“Our last day of service was Saturday, Aug. 20,” said Mr. Messer. “We were able to open and serve a little more than we did the first year out of COVID, but obviously, lifeguards were still hard to find.” He continued, “With that said, we had one of our best seasons so far as participation in our activities went. We had upwards of 75 participants in a day on some weekends.”
by MICHAEL E. POWELL michael@cfmedia.infoEditor work session was called for Tuesday, Aug. 23, and while the agenda was short, much was accomplished as a prelude to September’s regular session, which is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 12. cept the consent agenda items as one, with all council members approving said items.Palmer Huffstetler, Sr., came before the Council in order to discuss issues regarding the Cherryville Historical Museum. He was assisted in this by Mayor H.L. Beam, HuffstetlerIII. said he was one of the one’s who started the Cherryville Historical Association, then spoke about various issues that that body was having currently, facilitating the closing of the doors to the museum until such issues are resolved. Mr. Huffstetler noted the current president has said there is still some friction between members that needs to be resolved immediately so the museum board can move forward. Mr. Huffstetler made a couple of suggestions to the council about what he feels needs to be done going forward, with Mayor Beam noting Council could perhaps meet with the Historical Association in a proposed work session in order to move toward resolving the various issues with which they are dealing. Currently the museum is an independent entity that operates on funds it receives from private donors and some funds given it by the city, which owns the actual building in which it is housed.Mayor Beam noted Councilman Malcolm Parker is the city’s liaison with the museum board. The biggest discussion of this past work session concerned agenda items regarding the Cherryvale property project located on Requa Road, and it was noted that council will be making “… some kind of decision at the next regular session” regarding the project in question.Cherryvale property developer Robert Johnson spoke about the proposed project, as did three of the See COUNCIL, Page 6

by MICHAEL E. POWELL michael@cfmedia.infoEditor Josey Messer, the Associate Executive Director of the Cherryville Family YMCA and the Pharr Family YMCA, said the “Y’s” work and classes at the Cherryville pool are over for this year. The City’s Ballard Park – Yates McGinnis Pool was officially open for business starting Saturday, June 11, Messer noted, in a previous EagleJoseyarticle.also said the lifeguards on duty this summer were Samuel Herrera, Luke Harmon, Eric White, and Jessica Wallace, who did a great job, he added. Messer said he the lifeguards they had this summer were some students that “lived close”, with the help of “…some that drove as far as South Gaston Area to work our Cherryville pool.”
Josey also noted that their famous water aerobics class was brought back and they had “…anywhere from 8 to 12 (participants) in our classes on Thursdays.” The teacher for that class was Debbie Lesenger, he noted. She started teaching those classes on June 23. Messer said he and the YMCA family were happy with the results this season, adding, “The pool was also able to see children from different camps in the county come by and use the pool and have fun. Our Summer camp program in Belmont also brought children to enjoy our Cherryville pool. I think that is a great service See POOL, Page 6

Last school year, according to state reports, 2.7 percent of kindergarten students, 4.6 percent of seventh graders, and 6.8 percent of high school seniors did not have all of their required immunizations. This does not include those with religious or medical exemptions, which are less than 2 percent of children at each grade level. “A lot of people were afraid to come to the health department because we were testing and vaccinating for COVID,” said Diane Creek, director of the Toe River Health District, which oversees health operations in the Mitchell, Avery and Yancey county health departments.Thesefigures dropped after pandemic restrictions loosened on schools statewide, Moore said. She said she is also in Lost Voices of Fentanyl, a national group that has over 20,000 people, so she is not surprised at the kind of response she gets when organizing gatherings.“We see it every day; every day it’s several new moms on that Facebook page that just lost their child to fentanyl poisoning,” Drewes said. “My daughter is on a billboard in Kentucky. On that billboard there is a 15-year-old girl, a 14-yearold boy, and a 2-year-old baby, all dead from fentanyl. It’s an Theepidemic.”numbers confirm Drewes’ analysis. While only about 5,000 people typically died from drug overdoses per year in the United States, this number jumped to over 10,000 per year in the late 1990s due to a surge in heroin use. But the current problem now dwarfs those numbers, with 107,000 dying last year from overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The majority of these deaths, over 71,000, were due to fentanyl.Themost-recent data released by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner showed that in 2021, fentanyl-overdose deaths hit a record, with 3,163. This was a 30 percent increase from the 2,426 deaths the year before. In the first quarter of 2022, the NCOCME reported a 5% increase in overall overdose deaths from 2021, showing 2022 is on track to meet, or maybe even exceed, last year’s record devastation. For Drewes, she thinks both the national and state governments have failed to address this disaster. “It’s made in China in illegal labs and is sent straight to Mexican cartels and through our open southern borders,” Drewes said. “We’ve got children being murdered, and they are being murdered. They’re being deceived to death. They don’t know they’re getting fentanyl.” She said the answer is to close the southern border and to take the fight to the drug cartels.“And another thing, public service announcements,” she said. “When COVID came out, within weeks we knew exactly what to do. We need public service telling people what to do with fentanyl. We need people in the schools educating our children. We need to educate our parents.” In addition, Drewes said North Carolina needs to use the death-by-distribution law that was passed in 2019. The law gave prosecutors across the state the right to charge distributors with a felony if their product led to someone’s death. A WCNC story from early 2022 showed that after two years on the books, the death-by-distribution law had been used fewer than 75 times despite around 7,000 people dying of drug overdoses in the state during that period. “We need to see to it that the death-by-distribution law is enforced in this state; and it’s not happening,” Drewes said. “Of those five counties (in her congressional district), only one has ever had any death-by-distribution prosecutions, and that being Franklin County. We need a statewide protocol on how every law-enforcement agency addresses these deaths and how they investigate.” She said that those who are recklessly giving people, including kids, drugs that they know will likely kill them, deserve the up-to-40year sentences called for in the “It’slaw. not like they don’t know they’re poisoning people,” Drewes said. “They know. They know and they don’t care. It’s all about the God-almighty dollar. My child died for what, $10? My only child. No, I’m not going to take that lying down. And I tell people all the time; my child is gone. This is about saving yours.”

