Cherryville Dixie All-Stars receive Sportsmanship Trophy and medals Coaches, players excited to receive prestigious award by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
On Wednesday, July 20, Randy Welch, the Assistant State Director for the NC Dixie Youth Softball program traveled from Raleigh to meet up with a group of great young ladies and their coaches to award the team with a prestigious award. Welch met the excited group of 11–12-year-olds at Cherryville’s Ballard Park, the home of the C.V. Thornburg Softball fields, and congratulated all of them on the
award. Head coach Matthew Anthony said he and fellow coaches Nicole Ogle and Faith Anthony were all “pretty excited” to receive the award. In addition to the big trophy, the young ladies were all given medals signifying their good sportsmanship as well. “We (the Dixie All-Stars) played on July 8-12 in the State Tournament in Carthage (North Carolina). We lost both games but we won the 2022 Sportsmanship Award for the 11-12-yearold group (Ponytails). This trophy and the medals means a lot to us,” said Coach Matthew Anthony. Mr. Welch spoke to the
young ladies and their coach, thanking them all for coming out and meeting with him. “This is a great honor and a great award,” noted Welch, as he presented the big trophy to the girls and their coaches. Team members are: Daisi Huskins, Jaylon Motley, Jenny Brown, Kailee Walker, Masey McDaniel, Chloe Gregory, Olivia Waters, Marissa Kiser, Addison Pruett, Olivia Harmon, Haylee Lynch, and Kailynn Miller. Coaches are Matthew Anthony, Nicole Ogle, and Faith Anthony. Coach Anthony said it was an honor for them to represent Cherryville at the Dixie Youth State Tournament.

The venerable Stroup Memorial Park, a part of Cherryville’s parks system since its dedication on Aug. 14, 1988, was a labor of love for the late Howell Stroup. The park is dedicated to the memory of his mother and father, Vera Mae Howell Stroup and Matthew Augustus Stroup, as is evidenced by a plaque placed at the park in their memory. Mr. Stroup’s drive and determination and passion for his beloved home town made an impression on all who knew him and worked

