Cherryville Farmer’s Market’s first two weeks a success There is still room for it to grow larger though by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

A good sized crowd came out on Monday, May 31, to Cherryville’s Veteran’s Corner, across from the American Legion Post 100 building on Pink St., to pay tribute and honor the many brave men and women who served in the military and gave their lives for the cause of freedom. Memorial Day wreath placed at Veteran’s Corner Seeing the wreath, passersby will always remember and never forget, the sacrifices made by our military men and women by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

On Monday, May 31, 2021, a memorial wreath was placed at Cherryville’s Veteran’s Corner to honor the sacrifices of all of those members of the military who served and gave their all for their country – sometimes to the last full measure. After the service it was moved across the street to the

corner of the Post 100 American Legion Building’s property whereon sits a granite marker with all the names of those brave men and women who died in America’s wars. Done every year, according to Post 100 Legion Commander Michael Robinson, the placing of the wreath is, as he noted, “…our way of showing that we care about them and their families and that we have not, nor will we ever forget them and their sacrifices for our great country!” Robinson took a moment to introduce the speakers and presenters, namely former 82nd Airborne soldier, the Rev. Doug Nab, pastor of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, See WREATH, Page 9

Cherryville Little Theater to hold new play auditions by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Cherryville Little Theatre’s Sarah Fox Sandoval said recently she is proud to announce upcoming auditions at the end of June for the play, “Anne of Green Gables”. Sandoval said, via a media release, that “…with COVID restrictions and trying to juggle everyone’s calendar, we just got things approved and ready to go very recently! After over a year with no theatre we are

finally ready to open back up with a classic!” “Anne” is described as a “…classic tale of a plucky girl who touches the lives of everyone she meets in 1905 Prince Edward Island, Canada.” Said Sandoval, “This straight play – meaning it isn’t a musical – and has roles for people ages 16 and up. It is written by Jody Johnston Davidson and produced by a special arrangement from Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., of Denver Colorado.” Ms. Sandoval noted the play’s auditions are June 26, 27, and 28, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the rehearsals are to be held from July, through August, up until See CLT, Page 2

Cherryville Farmer’s Market manager Mary Beth Tackett said she is, overall, pleased with how the first two weeks of the 2021 Market have gone. In the past rain and inclement weather had negative impacts on the markets but folks still came out. Then along came the coronavirus pandemic and things took a nasty turn for the worse and the state shut down all markets and mercantile interactions of similar types and formats. However, the good news, See MARKET, Page 10

Cherryville Area Ministries has new lighting, ceiling tiles installed Director Curry said the total cost for the work was $42,354.14 by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Things look brighter these days inside of Cherryville Area Ministries as a result of generous giving and donations that helped get new lighting fixtures and ceiling work done. The reason for the work needing to be done had to do with their ceiling collapsing due to water damage from water getting between the roof and the ceiling. Simply put, the work “had to get done,” said Ministries Director Sherry Curry, who added that through a very generous $15,000 grant from the Carrie E. and Lena V. Glenn Foundation, along with a $5,000 indoor grant CAM applied for through the City of Cherryville’s Chamber of Commerce, the work did indeed get done. That job took from April 12, 2021, when they closed for work to begin, until May 7, 2021, when it was completed so the store could open back up on May 10. Said Ms. Curry, “We applied for the indoor grant through the City of Cherryville Chamber of Commerce and were approved for $5,000 to go to this project, and the rest of the money needed to get the project completed was given to us through churches, individuals and businesses.”

The interior of the Cherryville Area Ministries store looks much brighter thanks to new lighting and a new ceiling. (photos by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media)

Curry noted the total cost for the construction and lighting installations was $ 42,354.14. As for the grant. Curry

noted, “We applied for the grant back before COVID hit and were approved during COVID, making it harder for us to meet the

TODAY’S QUOTE:

