2021 Legion banquet a great start to Cherryville-hosted State Tournament by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

In preparation for their 2021 NC State Tournament, held here in Cherryville for the second year since the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020, the Post 100 American Legion hosted a June 26, banquet for Area’s I, II, III, and IV, Legion baseball teams and their coaches at Cherryville’s First Baptist Church Christian Outreach Center. Though that tournament is now over, and the winner (Fuquay-Varina) has moved on to the final games before the American Legion World Series, to be played once again in Shelby, N.C., the banquet started the journey for the many young men who attended. On the dais were NC’s American Legion Baseball

Chairman Mark Caudle, along with Area I Commissioner Terry Boyles, Area III Commissioner James Rorie, and Area IV Commissioner Jerry Hudson. Area II Commissioner Rick Zickafoose was unable to attend but sent his apologies. Also in attendance were Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III; NC American Legion Dept. Commander for 2021-2022, Jim Quinlan (of Shelby) and his wife, Linda, who is the NC American Legion Auxiliary Dist. 13 President; Cherryville City Councilwoman Jill Parker-Puett, the NC American Legion Auxiliary Dept. President for 2021-2022, and her husband, Ronnie, who is the Cherryville Squadron 100 Sons of the American Legion Squadron Adjutant; City Councilman Jon Abernathy; and City Manager and Fire Chief Jeff Cash.

County’s public health to provide state-funded $100 COVID-19 vaccination incentive GASTONIA – Starting last Friday, Aug. 6, anyone who gets a COVID-19 vaccine at Gaston County’s Public Health Dept. can get a $100 gift card for their time. The gift cards are funded by the State of North Carolina in an effort to encourage more people to get vaccinated. In addition, anyone who drives an unvaccinated person to get their shot will receive a state-funded $25 gift card. You must be 18 or older to receive the incentive. The incentives are part of the state’s Summer Card program and come as Gaston County Public Health aims

to boost local vaccination rates amid rapidly rising case counts in the community. Currently, 37 percent of Gaston County residents are fully vaccinated and 40 percent are partially vaccinated against the virus. Statewide, 46 percent of the population is vaccinated. What’s good news, said Public Health Director Steve Eaton, is that the vaccines against COVID-19 are showing tremendous protection against the virus. “The simple truth is the vaccines work,” Eaton said. “We are excited to be able to offer the incentive provided by the state in an effort to See COVID-19, Page 9

Players from all four Area teams came and got to meet each other and see what sort of opposition they were up against. Mostly though it was it was the ability to share a good meal together and listen to their coaches talk baseball and meet some of the older Legion men and members who were once where they would soon be – on the Cherryville Fraley Field baseball diamond, rapping out hits and scoring runs. Post 100 Athletic Director Ned Yates introduced everyone, including the Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner, pastor of the host church, First Baptist of Cherryville, who said a prayer for all of the young men and their coaches, adding later, “It’s exciting for you all to be here in Cherryville. We are glad to see you.” Yates also noted the presence of the POW-MIA

JCMS seeks help in making school’s gardens grow again Principal wants to beautify student’s outdoor learning areas by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Chavis Middle School Principal Matt Rikard and others have been hard at work to redo and remake two on-campus gardens beautiful and useful again for his students. When asked about the work, Rikard said, “The courtyard areas were in rough shape when I was appointed principal this past school year. Through working with Gaston County Schools and talking with students and teachers, the idea of converting them to outdoor classrooms and outdoor eating areas seemed like the best use

for the space. Increasing usable space within the building is a great idea any time, but seems especially important given the circumstances that everyone has been dealing with over the past year.” Rikard said a few big changes will take place with the gardens, hopefully before school starts. Here’s a bit of what he has in mind, noting, “The smaller of the courtyards will be converted to all concrete. We hope to add tables where students can hold class and eat lunch in an outside setting. The larger of the courtyards will be leveled and rocks will be added. We would also like to add seating to this area as well to serve as outdoor classrooms and outdoor eating areas. “Our goal is for the larger courtyard to also contain See JCMS, Page 6

Cooper announces vaccination pressure campaign, no new Midyear fundraising numbers offer mask mandate clues about the 2022 political battles by JEFF MOORE Carolina Journal

Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Thursday, July 29, that, although statewide mask mandates will still expire July 30, according to recent guidance, his administration is launching vaccina-

tion verification requirements for Cabinet agencies and a general campaign to pressure other government entities and private businesses toward similar vaccination requirements. “This virus is now much more contagious and spreading fast, and it will find you if you’re not vaccinated,” Cooper stated to lead off his latest COVID-19 media briefing. Carolina Journal recently reported on the second quarter federal fundraising numbers for declared U.S. Senate candidates in North Carolina. However, the U.S. Senate race is just one of three big prizes up for grabs in North Carolina in 2022, with another being the battle to control the General Assembly. Democrats hope to cut into the Republicans’ healthy ma-

jorities in both chambers, while Republicans hope to pick up three seats in the House and two in the Senate. That would give the GOP three-fifths supermajorities in both chambers, enough to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes and enact a full GOP legislative agenda. The third challenge would be winning control of North Carolina’s highest court. So halfway through 2021, where do See FUNDRAISING, Page 5

have an enjoyable experience here and we urge all of you to forge new friendships that will last a lifetime. And, we wish the winner good luck as they advance,” he said. Mayor Beam introduced Post 100’s Head Coach, Bobby Reynolds, the winningest coach in the AL. Coach Reynolds demurred, taking the mic and adding, “I am just a head coach.” He continued by reminding his peers, contemporaries, and all the players gathered that day that “…we are all in the kid business.” Coach Reynolds, who has been coaching since 1987, talked about what an honor it is to be able to make a difference in some young person’s life by being good mentors and role models. Upcoming Events at Your Cherryville Branch Library by TRACI POLLITT Manager – Cherryville Branch Library

Upcoming Events at Your Cherryville Branch Library: Outdoor Storytime at First United Methodist Church – Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.; Teen Anime Club – Thursday, Aug. 12, at 4 p.m.; and Hooks, Needles & Thread – Friday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. Now, that said… can you believe that school classes will begin in less than two weeks? As the summer winds down, we want to remind patrons participating in Summer Reading to get those records back to us! Not only do we still have plenty of incentives left, bringing your record back is the best way to be entered into the grand prize drawings. We wanted to wait to mention what those prizes are, as we love to believe the joy of reading is all the motivation a person needs. Just in case that is not enough, how about the opportunity to win a Fur Real Friend? Or a Builda-Bear gift card? There’s a 3D Doodler Pen up for grabs, as well as a pair of binoculars just for kids. Looking

for something for the whole family? Kids turning in their reading records might win their family a year-long Family Pass to the North Carolina Zoo. Teens have a chance to win a Nintendo Switch Lite, a Fujifilm Instax Camera, or a Target gift card. And we can’t leave out the adults! Grand prizes for our grownups include an Amazon Cube, a bird-watching themed gift basket, and a one-year membership to our own Schiele Museum of Natural History. So many great prizes! Reading records can be turned in through Saturday, Aug. 21. For those that have been enjoying magazines on the NC Digital Library, we have sad news. As of Aug. 10, digital magazines are no longer available on the NCDL. However, a wide variety of magazines and newspapers are available to download for free from NC Live – and all you need is your library card! You can access NC Live from the GCPL homepage at www. gastonlibrary.org, or you go to the page directly at https:// www.nclive.org. You will be prompted to sign in with your library card number. Once you are on the

NC Live homepage, you will see the “Search & Find” bar right at the top. Click on the first circle that says ‘Articles’ and when the next screen appears, you’ll see a dark purple bar with the phrase “Looking for a specific journal, magazine, or newspaper?” Click the link “Browse all publications” and you’ll be taken to the next screen. At this point, the “Journals Only” category should have a black dot beside it. You are now ready to search for your magazine, either by typing in a title in the search bar, or by selecting an alphabetical list or subject matter. Please note, these are magazine articles, not the full magazine experience that was available through Overdrive. You will need to click on each article separately, and some may not have the full text of the article. However, you can easily choose to print an article, save it to your computer, and more. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to call us. We’ll do our best to walk you through this new process. Our last curbside Fun Packs will be out starting Monday, Aug. 16. Gaston College Licensed Practical Nursing students who graduated at a pinning ceremony on Tuesday, August 3, have something more to celebrate. PracticalNursing.org, the leading LPN advancement and ranking agency, gave the College’s LPN program its top ranking in North Carolina for 2021. The organization ranked the top 10 programs after analyzing 39 nursing schools

