2022 school supplies drive at First United Methodist big success
Last Saturday’s collection of school supplies-filled backpacks went pretty quickly, according to the event’s organizers and they were thrilled to see so many kids, their parents, grandparents, and others come by for the backpacks, as well as the free haircuts and the Table of Grace food. And did we mention the live Christian music provided by Brian Emerson and Kelly Eaker? That was outstanding as Tentswell!were set up on the front parking area of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, the host church for this year’s giveaway, and each grade level had backpacks chock-full of the needed and grade-appropriate materials kids need to get off on the right foot their first day of school. From K through 12, every grade level was represented, with even a table full of generic backpacks there just in case more than those registered came by in need of supplies. Chrystal Harmon and son Seth, 9, manned the kindergarten and first and grade table, along with Kathy Beam and daughter Anna Kathryn (6). Chrystal said several kids had come through that morning, adding that it “…all was going good.”Second grade teacher Kelly Brown was at the second and third grade table with Gaston School Board representative from Cherryville, Beverly “Robbie” Lovelace and Dawn Moss. They agreed with Chrystal it was all “going good”, adding also that the crowds wereSaid“steady”.Mrs.Brown, “Everybody has everything they need to level the playing See DRIVE, Page 6

by MICHAEL E. POWELL michael@cfmedia.infoEditor At last Monday night’s, Aug. 8 city council meeting the main theme of the meeting had to do with pubic hearings on three rezoning issues and an annexation issue, all brought to council’s attention and explained by Planning and Zoning Director Alex Blackburn. After approving the night’s agenda, councilwoman Jill Parker-Puett made a motion they approve all the listed previous council regular and work sessions (from June and July). The motion was seconded by councilman Jon Abernethy and all approved the motion.Next up came Mayor H.L. Beam’s comments and he noted there has been work done to correct the volume and sound on the city’s social media sites. He also spoke to water plant issues that had come up (dirty water, etc.), adding that said issues were why the city entered into an interconnect agreement with Lincoln County and why those interconnects are so important. Mayor Beam noted that he and some council members were present at the recent Main Street kick-off and the opening of the newly renovated Belk Building. “The work done by Mr. Patrick O’Leary and all the contractors involved on the job has made it a great asset to our downtown,” said Mayor Beam. Mayor Beam also reminded all present that the city has received the second round of ARPA money, to the tune of $967,000, adding that it will be a great help to what is needing to be done to the upcoming Westgate Park project. There were some citizens who signed up to be heard regarding the most important sections of the Monday meeting, namely discussions on the three rezoning issues and the one annexation issue brought before theAftercouncil.going into public hearing, Planning and Zoning Director Alex Blackburn came to the lectern and addressed the first zoning issue; that of rezoning property located on Requa Road from R-40, R-15 and R-12 to R-9 cluster development. The 18 parcels of property in question are to be developed by Robert Johnson Properties, noted Mr. Blackburn. The total lots to be developed is roughly 504 lots. It was also noted there is a grave located on the property, and that must be taken into consideration as well, before any work is done. Blackburn did note to council that most of those he has spoken with about the rezoning have told him they are against it, again voicing their concerns about densityMayorissues. Beam said he is curious to see what the traffic analysis will be as the rezoning and ensuing construction is going to put a lot of traffic on the road in question. Citizens who spoke out against the issue were Mr. Johnny Johnson and the Rev. Jerry Lail, among others, who each one noted the problems in the past with flooding in the area, as well as the traffic problems that could ensue. One of the main problems mentioned is that of child and pedestrian safety as many people walk on the road to and from school. Reverend Lail asked council if the issue was “a done deal,” to which they and Mr. Blackburn replied “no.”Mr. Johnson told council the project isn’t going to “happen quickly” and that it is going to be “seven years”, adding that DOT isn’t going to let anything detrimentalCouncilmanhappen.Jon Abernethy moved to continue the discussion at the council’s next regular meeting on Sept. 12. Councilman Gary Freeman seconded his motion, and council approved moving it to the September regular session date. The public hearing on this rezoning issue is still open due to this moving it to another session. In the annexation discussion, Mr. Blackburn noted the two parcels of land in question and the portion of another, are currently in the city’s ETJ. The other rezoning issues were discussed and council moved to continue, along with the annexations’ discussion, to further talk about them at the Sept. 12 regular meeting. Antioch Methodist Homecoming is Sunday, Aug. 28 with former members, friends and relatives of Antioch Methodist Church, in Crouse, N.C. all invited to the annual homecoming that Sunday. Antioch closed 58 years ago but each year many former members and descendants come to the little country church located off Hwy. 150 in Crouse. Come early to enjoy some special music and stay for the worship service at 11 a.m. with guest speaker Rev. Jerry Lail. A covered dish meal will follow in the arbor with a business session afterwards in the church (In case of inclement weather the meal and business meeting will be held at Crouse United Methodist Church).During the Worship Service a special love offering for the Building and Cemetery Fund will be taken. Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement would like to request help from the community. The animal shelter has confirmed positive cases of Feline Panleukopenia in our cat population and Canine Parvovirus in the dog population. At this point, the spread of these viruses is isolated to certain areas of the shelter. However, these viruses are highly contagious. The suggested protocol to control the spread of these viruses inside the shelter, is for Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement to partially suspend animal intake at the shelter. During this period, our exposed cat and dog populations will be isolated and monitored closely for any clinical signs of the virus.
The 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has denied a motion from two Democratic groups that tried to block the Green Party from appearing on the N.C. general election ballot. The decision paves the way for Green Party candidate Matthew Hoh to compete in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race. The Appeals Court announced its decision Thursday with a two-sentence order. Unless the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and N.C. Democratic Party appeal successfully to the U.S. Supreme Court, Hoh and Michael Trudeau, a Green Party state Senate candidate, will appear on the November ballot. But according to Hoh and Green Party attorney Oliver Hall, who both spoke to Carolina Journal after the decision, they believe this is almost certainly the end of the Democrats' legitimate options for keeping them from the Askedballot.ifthis was finally the moment they could breathe easy that NCGP candidates were on the ballot, Hall said, “That appears to be the case,” and Hoh said, “Yes, that’s how we see it.” “I can’t say what the Democrats might try to do next, but as I’ve been saying for days, they’re running out of time and they’re running out of options,” Hall added. “And I think we’ve reached the right outcome of this case. Matthew Hoh and Michael Trudeau earned their place on the ballot. They deserve to be there. And they have a constitutional right to be there. And I believe this should be the end of the line for the NowDemocrats.”thatthebattle appears to be over, Hoh said he can put the months-long fight to get on the ballot aside and start campaigning in earnest. “I’m looking forward to doing what we started out to do, running a campaign that is apart from the campaigns of Democrats and Republicans, a campaign that’s for working families,” Hoh said. “So, I’m looking forward to finally being able to do that. It’s been months of having to fight for our rightful spot on the ballot and now that we have it, we’re going to make full use of that. We’re going to continue to show why multi-party democracy is needed, as well as other options for the voters of North Carolina.”AndHoh had a message for the N.C. Democratic Party, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and the Elias Law Group. “I would say, if they put just a margin of the effort that they put into keeping my campaign and the North Carolina Green Party out towards actually helping the people of North Carolina, it would make all the difference in the world for millions of people,” Hoh said. “But they’re more concerned with taking care of their own power and their own interests than they are in helping their own constituency and this is why people are sick and tired of the Matthew Hoh, N.C. Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate. (photo by Carolina Journal) two-party system, they’re sick and tired of both major parties. They want third parties and independents and that’s why we’re doing this... We’re not just focusing on left-wing voters. We want to reach out to people who’ve been disaffected by the political system, wherever they mayLastbe.”Friday marked the N.C. State Board of Elections’ deadline for finalizing the general election ballot. That deadline is tied to a Sept. 9 deadline for distribution of absentee ballots. U.S. District Judge James Dever ruled on Aug. 5 that North Carolina’s July 1 candidate filing deadline would not apply to two Green Party candidates, including Hoh. Dever reached that ruling after the state elections board agreed to recognize the Green Party on Aug. 1, one month after the candidateGreensdeadline.had submitted petition signatures required by state law in mid-May. In its first consideration of those signatures on June 30, the elections board had split 3-2 in rejecting recognition for the Green Party. Democratic board members opposed recognition, while Republican members supported the Greens. See GREEN, Page 3

