From all indications Cherryville’s 2022 Independence Day celebration was one of the best yet, and that’s saying a lot if past events are reliable

indicators. As was reported on the June 29 Eagle issue, the venue had to be changed; moved actually, due to construction work being done on the downtown area where past celebrations have normally been held. The event was moved to Rudisill Stadium, home of the Cherryville High School Ironmen teams and a better choice could not have been made, according to many of those there at the celebration. The band this year was

Jim Quick and the Coastline Band and they also didn’t disappoint as they belted out their blend of beach music and older tunes so the dancers who always come out to these events could shag the night away n front of the stage. Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III welcomed everyone and then introduced the band, who quickly launched into their vast musical catalog with gusto. By phone, Mayor Beam noted he saw quite a few people there at the stadium,

adding, “When I left shortly after the fireworks began, I drove on Pink Street and saw many people in chairs watching. Even the tables at Houser Drug were filled with many, many people, and at the First Baptist Church parking lot I noticed a great many folks watching.” He said people told him there were also “many people” at Phoenix Computer Systems’ parking lot watching as well. He continued, “I thought it (the celebration) was great

and certainly one of the best we’ve had. It was great to see everybody come out to celebrate our Independence Day. I believe this was the largest crowd our city has entertained for the Independence celebration. I would suggest we continue at this location for future July 4th celebrations.” Mayor Beam added, “This size crowd needs the larger area to accommodate them. My hope is that the city can continue to host bigger and better venues that will fill

Rudisill Stadium and please all that attend. Thanks go to all the sponsors and volunteers that made this year’s celebration such a great success.” City Manager Brian Dalton said, “I felt that the July 4th celebration was a huge success! I have had nothing but positive comments about the event and being able to have it in Rudisill Stadium! Liberty Mountain drama celebrates faith and freedom Liberty Mountain performances are on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Sunday, July 17 by LORETTA COZART CF Media

Liberty Mountain: The Revolutionary Drama has returned to the Joy Performance Center at 202 S. Railroad Ave., for its seventh season. And for one actor, Liberty Mountain is more than a play. It is a family tradition. Jeremy Trent Homesley of Cherryville has been cast in roles of Liberty Mountain since the first season. See LIBERTY, Page 2

Cherryville Elementary has a new principal in the person Mr. Patrick Watson. He takes over the helm from Mrs. Audrey Hovis who is pursuing other education avenues. Watson hails from Cleveland County where he said both of his parents were involved teaching or education in some way. “I grew up in Shelby, N.C.,” he said, “and both my parents were in education. My mother, Margaret Watson, was an AIG teacher for Cleveland County Schools and my father, Earl Watson, was Superintendent of Cleveland County Schools before he retired.” Watson continued, “After graduating from Crest High School, I attended and graduated from Western Carolina University with a BA in English. A few years later, I graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Master of Arts in Leadership.” Watson is the father of

Watson credits his parents as being “a big influence” in his decision to work in the education pro-

fession. “I felt a calling to make a difference in the lives of other people as an educator,” he said, adding his “…first teaching job was at Chase High School in Rutherford County.”

Terri Blake LINCOLNTON – Terri Irene Quickel Blake, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2022, after a courageous 17-month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, surrounded by family. She was 70. Terri was born March 16, 1952 in Lincoln County as the oldest child to Helen Irene Brown Quickel Sides and the late Lewis Alvin Quickel. Terri was defined by the love of her family, her service to her community, her excellence as a Certified Public Accountant, her commitment and care for her clients, which was buoyed by her faithfulness as a Godly woman of faith. She grew up and spent the majority of her life in Lincoln County where she was a pillar and servant of the Lincolnton community. Upon graduation from West Lincoln High School and after years as a homemaker, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. She went on to become a Certified Public Accountant after her graduation. She faithfully worked and was a lead partner at Sherrill, Blake, Harrison CPA/PA for 40 years. She was known for working at all hours of the night and if you saw her corner light on at 2 a.m., during tax season and were a client, rest assured she was likely checking and finalizing your return. She was particular in everything that she did. Coupled with her commitment to her accounting practice, Terri gave of herself to many endeavors in the Lincolnton community. She served in a myriad of capacities through the years with the Hesed House of Hope, Inc., Lincoln County Coalition Against Child Abuse, Lincoln County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Lincoln County Community Foundation, Lincolnton – Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council, and the Carolina Trust Bank board. Never a person wanting public acknowledgement for her service, her efforts were recognized at various times as the Lincoln County Small Business Woman of the Year (2009), Lincoln County Woman of the Year (2013), and the Ola Mae Foster Award recipient (2018). She seemed to know everyone in Lincoln County and there was never a short trip to the store or a restaurant. She invariably would run into someone that she knew and the conversations would begin and time was forgotten. While Terri’s professional life was a significant part of her life, her role as the centerpiece of our family and as a faithful member and believer of her church was even more critical. She was a faithful wife and partner to Ron for almost 40 years. They were the best of friends, where traveling and discovering new things was always around the corner. She was an unbelievable mother (the absolute best) to four children, Chris, Tracy, Matthew, and Brian where we all relied on her love and