in the state, and, based on National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing first-time passage rates over the past several years, the Gaston College LPN program came out in first place. In 2020, the Practical Nursing class had a 100 percent NCLEX-PN pass rate. The average statewide pass rate was 88.9 percent. Forty-five Practical Nursing students were honored at the pinning ceremony which marked their completion of the program. Some of these graduates will be taking the licensure exam beginning next week and can begin working as Licensed Practical Nurses upon passing the exam.

“Having our program receive top ranking is a reflection of our dedicated faculty and staff and our hard-working students,” said Dr. Allison Abernathy, Dean of Health and Human Services. “We couldn’t be prouder of them, and we’re sure our class of 2021 graduates will go on to outstanding careers in their profession.” Gaston College Nursing programs are nationally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Individuals interested in additional information about the programs should contact the Admissions Specialist for Nursing Programs at (704) 922-6469, or (704) 748-5221.

TODAY’S QUOTE:

OPINION

Have the humility to learn from those around you. –John C. Maxwell

All passengers on this great blue orb deserve a chance at life! A friend of mine who works here in Cherryville recently noted that school starts for all of our kiddies, small and big, in almost two weeks (Aug. 23). I sort of laughed nervously and said, “Well, duh! Of course, it does!”, not really grasping the import of the words coming out of my mouth. School. Starts. In less than two weeks! Say what?! My wife and I have been so wrapped up with trying to cover Post 100 Legion ball and their run to having a place in the American Legion World Series that we completely let the start of the 2021 Gaston County School year slip up on us. This is especially disconcerting because my wife works for Gaston County Schools at Bessemer City High (She’s reading this over my shoulder as I write it and poking me, saying, “Don’t blame your memory loss on me, oldster!”). With the advent on the scene of the Delta

Variant of COVID, it appears some school kids could be heading back to the bad old days of masking up if we don’t remain vigilant and get our vaccinations. I know there are many who either don’t believe in them, or don’t trust them or the government who is touting their use, but it seems that all of the new cases are among the unvaccinated, or so the mainstream media are telling us. I have even had some tell me they did get vaccinated and still came down with COVID-19 symptoms, but are still around, alive

and kicking. I don’t have an answer to such; all I know is that in our family we have had both of our shots and so far, so good. That’s not to say that a booster form of the “vax” might be in order somewhere down the road, but we’ll just have to wait and see. All I’m saying is that, if the science has proven – generally speaking – that the vaccine does work and isn’t the horrible “boogey-man” many think it is, and it is FREE, then what is the bloody hold up, all you holdouts? I mean, this getting (or not getting) the vaccine deal shouldn’t be a political football or boondoggle that can be bandied about, because that, to me, seems to be putting way too many lives at risk, no matter your political leanings and persuasions. This is, as things progress medically, truly an “ALL Lives Matter” thing at the end of the day, since we all have to live together on

this planet we call home, no matter our color or politics or religion. I guess getting vaccinated boils down to matters of trust and who do you believe. As my retired police officer friend always says, “Here’s my thing…”, and it is this: If taking the vaccine was the ONLY way available to keep you

and your loved ones alive and healthy, would you do it? Not COULD, but WOULD you? I think the way you answer that in the privacy of your own heart says a lot about your priorities in life. Remember folks… you and yours are not the only passengers on this great blue orb hurtling through the solar system;

there are others; so many others, and they each deserve their chance at having a safe, healthy, long and good life. Don’t be like the cartoon character in the “Pogo” strip of long ago and have to say, based on a poorly thought out medical decision, “We has met the enemy and they is US!”

