Large crowds come out for music; fireworks at City’s Independence Day celebration by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Friday, July 2, Cherryville Independence Day celebration wasn’t a casualty of the weather after all as the projected rain and storms predicted blew through the area earlier then moved off to the east. In short, the town had great weather and was able to not only welcome the large crowds which seem to populate the city every year during the Fourth of July festival, with the exception of 2020, which was a COVID -19 curtailed year, but, once again, was able to have a great celebration, culminating in their always astounding fireworks show. Though the crowd was

estimated to be a tad smaller than what the city is normally is used to during these festivals; still folks came from far and wide (one lady from Florida was there and was also celebrating her birthday as well) to hear the band, “Too Much Sylvia”, and to watch the stellar fireworks display put on by Fire Chief Jeff Cash and his hardy crew of firefighters. The city also had the Cherryville Police Department and a few members of the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office there to help make sure things were orderly. GEMS units were on hand as well to make sure no one got hurt, and that they had quick access to care if something happened. This year, and despite leftover coronavirus restrictions, a number of food ven-

dors plied their tasty wares via stalls and food trucks as folks lined up, masks on and socially distanced. The kiddies had their fun as bouncy houses and sellers of various trinkets and fun things got their attention, as well as mom and dad’s money! The overall, general feeling and attitude was one of intense joy and gratitude by all that they were able to get out and just have fun, shagging to some great beach music, eat some great food, get reacquainted with old friends, and just generally have a good time, before the coronavirus shut things down for a year. The guys with the band noted they were glad to back in Cherryville again and See CELEBRATION, Page 4

Council’s June 29 Old savings and loan/law office building work session short taken down in second controlled burn but loaded with important issues by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Tuesday night, June 29, City work session was a short one but important issues were brought up that will be discussed in detail and voted on at the City’s July 12 regular Council session. The Council discussed and voted on a proposed sidewalk café ordinance brought up by Planning and Zoning Director Derrick Mackey. Discussed were Sections 3-36; 3-37;

3-38; and 3-39 of Article II – Consumption and Possession of Alcohol Beverages of the City P&Z’s Code Enforcement Office dealing with defining what a sidewalk café is, what a permit is and will do, how to apply for one, and the operation of said sidewalk café. The last part of the ordinance’s sections simply note that “Alcoholic Beverages may be served in approved sidewalk cafes provided the following requirements are met”, with a list of seven (7) points that must be followed See COUNCIL, Page 3

The Cherryville Fire Department conducted their second controlled burn to clear land on the corner of North Cherry and East Church Streets on Saturday, June 26. This time it was the building originally known as the Southeastern Savings and Loan, and later, as the Black Law Office Building. Chief Jeff Cash said the fire crews started around 7 a.m., adding, “We wrapped it up around 3 p.m. There wasn’t as much wind that day and the weather cooperated with us. Everything went well. There were no problems See BURN, Page 4

COUNCIL

Finance Director Dixie wall then spoke to Council about proposed budget amendments concerning the Capital Project Budget Ordinance for the downtown water and sewer bonds. The original cost of the general obligation bonds was to have been $8.7 million but was amended to $9.5-plus million. The amendment was adopted on June 29, 2021. Another amendment was to the Budget Ordinance of the City of Cherryville, originally adopted on June 8 of this year. That was amended and also became effective on June 29 as well.

Council also discussed the topic of hiring a fulltime mechanic and had requested City Manager Jeff Cash and staff to research how much that would cost the City. Mr. Cash did so, touching base with fellow City Managers from five sister cities, noting that most of these cities “… continue to send out some work due to specialized pieces of equipment and not having the specialized

diagnostic equipment. In all cases…mechanical staff does not have expertise with specialized equipment and technology.” With other extenuating factors and information in play regarding the hiring of a full-time mechanic, not to mention, Mr. Cash noted, the total cost to the City of doing so – estimated to be roughly $66,403.22 – he made the following recommendation to Council at

the work session, “…if you want a full-time mechanic position that it be awarded to (the current part-time mechanic, Mr. Don Helms (who would be hired, as per City policy, from within) by policy. An alternative would be to leave our current staffing in place. If funded, funds would have to come from multiple departments, including fund balance.”

The fireworks this year, as they have always been in the past, were spectacular as they exploded over the large crowds gathered last Friday night, July 2, to see them.

