Council has joint Volunteers make Cherryville’s work, budget Main Street blossom on May 1 planning session by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

At the Saturday, May 1 combination work and budget session, Council heard two presentations, one by Sharon Padgett, Gaston County YMCA CEO and the other by Cherryville Realtor, Vicki Spurling, of Vicki Spurling Realty. City Manager Jeff Cash said Ms. Padgett told the City Council about how the YMCA will soon be moving to a location at North Mountain and West Second Street location. “It is the old Cherry Motors, Chrysler – Plymouth building, (now) recently a tanning business. This new building for them will afford many more opportunities to serve the citizens of Cherryville and beyond. City Council supports the YMCA decision,” said Mr. Cash, who also added that Mrs. Spurling discussed the brick wall on North Mountain St., at the old Rainwater Furniture Building. Said Mr. Cash, “She is

This is the area where the fence was recently taken down, across the street from Cherryville Area Ministries. The City Council gave her permission to move forward with design work with the City Council having final approval of the mural to be installed.” Council also heard from the Planning and Zoning Board director, Derrick Mackey, about a proposed rezoning of four parcels at or near 1444 W. Academy St., in Cherryville, for possible apartment units. The request to change from the zoning from MC and R-9 to RMF zoning was submitted by Mr. Denis Blackburne, Senior Vice President of Development for Woda Companies, of Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Mackey noted the Cherryville P&Z Board voted 6-1 to ask Council to consider setting a public hearing at the May 10 regular session meeting to rezone the parcels. Also discussed was the City’s golf cart ordinance See BUDGET, Page 2

Good news about a missing Cherryville teen, Taylor Falls. She has been found by those searching for her and is back with her family. On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Larry Seagle said their office was notified that morning around 5:45 a.m., that a 13-year-old female, Taylor Falls, of Cherryville, had been reported as missing, having been last seen around 11 p.m., the previous night (April 27). Seagle noted in his most recent media release that the youngster was located “… roughly a quarter of a mile in a heavily wooded area near the residence. She was

Cherryville’s Downtown Director David Day, said recently in a media release, with the planting of 2,000 colorful petunias, the City’s Main Street area “… is looking brighter.” And it absolutely is as on May Day, Saturday, May 1, more than 20 local volunteers began planting the first of 2,000 pink or white petunias which will beautify Main Street and nearby areas this spring and summer. Rounding out the effort, the Heritage Park will also bloom with spring and summer color, noted Mr. Day. He continued, “These flowers are going to be

Fire does $100K-plus in damage to Cherryville home by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Wofford said a fire on May 3, did about $110,000 in damage to the home. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries, though it was noted by AC Wofford that unfortunately there were several cats and one dog that did not escape. “One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhala-tion, but is okay,” he said. Wofford noted Cherryville had five units there

to battle the 7:05 a.m. fire, and that Waco VFD, Hugh’s Pond and Tryonota also provided mutual aid. Said AC Wofford, “We had 15 firefighters on scene, and it took four minutes and 10 seconds to arrive on scene from dispatch and 10 minutes to contain the fire.” Other emergency and ancillary personnel on-scene in-cluded GEMS, Cherryville PD, and Cherryville Public Works, along with all the departments mentioned above by AC Wofford. AC Wofford added that though he knows who the home belongs to, he said

he preferred not to mention names, because the community already knows who the home be-longs to as the individual is well known in the Cher-ryville community and folks will know already how to reach out to him and his family. Wofford added, “There have been many donations al-ready made to the family, but I don’t know of any certain contact to do so.” Wofford said the house is a total loss due to the heavy fire and smoke damage estimating that damage to be “around $110,000.” Fire Chief Jeff Cash

commended all who answered the call, saying, “All the responding firefighters did an out-standing job. This fire progressed rapidly to the attic and the family will be able to salvage many personal belong-ings. We also appreciate the response from our mutual aid departments surrounding Cherryville.” Chief Cash noted for those who may wish to find out how to possibly donate to the family they may call CFD at (704) 435-1730 and speak with Ms. Brittany Bingham.

