Making a difference in women’s lives by MICHAEL E. POWELL
CaroMont Health wants the community to know that, when it comes to breast cancer, its Gastonia clinic is there to help on all levels. And for the 200-plus women who have already received treatment, and the many who will be treated in the future, that center is literally a one-stop shop of health care and well-being. “Our Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic has been around for a little over a year,” Oncology Clinical Manager Robin Smith said. “We have the means at the clinic to provide a team-structured program of diagnoses, therapy plans – both medical and radiological – nutritional plans, and follow-up for each patient we see.” The MBCC is located at 2525 Court Drive, across from Gaston Memorial Hospital. Smith said when a patient comes into the MBCC, she is already on par to be an integral part of her own care plan, along with a stellar team of physicians and health care professionals. Smith believes it takes such an assem-
bly of medical talent to tackle breast cancer and the fear and stigma it can instill in a woman’s life.

“For many patients, when they come to us, it is right after their primary diagnosis. It’s important to get the best care from the best physicians and other personnel at that moment.” Thus the format (and the term “multidisciplinary”) of MBCC: many (health care professionals) treating one. Essentially, the format for MBCC is that, without leaving her community, the patient will benefit from a “personalized plan of treatment recommendations” from the team of doctors. Such a visit assures the patient receives a comprehensive evaluation, a discussion by the MD’s of their diagnostic and treatment options, a clinical trial eligibility assessment, screening for genetic counseling and/or testing, and an introduction to local and national support and

She never saw it coming. The deer –the swerve to avoid it – the thud and breaking glass as she hit the tree. She had released her seat belt since she was so close to home to allow herself to grab the mail from the box without getting out of the car. The impact sent her upwards into the roof of the car. Somehow her hands were still on the steering wheel when she came back down. And then, her hands fell from the wheel. She couldn’t move them from the position they fell to. Momentary confusion, then panic set in. She tried but couldn’t move either leg. How was she going to get out of the car? How was she going to call for help? She didn’t really remember anyone finding her. Since she was divorced and her children were grown and living in other states No one was waiting for her to arrive. Her first real memory was in the hospital emergency room. The grim look on the physician’s face confirmed her fears. She was paralyzed from the neck down. Her neck had been broken in the crash. The next few months had been a blur of hospital rehabilitation, and visits from her grown children and co-workers at the local University where she was a Department Head. Her University insurance had covered 80% of the acute care and rehab charges, but now she was deemed chronically impaired and her insurance benefits had ended. She was faced with decisions no one wants to think about. Permanent paralysis with minimal movement in her arms would confine her to a wheel chair and make self care almost impossible. She could not transfer, use the toilet, bath, dress, prepare food or even feed herself without assistance. She was too young for Medicare and even with disability payments she would not be able to pay a full time care giver and still meet her mortgage, car payment and other financial commitments. Her children offered to “take her in but they
lived out of state with their own families and jobs. They would not have the time to care for a quadriplegic mother. She remembered well the day three years ago she had sat with her insurance agent to review her financial situation. She was 50 years old and earning more money than she ever had. Her agent had advised her to save more for retirement and to apply for a Long Term Care Insurance Plan that would help protect her assets should she ever become chronically ill. She had laughed and said “Oh I’m too young to think about that. I have plenty of timeâ€?. Her agent had reminded her that the premiums increased with age and that once something happened it would be too late to purchase a plan. If only she had listened and taken a plan. She had even called her agent when the rehab. Team told her she was being discharged and asked if she could get a long term care insurance plan. Unfortunately, it was too late to apply. Now, as she sat with her accountant calculating sources of income - early retirement, disability, and eventually social security- she was faced with depleting all of her savings and investments within a few years to pay for full time care givers. She would have to sell her home and possibly move into a care facility –her worst nightmare. Her PhD and Department Head position were of no value as she faced a life of total dependency, loss of her home, and everything she had worked so hard for. She would not be able to leave anything to her children or grandchildren because it would take everything she had just to survive. If only she had planned‌ This story is based on an actual client with some editing to protect her privacy. Suzanne H. Amos, LTCP, Agent The Amos Agency, LLC
When you must be crowned... If part of your tooth is missing or broken off, and a “filling cannot be supported by the remaining tooth structure, a crown (or sometimes referred to as “cap) may be required. If your problem is a cracked tooth, the sooner it is treated and crowned, the more likely it will be saved. The crown is custom made to match the color and contours of your other teeth. Once the crown is cemented on, it is stationary and works as a protective cover. The crown will add extra strength to your tooth structure and will improve the appearance of your teeth.