time around. You may have a business failure. This happens to a lot of people. This doesn’t mean your business efforts will fail in the future. Hopefully you learned from your first efforts and can avoid the same mistakes again in your next endeavor. Possibly you tried a lifestyle that did not work out for you. Maybe you abused alcohol or even drugs or pursued a negative lifestyle that greatly diminished your life to the point where your life seemed hopeless. This doesn’t mean you have to stay this way. With a dedicated decision and often help from others you can turn your life around and do better. We can learn from mistakes. They are educational and usually expensive. They set us back in life. They aren’t fun and can be tormenting. Remember, you can’t live in the past. Don’t totally forget what past failure did to you because you don’t want to repeat your mistakes. However, the past is over. Live your life forward. As you go forward there are easier ways to

learn. Study the lives of others. Research what they did and read. People all around us are either succeeding, failing or at least stable. Study others whose lives intrigue or impress you. Study their careers, work ethic, their values and how they make them work to achieve the life they are living. You can learn a lot by observing and studying others. You can also learn from the failures of others. What were some of their obvious mistakes? Volunteering or taking an entry level job with someone you would like to emulate is a great way to learn their success principles. There are cases where nothing seems to make sense. Life is not always fair. We all have different interests, physical abilities, backgrounds and lifelong developed skills. Take all these into consideration and bring them together to work for you. Success always has new twists, turns and innovative ways. However, they are not accomplished without some form of life learning, commitment and hard work.

FUNDRAISING From Page 1 the major players stand? State campaign finance reports for the first half of the year are now being reported to the State Board of Elections. State political parties Republican: The Democrat and Republican parties are the backbones of legislative elections. They handle critical get-out-the-vote operations, messaging, candidate recruitment, and persuasion. Each political party has distinct operations for their state House and Senate campaigns that are housed in each political party. However, these operations are semi-independently, keeping their own segregated bank accounts used only for legislative campaigns. The state Republican Party reports $508,000 cash on hand in its state account. It previously reported $642,000 in its federal account for total cash on hand through June of $1,150,000. Of that, $280,000 has been raised for Republican House campaigns and $100,000 for Republican Senate campaigns. Democrats: The Democratic Party reported raising $995,000 with $740,000 cash on hand in its state account. It previously reported $ $998,000 net cash in its federal account for total cash on hand through June of $1,690,000. Of that, $35,000 has been raised for Democrat House campaigns and $188,000 for Democrat Senate campaigns. At this same point two years ago, Democrats had $799,000 cash on hand in its state account and considerably more in its legislative accounts. In 2019, mid-year Senate Democrats had $336,000 cash on hand and $277,000 cash in its House account. Legislative leaders: The majority and minority leaders in each legislative chamber serve as the top fundraisers for their political parties’ legislative campaign efforts. Little of the money they raise is used in their own legislative campaigns. Most is sent to the state political parties or directly to other legislative candidates in key races. As he usually does, Republican Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, is leading all legislative fundraising. Berger reports raising $385,000 in the first part of this year and reports $395,000 cash on hand. Sen Brent Jackson, R-Sampson, reported raising $130,000 with $303,000 cash on hand. Sen. Jim Perry, R-Wayne, reported raising $90,000 with $177,000 cash on hand. A spokesperson for the Republican state Senate campaign efforts tells CJ that individually and through joint campaign accounts it has $1.6 million cash on hand, nearly double that they had at this time two years ago. Also, Senate Republicans collected a $10,000 legal settlement from 2020 Senate District 24 Democratic Candidate J.D. Wooten.

