Sunny skies make for a perfect June 4, 2022 CHS Graduation 108 students receive diplomas on a beautiful Saturday morning by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info One hundred, eight CHS seniors gladly received their diplomas under a Carolina blue sky at venerable Rudisill Stadium last Saturday, June 4. Two days prior, on Thursday, June 2, two seniors – Logan R. Hendrick and Stephen A. “Trip” Creason – received their diplomas in a special Baseball Graduation ceremony held at Fraley Field. The reason? The two youngsters are on the 2022 CHS Ironmen baseball team which was scheduled to play the Perquimans Pirates in the NCHSAA State 1A baseball championship, best two of three series in Holly Springs, NC, over the weekend. ABC Board gives $30,000 to City at Council work session Items discussed will be voted on in the city’s July 11 regular session by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info At last Tuesday’s Cherryville City Council work session, Cherryville ABC Board President James R. Beam, Jr., presented the city with a $30,000 check. The check, Mr. Beam noted, was a result of the distribution of profits the business made for the fiscal year 2021-2022. Additionally, Beam noted they also gave $6,000 to the Cherryville Police Department as well. Store manager Allen Fraley as well as Mr. Beam, noted the store could give possibly an additional $10,000 after their audit. Mr. Fraley said that to the best of his knowledge the $41,000 given in FY 2020-2021 was the most the Cherryville ABC Board has ever given the city in a

single year, adding “…and I feel sure after the audit will we surpass that for FY 2021-2022.” He noted that if they are able, after this audit, to give the additional $10,000, it will be a total of $46,000 given to the city for FY 2021-2022. To date and since Sept. 14, 1982, Mr. Fraley said, via an email, the store has given, in distribution of profits to the city and the police department, a total of $1,174,286.36. With the estimated total revenue ($620,000) from beer and wine sales since 1982 added in, Mr. Fraley noted the ABC store has given a total revenue of all sales since 1982 as being $1,794,286.36. 2022 CHS Baccalaureate The 2022 CHS Baccalaureate service, sponsored by the Cherryville Area Ministerial Association, was held at Cherryville’s First Baptist Church on Sunday, May 22, at 7 p.m. The seniors in attendance were welcomed by Association President the Rev. Dale Hendricks, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church and the message was given by Rev. Keith Huss, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Cherryville.

CHS’ Spencer signs to run track for CCC Yetis by MICHAEL E. Claude S. Dixon, Jr. CHERRYVILLE – Mr. Claude Solomon Dixon, Jr. passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Cleveland County Hospice in Shelby, NC. He was born on June 13, 1928, in Cherryville, NC, to the late Claude S. Dixon, Sr. and Mamie Louise Byers Dixon. Claude, or “Papa” as he was so affectionately called by many, was a graduate of John Chavis High School in Cherryville, NC. He served in the United States Army, receiving the Occupational Medal (Germany) and an honorable discharge in 1952. His life’s career was working for The Cherryville Eagle, the hometown newspaper that he had sold on street corners as a boy and grew up to work there for many years as a Print Editor, even continuing after the newspaper was obtained by The Republic Newspaper Company. He retired from The Eagle after over 50-plus years of employment. He was well-known in the community, due to his work on the newspaper, but mostly because of his gentle demeanor and willingness to help however he could. His stellar work ethic was honored when he was inducted into the Cherryville Hall of Fame. Claude was a lifelong member of Rudisill Chapel AME Zion Church in Cherryville, where he faithfully served as the Sunday School Superintendent and a Choir member. He is the recipient of North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, presented to him by Governor James G. Martin. He loved reading the newspaper, sporting a dapper hat or cap with khakis and a collar shirt, keeping his car impeccably clean, and spending time with his family and friends. He spent his last years at Somerset Court of Cherryville, where he was everyone’s “Papa”. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his longtime devoted partner, Ms. Hattie Davis Roberts; one sister, Virginia Delores Dixon Twitty (Joseph); his niece, Angela Twitty Richardson; and his brother-in-law, Nelson Braxton. Claude leaves to cherish precious memories: one daughter, Claudia Stowe (Christopher) and granddaughter, Calli Lauren Stowe of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Johnnie Louise Dixon Braxton, of Lynchburg, VA; nephew, Peter Richardson, greatniece, Allie Delores Richardson both of Lilburn, GA, great-nephew, and Peter Christian Richardson, II, of Daytona Beach, FL. He leaves behind a loved and adored adopted family consisting of a daughter, Zita Roberts of Durham, NC; two grandsons: Andre Roberts of Durham, NC, and Anthony Roberts (Amber) of Kings Mountain, NC; great-grandchildren: Remun Roberts (Ta’leea)

