It was a time for somber reflection – Cherryville’s Sept. 11th Remembrance Ceremony; the City’s 20th – held on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021 at 9 a.m., at the Cherryville Fire Department. City Manager/Fire Chief Jeff Cash said, after welcoming everyone who came, they do this once again in memory of the 2,977 innocent civilians; 343 NYFD firefighters; 27 NYPD officers; and 37 New York Port Authority officers; who were mur-

dered at the hands of a small group of radical religious fanatics. All perished when the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers crashed to the earth in New York City, and in the Pentagon, and on a quiet field in Pennsylvania. Cash spoke of how their department, along with 1,356 fire departments in the state, took up money for the NYFD and NYPD, and how they collected $500,000 for them. “We gave them a check for $300,000 and took them five vans for their use,” he said. He also told of his own personal feelings about being up there helping out when a whistle blew, halting work on the buildings’ wreckage, stopping everything because seven sets of remains had been found

beneath some of the rubble. Cash also lifted high a piece of the terrazzo flooring of one of the towers given him by one of the NYFD chiefs in honor of what the NC firefighters did for their fellow firefighters. Councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem Jill Parker-Puett, an EMS worker for 27 years, spoke, praising all firefighters, police, and EMTs everywhere for their sacrifices on a daily basis. Cherryville Police Chief Cam Jenks led everyone in the “Pledge of Allegiance” while the CHS Marching Ironmen band, under the direction of Director Mark Ewing, performed “The National Anthem”, and “Taps”. Test results for the 20202021 academic year confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant effect on student achievement in Gaston County and across North Carolina, according to information released by the North Carolina State Board of Education. Statewide, student proficiency rates on end-of-year and end-of-course tests were lower for all tested grade levels and subject areas when compared to data from the 2018-2019 year, the last year when students took state tests, according to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. End-of-year tests were not administered for the 20192020 year after the pandemic forced the closure of school buildings and halted in-person instruction in March 2020.

Cherryville High School was one of six Gaston County schools with a graduation rate that exceeds 90 percent. CHS’ score was 92.0 percent. “Everyone realizes the pandemic has affected all aspects of school, including academic achievement, accountability, and testing so it is not surprising to have test results that indicate lower student proficiency,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. W. Jeffrey Booker. “The state end-of-grade and endof-course tests are designed to measure student learning based on typical face-to-face classroom instruction during the school year. Because of the pandemic, 2020-2021 was an atypical academic year. The modified schedule

reduced the amount of in-person instruction at school and forced us to rely on remote and virtual learning at home.” Dr. Booker continued, “Because of the unprecedented circumstances we have experienced, we know the test results for 2020-2021 do not give a full picture of the academic ability of our students. Elizabeth Shull CHERRYVILLE – Illa Elizabeth “Lib” Simpson Shull, 83, of West Church St., passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 at Atrium – Cleveland. She was born Sept. 14, 1937, in Lincoln County to the late John and Brite Elizabeth White Simpson. Lib was an amazing woman who cared tremendously about her family and friends. She always thought of others before herself. Her world revolved around her grandchildren whom she adored dearly. A few things that she enjoyed included cooking, getting her hair done at the beauty salon, and shopping. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Kenneth Shull, Sr.; daughter, Brenda Kay Shull; brothers, Ralph, Cone, Max, Jerry, Forrest, and Ken Simpson; and sisters, Edna Simpson Fourshee, and Annalee Simpson Moody. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Cathy Ann Shull; son, Jerry Kenneth Shull Jr. (Roxanne Reynolds); grandchildren, Elizabeth Shull (Quinton Hollar), Johnny Reynolds Jr.; Bayleigh Smith; great-grandchildren, Dominic Reynolds, and Dimaggio Reynolds; and great-great grandchildren, Braylon Reynolds, and Amilya Howze. Perry Jones SHELBY – Harold Perry Jones, 66, of Shelby, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021 at Atrium Health Cleveland. He was born Dec. 3, 1954 in Cleveland County to the late Howard Dean and Vera Lee Laws Jones. Perry was a 1973 graduate of Cherryville High School where he was an exceptional football player. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired from truck driving where he worked for 28 years with his brother, Mike, as a FedEx contractor. Perry loved Classic Rock and Oldies music and watching movies. He enjoyed going to Gatlinburg and spending time with his family. He was a people person and cherished time spent with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Josh Jones. Survivors include his son, Austin Brent Jones of Shelby; daughter, Amber (Jones) Rauch and husband, Dale, of Gastonia; brothers, Don Jones and wife, Markie, Dee Jones and wife, Susan, and Mike Jones and wife, Barbara; and nephews and nieces, Scott, Jeff, David, Angie, Mark, Deana, Shane and Steve. Patricia Payne Eaker CHERRYVILLE – Patricia Payne Eaker, 79, of Cherryville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at her home. She left us peacefully, surrounded by family. She was born Patricia Sue Payne Oct. 30, 1941, in Salisbury, N.C., the daughter of the late Loris Beam Payne Vernon and the late William Carl Payne. Patricia (Pat) was married 61 adventurous years to Guy Howard Eaker, Sr. Pat was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cherryville, N.C. She was a devoted wife, an amazing mother, grandmother, and a trusted friend. Pat was a fabulous cook and the most selfless, sweetest person anyone would be blessed to know. Her love, sense of humor, and dedication to the Lord and her family was obvious to all who knew or met her. She will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Guy H. Eaker, Sr.; her son, Guy H. Eaker, Jr., of Cornelius, N.C.; her daughter, Carla Eaker Truluck of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Guy H. Eaker, III; and Caroline Eaker Perry; great-grandchildren: Noah, Apollo and Josie; her half-sister, Rebecca Phillips of Hickory, N.C., and her grand-dog, Courtney Truluck, whom she absolutely adored. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Payne, and her half-brother, Bobby Vernon. A private family service will be held soon. KIRBY From Page 1 passing on Jan. 23, 2021, Judge Kirby resided in Cherryville for more than five decades where he and June, his late wife of 59 years, raised their three sons, Robert Jr., Chris, and Greg. He was a faithful and active member of the First United Methodist Church of Cherryville; and, WHEREAS, Judge Kirby served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.” The proclamation noted Judge Kirby “… earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from High Point University and his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law” and “… He practiced law in Gastonia and Cherryville prior to being appointed as a Gaston County Solicitor. He became a District Court Judge in 1968 and was elected as a Superior Court Judge for the 27-A Judicial District in 1974. He remained on the Superior Court Bench until he retired in 2000. After retirement, he held court sometimes as an emergency judge and also developed a suc-