counsel in everything that we did. The best Nana to eight wonderful grandchildren, Cory, Chelsea, Victoria, Cameron, Beckham, Elan, Schuyler, and Oliver, where nothing was ever too expensive or too far to do. In addition, she faithfully served at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Crouse, her entire life. She was the organist from the age of 12, the long-standing church treasurer, as well as the treasurer for the North Carolina Lutheran Synod for a number of years. She was dearly loved by her church community. If the doors were open, Terri was there to serve her church. Survivors include her husband, Glenn “Ron” Blake; children, Chris Blake (Nikki), Tracy Barger (Daniel), Matthew Eurey (Krista), and Brian Blake (Sarah); mother, Helen Brown Sides; grandchildren, Cory Blake, Chelsea Blake, Victoria Barger, Cameron Blake, Beckham Eurey, Elan Eurey, Schuyler Blake, and Oliver Blake; and siblings, Lewis Quickel Jr. (Phyllis), and Kim Baker (Mike). The family received friends Thursday, July 7, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Carpenter – Porter Funeral & Cremation Services in Cherryville. Funeral services were held Friday, July 8, 2022, at 1 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Crouse with Pastor Rick Sloop officiating. Burial followed at Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton. Kenneth L. Marks CHERRYVILLE – Kenneth Livingston Marks, 87, of Lincolnton, passed away peacefully July 8, 2022 at the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville, N.C. He was born March 14, 1935 in Olney, Maryland, to the late William Burnell and Fanny Elizabeth (Young) Marks. Kenneth (“Ken”) graduated with a B.S. in Transportation from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He served in the National Guard. Ken worked with Carolina Freight Carriers of Cherryville for many years and then for Lowe’s in N. Wilkesboro. He was active within the First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton and the Habitat for Humanity organization in his community. In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Dellinger Marks, and brother, William B. Marks, Jr. of Maryland. He is survived by children, David Marks (Lisa), Kenneth Marks (Kathy), Elizabeth Gordon (Jim); stepchildren Cameron Valentine “Dane”, Vivette Valentine Leonhardt (Steve), and Velvet Valentine Champion (Tommy); and numerous grandchildren, and step-grandchildren,

and several great-grandchildren. A private family graveside service will be conducted at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Cherryville, N.C. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2022 at First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton with Rev. Dr. Tim Roberts officiating. Shelva Russ MOORESVILLE – Shelva Grace McSwain Russ, 84, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on Sunday July 3, 2022. She was born on Jan. 17, 1938, in Gastonia, N.C., to the late Elsie Black McSwain and Oliver McSwain. Shelva was retired from Davidson College. She enjoyed the beach, walking, yard work, gardening, canning and spending time with her family. Shelva was a member of First Baptist Church, Mooresville, where she was a member of the adult choir, taught Sunday School and assisted with various other ministries. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Oliver McSwain Jr., Jack McSwain, Jerome McSwain (Betty), Paul McSwain (Naomi) and Robert McSwain, and sister Betty Farris (Roy). Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Rodney Russ and wife, Lucinda; Teresa Russ Stevenson and husband, John; Debbie Dunlop and husband, Rick; and David Russ and wife, Sherie. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Meg Russ, Brittany Russ, Seth Stevenson (Erica), Kristian Stevenson (Hannah), Ben Dunlop (Amie), Emily Dunlop, Lauren Poupore (Gavin), Austin Russ; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Kinley and husband, Ernest, and Pauline Watson; sister-in-law, Diane McSwain; and numerous nieces and nephews. Many who chose to oppose the crown had come to America with a chip on their shoulders, victims of poverty and hardship in Ireland and blaming their British landowners. They came to the colonies seeking both land and freedom to worship as they pleased. When the war moved south, both violently and suddenly, settlers were forced to choose sides. And that was not an easy task because their very lives, and the lives of their families, depended upon which side they chose. But a choice had to be made. This dilemma is key to understanding how civil war came to the Carolina backcountry in 1780. The story is real for many whose family members included both Loyalists and Patriots, whose ancestors founded this region, and the descendants who continue to live in Kings Mountain today. For many, the battled pitted brother against brother. To them this story is a part of their family history and Liberty Mountain brings their story to life. Over the years, the play has evolved. Jeremy says, “With Bob’s writing at the heart, the story has stayed true and has driven everything in a very consistent way. What has changed is this: what started as a traditional theater experience has now been combined with an outdoor theater experience. Over time, those two experiences have met in the middle.” He explains, “You can see how open the stage is because of our combat and choreography. The use of projection allows us to free up our stage. In the first two years, we had traditional set pieces and the

