GASTONIA – In a media release from the Gaston County Schools’ communication office, it is noted that Gaston County Schools had 22 students in the Class of 2021 who achieved the top See SENIORS, Page 2

The Cherryville High School Class of 2021 – all 120 of them – received their diplomas last Friday, May 28, in front of a large crowd of family, friends and well-wishers at Rudisill Stadium. Many there were just happy to be outside and to be there witnessing an event they didn’t think they were going to see since the COVID-19 pandemic had changed the

way things normally worked for America and the world a year or so ago. One person, walking in the stands and looking for a seat, looked up at the gathered crowd in the Rudisill stands, and said, “We’re back, baby!” There were some there though who still opted for wearing masks, and so far as the school officials were concerned, that was okay too. All that mattered was that the crowd was fairly quiet and reserved as graduation crowds go, and it was plainly evident

that the day was for the kids; the students who were on the field, socially distanced in their chairs, resplendent in their royal blur caps and gowns, eagerly awaiting the time they could stand, switch their tassels over and toss their mortarboards high in the air, signifying their rite of passage from young high school students to young adults, stepping out into the world bound for college and higher education or looking for a job, moving forward into that phase of life.

On the dais were CHS Principal Kevin Doran and Assistant Principal Jada Warnock, along with the 2021 CHS Valedictorian, Chase McNeill, and Salutatorian, Noah Abernethy. In a recent media release from Gaston County Schools’ Chief Communications Officer Todd Hagans, the Gaston County system announced its plans to make some changes to not only many of its schools but specifically to two Cherryville schools; namely Cherryville Elementary and Cherryville High. In his release, Mr. Hagans noted that, “During the Board of Education meeting (this past) Monday evening, the following administrative appointments and transfers were approved for the 2021-2022 academic year.” He went on to list all of the appointments and transfers, notably the three having the most impact on Cherryville students in the coming scholastic year. Long-time CHS Principal, Mr. Kevin Doran was transferred to serve as Principal of Cramerton Middle School; Mrs. Audrey Hovis was transferred to serve as Principal of Cherryville Elementary School. Hagans said she was most recently the Principal

at Holbrook Middle School; and lastly, Mr. Shawn Hubers was transferred to serve as principal of Cherryville High School, having been formerly the Principal at Cherryville Elementary School. Doran said he was going to miss the CHS Ironmen student body and staff and teachers, but has fond memories of his years at CHS, as the head Ironman. Said Doran, “I just want to say ‘thank you’ to the Cherryville community. After seven years, my hope is that I leave this school in a better place as it has certainly left me a better man. I have learned so much from this community. “From the Cherryville High School Education Foundation to the fans of

our athletics, the support of the Ironmen is like no other. Cherryville will always have a special place in my heart. Working here is, and will always be, the highlight of my career.” Of his replacement, Doran said, “I leave our high school in the capable hands of Mr. Shawn Hubers. He is exactly who I would want to follow me. You will find him to be an excellent principal and the kind of leader CHS needs. I look forward to hearing about the great things they accomplish together.” Hubers, who leaves Cherryville Elementary after many years there, said, “I am honored to be the next Principal at Cherryville High School. I have been so blessed to serve as Cherryville Elemen-

tary principal for the past eight years – two as assistant principal – as Cherryville Elementary is such a special place. “The students, staff, and parents have supported me and have helped our school continue to grow and thrive. I am excited to continue to serve the Cherryville community as the principal at the high school. Wendy Meadows SHALLOTTE, NC – Wendy Delane Heavner Meadows, 54, of Shallotte, formerly of Cherryville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, May 27, 2021. She was born Oct. 14, 1966 at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL, to Freddie Heavner and the late Charlotte Beam Heavner. Wendy graduated from Cherryville High School and attended Gaston Community College. Wendy worked at Cleveland Regional Medical Center for over 20 years where she was a hard worker that was loved by all. Wendy’s sense of humor, smile, and kind heart will be cherished by all those who knew her. Wendy is survived by her father, Freddie Heavner, of Cherryville; daughter, Lyndsey Richard and husband, David, of Vale; son, Caleb Roberts, of Cherryville; sister, Stephanie Hamrick, of Shelby; brother-inlaw, Wray Hamrick, of Shelby; nephew, Cole Hamrick; and fur baby, Lucy. GRADUATES From Page 1 Assistant Principal Connie Greene; Gaston County Board of Education representative for Cherryville, Beverly Lovelace; Gaston County Schools’ Dr. Melissa Balknight; guest speaker Chris Harris (CHS Class of 2004); and 2021 CHS Senior Class President, Ford Golden. Chief Marshal Jackson Owens led the graduates in the singing of the CHS Alma Mater. Leading the class in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem was Ben Hayes, and Lindsey Lingerfelt introduced the platform guests. Ms. Jada Warnock introduced the Valedictorian and the Salutatorian when it came their time to address the class. Principal Doran noted the Class of 2021 had brought in $2.5 million in scholarships, then he addressed the