When do you need a crown? 1. To strengthen a decayed, cracked or broken tooth 2. To protect a tooth that is “at risk for cracking. This measure helps to prevent problems such as pain and/or the need for a root canal. 3. To improve the appearance of a tooth 4. How I Conquered Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) I know what it’s like to have serious health issues. I know what it’s like to try everything you can think of and still end up feeling sick. But more importantly, I want to share how you can overcome these things, just like I did. My story begins in college. Every time I would have to write an exam, I found myself running to the bathroom. I took many exams in college and spent many hours in the bathroom. I didn’t think anything was wrong with my digestive system; I thought it was just nerves. But as time went on, I discovered that it was more than nerves, it was irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Many years of this condition took its toll on me. I developed a weakened immune system, which allowed fibromyalgia to take hold (I have since learned that fibromyalgia is just another manifestation of a poor immune system). During this time, I was in graduate school, teaching part time at a community college, and raising my two little girls. Life was full, but we were not healthy; in addition to my own ailments, one of my girls, Andrea, was battling rheumatoid arthritis. Though we lived in a cold climate, she couldn’t stand to have even a light, cotton sheet draped over her ankles at bedtime. A friend who had witnessed our sufferings invited me to a health seminar that highlighted how changing what you ate
could change your health. I learned about the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, how many of the pre-packaged foods that I was eating could actually be damaging my health and how important it was for me replace t h e s e “processed” foods with fresh vegetable juices and lots of raw fruits and vegetables. Based on what I learned, I also stopped eating meat and dairy products and focused my diet on only plant-based foods – fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc. I truly didn’t know if or how it would work in my life, but I knew there weren’t any more options for Andrea or me. We were both too young to be enduring so much. Adopting this new eating plan wasn’t the
Cleanliness is next to healthiness Your teeth are vital organs of the body too! Have you been putting that way overdue dental cleaning on the back burner? Think again; that back burner may very well be what burns your immune system. Did you know that many people living in the U.S. have some form of gum disease and don’t even realize it? Do you have bad breath or bleeding gum tissues when you brush or floss? Take a closer look at what your body is really trying to tell you and take your mouth seriously. Without regular professional cleanings twice a year and a dental examination and dental x-rays at least once yearly, this silent disease may breed more disease. Our mouth is full of bacteria, mucus and food partials that form a sticky film we call plaque. This plaque film settles on the teeth especially at the gum line. Home care with just brushing and flossing only removes some of the film. The remainder can calcify or harden onto the teeth and must be removed by professionals. Without removal, this film can cause gingivitis or an even more severe condition called periodontal disease. What people don’t realize is that this is
actual infection in your mouth that you are swallowing as well as infection draining through your gum line into your blood stream and into your body. Not only can this condition cause bad breath that won’t go away, red, swollen bleeding and/or tender gums, but can also cause painful chewing and loose teeth because of actual bone loss. It can cause sensitive teeth to hot, cold and touch as well as receding gum tissues and pockets that actually harbor more of these bacteria that worsens the symptoms and the condition. Studies have also show it contributes to high blood pressure, heart disease, fatigue, unexplained body pain, diabetes, pneumonia and even preterm labor for women. Combine any other risk factors such as smoking, certain medications and any genetic susceptibility and you just may have a calamity of overall health concerns. If this sounds like your mouth, your body or your health; do not wait any longer. Visit your local dentist today for a full comprehensive work up. By Anne-Marie Forgays-Dancy Dest Dental Management
easiest task we would undertake. We were a bit awkward and uncertain, but we continued in this foreign attempt to feed our bodies raw vegetables and juices. It took s e v e r a l months before we both noticed some subtle but encouraging changes in our bodies. A n d r e a started to grow again and she didn’t complain anymore when the weather turned; her joints were healing. My bathroom trips became less frequent and I gained weight. What a wonderful sight that was! The fibromyalgia pain slowly went away, too. Within a year, we had both experienced amazing results. I still follow this same type of diet — lots of fresh vegetable juices, no meat or dairy and more raw food than cooked. I found websites on the Internet with great recipes, I scoured the bookstore for books
on how to prepare raw foods and vegetarian recipe books, and I experimented. Today, I have an arsenal of great tasting recipes that I love to make. I don’t even miss the foods I chose not to eat because I’ve replaced them with such incredible, tasty alternatives. It wasn’t the easiest challenge I ever went through. But it’s definitely been the most rewarding for my family and me. Here’s how I rebuilt my immune system and rid my body of IBS: I drank freshly extracted vegetable juices throughout each day. Since my digestive system was compromised, I began eating only cooked vegetables for several weeks. I slowly introduced a few raw vegetables that were blended well. I ate them with a spoon. I added probiotics and digestive enzymes daily, both with and between meals. I walked many miles. This wasn’t just for exercise. It was my way of managing stress. Many prayers were offered up during these walks. I celebrated every small gain. Healing my body took time – the human body is a very complex system. But I was patient and persistent, and I was rewarded with renewed health and a body that can now do what it was designed to do. By Ann Malkmus, Hallelujah Acres’ Chief of Education

Father and daughter... making smiles By Lib Stewart
Dr. Stephanie Hannon, the newest member of the Hannon Orthodontics team of father and daughter, specializes in braces and Invisalign for the entire family. “It’s all about self image, “ said Ms. Hannon, who is excited about joining her father, Dr. Steve Hannon, in continuing the family tradition in excellence since 1978. Hannon Orthodontics serves the communities of Gastonia, Belmont, Lake Wylie, Shelby and surrounding areas. They partner with Gaston County Schools and are involved with Smart Board Campaign and Gaston School of the Arts by sponsoring performances. Hannon has also been involved with Holy Angels Children’s Home in Belmont and in Girls on the Run to promote leadership in young women. “We feel extremely grateful to give back to the communities we serve,” she said. “We’re focused on patient care for all ages, and that image starts at an early age, “ say both orthodontists. As a woman ages, treatment for periodontal disease is often necessary and a need for facial muscle balance is important, as well as interrelated hygiene. Stephanie’s expertise is teeth straightening; she is a certified Invisalign provider. She is proud that Hannon Orthodontics has helped over 10,000 patients achieve lifelong smiles through traditional braces and Invisalign for teens and adults. She has volunteered in Peru, was the leader of S.C.O.P.E., a service organization at the Dugoni School of Dentistry, and won the prestigious service and academic Pierre Fauchard

Life Changing Transformation to Health and Weight Loss As a pharmacist for over 20 years, I have been asked countless health-related questions. Among women there seems to be two concerns that are voiced most often: How do I lose weight and keep it off and what can I do to increase my energy level? After years of seeing fad diets and weight loss systems fail, and out of a desire to help my customers feel better and enjoy life more, I began searching for natural ways to decrease weight and increase energy. My further education, research and studies have led me to conclude that the right water and quality supplements combined with some dietary modifications and exercise are the keys to both weight loss and improved energy levels that will last. Now I am able to make recommendations to women helping them to achieve their weight loss goals and improve their overall quality of life through free consultations. I would like to share with you one real-life story of how Tricia lost weight (10 dress sizes and 85 pounds), found renewed energy, and improved overall health. If you are searching for the missing pieces to your health puzzle and feel you have hit a plateau and can’t seem to push beyond it; if you are searching for answers but keep coming up empty, this is how Tricia felt over three years ago. You may learn how you can regain your health and vitality! Here is Tricia’s story: For over three years, I found myself very sick. My symptoms consisted of short term memory problems, lethargy, couldn’t sleep, overweight, joint pain, irregular bowel movements and shortness of breath just to name a few!