stage was very cluttered. The fight scenes were limited because of space and access. By meeting in the middle and using a few moving set pieces, we keep the stage open like a traditional outdoor drama.” Cherryville native Homesley is married to Ashley DeMar and together they have a son, Roan, named for Roan Mountain that is mentioned in the play. “We met during Liberty Mountain, and I proposed to her on the stage after one of the shows.” Jeremy says, “To us, Liberty Mountain is a family tradition.” His parents are Rev. Scott and Robin Homesley, also of Cherryville. This year’s performance features 21 actors, who share the story of people who lived in the backcountry of North and South Carolina, including the Martin family, who faced many tragedies in Scotland, Ireland, and America that lead them to support the Patriot cause. At times, the realities of their lives are too much to bear. Speaking of the actors, novelist, screenwriter, and playwright Bob Inman says, “I am so proud of this year’s cast. They are, youngest to oldest, professional, not just for Liberty Mountain, but for any play I’ve ever run. They are really, really, good.” “By the end of the first week, they had everything down. I mean everything, the fight scenes, the whole bit. The second week was just cleaning up,” he added. “They were able to run the whole play on the Friday night of the first week of rehearsal.” Liberty Mountain is an exciting, immersive story that keeps guests on the See DRAMA, Page 3

From Page 1 “I was drawn to the play for a combination of reasons: the opportunity to do theater and my love of history. I was working in Kings Mountain at a fabric company and Director Caleb Sigmon, and his wife Katy, came in to purchase fabric for the costumes that first year,” he said. He went on to say, “I had been thinking about auditioning and when Caleb and Katy walked through the door, it cinched it for me. I auditioned and was offered the role of Ferguson that first year. My wife Ashley says that I originated the role in the world premiere!” He reprised his role for three more seasons before taking a hiatus. This year, he has taken up the role once again. One might wonder why Jeremy decided to play Ferguson. He explains, “You must do the role justice, with honor and respect for the human who existed and was well-known. If you are going to embrace the story, you have to embrace all parts of it. And what an interesting person he was! He is a vital part of this story.” “Ferguson was Scottish, and people living here weren’t a lot different,” Jeremy says, referring to the Scots-Irish who were Ulster Protestants who come to America from Ulster in Northern Ireland in search of land and religious freedom. “Many settlers here had Scottish and Irish accents,” Jeremy said. “And Ferguson, I think, represented the old world to them. I’m sure it was tempting to choose to side with him and stay loyal to the King.”

They are aware of the people in and out of the store and parking lot. I met them this past year one morning on my way to school when I stopped for a Pepsi, and I felt safe knowing they were there. But people are people no matter where you may travel. Each person has a story and often times is just waiting for someone to listen. Sadly, many times I am too busy to listen, but I am certainly making an effort to slow down and pay attention to people. Of course, we must always be careful when meeting people to just remember safety as well. That sounds like a resolution for the new year, but I’m going to work on it right now. It just might be a great thing to do on the “Fourth of July” or any day for that matter.

