Huge tree falls on Cherryville home; no injuries reported

At 4:23 in the morning one day last week, homeowner Carolyn Petri and her family received a huge and not-so-pleasant surprise when a large willow oak that had stood for a long time outside the front of their home on W. Church St. in Cherryville, toppled over onto their house, crushing the front porch and the inside of the home.

Ms. Petri said she has had the home since 1993 and they just moved back into the house after fixing it up. Her son, Ronnie, had debris on him from the front of the home being destroyed by the tree, which also tore up a section of the sidewalk in front of the home.

“He was sleeping in the front room when it hap-

shaken up, as we all are.”

The tree appears to be roughly 100 years or more old she noted. She called the tree trimming company of J. Douglas Tree Service, LLC, who came out and began trimming the huge tree back as quickly as possible without causing it to settle any more than it already had.

Company owner Mr. Jeffrey Douglas and his crew had been working on the tree since lunch time, they said, trimming away the small and large branches and limbs. The tree trimmers were: Nick Jones (doing the bucket cutting work); Ian Spencer; and Robert Bowen. A friend of Ms. Petri, Richard Hopple, said, as did Ms. Petri, they had no idea about what the estimate of damages to the home is at that time, waiting on word from an insurance company.

This huge, 100-plus year-old willow oak tree fell last week onto the front of the Carolyn Petri house on W. Church St., across from St. John’s Lutheran Church of Cherryville. No one was hurt in spite of the family being at home when the 4:30 a.m. accident happened. (photo by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media)

Ironmen senior football and track and field standout Kamarion “Kam” Bolin has officially signed an LOI (letter of intent) to play football with the Bluefield University Rams come this fall. The Rams call Mitchell Stadium, a 10,000seat field, their home.

Bolin, who is known to CHS sports fans as a hardcharging, tough playing ath-

lete, sat at a table Friday, April 28, at the school, with his family and friends looking on, and penned his name to the paper stating he would play for the NAIA team.

Ironmen wrestling coach and assistant football coach Matt Powers said of his talented student, “What can be said of Kam except that he is a very talented athlete, a great player and Ironman who gives his all no matter what sport he is involved in at the time. Also, he is a great kid that wants to keep getting better and better at what he does and in his life.”

His mom, Miriam Crawford, said of her son, “I am not shocked at his signing. No. I am so, so proud of him.” That sentiment was echoed by his father, Darrell Bolin, who added. “I am glad he made my momma Loura Bolin proud. See BOLIN, Page 9

Ironman Kanon Willis, who came to play baseball at Cherryville High School, recently signed a letter of intent (LOI) to play ball for the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Cobras.

Caldwell Community College , located in Hudson, NC, is a Division: NJCAA I college and, if all goes well for Willis, 18, he will add a little more pitching depth as well as batting ability to an already great program.

We didn’t let a little rain keep us from this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival! We had been making plans for months, only to see the forecast grow more and more dismal. That Saturday morning started with a bang as a line of thunderstorms moved through the area around 7 a.m. Thankfully, the system moved through quickly and we were able to set up at the festival. The first two hours were slow and quiet with just a handful of people stopping by to see us. Noon rolled around and the clouds started to clear out, which brought out the crowd! In the next two hours we talked with almost 100 people about the library and what we have to offer. We used the fabulous fishbowl of ‘Would You Rather?’ questions to get conversations started.

While the questions seemed a bit silly, there were several thoughtful answers. For example, would you rather have to be around a skunk or a porcupine? The reply was a skunk because while its spray is very smelly, there was no guarantee that it would spray; a porcupine, though, can’t help but poke a person – that’s just how they’re made. It was great fun and a nice way to get to know something about someone. We are so glad we were able to see our public at this event, and we sincerely hope to do it again next year. But with much better weather, we hope!

May is ‘Get Caught Reading’ Month; perfect for libraries! Started in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers, the campaign was created to convince people that reading books is fun. It’s also good for your health! Reading a book can reduce stress up to 68 percent, and speed-reading can help a person’s eyesight. Of course, there’s also the brain factor; reading builds a person’s vocabulary as well as helping increase one’s memory and analytical skills. Finally, reading increases empathy. Of the people who regularly donate to charity, an estimated 82 percent are readers.

OPINION

TODAY’S QUOTE:

Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.