I knew something wasn’t right but yet it was hard for me to pinpoint why I felt so awful. A month later I was finally diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. That diagnosis left me very depressed but yet I knew I did not want to go through the medical arena to help correct my issue. A friend of mine who happened to be a doctor suggested I try going the homeopathic route. So following his suggestion which I valued highly, my new direction consisted of forty-five pills and 80 liquid drops under my tongue daily. This regimen was not only exhausting to keep up with but also made my mouth feel like I was constantly consuming Oragel. I began to not feel like myself anymore and became dependent on all those pills some of which were synthetic vitamins and homeopathic prescribed drugs. I was hopelessly looking for answers and a cure! A year later after my diagnosis, I was introduced to Kangen water. While drinking Kangen water, I could immediately tell a difference just in the first gallon alone. My results were immediate and I began to lose weight and have a brighter outlook. Still though, I knew something was missing. At that point, I had lost several pounds but had not regained my full energy and vitality back. Then I was introduced to the highest quality natural, pharmaceutical grade, 100% whole food, NSF certified supplements at a free consultation. After doing my research, I knew this quality of supplement was the missing link needed to complete my health quest when combined with the Kangen water. My mother taught me well so I knew what to search for: Natural, 100% Whole Food Nutrition and I had always been 100% committed to finding the best. Here it was and I was so excited

to start right away on the products. I couldn’t believe what happened to me within a few weeks! Suddenly my plateau was broken and I lost several pounds just within a short period of time. I could feel and see my transformation happening before my eyes. Today I am so thrilled to share that I have lost a total of 85 pounds and several months ago went back to my doctor and much to his dismay my thyroid was absolutely perfect. People ask me all the time, what did you take and how did you take it? Well, I first started with a one of a kind consultation that led me to the Kangen water and then the best quality supplements available that included digestive enzymes. After that consultation, I realized that undigested See TRANSFORMATION, page 18

“Use it or lose it Exercise for Women Over 60 “Use it or lose it should be the motto when it comes to slowing down the aging process. We lose one percent of muscle mass per year after the age of forty. By age eighty, if nothing is done about this, a person will lose approximately half of their muscle mass, making them more susceptible to injury and illness. Women over age 60 can look and feel years younger by performing exercises that burn fat, reduce coronary risk factors, increase stamina and flexibility, maintain bone and muscle strength, and improve balance. Aerobic activity is imperative for weight loss and improving cardiovascular health. Unfortunately, the tendency to gain weight and the inability to lose weight increases after age 60. In fact, most women tend to gain 10 lbs. per decade after age 40. Aerobic activity ramps up your heart rate, burns fat, increases metabolism, and promotes cardiovascular health. Start with 15 - 30 minutes daily of any cardio exercise such as brisk walking, tennis, swimming, biking and dancing, but get physician approval first. Developing muscle strength and flexibility is also very important. As mentioned above, we can lose muscle mass at an alarming rate as we age. As your muscles shrink and lose mass, they lose tone and strength as well as become stiff, sore, and less flexible. Strength training can help maintain muscle mass, regain lost muscle, improve your metabolism, and ward off obesity. The focus should be on strengthening the major muscles in the arms, legs, abdomen and back. Loss of flexibility
can impede many of your daily activities including walking, housework and even breathing. Performing stretching or flexibility exercises will help you feel less stiff and improve your ability to move. Yoga is fun and effective way to work on flexibility. Consult with a physical therapist or personal trainer if you need help getting started. If you are a female who has been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, remember that weight bearing exercises and general muscle strengthening exercises are what you need to focus on. These activities have been proven to increase the strength of the bones, therefore making them less susceptible to fractures. Improving balance can help with the prevention of falls. One should practice balancing on one foot while holding on to a sturdy surface with one hand. When you are comfortable with that, try balancing on one foot without holding on to anything. Work toward maintaining your balance for 10-20 seconds on each foot. It’s never too late to get started on an exercise routine. The benefits you will gain will take you gracefully into your later years with better strength and vitality. Good Luck! By: Mary Ann Rogers, PT Cleveland Physical Therapy Associates

