Ted Budd wins NC’s US Senate GOP primary by DAVID LARSON Carolina Journal U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, who currently represents N.C.’s 13th Congressional District, has won the Republican primary for the state’s U.S. Senate race, according to the Associated Press, the New York Times, and CNN. Budd’s candidacy was given a major boost over key rivals after an endorsement by former President Donald Trump and big spending on his behalf by the Club for Growth PAC. The North Carolina Republican Party tweeted: “Congratulations to Ted Budd, winner of the U.S. Senate Republican Primary! NC is ground zero for defeating the radical Democrats, reclaiming the Senate majority. Ted Budd will lead the way in November, taking our Family First, conservative values to DC!” NC GOP Chair Michael Whatley added, “Congratulations to @TedBuddNC – a proven conservative who will be tough on China and Russia, protect our southern border and fight inflation and high gas prices.”

CPD From Page 1 Chief Jenks said the theme of this year’s was “Back The Badge NC” and their observance was just a small part of a state-wide memorial to those officers in the state who have been killed in the line of duty. “The memorial is a way for all of us to thank our law enforcement officers for protecting and serving our communities,” noted Chief Jenks. “And in the process, we at CPD want to also thank all those who brought us food, desserts, and small goody bags.” He noted how a group started an “Adopt-A-Cop” program in Mount Holly

Former President Donald Trump with Ted Budd at a March 2022 rally on Budd’s behalf. (photo provided) U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, who will become the “senior senator from North Carolina,” congratulated Budd, saying, “Congratulations to my friend @TedBuddNC on winning the GOP nomination. Ted is a proven conservative problem solver, and I will be doing everything I can between now and November to help make sure he is elected NC’s next U.S. Senator.” In the early days of the race, former Republican governor of North Carolina Pat McCrory held a significant lead, but Budd consistently whittled away at this advan-

tage. In January of this year, a Civitas poll found McCrory still on top, with 24 percent of the vote to Budd’s 19 percent. But in late polling it became clear Budd’s momentum had carried him far ahead of his rivals. A May poll from the Hill had Budd at 43 percent and McCrory 27 points behind with 16 percent. Now Budd will look ahead to the November general election where he will face former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, who is the presumptive winner of the Democratic nomination.

Said Chief Jenks, “We, the men and women of the Cherryville Police Department, are all very appreciative of the gifts and well-wishes we received from the public. It is very important we never forget these fallen heroes that sac-

rificed it all for our safety and freedom. Jenks thanked his officers who were able to be at the ceremony as well as Chaplain Upchurch and St. John’s pastor, the Rev. G. Scott Homesley. Officers present or involved in the ceremony that day were (in addition to Chief Jenks):

Det. Lt. Mark Stout; Lt. Brandon Parker; Sgt. Wes Bennett; and patrol officers Jessica Richardson and Grayson Stout. Chief Jenks said all of his officers and staff received a goody bag, including their newest officer, Ayko, the K-9 officer, who is handled by Sgt. Josh Colvard.

She is right. Absolutely right! There are NO words left to describe what we have become. One can only fear and wonder where we go from here. Just when you didn’t think life could get any worse; any crazier, it does. And I don’t think we can blame it all on the pandemic and its after effects on our society as a whole. No, I fear it is something much deeper than any pandemic’s havoc on our economy and lifestyles. This seems to be an animosity; an evil that is worse than “bone deep”. This is what I would call “heart deep”; that is to say, a disease that appears to have taken up residence within the very heart of mankind; of humanity; and blackened, or darkened, it to the point there is no more compassion or caring; no more pity; no more…love for our fellow man to be found anywhere. We must get a grip on things now while there is still time for us to do

so, or else we will all be eaten up from within by this heinous cancer of hatred and despair. And, for God’s sake! Let’s stop politicizing and pontificating on every aspect of trying to deal with the nature of evil in the world. Let us face it head-on and call it what it is – EVIL, plain and simple. No amount of psychoanalyzing the actions like those of this poor demented fool’s is going to lessen or change it per se, or make it feel

any better or less hurtful for those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, loss, but perhaps a concerted effort at a more grass-roots, down-to-a-family-level attempt might be the key to healing steps starting off in the right direction. I don’t know. All I know is, as the old saying goes, “When all is said and done; there is usually a lot more said than is ever done!” Truer words were never spoken (or written)! We simply must get a

grip on our societal sanity as we are running out of words to describe what we are becoming. My prayers are for those poor families in Texas and in New York and elsewhere who have been impacted by the deaths of their precious loved ones, now and in the past. May God heal you and protect you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you now and in your hour of greatest need always.

