The 21st annual Cherryville Fire Department September 11th Remembrance Ceremony will be held Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 at 9 a.m. at the venerable Starnes Auditorium, said Fire Chief Jason Wofford. And, like all the past events, Chief Wofford and Assistant Chief Colby Heffner both noted it is an occasion to remind all in Cherryville to reflect on the price paid by the brave men and women who served on that fateful day, many of them paying the ultimate price for their service to their fellow man. The City of Cherryville and the Cherryville Fire Department are proud to have the event in memory of the 2,977 innocent civilians; 343 NYFD firefighters; 27 NYPD officers; and 37 New York Port Authority officers who were murdered at the hands of a small group of radical religious fanatics. New test results show that public school students in North Carolina are improving learning outcomes since returning to in-classroom instruction, but progress is still needed to reach pre-pandemic levels of achievement.Released by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction on Sept. 1, the new results are the first since the 2018-2019 school year to feature all the components of the state’s accountability framework. They provide an important picture of where student achievement stands after the closure of classrooms and switch to virtual learning during the pandemic.“Last year’s accountability results are really a testament to the resilience, dedication and commitment of thousands of educators across the state,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt in a statement. “They know, as I do, that we still have a steep hill to climb and that every step matters.”

reading proficiency for level 4, which dropped 6.6 percent from the previous school year. As for the graduation rate, that remained stabled at 86.2 percent, a slight decline from 87 percent in 2020-2021 but mostly unchanged from 86.5 percent in 2018-2019.AverageACT standardized test scores for 11th graders also remained stable from pre-pandemic numbers. University of North Carolina campuses now require a minimum ACT score of 19 to be admitted, compared to the previous minimum score of 17. The percentage achieving the new minimum score was 41.7 percent compared to 55.2 percent in 2020-2021. But if the benchmark had remained the same, 54.6 percent students would have earned the required score. The state’s calculation of A-F school performance grades and growth designations also returned this year after being suspended during the pandemic. The number of low-performing schools – those that received a D or F grade – increased significantly from the 2018-2019 school year, from 488 schools to 864 schools. The number of low-performing districts also jumped from eight to 29.The A-F grading system is heavily dependent on test scores – to the tune of 80 percent depending on those scores – with the remaining 20 percent based on growth scale measured across several years.

Powerball is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. The other games are Mega Millions, Lucky For Life, and Carolina Cash 5. Ticket sales from draw games like Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise $2.5 million a day on average for education. For details on how $14.7 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Gaston County in 2021, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Lucky birthday numbers win Gaston County man $100,000 Powerball prize

Dennis Francis of Gastonia used the numbers from his birthday to play Powerball and they won him a $100,000 prize.“I was like, “Wow, this is wonderful,’” Francis said. Francis, 62, said the winning numbers came directly from his birth date. After he realized he won, he roused his wife to tell her the good news. “I said “Wake up, I just won $100,000,” Francis said. “She said, ‘You’re lying,’ so I showed her the numbers and she woke straight up.” Francis bought the $3 Power Play ticket using Online Play on the lottery’s website. It matched numbers on four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000 in the Aug. 20 drawing. The prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X Power Play multiplier hit.“It’s nice now to have some extra dollars in case of emergency,” Francis said. Francis claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $71,049. He said he would use the money to pay off his car and save the rest as emergencyMonday’sfunds. Powerball drawing offers a $124 million jackpot, or $69.7 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

REUNION From Page 1 reunion lunch, after taking over the reins from Sandy and Joe Dismukes, who were over it for many years. Things are set to kick off, she said, that morning as, preceding the luncheon, a welcome reception will be held at the C. Grier Beam Truck Museum from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with coffee and light refreshment provided. She continued, “A meal will then be served around lunch time at the church’s COC, the cost of which is $16 per person.” Mrs. Bumgarner said, “All former employees of Carolina Freight, as well as their spouses, guests and any family members are invited to attend. We would love to see all of you there.” She also noted this will the first time since the pandemic shut things down so suddenly back in 2020 and kept everyone “bottled up”, sheltering in place, all through that year and the following year, 2021.

officially in the books!

This summer your Cherryville Branch Library had almost 150 children from birth through rising fifth graders participate, with over 30 readers completing their records. We had over 20 teens register with 16 of them finishing – an amazing number for that demographic. Overall, our youth read over 26,000 minutes this summer! Our little branch held 35 events for children and teens with almost 800 attending. It was quite a summer! And while we’re very pleased with the results, we’re always looking for ways to make things even better next year. We are trying something new this year for “Talk Like a Pirate Day”, which is (wait for it!) … an interactive movie. Have you heard of these?

