central; Steel brings us a story of two estranged sisters who get the chance to connect again and right the wrongs of the past; and inspirational author

Kingsbury has penned a highstakes tale of love, danger, passion, and faith. James Patterson will put out his next installment in his Women’s Murder Club series (“21st Birthday”); Amanda Quick’s fifth book in her “Burning Cove” series (“The Lady Has a Past”); and Jeffery Deaver’s Colter Shaw comes back for a third book (“The Final Twist”). And for fans of the Netflix series, “Bridgerton”, a special treat! Avon is celebrating Julia Quinn’s series about the eight Bridgerton siblings by releasing new hardcover editions, beginning with the first three installments this month (the books were originally published as mass-market paperbacks from 2015 through 2017). And if you enjoy historical romance, we have plenty of authors to recommend – just stop by the branch (or call us) and we’ll be happy to help you find your next book! May also has us thinking of beach reads, and we’ve got some new titles by favorite authors that sound just about perfect! First up is Mary Kay Andrews, who releases a new title just about every year, and just in time for beach weather.

This year she’s got “The Newcomer” hitting shelves. It’s a great mix of romance, suspense, and family baggage. “Family Reunion” by Nancy Thayer weaves a multigenerational tale of a grandmother and granddaughter during a summer on Nantucket. Mary Alice Monroe continues her “Beach House” series with “The Summer of Lost and Found”; fans are not only drawn in to the family drama in her books but also her depiction of life in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. And what better book to read pool or beachside than the latest by Nora Roberts? Her newest novel, “Legacy”, comes complete with all her trademark ingredients: an introduction several years in the past, familial relationships, romance, and suspense. For more information on programs, new titles, and all things library-related, call us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Our public service hours are 10 a.m., to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. As always, stay safe and stay healthy!

How Seniors Can Learn New Technology Skills Online Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good technology classes or online learning resources for inexperienced seniors? I have a computer and a smartphone, but my knowledge and skills are pretty limited. Tech Challenged Senior Dear Senior, There are many different technology teaching tools available to older adults that can help you learn new tech skills so you can better utilize your devices. Here are some good options to consider. Local classes or workshops: Depending on where you live, there may be community resources that offer beginning computer and personal technology classes, be it online or in-person, for older adults that are new to technology. To find out what’s available in your area, contact your local public library, senior center, college or university, or local stores that sell computers. Your Area Agency on Aging may also be able to help you. Visit the Eldercare Locator at Eldercare.acl.gov or call 800-677-1116 to get your local number.

GetSetUp.io: This is one of the best online learning websites that partners with guides to provide training on tech tools for adults 50 and older. They provide more than 350 online classes taught in real-time by retired educators and tech industry experts in a way that lets older adults learn-by-doing, versus just watching a video. Their technology classes – all taught via Zoom – cover things like learning how to use smartphones and tablets, how to set-up and use Zoom, how to utilize Gmail features, how to recognize online scams, how to sell your stuff online and so much more. Most of their classes are free, however some charge a small fee. SeniorPlanet.org: Created and sponsored by national nonprofit OATS (Older Adults Technology Services) and recently joining forces with AARP, Senior Planet offers 60-and-older adults a wide variety of free online courses, programs, and activities that are taught in real-time to help seniors learn new technology skills, as well as save money, get in shape and make new friends. Some of their more popular tech class-

es include “All Things Zoom,” “Everything Smartphones,” and an “Introduction to Social Media.” They even offer a “lunch & learn – tech discussion group” offered at various times throughout the year where you can ask questions as well as share your struggles and experiences. And, if you ever have a technology question that pops up during the week, you can call their National Senior Planet Hotline for tech help at 920666-1959 anytime Monday through Friday during working hours. OasisEverywhere.org: This nonprofit educational organization for older adults provides more than 10 low-cost/ free online computer, internet and mobile technology courses for beginners. And when the pandemic dies down, they will resume offering beginner tech classes in their 27 locations (located in nine states) throughout the country. CandooTech.com: This company provides fee-based online tech support and training to help older adults feel more comfortable with phones, computers, tablets, home safety devices and more.

