July 26 Council work session covers zoning, truck parking, museum topics All done in preparation for Aug. 8’s regular Council session and voting The Cherryville City Council had their July 26 work session at the Fire Department’s training and conference room, discussing a short list of topics they will discuss in depth and vote on at their next regular session on Monday, Aug. 8. After the meeting was called to order by Mayor H.L. Beam, III, Council discussed the issue of placing “No Thru Trucks” signs on Main Street. The signs, if approved, will be found on the stretch of street from Rudisill and Main to W. Academy and Main, according to a photo included with
the agenda materials. City Manager Brian Dalton noted to representatives from McGinnis Furniture and to Council the problems with the trucks turning issues may be due to loss of street width as a result of the “bump outs” constructed on Main Street as part of the CMP’s Streetscape project. “There has been some room lost due to those,” noted Mr. Dalton. Mr. Dalton also brought to Council’s attention the discussion of rezoning 1407 E. Main St., request to change the zoning from its current status of B-3 (General Business District) to the proposed R-9 (Single and Two-Family Residential) in order for the applicant to convert the building to a dwelling. Mr. Dalton said the Planning and Zon-
ing Board voted to deny the request by the applicant citing its denial as due to the city’s Future Land Use Map (adopted on Aug. 13, 2012) which shows the property as continuing in the commercial zoning district. A letter was sent to the applicant on July 19, 2022 by Planning and Zoning Director Alex Blackburn to inform the applicant of the board’s decision. The Planning and Zoning Board, regarding the rezoning of 109 S. Jacob Street from a B-1 status (Central Business District) to the proposed R-O (Residential Office) status, asked Council that the zoning requested for this property be approved. which has been around since 1976, had as their previous chief, Aaron Vance, Jr., who was the head man from 2916 until just last month. “Bam Bam” said, like many other firefighters – volunteer and paid – he had a dream of doing what he is See RAYFIELD, Page 6

The 134th President of the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, Quentin “Q” Cash, has served his one-year term as that august group’s leader and now leaves that post to become its Immediate Past President. He has, by all accounts, acquitted himself well in that position. Young Cash and his father Jeff, the retired fire chief of Cherryville and its past City manager, are the only father and son duo to have ever held the NCSFA’s highest office. According to the NCSFA website (ncsfa.com), the Executive Board for the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association is comprised of nine members: President,
First Vice President, Second Vice President, three Regional Directors, Treasurer, Statistician, and Immediate Past President. Kim Eaker, a long-time community volunteer and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, said recently that SJLC, along with other churches in Cherryville, has started the drive to collect
school supplies for needy kids. “School will be starting back before we know it,” said Ms. Eaker. “Unfortunately, many children will not have the school supplies that they need to be successful.” For many years now she and other like-minded individuals have endeavored to
give back to their community and help kids and their families in one of the best possible ways; provide school supplies – which can be a big cost for many families – to them in order to give them a muchneeded boost as they begin their school year. Said Eaker, “We, as Christ followers, are called

Roy Cooper was wrong to veto a bill that would shift the oversight structure of North Carolina’s schools for the blind and deaf, according to a statement from Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt. COUNCIL From Page 1 applicants of this decision in their favor was sent to said applicant o July 19, 2022. Council discussed the final plat of the proposed J.C. Dellinger Subdivision, noting the number of units proposed for the development, which Mr. Dalton noted began with 30 proposed units, has been reduced to 12 units, as per the plat. “This is the final plat,” noted Mr. Dalton. Council also discussed the proposed Cherryvale rezoning issue, which entails
rezoning property that is to be annexed in order for the applicant to build roughly 500-plus houses on the 162plus acres in the city’s corporate limits. This is to be discussed further at Council’s Aug. 8 regular session. An issue with the city’s utility policy came up (regarding current undercharges/overcharges) and council members noted that because of those issues, city staff is to investigate how the city can move forward in correcting the issues as soon as possible. Mr. Dalton next addressed an issue that has arisen regarding certain issues involving the Cherryville Historical Museum.
Mr. Dalton told council he has been meeting with museum board members and they are endeavoring to resolve the issues moving forward. In other business City Manager Dalton suggested that, regarding COVID pay for employees, the city keep the same policy, which entails their receiving 40 hours of pay for sick/off work time, as previously has been initiated. “We’re addressing this issue due to a slight resurgence in this illness, which has cropped up again,” said Mr. Dalton. There being no further business to be discussed, council adjourned.