Troy Houser CHERRYVILLE – Troy Lee Houser, 75, of Cherryville, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at his residence. He was born April 17, 1947 in Cleveland County to the late Forrest Lee and Alene Lackey Houser. Troy was a family man and always stayed active and involved in what his children were doing. He coached with Optimist Football, was a Boy Scout Leader, and assisted with YMCA Indian Guides. He was also a member of North Brook Baptist Church and Cherryville Lion’s Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Doris “Coot” White and Betty Little; and brother-in-law, Terry Yount. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Bridges Houser; sons, David Houser and wife, Amy, and Todd Houser and wife, Noeme; grandsons, Austin Houser and Chris Hill; sister, Kathy Yount; brothersin-law, Cletus White and Steve Little; aunts and uncles, Alma McNeely, Matthew Dellinger, Clement Dellinger, and Emily Stephens; nieces and nephew, Traci Yount, Greg Yount, and Susan Fisher; greatnieces and great-nephews, Garrison Fisher, Madison Wright, Alec Yount, Colin Yount, and Sloane Yount. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 12 noon at Carpenter – Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Dr. Wade Dellinger officiating. Burial followed at City Memorial Cemetery. Carey Beth Krywy WILMINGTON – Carey Beth Krywy of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Monday was also her birthday; she was 44 years old. Carey Beth was the beloved daughter of Nan and the late Roger Davis of Cherryville, NC. She was born in Gastonia, NC, on May 30, 1978. Carey Beth was vivacious and charismatic. She had an endless capacity for kindness and her smile was warm and open. Carey Beth never met a stranger. She channeled her talents and joy for life into a successful sales career, where during one sales visit with a trainee in tow, she ‘closed’ both the sale and her future husband, John, on a first date. Carey Beth attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was bright and funny, a talented tennis player, and she had the heart and courage of a fighter. Carey Beth always pulled for the underdog and was quick to confront any injustice or to stand up for anyone who needed her. She poured every ounce of her warmth and energy into building a beautiful home with John and their three beloved dogs, Betsy, Juno and the late Lexi. Carey Beth is survived by her adoring husband, John Krywy of Wilmington, NC; their two fur children, Betsy and Juno; her mother, Nan Davis of Cherryville, NC; her sister, Katie Collins and Katie’s husband, Brad of Charlotte, NC; and her brother, Andy Davis of Aiken, SC. The family held a Celebration of Life Service for Carey Beth at Windermere Presbyterian Church, located at 104 Windermere Rd., in Wilmington, on Sunday, June 5, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made in Carey Beth’s name to Vintage Values, an organization in Wilmington that works to end domestic violence and provides emergency support services for survivors. Richard Eaker CHERRYVILLE – Mr. Walter Richard Eaker, 78, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022 at Atrium Health – Cleveland. Richard was born on April 13, 1944 in Gaston County, NC, son of the late Everette Earl Eaker and Evelyn Mae Yount Eaker. He was retired from Jenkins Metal Corporation in Gastonia. After retirement Richard worked for Lowe’s in Lincolnton and also at the Tryon Recycling Center in Bessemer City. Richard was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Bessemer City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Leatherman Eaker. Survivors include his son, Chris Eaker of Raleigh; a sister, Lynn Eaker Helms of Gastonia; a sister-in-law, Lynn Bennett and husband, Rocky of Cherryville; nieces and nephews; Kevin Bennett (Lutricia), Wesley Bennett (Kristen), Kyle Bennett; Kim Huffman (Dustin), Dana Stone (Jeff), and Kenny Helms (Carrie). Also surviving are a number of great-nieces and nephews. To honor Mr. Eaker’s request, services and burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Memorial Day 2022 Observance Cherryville’s American Legion Post 100 celebrated and remembered its veterans and their sacrifices on May 30, 2022, Memorial Day with small service and wreath laying inside the Legion Building on Pink Street. Commander Mike Robinson, Ladies Auxiliary Unit 100 President Lynette Christensen and Department President of the Auxiliary of North Carolina, Jill Parker-Puett, along with members Jean Skibo,

Rev. Dr. Billy Lowe, and Judy McSwain, spoke, prayed, or read a poem at the event in memory of our fallen veterans of the many wars the United States has fought. The Post 100 Color Guard fired a rifle salute and dual member (of Post 100 and Unit 100) Monica Lockwood and Sons of the American Legion member Danny Eaker placed the wreath inside the Legion building. Refreshments were served afterwards.

