New store, The Wild Cholla opens doors to Cherryville shoppers

Described as “a boutique with a beer and wine bar”, all in one place, or one shop

The Wild Cholla (pronounced “Choy-ah”, she noted) is, in her own words, “a boutique with a beer and wine bar”, all in one place, or one shop, if you will.

Hicks, the owner of The Wild Cholla, and fiance’, Gary Nadal, call Lawndale home, and have for the past 10 years, but both said they chose Cherryville as the location for her new shop, and eventually for his antiques store, which he is currently working to get opened up after Randi’s store gets really going.

“I’m originally from Seagrove, N.C.,” said Randi, who noted that she and Gary were in the process of trying to find a place to open a business that wasn’t in a large city, as

they both liked and wanted a small-town vibe to their businesses. To that end, she said her store is a family-owned and operated business, at least for now.

As for how she came upon finding and using the Wild Cholla name, Hicks said, “I wanted to have a (business) name that wasn’t like anybody else. Also, this is the first business I have ever owned; I like clothes, and I have a passion for style,” said Hicks, who was formerly in the health care profession.

“I’m a people person, having worked, as I said, in

health care in High Point, and having my own business was something I always wanted to do,” she said.

Having her own business is all part of Hicks’ main miracle-laced personal history, as she said she was diagnosed with Stage 0-1 breast cancer on October 2022, on Halloween.

“There was a mass about five inches in diameter that they found, and it was a shocker, of course. I never felt it or anything but a small twinge of pain before I was diagnosed,” said Hicks, who added she had a double mas-

The week of July 24, three CF Media-area sheriffs attended the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association Annual Business Conference. They were Gaston County Sheriff, and former Cherryville Police Chief, Chad Hawkins, Cleveland County Sheriff, Alan Norman, and Lincoln County Sheriff, Bill Beam.

In a July 31, 2023 media release, Eddie Caldwell , Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, noted the association hosted sheriffs, sheriffs’ personnel and their families from across the state for their Annual Business Conference.

Stated Mr. Caldwell, “The Annual Business Conference is an opportunity for sheriffs

and sheriffs’ personnel to gather for networking, panel discussions, and training programs which cover a variety of topics related to law enforcement.”

Topics covered during this year’s Annual Business Conference, he noted, “… included the sheriff’s role in school safety and active shooter response procedures, among others.”

He also noted attendees heard presentations from guest speakers and attended a number of meetings throughout the conference. The Association also elects new Executive Committee officers each year at the conference, said Caldwell.

“This year’s elections resulted in five sheriffs being elected to new offices: President – Sheriff Darren Campbell, Iredell County; First Vice President – Sheriff Mike Roberson, Chatham County; Second Vice President –Sheriff Ricky Buchanan, McDowell County; Third Vice President – Sheriff Clee Atkinson, Edgecombe County; and Treasurer – Sheriff Van Shaw, Cabarrus County.”

Committee and Sheriff Alan Jones, Caldwell County, was reelected to serve as Secretary. Newly elected Association President Campbell said, “The Annual Business Conference is always an excellent opportunity for sheriffs to get together to discuss important issues we are facing, network, and conduct Association business. I am excited for the opportunity to serve as the President of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association and hope to help enhance public safety in our communities while representing the sheriffs of North Carolina.”

She and Gary share four children: Konner Morgan (18); Emily Nadal (17); Grayson Hicks (13); and daughter, Peyton Hicks (12). The kids will be helping out at the family’s shops, she and Gary noted when things get going and as they can, when they aren’t in class at Lincoln

Charter, or, in Konner’s case, pursuing a career as a lineman. He is also interested in cars, he said.

Hicks said she and Gary looked in Lincolnton and elsewhere around the area, trying to find a building large enough to put a bar into, she said.

On a chance meeting with artist and designer Jhoan Alfaro, who sent them to Vickie Spurling, of Vickie Spurling Realty, Randi and Gary were

shown the two buildings they currently occupy. The buildings are located at 205 and 207 N. Mountain Street, and are unique in their own right, with all sorts of eclectic charm and just the right amount of space the two were needing.