When it comes to health, prayers are always a great start in healing!

For the past two or three weeks I have had a couple of health issues that have, to put it mildly, have given me pause for consideration.

No doubt you, dear reader, are – like my long-suffering wife – wondering what there is to pause about or even consider, especially when it comes to my health, or ANYONE’S health, for that matter. If something is wrong or appears to be wrong then, go have it checked out, right? Well, yes… and NO. At least, not in my worldview estimation. My job and what I, or my fellow news folk, do every day doesn’t preclude that we can just stop our daily grind and take a bit of time off in order to go and whine and cry at the doctor’s office about some ailment, real or imagined. Who really has time for that?

Yes, yes! I get it. I’m being a doofus. I know. Check it now, maybe get it fixed, or pay later, down

the road if I don’t. Well, folks. Turns out I’m already at that “down the road” place and maybe even a bit farther along than that. Oh, no… I’m not (so far as I know) that far gone with ignoring the few symptoms I’m having as to merit an intervention by family and friends (though that might not be too far off) in order to make me just stop and go see about things in a deeper manner. Even my long-suffering doctor isn’t to the point of calling in the Sick Person Mafia yet, but she’s edging toward it daily. I have talked about my situation to one of my friends, who, if and when he reads this, will know who he is. He’s a great guy and I pretty much trust his input as he has been through the old health is-

sues situation before. His wife is a medical person… a nurse, I believe, and he can basically run things by her first before heading off to the doctor’s office for a visit. His job also precludes his being able to jus up and drop everything and go to the doctor.

Anyway, we were talking a few weeks back and I gave him my “Cliff Notes” version of what is going on with me. He shook his head in affirmation, as if to say, “Been there, done that, bought the tee-shirt and got the hat!” I’m telling ya, we may have been brothers in another life! Thing is, I don’t believe in that reincarnation crap, so…

So, my friend, during the course of my bemoaning my health sit-rep, said, “Yeah. I know what you mean. I’ve got to get down to my weight, so my doctor doesn’t stroke out on me!” I laughed and said, “Yes sir! I get it. Me too, but in a different way. For my part, I’m trying to get up to my weight (meaning, I eat too much)!” We both had a laugh at how stubborn and ridiculous we were being and then I left to head on to

When someone knocks on your door…

Knocking on doors is as American as apple pie. Politicians, sales persons, clergy, Girl Scouts, federal census workers, and the list goes on of persons and professions who have depended on knocking on doors.

When I was a child, I sold GRIT newspapers. I needed to knock on a lot of doors to sell 20 papers which made me a cool $1. Serving churches for years, I have probably knocked on over a thousand-plus doors to invite people to church. I’m so glad no one shot me.

The recent shooting of a 16-year-old teenager in Kansas City, mistakenly knocking on the wrong door, is beyond insane. The teenage boy was at the wrong house to pick up his brothers who were a block away. Who shoots through a door without reason unless the individual is crazy or on drugs or perhaps both? The problem is, we do have a severe mental illness epidemic in America and a drug crisis. Throw in America’s

growing gun violence issues and therefore knocking on strange doors becomes a scary scenario.

I admit hearing someone knock on the door at dinner time is a bit aggravating. Usually for me, it’s a high school band member selling mulch to raise money for the band. Or, it’s someone raising money for another school project. You can’t be irritated with a 15-year-old kid who is out trying to raise money for his school. Unless, you are crazy or on drugs. Then anything might tick you off. By all means, don’t be this person!

For the most part, more and more industrious people are relying on social media to try to gain new business. It’s true you can reach more people more efficiently via Internet advertising, social media, and other media sources than by taking all day to knock on a few doors. If people want it, they will respond to your advertising.

People have rightfully withdrawn from knocking on doors because they are paranoid of disturbing someone’s favorite television program, meal or nap. This is never a good environment for making a sale or

making a friend. Maybe the day of selling magazine subscriptions, brushes, vacuum cleaners, and stuff like that door-to-door is in the past. Do any ministers ever knock on your door and invite you to church?

If someone does knock on your door, don’t immediately invite them into your house. They should have a picture identification badge for you to see. They also should talk to you about a future appointment when you can make time for the pitch. In addition, they should present you with some information containing a phone number so you can call them if you have further interest. You can always say “no thank you,” and shut your door. If you have a chain lock on your door or a locked glass door you can talk through, then you are even better off.