Hubers told the graduates that is has been his honor to serve as their principal. He told them that many of them will further their educations but reminded them of their tight bonds formed as Ironmen. “I just want to challenge you to make wise choices,” he said. Mrs. Lovelace congratulated the seniors on behalf of the Gaston County Schools’ Board of Education. Said Mrs. Lovelace, “Your families and your teachers and school staff have supported you and groomed you to get to where you are today. To you parents; thank you for the impact you’ve had on these students.” Lovelace equated their lives like being the chapters of a book; one which is still being written. “Now Part Two begins! You have been given the necessary tools to go on. Remember your fondest memories. I pray you will

reflect that each day is a gift and that you will remember that through God’s grace all things are possible!” she said. Salutatorian Rylee-Grace Burgis spoke, noting that teachers have been vital to them all and that the class has always “been very close” as students. Burgis’ best memory, she said, was from middle school playing flag football at recess, adding that when they all got to high school they were hit with what she termed “the COVID adversity”, noting that terrible time “only made us stronger.” In closing, she said, “Fellow classmates, I am proud of every one of you! I can’t wait to see what we do!” Valedictorian Jackson Owens spoke next, and like Ms. Burgis, he too thanked the CHS faculty and the families of the graduates. Looking to his left at his friends and Ironmen classmates, he said, “Fellow graduates; we made it! Today marks a significant chapter in our lives. Today we move ahead. Continue to strive for excellence. Let our class tell a story of a small town with a big heart. Remember to strive for excellence.” Guest speaker and CHS Class of 1995 member Leslie Schillings took the podium after being introduced by Skye Reed to address the

seniors. Schilling, an author and successful sports nutritionist, currently lives in Las Vegas, NV, and is working on a new book, “Feed Yourself”. She talked about how she got from CHS to where she is today, telling the 2022 seniors they too can do as she has. “It is an honor to be back,” she said. “What I have learned is that things are not always what they seem. You can live a life of adventure, why just look how far you have come!” She told them of how they spent their sophomore year in front of a computer rather than in an actual classroom; not in school but rather at home learning; and that knowing now the importance of relationships we must be true to ourselves. Class of 2022, may you be blessed!” She continued, “Nobody is like you. You are a blessing. Do not be afraid of who you are because being different is gift. The skills you have learned are only the beginning; be willing to expand your heart and your mind. Relationships taught me more. Guard your mind; you can be wrong, people are not always what they seem, so again, expand your mind. If you judge people, you don’t have time to know them. Be willing to unlearn and learn

Effective Communications As I was browsing the internet, I noticed that there are some interesting celebrations in the month of June. A few are… • National Accordion Awareness Month • National Adopt a Cat Month • National Country Cooking Month • National Give a Bunch of Balloons Month • Turkey Lovers Month Some topics were very serious such as Men’s Health Awareness, and some were fun like National Candy Month. One topic in particular caught my eye called “National Effective Communications Month”. It made me think about my Christian walk and how I was doing with my conversations and interactions with others. I know that all of us have been guilty of saying things that were unkind, but we must strive to be careful to use our words wisely. As Benjamin Franklin stated, “A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over.” Also, Proverbs 12:18 (GNT) says, “Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal.” It is very important to remember the magnitude of what we say to our family members, colleagues, and even strangers. “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.” “A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever.” - Anonymous I believe that National Effective Communications Month was established to remind us that we must foster positive communication skills. I thought how selfish of me to think only of my hurt, so I prayed, “How can my son, my daughter-in-law, his brother, his grandmothers, and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; how can they live with their wounded hearts? We are all hurting so!” That’s when Jesus spoke to me immediately answering my prayers! On May 9 my grandson took his own life. On May 10, driving south on I-85 to Montgomery, Alabama, I prayed, “Lord, how can I live with this? My heart has a gashing wound in it. How can I live?” And then