Said Randi, “Once we are finished with this building (the 207 location), we will shut the entrance and the only

CFD can no longer unlock vehicles except in emergency situations

Cherryville Fire Chief Jason Wofford said he and his staff want to let the citizens of Cherryville and the surrounding area they service know that, effective immediately, their department, and possibly other departments as well, will no longer be able to unlock vehicles, except in emergency situations that involve life safety. Chief Wofford said last week in an interview with the Eagle that, due to state regulations and licensing laws as well as liability issues, the decision was made.

Said Chief Wofford, in an official statement, “The Cherryville Fire Department will stop providing the service to unlock cars. This is due to rising liability issues, and now a state licensing requirement. The Cherryville Fire Department is only allowed to unlock cars for emergency

purposes only. The types of emergency situations are children, animals, and medicine locked in vehicles. We hope citizens will understand the change in service, but it is unavoidable. There are several Locksmiths that service our area. We urge everyone to purchase a hide-a-key or give relatives and/or friends an extra key that can help them

if they are ever in need.”

Virginia Sherlin

SHELBY – Virginia Carpenter Finley Sherlin, 97, of Shelby passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023 in Raleigh.

Born at home on Nov. 16, 1925 in Cherryville, she was the daughter of the late Lawson Carpenter and Bertie Biggerstaff Carpenter. Virginia graduated from Cherryville High School in 1943 and attended Geyer Business College in Charlotte, where she and her husband, Calvin Finley worked and raised their family.

In the early 1940’s Virginia worked at the Oak Ridge project in Tennessee for two (2) years. After returning to Charlotte, she joined US Casualty Company, later named Security Insurance Group, and was employed there for 37 years, and became a licensed claims adjuster and worker’s compensation supervisor. She was one of the first women in Charlotte to become a licensed adjuster. During those years she received several recognitions and awards, including being presented with the Gold Rose Award as the outstanding Charlotte Woman in the Field of Insurance by the Central Charlotte Association of

Most meaningful to Virginia was involvement in the church. As a child, she was a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church in Cherryville, a church attended by many of her ancestors. In Charlotte, her church became Kilgo United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, Chairman of Christian Social Relations, and president of the United Methodist Women of 5 years. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bethlehem Community Center for Children in Charlotte, serving as secretary.

When Virginia returned to Cherryville, she once again became a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she remained for the rest of her life. As well as serving as Sunday School teacher at Bethlehem for many years, she joined the United Methodist Women and served as secretary. She has also served on the Nominating Committee, Witness and Outreach Committee and was once a member of the choir. Outside the church, gardening, and line dancing were two things she enjoyed immensely.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Calvin Finley;

A funeral service was held Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023 at 2:30 p.m., at Bethlehem Community Church. The Rev. Roy T. Byers officiated.

The burial followed the service in the Bethlehem Community Church Cemetery.

Mary Ann Beam Huffstetler

CHERRYVILLE – On a beautiful Saturday evening, Aug. 5, Mary Ann Beam

Huffstetler left her frail body and became a citizen of God’s glorious kingdom. Now she is celebrating with her mother and daddy and her two big sisters and two big brothers who she adored. Our hearts are broken but we rejoice in the knowledge that one day soon, by the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we too will join that happy band.

Mary Ann graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1957 and attended Limestone College. She married Palmer E. Huffstetler on Aug. 9, 1958. Mary Ann was born at her parents’ home place in Kings Mountain, N.C., on Nov. 29, 1938. She started school barely one block from her home at West School on Mountain Street. At about age 7 she began to take piano lessons and became quite adept in playing that instrument. In her early years she played piano for the Wednesday night prayer service at Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. She continued formal piano instruction until she reached the age of 14. Although she played with unusual feeling and expression, she played only for her personal enjoyment. She was an excellent basketball player at Kings Mountain High School where she lettered in both her junior and senior years. Mary Ann was selected to play on the Cleveland County All-Star team with another teammate. The two guards held their opponent’s star to only 17 points, well below

her average of 45 points per game. In her junior year she was tapped as a member of The National Honor Society and named a Junior Marshall in recognition of her superior leadership and academic skills. In her senior year she was elected Queen of May by the students of KMHS. Mary Ann was named a delegate to Girls’ State at UNC Greensboro and was also a delegate to the NC National Honor Society Convention in Durham, NC, in 1957. She was named a debutante and made her debut before Western North Carolina Society in Shelby in 1957. She began courting her future husband on New Year’s Eve night, 1951. After attending Limestone College, she and Palmer were married at Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain.