Ms. Kim set up a tasting session after a few teens began discussing Bubble Tea earlier this year. After a good amount of research, a menu was set. The group tried steamed puddings from England, traditionally steamed moist sponge covered with sauce (chocolate was voted the best). There were a variety of seaweed chips, a popular snack from Japan, as well as rice crackers. Mini ‘stroopwafels’ from the Netherlands were a sweet surprise, as were ‘konpeito’, a rock candy that was introduced in Japan by Portuguese

Oddly enough, the bubble tea wasn’t as appealing to the teens as they thought it would be! This was an educational event as well, with the teens learning about the history of each food before they tried it. Our Tiny Art Show was awesome! Teens could pick up the kit the first three weeks of Summer Reading, then had three more weeks to turn in their completed work. We
opened voting on Monday, July 18 for the six entries that were submitted. Votes were cast here in the branch, and over 170 votes were cast online. Voting ended at midnight Friday, July 29, and the winners were announced and contacted on Saturday, July 30. For more information about the artists and the winners’ names, visit our Facebook page. We wrapped up our Summer Reading events with Shark Week Bingo. And guess who came to play? That’s right – Sharky!
It was a small crowd but so much fun. We have truly appreciated having our patrons in the building this summer for our events. We’re already planning for next year! He received the NCSFA Firefighter of the Year in 2015, and he was awarded his Chief Fire Officer Designation by the Center for Public Safety Excellence in 2019. He is a volunteer with the Cherryville Little League program, serving as a Board Member and Umpire Coordinator in the past. Lastly, he is a member of First Baptist Church in Cherryville. Quentin currently resides in Ranlo with his lovely bride Erin Howle Cash, and he noted they enjoy traveling around the country and the Caribbean together. Said his father, Jeff, “Cynthia and I are very proud of Quentin and his fire service dedication! He does an outstanding job. He is a natural born leader with a great skill set! He possesses great people skills! He serves the City of Shelby Fire Department as a Battalion Chief and the City of Cherryville Fire Department as a volunteer/ fill-in employee. He understands that the most valuable asset in any organization are the employees! He has a servants heart and places citizen service at the top of his operation priorities. His fire service work is not a career but a calling! He and his wife Erin are simply great folks! Serving as President of the NCSFA, he has

We are very proud and blessed!” His mom, Cynthia, echoed this sentiment as well, noting, “I am very proud of Quentin and all that he has accomplished. He is very intelligent, very driven, and a hard worker. He is the most organized person I know besides his dad. He has a heart for the Fire Service and truly cares about all of his fellow firefighters, including those that work for and with him. He and his dad, Jeff, are the only father/ son duo that have been President of the NC State Firefighters Association in its 135-year history, which is so awesome! “Q has done an outstanding job as President of the association, as well as his prior years spent on the board. I know that they will miss him because he has been such an asset to the board. Quentin loves what he does because he doesn’t consider it a job; he considers it a ‘calling.’ His dad and I are thankful for Q and his wife, Erin, and for all that he has accomplished thus far in his career. I’m sure there is more to come. The Cash family is truly a blessed family.” Said his brother Chad, of his brother’s year-long service as the NCSFA President, “We are so proud of my brother. Not many people know how many hours he poured into being the best representative he could be for all the
firefighters across the state of NC. He has so much passion for his job and I look up to him for all he has done and will continue to do in the fire service. He loves his family and community, and I can’t wait to see what he does next in his career.” Current Cherryville Fire Chief, Jason Wofford, said, “Quentin has represented himself, the Cherryville Fire Department, and the state fire service well during his tenure as President. He and the board have accomplished many things and we are very proud of his service. Quentin has a tremendous amount of passion for the fire service.” For his part, Quentin noted about the actual conference, which starts Tuesday, Aug. 9, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Raleigh Convention Center, “It is the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo, nicknamed SAFRE. It is the largest fire conference and expo in the South,” with roughly 4,500-plus people going through onto the expo floor. “We have roughly 50 classes over a three-day period, a large opening with a keynote speaker (retired Navy Seal Commander Rorke Denver) which includes our annual business meeting on Thursday, a second opening on Friday with another keynote speaker (retired US Deputy Fire Administrator Denis Onieal) and the rollout of our history