In a move that Biden had promised during his campaign, he erased between $10,000 to $20,000 of debt from millions of Americans college spending spree extravaganza. Years ago, Americans started learning to spend money like it was water. Maybe they thought, “I won’t have to pay it back.” Their dream has come true. You and I along with the rest of America’s tax payers will get to pay at least a half trillion dollars of this debt. This is just what you had been hoping for! More taxes! Oh wait, just those rich people in America will have to pay this off, right? Wrong! Every American, on some level, will share in this new financial burden.Universities are legally raping America’s families because we sign up and agree to pay the tuition. We do it to ourselves. Universities don’t put a gun to the heads of Americans and make us pay. Americans foolishly agree to this debt. Yet, most universities are the last sector in America to feel the pain of the economy. In 20202021, most of them received millions of free government paycheck protection program money. This is more government money (read “debt”) that will be eaten by you – the taxpayer. Millions of American businesses also received tens of thousands to millions of dollars of free PPP money in the last two years that will also slam all Americans in moreSometaxes.tenured professors are making over $200,000 a year. Many university presidents across the country are making over $1,000,000 a year, plus major perks. Many university coaches make a million or more a year. Universities spend money like it is water. They are the ones who need to be lending and collecting or forgiving some of this debt, notYouyou.probably already paid once. Now we get to pay more for the students and the universities who just kept spending money. Why are you to be held responsible for the foolish people who borrow $50,000 to $100,000 and more? I believe in helping people, but Biden needs to pass some of this lending and collecting burden to the universities. You, the taxpayer, keep giving the money. The universities want $30,000 to $50,000 a year and more. American families foolishly swallow the poison. Next, their financial insanity becomes everybody’s problem. Does this seem right to you? Sadly, millions of Americans rack up college debt and never complete their degrees. Millions more get degrees they never use. You don’t need a college degree for a lot of jobs. Most jobs do require training that can be accomplished in far less time and Congratulationsmoney. if your debt is $10,000 to $20,000 lighter, but your debt will still have to be paid, by your friends, family, neighbors, and others.Consider spending the first two years in a community college or trade school. You can move on to the big-name school for your junior and senior years. The first two years are generally electives and classes you don’t enjoy that much anyway. You’ll save a lot of money and maybe grow up some before you land in a dorm room 200 miles away from home.

Dear reader, humor me and let me tell you what Joe B’s debt cancellation attempt IS going to make a dent in… every tax-paying American’s pocketbook! Now, in the future, and quite possibly for many, many decades upon decades after that. That means me. It means you. It will literally be the gift that keeps on giving, as all government spending programs always are. It means… well, you get the picture... To paraphrase the late, great actor, Heath Ledger (who played the Joker in one of the many Batman movies), “Michael, why so serious?”

OPINION

TODAY’S QUOTE:

There is still plenty of time (at least two more years) to wreck the economy and beggar us common plebes. And, if the usual (and not-so-useful) suspects who elected him to the presidency the first time out manage to get him (or someone of the same political persuasion) placed in the Oval Office in 2024, then, I guess the sky’s the limit and it will be, ‘Socialism for All’! But I digress. I mean, shucks! I think that when all those college soonto-be grads and just-grads see how little is being given them with this program, there is likely to be another spate of disgruntled young folks walking the streets in America’s big cities, yelling and chanting for change. I can just hear them“Wenow…want free college We don’t want to have to pay for it – ever! We want high paying jobs and we don’t want to have to get educated and graduate to get them. Just give them to us. We deserve them! Why? ‘Cause we’re yer future!”Thinks that scenario is absurd or stupidly funny? Just wait. All of us who paid for our college educations the old-fashioned way may yet have the last laugh.

PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, I praise you because you execute justice for the oppressed; you give food to the hungry. And you set those who are in bondage free. I thank you for putting spiritual hunger in my heart. In fact, you said that it is a blessing to hunger and thirst after righteousness for we will be filled. I ask you Lord to feed my spirit and soul with yourself. Help me to seek you in everything that I say and do. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.”