Palmer entered Wake Forest Law School that Fall and Mary Ann became the secretary to the Director of Admissions at Wake Forest (Dr. Louis Aycock) and the Assistant Director (W.G. Starling). She held that position for the three-year period Palmer attended law school. Following the couple’s residency in Winston-Salem, they lived in Kings Mountain, Orlando, Raleigh, and Cherryville, where they have resided since 1964. Mary Ann concentrated her time on rearing their three sons but also found time to actively serve her church and assist in her sons’ school activities. At First United Methodist Church she served in various capacities including choir member, Sunday school teacher, worship committee member, pictorial church directory chair, and as a member of the sanctuary committee during the construction of the new church facility in 1971-72. In addition, she served as vacation church school director and as a teacher. She was a member of the Aunt Pearl Harrelson Circle and later the Ida Wright Circle at Cherryville First United Methodist Church.

Mary Ann and Palmer enjoyed traveling with their children and grandchildren and, in their later years, in

the western states, the South Carolina beaches, and Florida. She had a lifetime love of music, often spending hours at her piano playing classical selections, Broadway hits, and romantic songs of the 1940s and 1950s. During the early 2000s she displayed her writing skills while penning several essays on special stories of her youth. Her expressions were open and heartfelt with feeling and emotion.

Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, her three sons, Palmer, Jr. (Tiffne), Ben (Pam), and Tad; three grandchildren (Palmer III, Alice Ann, and Benjamin Beam); two great-grandchildren (Sadie Grace and Eliza); and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her as a gracious and caring person who shared an unforgettable smile with everyone she greeted.

She was preceded in death by two sisters (Dorothy Harrill, and Margaret Harmon) and two brothers (Walter and Bill Harmon), as well as her parents, Ben and Sarah Mae Beam.

A Memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Zack Christy officiating. The family received friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m., prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. A private burial service will be held in Kings Mountain at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family extends its gratitude and deep appreciation to the management and staff of Peak Resources, Cherryville for their kindness and warm, encouraging support during Mary Ann’s time there.

Ms. Smith and a passenger said they were traveling south on Mountain St., through the intersection of Main St., and they further advised their lane of travel showed a green light, signaling they could continue through the intersection, at which point they were struck by the Nontell vehicle on the front right corner of their vehicle. The responding officer viewed the stop and go signal to be functioning properly at the time he was w/both parties. He also checked w/ local businesses for any video footage or witnesses to the crash, but none were located. No injuries reported. 7-29: A vehicle driven by Robert Kern Kiser, 72, 708 N. Mountain St., Cherryville, and a vehicle driven by Kimber Rose Thomas, 22, 1057 Saint Mark’s Church Rd., Cherryville, collided at the entrance of Bud Black Rd.,

7-31: A vehicle owned and driven by Serenity Lashae Finger, no age given, 1768 Buffalo Run, Lincolnton, was involved in an accident at an apartment complex parking lot on Mauney Street. Ms. Finger told the responding officer that her vehicle was left running in the parking lot of the apartment complex w/her infant child secured inside. She stated the vehicle started to roll backward down the hill of the parking lot area and into the street. As it did so, the driverless vehicle continued to roll down Mauney St., across Academy St., then ran off the shoulder of the roadway into a large roadside hole causing damage to the car. Ms. Finger stated the vehicle was in park and was uncertain as to how it could roll in that position. No injuries reported. Est. damages: $4,000. The Finger vehicle was towed by Sawyer’s Towing to Sawyer’s Towing.