Cherryville’s American Legion Post 100 ball club played Burke County Post 21’s ball club at Fraley Field on Tuesday, May 31, defeating them by a score of 14-5. Head coach Bob Reynolds utilized two pitchers in this battle: Will Blackburn, and Ashton Pope. Blackburn got the win, striking out six batters and walking three. Pope came in and got two strikeouts. Blackburn helped himself at his turn at bats by going 1for 4, and getting walked. Pope also helped himself going 2 for 4; one a hit to the Fraley Field fence, and getting 3 RBIs. Other hitters for the Post 100 men were lead-off batter Landon Jenkins (3-5, a triple, and 3 RBIs); Zane Brockman (4-5, a double, scored on a wild pitch, and 3 RBIs); Cole Irby (1-5, a double, and an RBI); Jacob Hammrick (1-4, a double, and a walk); Taylor Cook (2-4, 2 hits, and a walk); and catcher Reid

Stroupe (2-4, a double, 2 hits, a walk, and an RBI). The Post 100 men got their 14 runs off of 16 hits to the detriment of the Burke Post 21. Since Legion play started in May, and according to Richard Walker’s CarolinasSportsHub.com web site, Post 100 is currently 4-0 in the Area IV Western Division, and 5-3 overall. In other Post 100 AL matchups, also listed on Mr. Walker’s web site, from the most recent to the oldest game listed for Post 100, on June 1, Cherryville defeated Rutherford County Post 423, 7-6. The day before, Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day), Post 100 was at Rowan, losing to Post 324 8-1). The Saturday, May 28 game between Caldwell Post 29 and Cherryville, played at Cherryville, was suspended to June 22 with Caldwell leading 4-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. On May 27, Post 100 was at Hickory Post 48, handing that team an 18-3 loss in five innings. The May 26 matchup between Rutherford Post 423, scheduled to be played at Cherryville’s Fraley Field was postponed, with no date

set for a game. On May 25, the Post 100 game at Henderson was also postponed until Tuesday, June 28, and the May 23 game pitting Cherryville at Gastonia was also postponed with makeup date set. May 22 saw Post 100’s baseball squad blank Cherryville at Burke 12-0 in five innings of play, while the day previous day, May 21, Post 23 of Gastonia played at Post 100’s home field with Post 100 taking that game by a score of 22-0 in five innings. On Tuesday, June 7, Post 100 was at Rock Hill, in South Carolina, taking on Post 34, and on Wednesday, June 8, they are in an Area IV matchup against Asheville Post 70, at Asheville (game starts at 7 p.m.). On Thursday, June 9, they play at Cleveland Co. Post 82 and 155; game time also starting at 7 p.m. The Cleveland Co. Classic starts June 10 and runs through June 12 with games at Fraley Field on Friday and Saturday, and games at Keeter Stadium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Pirates down Ironmen in NCHSAA 1A state championship CHS ties series 1-all in Game Two; can’t get needed runs in pivotal Game Three by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info The Ironmen, who were 8-4 in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A, finished their 2022 season 22-12 overall, losing two games in the best-of-three State 1A Championship series held last week at Holly Springs’ Ting Park. They played the defending 1A champions, the Perquimans Pirates. After taking the program’s 10th Regional Championship, it was their first appearance in a State Championship series since 2016, according to information received from the NCHSAA. While the CHS Ironmen managed to tie the series 1-all in Game Two; they couldn’t get the needed runs in a pivotal Game Three to tie the Pirates or get a one-run lead in the heart-breaking loss to the Perquimans ball club. Game One The first game played on June 3 saw a tough pitcher’s battle pitting UNC – Wilmington signee, lefty Tanner Thach of the Perquimans Pirates, against scrappy right-hander,

Brayden Reynolds. Reynolds struck out two, gave up one run, and allowed no walks. He was followed on the mound by senior Trip Creason, who walked one batter. The score was 0-1 in favor of the Pirates. The Ironmen’s only hit in this game was from Kanon Willis who got a base hit off of Thach. Will Heavner and Will Fowler walked. There were no runs for the Ironmen and only the one hit by Willis. The Ironmen left three men on base. Game Two The second game in this state championship series, played again at Ting Park on June 4, went much better for the CHS ball club as they won by a score of 6-1 over the Perquimans Pirates. The winning pitcher in this matchup was Kanon Willis, who only walked two batters. The Ironmen got their six runs off of 11 hits, committed no errors, and left nine men stranded on base. Hitters for the CHS men were Landon Hahn (3-4, a triple, and stole second); Collin Robinson (1-4, a double and an RBI); Will Fowler (1-4, scored on a wild pitch, a walk, and an RBI); Willis (2-4); Tobias Miller (2-3, in on a fielder’s choice, and an RBI); and