GREEN From Page 2 State and national Democratic groups intervened in the Greens’ federal lawsuit against the state elections board. The Democratic groups urged the Appeals Court to block Dever’s order. At the same time that 4th Circuit judges denied Democrats’ emergency motion to stay Dever’s ruling, the judges also allowed the National Republican Senatorial Committee to file a friendof-the-court brief in the case. “The record below contains significant evidence indicating that Intervenors believe that excluding the Green Party from the general election ballot in 2022 will boost the Democratic Party’s electoral prospects, to the detriment of the Republican Party and the NRSC’s efforts to support Republican candidates,” the Republican group had argued in its brief. “Accordingly, the NRSC has an interest in ensuring that qualified Green Party candidates are not categorically excluded from the ballot.” Barring other legal action, the race to fill retiring U.S. Sen. Richard Burr’s seat will feature four candidates: Democrat Cheri Beasley, Republican Ted Budd, Libertarian Shannon Bray, and Hoh. You!

DONALD MICHAEL PAYSEUR RALEIGH – Pamela Halsten from Lincolnton tried her luck on a $1 Cash 5 ticket and won the $659,989 jackpot in the Easter Sunday drawing.Halsten bought her lucky Quick Pick ticket from the Ingles Market on East Main St., Lincolnton. She arrived at lottery headquarters last Tuesday to collect her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $468,663. Ethan Lineberger grows fresh blackberries for local market use at his two farm locations. He is participating in a variety trial currently in collaboration with NC State University to evaluate newer erect/semierect cultivars. Most of the cultivars on his farms are thornless which is a trait that is largely responsible for increasing commercial production of blackberries. You can even taste the progress in flavor in the newer cultivars on trial as opposed to Natchez which was a 2007 University of Arkansas cultivar. Natchez still has a little bite to its flavor (still tasty in my opinion). Natchez will remain a staple on Ethan's farm however due to how early the fruit ripens. Part of the puzzle for a grower like Ethan is selecting the best cultivars for flavor but also making sections that extend their season through July and into early August. Von, an NC State cultivar, has proven to be a workhorse on the farm, and Ponca shows promise thus far out of the trial cultivars. Growers that ship their product may choose to select a variety that has exceptional firmness and ships well. Blackberries are a crop that will continue to see improvement thanks to University plant breeding efforts. Lincoln Co. woman wins $659,989 jackpot on Easter Sunday by PAYTON FLOWERS NC State University It’s August and the heat has set in across Gaston County. Early childhood memories of picking wild blackberries along the railroad tracks with my grandmother always come back to me this time of year. Picking berries was fun, even if my hands were all scratched up afterwards. What I didn’t care for was the flavor, it was bitter and seedy. It took a whole lot of Maw Maw’s magic (sugar) to make those berries worthy enough for a pie. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who thought that way, many cultivars have been bred to improve the quality of the wild blackberry.