To stupidity and beyond! by DR. RICHARD D. KOCUR “To infinity and beyond!” In November of 1995, the first of four blockbuster animated films in the Toy Story franchise was released by Walt Disney Pictures to both audience and critical acclaim. With Toy Story, astute businesspeople at the Walt Disney Company created a cash-cow franchise capable of producing revenue for years to come by creating and delivering a product that appealed to their target audience of parents and children. Unfortunately, the Walt Disney Company’s leap from a

business focused on producing broadly appealing content to a business exemplifying the latest version of woke corporate activism, redefining the nature and use of a company’s products, has taken the company to the height of stupidity and beyond. Disney is a long-time part of the landscape, literally and figuratively, in the state of Florida. The company’s 2020 annual report indicates that of Disney’s 203,000 global employees, nearly 40 percent are in the state of Florida; and a small but vocal minority of those Flor-

ida cast-members are not happy. On March 28, 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill (HB) 1557, Parental Rights in Education. According to the governor’s website, the bill, “re-enforces parents’ fundamental rights to make decisions regarding the upbringing of their children.” The bill also, “prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through 3rd grade and prohibits instruction that is not age-appropriate for students.” The Walt Disney See STUPIDITY, Page 6

Do children want to spend their days constantly looking up to see who might be entering their room with an assault weapon? groceries. When will this happen at your school, grocery store, house of worship or any place else? At one time, Americans never imagined such horrors as many of us have lived to see. One mass shooting has led to another and another. Your school or church or whatever the event is must plan for an attack every time you gather. If we do not try to protect the people at such events and gatherings, then we are throwing caution to the wind and subjecting people we love to the possibilities of being killed. What is the answer? The Buffalo grocery had an armed guard. This was not enough for a gunman who had strategized and outgunned the security guard who gave his life trying to save others. One major problem is such an evil person has the element of surprise. They have surveyed the location. Innocent people are caught off guard. People may even be carrying weapons but might not even have the time to draw their weapon because the rapid fire of the attacker’s weapon takes that person’s life before he or she can reach for their weapon. What is the answer? Do we equip every teacher in America with a semi-automatic weapon? Should teachers and grocery store shoppers and ministers carry assault weapons at all times?

Do you want to put on your Sunday dress and then strap on your assault rifle so you might have a chance of defending yourself? State and federal lawmakers continue to wrestle with what to do. One suggestion is to take away all the guns. This might be okay until Russia or China invades us and we all have to fight. The local villain may find a way to order all the parts he needs online to assemble an assault weapon and you have no way to defend yourself. This possibility must be made illegal. Evil finds a way to release hate and fulfill deranged fantasies. This does not mean we give up. Limiting assault weapons to people 25 and older, strict background checks, waiting periods and licenses is possibilities. Limiting all gun purchases to people over 21 is another possibility. Eighteen-year-olds use guns in the military but are trained and strictly supervised. Do Americans really need assault type weapons? Would we be willing to ban them if it would save an elementary school of children from a murderous rampage? It’s all too late for Uvalde, Texas families and so many more. State and federal government must make some real decisions. In the meantime, we have to protect ourselves.

Finding ourselves at a “now what” moment

UNITY (4th and Final Part of “the Power of Praying in Agreement” series) In this month’s series, “The Power of Praying in Agreement” I presented how important it is to not only personally pray, but to pray with others. I shared that effective prayers should be in alignment with God’s word and that praying with others can add a layer DANYALE PATTERSON of strength in combating demonic forces in spiritual warfare. Today, I will teach the #1 key to praying in agreement. Praying in agreement is not only a biblical principle, according to Mathew 18:19, (ESV) “Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” but an effective spiritual weapon. The bible says in 2 Corinthians 10:4, (GNT) “The weapons we use in our fight are not the world’s weapons but God’s powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds…” An Important Key Through the years, I have been a part of many prayer groups and have prayed with hundreds of people. I have seen many answered prayers and some prayers that didn’t get answered. I began to analyze the differences between prayers that were answered and those that weren’t. I noticed that sometimes the people I prayed with didn’t have the faith for what I was believing. They either prayed the opposite of what I asked, or prayed prayers full of doubt, fear and unbelief. It’s like going to a judge in court and having a witness who is supposed to support your cause, say something contrary to what you have said; they will hurt the effectiveness of your defense. The bible says in James 1:7 (NLT) “... Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.“ An important key to praying in agreement is to make sure that when you pray with someone, you both are on the same page or in unity of what you are asking God to do. By having prayer partners that truly agree in faith with me, I have seen many prayers for healing, restoration, provision, salvation, protection etc. answered quickly. I believe you will too. PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, thank you for all the prayers you have answered over the years. I know that you are a good God and I know that you love me. Help me to pray bold prayers that are full of faith. Drive doubt, fear, and unbelief from my heart. Lead me to others who will pray powerful prayers. Also, empower the body of Christ to pray effectively like never before, so we can push back the darkness. I love you and I am humbled that I can come to you, the Creator of the Universe, to ask for help and to fellowship with you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. have not been called to a normal life. Praise God that we have been called to more than simply twiddling our thumbs. We have been called by the grace of God to present a picture of His kingdom here and now. Thank goodness that Peter’s stint as a fisherman didn’t last long. After encountering the risen Christ on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, he heads back to Jerusalem. It is in that upper room in Jerusalem that the disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter gives the first sermon of the church, and the church officially begins. What I love about the verse that I selected for this month’s reflection is once again the disciples find themselves at a “now what” moment. The Holy Spirit has flooded them, Peter has given that first sermon, and yet they aren’t really sure

