Cherryville “Y’s” beloved Butch Boyd retires after 15-plus years Many friends and co-workers came by and shared pizza and memories of good times by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The staff and family of the Cherryville Family YMCA said a fond “See you later”, coupled with a heartfelt “We love ya!” to long-time manager/administrator Butch Boyd last Wednesday, June 29. Boyd, who has been with the YMCA since May 2, 2007, and his wife of

Butch and Kathy Boyd at last week’s retirement party for him. (photo by MEP/The Eagle/CF Media) 54 years, Kathy, were the guests of honor at pizza

party given in his honor at the new Cherryville YMCA,

on Mountain Street. All of Boyd’s friends and co-workers were there as well as many Y members who all came by to not only wish him well in his retirement but to wish him Happy Birthday as well since Wednesday was also his 76th birthday. Gaston County Family YMCA CEO Sharon Padgett noted that Butch first started at the Stowe Family Y, manning the front desk, then moved over to the Central Y and worked front desk there. She said, in a recent email to the Eagle, “He came to the Cherryville Y in 2010 and never looked back!”

Mr. Boyd said he has also worked in 2008 for the Billy Graham Ministries on a part-time and full-time basis in the past, thoroughly enjoying that work as he was able to witness about his Christian faith and his deeply held belief in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Boyd said he had two strokes while working for the BGEA and had to leave as a result of that, but added he truly loved being there. He and Kathy have two children, Gary, 52, and Lea Ellen Binderup, 48. The Boyd’s (Butch and Kathy) are the grandparents of three, and enjoy spending time with them when they can do so.

Of his retirement, Butch said though he planned to retire at the first of 2022 but things didn’t go quite as planned. He is currently battling a health issue but thanks to his strong faith in God and with the help of his family and friends, he said he is going to continue to get better. As for retirement, Boyd said, “Honestly, I don’t know what I’m going to do now that I’m retiring. I’m a true workaholic! I have worked since I was 16,” he said. Boyd served his country, he said, in the Vietnam War, from 1967 to 1968 and was there, he added, during the See BOYD, Page 2

The many volunteers and workers who came out last Monday, June 27, to help St. John’s Lutheran Church’s Mobile Food Pantry ministry distribute food were fulfilling two of Christ’s commands to all believers – feed those who are hungry and help those who are in need. One of the coordinators, Kim Eaker, noted the volunteers started working at 7:30 a.m., until noon, adding that the actual event runs from 10 a.m. until the supplies they have received to give out are all distributed. Another onsite was Ms. Barbara Decker, who is the Director of Community Affairs and Outreach Manager for the Mobile Food Pantry. Kim also noted, as for

I will never forget him and those memories and the people we have known and have gotten to join the Y. Our legacy here together is, I believe, is helping all those people have a healthier lifestyle. Our members are our mission; I really believe that.” Employee Debbie Lesenger, who has worked with Butch for six years, said, “I’m definitely going to miss him. He is fun to work with. We were thrilled to have our friends from the Schiele Museum with us once again! Ms. Heather brought some “fin-tastic” friends with her last week. We learned about the habitats and adaptations of different aquatic animals such as sea turtles, then learned about some species we have right here in North Carolina. No sea turtles for us, but Ms. Heather did bring along a turtle – a yellow-bellied slider – as well as a black rat snake, an American alligator, and a crayfish. She explained that several of the animals at the Schiele have been rescued and can no longer live in the wild, such as the turtle pictured here; with only one good eye, he would be unable to fend for himself in his natural habitat. We also talked about why it’s important to learn about the ocean and the animals that live in it, even though we aren’t that close to the water ourselves. Finally, we discussed ways to keep the oceans healthy by preventing pollution. Attendees were encouraged to make a “desk pet” before leaving (a shell with eyes glued on) and/ or to pet the alligator. A

fun and educational event for our patrons – all part of Summer Reading here at the Cherryville Branch Library! A friendly reminder to those that have Summer Reading records and/ or logs... be sure to stop by the branch to get your records/logs updated! We have had wonderful initial participation for this year’s program. Our younger patrons should have collected several beads and brag tags with all the reading they’re doing, and we’ve had several teens participating this year, too. We love to see finished records and hand out rewards! We also love to hear about the great books that others have enjoyed. For more information about Summer Reading, future events, and all other library-related questions, call us at (704) 435-6767, or stop by the branch at 605 E. Main Street. Our public service hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday. And we’ll see you soon at Your Cherryville Branch Library!

WE’RE READY.