Drewes, who lost her only child, Heaven, to a fentanyl overdose in 2019, told Carolina Journal in an Aug. 21 interview, that she organized the event after learning that the federal Drug Enforcement Agency had declared Aug. 21 the first annual Fentanyl Awareness Day. She had been planning a “Rise Up” rally on fentanyl in October but shifted the date. “I fight so that she did not die in vain,” Drewes said on why she organizes on the issue. “And that’s one thing I’m adamant about. She did not die for nothing.”
Drewes said her group, the Forgotten Victims of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren Counties, was an organic meeting of mothers who had lost their children to opioid, especially fentanyl, overdoses.“Ithought I was the only one this had ever happened to, to my child; then through social media, I was finding all these other mothers,” Drewes said.

Father Knows Best DANYALE PATTERSON
Many of us, sodemic,thenavirus,19,COVID-weoftheunderhavealltuallyac-ofus,livedcloudwhatcallcoro-pan-andmanyother names, for the last two years. I grew up with parents who had lived through the Great Depression and that was a milestone, a marker in their lives. I think COVID-19 is one such marker in our lives, and especially in my own. I would have never dreamed, would not have wanted to dream about, such an event as a global pandemic, but in February and early March of 2020 we were thrust into the deep-end of fear, anxiety, depression, and sickness. Many were lost, many lived to tell the story. In many ways, COVID changed the world. As a pastor, during the difficult early days of COVID, I was unable to visit anyone. Worship went online and that took quite a bit of work, but suddenly, I had more time. Time to think, meditate, look to the future. I was coming up on 25 years in ministry, had accepted two calls during my career, and wondered, what did the next page in my book look like? Second career pastor, getting older, nearing retirement, all those things that enter your mind at four in the morning. But then one day my wife, Robin, asked me why we were living in Virginia, when all our children, and more importantly, our grandchildren, are in North Carolina. Good question. Why? Because we lived in the best house we had ever owned with a view of the Appalachian Mountains, right out our front window. I had pastored a wonderful congregation for 10 years. We had a swimming pool. Even so, I wondered why we lived in Virginia and our family in North Carolina. So, after some prayer and a lot of thought, I called a friend of mine in North Carolina, a pastor on the Bishop’s Staff, and asked what the chances were of an opportunity to come back to North Carolina. I mentioned moving back to Cherryville, to be near family. “Scott,” he said and paused, “why did you call today?” I said I didn’t know, I just picked up the phone. He told me about St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cherryville needing a pastor. The very church where I visit my parents at the cemetery. The Lord’s work has mysterious ways. I left after graduating from Cherryville High back in 1978, never any intention of returning except to visit. But now I have had the opportunity to move back to my own hometown. For all those years, I carried a piece of Cherryville in my heart. No matter where I’ve lived, I have always subscribed to the “Cherryville Eagle” to keep up with home, and visited my parents and family in the area. And for some wonderful reason, God has brought me and my family back to this same place. It’s a unique experience, moving somewhere you never really left. I moved to a new church in a new state in a different town, which just so happened to be my hometown, and in many ways, where I have lived my entire life. God is truly good!
MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO Israel wanted a king like other nations. God gave them several reasons why they should give up the idea. He warned them that the kings would make them slaves, take 10% of their money, take their children and property, etc. However, they refused to listen to him. Beware of trying to keep up with and comparing your life to others, especially on social media. It may appear that they have experienced overnight success, or that their family is perfect, while it seems like it’s taking forever for you to move forward. We must take our eyes off other people and keep them on our Lord and Savior who is quite aware of what we need and when we need it. Psalm 123:1 (CEV) states, “Our LORD and our God, I turn my eyes to you, on your throne in heaven.”