A Special Message from Alan Cloninger, Sheriff of Gaston County

I AM SEEKING RE-ELECTION IN 2022 It’s been my honor to serve the citizens of Gaston County for the last 17 years as your Sheriff. Throughout my tenure, I have worked diligently to serve and protect all of our citizens and the county. Working with the brave deputies, detention officers and our administrative staff we have always put the interest of public safety and service first. That’s why I will seek re-election as your Sheriff in the upcoming 2022 General Election. I know there are some candidates already on the campaign trail telling many of you that I won’t be a candidate next year. That’s not true, and I wanted you to hear it directly from me. I will be a candidate for re-election in 2022. I want to continue serving Gaston County with innovative programs in our law enforcement support, our courts, our civil service, our jail, our sex offenders registration program, our domestic violence programs and the community support programs. In these turbulent times, I will continue to be a dependable, steady leader. I will not apologize for being an advocate for law enforcement and standing up to execute my constitutional duties as your elected Sheriff. I will continue to have an open-door policy for any citizen of Gaston County, and I will execute my lawful duties without prejudice or prescriptions. That’s my solemn pledge to the people of Gaston County.

The “Tails and Tales” design used on this poster for the Gaston County Library’s Summer Reading program. (graphic provided)

A “bit o’ this; a bit o’ that” about the CBL’s Summer Reading Program by TRACI POLLITT Cherryville Branch Manager

We mentioned Summer Reading last week, and while we here at the library know all about it, we realized there are people in our community who have never heard of it, nor have they ever participated. Perhaps a bit of a history lesson and explanation is in order! Way back in 1987, 10 Minnesota regional library sys-tems got together and created a summer library program for children, choosing a theme, artwork, and incentives to keep children reading throughout the summer. The endeavor was so successful that eventually this group cre-ated the nonprofit organization Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). Originally, the focus was on school-aged children in grades 1-5, but over the years CSLP has expanded their offerings to include teens (be-ginning in 2005), adults (2010), and even those just start-ing out in life (early literacy, also known as birth to 3 years old, in 2014). Here at Gaston County Public Li-brary, each Summer Reading program has something for pa-

trons of all ages, as we’ve expanded our offerings right along with CSLP. “But kids just want to have fun during their summer break! Isn’t this too much like work?” some may ask. We hear this from parents and caregivers often, and we do understand. We want kids to have fun, too! During our Summer Reading initiative each year, we encourage kids to read, which in turn helps to prevent the “summer slide”. But we also encourage kids to ENJOY reading by promoting great books, bringing in entertaining pro-grams, and the best part yet, getting kids to tell us about what they’re reading. Having a child tell you all about a favorite book is a great way to foster positive attitudes about reading! Teens know the library is a welcoming place to come for reading materials as well as programs, too. Most of our adults already come in to browse the shelves and tell us all about their latest reads, which is great! Summer Reading, though, gives them a chance to not only set the example for their children but to be re-warded for it,

too. And finally, we realized that leaving out our little ones was closing the door on opportunities to encourage a life-long love of reading. We firmly believe it’s never too early – or too late – to fall in love with books! We’re loading the calendar with programs, and again, they will all require registration. To ensure fairness for all, registration will open one week before the event. Be sure to keep a list of the events you want to attend, and at that oneweek mark, head to the GCPL Calendar of Events for registration links. If you do not have Internet access, we will also accept registration requests by phone, but again, we will not open those until that one-week mark. For more information about all things library-related, you can reach us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Our public service hours are 10 a.m., to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. And – as always – stay safe and stay healthy!

Zacchaeus to the people.