It is our hope that we have as normal of a school year as possible in 2021-2022 despite the ongoing pandemic.” The preliminary test results released by the state on Sept. 1, provide information about the graduation rate for the Class of 2021 and student proficiency for the 20202021 academic year. State tests were administered in the following subject areas to determine proficiency: reading and math for grades 3-8, science for grades 5 and 8, and Math I, Math III, Biology, and English II for high schools. The preliminary results for 2020-2021 do not include information about academic growth and school performance grades. The requirement to report academic growth (whether schools met growth, exceeded growth, or did not meet growth expectations for the year) and school performance grades (the assignment of an A, B, C, D, or F letter grade to schools based on various accountability and testing factors) was waived by the state and federal government. Graduation rate The Gaston County graduation rate for the Class of 2021 is 86.5 percent. Six schools have a graduation rate that exceeds 90 percent: Gaston Early College (100 percent), Gaston County Virtual Academy (100 percent), Highland (100 percent), Cherryville (92.0 percent), South Point (91.8 percent), and Ashbrook (91.0 percent). North Gaston had the

most significant increase (+3.4) when compared to last year. Over a three-year period, North Gaston’s graduation rate has risen 6.1 points, going from 82.6 percent in 2019 to 88.7 this year. Cherryville (+4.3) and South Point (+1.7) also saw an increase in the graduation rate over three years. Called the four-year cohort graduation rate, it reflects the percentage of students who entered the ninth grade in 2017-2018 and graduated four years later in May 2021. The four-year graduation rate is not the same as the dropout rate, which indicates the number of students who drop out of high school in a given year. When the state first calculated the four-year cohort graduation rate in 2005-2006, Gaston County’s rate was a mere 68.1 percent. It is important to note that Gaston’s current graduation rate of 86.5 percent is higher than the rate of 84.9 percent in 2018-2019, which was the last “normal” school year before the pandemic hit. Some students need an extra year of high school to complete graduation requirements. The district’s fiveyear cohort graduation rate is 88.4 percent. The five-year cohort graduation rate reflects the number of students who entered the ninth grade in 2016-2017 and graduated by May 2021. Student proficiency Gaston’s overall proficiency rate for 2020-2021 is comparable with how well students across North Carolina performed on state tests. Gaston’s proficiency is 44.1 percent, which is just slightly below the state’s overall rate of 45.4 percent (a difference of only 1.3). Gaston recorded its highest proficiency levels in fifth