Senate minority leader, Democrat Dan Blue, D-Wake, reported raising $12,500 and reports $50,000 cash on hand. House Speaker Rep. Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, reported raising $193,000 and reports $171,000 cash on hand. In his first six months leading Democrats in the statehouse, Rep. Robert Reives, D-Chatham, reported raising only $7,500 and $45,000 cash on hand but spent nearly three times more than he raised. Deputy Democratic Leader, Rep. Gale Adcock, D-Wake, did better for the Democrats. She reported raising $32,000 with $74,000 cash on hand. Other top house fundraisers include House Conference Chair John Szoka, R-Cumberland, $103,000 with $100,000 cash on hand. House Majority Leader John Bell, R-Wayne, has $60,000 and $80,000 cash on hand. And in a major surprise for Republicans, first term Wake County freshman Erin Pare, R-Wake, was one of the top fundraisers with $ 101,000 raised, $84,000 cash on hand. “I am very thankful for the outpouring of support I have received these first six months Pare told CJ. “My team set a high goal and we surpassed it, thanks to supporters in District 37 and across Wake County. I’m proud of the work we have accomplished thus far this session for the people of North Carolina. Spending time talking with donors these first six months has shown me that businessmen and women of this state believe we are on the right track.” House Deputy Conference Chair Rep. Jason Saine, R-Lincoln, reported raising $19,000, and $64,000 cash on hand. Cooper, who has likely seen his last campaign and is using his fundraising ability to help legislative candidates, reported raising $ 177,000 and reports $113,000 cash on hand. Carolina Journal recently presented an update on the battle for the N.C. Supreme Court in 2022. The Democrats’ 4-3 majority on the state Supreme Court is at risk in 2022, as two seats will be up, and both are currently held by Democrats. Republicans only need to capture one of the two to give Chief Justice Paul Newby, a Republican, a 4-3 GOP majority. Democratic Associate Justice Sam Ervin IV must defend his seat in 2022, and he has already announced plans to run again. He tops all judicial fundraising with $185,000 raised during the first half of 2021. He shows $162,000 cash on hand. Democratic Associate Justice Robin Hudson faces mandatory retirement in early 2024 because of her age, leaving her seat open. State campaign reports show no active campaign account or fundraising by her. Democrat N.C. Appeals Court Judge Lucy Inman is aggressively campaigning for the expected open seat on the Supreme Court. Inman announced her intention to run again shortly after being See FUNDRAISING, Page 9

harm than a ‘no’. In this John text, Jesus says no to a large crowd. What is striking in my mind about the way John depicts the feeding of the five thousand, is that, unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, who say that the feeding is because of the hunger of the crowd, John says the crowd forms around Jesus because they want to see signs. John locates the miraculous feeding against the backdrop of the Passover, which happens right after Jesus goes into town and flips over the tables of the money changers. Folks are feeling Jesus out, they are inspecting Him, they want to see if He has what it takes to be the Messiah, to be the One who will lead Israel into the Kingdom of God. They have seen His healing, they

have heard Him speak, but as soon as He feeds all them folks with only five loaves and two fish, everybody and their brother says, “That’s it, this is the Man; this is the Messiah!” And the crowd tries to capture Jesus so that they can make Him a king. Now, from the world’s perspective this is a great thing, who in their right mind doesn’t want to be a king? Thrones are to be sought after, not run from! Why would Jesus decide at the height of His popularity that now was the time to give an emphatic ‘no’ to a very enthusiastic crowd? Well, I believe it is because we as people don’t always know what is best for us. Oh, don’t get me wrong, we are convinced that we do, but very often we are incorrect.

If I let my kids eat cookies and drink Coke all day long that doesn’t set them up for success in life, rather it hinders their growth. In the same way if Jesus gave into the crowds’ incessant demands here, and became their king He couldn’t lead them to the path of eternal life. The crowd here was only in it for the show, they were thankful that their bellies were full, but they didn’t yet understand that Jesus came to fill them with more than food; Jesus came to fill them with the Holy Spirit, Jesus came to fill them with life, Jesus came to fill them with salvation. They saw Jesus as a means to an end, not as the start of a new way of life. In the same way, we can become convinced in our walks of faith that our

highest calling is to get God to bless the paths we are already taking, instead of listening for the places where God might just be telling us ‘no.’ Instead of pushing forward perhaps we would benefit from stopping for a second and listening, trusting that just as when a parent delivers a ‘no’ to a child it isn’t intended to harm rather it is intended to build up. As you move into the month of August may you listen close for the prompting of the Holy Spirit so that you may find the paths God is leading you down. For, just as we see in the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John, even when God tell us ‘no’ it is so that He can lead us on the paths that lead to life.

We feel that these areas will benefit students now, and for years to come. “With that being said, the next step is to attain the

CHS’ Harrill receives Region 6 AD Excellence award by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

Gaston County Schools’ Athletic Director Chad Duncan congratulated Cherryville High School Athletic Director Scott Harrill recently on his being awarded the Region 6 Athletic Director of Excellence Award.