She also earned the non-finalist talent award, which is given to the contestant with the highest talent score among the contestants not advancing to final round of the pageant. The two awards resulted in Beam taking home an additional $1,500 in scholarship money. “I got involved in the pageant with one goal in mind – to sing ‘Queen of the Night’ on the Miss North Carolina stage,” said Beam. “I am very grateful that my performance was deemed worthy enough of a talent award. In addition to being able to perform at Miss North Carolina, I had the opportunity to meet

young women from across the state who are some of the strongest, smartest, and most talented people I have ever met. I had so much fun getting to know them, and I walked away from the pageant with a new sense of empowerment. It was an amazing experience.” Beam was one of six young women who represented the Gaston County area in the state pageant. The other local contestants included: ■ Miss Gastonia Sharidan Costner, who performed a tap dance to “Sugar, Sugar” for the talent competition. Costner is a graduate of Forestview High School and a student at Winston-Salem State University majoring in exercise science. ■ Miss Mount Holly Andersen Raines, who presented a monologue titled “No Release” for the tal-

Last year, in-kind scholarships were provided by Gaston College, Belmont Abbey College, Gardner-Webb University, and Paul Mitchell – The School in Gastonia. Cash scholarships were provided by Toyota of Gastonia, Hagans Real Estate in Kings Mountain, and the City of Mount Holly. won the Miss North Carolina crown, will tour the state promoting her community service that brings attention to the importance of nutrition, healthy living, and taking the focus off of physical appearance. She also will get ready to compete for the Miss America title in December. Kerrigan Brown of Spivey’s Corner, who won the title of Miss North Carolina’s Outstanding Teen, will represent the state in Dallas, Texas at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in August. For Gaston’s six queens, they will continue making appearances and being involved in community service until they crown their successor later this year. Organizers will be meeting soon to plan for the 2023 Miss Gastonia/Miss Gaston County/ Miss Mount Holly and Outstanding Teen competition, which will be held before Christmas although a date has not been set. Young women ages 13-26 are eligible to compete, and more information about entering will be posted on the Miss Gastonia website and Facebook page in September.

FREEDOM

Each year we, as a nation, celebrate “Independence Day.” It is one of my favorite holidays for a couple of reasons. First, it brings back fond memories of childhood family gatherings, parades and fireworks. Secondly, on July 4th, 1993, my mother received a kidney transplant that lasted 27 years, after 12 years of dialysis. Finally, it reminds me to declare and take hold of the freedom that we have DANYALE PATTERSON in Christ, just as the thirteen colonies courageously proclaimed that they were no longer under, subject or subordinate to King George III, the monarch of Britain and were now free, united and independent states. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV) states, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” READ THE MANUAL There are many things that cause us to get stuck, be overwhelmed or distressed in life. However, no matter what the issue is, the Bible provides answers for everything. Some call it - Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Unfortunately, if we don’t read it, study it and obey it, we will not reap the benefits of it. The following scriptures give insight about how obtaining our freedom is connected to committing ourselves to diligently searching the scriptures and carrying out its instructions: Psalm 119:45 (NLT) “I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.” James 1:25 (NIV) “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do”. John 8:31-32 (NLT) “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (AMP) “All Scripture is Godbreathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “I will exalt you, my God the King. I will praise your name forever and ever. Lord, thank you for freedom in my spirit, soul and body. I am grateful that even when I am faced with challenges and problems, I don’t have to be in bondage to anything. I have access through your word to strengthen my soul and an open door to come humbly, but boldly to your throne of grace to receive mercy, guidance, and wisdom to walk in the freedom that you paid for me on the cross. Please help me to remember that nothing is impossible for you. You are bigger than my problems and you have solutions for whatever I am going through. I love you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. know that this wrath has been exhausted upon Jesus Christ so that the full love of God might be exhausted upon us as chosen children. There is no anger left over from God towards those who believe the gospel by faith alone and we can once again experience a relationship with the Creator as it was in the garden – anger free! Ah, it’s such an interesting thought to consider that God gets angry. You might remember even Jesus grew angry at the hypocrisy and disobedience being displayed in one of the holiest of places on earth at the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry. So, we conclude that being angry is not a sin – for Christ was without sin. In fact, scripture clearly teaches us to “…be angry

and sin not.” The purpose of this article is not to get you coiled up so you go out into the world with anger. In fact, the very opposite should be true. The holy Son of God cleaned His house. His literal house: HIS temple. You can be angry when guests dishonor your house. So, what should WE be angry about? After all, Scripture teaches us the human tongue is hard to tame and is often animated by the flames of hell. Often our tongue is controlled by uncontrolled anger within us. We must agree that our typical displays of anger are often born from our flesh and from the evil one who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy just as he did at the garden. Friends, as we celebrate