Said “Q”, “I get to pick the theme for the conference as President and pick the keynote speakers, among other things. With the release of the history project coming, I decided on ‘Learning from the Past and the Present to Progress into the Future’, #PastPresentProgress.” Cash noted the conference is largely managed by the seven staff members of the NCSFA with help from volunteers from the Raleigh Fire Department and “…lots of other volunteer departments in Wake County.” He said, “We also receive assistance from the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal. We could not put on a conference of this size without those group’s help.” Cash said there will be 20 family and fire department people coming from Cherryville and Darlington, SC (my wife Erin’s family location), up for the conference, adding that he will be presented a President’s plaque, a gold lifetime membership card, a President’s ring, and an old-school leather fire helmet that has a shield with the NCSFA logo, my name, title as President, and my year of service.” Quentin is proud of his past year of service noting the NCSFA “…has accomplished a number of important items but the most important by far was getting Firefighter Cancer Insurance legislation through the NC Legislature and funded at roughly $15 million over the next two years. The fire service has been working for over 10 years to get cancer legislation. “We also improved our members benefits by increasing our line of duty death benefits and a few other benefits at a lower

Wednesday, August 3, 2022 cost to the NCSFA. We have completed the sixyear long history project that will be introduced at the conference. It is a nice book that encompasses the entire 135-year history of the NCSFA that each department in the state will get a copy of, as well as Past Presidents, state dignitaries, the NC history archives and the National Fire Academy archives. We also restarted the NC Fire Service Summit group that will meet once a year and try to work on future potential challenges the NC Fire Service may face in the next 5 up to 25 years.” Quentin has been on the board for almost five years total and he said he will have one more year as Past President of the nine-member board. “My responsibilities will largely be the same as my years before the President with the exception of assisting the new incoming President in learning and carrying out his new role. I will also be responsible for mentoring the newest Board member on how the NCSFA and the Board works. I continue to be a voting member on all pertinent issues as well as delivering scholarships, representing the NCSFA at regional meetings, and
delivering Line of Duty Death checks.” He is still the Battalion Chief of Operations of C-Crew at the City of Shelby Fire and Rescue Department and still volunteers and fills in at the Cherryville Fire Department, he said. Of his years serving on the NCFSA Board, Cash said, “As far as serving on the Board, it has been one of the highlights – if not the highlight – of my career in the fire service so far. I served with many other great firefighters from the across the state. “Erin and I have made some great memories and even better friends that are now like family. I have traveled all over every part of the state, as well as traveled nationally for other service organization conferences including Indianapolis, IN; Atlanta, GA; Jackson, WY; and will be heading to San Antonio, TX, in about three weeks. I feel honored, fortunate and blessed to have had the opportunity to serve the firefighters of NC, and I feel like we have been able to grow the organization and the benefits to our members, which was my goal when I started out.”
Quentin Cash speaks at his swearing in as 134th President of the NCSFA at the Aug. 12, 2021 North Carolina State Firefighters Association (NCSFA)/North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs (NCAFC) Annual Conference in Raleigh.