I fear that the words of Zacchaeus can easily be mistranslated resulting in a mis-understanding of this meaningful text. In the Greek text the words ‘give’ and ‘restore’ should be translated as already being completed. So, the text should read, “Look, Lord, I have given half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I have restored fourfold.” This puts a whole new spin on things. Zacchaeus was not the enemy of the people as he was labeled. His job made him a tar-get for the people,

but he refused to be what the people saw him as. The people were the ones at fault. They had turned on one of their own. It took the Son of God to open their eyes to the prejudice they had against this seemingly honest official. Today we have a group of government officers who have been vilified by the public. They have been labeled by the mistakes a few have made rather than by the good most have done for the community. Yet their good deeds far outpace their bad ones. These modern day Zacchaeus-es deescalated over 2,000,000 conflicts

last year. They freed over 100,000 oppressed people from their abusers. They gave out over 10 million meals to those in need, while they themselves were paid very little. Sadly, over 200 of them laid down their lives for their community. I am talking of course about those who serve in law en-forcement. This week is National Law Enforcement Week. It is a time to say ‘thank you’ to those who serve and protect. Considering the current political climate, it may be seen as a time of reconciliation. Christ has called us to be one-fold under His

watch. Christ opened the eyes of the people to restore Zacchaeus to them. May Christ open our eyes to restore those who serve and protect to our community today. Instead of joining the crowd that sows hate and division, be the one who sows the seeds of unity and peace. I ask that this week you would be in prayer for those in law enforce-ment and their families. Let us be a people whose eyes are open to the truth and whose arms are open to all in our community.

BLOSSOM From Page 1A is focusing this year on what he termed, “groundlevel planting,” next year, said Day, “After the new streetscape is in, we’ll also add hanging baskets and planters,” adding that the flowers now planted “…will bloom until the construction on the planned new streetscape begins A close-up of one of the white variety of in the early fall.” what some are calling “super petunias”, A c c o r d i n g planted on the corner of the Chamber to Steve Panton, building, across from the City’s minipart-time market- park. ing director for the city, “These particular petunias were chosen because they are so hardy and need very little pruning. Also, cities across the country with climates similar to ours often plant this variety.” Day noted one of the keys to making this year’s planting so successful was the effort from so many Cherryville citizens and merchants. “Our volunteers were great,” he said. David cited the role played by Upchurch’s Nursey, which grew the flowers from seeds, by noting, “These flowers are all literally homegrown. They cost us significantly less than if we had imported them from a supplier.” Chairperson of the Main Street program Donna Beringer was one of the many volunteers planting the flowers. She was equally enthusiastic about the planting of the flowers. “This a great day for our community,” said Beringer, who also added, “We’re focused on making downtown Cherryville a destination. Having gorgeous flowers is just part of the magic we hope to create.”

Ironmen baseball squad now 4-0 overall as season progresses by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The CHS Ironmen baseball team are currently 4-0 over-all, and 3-0 in SPC 1A play as the 2021 season progress-es. On Wednesday, May 5, the men traveled to Sims Legion Park in Gastonia, which is the home field for the High-land Tech Rams. The Rams struck first, making it 2-0, until the fourth inning when the Ironmen got on the board with a run. In the fifth inning, as they held the Rams to only one more run while the CHS men scored three runs. They tacked on two more runs in the sixth and held on to a 6-3 lead as a determined Rams club attempted to get runners on base, tie the game and move ahead. Ironmen coach Scott Heavner used three pitchers in this matchup: starter Kanon Willis, Logan Hendrick (4th inning), and Trip Creason, in the 5th inning. Hitters in this one for the Ironmen were Landon Hahn (1-5); Christian

Hahn (1-4, an RBI… his brother, Landon came in); Ty Heavner (2-4, 3 RBIs); Quinlan Sanford (2-4, a double, an RBI); and Collin Robinson (1-4, a bunt). Dalton Pence was walked three times; Tobias Miller was walked once; and catcher Ben Huffstetler, III was walked three times. Pitcher Willis had two strikeouts and walked two Rams batters; Hendricks had one strike out and walked two Rams; and Creason struck out six batters and walked none. The Ironmen had six runs on seven hits. Against TJCA Gryphons The CHS men traveled again on Friday, March 7 to take on the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Gryphons in Forest City. The Cherryville club won the SPC 1A matchup 5-2. The winning pitcher was senior 'lefty’ Dalton Pence, who won his second game as pitcher. Pence, a UNCChapel Hill signee, struck out 16 Gryphons batters, and gave up two earned runs