Their specially trained tech concierges will teach you how to use your technology, fix what’s not working and install software, as well as learn how set-up and use email, video chat, social media, online shopping and entertainment, ride sharing services and more. They offer one-hour, one-on-one or small group sessions for $50, or you can become a member and get two 90-minute training sessions plus unlimited quick support (30 minutes or less) for $180 per year. They also provide device installation and set-up done remotely for $180. TechBoomers.com: This is a free educational website that provides video and article tutorials that teach older adults and other inexperienced technology users how to use the most popular and trusted websites, apps and devices. Being an AD does not mean you get to stop learning. You have to find new ways to better serve the students and staff at your school. “Some of the classes deal with legal issues, handling of tough situations, sportsmanship, dealing with the general public, enforcing rules and regulations, and such. As far as my career, I enjoy what I do as the CHS Athletic Director, and I enjoy representing Cherryville in our community, county, and throughout the state. I have also enjoyed serving on the National Board of the Basketball Coaches Association.” When asked if, to his

knowledge, if this was not only a “first” for him, but for CHS as well, Harrill responded with, “Yes, I am the only one at CHS to have obtained the CMAA. Also, I am the only Athletic Director now serving in Gaston County to have earned the CMAA.” He continued, “I take great pride in doing my job at CHS. I try to be fair and consistent in what I do. Being an Athletic Director takes a lot of hours of work, but the benefits of seeing our student athletes succeed makes it all worth it.” Cherryville High Scholl Principal Kevin Doran said, “Coach Harrill is dedicated to our Athletic Department and works hard to be the best he can be for the athletes of Cherryville.”

that time he was in an unconscious state. But he recovered and was transferred to a stepdown unit for a week or so and then to a room and was later discharged to go home. Once at home, he wanted to talk with a preacher. I went to Bud’s house that very afternoon. He was in the guest bedroom. He greeted me with a, “Come in, preacher and have a seat. I need to talk with you!” “Well, Bud,” I said, “What’s on your mind?” “They tell me I was out of it for over a week in the hospital. But I wasn’t really there. I was at a huge trash dump. Started out on top of it. Whew, it stunk! Old papers and plastic bags, rotten table scraps; like you would see at a trash pile. So, I started walking down it. That’s when I noticed rusted car fenders, burning tires, old batteries, and stuff like that. I kept on walking and added to all of that, was bloody animal

hides, cow heads, chickens’ feathers and feet, dried out fish, and hog innards. Then I came upon a rusty barbed wire fence. I crossed it. A thick fog was all around and I couldn’t see anything for more than just a few feet. I felt lost. I had no sense of direction. I was walking in circles. All of sudden, I saw a man coming toward me, so I shouted out, ‘Who are you? Where am I?” and he walked right on past me, looking straight ahead like he didn’t see or hear me. After a while another person came walking out of the fog. This time it was a woman and I ran over to her and called out but she walked right on by me like I wasn’t there. This happened over and over and over. No one would stop! No one spoke; they all walked right past me like I wasn’t there. I wanted to know where I was.” “Did you ever find out where you were, Bud?” I

asked. “They all said I was unconscious in the hospital, but preacher, I was in hell!” As I had listened to Bud’s story it dawned on me that he was giving an apt description of the Valley of Hinnom or Gehenna, the words that Jesus used in describing hell. The Valley of Hinnom, near the outskirts of Jerusalem, had become a trash dump and a place of abomination where fires burned continuously. Gehenna became synonymous with “a place of burning”. “My question is, for you, preacher, is why did He let me come back?” “There is a way to avoid that place,” I said. “God’s grace is open to all and is the way to avoid hell and His blessings of eternal life are through Jesus Christ. Do you believe that and do you claim Him as your Lord and Savior?” Bud answered in the af-

firmative and then asked me what would God want him to do. “Tell your story to all who will listen. That’s what you have to do and leave the rest to the Lord. He will make sure your purpose is complete,” I said. We all experience the call to God’s grace in a lot of different ways. For Bud, he got to experience hell first hand. He realized God had given him another chance. Folks, hell is a real place. Read what it was like again through the eyes of an illiterate, distrusting man. My prayer for you, if you don’t know Jesus already as your Savior and Lord, is that Bud’s story will be a means of God’s grace for you. And for those that do love the Lord already, that your faith would be made ever stronger and your walk with Him ever closer. God bless you all.