when my time comes? Growing up I didn’t attend too many funerals unless they were for family. I do remember watching TV with my parents and witnessing the funeral of famous people. My earliest memory was the funeral of President Nixon. I remember how during the funeral all his great accomplishments were listed, opening China, ending the Vietnam War, and starting the EPA. Then as soon as the funeral was over the news anchor went into a rant about the Watergate Scandal.
I soon realized that those with the most earthly success rarely are remembered well. Perhaps if we want to be, our focus shouldn’t be on earthly but heavenly success. Christ commanded us to love one another as He loved us. Which brings to mind another funeral I witnessed, of a person who embodied heavenly success. I was in high school. The funeral was for the woman who kept me while my mother went back to school. Her name was Mozelle. She had kept children for years but
a friend and I were the last of the toddlers she would keep. She didn’t have all the bells and whistles of a modern daycare. She didn’t even have a playground, just a sand pile with Country Crock butter containers. Yet we, like all the other children before us, received top notch care and were loved. Her funeral, like her home, was humble. There were no international guests, TV coverage or grand honors. A simple casket was surrounded by around 30 people. The minister was kind
and genuine. A young lady sang ‘Amazing Grace’. What stood out in my mind wasn’t the words of the service but the sobs of the people. These were the children, now grown, that she had cared for. Each tear that fell was a reflection of the loved she showered us with. Each sniffle was a responsive ‘I love you’. Folks, I believe that is how we should all hope to be remembered. Remembered in love.
Delayed Cherryville Area not denied! Places of Worship
How patient are you? I can give plenty of examples of how I don’t always utilize patience. When I get ready to check out at a store, I always look for the shortest line, or I’ll just go to the self checkout. While driving, I will take the side roads, because I don’t want to sit in non-moving traffic, and I like fast-food restaurants, especially if there are just a DANYALE PATTERSON few cars that seem to be steadily moving. Now, don’t judge me; I know I am not alone. In fact, multiple businesses have skyrocketed into billionaire status, because they have capitalized on the masses’ desire to want things quickly and conveniently. Two Different Time Zones I have learned that God’s timetable and my timetable are usually on two different schedules. This is because God lives and operates in the realm of eternity. He is not hindered or limited by time. Psalm 90:4 (GNT) says “A thousand years to you are like one day; they are like yesterday, already gone, like a short hour in the night.” Since many of us don’t like to wait, we get upset with God or discouraged. However, God has a remedy for our agitation - Patience, a fruit of the Spirit. It means the capacity to accept or tolerate delay and discomfort without getting angry or upset. Colossians 1:11 (CEV) says, “His glorious power will make you patient and strong enough to endure anything, and you will be truly happy.” It Will Come To Pass This walk of faith with the Lord requires patience. I am here to encourage you to not give up the faith! If it is God’s will for your life; it will come to pass! Recently, I applied for a certain position. I received not one interview, but two! The hiring manager told me that he would get back with me. Then, there was silence, so I followed up with an email - still I didn’t get a response from him. As I waited, I proclaimed God’s will to be done and asked the Lord to keep my heart in peace. Finally, I was offered the position! The hiring manager apologized to me, because he had taken a vacation and was out of the office. Although I hadn’t heard back immediately, the job was already mine. Instead of worrying, God wanted me to praise him and trust him. Delayed doesn’t mean denied! Romans 8:25 says, (NLT) “But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I praise you for being patient with me and my shenanigans. You are compassionate, slow to anger and full of mercy. I ask that you forgive me for being impatient with you, others, and circumstances. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that lives in me. Please remind me to surrender to you, so you can produce the fruit in my life of love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, humility, faithfulness and self-control. I love you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you! Contact her at www.danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her to speak.

said they are all “100 percent volunteer”, just as he is for the department; in other words no one gets paid to do what they do for their little community or any of the others nearby to which they lend mutual aid with personnel and equipment. They are, like other departments, having a bit of a problem – warm bodies (in the way of volunteers and workers) are very hard to come by in this postCOVID world. “We’re proud we are a 100 percent volunteer force,” said Rayfield, adding the force there was “20-strong!” Rayfield, a 2014 CHS