praying about them, we miss out on where God is calling us. If we are not constantly praying, we are missing out on the greatest source of communication we have with God. By that same token though if prayer is separated from our actions, and we do not live like we pray, we are not showing God to the world. I think in this season between Easter and Pentecost the challenge for the church and the challenge for us as individuals is to become those who pray and show the goodness of God to all who we come into contact with. I think we would do well to take a page from these disciples, trusting that the “now what” question will be answered by God in due time.

how to proceed. They went from being a community of roughly 82 people to a community of 3,082 people overnight. It is hard to know what to do with a change that large. So, the disciples do something countercultural; something I think we as 21st century Christians could really take a lesson from; they devote themselves to prayer and showing God’s goodness. It seems so simple, devote yourself to prayer and show God’s goodness to the community and to the world. However, in the church as we are currently constructed today, we are good at one of those two things, but not both, and certainly not together. The more I read Scripture, the more I have become convinced that prayer and action are inseparable. If we do things without first

But maybe a substantial number of parents will see Disney’s actions for what they are, an attempt to supplant parental control over what values are taught to their children and by whom. Maybe the forces of the free market will spring into action and new entertainment options will emerge to fill the market void left by Disney. And maybe, like Buzz Lightyear, who mistakenly believed his wings would carry him to infinity and beyond, Disney will realize that forcing extremist values and ideals upon its customers simply will not fly.

CHS Ironmen are 2022 West 1A Regional champs Team’s wins best 2 of 3 games; ends Union Academy Cardinals run by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The 2022 iteration of Coach Scott Heavner’s CHS Ironmen diamond kings are the NCSHAA West 1A Regional champs, defeating the Cardinals of Union Academy in the best 2 of 3 matchups last week. The Ironmen eked out a 6-5 win on Saturday, May 28 at Fraley Field as they came home for a final Game Three matchup against the Cardinals, who won their May 26 game at the Cardinal’s home field, causing the third game to be played as the series was tied 1-1. The Cardinals had the lead 5-3 going into the sixth inning but the Ironmen scored three runs in that inning on a hit by lefty hitter Colin Huss. Coach Heavner used four pitchers in this battle, starting with Kanon Willis, who went one and a third innings before being relieved by Brayden Reynolds. Reynolds had a tough time and Heavner sent in Chase Miller, who finished that inning. Junior righthander Landon Hahn came in and pitched, coming back also in the seventh inning and wrapping things up for the Ironmen. Hahn got the win. Hitters for the Ironmen were Collin Robinson (1-3, an RBI); Will Fowler (1-3); Willis (1-2, an RBI); Tobias Miller (1-3); Trip Creason (1-2, and RBI); and Huss

(1-1, 3 runs driven in). With this win, the CHS Ironmen are the NCHSAA 2022 West 1A Regional champs! They move on to play the Perquimans Pirates at the 2022 Baseball State Championship series starting Friday, June 3, at 8 p.m., at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs, NC. This 1A Championship pits #1 Perquimans against #3 CHS with Game 1 (as announced) starting June 3, at 8 p.m., with Perquimans as the home team. Game 2 will be June 4, at 2 p.m., with CHS as the home team. Game 3, should one be needed, will be also on June 4, at 8 p.m., with Perquimans again as the home team. Please note, according to the NSHAA, Game 3 could and will be moved to 5 p.m., if the other series at the site does not reach Game 3. In this series: Game One (May 24) The Ironmen won this one by a score of 9-1, with the winning pitcher being Brayden Reynolds. Reynolds struck out 3 and walked 2. Chase Miller followed young Reynolds in this one. The Ironmen got their nine runs off of 10 hits. The game was played at Fraley Field. Hitters were: Hahn (a base hit and a walk); Robinson (two base hits and a fielder’s choice); Heavner (2-4, an RBI); Fowler (on base/fielder’s choice); Willis (2 hits, one a home run; a walk; and a fielder’s choice; an RBI);Chase Miller (3 hits; a home run; hit by a pitch; 4 RBIs); Tobias Miller (a walk); Trip Creason (a walk); and Huss