Allen, KY; mental illness erupts into pure hell Allen, KY, is a place that holds fond memories for me. When I was only Glenn Mollette 16 years Guest Editorial old, Allen Baptist Church invited me to speak for a weekend youth event. I had the opportunity to meet and work with over 100 people from the Allen community. Lasting friendships were made with some of the finest people on earth. To this day, the kindness and fellowship bestowed on me by that group of people were instrumental in my life’s direction. Sadly, even the finest communities and dearest people on earth can experience pure hell. Mental illness erupted as Floyd County police officers were shot dead in Allen last week. According to news reports they were trying to serve a warrant to a man accused of domestic violence. Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt said the officers faced “…pure hell” when they arrived at the man’s home. Four other people were injured at the scene in Allen, a small town of 166 people, located just

outside of Prestonsburg. The officers who died in the shooting late on Thursday have been named as Capt. Ralph Frasure, Dep. William Petry and dog handler Jacob Chaffins. K9 Drago, one of the dogs that Mr. Chaffins handled, also died. Captain Frasure had been with the Prestonsburg, KY, Police Department for 39 years. The department said he had served “…with honor and glory up until the last second.” The men ran into a barrage of gunfire from a rifle when they went to the house on Main St., shortly before 6 EST. The shooting continued for nearly 3 hours before suspect Lance Storz was taken into custody, having surrendered after negotiations involving members of his family. He has been charged with two counts of murdering a police officer, five counts of attempted murder of a police officer, one count of attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault on a service animal. The families and friends of the slain police officers and the wounded officers have been forever changed. The community of Allen

will forever be scarred by one of the worst events to ever occur in the state of Kentucky. Gun violence is not limited to age. An assault rifle in the hands of any mentally deranged person results in tragedy. Police officers have a scary job. It’s no wonder they are nervous and seem sometimes quick to pull their weapons. Floyd County officers walked into a situation and were totally caught off guard. Looking back, they would approach Storz differently. A miscalculation too often is fatal. In the moments of what appears to be just another day of work or life, the worst tragedies can happen. Allen is a wonderful eastern Kentucky town. The town is filled with beautiful, loving people. Evil at the highest level can exist and erupt in any place. It’s not limited to a big city hundreds of miles away. This is why all communities, sheriff departments, schools and churches must be vigilant in being aware of the ongoing dangers of America’s growing mental illness epidemic. Ignoring our cultural mental illness dilemma will only perpetuate ongoing fatalities.

Perhaps that is part of the appeal of spirituality, because it is so vague it can literally become whatever you want it to be. You will note that while Jesus levies heavy criticism against the religious establishment of His day, He never falls into the vague spirituality that has so gripped our day and time. In our Scripture today Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem. He is about to take up His cross and go down a narrow road that few will tread. And on His way He invites us to walk with Him. Three people come to Jesus and announce, “I will follow You wherever You go.” But then Jesus confronts them with specific demands of discipleship. As this Scripture points

out, Jesus is demanding and calls us to a very specific way of life. Jesus is not infinitely pliable. True, there is a great deal that we do not know about Jesus, a great deal left unsaid by the gospels. But there is also a great deal that we do know that is undeniable, unavoidable, and troubling to our settled arrangements with the present order. In a world of amorphous, undemanding deity and nebulous spirituality we are sometimes tempted to weasel out of our encounters with Jesus to jettison a particular God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in favor of a more generic one of our own making. We may be tempted to make the faith as broad and as universal in its appeal as possible. So, we might be tempted to talk about “love” without giving “love” the cruciform shape that makes Christian love so

demanding. We must trust Jesus enough to create the following that He deserves. The proper object of our worship is Jesus Christ. Our challenge, as people who have been called to follow Jesus is not that we get busy believing that God was in Jesus but that God was in Jesus reconciling the world to Himself. We cannot make this faith mean anything we want. Rather than attempting to smooth out the rough places between us and the good news of Jesus Christ, our calling is to highlight the distance between our ways and God’s way, a distance that isn’t bridged by simply smoothing the rough edges of the gospel. The way towards a fulfilling and deep faith life is a way that looks to Christ and seeks to embody the same self-giving and self-sacrificial love through which Jesus Christ so

radically reoriented our lives. Jesus often provokes conflict with our most cherished values and widely held beliefs. Jesus sometimes speaks to us in ways that are hard to understand. Sometimes Jesus makes demands of us that seem far out of range of our abilities. But if we dare to come forth and follow, if we will dare to believe that when He said, “Follow me”, He was talking to us. He promises us a great adventure named discipleship. May we lay aside our doubts and misgivings, may our sights be set not on the kingdoms of this world, but may our vision be cast continually towards the Kingdom of God. A Kingdom well defined by Scripture, a Kingdom that is not merely “spiritual” but one that is real if we will but do the work of following Jesus. Grace and Peace!

