City Council meeting update Centralina will help Cherryville as Chapter 160D statute had become cumbersome over time by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
Monday night’s, Dec. 14, City Council meeting saw a couple of long-time City employees receive recognition, a Zoom presentation by Centralina Council of Government’s Michelle Nance, and more information on the city’s bond results and a timeline, among other items. In the Zoom meeting with Ms. Nance, she spoke
about the updates to Chapter 160D which, according to Nance (and the UNC School of Government’s web site), “…places these statutes into a more logical, coherent organization. “While the new law does not make major policy changes or shifts in the scope of authority granted to local governments,” continued the web site info, “it does provide many clarifying amendments and consensus reforms that will need to be incorporated into local development regulations.” Nance said the Chapter 160D is effective now but told Council that cities and local governments have until July 2021 to conform See CITY COUNCIL, Page 2

Large menorah built outside Latino church They wanted to honor the very celebration Jesus Himself celebrated in Jerusalem by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
The congregation and ministers have chosen to remember the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which ended Dec.
18, in their own very special way. And what better way to do that than to build a very large, almost first-century-sized example outside their small church off Delview Road. Pastors Roberto and Pily Alfaro and their sons worked on it, and by oldest son, Camilo’s own admission, this isn’t the first time, nor the second (or third, or fourth, or, well, you get the picture) time the devout, Bible-believing family has done this. Said Camilo recently, See MENORAH, Page 8
This year’s Cherryville Fire Department Christmas Banquet and Awards ceremony looked quite a bit different from past years, noted Chief Jeff Cash. “Unfortunately, this year’s Cherryville Fire Department Annual Christmas Banquet and Awards Ceremony was held this past Saturday (Dec. 12) at the fire station due to the COVID virus,” he said. Chief Cash said the ceremony was held virtually but for those who wish to view it, it can be found on their Facebook site. A total of 10 awards, service pins, and scholarships were handed out that afternoon, which was also the same day the CFD staff gave away more of the face masks they had received back in August. Chief Cash said, “We honored some of our finest folks and awarded two scholarships.” He noted that special thanks go out to their various sponsors, adding, “It is

Hospices merge Hospice Cleveland County and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region announced today they have joined forces to form a single organization with even greater capacity to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for patients across 23 counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. Under an agreement signed by the organizations, Hospice Cleveland County will operate as a separate but affiliated subsidiary with the same name, staff and high-quality care it is known for, and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region will continue its growth as the state’s largest nonprofit hospice provider. The merger also calls for creation of an independent philanthropic foundation in Cleveland County that will support local nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and governmental agencies. “This is great news for Cleveland County and the Charlotte region as we combine two community-based, nonprofit hospice providers committed to delivering the best possible care for patients – regardless of their ability to pay or the complexity of their illnesses,” said Myra McGinnis, who will continue as president of Hospice Cleveland County. “Unlike the for-profit providers that are increasingly entering this region, our organizations have been here for decades, so we know our communities, our patients and our healthcare providers – and we put their interests first.” Peter Brunnick, president and CEO of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, will lead the combined organization, serving a daily census of approximately 2,600 patients in the Carolinas. No immediate changes are planned as both organizations will continue to provide the same services and staffing across the combined
service area. “We are gaining a highly regarded partner in Hospice Cleveland County and continuing to broaden our presence across the Piedmont,” said Brunnick, who grew up in Shelby after his family relocated here in 1958. “This merger not only will mean increased leverage and buying power, but more importantly, our increasing size and community connections will give us tremendous flexibility in responding to our patients’ needs.” With constant evolution in healthcare policy, reimbursement and delivery, Brunnick said the combined resources of the two hospice providers will help the organization stay ahead of change, remain competitive and enhance the quality of care. The two organizations have collaborated frequently over the years, and both achieve superior rankings on the federal government’s Hospice Compare quality measures of hospice providers nationally. Over 35 years, Hospice Cleveland County has served thousands of patients and their families in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties, and now operates two hospice houses. Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region is the state’s first hospice, founded 42 years ago, and provides a range of services in the Carolinas, including four hospice houses. Hospice delivers care and support for patients with terminal illnesses, with a focus on relieving patients' pain and other symptoms, attending to their emotional and spiritual needs, and providing support for their families and caregivers. CITY COUNCIL From Page 1 their ordinances to this law. She noted Centralina will help Cherryville do this as the statute had become cumbersome over time and changes had to be made. Another facet of the statute that needed to looked at and changes made had to do with land use plans, specifically that every community in the state has to have a land use plan for zoning by July 2022. Nance said the timetable for comments on the changes will be February to march 2021 with the adjustment process in April and May 2021, and everything wrapping up by June 2021. Mayor H.L. Beam, III then moved onto the special recognitions section of the meeting. He first recognized City Attorney Palmer Huffstetler, Jr., for his 30 years of service to the City. Mr. Huffstetler received his certificate from the Mayor. Later, when asked, he said of the honor, “I am very thankful for the opportunity to have served the City of Cherryville for 30 years as City Attorney. “I was 28 years old when I was appointed, and the City and I have developed together over the past three decades. I look forward to continuing to work closely with our excellent City Council and staff in the coming years.” The Council next recognized City Clerk Paige H.
Green for her receiving the 2020 Municipal Clerks Honor Roll award. The award is hosted by General Code and, in the award, it is noted Mrs. Green has earned a place on the Honor Roll, and in addition to the pin also given her, received a certificate which states, “In appreciation of outstanding and dedicated service as City Clerk of the City of Cherryville,” the certificate of recognition was awarded to her. Mrs. Green said, “I feel it is an honor to be Cherryville’s City Clerk and on the Clerks Honor Roll. I have had the privilege of working with our citizens for almost 26 years and making a difference for them. Not many people can say that they love what they do, but I am blessed beyond words.” Of the two long-time employees, City Manager Cash said, “Both of these individuals do great work for the City of Cherryville and have for many years! They are both truly an asset to the City and to the community. They are great members of our leadership team. Both are very professional employees! Always willing to serve!” The Council heard the list of 2021 Council appointees read by Mayor Beam, and the approved all of them, with no changes, deletions or additions being made. Also, Council members voted on and approved a resolution certifying the bond results that were on the Nov. 3, ballot and voted on and
approved a resolution on the bonds timeline as projected by City Manager Jeff Cash. Mr. Cash noted the bond information was put together by City staff, along with the firm, McGill and Associates, with the City will work once things get underway some time in the summer of 2021. “This is a tentative timeline and appears to be the roadmap by which we hope to start work around the first of June 2021. We should get the actual plans by the third week of January 2021,” said Mr. Cash. Council heard from City Clerk Paige Green about proposed fees for the Cherryville Memorial Cemetery, which will become effective Jan, 1, 2021. While most fee increases will be minimal; no more than $5 or $10 for grave openings and closings and such, Mrs. Green noted the biggest increase comes with funerals scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. The additional charge for such, she noted, increased from $350 to $500, an increase of $150. The Council voted on and approved the rate increases. In other news, Police Chief Cam Jenks told Council that he and some of his officers helped out their Mt. Holly counterparts during the recent loss of Patrolman Tyler Herndon, the Kings Mountain officer killed last week in the line of duty. They also helped out at the funeral as well, he said.