Lois L. Driggers
Tracey Ellis
RENTON, WA – On Friday, July 15, 2022, Lois L. Driggers, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 89. Lois was born on June 1, 1933 in Morganton, NC, to James Webb and Lizzie Grigg. She attended Georgetown University School of Nursing in Washington D.C., and retired in 1995 after 37 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse for the City of Lynchburg. Lois had the biggest heart, the most sarcastic wit, the ability to make a treasure out of something others would throw away and the creativity of a thousand souls. She was a nurse by trade but a published poet and author, as well as a wealth of knowledge on almost any topic. She loved traveling, sunsets and hummingbirds, writing poetry and painting, doing ceramics and crocheting, and taking care of people; and she did it all so well. Lois was preceded in death by her father, Webb, her mother, Lizzie, her sister, Betty, her brother, JW, and her son, Eddie. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Bailey-Stone (Covington, WA), her granddaughters, Cameron Jezorek and her husband, Matt (Maple Valley, WA), Carrie Cordier and her husband, Jason (Lynchburg, VA), and Heather Driggers (Lynchburg, VA). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Morgan Kohler and her husband, Daniel, Christopher Jezorek, Lily Jezorek (Maple Valley), and Zander Driggers (Lynchburg, VA). No funeral services will be held at this time, a celebration of her life will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Flintoft’s Funeral Home and Crematory served the family of Ms. Driggers.
SHELBY – Tracey Lynn Ellis, 59, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022, at White Oak Manor in Shelby, N.C. Born in Washington, DC, on March 1, 1963, she was the daughter of the late Athol Haney Ellis, Jr. (Chick), and Sada Woltz Ellis. Tracey is survived by her sister, Pamela Ann Hillis; Pam’s husband, Brian Hillis; Brian’s family; and many cousins and friends. Tracey lived at Holy Angels Nursery in Belmont for 22 years, and Gaston Residential Services (GRS) group homes for 37 years until shortly before her death. Holy Angels was a place of loving, living and learning for Tracey. GRS supported her to live her life as a respected member of her community. Tracey was active in her community. She loved making and visiting friends and family, traveling to fun places, bowling, dancing, watching adventurous shows, and playing UNO. She had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed taking pictures of her friends. Tracey was born with developmental disabilities that never held her back. She earned her high school diploma from the former Mary Ellen Nelson Center, now the Webb Street School, in 1984. She participated in classes at Holy Angels and Gaston County College and worked for many years at Holy Angels; Sara Lee, Bali Division; GRS Offices; and Papa John’s Restaurant. Tracey attended the Life Enrichment Center in Kings Mountain from 20182022. She attended church with the Sisters of Mercy while at Holy Angels Nursery, and attended East Baptist Church in Gastonia for many years before moving to a GRS facility in Cherryville.
She attended the Cherryville Victory Life Assembly of God until her health declined. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. Words of encouragement were offered by Rev. Richard Stroup. The family received friends immediately following the service. Online condolences may be made at www.cecilmburtonfuneralhome.com. Streaming TV for me is “Screaming TV!” Okay, I cononly be fess here and found now – I’m a on one Luddite when it of the comes to streammany ing television. streamWhat’s a Luding netdite, you ask? works Well, my dear offered reader, derogaby yet torily speaking, another it is a person Hollyopposed to new weird technology or media ways of workgiant By Michael Powell ing, i.e., me! or their michael.cherryvilleeagle@gmail.com Especially when minions! it comes to getting to What the…? Ya in!” Me: “So, like, millennial… we have, like four in our house and I can’t seem to, like, figure the bloody things out, like, right? He: “Right. Well, not right, like, what’s the problem, old guy? You DO know what a HTML connector is, right? Ya TV has one or more on it, right?” Me: “Thank you boy genius. I DO know what an HTML connector is; I think I shot one when I was out deer hunting with my dad back in the day. But seriously… I digress…” He: “You di-whut? Look man, I don’t want to know any personal stuff. We’re just here to talk ‘lectronics, right?” Suffice it to say, I finally had enough of his double speak and basic inability to communicate, so I had to ask for an adult with whom to converse. The manager came out and, long story short, I was directed to get with my cable provider,
Airline travel woes, flying is frustrating Airline travelers have experienced frustration since the 2021 holidays as covGlenn Mollette ered by Guest Editorial national news. Travel delays and even trip cancellations have been aggravating experiences for travelers. If you only have a weekend and your trip includes a flight on Friday and a return flight on Sunday you are chancing a lost weekend. Being delayed from Friday to Saturday is sure to sour your trip. My wife and I have flown a few times and it seems as if there is a new devil at every level. Last Spring, we hoped for a few days in Florida. We booked our flight from Indiana to change planes in Atlanta before going on to Florida. We checked our luggage and had minimum provisions in our backpacks. We arrived in Atlanta on a Saturday afternoon only to learn that our plane on to Florida was cancelled because of weather. We also heard from fellow disgruntled travelers and a TSA agent that the cancellation was really due to problems with air traffic controllers. We also heard that Delta was very short-staffed.
After standing in line at a ticket counter for two hours I was told the next available flight was two nights later at 7 p.m. We were advised that our luggage was already on another plane to our destination. We had no choice but to find a hotel room. Thousands of other flights were delayed or had been cancelled that day. Hotel rooms were not easy to find. We finally found one. We were forced to get a taxi and stay two nights in Atlanta with minimal provisions. Needless to say, it was an extra unplanned expense. When we finally arrived in Florida, I knew we were good on transportation. I had paid in advance for a rental car. We got the car pretty fast. However, I wasn’t told that our upfront payment was forfeited because we didn’t pick up the car within a 24-hour time frame of the reservation date. I didn’t realize I was paying a second time until I reviewed my bank statement later. Since I had paid for the car up front, I did not think that Budget would care if we were delayed. I thought wrong. According to Budget you have to let them know within 24 hours if your plans change. I learned something new. Education is always expensive. I disputed the charge but my
bank stood with Budget. All in all, my wife and I had a good time in Ft. Myer’s Beach, Florida. Except, flying was miserable that time around. Delta Airlines made no offers to compensate us with any new or free tickets. They felt no obligation to cover any of the additional expenses we incurred in Atlanta. Budget Rent A Car made double money for an old Camry they rented me. The car was a take it or leave it. They said it was all they had available when I arrived. Are there any answers? Sure. Stay home. Or, try to find flights that are direct if possible. This seems harder and harder. Buy a small suitcase that fits the legal carry-on dimensions. Then you will have your bag with you. If you can handle your trip without a rental car, you might be happier. Sometimes this is impossible but not always. We recently traveled to Baltimore and stuck with taxis. We saved quite a bit because we didn’t pay for a rental car and we didn’t have to pay parking fees at the hotel. I don’t like to fly in storms. I do want the airlines to make my safety a priority. I would rather arrive late than never. Just be aware that in the age we currently live in flying can be frustrating.

Satan’s Satellite’s-R-Us, who were, as always, totally NOT helpful, and even a tad bit snarky and smarmy. One word that I did get from them that I understood was “Netflix”, so the wife and I are going to do a bit of research and see what we can come up
with once we ditch the satellite dish and lose our tinfoil caps. Hopefully, soon your favorite Luddite will be able to watch all his favorite streaming TV shows. Heck, I may even get real brave and adventurous and pony up some
real cash and get Disney-Plus, Hulu, and Apple TV! I’m a rebel without a clue, so let’s all “Cut the cable y’all”! Cheers, and happy watching!