In a media release Mr. Duncan noted that on Monday, July 19, the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association held their Awards Luncheon and presented worthy individuals with awards signifying their many contributions to their schools and the state-wide program. He noted it was his hope,

“…all of you will want to become a part of to help with your professional development in this business.” To that end he congratulated the following individuals in Region 6: Coach Harrill – Athletic Director of Excellence Award; Ryan Resendez – Citation Award; and Steve Gardner – Braveheart Award.

About Coach Harrill, Duncan said, “We are obviously very proud of Coach Harrill and what he has meant to Cherryville athletics and to Gaston County Schools.” Coach Harrill said, “It was an honor to receive the award and was a total shock. It was my first state wide athletic director award. I have been taking leadership, finance, Title IX, and other classes to help me as an athletic director. I feel like you are never too old to stop learning, no matter the job you are in. I value the relationships with other Athletic Director’s around the state of North Carolina, and enjoy collaborating with them.” He continued, “It is very time consuming, but (is) something I enjoy. I could not imagine just being the athletic director and not being directly involved in coaching. Coaching has always been a love and passion of mine.” As far as what the award means to him and others who watch the work he does at CHS, he said, “I think it shows that other Athletic Directors across the state have seen what we have tried to do here at CHS to make things the best they can be. I find it a blessing and a ministry in leading coaches and student athletes. What a privilege to know your peers think that much of you to select you in that area.” In talking about the organization giving him the award, Harrill noted, “The NCADA is a great organization that really tries to promote student-based athletic education. Working along with them and the NCHSAA has been a wonderful experience.” Additionally, Coach Harrill being the man he is, always looks to spread the honors out as much as possible, saying he owes

CHS Athletic Director Scott Harrill and wife Teresa at the NCADA meeting where he was presented with his Region 6 Athletic Director of Excellence Award. (photo provided) so many people credit for his growth and helping him going forward in his career. One of those is his former principal at CHS, Kevin Doran, who recently moved to guide the staff, faculty and students at Cramer Middle School. “My former principal Kevin Doran has always been a great supporter of me working with others around the state. I have met with new principal Shawn Hubers several times and he is an athletic-minded principal as well. I look forward to some great years of learning from him and watching our Ironmen grow to new levels. It is a blessing every day to be called Coach! Besides the name Dad, the next greatest title is 'Coach’,” he said, adding one of his many favorite quotes that help

guide him daily, “The Rev. Billy Graham words still ring true today – 'A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime’.” Current CHS Principal Shawn Hubers had this to say about the long-time Ironmen head basketball coach, “Coach Harrill has just done an amazing job as our athletic director at Cherryville High School. In my short time here I have already seen his dedication to our athletic program. He is up early mowing ball fields and he is always available for our coaches and student athletes. Coach Harrill is the standard of what a great athletic director should look like, and we are blessed to have him at CHS!”

first time since April. The Series will visit three tracks in three states, starting with a return to Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC, for the rescheduled Rock Gault Memorial on Thursday, Sept. 2. Some of the top names in Late Model racing are expected to battle for the $40,000 prize, including Brandon Sheppard and Jimmy Owens, who won split-field 25-lap Features in March. Sheppard’s win came on a thrilling last-lap pass when the New Berlin, IL driver powered around Dale McDowell on the outside of Turn 2. Previous Cherokee Speedway Winners are: 2021– Jimmy Owens and Brandon Sheppard on Mar. 26; 2020 – Brandon Overton on Oct. 2; 2019- Ross Bailes on May 3; Brandon Overton on Oct. 4; 2018 – Mike Marlar on May 4; and in 2017 – Shane Clanton on May 5. The Most Powerful Late Models on the Planet move further South on Friday, Sept. 3, to visit Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA. It’s the fifth trip to the 3/8mile track, as the Series will run a 40-lap, $10,000-towin Feature. Last season fans were treated to an epic finish as Brandon Overton traded the lead with Dennis Erb Jr. for his then third victory of the season. There have been four different winners in four appearances at the speedway. Previous Lavonia Speedway Winners are: 2020 – Brandon Overton on Sep. 4; 2019 – Chris Madden on Oct. 3; 2018 – Brandon Sheppard on May 3; and in