Colin Huss (2-3, 2 RBIs). Will Heavner was hit by a pitch and walked and Chase Miller was hit by a pitch and got on due to a fielder’s choice. Game Three In this decisive game, the Ironmen managed only three runs off of seven hits and left eight men on base after it was all over. Coach Heavner used four pitchers in this battle, starting things off with Chase Miller, who struck out one Pirates batter. He was followed by senior right-hander, Trip Creason who was on the mound for one inning. Creason was followed by shortstop Landon Hahn who took over mound duties, striking out one batter and walking one. Eli Newsome came in and struck out one batter. Willis, meanwhile, had gotten an infield single, while batter Chase Miller walked. Pirates coach took out Tanner Thach who was near his maximum in the pitch count; brought in his starter, Jakob Meads. Meads got Ironman Tobias Miller to fly out to center thus ending the game. Mom, Chassity said, “we are very proud of her, and this was unexpected.” Dad, Shannon agreed, adding, “We’re still in kind of a state of disbelief, but we are very happy for her!” Yetis coach McCachren said he saw Callista run at a couple of CHS’ meets and was suitably impressed and

wanted to offer her a chance to run at a college level. “Coach (Justin) Willyoung recommended her, plus I could tell she had talent,” he said. Coach Gilmore, who has been at CHS for the past five years; two of which have been as the ladies’ track coach, said, “I think this is awesome! She’s going to do great things there (at CCC). She’s good at track and sprinting, and will do well.” Coach McCachren said the Yetis will use Callista’s speed and talents in the 200 and 400-meter races and such as well as in cross-country running.

Valedictorian Jackson Lee Owens is the son of Jason and Cathy Owens and will be attending Lenoir-Rhyne University, majoring in Pre-med, and will also be participating in Track and Field. Jackson plans a career as a pediatrician. His honors and awards are as follows: Chief Junior Marshal; National Honor Society; a Dwight H. How to Get Underutilized COVID Funeral Assistance Funds Dear Savvy Senior, I recently saw a news segment on TV about a government funeral assistance program available to families who lost loved ones during the pandemic. What can you tell me about this? I lost my 78-year-old mother to COVID in 2021 and want to ﬁnd out if I’m still eligible for any funeral funds, and if so, what I need to do to get them. Still Sad Dear Sad, I’m very sorry about the loss of your mother. The government program you are asking about is the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (or FEMA). This program is part of the American Rescue Plan, a stimulus package passed in 2021 in an effort to help the country ﬁnancially manage amid the pandemic. This program, which has no end date, offers up to $9,000 to cover the cost of a funeral for someone who died of COVID-19 as far back as January 2020.

Unfortunately, less than half the people believed eligible for funeral assistance have actually applied for it. Here’s what you should know about the program’s requirements and how to apply. Where to Start? To apply for COVID-19 funeral assistance, you must do it over the phone by calling FEMA at 844-6846333, anytime Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The application process takes about 20 minutes. After you apply, FEMA will provide you an application number, which you may use to create an online account at DisasterAssistance.gov if you choose. You will then need to submit supporting documents, including a death certiﬁcate for your mother, but it must state that her death “may have been caused by” or “was likely the result of” COVID-19 or COVID-19like symptoms. Her death must also have occurred in the U.S. on or after Jan. 20, 2020.

If you don’t have this, you won’t be eligible. You’ll also need to submit proof of funeral expenses, such as itemized receipts, invoices or funeral home contracts. These supporting documents can be submitted either online (through your DisasterAssistance.gov account), by mail (P.O. Box 10001, Hyattsville, MD 20782) or via fax (855-261-3452). After the paperwork is received, it takes FEMA about 45 days to make an eligibility decision. Families who had multiple deaths due to the coronavirus can also apply. One family can receive up to $35,000 across multiple funerals. Reimbursements can be used to cover any portion of funeral expenses including burial plots, caskets, preparation of the body, cremation, urns, clergy, services and headstones as well as costs related to state or local ordinances and producing death cer-

tiﬁcates. But be aware that pre-paid funerals are not eligible for reimbursements. Any payment made speciﬁcally for a funeral prior to death is considered a duplication and is not eligible. If FEMA approves your application, the funds will either be deposited into your bank account or sent by mail via check, usually within a few days of approval. If, however, you receive a letter from FEMA saying you’re ineligible, or if the amount awarded is not enough, you have the right to appeal within 60 days of FEMA’s decision letter.