For high school teachers involved in the district’s ninth grade camp, they were able to participate in professional development in the areas of math and reading. School counselors and other student services personnel participated in professional development that focused on strategies to support students’ well-being and their emotional and mentalAdditionally, health. Gaston County Schools conducted the annual Teaching and Learning Conference and Secretaries Conference to provide workshops and training, and the school district offered support for employees involved in two professional development programs that are a part of the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy: one program that prepares teacher assistants to become teachers and one program that prepares teachers to become school/central level administrators.New Chromebooks for student use – Each student is issued a Chromebook computer for use at school and at home. Providing a computing device for students was done for the first time when the COVID-19 pandemic began to support remote/virtual learning. This summer, more than 10,000 new Chromebooks were distributed to schools to replace outdated ones. Providing Chromebooks for students extends learning beyond the classroom and gives them access to academic/school resources anytime.School renovation and repair projects – Thanks to the school bonds that were approved in 2018, various repair and renovation projects have been completed or are in progress at schools across the county. The projects include roofing, lighting, flooring, life safety, HVAC, parking lot, and other upgrades. Additionally, plans are under way to build a new school to replace Grier Middle School in Gastonia. The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place next spring.
▪ Questions, concerns, and up-to-date information – If parents have a question or concern, they are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher or the school principal to discuss the issue or schedule a meeting. Parents are reminded to make sure that their child’s school has up-to-date contact information (home address, telephone number, e-mail address, etc.) on file. Parents should contact the school office to provide updates.
■ Why aren’t meals free like the past two years? Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government made breakfast and lunch meals available free-ofcharge for all students during the past two school years. The free meals ended June 30, and Congress did not renew the program. Therefore, meal prices are in effect this year.
■ What about the CEP schools? There are 19 schools that qualify for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. All students at schools involved in the CEP program receive meals freeof-charge. Students who attend one of the following schools do not have to pay for breakfast and lunch and do not have to fill out an application for free or reduced-price meals: H.H. Beam Elementary; Bessemer City Central Elementary; Bessemer City Middle; Bessemer City Primary; Brookside Elementary; Carr Elementary; Chapel Grove Elementary; Gardner Park Elementary; Grier Middle; Lingerfeldt Elementary; North Belmont Elementary; Pleasant Ridge Elementary; Sadler Elementary; Southwest Middle; Springfield Elementary; Tryon Elementary; Warlick Academy; Woodhill Elementary; and York Chester Middle.

■ How do parents apply for free or reduced-price meals? Parents with a child at a non-CEP school (see list above) are encouraged to apply to receive free or reduced-price meals. Eligibility is based on household income and the number of people in the household. The application (in paper format) can be picked up from the school office or school cafeteria or at the School Nutrition Office, 500 Reid Street, Lowell. The application (in electronic format) can be completed by clicking here.

17 start date also means students will get out of school earlier. The last day of school is Wednesday, May 24, 2023, and high school graduation day is Friday, May 26, 2023. School schedule and bus transportation –Schools will follow the start/end times that were in place last year. Elementary schools will operate from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Middle schools and high schools will operate from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Parents should check with their child’s school for the exact schedule as start/end times for some schools may vary. The start/end times coincide with the two-tier model used for bus transportation. The two-tier model makes it possible for bus drivers to complete two routes rather than just one in the morning and in the afternoon – a driver has an elementary route first and then a middle school or a high school route. The process is intended to get students to school and back home in a timely manner and ensure that there are enough bus drivers.Parents will receive information from their child’s school about bus routes, pick-up and drop-off times, bus rules and expectations, etc. If a parent has a question or concern about bus transportation, the parent is encouraged to contact the school office and/or the principal.Motorists are reminded about the possibility of heavy traffic near schools in the early morning and mid-afternoon hours. It is important for motorists to decrease speed in school zones, watch for pedestrians, and use caution when they see a school bus. Whenever a school bus is stopped (with stop sign extended and red lights flashing) to pick up or drop off students, motorists must stop for the bus – it is unlawful to pass a stopped school bus.

■ What if my child has a special dietary need? If a student has a special dietary need and/or the need for a unique meal time, parents should complete a diet order form; the form must be signed by a recognized medical authority. Contact the school cafeteria manager, the school nurse, or the School Nutrition Office, 500 Reid Street, Lowell, for a diet order form or click here to download it from the Gaston County Schools website. Please note that students who have had a diet order form on file in the past are being asked to complete a new form this year. The new form will be in effect until the school receives written or verbal notification from the parent or recognized medical authority that the diet order is no longer needed.