Drive-thru luminary event planned May 22 at Dover YMCA by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info Want to have some fun all for a great cause? Then an upcoming Drive-thru Luminary event at the Shelby Dover YMCA may be just for you. For those who live in the immediate area of Cherryville, Gaston County and Cleveland County, the Cleveland County YMCA and the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Relay for Life, will, on Saturday, May 22, from 6 to 9 p.m., collaborate to host a drive-thru luminary event at the Dover YMCA, located at 411 Cherryville Rd., Shelby. This event is for anyone – no matter where you are from or where you live in the area – who is battling cancer right now, or has battled cancer in the past, or who is or has been a caregiver of those who battle or have battled this disease, noted Amanda Whitesides, Senior Manager of Community Development for the ACS/ Southeast Region. Whitesides said this event is “… in lieu of the Relay for Life event that is typically held at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, but will not be held this year due to COVID-19. We will have the Drive-thru Luminaria service option and some onsite activities and entertainment options following social distancing and safety guidelines. It is our top priority to keep everyone safe.” So, here’s how it works: individuals or groups may purchase a luminary in remembrance of a loved one who passed away from cancer or in remembrance of someone who survived the disease. They will also have several vendors, outdoor exercise classes, and an Open House for the YMCA LiveStrong Program, if it is

safe to do so, according to Whitesides and fellow event planners, Johnny Stamey, Director of Healthy Living, and Mark Pritchett, Executive Director, both of the Dover Foundation YMCA, and Piper Barnes, Director of Annual Giving and Marketing/Cleveland County Family YMCA. Pritchett and Stamey noted that all activities are COVID contingent and all precautions will be taken and social distancing regulations and rules observed. For Relay for Life Cleveland County, Whitesides noted Kathy Sloan and Robin Earwood are the Relay for Life Cleveland County Volunteer Chairpersons collaborating with them. Said Whitesides, “Thanks to the continued support from our community here in Cleveland County and the dedication of volunteers, the American Cancer Society is able to help so many – those who are battling cancer today, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether by funding groundbreaking cancer research, supporting education and prevention efforts, and providing free information and critical services for people with cancer who need them. We can’t do it without you and are thankful for your support of American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and all our lifesaving programs and services.” To register for the event, make a tax deductible donation, or dedicate luminarias in honor or memory of those touched by cancer, go to http:// Relayforlife.org/clevelandcountync, or relayforlife.org and enter your zip code. She continued, “At Hospice Cleveland County, trained volunteers give selflessly to help people live as fully as possible, even when facing a serious or life-limiting illness. Even now, when our volunteers can’t visit patients and their families in the home as they used to before the pandemic, they are making a difference by contacting patients and families by phone or by sending cards to offer both social and emotional support.” Also, Haynes added, “Given that hospice volunteers accompany people along the journey of a serious or life-threatening illness, they serve an essential part in enabling Hospice Cleveland County to offer the best care possible. By sharing their time, energy, and expertise, our vol-

But even if the integration of volunteers was not required, we would still consider them critical members of our team. Our community is a better, more compassionate place because of their service.” Hospice Cleveland County serves individuals not just in Cleveland County, added Ms. Haynes, but in Gaston, and Rutherford counties as well, and in homes, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, and Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain. CHS From Page 1A listed dress code for graduation applies to all seniors, adding that the proper cap and gown, with no personalization or decoration, must be worn at that time. It is stressed that any fines not paid by graduation could result in the senior’s name not being called and their not receiving their diploma until such time as those fines are paid. The following dress code applies to all senior events in which the cap and gown are worn: white dress shirt, black dress pants and black dress shoes (no sandals or tennis shoes); and dresses should not show below the hem of the gown, and again, black shoes (no sandals or tennis shoes). According to the letter, there will be a senior class group photo taken at Rudisill Stadium on Tuesday, April

27, at 11:30 a.m. Seniors will receive their graduation yard sign. Mr. Doran noted the seniors will be bused from CHS to the stadium. The Senior Award Ceremony will be held Monday night, May 3, at 6 p.m., at Rudisill Stadium and it is to be a cap and gown event. Though a time is still to be determined (as per the letter), the Sports Award Ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 5, again, at Rudisill Stadium. The student-athletes’ coaches will reach out to them with the start time for each team. On Sunday, May 16. the 2021 Baccalaureate Service will be held at Cherryville First Baptist Church at 6 p.m. This event is, as it has always been, sponsored by the Cherryville Ministerial Association. Still yet to be determined is a Visual Fine Arts Showcase. All fines must be paid by Tuesday, May 25, by 3:30 p.m., and on Friday, May 28, starting at 9:30 a.m., seniors