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God’s handwriting. –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Staying safe as you get back to “normal” I was on the phone the other day with one of my many cousins back up in Kentucky and she was in a bit of a dither! Seems she doesn’t know whether to be mad, glad, happy or sad as pertains to what she calls, “This here getting back up to snuff with the ‘conomy (that’s ‘economy’ in western Kentucky parlance)!”, especially when it comes to Americans shaking off their COVID blues and making an effort to get back to start trying to live normal lives again. I asked, “What seems to be the main problem? I mean, you told us you and your hubby and your kids have all gotten your vaccinations, right? So, what gives?” (BTW…they all have jobs that are in

that group allowing them to get vaccinated in the first ‘wave’ of vaccinations.) After a bit of ‘hemming’ and ‘hawing’ around, she finally said they actually couldn’t really remember enough of what their old ‘normal’ was like. They were almost terrified to actually

enjoy being able to, she said, go mask-free at some of the places they used to frequent, as well as enjoying the perks of things being more relaxed now that the nation’s COVID numbers are dropping. And, given that Kentucky’s governor – like our own governor – is a staunch Democrat, my cousin and her family are fearful that if he (said Kentucky governor) perceives that, like the famous Chicken Little of the old folk tale the “sky is falling” fame, more trouble of a COVID-kind is ‘a-brewing’, then things may once more be curtailed, if not outright shut down, thereby prohibiting (yet again) the rights of “all us good folk!” “Whew!”, I said.

And this

“That’s quite a lot of jumping to conclusions on your part, isn’t it? I mean, as I said earlier, y’all have all been vaccinated, yeah? I guess I just don’t see what all the fuss and bother is about, really. All y’all really want to do is maybe go see a movie or go out and eat with your families, or maybe just visit, or go back to church, without having to wear out your horn honking an ‘amen’ every time the preacher gets particularly righteous, right? Or am I missing something here?” After a bit of a pregnant pause, she snorted into the phone, and said, “Well, yeah. It’s that. And then again, it’s not JUST that!” I replied in my usual

not-so-subtle way, “Say what!?” Come again?” Anyway, a moment aside here folks… We all have close family members like my darling cousin who, when you think you’re reasoning with them correctly and starting to make some sort of headway with helping them come to grips with a problem, things just have a way of ‘going south’ with the general conversation in a big way, and that almost at light speed, right? Well… THIS conversation was that case! Not a bloody thing I said was going to help assuage her worried mind or steer her clear of anything of what was, or wasn’t, real when it came to their family getting back to

some semblance of their brand of normalcy, let alone positioning them to boldly go where they haven’t gone since the early part of 2020 – namely, out to eat at sit-down restaurant, visiting with family and friends, or going to see a movie. So, at the end of our call, I told her we loved her and her family and to put everything in God’s able hands. I mean, after all, He’s been working on this ‘life’ thing for a long while now, right? Surely, He knows what He’s doing. Now, if we can just convince our fearless leaders (and my dear cousin) to follow His lead! Stay safe out there as you get back to normal, y’all!

Go to work and grow your financial security

was certainly true in regard to Larry and his heartbreaking diagnosis and incredible pain. Another amazing thing that happened here is the fact that Larry’s older brother, Roger, preached his funeral. Roger is a dedicated preacher who loves his church congregation and his family and did an amazing job at Larry’s funeral. I cannot say enough about this family of sisters and brothers who look after each other and accept others into their family. They have the “joy of Jesus” in their hearts, and I am so glad they do. They know the joy of being together as a family as they stick together in all of life’s blessings as well as challenging situations. May God continue to bless each one.

Working a job that pays you money is your best assurance for financial security. In Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial 2021 manufacturers, construction, transportation companies, any entity that sells products, drivers and almost all employers are begging for workers. Many Americans were assisted by the large unemployment payout of the pandemic. This was initially helpful. Many people such as restaurant workers and others had lost their jobs. The flush of cash from the government kept families fed and financially stable. There has been a downside to this now as manufacturing has slowed down so much that trucks and cars have often been delayed from service because of the stall in manufacturing parts. From October through March, I waited for a part out of New York for my Ford 150 truck. Finally, it was made and delivered but with this kind of parts production there have been some unhappy car owners Many people search for ‘get rich’ schemes. The best way to build wealth

and financial security is to work 40 to 45 hours a week. Take some of your money and buy food and provide for your family. Pay your utility bills, make your house payment, give some to our local church or charity, make your car payment and put as much of your income as possible into an IRA through your bank, a 401k or a 403b through where you work. Also buy safe, solid stocks that have a long track record of performing well. Money will grow over time if invested wisely. My church friend, Harold Rice, insisted on putting $6 a month into my Guidestone retirement fund when I was a 17-year-old pastor. He did this every month for about a year of so until I graduated from high school and left the church. I long forgot about that but started checking into it a couple of years back and discovered that little account has grown to over $53,000. My salary at the age of 17 was $60 per month. My Guidestone retirement investment was 10 percent of what I made, which was $6. Both financial figures sound funny and they were somewhat barely enough to buy my gas to the Liberty church in rural Johnson County. Over 35 years that little bit of money which might have