415 South Mountain Street, Cherryville Fairview Baptist Church “It ain’t til the fat lady or “It ain’t over til it’s over’’, are popular colloquialisms spoken about certain situations, especially in sports. However, when life gets tough, rough, and everything seems to be falling apart, I like to proclaim “It’s not over until God says it’s over!” I remind myself that I serve a supernatural God - a God of miracle-working power. Impossible is not in his vocabulary! Jeremiah 32:17 (NIV) states, “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” God’s Glory Jesus had some friends who were siblings: Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. The sisters sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was sick. John 11:6 states, “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.” At first glance, it doesn’t make sense that the passage says that Jesus loved them, but didn’t immediately go to heal Lazarus - instead he waited 2 MORE DAYS and Lazarus DIED! In fact, Lazarus was in the grave for 4 days and his body had developed a bad odor. Like these sisters, we don’t always understand why the Lord is taking a while to answer our prayers, especially when problems go from bad to worse. Sometimes, it’s because he has a greater purpose to fulfill that is tied to our blessing, and he has a set time to release his glory that will not only bless us, but also many others. In addition, nothing intimidates or limits God’s power. He is able to make all things new and better, even resurrect the dead! You’re Greatly Loved During times of waiting, some people have felt that God didn’t love them or abandoned them. I’m sure Mary and Martha, maybe even Lazaus, felt forsaken by Jesus. Imagine their surprise and joy when the Lord raised Lazarus from the dead! I want to assure everyone reading this that GOD LOVES YOU, and he has NOT forgotten about you! Even if you don’t sense that he is there because of the pain you are going through, just trust him! Remember how he has come through before and remind yourself of his goodness. Isaiah 41:10 (ESV), states, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Because of this psychological bombardment and because of our human nature, we humans do not like to wait! But, think of Samuel the prophet. He was not always a prophet! Still even at a young age, years before his ordination, he said “Here am I, Lord.” Then he proceeded to dream, prepare, and wait. (1 Sam. 2:21; Luke 2:40)Think of Simon the Tanner (Acts 10) or Lydia the Entrepreneur (Acts 16); neither were pastors, but after patiently waiting to be used by God they finally got the chance to take their homes, money, and abilities to say “Here am I, Lord.” Then, they went right back to dreaming, preparing, and waiting for another opportunity. Despite what you may have heard, the Lord does not exist merely to deliver on our every whim and fancy. In fact, Scripture condemns those who portray God’s goodness as a set of ‘genie-type’ wishes! Rather, the Bible calls us to a process wherein we are to dream big, to wait on the Lord, all the while preparing for the future.Iknow what you’re thinking – why would God invite us to, “Cast your cares upon Him”; or “Take My yoke for it is easy”; or “Pray without ceasing”; or “Ask for Wisdom”; or “Taste and see that the Lord is good?” Why does God invite us to be bold in our prayer requests (Heb. 4:16) if He is most likely going to have us wait on a Inresponse?amodern world of immediate gratifications, I would remind you that God has always been able to provide instant healing, provision, strength, comfort, wisdom, and relief, and sometimes He does! God’s ability has never wavered! But, dear friend, here is the thing – our Heavenly