CELEBRATION From Page 1 sing for some great people while the crowd responded with loud cheers and much clapping as “Too Much Sylvia” moved through their musical repertoire. Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III, who introduced the band, said he and the city were happy and excited to see the crowds come once again to the festival in the little town, “…where life blossoms!”

Mayor Beam also noted the many sponsors of the stage and the festival, thanking each and every one for their gracious and generous support. Mayor Beam said later he was elated to see so many come out, especially after the past year we have all had. “It’s great! Just great to see all of these people come out here once again to help us celebrate the country’s 245th birthday!” he noted. The fireworks started

a little after 10 p.m., and were, by all the comments, “oohs” and “aahhs”, from young and old alike, a smashing success. Retired firefighter Barry Heavner got to do something he hasn’t been able to do in many years, he said, since he was always helping set up the fireworks and make sure they all went off properly and that no one was hurt. “I got to watch these from this side of things instead of being right under them, and let me tell you, it

hope, and what amazes me about these six verses, is how much theology Paul is able to pack into only two sentences. Every word is of value. So often in life we use our words carelessly, we throw them away, but here in Romans, chapter 5, you can feel that Paul put extraordinary weight on each word. You can almost feel the tip of the pen rip into the paper as he inscribes each thought. Of course, when you come to a subject as precarious as hope, perhaps more weight should be put on each word. Hope is a fickle thing; it can be alive and so vibrant in our lives at one moment, and completely dashed the next. Hope can make you feel like you are on top of the world, but when your hope is ripped away, you might find yourself with nowhere left to

turn. Paul needs to spend some time thinking through what he is going to say about hope. He is writing to a community in distress, church life is falling apart while he is in jail, and there isn’t a thing he can do about it. So, he writes this letter to the Romans, a large and weighty letter, but buried in this letter, are his thoughts on hope. Notice how Paul gets to hope, he doesn’t just start with it, make no mistake hope isn’t simply something that is given, hope is earned. Paul says that hope is derived from suffering, endurance, and character. I will admit, I wish Paul would have just said, “Don’t be so down. You know you always have hope.” Because at least then hope remains a bit abstracted from us. The word isn’t defined,

and when a word isn’t defined you can slap it on any old thing you want. But when a word is defined, once we know where we get our hope, all those other flimsy definitions just don’t seem to do the trick. Paul says it is a costly hope that we have, a hope that cannot be attained without sufferings, without endurance in those sufferings, without a character that has been shaped and formed by the pain and dejection that we will all know in some form or another throughout life. Paul says, once you have moved through these then – and only then – will you know hope. Oh, a friend’s hope can be such a fickle thing, at times it is tough to find. You might be tempted to settle for the cheap hope that our world offers, but that is the kind of hope that

comes quickly and leaves easily. There is nothing real about it, and after it is gone, you are left feeling worse than you were before. No, my friends, we have hope; a real deep, abiding hope through Jesus Christ. But the hard truth is, we cannot know this hope, we cannot receive this gift without knowing suffering, without knowing what it is like to endure, without having our character built up through this present life. Even though life seems hard and overwhelming, and while the bright spots may be hard to identify, I want you to claim your hope, a hope that has been endowed to you through the Holy Spirit. A hope that will always lead you through the rough patches, because our hope does not come from within, our hope is found in God!

Cherryville’s Family “Y” relocating to Mountain Street New space readies to support needs of Cherryville community by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Sharon Padgett, CEO of Gaston County YMCA, noted in a recent media release the Cherryville family YMCA is moving to new “digs” – literally right around the corner and down a block from their old spot on Main Street. Yes, it’s true. Padgett added, “This summer, the Y is relocating to a newly renovated facility on Mountain Street, just a half of a mile away from the current location.” A Cherryville mainstay since 2003, the much-loved

Cherryville Family YMCA has served, noted Padgett, “…as a safe and healthy environment for seniors, adults and children,” and she added that the new YMCA is ready, willing, and able “…to reinvigorate the community – spirit, mind and body!” Padgett continued, “We will surely miss Main Street! We believe the new location will allow continued growth and the potential to expand our services to the Cherryville community.” The YMCA will take over the former Tropical Tanning Center location which is currently under renovation. “The progress is amazing. They have taken everything back to the studs and are rebuilding the interior from the floor up,” said Padgett. “This new facility is a blessing to See YMCA, Page 10