Lord, grant us, Your children, wisdom to know how to correct the evil in our home, church, and country. But, let us not forget Your mercy over the evil that we so willingly choose. Help me to hate my own sins and love my neighbors who sin differently than me. And, make us ever grateful for the renewed peace we have with You through Christ. this wonderful time of the year, allow me to encourage you with one final challenge. The holy Son of God emptied Himself and became man. He walked with “grace AND truth.” At times we walk with too much truth and do not have enough grace. Other times we show too much grace and not enough truth. I’m reminded of the passage where Jesus looks upon the crowd and has compassion on them. He sighed a deep sigh. You see, the same evil that Adam and Eve had chosen was the same sin that reigned within the people who followed Him. In fact, it was the curse of sin that led to the death of Lazarus where Jesus mourned deeply and cried! So, yes, Jesus became angry. But more often we

As for the food, she noted it is donated by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “We were given 31,782 pounds of food. We served 144 families, which equals 349 people,” Ms. Eaker said. The Mobile Food Pantry has been going on now for two years, Kim noted, adding, “We started the mobile pantry in 2020. Cherryville Area Ministries partners with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and St. John’s Lutheran Church has partnered with us so we may use their parking lot as the

hosting site. This is a group effort that requires time and dedication from all who volunteer.” Eaker said their next Mobile Food Pantry food distribution will be on Monday, July 25, and she also is asking the community to come out and join them on Aug. 13 “…for a morning dedicated to giving to (the) children of the Cherryville community” by their giving out school supplies on that date. Said Ms. Eaker, “The church hosting that event this year is First United Methodist Church, and it will be from 10 a.m., until 12 noon.” St. John’s Lutheran Church is located at 601 N. Pink St., Cherryville, she said, adding for folks to please call Barbara at (704) 435-9264 (at St. John’s Lutheran) in order to register

Law scholar says fight against CRT is one of national survival by DAVID BASS Carolina Journal The fight against Critical Race Theory is nothing less than a battle for national survival, according to Cornell Law School professor William A. Jacobson. Jacobson made his comments during a June 23 luncheon at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. Sponsored by the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, the talk explored the historical roots of CRT, its prevalence in academia and K-12 education, and what to do about it. “If you wanted to rip this country apart, what would you do differently than what they are doing? That’s why it’s a fight for national survival,” said Jacobson, who has served at Cornell since 2007. “(CRT) is setting people against each

uated and went into business law, Jacobson noted, while the more radical students who studied critical legal theory went into academia. “They began to develop theories over 30 years that have resulted in Critical Race Theory, while the rest of us were asleep at the wheel,” Jacobson said. “It is truly astounding how deeply this highly racialized view of the world, this highly racialized view of academics, this highly racialized view of mandatory activism and mandatory training, has become,” he said. “It’s not every place, and it’s called different things at different places, but it’s almost everywhere.” “I can’t think of a single good thing that has been accomplished on the campuses from this obsession with race,” he added. “I think everybody

in this room is against racism. You want people to be treated equally. You want equal opportunity. What’s going on in campus is the opposite of that is. It is stratifying people. It is teaching people that they can’t speak up for fear of being called racist, which can end your career, or the false accusation can end your career. And people are bullied into silence.” As for solutions, Jacobson several ideas. The first is to shine a light on CRT wherever it is and whatever name it goes by. “When people find out about it, there is pushback. And what frightens the people who are advocating this, who are funding this, is that the push back is multiracial, multi-ethnic, and cuts across party lines,” he said. Jacobson’s second recommendation was to exert out-

Jacobson shared his experidational to American history, culture, and government while ence at Harvard Law School in portraying the white race as in- the early 1980s when the push herently oppressive. side pressure on institutions of higher education, principally through the influence of alumni and donors. “The pressure should not be to fire somebody or ban something. The pressure should be to open up the campus,” Jacobson said. “The pressure should be to create a campus atmosphere where alternative views can be heard without people being mobbed, without people being targeted. We need to create that culture of respect that does not exist on many campuses.” A third recommendation centered on cutting of public funding for CRT programs, and a fourth was to fund alternatives on campuses. “Use your donation to try and improve the campus rather than just throw it in there and hope it’s put to good use,” he said.

Cherryville’s Post 100 loses to Queen City Mustangs In Area IV standings, the Cherryville ball club is currently 17-10 overall; 12-2 in the division by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Cherryville’s Post 100 Legion seniors took on the visiting Queen City Mustangs at Fraley Field on Thursday, June 30 and lost to that team by a score of 1-5. In Area IV standings, the Western Division Area IV Cherryville ball club is currently 17-10 overall and 12-2 in division play. Coming into the Thursday night game, the Eastern Division Area IV Mustangs were 14-1 overall and 11-1 in the division. Coach Bob Reynolds utilized the skills of six pitchers in this matchup; a battle of Area IV East and

