For those in the county fire services getting needed resources – which can be slim or hard to come by even in the best of times – to the various departments can be daunting, and downright tough on sparse or limited budgets. Looking to solve, or deal better with issues such as this or similar to it, Gaston County, with its many smaller fire departments, worked to resolve things and passed, as of July 1, a budget to resolve these issues. They are currently waiting on their consultant’s final report, noted Gaston County Emergency Management Director Kevin Gordon.Mr.Gordon, in an email to the Eagle, explained in more detail how it all went, going forward.“During the FY 2022 budget process, many of the contracting fire departments requested moderate to large budget increases as various levels of service were being provided across the county by these contracting fire departments,” he said. “County staff evaluated the previously used process and looked around the state for other best practices used by similarly situated counties. Following the FY 2022 budget process it was determined we should evaluate the previously used process to identify gaps and seek areas of improvement. The intent was to provide effective fire and rescue services at the lowest cost possible. We wanted to make sure the contracting fire departments had the equipment, apparatus, and personnel to provide effective fire and rescue services while making sound decisions as related to the total cost of providing fire protection.”Gordoncontinued how See FIRE, 2
CHS Fall Sports teams start drills and getting in shape

by MICHAEL E. POWELL michael@cfmedia.infoEditor The 2022 CHS Fall Sports teams have started their drills and have been getting in some time on the practice fields and in the weight rooms, according to their respective coaches. For 2022, the Ironmen and Lady Ironmen will field six teams and the Ironmen Marching Band will be there to root them on, playing the rousing renditions we have all come to love andHeadappreciate.Ironmen football coach Tim Pruitt has been at the helm of the gridiron squad for a number of years now and has seen a great deal of success, but, as he will always tell anyone who listens, there is always more room for growth, on and off theAsfield.far as the team’s overall skill drills and workouts are concerned, Coach Pruitt said, “The first four days have been great! We have incorporated more conditioning and feel that the players are moving at a high level through their drills.” This is evidenced by the way the young men have been working out and the number of individuals who have come out to try out for the team. Coach Pruitt’s men – both varsity and JV – call Rudisill Stadium their homeAnotherfield. CHS Fall Sports team which has seen a number come out to take part is also one which lost their senior squad from last year – one which had a great impact on the program helmed by head coach Leigh Kiser. Nevertheless, Coach Kiser said she has many returners this year and they all have a great skill set and seem ready, willing, and able to help the newcomers. As for the workouts and drills, Coach Kiser noted, “The workouts this summer have been great. We averaged about 10 people attending to better their game and major improvements happened this summer.”
Kim Eaker, a long-time community volunteer and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, said recently that SJLC, along with other churches in Cherryville, has started the drive to collect school supplies for needy kids.“School will be starting back before we know it,” said Ms. Eaker. “Unfortunately, many children will not have the school supplies that they need to be successful.” For many years now she and other like-minded individuals have endeavored to give back to their community and help kids and their families in one of the best possible ways; provide school supplies – which can be a big cost for many families – to them in order to give them a muchneeded boost as they begin their school year. Said Eaker, “We, as Chr ist followers, are called to take care of each other. If you would like to be a part of this year’s school supplies drive and distribution for Cherryville schools we are collecting now. You can drop off at Home Trust Bank or any of the churches. The actual event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 – 12 p.m., at First United Methodist Church which will be hosting the event this year. The location of the event will rotate each year. This is a community event, and we would like for our entire church body to come together. We Are One. We will also offer free haircuts. Come join us for Praise music with Brian Emerson and Kelly Eaker and free hotdogs from Table of Grace.” She continued, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others (Romans 12:4-5 NIV).”

Once again, all it took was a whole lot of hard work and some very caring and interested and talented individuals to turn a former Cherryville downtown destination into a Main Street work of architectural art. Of course, being able to invest a $1 million-plus into the project certainlyThehelped.building at 116 E. Main St., was built, according to information received from Vickie Spurling Realty, in 1921, making it 101 years old. It is 7,140 square feet in size and now has four apartments upstairs; two two-bedroom apartments, approximately 850 square feet in size, and two one-bedroom apartment/ lofts of approximately 600 square feet in size. All four apartments are actually different sizes, and all are complete with modern appliances. The downstairs space in comprised of one large retail space (1,000 square feet); five smaller spaces for retail or office use, noted Mrs. Spurling, all complimented by a beautiful, shared conference room, kitchen & restroom, she said. On Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022, a group of City of Cherryville staff, Chamber of Commerce staff, Cherryville Main Street staff, as well as representatives of Vickie Spurling Realty, Hoyle Construction, Upland Architecture, and others involved in the restoration of the old building, met inside the old building to essentially christen it and show off the finishedPatrickproject.O’Leary, who has been involved with this and other completed (and future) restoration projects in Cherryville, welcomed everyone and said, “This has been our largest project on Main Street, taking three and half years. We ran into supply chain issues, but we are very proud of the job we have done here. The whole idea here in what we are doing in Cherryville is about rejuvenation, which you cannot have without people. To that end we have been building apartments here in downtown and we now have six so Chamberfar.”