Have you ever prayed and told the Lord that you wanted to do his perfect will? Then you prayed for him to do something for you and you didn’t get it? I have. I actually got upset with God because he didn’t do what I thought he should have done for me, although I had just prayed to be in his perfect will. Sometimes we are prideful and think that we know more than God, especially about when and how we should receive our blessing. We, the creation, shake our fists at God and demand that he accomplishes our plans instead of his, but that is backwards and silly.
Isaiah 22:22 (NIV) states, “I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” Stop brooding over that relationship that didn’t work, the job that didn’t hire you, or the person who overlooked you. God closed that door to give you a better relationship, or a greater position. Don’t settle for less than God’s best! It’s not time to be discouraged. Get excited - the best is yet to come!
PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Sovereign Father, how great are the riches of your wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand your decisions and your ways! I praise you for being absolutely amazing, powerful, and good. There is none like you. There is none greater than you! You are the true and living God! Forgive me for not always surrendering to your will, and getting upset with you when I didn’t get my desire. You are never late - you are always on time. Help me to remember that you, Heavenly Father, know what’s best for me. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.” Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you! When asked by one of the councilmen, “Why Cherryville?”, Mr. Johnson replied that Gaston County was growing, and its growth mirrors and surpasses that even of the state’s growth in a 10-year period, based on census information.“Thecounty has seen 24,000-plus residents added since (the last census),” he said, adding, “and the 65-plus age group is the fastest growing group.”

The proposed homes – all to built over a six-year period, if council approves – are to be in the $300,000 to $400,000 price range and the four product lines discussed will be of the town home or a two-story style design, with a possible ranch-style design in the mix as well, noted Mr. Johnson. There was a continuation of traffic studies to be done by the NCDOT and how they would impact the nearby communities and households already there.

Johnson told the council that the data the NCDOT uses comes from an institute headed by traffic engineers whose sole job is to look at all aspects and permutations of traffic flow before any work is begun on any upcoming projects. “The NCDOT approves that data; it is not generated by someone else,” he said, in response to one of the council member’s questions. Johnson also noted that a traffic study is not normally required for 3,000 cars or less, though it was mentioned in the work session that the traffic flow for the proposed project could be as high as 4,000-plus cars in a given period.