grade science, eighth grade science, and English II. The schools with the highest proficiency rate include Belmont Central, W.A. Bess, and Hawks Nest (elementary schools); Belmont, Cramerton, and Stanley (middle schools); and Gaston Early College, Highland, and South Point (high schools). Proficiency is based on the number of students scoring a Level III, IV, or V on the state tests. Based on overall proficiency for the state, Gaston County exceeded the state totals in six areas: sixth grade math, seventh grade math, eighth grade math, Math I, Math III, and Biology. Gaston had the same rate as the state in eighth grade science. “The test results provide a benchmark for our schools by letting us know where our students are academically and what we need to do to get our students on track for success in the 2021-2022 year,” added Dr. Booker. “Our schools plan to use the test data to guide academics and develop instructional plans that are in the best interest of students. Our priority is to meet the educational needs of all students, and we are confident that our teachers are up to the challenge of building on what students were able to learn last year and helping them grow and thrive academically in the year ahead.” (Editor’s note: It was noted by the writer of this article that the test scores released by the State Board of Education are preliminary results. The results must be verified by the state, and official results will be a part of the district and school report cards, which will be issued this fall.)

Fear of the Future (Part 3 of the “Combating Fear Series”) Have you ever tossed and turned all night? You just couldn’t rest because you were fearful about what the next day would bring. You were concerned about your future - anticipating bad things to happen. Maybe you are dealing with that right now. I want DANYALE PATTERSON to comfort you with the words of Jesus in Luke 12:24 (NLT). “Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any bird.” In addition, Jesus admonishes us to not worry about the problems of “tomorrow” which are out of our control. Sometimes we miss the blessing of the here and now by dwelling on what might happen. He states in Matthew 6:34 (MSG), “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Tips to Overcome Fear of the Future: •Pray to God about your concerns. Release it from your heart and give it to him. He created the entire world without our help, and he can surely solve our pressing problems. Meditate on Philippians 4:6 (NKJV). “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” • If your thoughts become anxious, recite Isaiah 12:2 (NLT) throughout the day. “See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The LORD God is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. • Be confident that God is a good God who greatly loves you. Think about Psalm 27:13 (NKJV). “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” • Expect good things to happen. Ponder on Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV). “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: Father, I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. I am in awe of your goodness. Your mercies are all over your works. I don’t know what the future may bring, but I am so glad that you hold the future. I am confident that all things will work together for my good. Lord, when I have anxious thoughts or fear, please remind me of your faithfulness. I trust you with my whole heart. Please forgive me for trying to figure out things on my own. I long to listen to your voice. I ask you to keep me on the right path. Still, the enemy aims to divide humanity for “…we wrestle not against flesh and blood…” He does this to keep God’s creation from coming to the full knowledge of the good news that Jesus – saves – sinners! We can clearly see the enemy’s plan at work in places like Afghanistan and India, but his claws are clasping American cities just like Cherryville. Dear friend, the epidemic of tribalism or cliques is one far graver than COVID. Hatred, partiality, and favoritism are variants, but this epidemic

can all be boiled down to its true source: sin. The more mankind casts one another down, encourages elitism, and allows feudalism in our homes the longer it will take for humanity to find the true antidote to the depravity that besets us. Dear friend, the human race is one! Our ethnicities make us a stronger humanity, a stronger church, and a stronger America. God wants you to love His creation by loving your neighbor! Will you go forth and treat your neighbor as a sacred creation made in the image of God?

Ironmen gridiron squads lose two games to Trojans New 1A/2A conference foes; new challenges for CHS teams by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The CHS Ironmen gridiron teams – varsity and JV – both lost games to new conference foes Chase last week. On Thursday, Sept. 9, the JV Ironmen took on the visiting Chase Trojans JV squad at Rudisill, losing the matchup 44-6 to the young Trojans team. Chase got their first TD of the first half with 7:30 on the clock, but their PAT for 2 points was no good, and it was 6-0, just like that. Their second TD of the first half came with 1:20 on the clock and they made the two-point conversion, making it 14-0 Chase. The JV Trojans picked up two more TDs and another two-point PAT to end the half 28-0 over the struggling, but undaunted JV Ironmen. The bright spots for CHS in this first half came from great effort on the part all of the team certainly, but sophomore quarterback Josh Ward and freshmen Rayshawn Sewell, Liam McIntyre, and Bryson Sigmon combined to put up some good yardage and give the Chase team a bit of pause. Ward had a good return of 25 yards in the second quarter and he appeared to be unafraid to put the ball up for