The Lady Ironmen spikers call Nixon Gym their home. For tennis coach Brandon Shull, being able to get back out on the Donna Lavery Courts to train and do their skill drills, especially after COVID-19’s issues, is nothing short of a blessing and a Whilemiracle.he is happy to have the Diaz twins back in net action for him, and he has a couple of returners who know their way around the courts, Coach Shull is always happy to see who is coming up so far as new talent is concerned. As for the ladies’ drill and skill sets and practices, ever the man of few words, Coach Shull noted simply and quietly, “Practices have been going quite well. Practices have focused on different aspects and situations that are part of a tennis match.”Head Cheerleading coach See SPORTS, Page 10

WRECKS 8-1: A vehicle driven by Christy Michelle Burrell, 37, 511 W. 2nd St., Cherryville, and a vehicle driven by Joann Grant Bolding, 55, 121 Red Oak Dr., Cherryville, collided in the parking lot of the Cherryville Food Lion. The responding officer stated that he was dispatched to the accident and upon arrival talked with both drivers. Ms. Burrell said she hit the Bolding vehicle and tried to apologized several times but was getting no good responses from Ms. Bolding, who he noted in his report, was very upset and very concerned about her two grandchildren in the back seat. The R.O. watched a video that Ms. Burrell had from a dash camera which showed the Burrell vehicle going through the lanes of the parking lot looking for a parking space. When the Burrell vehicle entered the lane the Bolding vehicle was in, the R.O. noted he could see Ms. Bolding back out and stop. He then saw the Burrell vehicle drive into the Bolding vehicle w/o braking. He stated he also heard a conversation in the cab of the Bolding vehicle which sounded as if Ms. Burrell was talking to someone. No injuries were reported. FromFIREPage 1 “…there were many who voiced questions and/or concerns with the varying tax rates across the county,” adding, “In FY 2022, the taxes rates varied from 5 cents to 11.9 cents. These various rates were confusing to county staff, elected officials, fire service personnel, and the citizens. By converting to a county-wide fire service district, we would experience a flat or consistent tax rate for fire protection and have the ability to allocate funds in the areas of the most need. Along with this new fire service district, the contracting fire departments will participate in a performance-based contract to governor future expectations of these contracting fire departments to meet the needs of a fast-growing county. Moving forward, we will be better positioned to provide these critical agencies with the resources they need to operate effectively while controlling cost and limiting the fire tax burden for the citizens protected by theseRegardingagencies.”the consultant, Mr. Gordon said, “The County did contract with a consulting firm who specializes in the area of public safety. Soon we will receive the final report which is expected to contain many recommendations to further the improvement of the fire and rescue services provided to the citizens protected by these contracting fire departments. Once this report is received, County staff will meet with the Fire Chiefs to determine how best to address any recommendations. This next review will also prioritize these recommendations to determine which ones will be addressed first and in what order.” Gordon noted he has “… been part of such studies in the past and have seen these recommendations range from a few to 20 or more.” “I worked with and adjoining county, years ago, and that report contained 16 recommendations. The fire service there meet 15 of those recommendations and actually enhanced the last recommendation to yield better results than recommended by the consultant,” he said. “So, this is an effective process which brings about changes that have true meaning for the citizens, county, and the fireDirectordepartments.”Gordon pointed out that a key part of this process “…was to protect the FY 2022 budgeted amounts to each fire department,” adding, “We were committed to making sure nobody lost anything and, if anything, their budgets would increase. All the contracting fire departments saw some level increases in funding for FY 2023. Furthermore, there was one key enhancement which set the minimal funding level at $250,000 for the departments. One fire department fell short of this benchmark in FY 2022 and saw a substantial increase in their annual budget. Their annual budget essentially doubled from FY 2022 to FY 2023. This was a major step for this area of the county as this department has been grossly underfunded for many years.”