Carson v. Makin: A trilogy of cases protecting religious liberty, completed by JOHN A. SPARKS Guest columnist In 2017, the Supreme Court decided a case that involved a school playground resurfacing program provided by the state of Missouri. Trinity Lutheran School sought a state grant, which was generally offered to other schools, but Trinity was denied funding solely because it was a religious school. The Supreme Court found in favor of the school, saying that it had every right, under the free exercise clause of the First Amendment, to participate in a government benefit program without giving up its religious affiliation. In 2020, the high court continued efforts to return the free exercise clause to the strength the Americans founders intended. The case was Espinoza v. Montana. Montana gave tax credits to donors who created scholarships for private schools, but the state refused to allow parents who received scholarships to put them toward tuition at religious schools. The Supreme Court found against Montana, saying that requiring a school “to divorce itself from any religious control or affiliation” in order to obtain the scholarship monies “deters or discourages the exercise

of First Amendment rights.” Now the new decision in Carson v. Makin, the third case in that trilogy of cases, again finds that a state-instituted program (this time in Maine) which “operates to identify and exclude otherwise eligible schools on the basis of their religious exercise” violates the free exercise clause of the First Amendment. Here are the details: The state of Maine is the most rural state in the union. In some school districts, that resulted in too few students to financially justify the existence of a public secondary school. Consequently, Maine permitted those districts to provide a program of “tuition assistance” to families in those locations. One of the options open to parents was to choose a private school to which the publicly provided tuition monies would be sent. The Carson family and another family chose religious schools to which to send their children (Bangor Christian Schools and Temple Academy) because they lived in districts where no public secondary school existed and desired religious instruction as part of their children’s education. Prior to 1981, the choice of a religiously af-
filiated school would have presented no problem, but in that year the state attorney general ruled that the practice could not continue because it amounted to “an establishment of religion.” The Maine legislature responded by requiring that tuition assistance payments, from then on, only go to “nonsectarian” schools, meaning those without a religious affiliation. The Carsons brought legal action and the case, after making its way through the lower courts, ended up before the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the high court sided with the families and against the state of Maine. The court first addressed Maine’s claim that if tuition were to be paid to the religious schools, that would amount to an “establishment of religion.” The court pointed out that in a case decided in 2002, which involved a Cleveland, Ohio, voucher program, it had already held that a benefit program under which private citizens “direct government aid to a religious schools wholly as a result of their own independent and private choice does not offend the Establishment Clause.” The court here once again recognized that See CASES, Page 5

Let Go Of The Wheel (4th & Final Part of the “Freedom” series) Have you ever driven somewhere and had someone either in the backseat, or on the passenger side, constantly telling you what to do instead of letting you drive? Or, were you that person being the “backseat’ driver? LOL! Either way, it reminds me of how we love to be in control over every aspect of our lives. We say to the Lord, “You are the driver of my life.” Then, we give him a list of demands of what he needs to do for us and where he needs to take us, instead of patiently trusting him to lead us on this journey of life. In Matthew 16:24 (MSG) Jesus stated, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am…” The Gift of Grace Why is it hard to relinquish that control? I believe it’s because we love to appear strong and invincible. Control makes us feel powerful. I don’t know anyone who wants to feel weak and vulnerable. I actually have a friend who is terrified to let anyone ever see her cry. The truth is we all have weaknesses: we experience pain, disappointment, fear, and anger. At times, we just don’t know what to do - and it can feel stressful and overwhelming! Fortunately, God knows that we have struggles and He offers something better than the need for control. He provides GRACE! In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT), Apostle Paul (who had many difficult trials) states: “Each time he (Jesus) said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.“ God is Trustworthy
CASES From Page 4 indirect aid to religious schools, selected by parents, clearly was not equivalent to “an establishment of religion,” by which the founders meant a tax-supported, state-mandated church. The majority opinion, written by the Chief Justice John Roberts, went on to identify the court’s cardinal principle that “a state violates the free exercise clause when it excludes religious observers from otherwise available public benefits.” Drawing on the Trinity playground and the Montana scholarship cases, Roberts says that though a state need not subsidize private education, if it does, it cannot disqualify some schools from those benefits because they are religious. The Roberts’ opinion also disputes the claim by Justice Breyer that the court’s holding in favor of the families and against Maine runs contrary to “governmental neutrality” on religious matters. As Roberts points out, “there is nothing neutral about Maine’s program. The state pays tuition for certain students at private schools – so long as the schools are not religious. That is discrimination against religion.”
DANYALE PATTERSON
Our Heavenly Father promises to never abandon us and to always help us. I have found that there is more freedom in trusting him than trying to control what I can’t control. Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NLT) states, “But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I praise you for being the Ancient of Days - You know everything! Forgive me for trying to do things my way, instead of allowing you to lead me. I admit that uncertainty bothers me until I put my full trust in you. Lord, each time I focus on you and your word, my heart is filled with peace. Thank you for being the Prince of Peace. I ask you to show me what you want me to do, and let your gentle Spirit lead me in the right path. Guide me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves and leads me. All day long I put my hope in you. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.” Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you! Maine’s exclusionary statutory language, which banned state aid to religious schools, harkens back to the “Blaine Amendments” named after Congressman James G. Blaine. At its height, over 30 states prevented public aid to “sectarian” schools. Originally, these provisions targeted Catholic schools, but more recently, they have targeted any religious school. The Roberts’ opinion effectively puts the final “nail in the coffin” of those types of provisions. States cannot disqualify private religious schools from being among the recipients of these public funds intended for education. These three cases, because they widen the spectrum of parental educational choice, are especially important. Regrettably, many public schools and their boards have allowed their schools to drift into instruction that parents increasingly find runs counter to their convictions and values. This decision recognizes that parents desire and ought to have real educational alternatives.