group, saying, “You are an outstanding group. You have represented our school well. You have excelled in the classroom and outside of it. I am proud to call you graduates of Cherryville High School.” He continued, “Work hard and make a difference in the world, and remember, you are Ironmen!” Mrs. Lovelace, herself a former CHS teacher, said to the graduates their life was like a book they were writing every day, adding that this stage of it was their ‘part two’. “So, on behalf of the Board of Education,” she said, “Remember, part two of your life’s journey starts tonight. Make friends, not enemies. Remember your fondest memories. I pray that part two of your book will be a gift. Go with God! All things are possible. May your part two be a best seller!” Salutatorian Noah Abernethy spoke next, saying, “I would like to you for these

last four years.” Noah recounted, sometimes humorously, that middle school was a “turning point” for him in that the “loss of recess” was a pivotal moment in his life, and adding he is thankful he is “…no longer shorter than the girls.” The graduation, he noted, was their “final chapter” at CHS. Abernethy said was “excited” about his classmates’ futures, adding, “I want to thank the faculty (at CHS), my family, and my Lord and Savior!” Valedictorian Chase McNeill spoke next, noting, “We come to celebrate our past, present, and future; the closing of one chapter and the opening of another. We are starting our adult lives, and the future is bright. We cannot let our fear of failure stop us.” Quoting President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous line, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” McNeill continued, “Standing up for what we believe in is better

than falling. This future is ours to make. Life is not a 100-meter dash, rather it is a marathon. I hope we will make all our dreams come true. This class is ready for the future.” Guest speaker and member of the CHS Class of 2004, Chris Harris was introduced by Adelyn Seate. He then took the podium, greeting the graduates, then looking out at them, and to their families, he said, “Thank you. It is an honor to be here. You made it! Supplies are limited; if you miss this week’s kit, be sure to swing by next week for Fantasy Creatures – dragons, mermaids, unicorns, and more! There are also kits available for teens and adults. We have Create Your Own Magnetic Poetry kits for the teens (while supplies last), and yes, these are the same ones that were available during April’s Poetry Month celebration. Other teen kits will be available throughout the summer; if you have suggestions, call the library and ask to speak with Ms. Emily. We will also have a limited supply of a soothing craft kit created by Ms. Cande for adults. N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper announced Friday, May 14, that most restrictions put in place to control the spread of COVID-19 were lifted immediately. The decision allows indoor and outdoor facilities to be at full capacity. The local planning committee for The American Legion World Series (ALWS) breathed a collective sigh of relief. The decision allows for the sale of all seats in the 5,500-seat Keeter Stadium, home of the annual tournament played each August. “We had not printed any tickets for the 2021 series because we did not know how many seats we would be able to sell,” says Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “Now we can let our reserved seat, box seat and rocking chair seat holders know that

they will ALL have a place to watch the games. We are especially pleased because we are celebrating the 10th year of having the ALWS played in Shelby-Cleveland County.” The ALWS games are scheduled for Thursday – Tuesday, Aug. 12-17, with the first game at 10 AM Aug. 12. Ticket sales have grown substantially since Shelby became the official home of the tournament in 2011. In 2018, ticket sales reached 128,157 – a record – and fell only minimally to 127,798 in 2019. With special recognitions planned for the 10th anniversary, organizers hope to set another ticket sales record. Gov. Cooper said in part that mandatory capacity,

gathering limits and physical distancing requirements had been lifted. Masks will be mandatory only on public transportation, in childcare, in schools, in prisons and in certain public health settings. Anyone who purchased any type of reserved seat for the 2019 ALWS will receive a letter offering the same seats for 2021. After those wanting to renew have paid for their tickets, the remaining reserved seats will go to persons on a waiting list maintained by the ALWS staff. General Admission tickets are available for purchase, also, with the price of $35 for all 15 games; these tickets go on sale June 21. Of baseball, Ty “The Georgia Peach” Cobb, and God’s great love I’ve always loved baseball. I was not a very good player. I would say I was a “below average” kind of player. But I’ve always loved the game. Maybe that influence was due to a “living legend of baseball” residing about an hour away from my home. Ty Cobb, “The Georgia Peach,” made his home in Royston, Georgia, and he was our area’s “big deal” of baseball. And no wonder; take a look as his record: 3,033 games played; 13 batting records, which include a .367 lifetime batting average, 4,191 base hits, 5,863 most bases, 3,052 most singles, 23 years of batting