8-2: A vehicle driven by Jason Edil Espinal, 24, 8613 Wellington Ln., Harrisburg, NC, was backing up on Watts St., and hit an electrical wire. The vehicle pulled the wire from a residence at 706 Craig St., causing damage to the electrical box and assembly mounted on the house. The vehicle is a rental truck insured by Queen City Delivery Corp., located at 525 N. Tryon St., Charlotte. No injuries reported. Est. damages to the electrical panel and assembly on house: $5,500.

On Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023 Gaston County Police detectives and specialists with Animal Care and Enforcement, assisted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) executed a search warrant at a residence located at 945 E. 6th Ave., Gastonia, as part of a dog fighting investigation. The search warrant was the result of a nearly two-month long investigation into a report of numerous dogs at the location being used for dog fight-

The first two things folks will notice there will be the expertly repainted old sign for The Cherryville Ice and Fuel Company, repainted by artist and teacher and City Councilman, Gary Freeman. The next thing will be the amazing wooden ceiling rafters and beams, which lend the building its own distinct charm. They echo the neighboring Cherryville Family YMCA’s wooden rafters, exposed and preserved by entrepreneur, Patrick O’Leary, who also owned the buildings Randi and Gary are in now. Randi said she is still getting merchandise in, but noted the store’s hours are as follows: Closed on Monday; Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Randi noted she made all of the frames for the cacti and western-themed prints adorning her walls. Fiance’ Gary, who has been in the antiques business, with his father in Banner Elk and before, in Florida, said she chooses what she wants for

The Wild Cholla as befits her sense of style. Some of the antiques in the TWC are his, and he noted that at some point he wants to open an antique store in the back part of the building, naming it “Back Door Antiques.”

Randi said some of the jeans lines she carries are Kan Can, Vervet, Flying Monkey, Petra, and Wisteria Lane.

Shoe brands are Very-G, and wedge sandals, slide sandals, and flip-flops by various makers.

A brief dissertation on growing old, er, older…

We have come to that stage in our lives when we have suddenly realized we are old. O-L-D! Old. That’s right. You read that right… OLD! With a capital “O”!

Now, my wife, God love her… who will no doubt read this, will roll her pretty green eyes, then proceed to berate me and otherwise “confusticate” with me over calling her “old.” It’s OK when I call myself old, but when I lump her in that august group, well, then the kid gloves come off and the verbal boxing gloves get pulled on and off she goes… duking it out with me verbally, of course, about the fact she is still younger than me (which she will, of course, always be…), and just who do I think I am by even broaching that horrible subject anyway!?

Does your doctor make you feel good?

Does he or she tell you what you want to hear just to make you happy? If so, you probably should look for another doctor.

No one enjoys leaving the doctor’s office feeling bad. We don’t want to hear, “You need to change your lifestyle.” We don’t want to hear, “You need to cut way back on your sugar intake.” We enjoy our habits. Habits are hard to break. My wife’s grandfather loved smoking. He wouldn’t give it up even after numerous cancer surgeries. He died at age 65.

A friend died recently. She died from what is often called fatty liver disease. Six months before she died, she told me she was terminal. She said, “I guess I drank too much alcohol throughout my lifetime.” She went on to tell me that her family doctor two years prior had said her issue wasn’t severe and that she didn’t have to worry.” She was very displeased with her doctor’s passive attitude

about her condition that would soon take her life.

Another friend of mine was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His doctor’s approach to his condition was that, “They would watch it. When it became worse, they would do something about the cancer.” They watched it and they watched it kill my friend. Within a year it was out of control and had spread outside his prostate. The doctor’s relaxed attitude about a serious situation did not go well for my friend.

Many doctors want to make you feel good. Of course, we don’t want a doctor whose goal is to make us feel bad. Typically, they don’t want to lose you as a patient. Still, they should diplomatically tell you what you may not want to hear.

Keep in mind the doctor ordinarily knows more than we do. However, YOU do know how you feel. Be aware of your family history. In this information age you have to do some self-study. There is a lot of information on-line about most conditions you are facing. You have to research thoroughly though because often you can find whatever response you want on

the Internet. Ask your doctor questions about your research. Tell him or her that you want to make good choices. Be willing to travel to another town if your doctor refers you to do so, or to seek out someone who might be able to provide the care you need.