on four hits. He has a total of 30 strikeouts so far this season. As with the Rams game previously, the Ironmen had to come from behind as we were down 2-0, until top of the fourth inning. The Ironmen took the lead from the gutsy Gryphons 4-2 in the sixth inning and scored their last run in the seventh inning for the win. Hitters for the CHS men in this one were Collin Robin-son (2-4, an RBI); Will Fowler (1-3, an RBI); Chase Mil-ler (1-2); Quinlan Sanford (1-4); and Will Heavner, who although 0-5 at bats got an RBI. One Ironmen run was scored on an error by the TJCA squad. The Ironmen played Piedmont CC on Tuesday, May 11 at home, then will travel to play Lincoln Charter on Friday, May 14, in what promises to be a clash of SPC 1A base-ball powerhouses. (Stats and additional information by Susan L. Powell and Danny Eaker)

Ironman lead-off batter Landon Hahn waits for the pitch from Rams pitcher Liam Fulbright (off camera) at last week’s game at Sims Park in Gastonia (photos by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media)

CHS Ironmen pitcher Kanon Willis puts some “ooomph” into his throw in the game against the Highland Tech Rams.

Ironman Will Fowler literally watches the ball as it sails in too high and is called a “ball” by the umpire. Rams catcher Gavin Blackwood raises up to get a handle on it so it doesn’t get away from him. That was a close call! Batter Ty Heavner just gets his head out of the way of the Rams pitch, thrown a tad bit too high.

CHS batter Will Fowler, once again paying great attention to the throw, sees the ball and swings at just the right time. Ironman batter, senior Dalton Pence, takes a mighty swing to send the baseball deep into the outfield.

The Cherryville Eagle

The five 2021 CHS Lady Ironmen senior softball players and their family members and coaches gather one last time on the CHS Softball Field, their home for many seasons. They are: Interim Head Coach Callie Hahn; Margaret and Terry Taylor and Amber Roach; Stephanie and Chuck Moyer and Marigrace Moyer; Matthew and Meleah Anthony and Faith Anthony, and Faith’s service dog, Paisley; Tony and Kristen Levine and Elizabeth Levine; and Hope and Kirk Thornburg and Harlee Austin. Lady Ironmen softball CHS track team has finishes 2021 season 7-7 good showing last week overall; 5-2 in SPC 1A by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info Interim Lady Ironmen softball coach Callie Hahn said they secured a wildcard berth in the 32-team state playoff field over last weekend after finishing in second place in the Southern Piedmont 1A conference. Said Hahn, “Our ladies were matched up with a really good South Stanly Lady Bulls team on the road in Norwood (NC).” The season, unfortunately, came to a halt as Hahn noted the Lady Bulls, “…scored early and won going away, 13-0,” to end the Lady Ironmen’s season. Coach Hahn continued, “South Stanley scored their runs on 10 hits, 11 walks, and two errors in the win. A first inning ‘grand slam’ off starter Raegan Nowowiecki proved to be enough as our ladies couldn’t muster any offense in the loss.” Hahn noted freshman Laila Davis came on in relief of Nowoweicki in the third inning and held them in check until the game was salted away when the Lady Bulls put five more runs on the board. Hahn said Aleigha Whisnant got the only Cherryville hit as the South Stanley pitcher dominated. The game ended the high school careers of five seniors – Faith Anthony, Harlee Austin, Elizabeth Levine, Marigrace Moyer, and Amber Roach, who Coach Hahn said have “… been a big part of the Lady Ironmen program and will be missed.” Hahn also noted, however, the future would be bright for the softball team which got big contributions from many underclassmen. She added she was “…