He is remembered as a rough and rugged player, but during his later years he mellowed and found much pleasure in doing for others. He built Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston for the people of North Georgia. But, that’s not what I want to tell you about. Several years ago, I came across this story of “The Last Days of Ty Cobb (1886-1961) as written by Dr. John R. Richardson, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia. “About two months before his death Cobb became a patient at Atlanta’s

Emory University Hospital. He was afflicted with cancer of the bone as well as several other ailments. During Cobb’s stay in the Hospital, Charles W. Outlaw suggested that we visit Ty in regard to the welfare of his soul. On our first visit, Ty said he had just been given sedation and would like for us to come back the next day when his mind was clearer. We read to him a passage of Scripture and offered a prayer. He was deeply appreciative and insisted we return at our earliest convenience. “Two days later we went for our second visit. It was obvious that the Holy Spirit had been working in his heart. We explained to him God’s plan of salvation. He listened with per-

fect attention. As we told him how Christ came to save sinners and of His incomparable love for us, he was touched. Then we gave him the New Testament meaning of saving faith, and spoke of the necessity of repentance. To these he responded earnestly. He said he wanted to put his complete trust in Christ to save him, and it was evident that he was sincere in this. “On subsequent occasions Ty was ready to tell us how comforting it was to rely on Christ. He loved to talk about how much Christ meant to him during his suffering and as he faced the future. The last visit was two days before his death. At this time, he said, ‘I feel the strong arms

of God underneath me. It is wonderful to be able to pray. I want you to tell others that they should not wait until a crisis comes to learn how to pray.’” Through the amazing grace of God, Ty Cobb died peacefully in the Christian faith. I believe if he could speak to us today, I am sure it would be to urge and encourage us to put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Savior early in our lives. The Holy Scriptures assure us, “Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) And, that’s what I want to tell you about.

Ironmen baseball team 12-0 overall; 10-0 in SPC 1A play by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info With two more games remaining in their 2021 regular season schedule, Coach Scott Heavner’s CHS Ironmen “diamond kings” are 12-0 overall and 10-0 in SPC 1A play. The following is a roundup of the past three games the CHS men have played. Against Christ the King The Ironmen traveled on Tuesday, May 25, to play the Crusaders of Christ the King High School. The Ironmen won 5-3 in this matchup, with “lefty” Dalton Pence getting his fourth win for the season. Kanon Willis got the save; his second of the season. The boys were up 5-1 over the Crusaders in the bottom

of the seventh inning and the CTK men battled back to pick up two more runs. However, it was a case of too little; too late for them as the Ironmen held on to their lead and moved ahead 7-0 in the SPC 1A standings. Hitters for the Ironmen were Ty Heavner, who got two (2) hits; Willis, Pence, Collin Robinson, and Will Heavner got a hit a piece to help the team going forward. Against Highland Tech The CHS men were home at Fraley Field on Thursday, May 27, against the Highland Tech Rams. The Rams were a tough club and stuck it out through the seventh inning, but in the end it was CHS’ win, 9-0. Landon Hahn was Coach Heavner’s starter in