Father is more interested in helpingyou become Christlike than He is about you becoming debt-free, cancer-free, pain-free, worry-free, bossfree, or stress-free. God wants you to be holy! Shocking, isn’t it? This is the God of the Bible, but too often our ears itch and we find a “preacher” that will tell us of a “god” who wants us to be happy right now. Ah, but being healthy without holiness is vain. Being rich without holiness is vain. Being stress-free without holiness is Countlessvain. heroes of Scripture (like Samuel, Simon the Tanner, Lydia, and countless others) had renewed strength because they waited on the Lord (Is. 40)! Just about every Biblical character spent years in a growth process by building their hope, faith, patience, and obedience on the law of the Lord. Think of Jacob, who is known for many things of his youth, but mainly he is known for being an old man and as the grandfather to the tribes of ThinkIsrael.ofMoses, who trained as a politician for 40 years and sheepherdera for another 40 years – all before leading theThinkExodus.of Timothy, who was a student of Scripture decades before becoming an apprentice to Paul and the pastor we now admire. Well, Jesus Himself did not start His full earthly ministry until around the ripe age of 30! This would mean, for illustration’s sake, if Jesus would have been born in 1991, He would only now (2021) have begun preaching of the coming Kingdom of God! What an amazing thought. My friends, if you are waiting on the Lord, then be of good courage. Your strength, your health, your financial status, your joy, and your family will be renewed – but not on your timing. Trust the specific growth process that the Lord has for you. Like an athlete, train your mind, heart, soul, and strength with prayer and with Scripture. Stand fast against the schemes of the devil and the flesh. God has not deserted you! He is not powerless to help you. Whether in this life or the one to come – He will restore to you all that is broken. But for now, and above all, God wants you to “Be holy as I, the Lord, am Holy.”Let’s strive towards that end!

In an earlier Eagle article Ms. Eaker commented that, “We, as Christ followers, are called to take care of each other. He was a candidate for the Republican Party presidential nomination in both 2008 and 2016.” When asked how the show, which Darin noted was taped on July 15, 2022, and aired on July 16 on the TBN Network, came about, Darin responded, via email, “We’ve been hoping to get the opportunity to play The Huckabee Show for a long time now. Many close musical friends have been a part of Huckabee’s show in the past and kept telling us how they had mentioned us to him about being on the show. They felt our music would be a good fit for the audience that he reaches on a weekly basis. Keith Bilbrey, announcer of the show and a good friend of ours, also mentioned to Huckabee that we’d be a good fit. With connections from our sweet musical friends and Keith, our manager, Brian Smith, was able to secure our appearance on the show that aired on July 16th of this year. Gov. Huckabee wanted to showcase our latest album ‘This Life We’re Livin’’ and a song we co-wrote with a dear friend of ours, Bill Whyte, titled ‘Grand Ole Circle’. The song shares our love of and respect to our most favorite place in the world…the Grand Ole Opry. We’ve had the honor of being asked to play the Opry 45 performances since our debut in 2017, with three more visits scheduled for this month (August).”Darinsaid Gov. Huckabee played bass with them, along with his house/stage band.“During our performance segment of the show we performed two songs, ‘Grand Ole Circle’, which was the featured song and a second song called ‘Old Fashioned.’ (Gov.) Huckabee enjoys an awesome house band where he too sits in on bass with every musical artist that is featured on the show. He’s a great player and loves every minute of backing up his musical guests. If your flip phone is becoming obsolete, as you mentioned in your question, you’ll need to buy a new device, which you can do through US Mobile if you choose their plan. They offer the “NUU F4L” flip phone for $39 for new customers. Or you can purchase an unlocked phone through retail stores like Walmart or Best Buy, or online. One of the best value flip phones right now is the (unlocked) “Alcatel GO FLIP 4044 4G LTE,” available at Amazon.com for $80. Some other super cheap wireless plans worth a look are Ultra Mobile’s “PayGo” plan (UltraMobile.com/PayGo), which provides 100 talk minutes, 100 texts for only $3 per month. And Tello’s (Tello. com) “build your own plan” that starts at $5 per month for 100 talk minutes and unlimited texting. Both Ultra Mobile PayGo and Tello also run on T-Mobile’s network and will let you use your existing phone (if compatible or unlocked) or buy a new one.
How the Scam Works: Home improvement scams can start with a knock on the door, a flier or an ad. The contractor may offer a low price or a short timeframe. One common hook is when the scammer claims to be working in your neighborhood on another project and has leftover supplies.Once started, a rogue contractor may “find” issues that significantly raise the price. If you object, they threaten to walk away and leave a half-finished project. Or they may accept your upfront deposit and then never return to do the job. Following a natural disaster, scammers persuade homeowners to sign over their insurance payment. Tips to Spot This Scam:
• Ask for references and check them out. Bad contractors will be reluctant to share this information and scammers won’t wait for you to do your homework. If you can, get references from past customers, both older references to check on the quality of the work and newer references to make sure current employees are up to the task. Check them out at BBB.org to see what other customers have experienced. And always be sure to get a written contract with the price, materials and timeline. The more detail, the better.•Know the law. Work with local businesses that have proper identification, licensing and insurance. Confirm that your vendor will get related permits and make sure you know who is responsible for what according to your local laws and that your vendor is ready to comply.