"Silent disease" doesn't get Hefner down by MICHAEL E. POWELL Sherry Hefner is not a woman to let a chronic illness get her down. In her daily dealings with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Hefner knows that staying on top of the flare-ups and symptoms is hard work, but is the way to manage this often debilitating disease. Hefner said she has gone on almost every web site devoted to the disease to learn all she can about its manifestations, and new therapies associated with its treatment. According to Hefner (and the web site, www.ra.com), the best (and most simple) definition of RA is a "chronic disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of function in the joints." Furthermore, the disease occurs when your immune system (the system that protects your body from outside harm), mistakenly starts attacking and inflaming your healthy tissue. This inflammation leads to swelling in the joints, which become less and less mobile. And if not managed properly, "over time, RA can cause joint damage—and can even result in permanent joint destruction. And keep you from doing the things you love." There, for Hefner, lies the rub, as the old saying goes. "It's not so much about what the disease is doing to me. I know what that is. It's more, on a day-to-day basis, about what it is keeping me FROM doing!" she said. Other fun activities Hefner said the disease takes away from her include gardening, cooking, and cross-stitching. "All of these have become more difficult but I continue to attempt them," she said, adding, "Something as simple as opening a bottle of water can be impossible. Babysitting my grandchildren is a big challenge for
me these days and I'm often scared to take on the task by myself." Hefner said the disease's flare-ups and unpredictability can make vacations and special events hard to enjoy especially when plans cannot be changed. Who's at risk for RA? Hefner's original symptoms were pain in her joints, swelling in her hands and feet, and severe fatigue. Those got her attention and she had to see what was making her feel this way. "RA occurs in people between the ages of 30 and 50," she said. "It can occur at just about any age and affects many people. A high percentage of those are women." Know the symptoms and the medications Hefner said her symptoms mimicked other ailments such as fibromyalgia and lupus. "The pain of RA is similar to other autoimmune disorders," she said. "As a matter of fact, it's often difficult for specialists to determine whether a new patient has RA, lupus, or fibromyalgia, since the symptoms are often the same." For Hefner, it was a matter of having blood work and other tests done by her family physician, and later a rheumatologist, to narrow down her specific type of illness. Hefner said her symptoms first included mild problems such as swelling, when in college. Over the years, she dismissed her pain as being related to a busy life with four young children. "Later, the symptoms became more moderate and they began to interrupt my life. By the time I saw the doctor I was 37 years old, and my initial diagnosis was lupus. "Once I read up on the disease, I became concerned about my prognosis."
Sherry Hefner, who battles rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on a daily basis, said RA flare-ups can sometimes keep her from doing even the most mundane household tasks such as cutting up a lemon for some good ole southern sweet tea, or generally working in the kitchen. (photo by MEP/The Eagle)

Is breast augmentation right for you? Everyone likes to look and feel their best. For some people, that means changing or enhancing certain features of their body. Out of the 1.6 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed last year, guess which procedure is the most popular? Breast augmentation. More than 300,000 women chose to have their breasts enhanced, also called mammaplasty, where implants are used to increase the size and enhance the shape of breasts. “Breast augmentation is a procedure women may consider because they aren’t happy with how small their breasts are; they have breasts that are slightly different sizes or shapes; or they feel their breasts aren’t in correct proportion to the rest of their body,” said Nelson Jenkins, MD, a plastic surgeon with Cleveland Plastic and Hand Surgery. Breast augmentation can be combined with other surgical procedures to work on the breast tissue, if necessary. “If the patient has severely drooping breasts, it may be possible to handle that with an implant, to basically fill up the excess skin,” said Dr. Jenkins. “Or, the surgeon may have to do something to tighten up the skin in addition to inserting implants to increase size.”