The bottom line is we have to take personal responsibility for our health and do the best we can. Even when we do everything we can think of to do, these bodies – our bodies – are subject to disease and death.

Richard Thousand is with the Taussig Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic. He was recently talking to me about the many medical advances made in recent years and noted more are on the way. He then said something I had only heard my dad say many times, “Glenn, we aren’t going to get out of this world alive. From the moment we are born, there is something that is trying to kill us. Eventually, it’s going to happen.”

The bottom line is do the best we can with the information we have. Be diligent. Be thorough. Seek the truth from your doctor. Finally, enjoy your life.

After all… we all only get one.

I mean, I have sworn off so many vices that I can barely remember what my life was like when I was a young man of 25 or 30-ish; not

that I was a wild and crazy guy, like Steve Martin likes to say, even then. Oh well! Anyway. Truth of the matter, when you step on a scale to weigh and you can’t see the numbers because of, well… just because, then you do need to make some changes. Which I am looking into. Honest! I am! Really…

And, I will do my best to keep all y’all updated on how all that progresses. Seriously. I will. Really... Just as soon as I finish this sandwich! Grow old gracefully, and healthfully, y’all!

As a retired teacher now working as a substitute teacher and tutor it is not a secret that I love summer. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love being retired, but I also love being in the education field on a parttime basis and have my summers free. To me it is the best of both worlds.

Summer has always been special to me even when years ago I had to help work in the garden and assist my mom in the kitchen to can the vegetables. I would always help her, and it was a good feeling when I grew older to work beside her in such a special way. I also loved being able to stay up longer and get up later that was allowed in the summer when school was not in session.

When I was growing

up I always wanted my mom to read to me. She had such a good reading voice, and I could imagine what was happening as she read with such expression. She would read to me later in the afternoon in the summer when her many chores were finished and before she started our evening meal.

Summer was also a good time for me to follow my two older brothers around. As typical teenagers they weren’t thrilled to have a younger sister following them, but they did look after me every day.

I was very close to them, and I realized later how good they actually were to me. They put up with a little sister tagging after them many days without complaints. They have both

been in heaven for years, along with my parents, and I miss all of them so much. These summer days have been very good now. My husband, Tommy loves to have a garden, and he does a fantastic job raising vegetables for us to enjoy. I admire the hard work he puts into growing a garden, and he never complains about it. He loves to plant the seeds and water them and watch them sprout through the ground. I think it makes him feel closer to God, watching a garden grow. Of course, many people take their vacations in the summer and journey to the beaches or the mountains for fun and relaxation. It does a person good to rest and relax and take a break for a while. I encourage students to get some rest and relax because school is right around the corner and will be here before we realize it.

I wrote an article about always using words to share the Gospel. While I stand by that opinion, someone shared the following passage from Matthew 7:21-23. 21; “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord,

Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (NKJV).

So, the question arose – do words or actions matter for salvation?

(Part 2 of “ROLLER COASTERS” Series)

The click, clack, clack continued as my husband and I rode up the hill on the wooden roller coaster; it sounded like the ride would either break down or that we wouldn’t make it up the track, but we survived. I found out later that the clanging we heard was from a protection mechanism that is called anti-rollback dogs. These devices keep the train secure and from rolling backward. How ironic….the sound that made us uncomfortable and scared was actually for our benefit. This reminds me of how the Israelites responded to God’s voice. Exodus 20:18-21 (NASB) says, “And all the people were watching and hearing the thunder and the lightning flashes, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it all, they trembled and stood at a distance. Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but do not have God speak to us, or we will die!” However, Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you so that you will not sin.” So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.”