Grover couple and family, craft unique wood art pieces by hand For past two decades, Overmountain Woodworks artisans turn ideas into beautiful creations by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info If you’re looking for that truly unique piece of Americana as your next Christmas gift, or just a gift in general, then look no further than the Greene’s in Grover, NC. Chuck and Brandy A. Greene, co-owners and operators of Overmountain Woodworks and Milling, along with daughters Erika and Erin, turn out some pretty impressive art with American, patriotic, and holiday themes. They are well known in the area for their American flags pieces that seem to wave as if blowing in a steady wind. Said Chuck, “We started making small wood
projects and crafts approximately 20 years ago as gifts for friends and family.” Brandy added, “From there, other people would see the projects we made, and ask us if we could make some for them.” The Greene’s both grew up and attended school in Kings Mountain, they said, then bought a house in Grover when they got married. They have two daughters, Erika, 23, and Erin, 16, noted Brandy, who both enjoy working in the shop with their parents. When asked where they get their inspiration, Brandy laughingly replied, “Our main inspiration is You Tube. I love You Tube!” Chuck added, “Nature, for one thing. And, Doug Linker on You Tube. Also, (woodworker) Kyle Hall on You Tube, and Eric Caron, also on You Tube. These all offer great tutorials.” The Greene’s said they are currently finishing up chainsaw-carved
Christmas trees and custom flags before Christmas. “After Christmas, we plan to start another fullsize (adult-size) rocking horse,” said Chuck. Brandy added they are looking at new projects they can complete next year. How they do what they do is essentially a secret they won’t divulge, but there is a lot of hard work and time involved, they said. That said, Brandy said for those wanting one or more of their artworks, “You can reach us at Overmountain Woodworks and Milling. We are listed on Facebook as Chuck Greene and Brandy Allred Greene, individually.” Or you may call them on Chuck’s cell phone, which is (704) 473-3873, though you may have to leave a message; or call Brandy’s cell at (704) 284-8289. “We will try our best to get back with you as soon as possible,” she said.

Brandy Greene also works in the shop as well. Here she is grinding details into one of the Christmas trees Chuck has carved with his chainsaw.
Youngest daughter, Erin, also helps her mom and dad out in the shop as well. Here, she paints a small “Don’t Tread on Me” flag for her parents.