Give careful consideration to the hard work some people put into knocking on doors.

Better still, give even more careful consideration to how you answer the door.

work. Once there, I made up my mind to call my doctor and set up an appointment for my present health issue. Fast-forward a couple of weeks and I am glad I did so, as her diagnosis has made me feel a great deal better! I mean, I am still in some pain, but we are making forward progress in dealing with the issue and setting up further testing to rule out more serious debilitating aspects of my health situation.

Still, the truth of the matter is this: I still have to get my job done and I can’t just stop what I’m having to do to see that

through, especially at this time of year (graduation and sports tournaments as well as the general business of gathering the regular, every day news).

As somebody (maybe P.T. Barnum?) far more famous than me might have once said, “The show must go on!”

Things like work?

Things like, well… life, in general? They can’t be brought to a screeching halt due to an occasional pain here or there. Ask my boss. He is a publisher of four newspapers. While he is younger than me, he has his share of ailments sometimes, but he can’t

just stop what he’s doing whenever he gets a seemingly minor pain. He has too much at stake and he is responsible for too many folks’ livelihoods. Don’t get me wrong, if he needs to he takes care of any health concerns he may have, but we are all having to get a lot done with our upcoming papers, and in a short bit of time.

That said, just to let all my friends here in Cherryville know… I will get things done for myself like I need to. I just have to do it when I can carve out the time for it. For now, I have to put a patch on the old tire that is my body and

The extremes of weather while at college…

It is that time of year when the days can be very different from one another. One day might be cold and windy and snowy followed by several days of spring weather, when it is so nice to go outside and feel the warm breeze, listen to the birds sing, and breathe the clean air. I am definitely blessed and thankful to have been born where I can enjoy each one of these blessings. I was also blessed many years ago to attend Appalachian State University in Boone. It was my desire since I was in the second grade to become a teacher, and my wonderful mom pointed me in the direction of Boone.

could barely wait to arrive in Boone and begin my college career.

My parents had heard from various people, including some relatives, of the severe winter weather in Boone. That first winter arrived for me in Boone.

I was not too surprised with the weather for it was cold, but it was not that much different from Cherryville weather that year. I relaxed a little, and decided I would be just fine.

one of my professors declare if a student lived on campus, perfect attendance to the class was required to make an “A” in the class. Students living off campus didn’t require perfect attendance. I often wondered about that rule, but I did not question him about it.

Boone was a remarkable place in the Appalachian Mountains that I had only dreamed of actually attending at one time. I received scholarships and was accepted to ASU. My parents were so happy, and I

The next year came without much outlandish weather at first, but an awakening was on its way. And in all reality, that is exactly the time you need to be more diligent and observant of what is about to happen in your neighborhood. That sophomore year I began to hear of a massive front of extremely cold air that was on its way to Boone, but I honestly didn’t take it very seriously at first.

That is, not until I heard

As you might have guessed, there were extremely cold temperatures that winter not long after he posted that rule. And you may have already guessed that I braved the extreme 14 below zero that hit the town and surrounding areas and went to class. I don’t know how many students arrived to class, but I probably stayed there until everyone was gone. Spring weather came right on the heels of that drastic weather, and it just made it more beautiful than ever.

It is quite an experience to reminisce about the days gone by, and I will always love to talk about my experiences in Boone regardless of the extremes in weather.

Speak up believers, people need to hear the Good News!

The other day I was headed to a doctor’s appointment in Gastonia. One of my favorite driving pastimes is reading church signs. This particular day I read a sign that proclaimed, “ Preach the Gospel and when necessary, use words.” I didn’t think much of it driving by but as I waited to see my doctor it hit

me. NO, Just NO!