Unusual Doesn’t Mean Bad I can only imagine how the Israelites felt when they experienced something different than what they were accustomed to. The power and glory that God was displaying could make anyone afraid. However, Moses wasn’t afraid; he drew near to God, but the Israelites pulled away from God. The Israelites are in good company; how many of us miss out on the opportunity to not only hear God more clearly and more often but also to have a closer relationship with God, because it’s not what we are familiar with, although we see that it’s in the bible. At that moment when God is speaking and drawing us to him, we can be attentive and ask him to have his way with us, or we can reject what he is doing and saying. The best choice is found in Luke 8:18 (NLT). Jesus states, “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Lord, like the four living creatures in the bible, I proclaim Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come! Father, thank you for the opportunity to be your child and to develop an intimate relationship with you. Forgive me when I have avoided going to the next level spiritually or I wasn’t on board when you tried to reveal another dimension of who you are. I pray I will always have ears to hear what the Spirit has to say.” In Jesus’ name, I pray - Amen.”

Obviously, if we deny Christ’s divinity, virgin birth, death, and resurrection, we are denying Jesus Christ. For the less obvious examples, let’s use the “…might be a redneck” model. We might be denying Christ if we nervously refuse to give our religious preference. We might be denying Christ if we keep silent when someone is in need of prayer. We might be denying Christ if we spend more time in political debate than prayer. We might be denying Christ if we can make it to

Walmart but not church. We might be denying Christ, if we can get our kids to every practice and event but not to youth church meetings. We might be denying Christ if we see people as anything other than made in God’s image. We might be denying Christ if we can name our favorite team’s starting lineup but not the Beatitudes. We might be denying Christ if we pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to see our favorite singer on stage, but do not tithe. We might be denying Christ if we adopt the kindness and understanding found in so many government

and religious meetings.

Just to be clear; Matthew’s Gospel tells us that Christ doubles down on this idea in chapter 10: 32, where it is written, “Everyone therefore who acknowledges Me before others, I also will acknowledge before My Father in heaven; 33 but whoever denies Me before others, I also will deny before My Father in heaven.” (NRSV)

So… the choice is ours; choose wisely.

Many state governors also have broad authority to staff departments, boards, and commissions with thousands of appointees. As of now, the governor of North Carolina appoints only 300. There are bills currently under consideration in the General Assembly to make that number even smaller.

I think the governor’s megaphone remains wide and loud even in our current social-media age.

In addition to this public-facing capability, many of our governors have also exercised tremendous influence behind the scenes among the lawmakers, Council of State members, and other public and private actors who set the agenda for policy debate in North Carolina.

Whether it was Luther Hodges selling the concept of the Research Triangle in the 1950s, governors of both parties pushing education reforms in the 1960s and 1970s, Republican Jim Martin working with a Democratic legislature to restructure the state transportation system in the 1980s, or Democrat Jim Hunt hatching Smart Start and welfare reform in the 1990s, all these initiatives came to fruition before voters amended the constitution to give their governor veto power.

Since the turn of the century, we’ve seen Mike Easley, Bev Per-

due, Pat McCrory, and Roy Cooper enjoy both successes and failures. Having a veto strengthened their respective hands, to be sure, but each used appointments, public rhetoric, and private cajoling to good effect in at least one high-profile dispute with the legislative branch.

At this writing, the Republican field for 2024 contains Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, State Treasurer Dale Folwell, former U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, and Andy Wells, who currently serves on the state board of transportation. Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein is definitely running for his party’s nomination for governor, while Mike Morgan is reportedly thinking about it.

Each of these individuals has experience in other public offices. Each understands the limits of gubernatorial power – but still believes he can best serve North Carolina in the future by occupying that office. May the best leader win.

Gaston County Schools’ Good News for July 2023

Gaston County Schools received the prestigious Golden Eagle Award from the United Way of Gaston County. The award recognizes the school district’s outstanding participation in the United Way’s annual fundraising campaign.

Four individuals with a connection to Gaston County Schools were presented the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award by the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community. The award recipients include Kaitlyn Dockery, a fifth-grade student at W.A. Bess Elementary; Heather Vernitsky, PTO president at Springfield Elementary; Aubrey Bridges, a volunteer at Tryon Elementary School; and Flip Bombardier, a long-time mentor at York Chester Middle School.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association recognized the South Point High School boys’ soccer team and the boys’ tennis team for achieving the highest combined team grade point average in the state for their respective sports. Additionally, the South Point girls’ golf team and the Stuart W. Cramer High School girls’ golf team finished in a threeway tie for having the highest combined team grade point average in the state.