What a mighty God we serve! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All REV. DALE HENDRICKS things were Senior Pastor made through Shady Grove Him, and Baptist Church without Him Cherryville nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1:1-5
When I read these verses, all I can say is what a mighty God we serve. It takes me back to when I served as a Youth Pastor and our youth choir sang a song, “What A Mighty God We Serve”. The song states, “Angels bow before Him. Heaven and earth adore Him. What a mighty God we serve”. We serve the mighty God Who is the Creator of this world. What an awesome thought! It is hard for the finite mind to grasp the Trinity. God exists in three divine persons. Such a thought supersedes our human comprehension. John opened his gospel with a great declaration that God has always been and that Jesus was with God in the beginning. In fact, he told us Jesus played a key role as Creator of everything. When we study the vastness of this universe, we must allow the truth
that everything came into existence by the power of Jesus, to be firmly planted in the depths of our minds. We worship the mighty Creator of all. Jesus came to this world to show us God in physical form. Later, after Philip had asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). In a sinful, dark world, Jesus came to shine as a light so we could know of God’s love and respond to it through a relationship with Him. Thank God for the light that pierces the darkness and leads us to eternal life! What a mighty Savior we serve!

READY, SET, LEARN! PRESCHOOL. Hi families! I’ve recently started an in-home, small group private preschool or mom’s morning out program for little ones ages 18 months to 4 years old in Cleveland County. Our in-home preschool program is unique. We aren’t your traditional family child care program but we also are not a center preschool program. We are the best of both worlds…a small, close knit, home-like environment that offers rich, hands on, educational opportunities for preschool aged children to help prepare them for kindergarten success & beyond. If you’re looking for a halfday preschool, we’d love to have your little one join us At Ready, Set, Learn! Preschool to get a head start on “learning to love and loving to learn”. MAKEOVER From Page 1 and for improving the lives of all Cherryville residents. This is evident through his tenure on the town and county school boards, Scout Master of Troop 323, member of the Cherryville Rotary Club, Cherryville New Year’s Shooters, and one of the founders of the Cherryville Historical Society. He would appreciate that the city has recognized the value of improving the park for the enjoyment of many.’” City Manager Brian Dalton and Downtown Director David Day both noted the work on the park was done by the Main Street Design team who were tasked to get this project updated. Day added, “Work began in the Fall of 2021,” and Mr. Dalton said a company called Bean Brothers Landscaping “…completed the work and put in the pavers, along with new flowers/mulch and planted new grass.” Mr. Day also noted that, … the Cherryville High School baseball team and coach Seth Freeman volunteered several hours to help remove the

The removal of the old
trees, shrubs and pavers took several months due to weather. The design team accepted bids and designs and the decision was made in March of 2022 to award Bean Brothers the contract.” He continued, “There has also been donations from a private individual to purchase more tables benches, trash cans, dog disposal stations to the park. This will encourage outdoor seating and visiting for our citizens and also the upcoming new businesses adjacent to the park in a few months.”
A group of volunteer workers prying up pavers to be reused later. It was noted that money was donated by Mr. Patrick O’Leary to complete the project. City Manager Dalton, when asked if the Park was ready to be used, said, “Absolutely! The park is ready for
people to enjoy. This project took several months to complete the work, but there was also months of planning and discussion to decide on what to do.” Mr. Dalton also noted that at this time the park is pretty
much complete, other than possibly adding a few benches. “We have on the agenda to look at the cost of adding security lighting and possibly some art work features in the future,” Dalton added.