been $100 grew to over $53,000 and is a now a nice addition to my retirement portfolio. The bottom line to that story is that I was performing a service of work that I loved. I received a small amount of compensation and even miniature retirement pay. However, eventually it became something. Find the best job you can find and work that job. Work as many hours as are available. Negotiate the best pay you can negotiate. Take care of your family and look for every opportunity to save money for down the road. It starts with doing something. There is a job you can learn. So many are willing to train new employees today. Be willing, be open to learn and in a few months, it may amaze you how well you are doing and how much your money is growing. Go to work. Go somewhere to work. It’s better to go somewhere and find enjoyable work than to sit home in miserable idleness wishing you had pursued the ‘America Dream’. Wishing will not get it done for you. You have to GO to the opportunities. People all over America have done this during our entire existence and you can benefit your life this way as well.

FLAG DAY From Page 4 Another, somewhat obscure, piece of the Flag’s history is the first observance of June 14th, Flag Day was organized in 1885 by a 19-year-old schoolteacher from Waubeka, WI, Bernard J. Cigrand. It was not an official celebration, but it was the first known ceremony in honor of our nation’s ensign, according to Cigrand’s biographer historian James L. Brown in his book, ‘The Real Bernard J. Cigrand: The Father of Flag Day.’” Cigrand was passionate about our Flag. He is said to have delivered more than 2,000 speeches during his quest for an official, national day for the observance of Flag Day. It took him three decades of effort and in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 for the observance. Likewise, President Calvin Coolidge issued his own proclamation in 1927. However, it would take Congress another 33 years to declare it a national day of remembrance, not quite a national holiday, which President Harry Truman signed into law on Aug. 3, 1949. Today, more than ever, it is important for patriotic Americans to show appropriate reverence for the Flag. We live in an era of unheard of, unexpected disdain for the American way of life – particularly among the younger generations. There are those who would see our Democracy replaced by socialism –even communism among those who do not know of what they speak. Thus, it is important to show them the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ and the reasons we take the time to reflect on and respect Old Glory on June 14. What better place to learn the dos and don’ts of the American Flag than at the American Legion Website. Here are a few interesting observations: The Flag Code is The American Legion Flag Code. On Flag Day, June 14, 1923, The American Legion

and representatives of 68 other patriotic, fraternal, civic and military organizations met in Washington, DC, for the purpose of drafting a code of flag etiquette. The 77th Congress adopted this codification of rules as public law on June 22, 1942. It is Title 4, United States Code Chapter 1. A flag that has been used to cover a casket cannot be used for any other proper display purpose. A flag that has been used to cover a casket CAN be used for any proper display purpose to include displaying this flag from a staff or flagpole. You must destroy the flag when it touches the ground. As long as the flag remains suitable for display, the flag may continue to be displayed as a symbol of our great country. There has been a change to the Flag Code that no longer requires the flag to be properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. There has been NO CHANGE to Flag Code section 6(a), which states: “It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.” The Flag Code states that when the flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display it is to be disposed of by burning in private. The Flag Code as revised and adopted by the Congress of the United States in 1942 has never included the word(s) “private” or “in privacy.” Section 8(k) of the Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Since 1937, The American Legion has promoted the use of a public flag disposal ceremony. This ceremony is a fitting tribute and an overt expression of patriotism, which enhances the public’s understanding of honor and respect due the American flag.

saying, “All of it came from You anyway.” God says, “Put Me first in your life and watch what I do.” You may think you can’t afford to tithe, but the reality is, you can’t afford NOT to. This principle also applies in other areas as well. Have you ever said or heard someone say, “I just don’t get anything out of going to church?” What about, “The church does nothing for me.” Or, “I am not getting anything out of the worship service.” In these cases, we need to ask ourselves or the other person the questions of, “What have I put into the church? Have I been faithful in the areas of tithing, attending regularly, serving, and praying

for my church? Have I asked God to cleanse my heart and to prepare me for worship? Is my idea of church all about my needs or do I consider others and most importantly God Himself?” When we find ourselves faithfully giving generously (sowing) in all of these areas, we will find God blessing generously in the areas of our needs. So, the next time we feel like we are not getting anything out of church we should ask ourselves what have I put into my church and have I prepared my heart to worship? If we sow generously, we will reap generously.