his receivers. Freshman Andron Patterson had a good return of 17 yards in the second quarter as well. In third quarter action, it was more of the same – Chase scoring and getting extra points with their two-point PATs. Ironmen punter, sophomore Justin Houser was kept busy and got off some good punts, putting the ball deep into Chase territory on more than one occasion. Ironmen tight end Patterson returned a kickoff for 20 yards, and Ward completed an 11-yard pass to #20, Sigmon. This was followed by a 15-yard, 4-yard, and 10yard dashes, respectively by McIntyre, who seemed to keep moving forward in spite of a whole host of Trojans hanging off of him, trying to stop him. The Ironmen’s only score came with 5:02 on the clock in the fourth quarter as Ward hit Sigmon in the end zone for a TD. The two-point PAT was no good, and the final for the night was Chase, 44; CHS, 6. Though the JV Ironmen defensive line had their hands full, they played hard and, for the most part, stopped as many Trojan runs as possible. Their O-line counterparts kept the Trojans off QB Ward and created enough holes for the ball carriers to gain yardage. The varsity Ironmen traveled to play Chase on Friday, Sept. 10, and fared only a little better than the JVs in scor-

ing against the Trojans. Chase took this matchup 42-16. The Ironmen’s two TDs came in the second quarter and in the fourth quarter. In the first TD, quarterback Chase Miller flipped the ball to Cooper Sloan, who then threw a pass to Landon Hahn for the score. Miller then hit Jackson Owens who ran the ball in for a two-point conversion. The Ironmen’s second TD of the game came off a three-yard TD scamper by QB Chase Miller. Cooper Sloan then ran the ball in for another two-point conversion, making the score 42-16, Chase’s favor. Miller carried the ball 13 times for a total of 25 yards on the ground; Sloan carried the ball 20 times for a total of 116 yards; and Gavin Cease carried the ball four times for 14 yards. Miller completed 15 passes for a total of 42 yards, and Sloan had a 27-yard TD pass to Hahn, which was one of three passes he caught for a total of 62 yards. Owens caught two passes totaling eight yards. The Ironmen had 15 first downs in the game and both the Ironmen defenses and offenses played hard and made good plays on the field. The varsity men are up next against new conference members the Shelby Golden Lions, Friday, Sept. 17, at Shelby.

Head Lady Wolverines softball coach Lance Beam said the Chavis softball team defeated W.C. Friday Middle School 21-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with pitcher Raylei Gidney getting the win and pitching a no hitter. She struck out three (3) batters. Said Beam, “The offense was led by Maddie Avery and Jenna Anthony who had two hits each.” Additionally, Beam noted Kennedy Weathers, Gidney, and Kate Bookout also contributed with a hit apiece. “The Lady Wolverines offense got multiple runs from Kate Mulvey, Landry Beam, Addison Davis and Abi Ca-

nipe,” he added. In action on Thursday, Sept. 2, Coach Beam said the softball ladies defeated Holbrook 12-0 in four innings. “Raylei (Gidney) got the win, pitching a no hitter and striking out 10 batters,” noted Beam, adding, “Our offense was led by Landry Beam and Addison Davis who had two hits each and scored multiple runs.” Beam said the Lady Wolverines offense also got hits and runs from Kate Mulvey, Kennedy Weathers, Kate Bookout, Maddie Avery and Abi Canipe. The team is currently 3-0. They had a “bye” on Monday, Sept. 9, but played Belmont at home, then will travel to Stanley on Thursday, Sept. 16.

Coach Leigh Kiser said Thursday, Sept. 2, saw her CHS Lady Ironmen take on visiting Burns in a new conference matchup with the ladies getting behind 2-0 before their “…offense got going.” Said Kiser, “We forced a fifth set and won the match in dramatic fashion,” with scores in the match 25-23 (BHS), 25-19 (BHS), 26-24 (CHS), 25-13 (CHS), and 16-14 (CHS). Coach Kiser said her team never gave up in the back and forth matchup. She noted there were “many outstanding players” in this one; Rileigh Kiser (38 assists and 21 digs) and senior, Addie Eaker, who had her best game of the season with 16 kills. “The defense was led by Taylor Digh with 16 digs, Skye Reed with 12 digs, and Kaitlyn Newsome with 11 digs. Terayha Bess had four aces and nine kills too,” said Kiser. In JV action, Coach Kiser noted they “…lost a heartbreaker 2-1,” by scores of 25-16 (BHS), 25-22 (CHS), and 15-11 (BHS), with players Lexi McSwain with four aces and Briley Wright with five digs being her stat leaders. The record stood then as follows: varsity at 4-5 overall; 2-1 in the conference, and the JVs at 1-8, overall; 0-3, in conference play. Kiser noted the Lady Ironmen varsity VB squad split a pair of games this past week, winning at Hunter Huss and losing to conference leader Highland Tech. However, for starters and according to Coach Kiser, the game scheduled for last Tuesday (Sept. 7) at Bessemer City has been