Most of the time, however, an augment is simply putting a silicone gel or saline implant underneath the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle. Once a woman decides to have breast augmentation, preparing for the surgery involves meeting with a plastic surgeon to discuss her goals and options. It also involves having a general medical evaluation. “Any woman considering a surgery of this type should be in good general health,” said Dr. Jenkins. “She should be a nonsmoker, or stop smoking prior to the surgery as smoking can affect wound healing. In addition, any medical conditions such as diabetes need to be well controlled.” Another consideration is weight loss. If a woman is losing weight, she should not have the surgery until she achieves her weight-loss goal and is at a weight she plans to maintain. When a woman decides to have breast augmentation surgery she has a choice in the type of implants used – saline (a saltwater solution) or silicone gel-filled. Regardless of the filling, the outer shell of the implants is made of a silicone material. Both saline-filled and silicone gel-filled implants have been approved by the United States

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe to use in breast augmentation surgery. Deciding what type and size of implant to use is an important consideration. A common mistake women make is using the breast implant size of someone else as a basis for their decision. The same size implant can look completely different on different women. The result of breast augmentation surgery is affected by how much breast tissue a woman has, the size of the implant she chooses, and her body shape and type. “The silicone gel implants have a more natural feel; they feel more like a normal breast,” said Dr. Jenkins. “Saline implants are slightly firmer to the touch.” Among both the saline and silicone gel implant options are choices in size, projection and shape. A consultation with a plastic surgeon helps most women think through the options to match their personal goals with what works best for their body shape and type. “As with any cosmetic procedure I do,” said Dr. Jenkins, “I talk with patients about
their goals for cosmetic surgery. Then, we talk about what is realistically possible. I try to match as closely as possible their desired result with what can be achieved through cosmetic surgery.” During his discussion with patients, Dr. Jenkins also talks about scarring. “Any surgery is going to produce a scar. With breast augmentation surgery there are several options for incision sites to hide or camouflage scars, but what will work best for each patient depends on her body, the type of implant she chooses and other factors. Again, I try to match the patient’s desired result with what is possible given those factors.” A saline-filled implant is placed first, and then filled with the saline solution, so it requires only a small incision, about 2-3 centimeters in size. Because a silicone gel-filled implant is pre-filled, it requires a slightly larger incision, about 5 – 6 centimeters in size. The surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis. After surgery, there will be some swelling and soreness. “Generally, See AUGMENTATION, page 17

Not enough time in the day to exercise? ‘Let life be your workout’ By Kyra Turner Women of America today have so many responsibilities with work, taking care of the kids, making dinner, cleaning the house… what woman has time to get fit and healthy? But there are ways to get tone and fit by doing your regular chores or just using household items. Throw in a few lunges or pushups while cleaning the kitchen counter or making the bed. Walk up and down the stairs a few times to tone up your legs or carry a basket of laundry for an even better workout. Have to put groceries up in the cabinets? Why not let that can of beans double as a dumbbell for a few reps of biceps and triceps curls? The web site Squeeze It In offers this handy tip on how to tighten up your glutes while sorting your laundry: Start with your laundry basket on the floor. With feet shoulder-width apart and a straight back, squat putting all your weight on your heels without your knees going past your ankles as you bend down for a piece of laundry. Try to hold the squat for 30 seconds before coming back up. As you stand, squeeze your glutes tightly as you drop your item into the washing machine. Repeat the process until all of your clothes are in the washer or for 2 sets of 12. For keeping your calves in shape while emptying your dishwasher, Squeeze It In recommends you rise up onto your toes and hold for a count of three before coming down slowly onto your heels. Repeat the process until all the dishes are put away or for 2 sets of 12.
To really feel the burn in your thighs and glutes, Squeeze It In suggests a few ballerina moves while blow drying your hair: With your feet shoulder-width apart, turn your toes and knees outward as if you were doing a pile (squat). Keeping your back straight, squat straight down, squeezing your buttocks and inner thighs as you slowly raise. Remember to use your core (ab) muscles and hold the sink if you need to for balance. Repeat for 2 sets of 12. Two stay-at-home mothers gave tips on how they stay in shape and healthy with so much to do. Heather Bundon of Kings Mountain is at home with her three-year-old son, Caleb, and six-month-old daughter, Blakely. “Since I have two small children, most of the time my keeping in shape goes to the bottom of the pile of things to do,” she said. “Mostly its running around after my kids but I also cook good, healthy meals to keep the whole family healthy.” Erin Johnson of Kings Mountain is at home with her four children, Carley,10, Rachel, 8, Zach, 6, and Joseph, 4. “I run around with my youngest but mostly I do push-ups, wear ankle-weights and when my husband, Jeff, is home, he lets me take a run,” Johnson said. Johnson said she also tries to cook nutritious meals for the family. So even busy women can work out. It just takes a little effort at home. Need help providing your children with nutritious food? Young mothers or mothers-to-be, Gaston County Health Department wants to help you out! Spokesperson Shannon Clubb said the county health department wants these women to be aware they may be eligible for a Health Department program if they need help feeding their children nutritious food. “The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides its clients with vouchers they can use to purchase healthy food,” Clubb noted. Other helps for these new, or soon-to-be new, mothers includes nutrition education and counseling, breast-feeding promotion and support, and referrals to other health and community services the clients may need or want. Gaston County Health nutrition services coordinator Leigh Anne Carpenter said, “Pregnancy and the first few years of life are critical for every child.” If any child gets off to a healthy start, he or she has a much better chance at having a healthy, productive life. “In the last few years, we’ve seen too much childhood obesity. That is not good for children.” She noted that feeding a child isn’t the same as feeding an adult because they have different needs. “Our WIC nutritionists can help parents understand good nutrition for children so their kids get off on the right foot, living a healthy lifestyle.” Clubb noted that to be eligible a person must meet the following criteria: • Be pregnant or be a breast-feeding woman who has had a baby in the last 12 months; • Be a woman (breast-feeding or not) who has had a baby in the last six months; • Be younger than 5 years old; • Live in Gaston County; • Meet income requirements. Gross annual household income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty income. All Medicaid, food stamp (SNAP) and WorkFirst recipients meet the WIC income eligibility criteria; and • Have a nutritional risk as determined by a health professional. WIC services, according to Clubb, are available at the Gaston County Health Dept., 991 W. Hudson Blvd., and at Highland Health Center, 609 N. Highland St. For more information or to make an appointment to apply for WIC at either site, call (704) 853-5100.