Little League 11/12 All-Stars win District 1 Championship by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

It’s nice to come back from the pandemic’s shutdown and have a bit of great news, and for Cherryville as a “baseball town”, one of the more recent bits concerns the Cherryville Little League. The Cherryville 11/12 All-Stars recently defeated Rutherfordton 6-5, in Game 1 of the Little League AllStars championship, and the turned around and defeated Boiling Springs 9-5, in Game 2, of the playoffs. They then defeated Boiling Springs 10-4 in the Championship game, making Cherryville’s Little League

All-Stars (11/12) 3-0 in the tournament! Because of that, they will be in Myers Park in Charlotte, N.C., for state tournament, which starts July 10. Head coach Tyler Sain said of his Little League diamond kings, “I was just proud of the kids! They played great all three days. “They were a little intimidated when they saw all of the other teams (last) Saturday evening, because we were the smallest team there. But the kids just battled. We were good in all three facets of the game each day: defensively, offensively, and on the bump. “The kids are excited about going to (the) state

Cherryville’s All-Stars managed to get up after a Landon Sain doubled, scoring Ryder Dellinger. This put the Cherryville team up 1-0. Post 100 ends regular season at 11-5 overall in Western Division Team was 10-4 in Division play, tied with Cleveland County Post 82 by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Post 100 avenged an earlier season loss to Burke County Post 21 by defeating that visiting team 3-1 last Wednesday, June 30, at Cherryville’s Fraley Field/ Memorial Stadium. Eight Post 100 men got hits in this one and the tworun lead they had was just enough to take the win. Lead-off batter and shortstop Zack Wilson went 1-4 and knocked a big triple for the Post 100 squad in the fifth inning. He was hit by a pitch earlier in the game and walked by Post 21 pitcher Chapel Matson. Third baseman Zane Brockman, who was also 1 for 4 at the plate, drove Wilson in for the score in

the fifth. Five Post 100 men went 1 for 3 at the plate, with left fielder Jacob Hamrick driving in Cole Irby for a score. Center fielder Will Heavner was 1-3, as was first baseman Joseph Webb. Right fielder Irby was hit by a pitch and got on base, moving around and lining up for the RBI by Hamrick, which came in the fourth inning. Second baseman Collin Robinson was 1 for 3 at-bats, getting a double in the sixth inning, the later scoring on a wild pitch by Matson. Ty Heavner, who was the designated hitter for Post 100 pitcher Noah Huss, who went the distance in the game, was walked in the fourth inning. Huss struck out five Burke County players and walked one in this matchup, getting the win. The Post 100 crew got their three runs off of seven hits, making two errors in the process, and leaving eight runners stranded on

base. The team received a “bye” for play next week, as they and Cleveland County shared the Western Division title with 10-4 divisional records. Mint Hill took the Eastern Division title with an 8-2 record. According to the website, CarolinasSportsHub. com, hosted by sports writer Richard Walker, Cherryville’s Post 100 (West-2) is slated to start the playoffs by playing Friday, July 9 at Fraley Field/Memorial Stadium against Lincoln (East 3). Game 2 in that series will be on Saturday, July 10, at Lincoln, with the two teams being back at Cherryville on Sunday, July 11, for Game Three of the series. If Games 4 and 5 are needed, they will be held Monday, July 12, at Lincoln, and Tuesday, July 13, at Cherryville, respectively.

Cherryville’s Post 100 first baseman Joseph Webb has the ball and his foot on the base getting Post 21 runner and second baseman, Wes Smith, out.

West Lincoln High’s Noah Huss (Class of 2022) handled the mound duties against Post 21, Burke County at the Wednesday, June 30 game; the final regular season game for the Post 100 team.

Post 100 pitcher Noah Huss looks on as first baseman Joseph Webb gets the throw and the out on Post 21 pitcher Chapel Matson.

Driving the Burke County runner back to first, Post 100’s Noah Huss and Joseph Webb team up to keep this Burke runner on his toes.

Post 21’s first baseman Michael Lewis has the ball and gets Post 100 hitter Jacob Hamrick out at the June 30 game last week at Fraley Field/Memorial Stadium.

The ball is in the dirt and almost out of Burke County Post 21 catcher Hunter Byerly’s mitt as Post 100 batter and shortstop Zack Wilson watches.