graduate, has been with the CFD for a number of years, but has only been a captain there for a year. As far as HPVFD’s crew and their training are concerned, Rayfield noted they have to have “…at least 36 hours per year, which is required by the state in order to remain on the state’s roster of active fire departments. We have to do this every year.” Rayfield said he will soon have his Associates in Fire Protection Technology and hopes to have his Bachelor’s degree, which he plans to take at either Western Carolina University or Eastern Kentucky University. He said his parents – Mom Roxanne and his late father, Timothy, have always been very supportive of his being a firefighter. He has a sister, Kasey and an older brother, Ryan, and he was raised as a Baptist. As for the HPVFD, Rayfield noted that former Chief Vance left them in “good shape”. “I would like to work on getting more volunteers. That’s the struggle right now; not just here, but everywhere, for smaller departments,” he said. “We have reached out on social media and have had a couple of interested individuals. It’s all about us building a better rapport with our community; everyone we serve,” he said.
Hugh’s Pond VFD Chief Trent Rayfield stand beside their biggest truck, in the department’s equipment bay. Hugh’s Pond, according to “Bam Bam”, has a response time of about three and a half minutes, which is roughly what small VFD’s average. Still, he said, “We still need more personnel!” When asked about his Hanna-Barbera cartoon Flintstone’s character-related nickname, Rayfield smiled and told the following story, “When I was about one and half to two years old, he was over to a neighbor’s house with a wiffle baseball bat in his hand, hitting things with it, so a friend of his mom’s gave him the handle and it has stuck ever since. Rayfield’s hobbies, when he isn’t answering fire calls or on duty at CFD or HPVFD, include dirt track racing and fishing; not in that order, mind you.
“I do a little fishing when I can find the time,” he said, with a bit of a smile. One thing young Rayfield is definitely serious about is getting more volunteers. “Anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer at Hugh’s Pond, or any fire department, really, or is interested in working as a volunteer firefighter at Hugh’s Pond, can call us at (704) 435-5642, or email us at hughspond@yahoo. com. Said Chief Rayfield, “We think of ourselves as a family here, so we are looking for any volunteers to join and become a part of our family!”

Post 100’s 2022 season ends with state tournament at Campbell University Team’s overall record is 27-13; 2-1 in the playoffs by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
Post 100’s 2022 season came to an end at Campbell University’s beautiful Jim Perry Stadium. In spite of having won two of their three state tournament games last week, they lost the tie breaker in the pool play scenario, which is based on runs given up by a team. That said, Post 100’s ball club and their coaches did a great job and had an excellent year, finishing their season with a 27-13 overall record. In Game One, against Hope Mills Post 32, Post 100 won last Tuesday, July 26, by a score of 6-4. The winning pitcher was Joseph Webb, who struck out 11 Post 32 batters and walked only one. Hitters and those who got on base for Coach Reynolds’ ball team were (in their batting order): Landon Hahn (2-4); Zane Brockman (walked); Cole Irby (1-4, a double, an RBI, on due to an error); Ashton Pope (got on base due to an error); Landon Jenkins (2-3, an RBI); Jacob Hamrick (1-3); Will Blackburn (2-3, a double, an RBI, and scored on a wild pitch); Reid Stroupe (1-3, an RBI, and hit by a pitch) and Collin Robinson (a walk, scored). The men got their six runs off of nine hits. In Game Two’s Wednesday, July 27, action against Fuquay-Varina Post 116, the Post 100 men lost 3-10. They bounced back on Thursday, July 28 in the Game Three Post 100 won 7-3 against Randolph County Post 45. It was a very hot day and Coach Reynolds’ starting pitcher (and the winning pitcher as well) was Kings Mountain product, Zane Brockman. Brockman struck