Weight lifting: it’s not just for men Most women do not lift weights because they do not want to “bulk up.” However this is far from the truth. There are a lot of health benefits to strength training which include increase metabolism; decrease percent body fat, increase muscular strength, increase bone mass, increase self-confidence, and can help prevent injuries. Strength training can also help with activities of daily living with include picking up a box off of the ground, playing with the kids, mowing the lawn, or household projects. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has the following recommendations for weight lifting. They recommend that a healthy adult lifts weights at least two times a week on non-consecutive days, perform eight to twelve repetitions, targeting at least eight to ten major muscle groups, and completing at least one set of each exercise. Some exercises that can be done are squats, lunges, shoulder press, and a bicep curl. Here are descriptions for the following exercises so you can perform them. Squat- keep your feet shoulder width apart, toes facing forward, sit back by putting your body weight in your heels, and make sure your knees do not go over your toes. This can be completed with or without weights. Lunges- Have one leg forward and the other leg back so you are in a split position. Make sure both toes are facing forward and the back foot’s heel is off of the ground, now bend the back leg by having it in a ninety degree angle and come straight back up. Again make sure the front of the knee does not go past the toes. This can be completed with or without weights. Shoulder press- Bring your elbows at a ninety degree angle. Take your arms and press them towards the ceiling and have them come
together without the weights touching and bring them back to the starting position. Bicep Curl- Bring your palms facing forward and have your arms to the side of your body. Slowing lift your arms up by bending at the elbow and then bring them back to the starting position. Make sure you are not swinging your arms and keep those elbows tight inside of the body. Make sure when you are lifting weights that you do not hold your breath. Try and exhale on the exertion or the hardest part of the exercise and inhale on the easier part of the exercise. For example for the bicep curl you want to exhale when lifting the weights up and you want to inhale on the way down. Another thing to consider when you are lifting weights is that you do not want momentum to help you when you are lifting weights. It is important that you are not swinging your arms or performing the exercise too quickly. It should take you around three to five seconds to complete a repetition. Another thing to consider is how much weight should you be lifting? It is recommended that you choose a weight that is challenging and you can complete all of the repetitions without compromising your form. If you are a beginner or brand new to exercise try lifting three to five pounds and see if that weight is comfortable for you. If that weight is starting to feel easy or not as challenging for you progressively move the weight up one to two pounds. If you are brand new to working out you can train with a personal trainer or attend strength training group fitness classes to learn new exercises. The Cleveland County Family YMCA Association offers a variety of strength training classes that include Les Mills BODYPUMP, Muscle Madness, Power Abs, and others! Please call or stop by for more information, or visit our website at www.CleveCoYMCA.org.

Few topics in medicine have created more confusion for millions of women than the controversies surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT). With few exceptions, women age at a similar rate until they reach their late twenties or mid-thirties. Then most women reach a turning point – a transition from “growing” into “aging”. Most women over the age of 40 will experience the following symptoms: weight gain, hot flashes, weakness, thinning of the skin, poor memory, low sex drive, sleep issues, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. This loss of quality of life does not have to be a normal part of aging. We can now diagnose and replenish the declining hormones to help women in gaining back their energy, vitality, strength, physique and health. Hormones are proteins and derivatives of cholesterol that are manufactured in the endocrine glands, including the ovaries, pancreas, thyroid, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands. In the past, synthetic hormones were the only option to correct hormone deficiency in women. However, now it is possible to produce natural hormones that match those produced by the body. Natural, biologically identical hormones mimic the shape and function of our own endogenous hormones. Bio-identical hormones are manufactured from plants, such as soy and yams and do not cause the side effects of synthetic hormones, which can include bloating, mood swings, water retention and even cancer. Hormones control and influence virtually all the functions of the body including reproductive, immune and metabolic systems. Hormones can even extend to influence the woman’s mental health and physical well-
being. While aging can not be reversed, preventative steps can be taken to slow the decline of hormonal levels and to replenish all of the deficient hormones to a more youthful balance. The most common hormones include DHEA, pregnenolone, thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and melatonin. DHEA affects the immune system, sex drive, metabolism and emotional stability. Pregnenolone decline can cause failure of memory and lack of mental clarity. Thyroid is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that regulates temperature, metabolism and cerebral function. Low thyroid levels can cause loss of energy, loss of motivation, and thinning hair, skin and nails. Estrogen is essential for muscle tone, skin smoothness, and sex drive. Estrogen has also been shown to deter osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. The partner See HRT, page 18

CLINIC: is making a difference in women’s lives From page 2 ical experts.” Board-certified physicians who are a part of MBCC’s Breast Center Physician Panel are surgeons Dr. Mark Couture, Dr. Sandra Schultz, and Dr. Carlos Sicilia; medical oncologists Dr. Keith Ayrons, Dr. William Charles, Dr. Melissa Matulis, Dr. James McGrath, Dr. Lia Spina, and Dr. Steven Yates; radiation oncologists Dr. Robert Doline, Dr. Charles Meakin, and radiologist Dr. Annamarie Collier. “Our Breast Health Navigators are Donna Neil, RNC, and Donna Tyree, RN, MA. Brian Kirby, RN is the clinical trials coordinator,” Smith noted. The physicians go through each patient’s information using a case-by-case, sequential method. Smith said before the patient leaves her approximate two-hour visit, a follow-up appointment is made. That visit is calculated to utilize the preferences and recommendations of the patient and the referring physicians. Smith said patients can self-refer by calling (704) 834-3540. Upon leaving the initial visit, patients will receive a summary of that visit. The summary includes treatment options. Additionally, the patient’s referring physician receives detailed documentation of the multidisciplinary team’s findings and recommendations. While CaroMont has never really heavily promoted the clinic, it’s important, Smith said, to make everyone aware they are here offering “patient-centered care.” Rick Varterasian, Oncology Service Line Director for CaroMont Health, said CaroMont’s cancer program is a “big thing.”