In conclusion, Mr. Gordon said (of the county-wide fire service district), “We reviewed several options during the research which led to the final recommendation. After ample research and reviewing many other counties, the county-wide fire service district was the best option. This county-wide fire service district yields the flat tax rate. I expect we will have several key recommendations once the final report is completed and presented to County staff. I’m confident these recommendations will be enacted and this entire process will enhance the county’s fire and rescue services. I’m also confident these best practices will better equip these key agencies with the resources needed to be effective. The key here is to provide the most effective fire protections at the lowest possible tax rate. If we meet these two simple goals, then we all have been successful and efforts will be worthwhile.”

TODAY’S QUOTE: Action is the foundational key to all success. – Pablo Picasso And moving beyond baseball for a minute… it is always great to see some of these young men and women go on further with their sports careers and lives, and what a treat it is to see many of them succeed beyond college and move on into professional sports. My wife and I have had the pleasure of seeing many of them come back to Cherryville and speak to other young men and women whose dreams mirror their own and tell them what to look for; what to watch out for; and how to remain true to yourself despite all the negative aspects of sports that could come their way. A better group of sports ambassadors you will never find than the Cherryville sports guys and gals, at least in mine and my wife’s opinions. So, as we switch from baseball mode to football and other Cherryville sports mode, we want to say, “Thanks for some great baseball games” to all of our players here in Cherryville. Good luck getting back to school and playing other sports of your choice. Stay safe and be blessed! We hope to see all of y’all again next Spring and Summer on the diamonds of Cherryville, the little town where life blossoms!

Losing everything, what or who is important? I have most likely written here tosonswhentoprobablyofnoquicklyisaboutbeforehowtimepassingsowithvisiblesignsslowing.Ireferitfrequentlythesea-beginchange.And since I have certainly spent the majority of my life in a school setting it goes to reason that the passing of summer is leading us to the return of school in session.Thethought of beginning school again actually fills me with good memories. Those memories range all the way from beginning first grade at Tryon School to graduating from the same school. My education continued to Appalachian State University and then to my first teaching job at Elizabeth Elementary in Shelby.Ihave always wanted to be teacher.a No other profession asmemorybackteachTheyoungmyappearedactuallyinmindasaperson.desiretogoesinmyasfarIcango, and I never could see myself being anything other than a teacher. I was blessed to have so many great teachers throughout school. My third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade teachers really stand out in my mind since those are the grades that I have taught. They were Mrs. Rhyne, Mrs. Best, Miss Huss, and Mrs. Wilson. And I will always be grateful to Mrs. Robinson who gave me a great start as my firstgrade teacher. Each of these teachers cared for their students and wanted the best for them, and I will always be grateful for each one of them. It goes without saying also that I still like school. After being retired for some years, I returned to public education as a substitute teacher and a tutor. It still gives me a sense of purpose as a contributing member of society in the field of my choice.Getting back to my topic here of saying goodbye to summer, I have said it before – and it is worth repeating – that summer seems to be getting shorter and shorter. Now in reality we know that is not true, but it does seem that way. I guess it relates to the “time is flying when you’re having fun” statement and time seems to go “faster with age” statement also. At least it seems that way to me.But it has really been a good summer, and I look forward to another great school year and praise God for each and every day He gives me here on earth. by LEWIS WAHA Guest columnist Christians are known for being nice, or at least trying to be. But some reject niceness, saying it’s outmoded. They see a fool’s errand in trying to persuade a culture that has turned decisively hostile against Christians. The case has been well articulated by pastor and professor James Wood. Through essays and other media, he’s advocated against “winsomeness” and in favor of alternative values: courage, clarity, andButresilience.Wood’s campaign sparked an ugly debate at its outset. Journalist David French criticized Wood’s essay “How I Evolved on Tim Keller” as justifying “cruelty and malice.” Podcaster Skye Jethani decried critics of winsomeness as fearful of the broader culture. In return, blogger Rod Dreher identified contemporary Christian niceness as a form of denial and “cowardice.”Such dissension among serious Christians is disappointing but unsurprising. Whatever its merits, Wood’s essay came with tribal baggage. First, its given title implicitly ‘disses’ widely respected evangelist Tim Keller as an old dinosaur See FRIENDSHIP, Page 9 What or who allremindsKentuckyiningdevastat-Thetoimportantisyou?recentfloodeasternusthatlife can be swept away in a moment. Hundreds of families lost everything. One family lost their house and everything in it but lost their family – four children, ages less than two up through eight, were swept away by the raging flood. One woman who had also lost her house and everything in the house stated she and her family were alive and that’s all that mattered.None of us want to lose our houses and everything we’ve worked for most of our lives. However, it’s all junk in comparison to our children and loved ones. From the fires of California to the floods of eastern Kentucky to the devastation of Ukraine by Russia, loss and devastation can come to us all. We don’t want loss. We recoil from natural disasters, invaders or diminishing health. It takes a lifetime to pay for a house. Today, cars are often financed five years and more. People work hard to accumulate a few things. Little children, spouses and aging parents are not easy to come by. Most of the time we take everything we have for granted. When the floods of life literally wash away all that we have and love, the loss is horrific.Wereally don’t know the full extent of how painful loss is until we have lost it all. Recent flood victims in eastern Kentucky essentially lost it all. Many literally escaped with only the shirts on their backs. Cancer can eat away at our lives. Other forms of diminishing health can take us down to nothing. Financial losses can make us miserable. A fire can destroy everything. Life can change and in a Sometimesmoment.we have warnings that life is on the way to changing. When it rains, we don’t automatically think the water will become so deep that we will all drown. Some people in eastern Kentucky will never be able to enjoy a long night of rain because of what it may bring.Overall, people would like to live out their lives quietly and safely. Avoiding floods, fires, and other life-threatening crises, having food to eat, something to wear, and the enjoyment of people we love, are most meaningful to us. In the middle of life’s devastations, we often look to God and ask why? If He really is so great, so good, and so loving then why would He send or allow eight or nine inches of rain to fall on the ‘hollers’ of eastern Kentucky and sweep away little children? Did He go to sleep? Does He not care? Is He detached from what happens in the world? Is He really out there? Yet, as many grieve, they will fall upon God as He is all they have left to get them through. An old saint of God who suffered through the storms of life once said, “I didn’t realize God was all I needed until God was all I Whateverhad.”or whoever you have today, don’t take it or them for granted. Be grateful, give thanks. Love on your loved ones and be kind to all. Consider taking some of your stuff and giving it to someone who may have nothing. It will be good for you both.