Dirt track drivers pushing their vehicles to the limits. (photo by Richard Barnes) 2014 – Darrell Lanigan on May 3. The final stop of the weekend is a return to Tennessee for the third time this season and a visit to Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN. A $10,000 top prize will be on the line once again in a 40-lap Morton Buildings Feature. The Series made two stops at the track in 2020 as Brandon Sheppard and Zach Mitchell each found Victory Lane. Mitchell’s win was his first career World of Outlaws triumph; as the Enoree, SC, driver held off challenges from veteran driver Dale McDowell to score the upset win. Previous Volunteer Speedway Winners are: 2020 – Brandon Sheppard on June 19 and Zack Mitchell on June 20; 2018 – Jimmy Owens on June 2; 2008 – Shane Clanton on Aug. 21, and Jimmy Owens on Aug. 20; 2007 – Steve Francis on Oct. 13, and Chris Madden on Aug. 23;

and 2004 – Brian Birkhofer on March 27, Past success at all three tracks leaves Chris Madden excited to return to the South. The only venue “Smokey” hasn’t won a World of Outlaws event at is Cherokee, but he has 27 total wins at the track in total. He found Victory Lane at the South Carolina track earlier this year with the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series, leading him to his second consecutive championship. The Gray Court, SC, driver is tied with Brandon Sheppard for the most wins in 2021 (4) and is second in the Series standings – 88 points behind the “Rocket Shepp.” Sheppard’s points lead is another step up the mountain toward World of Outlaws history. The three-time and defending champion is one Series title away from matching Josh Richards for the most championships (4). The New Berlin, IL,

driver is also a win away from tying Darrell Lanigan for second all-time (74) and five wins away from joining Richards at the top of that list (78). Madden and Sheppard both must contend with Brandon Overton, whose crown jewel success in 2021 may go unmatched. “Big Sexy” already has three World of Outlaws wins in 2021, including the $30,000 payday from the Firecracker 100 in June. He’s also beat the best Late Model racing has to offer at Eldora, where he won $273,000 at the Dirt Late Model Dreams. Along with the rest of the World of Outlaws tour regulars, those three drivers must also contend with a wide field of regional competitors who always have a shot to reach Victory Lane when the Series moves South. defeated by fellow Court of Appeals Judge Phil Berger Jr. in 2020 for an open seat on the state’s highest court. Berger defeated Inman 51 percent to 49 percent, a margin of 71,517 votes. As reported by CJ, Inman held a high-dollar fundraiser on June 30. Inman reported raising $100,000 during the first half of this year. Overall, Inman reports $171,000 cash on hand. Inman is expected to face fellow Appeals Court Judge Rich Dietz, a Republican, who raised $106,000 this year and shows $101,000 cash on hand. For the right to meet Ervin, Republicans will likely have a primary contest. This spring, newly seated Republican state Appeals Court Judge April Wood, announced she would seek to move up to the state Supreme Court in 2022. The third Republican running for state Supreme Court is Trey Allen, a UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government

Gov. Roy Cooper in press conference on July 29, 2021 at the N.C. Emergency Management Operations Center in Raleigh. (photo by Maya Reagan, Carolina Journal) professor and general counsel at the Administrative Office of the Courts. He is Newby’s former clerk, who won a 2020 election to become the current chief justice. Allen reports $124,000 raised, with $112,000 cash on hand. Wood, who appears to have only begun fundraising in May, reports raising $35,000 with a total of $47,000 cash on hand. All the judicial candidates have serious fundraising work to do to try and impact

their race. Keep in mind, one week of statewide broadcast television in North Carolina will cost these candidates $700,000 to $1 million. Eye on 2024 Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson are both expected to throw their hat into the ring for the open 2024 governor’s race. Stein reported raising $809,000 with $1,038,000 cash on hand.

Robinson had an impressive first half of 2021, raising $500,000 from more than 4,000 donations. Robinson reports $364,000 cash on hand. It appears Republican legislative efforts are ahead of where they were two years ago at this point. Democrats appear to be slightly behind where they were. N.C. Democrats were flush with cash in 2020 up and down the ballot, but their legislative efforts failed in a year traditionally