Baseball Ironmen wrap up regular 2021 season 13-1 overall Team finishes 11-1 in the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Cherryville High’s Ironmen baseball team wrapped up their 2021 regular season with an 8-2 win over county rivals the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets on Thursday, June 10, at Fraley Field. Prior to that though, on Tuesday, June 8, the boys went up against the Eagles of Lincoln Charter for their second time this season, losing 5-1. Coach Heavner’s starting pitcher in the CHS/LC matchup was freshman Eli Newsome, who struck out four batters and walked none. Landon Hahn relieved Newsome in the fifth inning, striking out one Eagles batter and walking another. Trip Creason followed Hahn on the mound, coming in the sixth inning and striking out

one batter before the Eagles took the game. Hitters for the Ironmen were Landon Hahn (3-4, a triple); Christian Hahn (1-4, an RBI); Ty Heavner (1-3, on base on an error); Will Fowler (1-3); and Will Heavner, who got on base on a walk. The Ironmen had one run off of six hits in the game; committed three errors, and left eight men on base. In the last game of the Ironmen’s regular season, the BCHS Yellow Jackets came to town. The CHS men won this matchup 8-2, capping their COVID-shortened regular season at 13-1 overall, and 11-1, in SPC 1A play. Starting pitcher for the CHS team this outing was Kanon Willis, who struck out four batters, and walked one. Collin Robinson came in the sixth inning and struck out five 'Jackets batters. Hitters for the Ironmen were: Christian Hahn (2-4, a double, in on an error, scored on a wild pitch, and one RBI); Chase Miller (a

home run, two RBIs, two walks); Will Fowler (2-4, a double, an RBI, and a walk); Landon Hahn (an RBI, a walk, and in on an error); and Trip Creason, who had an RBI. Others scoring or otherwise doing well for the Ironmen were: Ty Heavner (walked, and was walked in); Willis (two walks); Tobias Miller (on base due to being hit by a pitch); Will Heavner (on base due to an error); Logan Hendricks (walked); and Eli Newsome (hit by a pitch/on base). Miller’s homer was only the second for the Ironmen this season; the first coming off the bat of senior Quinlan Sanford earlier in the season May 11, in the home game against Piedmont Charter. The Ironmen scored their eight runs off of just five hits. They made no errors and left 10 runners on base. The first round of the state playoffs is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 15, at a place yet to be determined. (Additional information by Susan L. Powell and Danny Eaker)

The Eagles batter swings mightily but Ironmen catcher Will Fowler has it in his mitt for the strike!

Ironmen lead-off batter Landon Hahn connects with the ball for what would be a triple for the young man in last Tuesday’s matchup against the visiting Lincoln Charter Eagles.

CHS starter for the CHS/BCHS game last Thursday, Kanon Willis, sends a pitch toward the plate as first baseman Logan Hendricks watches.

BCHS shortstop Zach Adams watches closely but the ball gets right by him for the strike. Ironmen catcher Will Fowler grimaces but he has the catch firmly in the web of his mitt.

As Yellow Jackets second baseman Caleb Summey stretches for the throw to get the Ironmen base runner out, speedy Will Heavner slides into base just in the nick of time!

Ironmen Will Heavner (#17), Landon Hahn (#1), and Christian Hahn (#3) congratulate Chase Miller (#10), as they walk back to the dugout after both the Hahn brothers came in thanks to Miller’s home run against BCHS in the third inning of last Thursday’s game.

CHS Ironman Landon Hahn slides into third base under the watchful eye of the infield umpire and Eagles third baseman Matt Cipriano.

Also speaking at the ceremony was former Air Force veteran Reggie Walker, Councilwoman Jill Parker-Puett, Lynette Christensen, and Jean Skibo, of the Unit 100 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Commander Robinson noted the Legion placed over 700 flags at Cherryville-area cemeteries while Mrs. Christensen thanked the City of Cherryville, the Police and Fire Departments, City Manager Jeff Cash, the Sons of the American Legion, Cherryville Post 100, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Jean Skibo noted her grandson, Will Skibo, a Pack 75 Scout, was there to help with the service and to observe. She then read the short but poignant, 15line John McCrae poem, “In Flanders Field the Poppies Grow”, which is the centerpiece for many American Legion Women’s Auxiliary groups to begin their paper poppy sales fund raising drive. Judy McSwain read a poem then Mrs. Parker-Puett introduced the one of the

He is retired from military service now and concentrates his energies on his community. Said Mr. Walker, “It is an honor and a privilege to be here.” He asked, in essence, “What can we do more (for our nation’s veterans)”, adding that “…we have to do more!”