talented, long-suffering and uber-dedicated wife helping me out with stats, notes and what not, and my good friend Danny Eaker, and a whole host of coaches and athletic directors and athletic officers, doing the same for my sports illiterate self, I would not be able to do what I do for the this 116-year-old weekly paper. And God knows, it has had way better sports writers in its day than me; the late, great Ronald “Scoop” Kiser (there will never be another) and Mike Powell (no, not me… the better-looking Michael Powell!), just to name a few. Also, I have received much great help from my buddy, Kyle Bennett, and the fantastic Mr. Gary Stewart (on occasion), he of Kings Mountain sports writing fame; as well as super stats man and hugely talented sports writer, Richard Walker. There are so many others I can’t name them all, but hopefully, they all know who they are.And speaking of Cherryville coaches, in the 16 years we have been here, every last one of them have been, and still are, some of the greatest we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with; we just can’t thank them enough for how they help us get the sports news and info on such a great group of student-athletes out to the public. At the end of the day, it really is all about the kids. By Michael Powell michael.cherryvilleeagle@gmail.com

You are to be a witness through your life and through your lips. Each of these traits are vitally important. If your walk does not match your talk, you become a hypocrite who says one thing and does another.

On the other hand, if you have a godly life but you never tell anybody about the One who fills you with His love, bystanders will have difficulty understanding where the power comes from. Our call from Christ is clear, we must shine and share. To do that, you need to know the story. Every Christian should know the gospel story and be able to share it with another person. I know it can be hard to overcome our fears, shyness, and hesitations, but that is why God gives you power through His Holy Spirit. You are not in this alone! As a believer in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you to empower you to fulfill your Kingdom purpose which is to shine for Jesus and share Him with the world. So, my question to you today would be, “Are you shining, and are you sharing Jesus?”
Waco Baptist Church 262 N. Main Street Waco, 704-435-9311NC
Do not miss this biblical promise where the Holy Spirit empowers you to shine for Jesus and share Him with the world. Yes, it is through the promise of Christ that we will be filled and are made capable to shine in this world! Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” And Jesus promises that when He comes into your life, you become the light of the world through His Spirit. When the Holy Spirit lives in your human spirit, His light fills your life. That means you have supernatural power to love and live like you never could before. The Spirit of God is within you and the He is same Spirit through whom Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness. But the Holy Spirit’s power does not just fill you, He propels you to share Christ with others and to be a witness of His spirit. Shining the light of Jesus by your daily living and actions is wonderful, but the gospel requires words.Romans 10:14 puts it this way: “How then are they to call on Him in Whom they have not believed? How are they to believe in Him Whom they have not heard?”