CHS’ Tobias Miller stops the Viking runner as he tries to make it through a hole in the Ironmen Josh Ward and Kam Bolin wrap up the Avery County Vikings ball carrier last Friday night at Rudisill Stadium.
After an interception by Hahn, Kam Bolin picked up 2 yards, then topped that off by smashing his way into the end zone on a 10yard TD run, with 1:30 on the clock. The 2022 CHS Ironmen take the field at Rudisill Stadium Friday night, Aug. 19, against visiting Avery County.
The CHS Ironmen football team started their 2022 season with a 14-0 win over the visiting Avery County Vikings on Friday, Aug. 19. It was a good beginning for Coach Tim Pruitt and his lads and one everyone hopes they will be able to build from as the year progresses.First quarter action for either team was slow, ending with an Ironmen fumble being recovered by the Vikings on the 33 yard line. Starting quarterback Chase Miller got 2 rushing yards while Shamyr Moss got 4. In second quarter action the CHS men take over on downs and backup QB Josh Ward comes in for Miller for a bit. Ward scurries for 8 yards while powerhouse Kam Bolin charges ahead for 15 yards against the Vikings. Miller and Moss each pick up 2 yards apiece, then Landon Hahn catches a 10yard pass from Miller. After a couple more passing tries ending in an interception for Miller, the half is over, still with no score by either team.At half-time, the Ironmen have 25 yards off of 11 carries by their men and Miller completed 5 of 7 passes. Miller carried the ball 5 times for 7 yards. Bolin carries the ball in the first half 4 times for a total of 14 yards. At half-time, the CHS cheerleaders received their 2021 NCHSAA D2 Game Day State Champions; 2021 NCHSAA Small D2 Traditional State Champions; and 2022 NCCCA D2 Traditional State Champions rings during a half-time ceremony conducted by CHS Principal Shawn Hubers and CHS Athletic Director Coach Scott Harrill. Fifteen cheerleading ladies and their three coaches won the rings for their championship endeavors.Theaction picked up for the Ironmen in the third quarter as Hahn returned a Viking punt 50 yards and Miller scampered for 37 yards to get things started for the CHS men. Miller also completed a six-yard pass to senior Elijah Gibson. The Ironmen got on the board for 2 points with a safety with 8:21 on the clock. In fourth quarter play it was Miller again as Chase called his own number and ran for 19 yards to start the quarter off right. He then completed a 31-yard pass to Ward, but the Vikings did intercept a pass of his shortlyCollinafterwards.Hussintercepted a Viking pass and ran it 55 yards for an Ironmen TD with 5:48 on the clock. CHERRYVILLE LADY IRONMEN
The season is off and running for the Lady Ironmen of Coach Leigh Kiser. Kiser, the school’s career wins leader in volleyball, looks to three-time All-Conference performer Rileigh Kiser to lead her 2022 team, which looks to replace four starters from last year’s team. It was “so far, so good” as the ladies went on the road twice to start the season and pulled out two hard-fought five-set matches. Last Tuesday saw the ladies travel to North Gaston and pull out the match by scores of 25-18 NG, 25-22 CHS, 25-22 NG, 25-16 CHS, and 15-12 CHS in the final set. “What a way to start the season,” said Coach Kiser, who added, “We were led by Rileigh Kiser with 5 serve aces, 27 assists and 15 digs. Carson Reed, Emily Allen, and Lexi McSwain combined for 21 kills, and Taylor Digh was a defensive leader with 11 digs.”Thenext day the team traveled to Lincolnton to take on the Lady Wolves, again finding themselves in a nailbiter, as they won the match again in five sets. Match scores were 25-20 L, 25-23 CHS, 27-25 CHS, 25-23 L, and 15-7 CHS, to win it. Laila Davis came away from this one with 6 kills, Carson Reed's 10 kills and 3 blocks, and freshman Emily Allen’s 13 kills helped the Lady Ironmen keep pace with the Lady Wolves, along with Rileigh Kiser’s 36 assists, 9 kills, and 15 digs. Taylor Digh again helped the defense with 19 digs. Coach Kiser said she has gotten production from all over her roster in the early matches, and these hard-fought wins will help her young team once conference play begins. In JV Lady Ironmen action, CHS won 2-0 at North Gaston by scores of 25-19 andJenna25-16.Anthony had 5 kills and Kennedy Weathers 4 serve aces; they led CHS. At Lincolnton the JV ladies fell 2-0 by scores of 25-22 and 25-14. Kate Bookout had 5 digs and led the JV ladies’ defense. Both squads were back action, on the road Tuesday (Aug. 23) at Chase; at home in a rematch with Lincolnton (Wednesday, Aug. 24); and played host to conference foe Shelby on Thursday, Aug, 25. Ironmen move to 5-0 Coach Leigh Kiser said, “I’m really excited about how my team is playing right now.” On Tuesday, Aug. 22, the ladies traveled to Chase to take on the Lady Trojans and came away a 3-1 winner by scores of 27-25 (CHS), 25-22 (Chase), 25-15 (CHS) and 25-22“Our(CHS).defense was really solid in this one,” Kiser said. Rileigh Kiser, with 23 assists and 14 digs, helped lead the way, along with Carson Reed who had 10 kills and 5 blocked shots. Emily Allen, with 8 kills and 13 digs, and Krista Davis and Taylor Digh’s 8 digs each were big for the CHS defense. The home opener was Wednesday, Aug. 24, and the Lincolnton Lady Wolves came to Nixon Gym. This match was about offense and serving according to Coach Kiser.Emily Allen, Carson Reed, Lexi McSwain, Gracie Truesdale, and Laila Davis combined for 34 kills, which were set up by Rileigh Kiser’s 34 assists. Kiser, with 4 aces, McSwain’s 5 aces, and Taylor Digh’s 4 serve aces, led the ladies’ serve game. Digh also had a game-high 11 digs on defense. “This was our best game offensively in the short season,” said Kiser. Shelby came to town on Thursday for the conference opener. The Lady Lions gave a good effort against the Lady Ironmen before falling 3-0 by scores of 2519, 25-18, and 25-23. Emily Allen led the offense with 9 kills, which were set by Rileigh Kiser’s 16 assists. Carson Reed continued to block shots adding 4 more to her season total. Taylor Digh’s 5 serve aces and Kiser’s 4 aces led from the service line. Coach Kiser said her ladies are really excited about the fast start to the season and look to add more wins to their total. In JV ironmen action, the Lady Ironmen lost 2-0 in the match at Chase. Kate Bookout, with 3 serve aces, led Cherryville. The JV ladies lost again at home to Lincolnton by a 2-0 match score.