Walker helps raise support dogs for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disease, or PTSD, which affects so many military members today. Rev. Nab then came up to speak and talked about what Memorial Day means to him, as a former veteran. After a gun salute by the Post 100 Honor Guard and “Taps” performed by Legionnaire Mickey Brown, and a prayer by Post 100’s

However, due to COVID we did not have our yearly fundraisers and our store was shut down for three months due to COVID.” She continued, “When we opened back up, we had to follow the CDC guidelines for everyone’s safety, causing our customer base to be low and the store sales to not be nearly as high as they used to be. The Board of Directors spoke at churches and sent out letters letting people know we were ready to do the project and had to meet a deadline. We contacted the Glen Foundation and we did get an extension for June, which was a great help.” Curry said through all the community support and after a long four weeks, they were able to meet the deadline of the grant and complete the ceiling and lighting project. Curry said the Board, and she and her fellow CAM workers, staff, and volunteers wanted to

Sherry said the general consensus on the ceiling and light-

ing project is that everyone is pleased with it. “It is a project that was much needed,” she said. As for the work environment being brighter, store manager Barbara Decker said, “With this recent project and past renovations, the store has become a more enjoyable and welcoming place to shop.” In addition to Ms. Curry and Decker, other CAM employees are Dale “Sgt. Dale” Towns, who has been with CAM, he said, for more than 10 years; Lisa Hill; Erlene Howard; Diane Beebe; Jenny Smith; and Liz Guiton.

A CFM staple, Leonhardt Farms, out of Lincoln County, was back again, and both Ann Hall and Gail Connor said folks were glad to see them back.

MARKET From Page 1 noted Mrs. Tackett, is now, thanks to vaccines and social distancing and masks, we are working our way back to “normal”, or at least as normal as we can be, all things considered. Things appear to be somewhat slowed down and there are yet to be the good-sized numbers of people and vendors yet, but Tackett is optimistic. Nevertheless, she gets right to the point when asked her opinion of how things have done these first two weeks. “I feel that the market has done well for the first two markets and we look forward to the new faces this season brings,” she said. As for who is slated to come and set up for the market in the coming weeks, Mary Beth noted, “I’m still working on past vendors’ return dates and if they will be returning, along with adding some new vendors.” One of the newer vendors at the first market held on Thursday, June 2, was a tent/booth set up by Cherryville carpenter and handyman Wesley McSwain, and worked by himself and his

Said Wesley, “This (venture) began as a COVID ‘stayat-home’ experiment of mine and sort of grew from there.” McSwain can be reached at (704) 616-0786, or by emailing him at wesmcswain@icloud. com. One of the newer vendors is a food truck owned by Anna Miller, of Anna’s Sweet Treats. They were there at the first market, but not at the second. probably on a twice-a-month basis.” Miller said her food truck does concessions for festivals, parties, school fundraisings and what-not. They sell funnel cakes, deep-fried Oreos, ice cream, and all sorts of summer drinks and other items. Miller, who calls Vale in Lincoln County home, said, “I’ve been doing Cherryville events now for about 16-17 years but this is the first farmer’s market over here that I’ve done.” She added, “So far, the weather’s been good. It’s held and the rain (forecast for that Thursday, June 2) has moved on.” Ms. Miller can be reached at (828) 244-2677, or by emailing her at annasweettreats@yahoo.com. Fan favorites Leonhardt Farms and Martha’s Baked Goods are back for this year’s market, and both are glad to be back at it and seeing old friends and customers. Ann Hall and Gail Connor have been working the Cherryville Farmer’s Markets for about eight years, they said, and noted that it “feels good” to back! “What is great,” added Ms. Hall, “is that the people who come by and buy our produce all say they are happy we are here!” That sentiment is echoed by Martha Pate, who laughed and said, “Well, I’m back again this year!” Pate talked about her erstwhile ‘retirement’ (she’s not; at least not totally), noting that she’s “… still retired and loving it! But I’m BACK!” Her delightful, homemade cakes and mini-loafs are excellent and once they are put out are usually gone in a matter of minutes. Tackett also noted that in the past the CFM has had local entertainment, though, for now, there aren’t any plans of having any. However, it’s not totally “off the table” of ideas, as she added, “We are looking into that.” The Cherryville Farmer’s Market will be back again on Thursday, June 17, said Mrs. Tackett, so, “Come on by and see us!”