“Preach the Gospel and when necessary, use words” is the sentiment of an apathetic Christian. Words are always necessary. The Gospel is not good works or a pleasant demeanor. The Gospel is the good news, that though we are sinners, God loves us so much that He sent His only

Son to save us by His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave. We find in the early church the apostles were constantly preaching and teaching in public. Many were beaten, some were killed, but they refused to stop using words to bring people to Jesus. Following their example, Christians around the world are persecuted for proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. Yet here in “the land of the free and home of the brave,” we cower in fear over feeling

The Invitation

Johnny Lee, the American country music singer has a song called Lookin’ for Love” with the following lyrics:

“I was lookin’ for love in all the wrong places

Lookin’ for love in too many faces

I was alone then, no love in sight

I did everything I could to get me through the night”

It’s human nature to need and desire love. Many of us may even admit that we have searched for love, acceptance, or affirmation in the “wrong places” and came up empty and bankrupt. Fortunately, a better option is available to all. There’s someone who wants to lavish their love on each one of us - The Creator of the heavens and the earth. The One who made us in his image and after his likeness, is the very essence of love. I John 4:16 states, “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

It’s hard to wrap our minds around this supernatural, lavish love, because we are accustomed to receiving and giving imperfect, conditional love. But the Lord looks beyond our faults and loves us for who we truly are. He reveals this perfect love towards us through the sacrificial life and death of Jesus Christ. Romans 5:8 states, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.“

Invitation to Intimacy

The nature of the love of God is to draw us into a close relationship with him. It’s not enough to have a mental acknowledgement of his existence, but he invites us to open the doors of our hearts to him. Through faith in Jesus Christ and a surrendered heart, acceptance of the invitation takes us into a realm of intimacy with God that becomes experiential encounters of his exceptional love and presence. As we daily come to him and abide in him, he continually transforms our character to become more Christlike. He heals the wounds of our soul. Most importantly, he fills the void in our lives and makes us whole in a way that nothing or no one else can. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus states, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

Will you accept the invitation to be lavished by the love of God in Christ Jesus - Today and Everyday?

LET’S PRAY – “Father God, what an honor it is to be loved by you. Your love is astounding, yet it is more real than the air we breathe. I ask that you give us a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of you. Help us to grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is. May we know this love that surpasses knowledge and be filled with all the fullness of you, O God in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

uncomfortable.

What is wrong with us? Do we care so little about our Lord and Savior that we regularly deny Him with our silence? Do we care so little about other people that we would damn them to hell rather than offer them the hope of Christ? Wake up folks! God is calling us to bear witness to Him. Matthew 10:3233 states, “Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before others, I

will disown before my Father in heaven.” We can no longer be silent. I get how we got here. In decades past we became dependent on institutions to do our talking for us. The government, through the public schools, taught Bible and prayer. We had Christian chaplains in the military, hospitals, and businesses. Churches were full and the ministers, priests and Sunday school teachers did the talking. Well folks, those days are over. Teacher-led

prayer is gone. Christian chaplains are fast being replaced by secular counterparts. Our churches are half full and many are shutting down. It is up to us believers to pick up the slack. We need to see it is our job to teach our kids the Gospel. It is our job to share Jesus with our peers. It is our job to go out into the world, beyond the walls of the church and share the good news that God loves them and so do we!

So, speak up, people need to hear! And God bless you!

Willis’ baseball coach, Scott Heavner said, “Well, as always, I’m excited for Kanon, and proud of him too. He’s been here all four years with us and adds to us (the baseball program). He’s a great player and a great leader on the field as well as in the locker room.”

BOLIN

From Page 1 She’d be ecstatic at him doing this.”

Kam said he was “very excited” to be signing with the D1 NAIA school, adding his dream has always been to play college football and maybe even move on to playing professional football with someone after college.

“My main reason I chose Bluefields is so I could play football and make new friends,” he said. He added, “This has always been a dream for me (to sign and play college ball).”

Bolin said so far as a major is concerned, he is currently considering a business and general studies major, but noted that could change when he gets more settled into the college.

Bolin said the Rams football coach texted him and asked him to come to the Virginia school and have a look around and talk with him.

The school’s web site describes the college thusly, “In 1919, the Baptist General Association of Virginia appointed a committee to study the need for a junior college in southwestern Virginia. The committee met in Bristol in August of that year, at which time a large group of citizens from Bluefield and vicinity came before the committee and generously offered $75,000 and 65 acres of land

if the Association would locate the proposed college in Bluefield.

“At the meeting of the Baptist General Association in November of 1919, the committee recommended the Bluefield offer be accepted. In July of 1920, Dr. R.A. Lansdell became the first president of Bluefield College. During his administration, he assembled the first faculty, erected the first buildings and actively solicited funds for the college. In September of 1922, under Dr. Lansdell’s leadership, Bluefield College opened its doors to students seeking Christian higher education in southwestern Virginia.”