With him are, seated, left to right: mom, Stephanie; Jack; dad, Mark; and a photo of his sister, Katie, who attends John Chavis Middle School. Standing and in the back row, left to right, are: grandfather, Jerry Randall; CHS Ironmen head track coach Justin Willyoung; CHS Athletic Director and head men’s basketball coach, Scott Harrill; CHS Principal Shawn Hubers; and Jack’s grandmother, Patsy Randall. MULVEY From Page 1 good to sign to play sports at the next level.” Dad, Mark a CHS graduate (1990) and a Citadel graduate (1994), said, “We are extremely proud of him. The past two years were hard due to COVID and such, but his senior year was fantastic! We are proud of him both academically and athletically.

We are proud he chose The Citadel to test and challenge himself.” Mr. Mulvey noted Jack’s Eagle project was landscaping the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville. He also helped build the benches there as well. Jack’s mom, Stephanie said, “Yes, as Mark said, we are very proud of him indeed. Our dreams for him have come true and we are happy he is able to play sports. He has had a great year!”

Stephanie said, speaking for Jack’s sister, Kate, that she too is very proud of her brother. Young Mulvey’s grandparents, Jerry and Patsy Randall, were there, smiling as he put pen to paper and signed with the Citadel Bulldogs. Said grandmother, Patsy, “We are overwhelmed with joy and so proud of him and his accomplishments.” Grandfather Jerry agreed, adding, “We, of course, feel very proud of him and for

Posing with their coach are the 2022 NCHSAA state champion 2022 4x400-meter relay team. Left to right are: Mason Grindstaff; The Citadel signee Mulvey; head track coach Justin Willyoung; Cooper Sloan; and Jackson Owens. him. He is a good young man. He does things the right way.” Jack said he has no plans to go into the military after graduating from The Citadel and will work toward a Master’s in Business while there. Mulvey’s Ironmen track coach, Justin Willyoung, said of his protégé, “Jack has been a valuable part of our track team and will be greatly missed as a major contributor to the Ironmen track and field program. Based on available documentation and records, Jack wraps up his track career as the school record

holder in the high jump and as a state champion on the 2022 4x400-meter relay team. Jack’s athleticism made him a competitor in every event he attempted both on the track and in the field. I know that he will have a successful track career at The Citadel as I truly believe that his potential in the sport is barely tapped at this point, and he will show tremendous growth over the next few years. I am very happy that he has chosen to continue his track and field career. I could not be more proud of him, and I’m excited to watch him in the future.”

Scott Harrill, CMAA, CIC, CHS Athletic Director and CHS Boys Basketball Coach, said, “Jack has had an amazing senior year in athletics. We are proud of him having this opportunity to run at The Citadel. We know he can do anything he sets his mind to. We wish him nothing but the best as he represents the Ironmen.” CHS Principal Shawn Hubers agreed, adding that, “Jack has done a terrific job at Cherryville High School. He has excelled at multiple sports and in the classroom. He will be greatly missed!

These students from Coach Tim Pruitt’s fourth period class walked and/or ran many yards in CHS gym recently for the “Yards for Yeardley” program the coach has every year.

CAUSE From Page 1 way of reminder, “…a national movement to bring awareness to victims of domestic violence as Yardley Love, who was a female Lacrosse player at the University of Virginia, died as a result of domestic violence.” Pruitt said his classes do this twice a year, or once a semester. He continued, “After her death, her friends and family began a foundation that provides information to college and high school students around the United States.” Coach Pruitt noted his Health and PE students are encouraged to participate in the ‘Yards for Yeardley’ movement as their way to respond “…to learning that over one in three females and nearly one in three males” will be victims of domestic violence in their lifetime. Continued Pruitt, “Our

classes also received information on signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and how they can help someone who is being controlled in a negative manner.” The two classes in Coach Pruitt’s second and fourth periods covered almost 210,000 yards. Pruitt noted student Mia Quintanilla covered the most yards for the girls with 8,100 yards, while three others walked or ran over 5,550 yards as part of the event. They were Ciera Gibson, Ebelin Gomez and Riley Moss. “Aaron Williams covered the most yards for the boys, with 9,100 yards covered, while four others walked or ran over 7,000 yards. They were Tyler Blaylock, Anthony Childers, Garin Short and Bryson Sigmon,” said Coach Pruitt. Pruitt said he wanted to also take this time to thank all of his students for their attention to this serious

matter and their effort and energy in completing Yards for Yeardley. For more information on this serious issue, Pruitt said to visit their website at joinonelove.org.