Worry or Peace? Cherryville Area I’ve had seasons in my life that were unbelievably tough and traumatic. The shock, fear, pain, and grief of what I was dealing with devastated me. I found myself talking and thinking frequently about the problem until I was consumed by it. During those times, DANYALE PATTERSON I had a decision to make: Would I continue to embrace worry, or would I choose peace? I learned quickly that worrying about a problem doesn’t provide any solutions to the issue, or offer anything beneficial to our lives. Proverbs 12:25 (NLT) says, “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up”. In fact, excessive worrying can be detrimental to our health, causing migraine headaches, insomnia, depression, strokes, and other issues. However, Jesus offers something better to replace our worries. He extends peace, a supernatural freedom from disturbance. In John 14:27 (NLT), Jesus states, “I am leaving you with a gift peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” HE CAN WORK IT OUT! In addition, God promises that he will not neglect us and that he has a plan. Even if we don’t understand his plan, we have to remind ourselves that God is omniscient and omnipresent; he knows the past, present, and future. He sees how everything is interconnected and fits all things together like a puzzle. Through his wisdom and power, he is able to effectively work in us, through us, for us, and even in spite of us. Romans 8:28 (NLT) says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God, and are called according to his purpose for them.” SUBSTITUTES Alternatives to worry are exercising, listening to uplifting music, talking to someone about personal fears, or brainstorming positive outcomes to the situation. Also, distracting the thoughts with scripture and praying its promises produces strength and peace. Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, you are a good God. I know that you care about me. You are my refuge and my strength, a very present help in the time of trouble. You go before me and with me; you will never leave me or abandon me. I thank you for the many times you have already strengthened, helped, and upheld me in your righteous right hand. Right now Father I give you my concerns. I am exchanging my worries for your peace. Lincoln County man charged with child sexual assault Suspect being held under a $95,000 secured bond LINCOLNTON – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reported on July 6, that a western Lincoln County man is facing several charges in connection with a child sexual assault. On July 2, 2022 Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Bill Ledford Road, Vale, in reference to a sexual assault involving a juvenile female. During the investigation,

The Cherryville American Legion Post 100 seniors Area IV quarterfinals, best-of-5 series started last Friday night at 7 p.m., at Fraley Field as Coach Bob Reynolds and his men, representing Area IV West, took on visiting Matthews Post 235, who represented the Area IV East. And, as seems to be the case, the weather is wreaking havoc on many of the games, forcing the teams to postpone some games and reschedule. That said, in this first Area IV Q-finals matchup, the Post 100 men blanked the Matthews squad at Fraley, 7-0. Coach Reynolds started with right-hander Joseph Webb, who threw three (3) strikeouts and went five inning to get the win. Kanon Willis came in the sixth inning and finished the game, striking out one batter and walking one. with the new locations and its challenges. The Cherryville High School athletic director, Scott Harrill, worked so well with the event leader, Mary Beth Tackett, and the festival and events team. I personally oversaw the beer garden, which was in a separate location from the festival. It was located on Hoyle Street. We were able to add the beer garden and this was a great asset to the festivities. We had so many volunteers from the community who helped make this successful in this temporary location and the experience brought huge crowds to

the Cherryville festival which continued with its reputation of being one of the best in Gaston County.” Cherryville Fire Chief Jason Wofford said of the celebration, “I am extremely thankful for all the firefighters who took the time away from family and vacations to help participate in setting off fireworks for our July 4th celebration. It takes a great amount of work to pull this off and they have done so for 20-plus years. Special thanks go to Assistant Chief (Colby) Heffner and Captain (Nathan) Bowman for putting on a