The web site further noted, “Bluefield University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. Degree-granting institutions also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.”

The Rams football team competes in the Mid-South Conference (MSC) since the 2014 fall season, according to the web site.

Of Bolin’s signing with the Rams, CHS Principal Shawn Hubers said, “Kam Bolin is a great kid with an electric personality. He plays the game with a lot of passion and his presence on the (CHS football) field will be missed.”

From Page 1 a college team.

Will said before the signing, “I’m excited to start something new. All my coaches have worked hard to get me better and to know what to do to get to the next level (of play).”

His mom, Sarah, said of him, “We are so proud of him. He has worked really hard for this. We can’t wait to watch him keep playing baseball.”

His aunt Emilie Pope said she too was proud of her nephew, agreeing with his mom that she too “…can’t wait to see him continue to play.”

CVCC’s assistant baseball coach Randall Ortiz was on hand to watch the signing, but, as per college policy, was unable to give a

comment.

Will’s grandfather, Louie Fowler, said, “We are extra proud of him! He has been playing baseball since T-ball up. We have been to all of the games.” Grandmother Joan agreed, adding, “We are really proud of him, as Louie said. He is a fine young fellow and we are sure he will do well.”

Grandmother Barbara Crews noted, “For Will, baseball has been such a dream to him. He is a good kid. He has such character!”

Dad Jody Fowler also echoed what everyone had said previously, “Obviously we are just super proud of him and his great work ethic! Will is a great example that hard work pays off and that you can achieve your dream if you are willing to work at it. He has done that since coming up through the great Cherryville Little League

program.”

Shawn Hubers, CHS Principal, said, “Will is just a super kid and the picture of what a student athlete should look like. He excels on the field and in the classroom. I am confident he will do great things in the future.”

Grandfather Billy Crews said of Will, “As proud as I am of my kids and grandkids at this moment, I am more proud of my children and grandkids for their faith in Christ. Will has used his talents and abilities to achieve his goals and ambitions, leading up to this as it takes him into the future.

“As a family, we’re excited about his commitment to CVCC,” he concluded.

Head CHS baseball coach, Scott Heavner said, “We are extremely proud of Will and his accomplishments. He is such an important part of our baseball

program. He’s a tremendous work horse and his work ethic is phenomenal! He commands respect by his presence on the field and in class. He is one of a very special CHS baseball group we have this year.”

Coach Heavner said of the 2023 CHS Ironmen baseball squad, of which Will is an integral part and player (he is the team’s catcher), “These young men, for the most part, have played together for so long. What he does for us is tremendous! He has been there for the last three years as our fulltime catcher. Not only that, but he is a great human being who comes from a great family. Will is a young man who will do great things in life, and that’s what it’s all about! All I can say to end my comments is that Will is ready!”

Make Mother’s Day special

Each and every day a new woman becomes a mother for the first time or all over again. Being a mother changes a person’s life in dramatic ways.

Mother’s Day is a great time of year to honor mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the tireless love and devotion moms offer their children. Some children provide large gestures, while others feel it’s the little things that can help a mom to feel appreciated. For those needing a little inspiration on treating their mothers in special ways, consider these ideas.

• Make mom a breakfast in bed with her favorite morning treats.

• Enjoy a movie at home with mom. Let her pick the flick and share her favorite film with you.

• Agree to not bicker for the entire day, especially if you are prone to getting into arguments with siblings.

• Put together a collage of photos from moments you have shared with mom or your family.

• Cook a meal together and learn about everyone’s favorite recipes or the family history.

• Give her a locket with

duplicate you can wear containing her photo.

• Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo.

• Treat mom to a day off from her chores. Tackle all of the jobs she normally does for the family.

• Bake a delicious dessert that mom will absolutely devour.

• Pamper mom with a gift card for her favorite nail salon or massage therapy location.

• Prepare a jar of mom’s favorite candies wrapped in pieces of paper that have loving sentiments written on them.

• Compile a playlist of

songs and artists mom prefers and download them to her phone.

• Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet and a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared.

• Write a new email each day with an inspirational quote or special words of love for mom.