rescheduled for later in the season. In a non-conference matchup at Hunter Huss last Wednesday (Sept. 8) the ladies came away with a quick 3-0 victory, she said, with scores being 2510, 25-9, and 25-11. Said Kiser, “We dressed 14 players for the match and were able to get each one some valuable playing time.” Leaders for the CHS spikers were Rileigh Kiser, with four aces, 17 assists, and eight digs; and Taylor Digh had five serve aces. Terayha Bess had seven kills and Skye Reed and Katie Eaker chipped in with four kills each. Coach Kiser noted that 1A/2A SP conference leader Highland Tech came to Cherryville on Thursday, Sept. 9, and showed why they are leading the conference as they cruised their way to a 3-0 win over the host Lady Ironmen. Kiser said, “Highland had great servers, solid defense, and a lot of hitting in the loss.” Krista Davis, with four digs and Rileigh Kiser with 12 digs, led the defense and Terayha Bess had five kills in the loss. The JV Lady Ironmen only played once this week and fell to Highland 2-0 by scores of 25-16 and 25-19. “Briley Wright led the way with 10 digs for the JV ladies,” said Coach Kiser. Next week the ironmen travel to East Gaston and then host Forestview before heading to West Lincoln for a midseason tournament where they will play in three matches. Ironmen track coaches Justin Willyoung and Houston Gilmore handed out 2020-2021 track awards recently and also recognized two NC state qualifiers. Head coach Willyoung said of state qualifier Anthony Roberts, “(He is an) …extremely well-rounded athlete, (and) is capable of stepping into any running or jumping event and making an impact. This year he was a jumps specialist, competing in all three jumps every meet as well as relays for his fourth event. He had many first-place finishes throughout the season and qualified for regionals in four events: High, Long, Triple, and 4x200 meter relay. He competed very well at regionals and earned a third-place finish in the triple jump which earned him a spot in the state meet where he went on to place 8th. We look forward to seeing what Anthony can accomplish in this upcoming season. Jackson Owens (Boys Track MVP, state qualifier), noted Willyoung, “(Is) …a fierce and intense competitor and natural leader, and is a sprints specialist. There is NEVER any question that Jackson leaves everything he has on the track during each and every race. He is capable of reaching a gear that most people never find because they can’t push through the pain associated with getting there. Jackson has been our unquestioned leader since his freshman year, always pushing his teammates to be better.” He noted Owens is “… extremely coachable and the ultimate team player, Jackson will do whatever is needed of him to benefit the team no questions asked even if he knows it means sacrificing his full potential in an individual event.” He continued, “Jackson was a habitual contender in all of his events in the absolute hardest 1A conference and region in the state. In most other regions he would have been a regional champ easily. He qualified for 200m, 400, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, and 4x400 relay and placed third at

Captain Chris Cash said the cost of the vehicle was $598,907, and the amount was approved by the City in last year’s budget. Throughout a series of meetings and exhibits attended in order to gain more knowledge about what they needed in a new fire vehicle it was eventually decided that the one design that caught everyone’s attention was a design by long-time fire equipment manufacturer Pierce Manufacturing; in particular the beautiful Pierce Enforcer. Said Heffner, “The primary focus of the committee was to find which manufacturers provide the safest apparatus for our firefighters.” He also noted the committee also found out at during a trip to the Concord, NC, fire

department, that they were in the process of purchasing new apparatus from Pierce, and that CFD was allowed to “piggyback” onto their order, thereby saving time and “a great amount of money” with CFD’s order. Heffner noted that with the help of Mr. Frank Suggs, of Atlantic Emergency Solutions, an authorized dealer for Pierce, who flew the CFD committee folks up to Appleton, Wis., for a couple of planning sessions and a final inspection and punch list session, all was ready for the unit to be delivered. That delivery, said Heffner, came on Aug. 24, 2021 when the bright red vehicle arrived at its new home at Cherryville’s station house, ready to be tricked out with equipment. That job was done, Heffner was proud to point out by CFD’s own crew. Heffner, reading from hi notes, said, “This piece of equipment will offer exceptional value to our firefighters, community, and citizens. Our firefighters now have an apparatus that is dependable with up-to-date safety features which have been enhanced since our last pumper was ordered 21 years ago. Our community and citizens