County offers appointment-based services In an effort to protect both its employees and residents, Gaston County is implementing appointment-based services at its administration building. Those services started on Monday, Dec. 7. For those who need to make tax payments, the County continues to offer drive-through tax bill payments, for residents who wish to pay in person by cash or check, at 405 N. Chester St. in Gastonia. This eliminates the need for face-to-face contact, making this payment
method a safer and contact-less option for citizens and county employees alike. The drivethrough operates Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m., to 4:30 p.m. Non-cash payments may also be made by utilizing drop boxes at the tax office, located at the Gaston County Administration Office, 128 W. Main Ave., in Gastonia. The drop boxes are located on each side of the rear entrance doors of the building. The Gaston County Senior
Center is also operating on an appointment-only basis. The Gaston County library system will continue to operate with the current in-person hours combined with curbside service. The Gaston County Museum will continue to be open to guests, but will require masks for anyone who chooses to visit. Some county facilities will continue to require temperature checks and health questionnaires for employees and

The Best Gifts (4th and Final Part of “Christmas Carols Series”) During the Christmas season, we get terribly busy buying gifts for family and friends. Let us not forget that some of the best gifts in life - money cannot buy! The gifts of unconditional love, forgiveness, and quality time are invaluable. In fact, not only can we give these gifts to those we love, but many DANYALE PATTERSON people all around us are needing someone to share the love of Christ with them through good works. These types of gifts bring pleasure to our Heavenly Father, the King of the universe. Hebrews 13:16 states, “And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” The Christmas Carol “Little Drummer Boy’’ demonstrates this well. In the song, the little boy felt inadequate to give a valuable gift to the king, because he was poor. Then, he realized that he had the gift of music. He played his little drum and received a big smile of appreciation from the “new born king”. This gift came from his heart and his special talent which was more precious than any material gift he could have given. As you read the following lyrics, think of ways you can offer meaningful gifts that will touch someone’s life. Come they told me Pa rum pum pum pum A new born King to see Pa rum pum pum pum Our finest gifts we bring Pa rum pum pum pum To lay before the king Pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum So to honor Him Pa rum pum pum pum When we come Pum pum pum pum… Little baby Pa rum pum pum pum I am a poor boy too Pa rum pum pum pum I have no gift to bring Pa rum pum pum pum That’s fit to give our King Pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum Shall I play for you Pa rum pum pum pum Pa rum pum pum Pum pum pum pum Mary nodded Pa rum pum pum pum The ox and lamb kept time Pa rum pum pum pum I played my drum for him Pa rum pum pum pum I played my best for him Pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum Then he smiled at me Pa rum pum pum pum Me and my drum… PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Dear God, I praise you as the Ultimate Giver of all that is good. You did not spare your own Son, but gave him up for us all -- you graciously give many wonderful things. During this Christmas season, guide my steps and use me to be a blessing to my family, friends, and even strangers, so that I may bring glory to your name. Remind me to enjoy the little things in life because one day I`ll look back and realize they were the best gifts. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.” Danyale Patterson is co-founder of Enlighten Ministries, a 501c3 organization with her husband Brandon Patterson. He replied with Deuteronomy 6:29-30, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind, and all your strength,” and Leviticus 19:31, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Throughout the New Testament we discover the promises of Jesus to His followers which illustrate the call to relationships. In the Gospel of John He says, “In my Father’s house are many rooms…I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take

The promise of the greatest gift is even there as the angel spoke these words, “…and they shall call Him Immanuel – which means, ‘God with us’”. (Matthew 1:23) A very blessed Christmas season to all of you. May you live in the joy that regardless of how tough life may become at times, you are never alone. God is with you. God wants a relationship with each of us and invites us to be in God’s family.

MENORAH From Page 1 “Well, we have celebrated Hanukkah since 2002, ever since we moved to Cherryville. This year we wanted to follow what Jesus said and let our light shine! “So, we decided to build a Hanukkah and honor the celebration that Jesus Himself celebrated in Jerusalem back in the first century. “At Israel Casa Integral we try to focus deep on the roots that make our faith today, going back and understanding the real message that Adonai established for all of us.” “We believe in the God of the Bible, and we believe in his Messiah, Yeshua Ha’ Mashiach (or Jesus, our Messiah), born in Israel, that died for our sins and will come again to Israel!” said Pastor Roberto Alfaro. The original idea for this, said Camilo, came from his mother. “It was actually minister Pily Alfaro, who, after seeing what was going on with the pandemic, knew we were not going to be able to celebrate it as we have for the past 17 years. So, we wanted our light to shine outside and let people know that there is still hope and His name is Jesus, or, as He is known by His Hebrew name, Yeshua, which means, 'Salvation’.” Pastora Pily Alfaro said, “During this pandemic we try to get many people to remember that Jesus is our Hope and our Salvation. We hope this Biblical symbol helps the community remember that during these hard times.” Camilo admits the family had some trepidations about raising this iconic and primarily Hebrew symbol in Cherryville. “We were honestly just a little scared,” he said. “We didn’t know how the community would react to this symbol. A Hanukkah should be a symbol all Christians should