Laser Sharp Focus In the next passage, (See Mark 5:25-34),we find a woman who had a chronic illness for 12 long years. The law prohibited people with her particular illness to be around anyone or touch them. She was a lonely woman who had spent all her money on health interventions that failed her.She was distressed, financially ruined, and very sick. She could have allowed all of the disappointments and her physical weaknessto discourage her from even trying to get to Jesus. Instead, she pressed her way with great faith. As a result she was healed of her issue and made whole. Hebrews 10:36 (NIV) states, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

415 South Mountain Street, Cherryville Fairview Baptist Church Are praying for something, but it seems like it will never happen? In fact, years have passed and nothing has changed in life. What should you do? Most will give up and stop believing. Our heart is crushed when our desires aren’t satisfied, but when our dreams finally come to pass, there is life and joy. I believe we can learn from two women in the bible who had traumatic issues in their lives that left them devastated -but they didn’t stay that way! God’s Purpose Becomes My Purpose Hannah was grieved by her lack of infertility. She refused to eat and often cried. Year after year she would persistently pray to get pregnant. She was even taunted by a woman named Penninah, who made fun of her because of her inability to have children.I Samuel 1:10-11 (NIV) states, “In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life....” God honored Hannah’s prayer and gave her not only a son, but multiple children. The blessing came once Hannah yielded to God’s purpose.Hannah just wanted a son, but God wanted a prophet. Sometimes, our blessing is delayed until we yield to God’s desire for our lives. However, spending time in prayer can cause us to learn God’s desire. Prayer should always be a dialogue, not a monologue.God wants to guide us into his divine purpose as we diligently seek him.

To put it another way, you are to shine for Jesus and share Him with the world. This is what God chose you for, called you to, and equips you to do. You may be wondering just how am I to do this? The answer is through the power of the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gathered His followers and told them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised. Then Jesus said to his disciples in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

local merchandisers. The Cherryville store was originally a partnership with the Matthews family and was the 125th store opened by the Belk organization. In 2016 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as one of 53 contributing buildings that make up The Cherryville Downtown Historic District. An interesting note is that during construction Vickie noted their crews exposed a painted sign on what was originally on the exterior of 114 East Main Street. The sign is dated “1912” and says “JF Carpenter Restaurant”
“We know from photographs that an identical sign was also painted on the West Side of 114 East Main,” she said. See PROPERTY, Page 10
BELK From Page 1 by Susan Eason Caterers, and introduced Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III, who said, after looking around at the beautiful interior of the room in which everyone met, “Here we have what we have long awaited and anticipated – a beautiful building on our Main Street, in Cherryville, where life blossoms.” Mayor Beam then went on to recognize Vickie Spurling Realty for spearheading the town’s building revival and all those construction contractors for all their hard work, as well as everyone who has helped make the Belk restoration project a completed dream comeMaintrue.Street Chairperson Donna Beringer said of the renovation, “It is over the top beautiful! And such a great addition to our downtown. I can’t thank them enough!” Mr. O’Leary noted that he and Vickie worked together to make the Belk building “reno” happen, literally from the inside out. Said O’Leary, “I want to thank everyone, for we received wonderful support, from Brian Dalton and the City staff, the Chamber’s David Day and Mary Beth Tackett, just everyone! Thank you all! We are very excited about the Streetscape Project and can’t wait to see what it’s all going to look like once it is finished.”Patrickalso noted all of the vendors were local people, “Most notably the renovation team headed by General Contractor Hoyle Construction’s Chris Spurling; Project Manager Vickie Spurling of Vickie Spurling Realty; Upland Architects of Shelby’s Mark Patterson (who said he has worked on six projects for Mr. O’Leary and Spurling Realty); Construction Superintendent, Hoyle Construction, Vic Hoyle; Max Baxter Roofing’s Andrew Baxter; Joe Eaker of All American HVAC; Dellinger Electric’s Gary Dellinger; Heath Jackson of Heath Jackson Plumbing; Richard Blanton of Gaston Sprinkler; Logan Stevens of Stevens Interiors (the tin ceilings); Rodney Fredell of R&R Dunrite Floors; Derrick Hoskins of Derrick Hoskins Hardwood Flooring Finish for the second floor work; Brian Francis for the Sheetrock/Firestop work; Geoff Slusser of Unique Audio Video, Cable Communications; Mike Clark of Modern Security (fire system; Donald Alexander of A&A Painting; Chuck Sneed (brick work); Kent Spurling (VSR) for the signage, IT and graphic design; James Lail of Cherryville Signs (photo prints and art; Pam & Hubert McGinnis, McGinnis Furniture; and Jennifer Hoyle for cleaning.Abrief history of the was noted by the many tour guides who led folks throughout the building showing off some of the building’s features. On the wall of the central hall is a copy of the 1914 Sanborn Insurance map which shows the three wooden buildings which stood on the original site of the Belk building. The Belk building was also listed as having been an auto repair garage in 1925. Tour guide Noah Abernethy noted that, according to his guide noted, Belk-Matthews occupied the building and the two adjacent buildings from 1936 to the end of 1998. A Charlotte Observer article from December 1998 noted Belk’s announced the store was closing. The building, a Cherryville landmark, is still affectionately known to everyone in town today as The Belk Belk’sBuilding.wasfounded in 1888 and by the 1990s it had over 300 stores in the South – mostly partnerships with