CHILD CARE
READY, SET, LEARN! PRESCHOOL. Hi families! I’ve recently started an in-home, small group private preschool or mom’s morning out program for little ones ages 18 months to 4 years old in Cleveland County. Our inhome preschool program is unique. We aren’t your traditional family child care program but we also are not a center preschool program. We are the best of both worlds…a small, close knit, home-like environment that offers rich, hands on, educational opportunities for preschool aged children to help prepare them for kindergarten success & beyond. If you’re looking for a halfday preschool, we’d love to have your little one join us At Ready, Set, Learn! Preschool to get a head start on “learning to love and loving to learn”. TO TASK Page 2 In a statement July 13, Truitt, a Republican, criticized Cooper for the veto. She said that S.B. 593 received widespread input to reach consensus, including from the Department of Public Instruction, the three current directors of the schools, and from other stakeholders. “This is an important piece of legislation that has been properly vetted, thoroughly discussed among
The Cherryville Eagle
multiple partners, and written while keeping the blind and deaf students of our state front and center,” said Truitt. “Unfortunately, without this legislation becoming law, these schools will not be in a sustainable position to provide the sound and basic education that our blind and deaf students deserve, and their families should expect to receive.” “The decision by the Governor to take a political stand on a decades-long issue was not in the best interest of these children,” Truitt added.
The superintendent encouraged lawmakers to take up a veto override when the General Assembly returns to Raleigh July 26. “Passage of S.B. 593 reflected a good-faith, bipartisan effort to improve governance of the schools for blind and deaf children,” said Dr. Terry Stoops, director of the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation. “Gov. Cooper is out of touch with the broad coalition of elected officials and stakeholders who supported this legislation.”

Gaston Co. man wins $25,000 a year for life RALEIGH – A Lucky for Life drawing delivered a $25,000 a year for life prize to William Mark Shellman of Gastonia. Shellman bought his lucky ticket for the June 21 drawing through Online Play. He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh last Friday and had the choice of receiving $25,000 a year each year for the rest of his life or a $390,000 lump sum. He chose the lump sum and
after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $276,940. Shellman won his prize by matching all five white balls. The odds of winning the $25,000 a year for life prize are one in 1,813,028. Lucky for Life is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC
Lottery Official Mobile App. Lucky for Life tickets are $2 and drawings are held every night. Ticket sales from draw games make it possible for the lottery to raise an average of $2.5 million a day for education. For details on how $14.7 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Gaston County in 2021, visit www. nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

DYSB has four All-Star teams in State Tournament
LANIE PHILBECK AND KYLIE REYNOLDS (photo provided)
East-West All-Star 2022 Cheerleaders Cherryville High School cheerleaders Lani Philbeck and Kylie Reynolds were selected as East-West AllStar Cheerleaders for 2022. Each year NCCCA hosts a live tryout in Burlington. Only girls that have previously been selected as All-Region Cheerleaders are eligible. As members of the NCCCA All-State team they traveled to Burlington and Greensboro and put in 12-14-hour days practicing to prepare a competition level routine and to learn
cheers. During their 5-day stay they cheered for both the girls and guys East-West All-Star basketball games and the football team. They performed their routine at the NCCCA Coaches Conference and at each game. This experience allows them to work with top choreographers and coaches. The experience is like packing an entire season into five days. Only a select few juniors from member schools were selected.
The Cherryville Dixie Girls Softball organization had four All-Star teams to participate in the Dixie Girls Softball State Tournament in Troy and Moore County, July 8-12. The girls played hard and made lots of memories. Congratulations to the Ponytails team who brought home the Sportsmanship trophy. The organization wants to say a BIG “Thank You” to the Spring season sponsors and to those who sponsored the All-Star teams. The ladies couldn’t play ball without their sponsors being their biggest fans, next to the parents. It is already time to gear up for the 2022 Fall Softball season. Registration forms will be given to all schools, preschools, and daycares in the area and be distributed when school begins. Registrations will be held at the Ballard Park Concessions area on Aug. 16, 18, 20, 23, 25, and 27. The Tues./ Thurs. times are 5:30-7:30 p.m., and Saturday’s time is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost: $35/ player. Cherryville Dixie Girls Softball is a non-profit organization with an elected Board of Directors who govern the organization. They are accepting nominations until Aug. 27 for the 2022-2023 fiscal year for any person who is interested in supporting the organization as a board member. The Election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Cherryville Fire Dept. Any parent who has a registered player may vote.