The Cherryville Eagle will have graduation practice. The seniors are to report to Nixon Gym for this mandatory practice. Any senior who does not attend will not get to take part in the graduation ceremony. At this practice, the senior will receive his or her graduation tickets. All families are guaranteed to receive four (4) tickets to their assigned ceremony. On Friday night, May 28, the CHS Class of 2020-2021 will have their graduation ceremony at Rudisill Stadium; one at 5:30 p.m.; the other at 8 p.m. This is a cap and gown event and students are asked to arrive at Rudisill Stadium no later than 5 p.m. The current format as listed in the letter is there will be two ceremonies; one at 5:30 p.m. for last names A-K, and a second ceremony for L-Z at 8 p.m. Seniors are required to stay for both ceremonies. In case of inclement weather, Saturday, May 29,

is designated as a Graduation Rain Date at Rudisill Stadium, with times of graduation at 8 a.m., and 10 a.m., with students reporting to the staging area by 7:30 a.m. Lastly, it is noted that Yearbook Day is slated for Summer 2021, but the time and place are still to be determined. The Senior class Advisors ask all students to remember that it is important to keep up with school communications and emails as well as the Class of 2021 Facebook page in order to stay current with any changes to the events, including times, venues, and formats. Lastly, Mr. Doran and the CHS staff and faculty and the Senior class Advisors want all to know they look forward “… to celebrating the Class of 2021 with you!”

CHS Lady Ironmen softball team currently 6-6 overall Teams is currently 4-2 in SPC 1A play by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Lady Ironmen softball interim Head Coach Callie Hahn likes the direction the team is heading in these days. Hahn noted that on Monday, April 19, in a SPC 1A makeup game her ladies defeated the Lady Patriots of Piedmont Charter 11-1 in five innings. Coach Hahn said that although her team didn’t hit it as well as she would have liked, they were still able to come out with the victory. In that game, junior Raegan Nowowiecki went the distance on the mound and got the win. In the process she struck out six batters and giving up one run. For CHS, Aleigha Whisnant was 3-4, with a double and 3 RBIs; Rileigh Kiser was 1-3, with a triple and 2 RBIs; and Kaitlyn Newsome, Faith Anthony, and Riley Bryant had a hit and an RBI

each. Said Hahn, “Our defense has really improved and played errorless ball in this one.” On Tuesday, April 20, the ladies hosted Highland Tech’s Lady Rams in another conference matchup, and CHS scored early and often in this one, taking the win 203. Coach Hahn was pleased her team came out aggressive at the plate and ended the game with 17 base hits. Nowowiecki again got the win in the short start, going three innings and getting six K’s. She gave up no runs on the evening. Hahn said her leading hitters for were Elizabeth Levine (3-3, 2 RBIs), Marigrace Moyer (2-4, 2 RBIs), Faith Anthony (2 doubles and 3 RBIs), and Laila Davis (3-4, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs). Additionally, Riley Bryant and Kaitlyn Newsome had two hits each, and Whisnant and Kiser had two RBIs. Coach Hahn said, “All of our team members played well and contributed in the win.”

Southern Piedmont 1A conference leader Lincoln Charter came to Cherryville, Thursday, April 22, to play in a game for first place in the conference and came away victorious with a 9-3 victory over the Lady Ironmen. Coach Hahn said the Lady Eagles took advantage of some crucial CHS errors and walks to win it. “I thought we had opportunities to shut off some innings and not give up multiple runs, but we just couldn’t get it done,” said Coach Hahn. Kaitlyn Newsome was 2-4; Aleigha Whisnant had 2 RBIs, and Amber Roach was 2-4 to pace the Lady Ironmen in this home loss. The ladies travel to play Piedmont Charter on Tuesday. April 27, and will welcome rival BCHS on Thursday, April 29, for Senior Night. Currently, the 6-6- lady Ironmen are still in second place in the SPC 1A, where they are 4-2 in conference play. (Stats and info by Brian Kiser and Susan L. Powell)

The Lincoln Charter batter takes a big swing for the strike as the clay dust puffs off the mitt of Lady Ironmen catcher, senior Faith Anthony.

In last week’s home game against the Lady Rams of Highland Tech, CHS senior softball player, Marigrace Moyer, edges off first base as she watches for her teammate’s turn at bat.

With a Lady Eagles runner on first, Lady Ironmen first baseman Aleigha Whisnant watches as teammate and pitcher Raegan Nowowiecki starts her windup. Left-handed Lady Ironmen batter Riley Kiser swings at the Lady Eagles pitcher’s delivery, barely missing the ball.