to evolve beyond. Second, the essay functions as a deconversion story. It rallies members of one tribe based on their shared negative experiences with another. As Wood tells it, he left a tribe of resentful “Kellerites,” who swear by Keller’s “winsome approach” to engaging the culture. By being pleasant and avoiding offending others, they hope to “gain a hearing” for the gospel. But wrongfully, they have extended the imperative to not offend to politics. As a result, they bind the consciences of American Christians who voted for the offensive Donald Trump in 2016.Perhaps Kellerites’ false judgments against their fellow Christians are real and well documented. But charity requires setting aside these “atrocity stories,” as James Davison Hunter might call them. Only then can we grasp a finer point in Wood’s follow up essay, which gestures toward politics as the “prudential pursuit of justice.” He thinks Christians on the center-right could learn from the Christian left because they get “the nature of politics.” As he puts it: “Most Christians on the left are passionate about the pursuit of justice (as they perceive it), and they are not overwrought in concern about how their political actions will help or hinder the reception of the gospel message.” It is sensible enough that, for Wood, passion and the willingness to offend for justice’s sake are essential to politics. What is questionable though is whether the Christian left’s passion and forthrightness are good examples of this. After all, they aren’t major players in American politics. Playing second fiddle to their allies the secular left, they are sheltered from the costs of being offensive or decrying their perceived enemies. By contrast, Christians at the center-right pull much more of their own coalition’s weight; emulating the left’s “passion” would turn off moderate allies who make the difference between electoral victory and defeat. Political prudence then, cuts both ways. One must believe enough in one’s own cause to advocate with verve. But one must also persuade allies who don’t share the same viewpoint or even speak the same political Thislanguage.latter part of political prudence belongs to the ideal of civic friendship. Persuasion is key here. Through it, citizens arrive together at truth and a shared vision of the common good. That vision includes perpetuating “the city” as a unified polity, not splintering it by civil war or civil divorce. And since the bloody wars of religion of the 16th and 17th centuries, civic friends have rejected totalizing victories that would exile the vanquished.Christians and others have taken this modern ideal of tolerance for granted over the course of American history. But we have wavered in recent years, as some are tempted to return the old vision of politics as enmity and total war. To be sure, there really is such a thing as being too nice. But niceness is a strawman, not a serious position. Populists cast their bromides against it, urging people to grow a spine and shake off their denial that the other side is pure evil. Ultimately, rhetoric against niceness diverts us from discussing the common ground we share on Kindnesskindness. always admits of speaking hard truths in love. At the same time, not every effort to avoid offending others is cowardice. As the proverb goes, discretion is the better part of valor. Courage and passion to confront enemies fall short if they are only in service of waging politics as war. The pluralistic reality we find ourselves in requires that we practice the discipline of civic friendship as well. Then we might not just pursue justice but achieve an actual measure of it.

Wendy Holt, whose teams have won many championships for CHS, said the skill drills and such are an ongoing thing for her ladies, noting that, “…CHS decided to take a group of volunteers to the UCA cheer camp at ASU before the season started. This was an optional camp and was open to any eligible current 9-12th grader.