West leaders, but the Post 100 men were unable to get their bats working for them like they wanted. On the mound as the starter for Coach Reynolds in this non-division game was Zane Brockman, who struck out one batter and walked two. He was followed by Noah Gantt (one strikeout; 2 walks); Taylor Cook, Chase Miller, Noah Huss (one strikeout), and left-hander Colin Huss. The only hit the Post 100 men got for the night was from Jacob Hamrick, who also got an RBI and was walked. Brockman got on base due to an error by the Mustangs while Ashton Pope was walked twice; Joseph Webb got on base twice; Landon Hahn was walked, and Chase Miller was walked. Previously, on June 28 the men beat Henderson in an away game by a score of 6-2. The two originally scheduled games on June

29 and June 30 against Fuquay-Varina were cancelled and the Queen City game was scheduled for June 30 instead. Both Cherryville (No. 1 West) and Queen City (No. 1 East), as the respective leaders in their divisions, received byes for the Area IV playoffs, which started Saturday, July 2 and go through July 6, in a best-offive series. The Area IV quarterfinals are July 8-12 and are a best-of-five series as well. The Area IV semifinals are July 14-20 and are a best-ofseven series; the division’s final (date to be announced) is July 21-23, with the N.C. State Tournament at Campbell, followed by the Southeast Regional Tournament, held at Asheboro. American Legion World Series will be played at Shelby’s Keeter Stadium and it starts Aug. 11. Powell and Danny Eaker) Post 100 starting pitcher against the Queen City Mustangs, Zane Brockman, gets in a final warm-up pitch before the action starts between the two Area IV division leaders. MALE YORKSHIRE TERRIER. J.R. is a very smart, curious, energetic boy! He loves splashing in his pool water before he jumps in! He enjoys the out doors, can do steps, now walks with harness and leash, has been on the grooming table. We are still working on potty training but he’s coming along. Due to the heat and his thick soft cotton fur, we shaved him down to help him stay cool for the summer. His handsome hair cut shows off his muscular physique. He is very stout like his daddy! JR has short legs and a teddy bear face. He is too energetic for older dogs but loves to run and play with the kids! JR is up to date with shots, has been vet checked, dewormed, flea and heart worm treated and comes with his own puppy pack. $800. Serious inquiries only! Call 704692-3698. (704) 692-3698

How to Hire an In-Home Helper for an Aging Parent Dear Savvy Senior, I would like to hire an in-home helper for my 82-year-old mother to assist with household chores like housekeeping, grocery shopping and driving her to the doctor, etc. But mom doesn’t require any personal/physical caregiving, nor does she require any home medical care. Any tips to help us find someone? Searching Sarah Dear Sarah, Getting your mother some help at home to handle some of her day-to-day chores is a smart idea that can make a big difference keeping her independent longer. Here’s are some tips to help you find someone reliable. In-Home Help For seniors who could use some help at home – but don’t need a caregiving aide for personal care – there are homemakers/home helpers you can hire that can help make life a little easier. Most in-home helpers can assist with any number of things like shopping, running errands, transportation, light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, arranging services (home maintenance, lawn care, etc.) and other household chores, along

with providing companionship and support. And, if your mom gets to the point she needs personal/physical care like bathing or dressing, many home helpers can assist with this too.

and they handle everything including assigning appropriately trained and prescreened staff to care for your mother and finding a fill-in on days her helper cannot come.

Most home helpers are part time workers who work a few hours a day or a few days per week.

Some of the drawbacks, however, are that you may not have much input into the selection of the aide, and the helpers may change or alternate, which can cause a disruption.

You also need to know that while Medicare does cover home health care services if a doctor orders it, they do not cover in-home homemaker/helper services. There are two ways in which you can go about hiring someone for your mom; either through a home care agency, or you can hire someone directly on your own. Home Care Agency Hiring a home helper through a non-medical home care, or non-medical companion care agency is the easiest, but most expensive option of the two. Costs typically run anywhere from $15 to $25 an hour depending on where you live. How it works is you pay the company,

To find a home care agency in your area, use search engines like Google or Yahoo and type in “non-medical home care” followed by the city and state your mom lives in. Or you can use Medicare’s home health services search tool at Medicare.gov/care-compare – click on “home health services.” Most home health agencies offer some form of non-medical home care services too. You can also check your local yellow pages under “home health services.” Hiring Directly Hiring a personal assistant/home helper on your own is the other option, and it’s less expensive. Costs typically range between $12 and $20 per hour. Hiring directly also gives you more control over who you hire so you can choose some-

one who you feel is right for your mom. But be aware that if you do hire someone on your own, you become the employer so there’s no agency support to fall back on if a problem occurs or if the assistant doesn’t show up. You’re also responsible for paying payroll taxes and any worker-related injuries that may happen. If you choose this option, make sure you check the person’s references thoroughly and do a criminal background check. To find someone, ask for referrals through friends or you can search online at sites like Care.com or CareLinx.com. For more information on hiring in-home help for your mom, the Family Caregiver Alliance offers a helpful guide that you can access at Caregiver.org/resource/hiring-home-help.