The Old Testament speaks of it in two Hebrew words and the New Testament translates three Greek words for the English “Hell”. Jesus spoke of it often. His message about hell and all the other Biblical references to it seek to describe for humans the most awful punishment human language can describe to warn unbelievers before it is too late. Taken literally, hell is a place of eternal fire or eternal darkness. Fire or dark, there is one thing for sure; no one wants to suffer the punishment of hell.Inthis writing, I want to share the story of a man who got a second, God-given chance to avoid eternal hell. His went by a nickname, “Bud.” He was an older man when this event took place and he had lived by his wits throughout his life, for you see, he was illiterate. Couldn’t read; couldn’t write. And had a distrust of people. His story goes like this… Bud’s wife called me, explaining that he wanted to talk to a preacher. She had visited the church I pastored and told me that he had suffered a stroke back in February. No one gave him any hope of making it. He was the CCU for over two weeks and half of that time he was in an unconscious state. But he recovered and was transferred to a step-down unit for a week or so and then to a room and then was discharged to go home. And once at home, he wanted to talk with a preacher. I went to Bud’s house that very afternoon. He was in the guest bedroom. He greeted me with a, “Come in, preacher and have a seat. I need to talk with“Well, you!” Bud, what’s on hour“Theymind?”tell me I was out of it for over a week in the hospital. But I wasn’t really there. I was at a huge trash dump. Started out on top of it. Whew, it stunk. Old papers and plastic bags, rotten table scraps; like you would see at a trash pile. So, I started walking down it. That’s when I noticed rusted car fenders, burning tires, old batteries, and stuff like that. I kept on walking and added to all of that was bloody animal hides, cow heads, chickens’ feathers and feet, dried out fish, hog innards. Then I came upon a rusty barbed wire fence. I crossed it. A thick fog was all around, and I couldn’t see anything for more than just a few feet. I felt lost. I had no sense of direction. I was walking in circles. All of sudden I saw a man coming toward me, so I shouted out, ‘Who are you? Where am I?’ and he walked right on past me looking straight ahead like he didn’t seem me or hear me. After a while another person came walking out of the fog. This time it was a woman, and I ran over to her and called out but she walked right on by me like I wasn’t there. This happened over and over and over. No one would stop. No one spoke. They all walked right past me like I wasn’t there. I wanted to know where I was.” “Did you ever find out where you were, Bud?”

A Hungry Man David understood this hunger and thirst. He desired God so much that prompted God “to call him a man after his heart,” not because he was a perfect man, but because he was a hungry man. David states in Psalm 63:1-5 (NLT), “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.”

Hunger and Thirst DANYALE PATTERSON

When people get hungry, especially extremely hungry, there is a desperation that is not satisfied until they eat. In fact, some experience nausea or sickness if they miss breakfast, lunch or dinner. Also, when a person is thirsty nothing seems to satisfy them like a drink of water. In the same way, natural things can be a pattern of spiritual or heavenly things according to Hebrews 8:5. I believe just as physical bodies get hungry and need to be filled, our spirits also need to be fed. There is a void in us that only God can fill, because he put it there. astes 3:11b (NLT) states, …. “He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” In other words, all humans can sense that there is something greater than what meets the eye. There is a supernatural realm that we long for, a realm of total peace, love, and power that is not limited by our surroundings.

“They all said I was unconscious in the hospital, but preacher, I was in hell!” As I had listened to Bud’s story it dawned on me that he was giving an apt description of the Valley of Hinnom or Gehenna, the words that Jesus used in describing hell. The Valley of Hinnom, near the outskirts of Jerusalem, had become a trash dump and a place of abomination where fire burned continuously. Gehenna became synonymous with “a place of burning”. “My question is, for you, preacher, is why did He let me come“Thereback?”is a way to avoid that place”, I said. “God’s grace is open to all and is the way to avoid hell and His blessings of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Do you believe that and do you claim Him as your Lord and Savior?”Bud answered in the affirmative and then asked me what God would want him to do. “Tell your story to all who will listen. That’s what you must do and leave the rest to the Lord. He will make sure your purpose is complete. We all experience the call to God’s grace in a lot of different ways. For Bud, he got to experience hell firsthand. He realized God had given him another chance. Folks, hell is a real place. Read what it was like again through the eyes of an illiterate, distrusting man. My prayer for you, if you don’t know Jesus already as your Savior and Lord, is that Bud’s story will be a means of God’s grace for you. And for those that do love the Lord already, that your faith would be made ever stronger and your walk with Him ever closer.God bless you all.

Come Eat and Drink Jesus proclaims throughout scripture that he is the one that can feed the hungry and thirsty soul. John 6:3335 (NKJV) states, “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” Jesus can provide what no one else can. Once a person receives him into their hearts and then starts growing in a personal relationship with him, they will experience a love and purpose that only he can give.

The current record for the varsity is 6-2 (overall); 1-2 (in SPC 1A play). (Additional stats and info by Brian Kiser)