Veteran affiliation and I was eligible through him. I will be glad to tell anyone how to join and would welcome them as a member. I have asked those that I know who are eligible to join but some say they don’t have time right now, or they would like to think about it. “I think back to our Veterans that gave so much, they did not take time to think about it, they answered the call. The week of Thanksgiving 2019, my husband Ronnie, set up a trip for us to France so I could go to Bastogne, Belgium to see where my dad was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne and served with Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower on his Honor Guard. It was the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. “I got to go into the forest where this battle took place and it was awesome to see how the people of Belgium have protected this history. The staff at the hotel asked to hug me once more when we were leaving for Normandy and thanked me for coming. It meant so much to them to have the daughter of one of the GI’s that liberated their country come to visit them.” Mrs. Puett said she has shared this experience with our Legionnaires and tells anyone that she sees wearing a Veterans cap, “Thank you for your service!”, adding we all need to let them know how

much we appreciate them. Puett said each Department President has a President’s Project where money is raised to donate to our four (4) VA Medical Centers. This year her project will be Robotic Pets for Vets. Said Puett, “The Asheville VA is already putting them to use. Our Veterans with Memory Loss or severe PTSD in that facility have them and it helps to keep them calm. The pets move so slowly; they purr or growl, stretch and just like to be held. The medical staff says these robotic pets are a welcome addition to the special needs of these Veterans and very therapeutic. “I want to see the other three VA Medical Centers get them too. Our Unit 100 has given money to help purchase these for the Asheville VA.” She noted that if anyone would like to make a donation toward this Veteran Project, they can make their checks payable to: ALA Dept. of North Carolina, putting “Presidents Project” on their check and mailing them to her attention at: 2041 Eaker Dr., Cherryville, NC, 28021. “Also, if you would like to know how you can join and be part of the largest patriotic organization in the nation, you can call me at (704) 842-4804, or ask any one of our (American Legion Post 100 or Sons of the American Legion) members,” she said.

We’re also extending the deadline for registering, which is now set for 15 minutes before the time of the event. You might have noticed that many of the Gaston County Public Library branches have stopped requiring registration for all events, instead requiring it for just a few special programs. Why are we continuing to require it? Well, having patrons reg-

Great new craft – taking plain old music CDs and transforming them into beautiful drink coasters! (photos provided) ister for events helps us in many ways. It means we can ensure we have enough space (thinking back to a Dr. Seuss program where 79 showed up!) and that we have enough crafts, chairs, and supplies for participants. It gives us a chance to send fun reminders. Finally, if something should happen (looking at you, unpredictable summer storms) we are able to contact those that register about the need to alter/cancel events. We anticipate that we’ll be back to

programming in a more normal fashion after Labor Day. We sincerely appreciate the patience and support that our patrons have shown us as we continue to reinstate our library programs and services. You’re the best! Our last Adult Take-andMake was a huge hit, so we’re doing another one! Ms. Cande has created another wonderful craft using items we had here at the branch – CDs! As you can see from the photos, plain old music CDs have been transformed into beautiful drink coasters. We’re supplying the CDs, the felts, and the laminate – you supply the glue. To pick up one of these kits, please stop by the branch; once again, we have a limited supply and it’s first come, first served. For more information on library events, Summer Reading, and more, call us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Our public service hours are 10 a.m., to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. You can also find the information at the Gaston County Public Library’s website at www.gastonlibrary. org; information on events, how to access digital service, library hours, etc. Happy Summer!

SHOOTING From Page 3 in April, 2016, we have had more than 85,000 visits,” Hutchins added. Commissioner Hutchins was instrumental in the development of the facility. NCWRC’s release also stated that the Foothills Public Shooting Complex “…is a safe and modern facility for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy year-round social events, competitive tournaments and educational classes.” The sprawling facility boasts an events pavilion, and the shooting complex provides, noted the release, “…a unique setting for corporate, civic and family events. In addition to being used by the general public

for recreation, the shooting complex is also used by law enforcement for professional training. The addition of the new range will allow the Foothills Public Shooting Complex to be able to host national matches.” Commissioner Hutchins continued, “This project could not have been possible without the partnership between Cleveland County and the Wildlife Commission. In addition, I would like to thank the Outdoor Heritage Foundation for their support of this project.” Those wishing more information on the Foothills Public Shooting Complex can visit https://foothillspublicshooting.cc.