CHS Lady Ironmen junior pitcher Raegan Nowowiecki, who pitched the entire Piedmont Charter game and had 16 strikeouts, surpassed 100 (107 total) strikeouts for the regular softball 2021 season. The Lady Ironmen beat Piedmont Charter 12-2. (photo provided) looking forward to Coach Henley’s return for the 2022 season.” In other Lady Ironmen softball news, interim head soft-ball coach Hahn said her ladies were on the road on Tuesday, April 27, at Piedmont Charter for a Southern Piedmont 1A Conference matchup that would, at the time (and unknown to them), be the final regular season game for the 2021 Lady Ironmen ‘diamond queens’. Coach Hahn said the Lady Patriots held her squad in check through four innings, and it was a scoreless game heading into the fifth when the ladies put five runs on the board. They added another seven runs in the seventh, she said, with Piedmont finally scoring two runs in the bottom, leading to the final score of 12-2, Cherryville. Said Hahn, “We took advantage of six errors and got 12 hits in the win.” The winning pitcher in this matchup was junior Raegan Nowowiecki, who gave up two earned runs and

struck out 16 Lady Patriots on the day giving her a strikeout total of 107 for the regular season. Hitters for the CHS ladies in this matchup for were Rileigh Kiser (3-5, 2 RBIs); Aleigha Whisnant (2-3, an RBI); Laila Davis (2-5); Marigrace Moyer (2-4, 2 RBIs); Elizabeth Levine (2-4, 2 RBIs); and Riley Bryant (2 RBIs). Coach Hahn added she was glad to get the win after the slow start. Thursday, April 29, was to have been Senior Night for the five CHS seniors, but the game against BCHS’ Lady Yellow Jackets was cancelled and won’t be made up. Coach Hahn said the senior ladies instead were recog-nized at the CHS Ironmen Field – their home softball field – which was followed by a player/parent Wiffle ball game, which was won by the seniors and their parents. The seniors recognized were Faith Anthony (4 years as a player), Harlee Austin (3 years as a player), Elizabeth Levine (4 years as a player), Marigrace Moyer (2 years as a player), and Amber Roach (3 years as a player). Coach Hahn said that even though the game was cancelled the seniors really enjoyed their special day. Also, they got to see Coach A.J. Henley at the game, who came in town to greet the seniors, wish them well, and to congratulate them on a great season. (Stats and information by Brian Kiser and Susan L. Powell)

Goes up against Bessemer City, Lincoln Charter, and Thomas Jefferson by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Cherryville High’s men’s head track coach Justin Willyoung said that despite not having a sizable amount of their team available due to scheduling conflicts with other sports, “…the boy’s team held an overall lead heading into the final three events of the day” at last week’s match. “Unfortunately,” continued Willyoung, “we were not able to field anyone in those events and ultimately came in third place. However, to be winning or even close to Thomas Jefferson and Lincoln Charter that late in the meet is a testimony to how good this team is this year.” Coach Willyoung continued, “Those teams are perennially at the top of the conference year in and year out, but if we

have anything to say about it their reign may be coming to an end soon! “We came into the season with a goal to make our presence felt in the (SPC 1A) conference and region and that’s what we continue to do each meet.” Last meet’s top performances were turned in by Anthony Roberts, who set a new school record in the boy’s high jump with a leap of 5’10”,. Said Willyoung, “Anthony nearly cleared six feet (last week) and I’m certain he will get there and beyond in the weeks to come. Anthony also placed first in triple jump with an impressive leap of 39’3”, second in the long jump with a jump of 18’4”, and was a member of the winning boy’s 4 by 200meter relay team. Coach Willyoung also added that. “Jackson Owens continues to impress this season with his incredible work ethic and performances on the track. “He turned in two personal best times this meet,

placing third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.9, and third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.8. He was also a member of the winning 4 by 200-meter relay team, and (in) third place in the 4 by 100 relay team.” Coach said, “Both Anthony and Jackson have put themselves into a great position to qualify for the regional track meet.” Willyoung said other top boys finishers were senior Markize Heard: 300-meter hurdles – Third; senior Ben Hayes: 1,600-meter – Fourth; senior Matthew Torres: 400meter –Fourth; senior Chase McNeill: 800-meter – Third; junior Jack Mulvey: High jump – Second, Long jump – First, and in the Triple jump, placing Second. Willyoung noted Jack has also performed well enough thus far to potentially qualify for regionals. Lastly, but certainly not least, senior Gage Price placed Third in the Discus, and Fourth in Shot Put.