In 2011 Smith said the MBCC received a National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer Centers award, their first ever. “It is a relatively new award and was a voluntary process on which we worked, under the direction of Dr. Charles Macon, our Medical Director for Radiation Oncology, for over a year.” Breast cancer figures on the rise
The figures today for breast cancer are on the rise Smith said, and the survival rates, although better, are based on immediacy of finding the disease and its treatment. “Most women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of it,” she said. According to the National Cancer Data Base, the five-year breast cancer survival by stage is as follows: Stage 0, 95.4 percent; Stage I, 91.8; Stage II, 84.8; Stage III, 65.5; and Stage IV, 20.8 percent. Varterasian said the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed in a year for Gaston County is approximately 200. “In Cleveland County there are approximately 90 per year diagnosed,”. Smith added that the figure is still roughly one in eight women affected by the disease. At the end of the day and in spite of the facts and figures, Smith said it’s all about quality patient care. “I have had some patients tell me they can’t imagine having cancer and not being able to have access to the clinic and its resources,” Smith said. “By having all the experts at one table we are able to develop quite a rapport with our patients. That makes all the difference in many cases.”

AUGMENTATION: is it right for you? From page 12 most women are pretty comfortable after two to three weeks and begin getting back to their normal activities,” said Dr. Jenkins. Both types of implants have a lifespan of 10 – 15 years. Over time, it is possible that an implant could rupture or develop a leak. “When a saline implant ruptures, it’s like popping a water balloon. One day you have a breast and the next day you don’t,” said Jenkins. “It’s pretty obvious when that happens, but with silicone implants it’s very difficult to tell when one ruptures or leaks. A woman with silicone implants needs to have an MRI about once every three years to monitor the implants and check for leaks or ruptures.” As with any medical procedure, there are risks and possible complications involved in having breast augmentation surgery. Possible risks, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, include unfavorable scarring, bleeding, infection, poor healing of incisions, formation of firm scar tissue around the implant, and the possibility of needing revisional surgery. Anyone considering cosmetic surgery needs to be realistic about what that surgery can do for them. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says that a good surgical candidate has: realistic expectations of the surgery itself; realistic expectations of the effect surgery will have on quality of life/lifestyle/relationships; a good self-image, but a concern about a bothersome feature or a moderately diminished self-image due to the cosmetic defect; an understanding of the risks; and realistic expectations of the duration of improvement (if improvement will not be permanent). TRANSFORMATION: to health and weight loss From page 7 foods were more acidic in my body than if I had drank soda on a day to day basis! Just by implementing this quality of supplements with digestive enzymes I lost weight but still wanted more. Then at my next consultation, I realized there are specific natural enzymes that are the most beneficial to burning fat when taken on an empty stomach. So not only did I take it on an empty stomach but also incorporated one capsule right before my workout as well. I started on 3 capsules daily all on an empty stomach: one in the morning, midday and night. Taking these specific fatburning natural enzymes along with the Kangen water and other supplements with digestive enzymes (at meals) has allowed me to lose from 1% to 2% body fat per month on an average basis. Plus I have the energy to work out more. I can’t say enough about Kangen water and the perfect combination of the right supplements and enzymes. It has taken my health to a whole new level! It has become my
true passion and mission to share Health and Hydration by assisting others to find those missing pieces of the puzzle to True Health. Now 85lbs lighter, I feel amazing and am still working on becoming the best that I know I can be. Tricia Gonzales Natural Enzymes in the proper combinations enable you to digest unwanted fat! In conclusion fat cannot be burned until it is first digested! If this is the first time you have ever heard that statement let me help you understand why. Our bodies do not recognize fat just like they do not recognize proteins or carbohydrates until they have been broken down into their usable forms of amino acids, simple sugars and fatty acids. How does the body break down these essential building blocks? Well, I’ll give you a hint- it’s enzymes!! When the body is lacking in the fat digesting enzyme then it will naturally store the undigested fat in multiple different areas from your blood stream to your belly
causing the infamous “Spare Tire Syndrome”. Yikes, no one wants that! So if you are slaving away at the gym to achieve that lean, sleek physique but are coming up short then let us help you break through your plateau! We are all enticed by the latest and greatest workout machine promising to reach our weight loss goals and don’t get me wrong, exercising is the key to building strong muscles but if those wellbuilt abs are blanketed by fat (undigested fat) then those countless hours of crunches will not reveal the glistening six pack abs you desire. You must digest that stored fat first then the body can use those fatty acids as fuel and you will begin to see and measure the difference. Key point: Exercise boosts your metabolism during your workout and for a short period afterwards but enzymes transform your metabolism on a daily basis! Tricia experienced that transformation when she dropped TEN dress sizes!! By Billy Wease, RPh