• Tackle a task that she may not want to do herself, such as washing the exterior of her car and vacuuming the interior.

Mother’s Day gift ideas should come from the heart and can show mothers near and far how much they are appreciated and loved.

Learn the meanings behind popular Mother’s Day flowers

Mother’s Day is a time to express love and appreciation for mothers, sentiments that are often expressed with gifts. Flowers are a popular present to bestow on Mother’s Day, as they can brighten a room and bring a sweet aroma to any household.

While any flowers may ultimately suffice on Mother’s Day, gift givers may want to select flowers for Mom that convey specific messages. The language of flowers has been recognized for centuries. Though perhaps not as heralded as it once was, flower symbolism persists to this day. Here’s a look at some of the meanings behind certain types of flowers to help guide Mother’s Day gifting.

• Amaryllis: These plants start as bulbs and are naturally spring-blooming flowers. The name comes from the Greek word “amarysso,” which means “to sparkle,” and they symbolize pride.

• Aster: These daisy-like flowers are delicate-looking perennials. Asters make great gifts because they

Crafts lead the way for Mother’s Day gifts

Mother’s Day is a special time for children to show their appreciation for their mothers, grandmothers and the other special women in their lives. Older children typically are capable of designing their own Mother’s Day crafts or even shopping for gifts for Mom, while younger children will likely need some help from an adult.

symbolize love and daintiness.

• Begonia: There are more than 2,000 types of begonias, and the flower symbolizes deep thoughts. Begonias were made famous by French horticulturist Michel Bégon, who thought the blooms looked like beautiful girls.

• Bleeding heart: These flowers are red and pink blossoms that look like the perfect heart shape with a teardrop at the bottom. They’re beautiful and symbolic of love and affection.

• Buttercup: These are associated with youthfulness and cheerfulness and can call to mind childhood days spent picking buttercups and holding them under chins to reveal that

Youngsters may not be able to take charge of Mother’s Day festivities alone, but they certainly have the energy and enthusiasm to chip in. Handmade craft gifts are a thoughtful way for young kids to show their love for Mom. Here are a few ideas that can occupy even the youngest of hands.

Handprint butterfly photo card

All that is necessary for this craft is a printed photograph of the child’s face, paper, scissors, glue, and fin-

you like butter. The flower is known for its beauty and innocent charm.

• Camellia (white): White camellias stand for purity and innocence, but they also symbolize admiration and respect. Camellias make beautiful additions to any bouquet.

• Daisy: Daisies are happy-looking flowers and they represent motherhood and

ger paints. The child should dip hands into the paint and make four handprints on paper in some preferred colors. When dry, cut around the perimeter of the handprints. These will serve as the “wings” of the butterfly. Glue the picture of the child’s face in the middle of a piece of paper or card stock. Draw a butterfly body underneath it (or print out a stock image to use). Draw antennae sticking out of the child’s head and attach the handprints around the head and butterfly body to make the wings.

Heartfelt masterpiece

Children can draw and color all over a large sheet of construction paper or another durable paper. An adult can then use another sheet of paper to make a frame mat of sorts, cutting out a heart shape from the middle. Both pieces of paper are then trimmed to the dimensions of a photo

children.

• Delphinium: Delphiniums come in pink, white and blue varieties and embody youth and renewal. They’re a good pick if you want to convey a continued or renewed affection for a person.

• Tulip: Tulips with an orange hue are thought to represent understanding and appreciation. They can ex-

frame. The artwork is placed first and then the heart matting on top so that the artwork will show through the heart shape. Frame everything together for a lasting memento.

Fuzzy flowers

Kids can make Mom a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt. Print a photo of the child’s face and attach it to a piece of circular card stock that is roughly six inches in diameter. Have the child paint a popsicle stick green, and then attach that to the back of the round card stock. The child then glues small fuzzy pom poms to the card stock surrounding the picture to make a flower. If desired, attach a magnet to the back of the flower so it can be secured to the refrigerator.

Crafts are a great gift option for young children looking to give something special to Mom on Mother’s Day.

press appreciation for Mom or another special person. Yellow tulips symbolize happiness, while pink tulips are symbolic of love. Red blooms should be reserved for sweethearts. Various flowers symbolize feelings people want to express to their mothers, grandmothers and other special women on Mother’s Day.