this one and he struck out three and walked one batter. Tripp Creason came in the fourth inning, striking out four Rams batters and walking none. Hitters for the Ironmen were Dalton Pence (3-4, a double, 2 RBIs, scored on a wild pitch, and walked); Landon Hahn (2-4, 1 RBI, walked); Ty Heavener (1-2, 1 RBI); Tobias Miller (12); Will Fowler (3-4, a double, 2 RBIs, walked twice); Kanon Willis (1-2, a double); and Ben Huffstetler (1-3, in on a wild pitch, hit by a pitch/walked, and one hit). Their last face-off with the Gryphons resulted in a 5-2 away game win on Friday, May 7. Starting pitcher Dalton Pence struck out five batters until he was sidelined by an injury in the second inning. Logan Hendricks got the win on the mound for the Ironmen, making it the 12th win for the CHS team overall, and their 10th SPC 1A win. The remaining two games for the Ironmen are home games and they are (inclement weather not withstanding): Tuesday, June 8, at home against Lincoln Charter, and Friday, June 11, at home against BCHS’ Yellow Jackets. Payton Boone one of eight who won Albert G. Myers scholarships by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info Eight Gaston County seniors were recipients of the prestigious Albert G. Myers scholarship, and for Bessemer City High School senior, Payton Boone, the win was an exciting one. Boone is the daughter of BCHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Larry Boone. Her mother, Kristin Boone, has been the BCHS Data Manager for over 20 years. Both her mom and dad have worked in the education field now for 20-plus years, noted BCHS Principal Dr. Sheila S. Wyont. Payton, ranked fourth in the class with a GPA of 4.2286, is called by Dr. Wyont “a true hometown BCHS girl”. Payton also won 2021 Homecoming Queen and will be attending Gardner – Webb in the fall to major in elementary education, Wyont added. To say Larry and Kristin are proud of their daughter is an understatement. Said Larry, “It has been a privilege to be able to see Payton grow daily into the mature, self-confident young lady she is. She amazes me how she has handled both her parents working at her school, and for a young lady, whose dad is in the hallway, it can’t be easy, but she has never shied away from telling me she loves me no matter how crowded the hallway is.” Mom Kristin said, “Sometimes you’re lucky enough to know people that challenge you daily and set examples of who you should be. I’m just blessed to say that she’s my daughter, and I just love that kid, she’s honestly what this world needs. The upcoming years are going to be tough, it’s been ‘bring your kid to work’ day for the past four years; it’s going to take some getting used to. She’s had a great support system here, they’ve known her

Myers and other scholarships. since she was born, she loves them and they love her.” In addition to the Myers scholarship, Payton has done volunteer work with the Boys and Girls Club as an after-school tutor; Art with April and Aubrey, which assists autistic students to be able to express themselves artistically; worked with the Dallas Police Department’s ‘Shop with a Cop’ program; Relay for Life; and has donated winter items to the Salvation Army for the needy. Additionally, Payton has been a part of the Upward Bound Program at Gaston College since the 9th grade, spent over 370 hours in the program working on academics, tutoring, doing community service, touring colleges and receiving certifications in numerous areas. Her mom noted Payton has spent every summer attending a six-week program geared toward academic preparation. “She has enrolled in the CTE Early Childhood Education Program, where she fought and had the program saved for the senior class to complete. In this program, she served as an intern at Bessemer City Primary in a first-grade class where she discovered her love for teaching,” said Kristin. Payton was offered over $345,000 in total scholarships and grants. Her accepted

The four-year art student was also an NC State Parks Scholar nominee; a Gardner Webb Finalist for the Tucker Scholarship and Ignite Scholarship; and a UNC – Charlotte Levine’s Scholar nominee. Payton was also named as Gaston County Schools CTE Presidential Scholar nominee; named as the ‘Loveable Leader’ by the teachers at BCHS; named “Best All Around Senior” by the teachers and staff at BCHS; named Most School Spirited by the senior class; received Honorable Mention at the Gaston County Art Show; was a Student of the Month; and received numerous academic awards.

Cherryville Traditional New Year Shooters Inc. give two scholarships The Cherryville Traditional New Year Shooters have selected the winners for their 2021 Scholarship Award winners. From Cherryville High School, the winner is Ashlyn Beattie. Ashlyn has been a member of the Traditional New Year Shooters for four (4) years. She is a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Ashlyn was in Chorus, Drama, Interact, and the Pep Club while at CHS, and was on the 2021 Homecoming Court. Ashlyn discovered her passion for the emergency medical field while in high school. She was a Lincoln EMS explorer, a Gaston EMS pre-apprentice, and a CaroMont Main Hospital Explorer, as well as taking EMT and Nursing Fundamentals classes at CHS. She graduated 16th in her class with a GPA of 4.3. Ashlyn plans to pursue a career in emergency medical care and would like to become a flight nurse one day. She will be attending nursing school in the fall with a dual enrollment at Gaston College and Lenoir – Rhyne University, where she plans to receive a bachelor’s degree and then become a licensed paramedic.