Page 9 great show. Everything went well without any reports of damage. I would also like to thank the First United Methodist Church and its members for allowing us to utilize their parking lot for the fireworks.” Assistant Fire Chief Heffner was equally excited about how it all went down, noting, “I believe that this year’s fireworks were great! Everything went as planned and there were no injuries reported that I am aware of! We had great support from our members at CFD, surrounding mutual aid departments (Waco VFD, Hugh’s Pond VFD and others, Cherryville Police, GEMS and Gaston County Sheriff’s Office), Gaston County Schools, and most importantly, First United Methodist Church! Their willingness to allow us to use their parking lot to shoot the fireworks created a safe viewing experience for all and we are very grateful for their support and cooperation. I have only heard positive comments from numerous citizens and city employees about the event. We are proud to serve in this capacity for the City of Cherryville and we look forward to always providing a safe, and enjoyable, fireworks display for the citizens and visitors of Cherryville!” Captain Bowman echoed his sentiments, adding, “I

heard a lot of good things about the fireworks and celebration. From a fire aspect we had no incidents except the vehicle wreck as people were leaving the show at Hick St., and Church Street. I believe this year with the help of Waco, Hugh’s Pond, and Tryonota Fire Departments, it has helped our department grow closer together and strengthen our bonds with each other. We look forward to serving the city and celebrating our freedom for many years to come. We especially want to thank each and every veteran that has served, is serving, and that will serve, our great nation in the future.” Cherryville Police Chief Cam Jenks said the City workers did an excellent job, as did the men and women of the Cherryville Police Department and other attending law enforcement agencies who assisted that night, in making sure it was a safe and great celebration for the City of Cherryville. Electric Trikes Provide Older Riders Fun, Fitness and Safety Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about electric trikes for semi-seniors? I used to cycle a lot in my younger years but have some balance problems and don’t trust myself on a two-wheeler anymore. I’ve read that electric powered trikes are a good option for older riders but could use some help choosing one. Unsteady Eddie Dear Eddie, Electric powered adult tricycles – also known as e-trikes – are a great cycling option for older adults with balance or stamina issues because they’re safe and super fun to ride, and easy on an aging body. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips to help you shop for one. Safer Cycling If you’re interested in cycling, but worry about falling or injuring yourself, e-trikes are a great choice because of the three-wheeled stability they provide. With a trike you can ride as slow as you want without ever losing your balance, which is very reassuring for most older riders. E-trikes also come with a small electric

powered motor to enhance the riding experience, so when you saddle up and apply the throttle the motor will give you a boost when pedaling, or it will do all the work for you. This makes it much easier to whiz up hills and ride into headwinds without gassing yourself or taxing your knee joints.

Most e-trikes can reach speeds of anywhere between 15 and 28 miles per hour, and typically go somewhere between 20 and 55 miles on a single charge, depending on how much pedaling you do. Battery charge times will vary too, ranging anywhere from 3 to 8 hours.

In addition, most adult e-trikes are also made with a low “step through” design making mounting and dismounting easier; they typically come with big tires that ensure a smooth ride; have ergonomic handlebars that are easy to reach and grip; and offer oversize seats (some even have backrests) for comfort and support.

How to Choose To help you ﬁgure out the right kind of e-trike for you, ask yourself how and where you plan to ride it. If you’re primarily interested in a leisurely ride around the neighborhood for pleasure, ﬁtness or running errands, an upright cruiser e-trike that has a rear cargo basket would be a nice choice.

There are many different types of adult e-trikes to choose from with prices ranging anywhere from around $2,000 up to $7,000. To shop for one, contact some bike shops in your area to see what they offer, or you may need to order one online.

Some popular options in this category include: Addmotor’s M-340 Electric Fat Trike and M-360 Semi-Recumbent Trike (both $3,000, addmotor.com); Emojo Caddy Pro ($2,900, emojobike.com); Sixthreezero EVRYjourney 250W Tricycle ($2,200, sixthreezero.com); EWheels EW-29 ($2,000, ewheelsdealers.com); and Buzz Cerana T ($1,700, buzzbicycles.com).

When shopping for an e-trike, pay special attention to the motor, which determines how fast it will go, and the battery, which determines how far it will go between charges.

Or, if you’re looking to take longer road rides a recumbent e-trike may be a better option. These are aerodynamic,

low-to-the-ground stretched-out frame trikes that allow you to recline with your legs positioned in front of you. Catrike (catrike.com) and TerraTrikes (terratrike.com) are two of the biggest U.S. companies that make recumbent tadpole-style trikes (the two wheels are in front) and they both offer electric assist options at prices ranging from $5,000 to $,7000. There are also folding e-trikes, which are practical if you have limited home storage space or would like to take your trike with you when traveling.