On Monday, August 15, Governor Roy Cooper ended the state’s COVID19 State of Emergency. With vaccines, treatments, and other tools to combat COVID-19 widely available, and with new legislation now providing the requested flexibility to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and health care providers to continue to respond, the state is poised to continue comprehensive pandemic response without the need for the State of Emergency. Many of the state’s public health measures combatting the pandemic had previously been lifted, but the State of Emergency continued to allow the distribution of vaccines and tests and regulatory flexibility to ensure staff capacity in the state’s healthcare system. Following legislative changes made in the budget signed by Gov. Cooper in July that allow NCDHHS to continue to respond to the pandemic, the State of Emergency can be lifted.“Thepandemic brought unprecedented challenges to our state and people now have the knowledge and the tools like vaccines, boosters and therapeutic treatments to keep them safe,” said Governor Cooper. “Executive orders issued under the State of Emergency protected public health and helped us save lives and livelihoods. North Carolina is emerging even stronger than before and my administration will continue to work to protect the health and safety of our people.”“COVID-19 is still with us, and North Carolinians now have multiple ways to manage the virus, so it doesn’t manage us,” said NCDHHS Secretary Kody H. Kinsley. “NCDHHS will remain focused on COVID-19 trends and data and ensuring we stay prepared.”

• Watch out for “red flags.” Say NO to cash-only deals, high-pressure sales tactics, high upfront payments, handshake deals without a contract, and on-site inspections. Not all “storm chasers” are con artists, but enough are that you should be cautious any time a home contractor contacts you first ... especially after a natural disaster.

Senior Targeted Providers In addition to these super cheap plans, there are several other wireless companies that cater to older customers and offer low-cost basic plans and simple flip phones. BBB Scam Alert: Home Improvement scammers take money, don’t complete work
Dear Savvy Senior, A few months ago, I read a column you wrote on extremely cheap smartphone plans for budget-conscious seniors. Can you do a similar column for those of us who still use basic flip phones? My old 3G flip phone is about to become obsolete, so I’m looking for the cheapest possible replacement. I only need a simple cell phone (no data) for emergency calls when I’m away from home. Penny Pincher Dear Penny, For many seniors, like yourself, who only want a simple basic cell phone for emergency purposes and occasional calls, there are a number of super cheap plans available from small wireless providers you may have never heard of. Here are some of the best deals available right now.
Three other providers that are popular among seniors are Snapfon (Snapfon. com), which offers a 100 minutes and unlimited texting plan for $10. Consumer Cellular (ConsumerCellular.com), which provides an unlimited talk plan or $15 per month. They also give 5 percent discounts to AARP members. And Lively (Lively. com), maker of the popular Jitterbug Flip2 senior-friendly flip phone. Their cheapest monthly plan is 300 minutes of talk and text for YouSubsidized$15.Plansalsoneedto know that if you’re on a government program such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income or food stamps/SNAP. Or, if your annual household income is at or below 135 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines – $18,347 for one person, or $24,719 for two – you might also qualify for free or subsidized wireless plans from various carriers via the federal Lifeline program.