HRT: improving women’s health, quality of life From page 16 to estrogen is progesterone which helps to stimulate bone grown, healthy heart function and boost mood and well-being. Testosterone therapy has been shown to be beneficial with women in improving bone density, bone formation, increased energy, increased sex drive, increased muscle strength, and lowering of body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Melatonin regulates the sleep rhythms within the body and possibly slows the aging process. The cost of hormone replacement therapy depends on your individual needs. Depending on your location, the costs of your first visit with a physician can range from $400 to $600; blood tests can range from $750 to $950, and follow up visits from $350 to $450. However, hormone therapy costs can be tailored to meet not only your physical needs but your financial needs as well. After two years, she said her diagnosis was changed to RA with lupus-related overlap. "At that point, I was very sick and suffering from severe anemia. I was immediately connected with a wonderful rheumatologist, who took a proactive approach to the disease." Hefner knows RA has no cure. She also knows its a chronic, life-long, and often debilitating illness. But she also knows that with proper ongoing treatment, patients can expect to enjoy life with low-impact to moderate activity between flare-ups. As for the flare-ups, she said they can come on quickly, coming on many times overnight. They are marked by increased pain, low-grade fever, fatigue, and sometimes rashes. "The duration between flare-ups can be a little as weeks and as much as months or even years, in some cases," she said. "This depends on your medications effectiveness and other factors, such as stress." Hefner noted when her flare-up are more pronounced she has to resort to a steroidal drug such as prednisone, which reduces the pain but can also harm bone material. "Ten years ago, when I was first diagnosed, RA treatment was undergoing radical changes," Hefner said. "DMARDs (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) were new and beginning to improve the quality of life for many of us (RA sufferers)." Hefner learned the DMARDs work by suppressing the immune system, which, in RA, attacks the patient's joints. "Unfortunately, while these drugs work quite well to prevent joint damage, it also makes me more susceptible to illnesses like the cold and flu!" Other medications she takes, in addition to the Prednisone, are methotrexate (which is commonly called "the chemo pill"), Enbrel injections, and Rhemicaid infusions. "Throughout the years, whenever other drugs have failed, I have taken prednisone, which works amazingly well for many RA sufferers. Unfortunately, it's not suitable for longterm use." Prednisone, Hefner said, works to destroy the bones, which is especially damaging when the patient has a joint or connective-tissue disorder. Side effects of the medications she takes range from hair loss, night sweats, weight gain/loss, mouth sores, and most frequently, the susceptibility to sickness. Dealing with RA on a daily basis To someone who is dealing with RA, Hefner counsels, "Don't give up! It can take months to find the right specialist and the right treatment." Her faith in Christ has been the single biggest encouragement to her life with RA. She knows that God is in control and she is not. "He has shown me, through this illness, that I need to rely solely on Him, day by day," Hefner said. Sherry's husband, the Reverend Dr. Vince Hefner, pastor of Cherryville's First Baptist Church, has been a great support for her, as has her entire family, she said. "He has taken me to all of my rheumatology appointments and my infusion treatments,
which can take up to three hours to receive!" She added he keeps track of all her medications and gives them to her at the appropriate times. "He often helps with challenging tasks around the house, especially when I am symptomatic," she noted. "Fatigue is one of my biggest, ongoing challenges. By the end of the day, I can be wiped out. My husband doesn't mind if I am not up to cooking while I am experiencing a flare-up. On those occasions, we have something simple or we pick up some prepared food. He has even been known to cook a delicious breakfast for dinner as a surprise for me when I am not feeling well." Other family members having RA or a similar disease include her grandmother and greataunt, and her father, who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years ago. She also has a couple friends who suffer from RA who offer her "wonderful support" and are "encouraging listeners." "At one time, we all shared the same rheumatologist," she said. "It is very natural for us to start out every conversation with, 'How are you? Really, how are you?'" Since RA is a silent illness the two friends are positive, upbeat ladies who are always ready to drop everything and listen. "That means a lot," Hefner said. She is currently between treatment plans, because one medication may work for months or years and then suddenly, without warning, stop working. Other medications may be tried but don't help at all, she said. "It is truly trial and error and it's easy to become discouraged. Finding the correct medication is the secret to living with RA." Also, she added, finding a rheumatologist with whom you can easily relate is equally important. "Finding a rheumatologist is harder than ever. The field has not kept up the pace in producing enough caregivers for those suffering with auto-immune diseases. I have been going to Charlotte for my past visits but my primary care physician has recommended that I consider traveling to Winston-Salem or Durham for future appointments," Hefner noted. Hope for a cure? Outlook for today? Hefner said rheumatology is a rapidly developing field with new clues being studied every day for what causes the disease and how it might be prevented in the future. "Currently, more scientists are looking at Vitamin D deficiency as being one important factor in the development of RA and other auto-immune disorders," she said. "Vitamin D has been shown to keep inflammation in check, and inflammation is a big key in lots of today's illnesses, including heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and even diabetes. I suffer from chronic Vitamin D deficiency as well as anemia. My doctor feels there is some link between these problems and my RA." Hefner believes her outlook as an RA sufferer is positive. Especially now that new medications are currently being developed and the understanding of the illness is increasing. "I feel so blessed that God has given me this life," she said. "Sometimes, through suffering, we are able to enjoy the simple gifts of God more fully."