The last light had yet to be lit at the time the photo was made, due to the Hebrew religious observation of lighting a light for every day of the week of the official holiday. and other questions about the big gold menorah. Alfaro said, “It took some months of preparation and we are so thankful for the Rodriguez family because they are the ones who assembled the whole thing. It can be lit with a candle but we are also thinking about putting some light bulbs to be able to keep it on all night. “The size was just about making sure people were able to see it and also just to try to make it known that our light needs to shine bright and big wherever we go.” Alfaro continued, “It will end the evening of Friday, Dec. 18 (the end of traditional Hanukkah). We will then store it since it’s so big. But, we do
have one inside that is part our decoration inside our church and that was also made locally by one of our own church members. Inside of our church we have replications of the Altar, the Menorah, and the Ark of Offering.” As for having any comments on it, Alfaro said, “We haven’t ,but we invited everyone at the time to drive by Delview Road and look at it! “This is a symbol that is in our Christian faith and that helps us connect more of the word of Jesus in John 8:22, which says, 'I am the Light of the world.’ When we lift this Menorah up during Hanukkah we want to let people know that hope is available!”

The annual Gaston County Toy Run for Kids took place last Saturday. Hundreds upon hundreds of riders from Gaston, Cleveland, Lincoln, Mecklenburg and other areas took part and droves of kids got plenty of swell toys. The event kicked off at the Ranlo Church of God then moved to several other locations where the scene was repeated. Show is the sea of Toy Run for Kids motorcycles. (photos by Alan Hodge)
Little Steven Adams and his dad, Matthew made the Toy Run scene.

How Robotic Pets Can Help Isolated Seniors Avoid Loneliness Dear Savvy Senior, I recently read an article about robotic pets being a great substitute for pet-loving seniors who can’t have or take care of a pet any longer. What do you think of this? My mother, who has some dementia, is living in an assisted living facility that doesn’t allow pets. And because of COVID, we haven’t been allowed inside the facility to visit her since March. I’ve been thinking about getting her a robot pet to help cheer her up but would like to know if they are worth buying, and if so, where can I go to find one. Locked Out Daughter Dear Locked Out, There have actually been several studies on this topic that has shown that robotic pets – which are lifelike interactive pets – can have a positive impact on many lonely, socially isolated seniors, especially those who have dementia. This is particularly important now as the pandemic has caused millions of high-risk, vulnerable seniors to isolate as a means to protect themselves from the corona-
virus. Here’s what you should know. Robotic Pet Studies In 2018, the New York State Office for the Aging was the first state in the U.S. to test the robotic pets with isolated seniors and results showed that using pets to lower social isolation was highly successful, with 70 percent of pilot participants reporting a decrease in isolation after one year. Subsequent programs done in aging agencies in Alabama, Florida and Pennsylvania have also shown positive results Other clinical studies conducted by AARP, UnitedHealthcare, and other clinicians and have also found that robotic pets can help to enhance the well-being and quality of life of lonely or isolated individuals and those living with dementia and other forms of cognitive decline, by providing a level of interaction and comfort from a lifelike companion. Where to Look If you’re interested in getting your mom a robotic pet, a top option is

to play with and won’t weigh down even the most fragile frame.
They offer cats, a kitten and a pup that look, feel and sound like the real thing – minus the feeding, watering, litter box or backyard cleanup, and the vet bills. With prices ranging between $65 and $130, these soft, plush animals have built-in sensors, “vibrapurr” or “barkback” technology, and brushable fur, making them surprisingly realistic.
Some other robotic pet options you should look into include Tombot’s Jennie ($399; tombot.com), a lapdog that barks on command and has realistic facial features; AIBO ($2,900; us.aibo.com) by Sony, which is a plastic puppy that has lifelike expressions and a dynamic array of movements; and Paro the Seal ($6,120; parorobots.com), which is marketed as a “carebot,” designed specifically for people with dementia.
Insert four batteries, and the cats, which come in four different shades to mimic real breeds, can open and close their eyes, lift their paws, and move their head and body. If you pet them in the right spot – like on their belly or back side – they’ll let out a purr. If your mom is more of a dog person, you can also buy a stuffed golden puppy, accessorized with a red bandana, that will bark if he’s feeling happy, sad, or needy. At only four pounds, the stuffed pup is easy
